Abstract:Abdominal electrocardiogram is an important means to obtain fetal health condition during high-risk pregnancy. In this paper, a novel method for extracting fetal heart rate from multi-channel mother abdomen electrocardiograms is proposed using fast multivariate empirical mode decomposition technique (FMEMD). Firstly, FMEMD decomposes the multichannel ECG signals into a set of modes. Two significant channels are selected according to the standard deviation of the fifth layer. Then the continuous wavelet transform technique (CWT) is applied to these two channels to denoise. The baseline is removed by zero-crossing rate. Following, the interference of the mother QRS complexes and non-overlapped fetal R-peaks can be eliminated and detected by CWT coefficient. The overlapped fetal R-peaks are obtained by combining the dynamic pattern matching program and creative algorithm. The proposed method achieves an accuracy of 99.9% on the existing data set, and the calculating time is only 1/6.39 of the MEMD-based method.
Automatic Optimization of Multichannel Electrode Configurations for Robust Fetal Heart Rate Detection by Blind Source Separation

Abstract:Objective: Fetal heart rate (fHR) evaluation is fundamental to guarantee timely medical intervention in case of pregnancy complications. Due to the limitations of traditional cardiotocography, multichannel electrophysiological recording was proposed as a viable alternative, which requires Blind Source Separation (BSS) techniques. Yet effective and reliable separation of the fetal ECG remains challenging due to multiple noise sources and the effects of varying fetal position. In this work, we demonstrate that the adopted electrode configuration plays a key role in the effectiveness of BSS and propose guidelines for optimal electrode positioning. Moreover, a model is proposed to automatically predict the most suited configuration for accurate BSS-based fHR estimation with a minimal number of leads, to facilitate practical implementation. Methods: We compared fHR estimation accuracy with different electrode configurations on in-silico data, identifying the optimal configuration for a recent BSS method. Based on features extracted from raw signals, we proposed a support vector regression model to automatically identify the best electrode configuration in terms of fHR estimation accuracy and to dynamically adjust it to varying fetal presentation. Evaluation was performed on real and synthetic data. Results: Guidelines for the optimal electrode configuration are proposed by using 4 leads. Prediction of configuration quality shows 80.9% accuracy; the optimal configurat- ion is recognized in 92.2% of the subjects. Conclusion: The proposed method successfully predicts the quality of the configurations, demonstrating the impact of the electrode configuration on the BSS performance. Significance: The method holds potential for long-term fetal monitoring, by dynamically choosing the optimal configuration.

Abstract:A meta-analysis of 27 studies on pain management interventions with children was conducted using two decades of research reported in five disciplines. One-fifth of these studies were in the nursing literature and 78 % were published since 1979. Two complementary methods of calculating the effectiveness of pain management interventions were used for each of three outcome categories. Fisher's Combined test procedure was used to combine the results of the independent studies, to determine if a significant relationship existed between pain management programs and children's response. An overall effect size (r) was also calculated. Significant relationships of small magnitude were found between pain management interventions and child's response for behavioral (r = .41, x2 = 181.97, p < .0001), self-report (r = .34, x2 = 122.06, p < .0001;, and physiologic (r = .30, r2= 88.29, p < .0001; measures.

Abstract:Objective. Perinatal asphyxia poses a significant risk to neonatal health, necessitating accurate fetal heart rate monitoring for effective detection and management. The current gold standard, cardiotocography, has inherent limitations, highlighting the need for alternative approaches. The emerging technology of non-invasive fetal electrocardiography shows promise as a new sensing technology for fetal cardiac activity, offering potential advancements in the detection and management of perinatal asphyxia. Although algorithms for fetal QRS detection have been developed in the past, only a few of them demonstrate accurate performance in the presence of noise and artifacts. Approach. In this work, we propose Power-MF, a new algorithm for fetal QRS detection combining power spectral density and matched filter techniques. We benchmark Power-MF against three open-source algorithms on two recently published datasets (Abdominal and Direct Fetal ECG Database: ADFECG, subsets B1 Pregnancy and B2 Labour; Non-invasive Multimodal Foetal ECG-Doppler Dataset for Antenatal Cardiology Research: NInFEA). Main results. Our results show that Power-MF outperforms state-of-the-art algorithms on ADFECG (B1 Pregnancy: 99.5 % ± 0.5 % F1-score, B2 Labour: 98.0 % ± 3.0 % F1-score) and on NInFEA in three of six electrode configurations by being more robust against noise. Significance. Through this work, we contribute to improving the accuracy and reliability of fetal cardiac monitoring, an essential step toward early detection of perinatal asphyxia with the long-term goal of reducing costs and making prenatal care more accessible.

