Abstract:In the last few decades, the Loess Plateau had experienced an extensive vegetation restoration to reduce soil erosion and to improve the degraded ecosystems. However, the dynamics of ecosystem carbon stocks with vegetation restoration in this region are poorly understood. This study examined the changes of carbon stocks in mineral soil (0–100 cm), plant biomass and the ecosystem (plant and soil) following vegetation restoration with different models and ages. Our results indicated that cultivated land returned to native vegetation (natural restoration) or artificial forest increased ecosystem carbon sequestration. Tree plantation sequestered more carbon than natural vegetation succession over decades scale due to the rapid increase in biomass carbon pool. Restoration ages had different effects on the dynamics of biomass and soil carbon stocks. Biomass carbon stocks increased with vegetation restoration age, while the dynamics of soil carbon stocks were affected by sampling depth. Ecosystem carbon stocks consistently increased after tree plantation regardless of the soil depth; but an initial decrease and then increase trend was observed in natural restoration chronosequences with the soil sampling depth of 0–100 cm. Moreover, there was a time lag of about 15–30 years between biomass production and soil carbon sequestration in 0–100 cm, which indicated a long-term effect of vegetation restoration on deeper soil carbon sequestration.

Abstract:Extensive soil organic carbon (SOC) accumulation has been reported following ecological restoration on the Loess Plateau of northwest China. While previous studies have found the restoration age to be a major factor controlling SOC change, potential effects of vegetation type and plant species have been largely neglected. Here, we compiled a database of 331 measurements of SOC changes following cropland restoration across the entire Loess Plateau. Results from stepwise multiple linear regressions indicated dominant contributions by restoration age, vegetation type or plant species, and/or their interactions in post-restoration SOC accumulation, accounting for 67-86% of the variation in SOC sequestration being explained by the model. Of the four restoration types examined, managed grassland was found to have the highest SOC sequestration rate (0.41 Mg C hm(-2) yr(-1)), followed by plantation (0.27 Mg C hm(-2) yr(-1)) and shrubland (0.25 Mg C hm(-2) yr(-1)), with the lowest value found for naturally recovered grassland (0.13 Mg C hm(-2) yr(-1)). The different SOC sequestration capacities for these vegetation types were further confirmed by an independent mechanistic modeling approach based on SOC turnover rate. Our results highlight the critical role of plant type in determining SOC sequestration following revegetation over cropland. Such management-relevant information should be considered in future restoration efforts.

Abstract:Vegetation restoration is one of the most effective ways to increase soil organic carbon (SOC). After the implementation of vegetation restoration policies such as the "Grain for Green" project, which has increased regional vegetation coverage. However, the impact of land use, vegetation types, restoration time, and topographic and meteorological factors on SOC remains unclear. Therefore, this study examined the effect of vegetation restoration on SOC in the Loess Plateau through a meta‐analysis of 520 sample data collected from 60 research papers. The results showed that vegetation restoration in the Loess Plateau significantly increased SOC by 29.40%. Restoration time was the most important factor affecting the SOC after revegetation. Land use type was an important factor that influenced SOC; the most significant impact on SOC was found when the previous land use type was abandoned land and the current land use type was woodland. Different vegetation types resulted in different SOC as follows: Fagaceae > Salicaceae > Pinaceae > Leguminosae. Broad‐leaved forests had significantly higher SOC than that of coniferous forests. Non‐nitrogen‐fixing plants increased SOC significantly compared to nitrogen‐fixing plants. Soil organic carbon decreased in 0‐5 years after vegetation restoration, and then increased with the increase of restoration years. Especially, the soil carbon sequestration effect of vegetation has been significantly improved after 10 years of restoration. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Sloping Farmlands Conversion to Mixed Forest Improves Soil Carbon Pool on the Loess Plateau

