Abstract:The purpose of this research is to investigate the influence that personalized, gamified, and PDF electronic reading practices have on the attitudes which fifth-grade students possess toward e-reading experiences, as well as how these stances affect the students' motivation and reading comprehension while they are learning English as a second/foreign language (EFL). For the purpose of the study, there were a total of 84 fifth-grade kids from public schools in Greece, who participated. These students were split up into three different experimental groups and a control one. Participants in the experimental groups read throughout the treatment period according to a preset schedule using one of three diverse electronic reading formats (PDF, gamified, or customized), whilst participants in the control group read utilizing a paper guided reading plan. The participants' experiences playing video games online were analyzed via a technique called the quasi-experimental approach. According to the findings of the research, the experimental group and the control group did not significantly vary from one another in terms of their levels of reading comprehension. On the other hand, in comparison to the participants in the control group, those who took part in the experiments reported having more favorable sentiments regarding their electronic reading experiences and were more inspired to read. As indicated from the research findings, kids may experience an increase in their desire to read when they use electronic gadgets. This study has implications for educators and policymakers as they consider incorporating digital reading practices into their teaching methods, particularly when it comes to improving students' motivation to read.
Digital or Print? A Comparison of Preschoolers’ Comprehension, Vocabulary, and Engagement From a Print Book and an e-Book

Abstract:Increasingly, children are engaging in early literacy experiences through digital devices. This raises questions about how electronic reading compares to print reading. To assess this, we randomly assigned 200 children (3–5 years) to be read the same book (1) with auto-narration on a tablet or 2) by a researcher from a print book. Reading was recorded and coded for behavioral and emotional engagement and vocalizations. Children were also tested on their story comprehension and vocabulary. Children had slightly higher posttest scores in the print condition. Older children and females also scored higher. There was an interaction between weekly tablet use and book platform. Children were equally engaged with the e-book and print book, but vocalized more about the device in the e-book condition. Findings suggest that e-books offer many of the same, but not all, of the educational affordance as print books. Additionally, novelty might be important in supporting comprehension.

Abstract:<p>Digital books, such as e‐books, story apps, picture book apps, and interactive stories, are narratives presented on touchscreens with multimedia and interactive features. Evidence suggests that early reading of print versus digital books is associated with different patterns of parent–child engagement and children's outcomes. Parents' verbal scaffolding, children's age, and the congruence between a book's narrative and its interactive and multimedia features are three documented process variables that explain the difference between reading print and digital books. To maximize the added value of digital books for children, we need to study the interaction among the characteristics of parents, children, and books; we also need to target these interactions through interventions and through collaborations between designers and researchers.</p>

Metered-Dose Inhalers and Nebulizers in the Acute Setting

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: This article evaluates the current literature comparing beta-adrenergic agonists administered via metered-dose inhalers (MDIs) with nebulizer devices in adult and pediatric patients. These studies focus on the acute treatment of asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in the emergency department and other acute care settings. DATA SOURCES: English-language journal articles published between 1980 and 1991. STUDY SELECTION: Eight studies that compared beta-adrenergic agonists administered via an MDI or an MDI with a spacing device versus a nebulizer were identified. All of the studies were either poorly designed or had few subjects. By consensus of the authors, all were included in the review. DATA EXTRACTION: Studies were assessed according to methodologic strength (e.g., prospective, comparative). DATA SYNTHESIS: Five studies found no differences between administration methods, one study found metered-dose inhalation to be superior, and another found nebulization to be superior based on observed improvements in pulmonary function tests. There were no significant differences in adverse-reaction rates. When surveyed, subjects preferred MDIs to nebulizers. There were marked variations in doses administered within and between studies. There was no consideration given to doses potentially delivered to the lungs. CONCLUSIONS: There is no significant difference between nebulizers and MDIs plus a spacer with regard to the administration of beta-agonists in the treatment of acute asthma. There are insufficient data to conclusively support the role of spacers in this setting. The choice of a specific delivery method at this time must be determined on an individual basis, taking into account the issues of cost, timeliness of administration, and personnel availability.
Interactive Reading with Young Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Children in eBooks Versus Print Books