Abstract:Despite wearable electronic devices having enormous potential applications, the recording quality has not sufficiently met the requirements for fetal disease detection. In this article, we aim to propose a novel framework for fetal electrocardiography (ECG) extraction, where the hybrid approach mainly considers the combination of a novel adaptive maternal QRS removal (AQRSR) algorithm and a tensor-based joint blind source separation (JBSS) approach. To adapt to the dynamic change of the ECG signal and suppress the powerful maternal heartbeat, AQRSR is explored with an adaptive template, which is generated by a model consisting of a generator, discriminator, and transformer. By replacing the oldest segmentation with the newest cycle, the approach is capable of quickly adapting to the estimated output to match the new input. In addition, due to the significant crossover between the target signal and the noise, even if the maternal ECG removal processing is implemented, the residual signal inevitably contains fetal ECG, part of maternal ECG, and noise. As a consequence of this, a novel JBSS that incorporates tensor decomposition is formulated to separate fetal heartbeat from long-term recordings contaminated with maternal movements noise and heartbeat interference. By dividing the collected data into multiple segments, this method can extract fetal ECG signals by exploiting the signals that are not only statistically independent within each segment but can be dependent on different segments. Experimental results show that even if the recorded signals are contaminated by the noise, the proposed framework has comparable better performance on fetal ECG extraction.

Abstract:The fetal ECG derived from abdominal leads provides an alternative to standard means of fetal monitoring. Furthermore, it permits long-term and ambulant recordings, which expands the range diagnostic possibilities for evaluating the fetal health state. However, due to the temporal and spectral overlap of maternal and fetal signals, the usage of abdominal leads imposes the need for elaborated signal processing routines.In this work a modular combination of processing techniques is presented. Its core consists of two maternal ECG estimation techniques, namely the extended Kalman smoother (EKS) and template adaption (TA) in combination with an innovative detection algorithm. Our detection method employs principles of evolutionary computing to detect fetal peaks by considering the periodicity and morphological characteristics of the fetal signal. In a postprocessing phase, single channel detections are combined by means of kernel density estimation and heart rate correction.The described methodology was presented during the Computing in Cardiology Challenge 2013. The entry was the winner of the closed-source events with average scores for events 4/5 with 15.1/3.32 (TA) and 69.5/4.58 (EKS) on training set-A and 20.4/4.57 (TA) and 219/7.69 (EKS) on test set-B, respectively. Using our own clinical data (24 subjects each 20 min recordings) and statistical measures beyond the Challenge's scoring system, we further validated the proposed method. For our clinical data we obtained an average detection rate of 82.8% (TA) and 83.4% (EKS). The achieved results show that the proposed methods are able produce reliable fetal heart rate estimates from a restricted number of abdominal leads.

Abstract:The abdominal electrocardiogram (AECG) gives a safe and non-invasive way to monitor fetal well-being during pregnancy. However, due to the overlap with maternal ECG (MECG) as well as significant external noise, it is challenging to extract weak fetal ECG (FECG) using surface electrodes. In this study, we introduce a novel periodic progressive FastICA peel-off (PPFP) method for noninvasive extraction of weak surface FECG signals, leveraging the two-step FastICA method and a peel-off strategy from the progressive FastICA peel-off (PFP) approach. Specifically, for ECG signals, the periodic constrained FastICA that integrates ECG signal characteristics enables precise extraction of MECG and FECG spike trains. Additionally, a peel-off strategy incorporating SVD waveform reconstruction ensures comprehensive identification of subtle source signals. The performance of the proposed method was examined on public datasets with reference, synthetic data and clinical data, with an F1-scores for FECG extraction on public dataset of 99.59%, on synthetic data with the highest noise level of 99.50%, which are all superior to other comparative methods. Furthermore, clearly periodic and physiologically consistent FECG signals were extracted from clinically collected data. The results indicates that our proposed method has potential and effectiveness to separate MECG and weak FECG from multichannel AECG with high precision in high noise condition, which is of vital importance for ensuring the safety of both the fetus and the mother, as well as the advancement of artificial intelligent clinical monitoring.

FetalCare: A Home Telemonitoring System for Wearable Fetal-ECG and EHG Acquisition During Pregnancy