Abstract:Vegetation restoration is considered a potentially useful strategy for controlling soil erosion and improving soil organic carbon (SOC) in arid and semiarid ecosystems. However, there is still debate regarding which vegetation restoration type is the best choice. In this study, four vegetation restoration types (i.e., grasslands, shrubs, forests and mixed forests) converted from sloping farmlands were selected to explore the SOC variation among the four types and to investigate which soil factors had the greatest effect on SOC. The results showed while the magnitude of effect differed between vegetation restoration type, all studied systems significantly increased SOC and labile organic carbon contents (p < 0.01), soil nutrients such as total nitrogen (TN) (p < 0.01), available nitrogen (AN) (p < 0.01), total phosphorus (TP) (p < 0.05) and available phosphorus (AP) (p < 0.05), soil enzyme activities such as phosphatase (p < 0.01), soil microbial biomass carbon (MBC) (p < 0.05), and basal respiration (BR) (p < 0.05), but had significant negative correlationswith polyphenol oxidase (p < 0.05). However, the effects of vegetation restoration of farmland converted to natural grasslands, shrubs, forests and mixed forests varied. Among the types studied, the mixed forests had the largest overall positive effects on SOC overall, followed by the natural grasslands. Soil nutrients such as N and P and soil microbial activities were the main factors that affected SOC after vegetation restoration. Mixed forests such as Robinia pseudoacacia and Caragana korshinskii are the best choice for farmland conversion on the central of the Loess Plateau.

Abstract:Ceramide is an important lipid second messenger produced by sphingolipid metabolism in cells exposed to a limited number of agonists and in turn triggers several cell responses in a protein kinase C (PKC)-dependent manner. Stimulation of mesangial cells with a radioiodinated photoaffinity labeling analogue of ceramide, (N-[3-[[[2-(125I)iodo-4-[3-(trifluoromethyl)-3H-diazirin-3-yl]benz yl] oxy]carbonyl]propanoyl]-D-erythro-sphingosine) ([125I]-TID-ceramide), defines PKC-alpha and PKC-delta as direct targets of ceramide. No binding of ceramide to PKC-epsilon and PKC-zeta could be detected. Moreover, TID-ceramide selectively binds to recombinant PKC-alpha and -delta but not to PKC-epsilon and -zeta isoenzymes. In vitro kinase activity assays reveal that only the binding of ceramide to PKC-alpha is accompanied by an increase in kinase activity. In contrast, there is no change in in vitro kinase activity of the other isoforms tested, i.e., PKC-delta, -epsilon, and -zeta, toward any of the conventional substrates tested. However, it is noteworthy that PKC-delta shows a decreased autophosphorylation upon ceramide binding. In vivo, activation of PKC-alpha by ceramide is monitored by a delayed translocation of the isoform from the cytosol to the membrane fraction, detectable after 1 h of stimulation. In contrast, neither PKC-delta, nor -epsilon nor -zeta is redistributed by ceramide. One functional cell response mediated by PKC-alpha in mesangial cells is a negative feedback regulation of ligand-stimulated phosphoinositide hydrolysis. When cells are pretreated with ceramide, ATP-induced inositol trisphosphate formation is time-dependently reduced. A maximal inhibition is observed after 2 h of ceramide exposure. In summary, these results suggest that ceramide selectively interacts with the alpha- and delta-isoforms of PKC in mesangial cells. Whereas PKC-alpha is activated with pronounced inhibition of hormone-stimulated phosphoinositide signaling, PKC-delta displays a decrease in its autophosphorylation, suggesting a negative role of ceramide binding on PKC-delta activity.
Soil C, N, P and K stoichiometry affected by vegetation restoration patterns in the alpine region of the Loess Plateau, Northwest China

Abstract:The Grain-for-Green project is an important ecological restoration measure to address the degradation of alpine ecosystems in China, which has an important impact on the ecological stoichiometry of soil carbon (C), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K). However, soil stoichiometry changes under different vegetation restoration patterns and at different soil depths remain poorly understood in the alpine region of the Loess Plateau. To clarify these soil stoichiometry changes, a 0–60 cm soil profile was sampled from two typical vegetation restoration patterns: grassland (GL) and forestland (FL), including Picea crassifolia (PC), Larix principis-rupprechtii (LR), Populus cathayana (PR) and Betula platyphylla (BP). The control was a wheat field (WF). In all soil layers, the soil organic carbon (SOC), total nitrogen (TN), soil available nitrogen and potassium (AN and AK, respectively) and C:P, C:K, N:P and N:K ratios of FL were higher than those of GL and WF. The TN content and N:P and N:K ratios of GL were higher than those of WF in each soil layer. Additionally, the soil nutrients (except TK) of all vegetation types and stoichiometry of PR and GL (except the N:P ratio of GL) were greater at 0–20 cm than at 20–60 cm. Moreover, the SOC and TN showed the strongest correlation with the soil stoichiometry (except P:K ratio); thus, C and N had the greatest effect on the soil stoichiometry. Furthermore, soil fertility was limited by N. Our results indicated that different vegetation restoration patterns and soil depths had significant effects on the soil nutrients and stoichiometry in the alpine region of the Loess Plateau. The recovery of farmland to forestland promoted better improvements of soil nutrients, and PR had the most significant positive effect on soil surface nutrients.