Abstract:Interactive storybook reading is effective in enhancing deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) children's emergent literacy skills. The current digital era gives parents more opportunities to read books with their child. From an early age on, interaction between parent and child during literacy activities is very important for the development of emergent literacy skills. The purpose of the present study was to explore the opportunities of eBooks on a tablet for interactive reading with young DHH children. Parent and child interactive behavior in reading print books was compared to eBooks in 18 parents and their 1- to 3-year-old DHH child. All parents followed an interactive reading program after which their interactive reading behaviors were observed while reading print books and eBooks with their child. Results mainly showed similar interactive reading behaviors in parents and children when reading print books or eBooks, except for a lower occurrence of pointing to pictures/objects in the parent behavior when reading the eBooks. These results give parents and professionals even more opportunities for interactive storybook reading with DHH children, and thus more opportunities to enhance their language and literacy skills. Abstract:Emergent literacy is the term used to describe the reading and writing experiences of young children before they learn to write and read conventionally, and it is important for the construction of children’s early reading skills and the enhancement of their later reading performance. The systematic review was conducted to examine the effectiveness of children’s interactive reading apps in promoting emergent literacy for children between the ages of three and eight over the last decade (2013-2022). A total of 50 studies were included in this review, and it can be concluded that multimedia features (e.g., a dictionary, background music, and animated pictures) in children’s interactive reading apps are effective for enhancing emergent literacy. Conversely, interactive functions (such as games and hotspots) may distract children’s attention, leading to poor reading performances. This review also demonstrated the positive effects of children’s interactive reading apps on improving their learning outcomes and behavior. In addition, the results indicated that well-designed apps could promote children’s emerging literacy skills. However, more in-depth studies will be required in the future to provide designers with a well-defined guideline for designing reading apps for children.
A Study on the Impact of Digital Picture Book Reading on Children's Reading Literacy

Abstract:With the advent of the Internet era, digital picture books, as a booming reading resource for children, have gradually become the starting point for most children to read. However, digital reading also faces issues such as information overload and distraction, and further attention should be paid to children's reading literacy in the digital reading environment. Therefore, this article selects 26 students from a kindergarten in Shangqiu City, Henan Province, China as the research subjects. The subjects are divided into an experimental group and a control group for a one-month comparative study. The experimental group uses the "Companion Fish Picture Book" iPad App to achieve digital picture book reading, while the control group uses traditional paper picture books for reading. Two groups of students were evaluated by the teacher and their grades were analyzed. The results showed that children who read digital picture books had a good research impact on vocabulary, reading comprehension, and reading interest. The conclusion was drawn that digital picture book reading can significantly improve children's reading literacy.
The impact of parent mediation on young children's home digital literacy practices and learning: A narrative review

Abstract:Background In today's society, a growing body of literature attests to the importance of young children's early digital literacy skills in their home environments and how acquisition of these digital literacy skills relates to their future learning and digital literacy. Objectives Research on young children's digital literacy practices at home was reviewed to explore the positive and negative influences on early learning. This is important due to the children's rapid uptake of online digital technologies over the past decade. Methods Peer‐reviewed research articles on home digital literacy practices of children (aged 0–8 years old) published between 2010 and 2021 from four education databases were carefully selected based upon pre‐determined criteria and examined using content analysis. Results and Conclusion A high proportion of studies (29 of the 31; 93.5%) demonstrated significant benefits of young children gaining a range of skills, including digital operational, early literacy and language, socio‐emotional, and STEM, through the use of digital technologies at home. Five of the 31 (16.12%) studies reported negative effects of digital technologies in the home context, including distraction, aggressive behaviour, and false self‐confidence. Tablets and smartphone use gained greater momentum in the home context, especially between 2015 and 2021, and there was a positive shift in parental mediation, family involvement, and the children's home digital literacy practices. Implications By leveraging children's acquisition of digital literacy skills in the home and taking into account the sociocultural context, we can enhance young children's preparation for the future and provide opportunities for skill development across various learning domains.

