Ergonomic Design for inclusive public spaces: a socio-demographic perspective on Chıld's ergonomıcs ın Umranıye and Kadikoy, Istanbul

She is Master Architecture by Istanbul Technical University,2001 and PhD in Architecture by Yildiz Technical University,2006. Lecturer in the Department of Architectural Design at YTU (design courses and architectural design studios,seminars,courses in graduate program in YTU,supervising masters and PhD thesis,co-supervising thesis in ITU) since 2001. Her most recent publications include a book on 'inclusive design in architecture' (2013),a chapter in the book; 'Istanbul Urban Design Guide',by Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (2016),a chapter in the book; and 'Towards a Barrier-free Turkey: Where Do We Stand? The Status Quo and Proposals' by Sabanci University (2013),and a paper; 'Inclusive Design for Urban Spaces'.Cigdem Canbay Turkyilmaz B. Arch,M.Sc.,PhD. Associate Professor at YTU and SamDAQU (Samarkand State University of Architecture and Construction) and Rector of SamDAQU since 2021. She got her PhD Degree at 2010 from Yildiz Technical University. She is a researcher and expert in the field of design knowledge,design education,basic design in architecture,ergonomics in architecture,urban ergonomics and cultural landscapes. She is the writer of several international journal papers. She also has extensive experience as an educator,including experience of classroom instruction,the incorporation of educational pedagogies and innovations into instruction,and unit/course management.

Abstract:This study employs mixed methods, integrating demographic variables to analyze public space space usage in child ergonomics Utilizing Space Syntax and Pierre Bourdieu's theory within the framework of inclusive public space, it explores the relationship and needs between ergonomics and the socio-demographic statuses of children. The research applies an analytical approach based on Bourdieu's focus on spatial capital to compare neighborhoods with varying socio-demographic characteristics in Istanbul's Umraniye and Kadikoy districts. A critical spatial analysis emerges from comparing 14 public spaces in Umraniye's Cakmak neighborhood (CS1) with a public area in Kadikoy's Suadiye neighborhood (CS2). Methodologically, the study includes weekday (day 1) and weekend (day 2) field observations, Space Syntax analysis, TSI 2022 demographic data, digital maps, and anthropometric measurements specific to children aged 7–11. This effective mixed methodology provides a notable comparative spatial examination in child ergonomics research, highlighting clear disparities between the public spaces in CS1 and CS2.