Abstract:Natural vegetation restoration and tree plantation are the two most important measures for ecosystem restoration on the Loess Plateau of China. However, few studies have compared the effects of the two contrasting measures on soil organic and inorganic carbon (SOC and SIC) sequestration or have further used SOC and SIC isotopes to analyze the inherent sequestration mechanism. This study examined a pair of neighboring small watersheds with similar topographical and geological backgrounds. Since 1954, natural vegetation restoration has been conducted in one of these watersheds, and tree plantation has been conducted in the other. The two watersheds have now formed completely different landscapes (naturally restored grassland and artificial forestland). Differences in soil bulk density, SOC and SIC content and storage, and SOC and SIC δ(13)C values were investigated in the two ecosystems in the upper 1m of the soil. We found that SOC storage was higher in the grassland than in the forestland, with a difference of 14.90 Mg ha(-1). The vertical changes in the δ(13)CSOC value demonstrated that the two ecosystems have different mechanisms of soil surface organic carbon accumulation. The SIC storage in the grassland was lower than that in the forestland, with a difference of 38.99 Mg ha(-1). The δ(13)CSIC values indicated that the grassland generates more secondary carbonate than the forestland and that SIC was most likely transported to the rivers from the grassland as dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC). The biogeochemical characteristics of the grassland were favorable for the formation of bicarbonate. Thus, more DIC derived from the dissolution of root and microbial respired CO2 into soil water could have been transported to the rivers through flood runoff. It is necessary to study further the transportation of DIC from the grassland because this process can produce a large potential carbon sink.
Long-term effects of vegetation restoration and forest management on carbon pools and nutrient storages in northeastern Loess Plateau, China

Abstract:It is crucial for understanding the variations of carbon and nutrient pools within the ecosystems during long-term vegetation restoration to accurately assess the effects of different ecological restoration patterns. However, the long-term spatio-temporal variations of carbon and nutrient pools under different vegetation types remain unclear. The sites for long-term natural and planted forests (i.e., Natural secondary forest, Pinus tabulaeformis planted forest, Platycladus orientalis planted forest, and Robinia pseudoacacia planted forest) on the northeastern Loess Plateau, China were selected, to measure and analyze the differences and interannual variations of vegetation attributes at four synusiae and soil properties at 0-100 cm over the period of 12 years (2006-2017). The principal component analysis (PCA) and Mantel test were also conducted to explore the relationships among vegetation attributes, soil properties, and carbon and nutrient pools. The results showed that: compared with the planted forests, the natural secondary forest had lower arborous biomass (84.21 ± 1.53 t hm-2) and higher understory biomass and plant heights. Compared to planted forests, the secondary forest had higher soil carbon and nitrogen contents (13.74 ± 3.50 g kg-1 and 1.16 ± 0.34 g kg-1). The soil carbon pool in the secondary forest was 22.0% higher than planted forests, while the vegetation carbon pool in the P. tabulaeformis was 75.5% higher than other forests. Principal component analysis (PCA) and Mantel test revealed that vegetation attributes and soil properties had significant correlations with carbon and nutrient pools, especially at the arborous synusia (p < 0.01). The findings indicated that in the ecologically fragile Loess Plateau region, the selection of appropriate vegetation restoration types should be guided by varying ecological restoration goals and benefits, aiming to expected ecological outcomes. This insight offers a strategic implication for forest management that is tailored to improve carbon and nutrient pools in areas with similar environmental conditions.