Abstract:Background Investment in mobile devices to support primary or elementary education is increasing and must be informed by robust evidence to demonstrate impact. This systematic review of randomised controlled trials sought to identify the overall impact of mobile devices to support literacy and numeracy outcomes in mainstream primary classrooms. Objectives The aim of this systematic review was to understand how mobile devices are used in primary/elementary education around the world, and in particular, determine how activities undertaken using mobile devices in the primary classroom might impact literacy and numeracy attainment for the pupils involved. Within this context, mobile devices are defined as tablets (including iPads and other branded devices), smartphones (usually those with a touchscreen interface and internet connectivity) and handheld games consoles (again usually with touchscreen and internet‐enabled). The interventions of interest were those aimed at improving literacy and/or numeracy for children aged 4–12 within the primary/elementary school (or equivalent) classroom. Specifically, the review aimed to answer the following research questions: ‐ What is the effect of mobile device integration in the primary school classroom on children's literacy and numeracy outcomes? ‐ Are there specific devices which are more effective in supporting literacy and numeracy? (Tablets, smartphones, or handheld games consoles) ‐ Are there specific classroom integration activities which moderate effectiveness in supporting literacy and numeracy? ‐ Are there specific groups of children for whom mobile devices are more effective in supporting literacy and numeracy? (Across age group and gender). ‐ Do the benefits of mobile devices for learning last for any time beyond the study? ‐ What is the quality of available evidence on the use of mobile devices in primary/elementary education, and where is further research needed in this regard? An Expert Advisory Group supported the review process at key stages to ensure relevance to current practice. Search Methods The search strategy was designed to retrieve both published and unpublished literature, and incorporated relevant journal and other databases with a focus on education and social sciences. Robust electronic database searches were undertaken (12 databases, including APA PsychInfo, Web of Science, ERIC, British Education Index and others, and relevant government and other websites), as well as a hand‐search of relevant journals and conference proceedings. Contact was also made with prominent authors in the field to identify any ongoing or unpublished research. All searches and author contact took place between October and November 2020. The review team acknowledges that new studies will likely have emerged since and are not captured at this time. A further update to the review in the future is important and would build on the evidence reflected here. Selection Criteria The review included children within mainstream primary/elementary/kindergarten education settings in any country (aged 4–12), and interventions or activities initiated within the primary school classroom (or global equivalent) that used mobile devices (including tablets, smartphones, or hand‐held gaming devices) to intentionally support literacy or numeracy learning. In terms of study design, only Randomised Controlled Trials were included in the review. Data Collection and Analysis A total of 668 references were identified through a robust search strategy including published and unpublished literature. Following duplicate screening, 18 relevant studies, including 11,126 participants, 14 unique interventions, and 46 relevant outcome measures were synthesised using Robust Variance Estimation and a random effects meta‐analysis model. Risk of Bias assessment was undertaken by three reviewers using the ROB2 tool to assess the quality of studies, with 13 studies rated as having some concerns, and 5 as having high risk of bias. Qualitative data was also extracted and analysed in relation to the types of interventions included to allow a comparison of the key elements of each. Technology in Early Childhood Education: Electronic Books for Improving Students’ Literacy Skills

Abstract:This paper examines teachers' perceptions about using electronic books (e-books) in early childhood education to improve students' literacy skills. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 13 teachers in three different schools for this aim. Thematic analysis technique was used to analyze the views. The findings suggest that teachers' perceptions of e-books are generally positive. During the interviews, most of the teachers stated that using e-books in early childhood increased the students' interest in reading and their reading competencies. As a mechanism for rewarding, electronic badges integrated into the e-books were reported as a positive factor increasing the students' interest in reading. However, technical problems and parents' limited guidance were reported as the biggest challenges for the students and the teachers in the study.
A Comparison of Children’s Reading on Paper Versus Screen: A Meta-Analysis

Abstract:This meta-analysis examines the inconsistent findings across experimental studies that compared children’s learning outcomes with digital and paper books. We quantitatively reviewed 39 studies reported in 30 articles (n = 1,812 children) and compared children’s story comprehension and vocabulary learning in relation to medium (reading on paper versus on-screen), design enhancements in digital books, the presence of a dictionary, and adult support for children aged between 1 and 8 years. The comparison of digital versus paper books that only differed by digitization showed lower comprehension scores for digital books. Adults’ mediation during print books’ reading was more effective than the enhancements in digital books read by children independently. However, with story-congruent enhancements, digital books outperformed paper books. An embedded dictionary had no or negative effect on children’s story comprehension but positively affected children’s vocabulary learning. Findings are discussed in relation to the cognitive load theory and practical design implications.