Abstract:A wearable and remote fetal monitoring system, FetalCare, is specifically developed for home use. It comprises a stretchable on-skin patch and a wearable pod to capture, process, and transmit fetal signals. Data received by a Bluetooth dongle is processed by edge computing to remove diverse noises and interferences and then displayed by a fetal monitoring platform integrated with cloud services. The highly integrated system can simultaneously measure up to 6-channel electrohysterography (EHG) and 3-channel fetal electrocardiogram (FECG) signals from the abdomen using just a 4-channel data acquisition chip. Electrically conductive composites (ECCs) and silicone implement the stretchable on-skin electrode. The compact wearable pod achieves low input noise of 0.191μVrms (250Hz bandwidth) while consuming 56mW and can operate continuously for up to 36 hours. We use edge computing to process fetal signals, which utilize the fast independent component analysis (FastICA) and Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) to obtain high-quality FECG and EHG signals. The fetal monitoring platform based on InfluxDB and Grafana supports real-time, remote monitoring with low latency and historical data retrieval. Finally, we used the Contraction Consistency Index (CCI) to assess the EHG and used metrics such as sensitivity (Se), positive predictive accuracy (PPV), accuracy (ACC), and their harmonic mean (F1) to assess the FECG. The CCI for EHG signals measured by the FetalCare system is 0.8, which implies a highly consistent result with the clinical CTG equipment. The average Se, PPV, ACC, and F1 scores for FQRS complexes extraction are 97.97%, 98.62%, 96.58%, and 98.25%, respectively.

Abstract:This article presents an innovative approach to analyzing and extracting electrocardiogram (ECG) signals from the abdomen and thorax of pregnant women, with the primary goal of isolating fetal ECG (fECG) and maternal ECG (mECG) signals. To resolve the difficulties related to the low amplitude of the fECG, various noise sources during signal acquisition, and the overlapping of R waves, we developed a new method for extracting ECG signals using blind source separation techniques. This method is based on independent component analysis algorithms to detect and accurately extract fECG and mECG signals from abdomen and thorax data. To validate our approach, we carried out experiments using a real and reliable database for the evaluation of fECG extraction algorithms. Moreover, to demonstrate real-time applicability, we implemented our method in an embedded card linked to electronic modules that measure blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) and body temperature, as well as the transmission of data to a web server. This enables us to present all information related to the fetus and its mother in a mobile application to assist doctors in diagnosing the fetus's condition. Our results demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach in isolating fECG and mECG signals under difficult conditions and also calculating different heart rates (fBPM and mBPM), which offers promising prospects for improving fetal monitoring and maternal healthcare during pregnancy.
An open source autocorrelation-based method for fetal heart rate estimation from one-dimensional Doppler ultrasound

Abstract:Objective: Open research on fetal heart rate (FHR) estimation is relatively rare, and evidence for the utility of metrics derived from Doppler ultrasound devices has historically remained hidden in the proprietary documentation of commercial entities, thereby inhibiting its assessment and improvement. Nevertheless, recent studies have attempted to improve FHR estimation; however, these methods were developed and tested using datasets composed of few subjects and are therefore unlikely to be generalizable on a population level. The work presented here introduces a reproducible and generalizable autocorrelation (AC)-based method for FHR estimation from one-dimensional Doppler ultrasound (1D-DUS) signals. Approach: Simultaneous fetal electrocardiogram (fECG) and 1D-DUS signals generated by a hand-held Doppler transducer in a fixed position were captured by trained healthcare workers in a European hospital. The fECG QRS complexes were identified using a previously published fECG extraction algorithm and were then over-read to ensure accuracy. An AC-based method to estimate FHR was then developed on this data, using a total of 721 1D-DUS segments, each 3.75 s long, and parameters were tuned with Bayesian optimization. The trained FHR estimator was tested on two additional (independent) hand-annotated Doppler-only datasets recorded with the same device but on different populations: one composed of 3938 segments (from 99 fetuses) acquired in rural Guatemala, and another composed of 894 segments (from 17 fetuses) recorded in a hospital in the UK. Main results: The proposed AC-based method was able to estimate FHR within 10% of the reference FHR values 96% of the time, with an accuracy of 97% for manually identified good quality segments in both of the independent test sets. Significance: This is the first work to publish open source code for FHR estimation from 1D-DUS data. The method was shown to satisfy estimations within 10% of the reference FHR values and it therefore defines a minimum accuracy for the field to match or surpass. Our work establishes a basis from which future methods can be developed to more accurately estimate FHR variability for assessing fetal wellbeing from 1D-DUS signals.
Extraction of fetal ECG signal by an improved method using extended Kalman smoother framework from single channel abdominal ECG signal