Abstract:Natural vegetation restoration has been reported as an effective strategy for the enhancement of soil organic carbon (SOC) and nitrogen (SON) sequestration in degraded ecosystems. However, changes in SOC and SON pool sizes, dynamics, and biochemical stability to natural vegetation restoration remain inadequately addressed. For this study, we investigated carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) contents and delta C-13 and delta N-15 values of SOC and SON pools, their labile C and N (LSOC and LSON, respectively), and recalcitrant C and N (RSOC and RSON, respectively) along 0-60 cm soil depths spanning ~160 years of natural vegetation restoration on the Loess Plateau, China. Our results revealed that natural vegetation restoration greatly enhanced SOC, SON, LSOC, LSON, RSOC, total N, water-soluble organic C, and mineralizable organic C in the topsoil (0-20 cm), while it had little influence on the deeper soil layers (20-60 cm). The concentrations and stocks of SOC and SON in the topsoil increased significantly during the later restoration stages. The recalcitrant index for C at the 0-40 cm soil depths was highest in climax Quercus liaotungensis forest, while the recalcitrant index for N was unchanged at 0-20 and 40-60 cm soil depths between vegetation restoration stages. The delta C-13 values of SOC, LSOC, and RSOC, and delta 15N values of SON and LSON were more enriched in the deeper soil layers relative to the topsoil, for the majority of restoration stages. The delta 15N values of SON, LSON, and RSON in the topsoil were more enriched during the early restoration stages compared to the later restoration stages. Our results suggested that long-term natural vegetation resto-ration enhanced SOC and SON sequestration, increased biochemical stability of SOC, altered the dynamics of SOC and SON in the topsoil of degraded ecosystems through the increased inputs of plant residuals, and reduced the decomposition soil organic matter.
Factor contribution to soil carbon and nitrogen accumulation after vegetation restoration on the Loess Plateau, China

Abstract:Unraveling the distributions and controls of soil carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) accumulation is conducive to providing guidance for sustainable ecosystem management. Although the factors that affect soil C and N accumulation have been widely investigated, the relative importance of these factors and whether they confer direct or indirect effects remain unclear. Herein, we examined the distributions of soil organic carbon (SOC), soil inorganic carbon (SIC), and total nitrogen (TN) stocks across the 0–200 cm soil profiles in grasslands, forestlands, and shrublands on the Loess Plateau. Moreover, we determined the relative contributions of land use, topography, and soil properties (texture, water, phosphorus, and available nitrogen) to their variations. The results showed that with increasing soil depth, SOC and TN stocks decreased, while SIC stocks fluctuated. However, large amounts of SOC, SIC, and TN were stored in the deep soil layers (100–200 cm), with values of 3.06, 26.63, and 0.50 kg/m2, respectively. In the 0–200 cm soil layers, the total SIC stock was 53.40 kg/m2 and was 6.8 times higher than the total SOC stock. Among different plant communities, grasslands had the highest SIC stock (54.83 kg/m2), while Armeniaca sibirica and Robinia pseudoacacia had the highest SOC stock (10.06 kg/m2) and TN stock (1.49 kg/m2), respectively. Furthermore, approximately 85% of the variations in SOC, SIC, and TN stocks were jointly affected by land use, topography, and soil properties, in which soil properties acted as the most important driving factors, followed by topography and land use. In particular, topography affected SOC, SIC, and TN stocks mainly through its effects on soil texture and water. Overall, vegetation restoration scenarios incorporating grasslands and Robinia pseudoacacia are highly recommended and should be tailored according to specific topographic features.

Abstract:Large-scale vegetation restoration has been performed to improve the fragile ecological environment of the Loess Plateau in the last decades. At present, the effects and mechanism of long-term vegetation restoration on soil properties in ecosystems require further exploration to provide a reference for rational ecological construction. Hence, we investigated the differences in vegetation attributes and soil properties between three typical vegetation types ( Pinus tabulaeformis plantation forest, PTPF; Robinia pseudoacacia plantation forest, RPPF; natural secondary forest, NSF) after long-term (30–40 years) vegetation restoration in the western Loess Region, China. Our results showed that (1) the arborous synusia biomass of the plantation forests was twice that of NSF, whereas NSF had almost 50% higher near-surface synusia biomass than the plantation forests; (2) the soil nutrient contents of the plantation forests were lower (30%) than those of NSF; (3) the soil bulk density, organic matter, total nitrogen, and phosphorus were positively related to arborous and shrub synusia biomass; (4) the coupling effects of four biological synusiae (with the contribution of 47.67%) were the dominant factors affecting soil physicochemical properties. Natural forests have the better vegetation attributes and soil properties than plantation forests, indicating that the close-to-nature restoration should be considered in ecological restoration. These findings can provide scientific support and theoretical basis for reforestation and ecological restoration in the Loess Plateau region and similar areas in the future.