Expanding the boundaries of shared book reading: E-books and printed books in parent–child reading as support for children’s language

Abstract:Early shared book reading activities are considered to be a promising context for supporting young children’s language development. Ninety low socioeconomic status preschoolers and their mothers were randomly assigned to one of three groups: (1) e-book reading; (2) printed book reading; (3) regular kindergarten literacy program (control). Mothers of children in the intervention groups received guidance on how to read to their child, and had five sessions of reading within a period of two weeks. The final session was videotaped and transcribed. Children in both intervention groups showed significant progress in word comprehension and phonological awareness compared to the control group. Children’s initial knowledge in each skill and both interventions contributed to language progress more than maternal education, frequency of shared book reading and computer use. The authors conclude that parents and children may expand their shared book reading experience to include e-books, which may serve as promising contexts for developing young children’s language.

Abstract:The most recent research studies in the field of reading describe a new cultural ecosystem in which analog and digital reading coexist and contribute to transform what is read, either through the way reading is performed or by promoting reading. In this context, the training of critical readers is particularly important, an aspect emphasized by UNESCO and the curriculum frameworks based on its premises. In order to provide data for reflection on this question, this paper presents an essentially qualitative and interpretive documentary study of a sample of 836 virtual epitexts that promote children's picturebooks. The selected documents consist of the postings by 45 publishing houses between 2020 and 2022 on their YouTube and Vimeo channels. The results of the content analysis present the current tendencies in digital promotion of children's books and the strategies most likely to encourage critical reading. The insistence on the author's presence, the emphasis on the materiality of the book as an object, the strengthening of artistic discourse and the hybridization of reality and fiction, among other aspects, all propose a type of reading that favors the development of critical thinking. The results are complemented by a selection of virtual epitexts suggested to mediators and readers as resources of interest in promoting critical reading in socio-educational contexts.

Abstract:Technological tools are considered an important part of daily life for young children. The study explores what types of digital books are available for children. This research was conducted with a qualitative design and the research data was collected through document analysis. The e-books (n=261) were randomly selected for evaluation from the Internet or the APP store. The findings showed that more than half of the e-books were electronically re-contextualized literary texts. It has been seen that the majority of digital books created in this way have been transferred to digital media in the form of scanned digital books named text-based files. It has been observed that less than half of e-books are digitally originated literary texts. It has been seen that the majority of digital books created in this way are e-stories for early readers. In addition, it is seen that there are very few examples of e-narratives with interactive story contexts that have features that increase the interaction of the reader with the book. At this point, it will be important to focus on developing examples of digital resources supported by various multimedia elements.
The Effects of Educational Technology Interventions on Literacy in Elementary School: A Meta-Analysis

Abstract:Review of Educational Research, Ahead of Print. Educational technology is ubiquitous, and educational technology interventions often target literacy. However, there is insufficient information about the effects of these interventions on literacy outcomes in elementary school. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of quasi-experimental and experimental studies published between 2010 and 2023 that evaluated the effects of educational technology interventions on the literacy outcomes of K–5 students. The meta-analysis across 119 studies from 105 manuscripts revealed positive effects for decoding (0.33), language comprehension (0.30), reading comprehension (0.23), and writing proficiency (0.81). However, when isolating effects for standardized measures, effects for decoding (0.23), language comprehension (0.12), reading comprehension (0.14), and writing proficiency (0.34) were reduced. Moderator analyses suggested that effects can depend on outcome, intervention, and participant characteristics. In the discussion, we describe and contextualize findings and call for more research to further unpack moderator effects. We also discuss possible implications for practice and policy.

Abstract:Background Digital literacy instruction is increasingly common in contemporary practices and can accommodate learners with a range of needs. This systematic review explores the use and effects of technology during reading comprehension instruction involving school‐aged children learning English as an additional language (EAL). Our aim was to provide broad, global coverage that reflects the state of research in the field. Methods We searched databases using terms related to EAL, reading comprehension and digital literacy instruction to identify relevant studies published on the topic between 2010 and 2023. Data were extracted regarding study context, participant characteristics, methodology, instruction characteristics and outcomes. We quantified the outcomes of instruction using standardised measures of effect size where possible and appraised the research quality of each study. Results A total of 4382 studies were identified. Of these, 53 met our inclusion criteria. Studies were conducted across a variety of low‐ and high‐resource environments, including countries where English is a majority language and those where it is a non‐majority language. Learners from kindergarten through 11th grade were included across the studies. A range of reading comprehension strategies were utilised within the context of digital instruction, with multiple‐strategy instruction the most common. Digital instruction resulted in statistically significant gains in reading comprehension in 32 studies (small to large effect sizes). Our research quality analysis revealed variability in terms of rigour, further adding to the diversity across studies. We conducted a sub‐analysis of eight studies that met the highest standards of research quality. Like the full set of 53 studies, these eight studies reported on diverse types of digital instruction and diverse reading comprehension outcomes but tended to result in smaller effect sizes. Conclusions Digital reading comprehension instruction can result in reading comprehension gains for children learning EAL, though findings are mixed. Further high‐quality research is needed.