Abstract:Vegetation restoration on the Loess Plateau has decreased soil erosion. However, the comprehensive effects of different vegetation restoration types on soil properties are not clear. Evaluating the soil properties of the main economic and ecological tree species on the Loess Plateau can provide crucial guidance for regional ecological environment restoration. Therefore, we compared soil water content (SWC), soil particle composition, root distribution, soil organic carbon (SOC) content, soil bulk density (BD), total porosity (TP), saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks), soil water retention curves (SWRCs), and soil aggregate stability of peach (Prunus persica), walnut (Juglans regia L.), and apple (Malus pumila) orchards, black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia), and grassland of similar age on the semi-arid Loess Plateau. Forestland, especially black locust, had significantly lower SWC than grassland. The different vegetation restoration types altered the soil texture; grassland had the highest clay content, while black locust had the lowest. Afforestation promoted deep root formation, reaching>10 m, with>50 % of the roots below 2 m. Compared with grassland, forestland did not increase SOC content in the soil profile. Soil BD increased with increasing soil depth from 0 to 80 cm for the five vegetation types but was relatively stable below 80 cm; grassland had the greatest BD, while black locust had the lowest. The walnut orchard had the lowest Ks in the 0–80 cm soil layer. The apple orchard had the highest residual soil water content and field capacity. The apple orchard had significantly lower mean weight diameter (MWD) than the others, indicating low surface soil stability due to tillage management, increasing the risk of soil erosion. Overall, these results suggested that black locust had greater negative effects on soil properties than economic trees. Therefore, black locust establishment or planting density should be reduced in future vegetation restoration processes.

Abstract:Rational land use can enhance soil nutrient sequestration and control erosion, but the mechanisms of the ecological restoration of soil-aggregate-associated carbon and nitrogen are still not well understood. A large-scale ecological restoration program was launched in the Loess Plateau during the 1990s. The ecological restoration programs involved converting slope farmland to woodland, grassland, shrub land, and terrace. We studied their effects in relation to cultivated land as control on soil aggregate structure and stability and their associated organic carbon and total nitrogen contents to 60 cm soil depth in the Loess Plateau. Our results indicate that the restoration practices reduced soil aggregate fragmentation, increased soil structure stability, and transformed micro-aggregates into small and large aggregates. Comparing with the soil aggregate >0.25 mm in cultivated land, the amount in woodland, grassland, shrub land and terrace increased by 71%, 66%, 46%, and 35%, respectively, which improved soil health overall. The mean weight diameter of aggregate indicates that soil aggregate stability (SAS) increased and soil hydraulic erosion resistance improved. In conclusion, ecological restoration directly or indirectly affected SAS through the influence of soil organic carbon and total nitrogen in different soil layers. Results of this study provide a scientific reference for understanding stabilization of soil aggregate and regional restoration.

Abstract:Abstract In China, almost half of the total land area is degraded, mainly due to the unreasonable use of land for agricultural production. During the past half‐century, afforestation has become a popular management option to remedy degraded soils. In this paper, we studied the long‐term effects of afforestation on the major properties of soils with different textures. We measured the changes in soil physical, chemical, and fertility properties after 10, 20, and 30 years of afforestation with black locust ( Robinia pseudoacacia ) on abandoned farmland at five sites on the Loess Plateau, China, which is characterized by a temperate monsoon climate. The soil clay contents varied significantly among sites. The objectives were to understand how long‐term afforestation affects soil properties and whether such effects depend on the soil texture. Averaged across the five sites and the depths of 0–10 and 10–20 cm, afforestation resulted in significant increases in the proportion of macroaggregates (+22.5%), saturated hydraulic conductivity (+185.4%), organic matter content (+110.5%), and total nitrogen content (+110.5%) but significant decreases in the proportion of microaggregates (−21.9%) and bulk density (−10.8%). The silt + clay fraction, soil pH, and nitrate content were minimally affected by afforestation. The effects of afforestation were greater at 0–10 cm than at 10–20 cm, but they varied between sites. Furthermore, most soil metrics linearly responded to the time of afforestation, and such responses were dependent on the soil clay content. Our results suggest that long‐term afforestation improves soil fertility better in soils with a clay content of approximately 20%.

Abstract:Vegetation restoration has been proposed as an effective method for increasing both plant biomass and soil carbon (C) stocks. In this study, 204 publications (733 observations) were analyzed, focusing on the effects of vegetation restoration on soil organic carbon (SOC) in China. The results showed that SOC was increased by 45.33%, 24.43%, 30.29% and 27.98% at soil depths of 0–20 cm, 20–40 cm, 40–60 cm and > 60 cm after vegetation restoration, respectively. Restoration from both cropland and non-cropland increased the SOC content. The conversion of non-cropland was more efficient in SOC accumulation than the conversion of cropland did, especially in > 40 cm layers. In addition, the conversion to planted forest led to greater SOC accumulation than that to other land use did. Conversion period and initial SOC content extended more influence on soil C accumulation as the main factors after vegetation restoration than temperature and precipitation did. The SOC content significantly increased with restoration period after long-term vegetation restoration (> 40 yr), indicating a large potential for further accumulation of carbon in the soil, which could mitigate climate change in the near future.

Abstract:Afforestation of degraded land significantly influences soil organic carbon (SOC) and total nitrogen (STN) sequestration. The interaction effects of plantation age and climate gradient on SOC and STN changes following afforestation are not well understood. In this study, five sites were selected along a precipitation gradient (410~600 mm yr‐1) in the Loess Plateau. The SOC and STN stocks at a depth of 0‐200 cm were measured in cropland and black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) forests with different plantation ages, i.e., young forest (<15 years), middle‐aged forest (15‐25 years) and old forest (>25 years). The SOC and STN stocks in the 0‐200 cm profiles of young forest, middle‐aged forest and cropland increased significantly with mean annual precipitation (p<0.05), while the increasing trend of the SOC stocks of old forest was not significant, indicating an age‐dependent change in the SOC and STN stocks across the precipitation gradient. The SOC stock change (∆SOC) following afforestation increased with mean annual precipitation in young forest, but it had a decreasing trend in middle‐aged and old forests. The STN stock changes (∆STN) in the three forests were negative at most sites, and they all decreased along the precipitation gradient. There were significant positive correlations between ∆SOC and ∆STN (p<0.01), and 1 g STN stock accumulation was accompanied by 8.40 g, 6.10 g and 10.48 g SOC accumulation for young forest, middle‐aged forest and old forest, respectively. The different patterns of SOC and STN stock changes should be incorporated into soil C and N modelling and estimation.

Abstract:Vegetation restoration is a critical strategy for addressing ecosystem degradation globally. However, understanding the specific impacts of land-use changes, particularly the conversion of farmland to forestland and grassland, on soil nutrients and microbial biomass in the Loess Plateau remains limited and requires further evaluation. Therefore, this study was conducted to explore how these conversions affect soil organic carbon (SOC), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), and microbial biomass components under various land-use patterns. We studied the SOC, TN, TP, soil microbial biomass carbon (MBC), microbial biomass nitrogen (MBN), microbial biomass phosphorus (MBP) content and their ratios under six land-use patterns (Farmland (FL), Abandoned cropland (ACL), Natural grassland (NG), Alfalfa grassland (Medicago sativa L. (MS)), Spruce forestland (Picea asperata Mast. (PA)) and Cypress forestland (Platycladus orientalis (L.) Franco (PO))). The conversion of FL to grassland and forestland significantly increased C:N and C:P by 9.82%~64.12%, 10.57%~126.05%, and 51.44%~113.40%, 22.10%~116.09%, respectively. The conversion of FL to ACL reduced the C:N and C:P by 5.34%~13.57% and 1.51%~7.55%, respectively. The conversion of FL to NG can increase soil N:P. The conversion of FL to grassland and forestland increased soil MBC, MBN, and MBP by −31.54%~84.48%, −48.39%~1533.93%, −46.55%~173.85%, and −34.96%~17.13%, 68.72%~432.14%, −38.39%~318.46%, respectively. However, the MBC, MBN, and MBP contents in the soil converted from FL to ACL varied from −28.21%~11.95%, 11.17%~531.25%, and −82.64%~70.77%, respectively. Soil SOC, TN, TP, available potassium (AK), pH, and soil bulk density (BD) are the main factors causing microbial biomass differences. These results indicate that converting farmland into forestland and grassland can improve soil nutrient structure and increase soil microbial biomass and carbon accumulation. The results of this study provide theoretical support for the scientific management of regional land.