Abstract:Abstract Participation in interactive reading activities can help children with language delays and disorders build important early language and literacy skills. Digital texts (i.e., books presented on tablets and computers) provide new opportunities for learning and supporting communication. Recently, researchers have investigated the use of digital texts that include visual scene displays (VSDs). In this approach, pictures on a tablet are programmed with “hotspots”; when the picture is touched, a word is spoken aloud. In addition, transition to literacy (T2L) features, including dynamic presentation of the text when a hotspot is activated, can be implemented with VSDs. This article provides a review of interactive reading interventions with children with language delays and disorders, and a discussion of the impact of using digital texts. We also describe the results of a pilot study intervention using digital texts including VSDs and T2L features with children with language delays in an inclusive preschool setting.

Parent-Toddler Behavior and Language Differ When Reading Electronic and Print Picture Books

Abstract:Little is known about the language and behaviors that typically occur when adults read electronic books with infants and toddlers, and which are supportive of learning. In this study, we report differences in parent and child behavior and language when reading print versus electronic versions of the same books, and investigate links between behavior and vocabulary learning. Parents of 102 toddlers aged 17-26 months were randomly assigned to read two commercially available electronic books or two print format books with identical content with their toddler. After reading, children were asked to identify an animal labeled in one of the books in both two-dimensional (pictures) and three-dimensional (replica objects) formats. Toddlers who were read the electronic books paid more attention, made themselves more available for reading, displayed more positive affect, participated in more page turns, and produced more content-related comments during reading than those who were read the print versions of the books. Toddlers also correctly identified a novel animal labeled in the book more often when they had read the electronic than the traditional print books. Availability for reading and attention to the book acted as mediators in predicting children's animal choice at test, suggesting that electronic books supported children's learning by way of increasing their engagement and attention. In contrast to prior studies conducted with older children, there was no difference between conditions in behavioral or off-topic talk for either parents or children. More research is needed to determine the potential hazards and benefits of new media formats for very young children.
The Power of a Story: Reading Live and Electronic Storybooks to Young Children

Abstract:Stories play a critical role in the literacy development of young children, providing them with rich experiences that support their growth as readers. In this chapter, we first describe the landscape of stories in e-books and educational media. We then move to examine the potential for media to reach preschoolers from low-income communities, presenting two case studies of children who read stories in both live and digital media. The research question guiding these case studies was: How effectively can digital books reach young children from underserved populations? Findings from the first case study revealed no differences between the digital or live platform. Preschool children were able to learn from digital platforms and had similar early literacy gains as children who experienced live presentations of storybooks. Findings from the second case study demonstrated that the content of the storybook actually had a stronger influence over a child’s comprehension than the medium did itself, suggesting children’s interest in stories are critical for early literacy. Accordingly, this book chapter does not recommend against the use of digital storybooks, but pushes for a both-and agenda between digital- and live-story use to cultivate emergent literacy among young children and unlock the power of a story.
The effects of interactive electronic picture books on young children’s oral expression skills

Abstract:The application of interactive electronic picture books can strengthen young children’s reading comprehension skills. Interactive electronic picture books that involve interaction with sensors, with the interaction integrated into the story, should be developed to enhance children’s reading experience and improve their oral expression skills. Interactive electronic picture books that involved children manipulating stuffed animals containing sensors that provided feedback were developed for this study. Visual, auditory, and tactile stimuli can be used to create an interactive feedback system. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with teachers, who gave their opinions regarding the curriculum of their preschool. The results indicate that the intuitiveness of the system helped improve the children’s reading experience, strengthened their motivation to read, and improved their cognitive abilities. In addition, interactive electronic picture books were found to improve the children’s oral expression skills.