Abstract:Vegetation restoration tends to enhance soil carbon storage in severely degraded lands, which is of great significance to mitigate climate change. In this study, soil organic carbon, inorganic carbon and soil properties were investigated in a restored post-mining area in Shanxi province, eastern Loess Plateau. Through artificially planting Rhus typhina, Quercus liaotungensis and Pinus tabuliformis (referred to as RT, QL and PT, respectively), soil water and total nitrogen contents increased significantly. Soil organic carbon in restored sites increased by 101.9% compared with that of a non-restored site. Accumulation of litter and withered root with vegetation succession led to the increases of input of organic matter, which was beneficial to improve soil organic carbon storage. QL had significantly higher organic carbon sequestration rate (1.59 t ha−1 yr−1) than those of other tree species, which might be attributed to higher nitrogen content and litter input. Soil inorganic carbon accounted averagely for 70.1% of the total carbon storage. However, re-vegetation had no significant influence on soil inorganic carbon which was closely related with soil parent material and climate. Our results suggested that abandoned mine lands might serve as C sinks through appropriate restoration management. Indigenous QL would be suitable to be recommended as the preferred species for reclamation management of degraded lands. Because of a short duration of restoration, the dynamics of soil inorganic carbon during vegetation succession needs to be further studied to reveal potential C sequestration mechanism in arid and semi-arid regions.

Abstract:Afforestation is beneficial to improving soil carbon pools. However, due to the lack of deep databases, the variations in soil carbon and the combined effects of multiple factors after afforestation have yet to be adequately explored in >1 m deep soils, especially in areas with deep-rooted plants and thick vadose zones. This study examined the multivariate controls of soil organic carbon (SOC) and inorganic carbon (SIC) in 0–18 m deep under farmland, grassland, willow, and poplar in loess deposits. The novelty of this study is that the factors concurrently affecting deep soil carbon were investigated by multiwavelet coherence and structural equation models. On average, the SOC density (53.1 ± 5.0 kg m −2 ) was only 12% of SIC density (425.4 ± 13.8 kg m −2 ), with depth-dependent variations under different land use types. In the soil profiles, the variations in SOC were more obvious in the 0–6 m layer, while SIC variations were mainly observed in the 6–12 m layer. Compared with farmland (SOC: 17.0 kg m −2 ; SIC: 122.9 kg m −2 ), the plantation of deciduous poplar (SOC: 28.5 kg m −2 ; SIC: 144.2 kg m −2 ) increased the SOC and SIC density within the 0–6 m layer ( p 4 m), SOC and SIC intensities were affected by total nitrogen-magnetic susceptibility and magnetic susceptibility-water content, respectively. The structural equation model further identified that SOC density was directly controlled by total nitrogen (path coefficient = 0.64) and indirectly affected by magnetic susceptibility (path coefficient = 0.36). Further, SOC stimulated the SIC deposition by improving water conservation and electrical conductivity. This study provides new insights into afforestation-induced deep carbon cycles, which have crucial implications for forest management and enhancing ecosystem sustainability in arid regions.

Abstract:The large-scale vegetation restoration project on the Loess Plateau increased the ecosystem carbon (C) stocks and affected C budget in arid and semi-arid ecosystems. The specific details affecting the C stocks, their distribution, and dependence on land use and climate were never presented and generalized. We assessed the effects of climate factors and soil properties on ecosystem C stocks through field investigation across the Loess Plateau. The total C stocks in the four ecosystems: forestlands [0.36], shrublands [0.24], grasslands [1.18], and farmlands [1.05] was 2.84 Pg (1 Pg = 10 15 g), among which 30% were stored in topsoil (0–20 cm), 53% in above-ground biomass, and 17% in roots. The total ecosystem C density decreased according to the climate from the southeast (warm dry) to the northwest (cold moist) of the Loess Plateau. The ecosystem C density decreased with increasing temperature (from 5 to 15 °C), but increased with precipitation (from 200 to 700 mm). Variation partitioning analysis and structural equation models indicated that ecosystem C density was more explained by climate compared with soil properties. This supports the theory and empirical findings that large scale pattern of ecosystem C density is predominantly regulated by climate on the Loess Plateau. Our results highlight that grasslands are more predestined to store C compared with the other ecosystems, and the C stored in roots is substantial and should be considered when assessing C stocks and strongly contributes to soil organic matter formation. We suggest that investing in roots can be an effective strategy for meeting part of Loess Plateau C reduction goals to mitigate climate change, which is necessary for validating and parameterizing C models worldwide.