Abstract:This paper proposes a five-stage based methodology to extract the fetal electrocardiogram (FECG) from the single channel abdominal ECG using differential evolution (DE) algorithm, extended Kalman smoother (EKS) and adaptive neuro fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) framework. The heart rate of the fetus can easily be detected after estimation of the fetal ECG signal. The abdominal ECG signal contains fetal ECG signal, maternal ECG component, and noise. To estimate the fetal ECG signal from the abdominal ECG signal, removal of the noise and the maternal ECG component presented in it is necessary. The pre-processing stage is used to remove the noise from the abdominal ECG signal. The EKS framework is used to estimate the maternal ECG signal from the abdominal ECG signal. The optimized parameters of the maternal ECG components are required to develop the state and measurement equation of the EKS framework. These optimized maternal ECG parameters are selected by the differential evolution algorithm. The relationship between the maternal ECG signal and the available maternal ECG component in the abdominal ECG signal is nonlinear. To estimate the actual maternal ECG component present in the abdominal ECG signal and also to recognize this nonlinear relationship the ANFIS is used. Inputs to the ANFIS framework are the output of EKS and the pre-processed abdominal ECG signal. The fetal ECG signal is computed by subtracting the output of ANFIS from the pre-processed abdominal ECG signal. Non-invasive fetal ECG database and set A of 2013 physionet/computing in cardiology challenge database (PCDB) are used for validation of the proposed methodology. The proposed methodology shows a sensitivity of 94.21%, accuracy of 90.66%, and positive predictive value of 96.05% from the non-invasive fetal ECG database. The proposed methodology also shows a sensitivity of 91.47%, accuracy of 84.89%, and positive predictive value of 92.18% from the set A of PCDB.

Abstract:Continuous monitoring of fetal health requires the accurate calculation of the Fetal Heart Rate (FHR) by efficiently isolating fetal Electrocardiogram (fECG) from non-invasive abdominal Electrocardiogram (aECG). There are numerous solutions proposed for this problem, having its own restrictions. This paper introduces a novel three-stage hybrid adaptive approach for fECG extraction and FHR determination from aECG. The proposed framework is an amalgamation of independent component analysis (ICA), adaptive exponential functional link network (AEFLN), and novel wavelet thresholding (NWT). The proposed work aims to determine the best quality fetal R-peaks for calculating fetal heart rate (FHR). ICA is a blind source separation technique that uses all the information from the multichannel inputs to determine the maternal Electrocardiogram (mECG) and enhanced aECG. In the next stage, a non-linear adaptive filter, AEFLN, is used for the extraction of fECG. This approach requires no additional algorithm for polarity reversal and time alignment before AEFLN. At last, NWT determines the fetal R-peak envelopes from the residual fECG. The R-peak envelopes are used to analyze FHR, and its accuracy was accessed using the FHR trace. So far, FastICA-AEFLN-NWT has not been used as a hybrid method for fECG extraction and fetal R-peak detection. The algorithm's effectiveness was tested on both real databases from Daisy and Physionet and synthetic databases from Physionet. The proposed hybrid method attains 95.29 % of sensitivity (SE), 96.68 % of Positive Predictive Value (PPV), 95.92 % of F1 score, and FHR measurement (FHRmeas) is 29.72 bpm 2 . The proposed methodology outperforms the state-of-art methods in fECG extraction.

Use of Deep Learning to Detect the Maternal Heart Rate and False Signals on Fetal Heart Rate Recordings

Abstract:We have developed deep learning models for automatic identification of the maternal heart rate (MHR) and, more generally, false signals (FSs) on fetal heart rate (FHR) recordings. The models can be used to preprocess FHR data prior to automated analysis or as a clinical alert system to assist the practitioner. Three models were developed and used to detect (i) FSs on the MHR channel (the FSMHR model), (ii) the MHR and FSs on the Doppler FHR sensor (the FSDop model), and (iii) FSs on the scalp ECG channel (the FSScalp model). The FSDop model was the most useful because FSs are far more frequent on the Doppler FHR channel. All three models were based on a multilayer, symmetric, GRU, and were trained on data recorded during the first and second stages of delivery. The FSMHR and FSDop models were also trained on antepartum recordings. The training dataset contained 1030 expert-annotated periods (mean duration: 36 min) from 635 recordings. In an initial evaluation of routine clinical practice, 30 fully annotated recordings for each sensor type (mean duration: 5 h for MHR and Doppler sensors, and 3 h for the scalp ECG sensor) were analyzed. The sensitivity, positive predictive value (PPV) and accuracy were respectively 62.20%, 87.1% and 99.90% for the FSMHR model, 93.1%, 95.6% and 99.68% for the FSDop model, and 44.6%, 87.2% and 99.93% for the FSScalp model. We built a second test dataset with a more solid ground truth by selecting 45 periods (lasting 20 min, on average) on which the Doppler FHR and scalp ECG signals were recorded simultaneously. Using scalp ECG data, the experts estimated the true FHR value more reliably and thus annotated the Doppler FHR channel more precisely. The models achieved a sensitivity of 53.3%, a PPV of 62.4%, and an accuracy of 97.29%. In comparison, two experts (blinded to the scalp ECG data) respectively achieved a sensitivity of 15.7%, a PPV of 74.3%, and an accuracy of 96.91% and a sensitivity of 60.7%, a PPV of 83.5% and an accuracy of 98.24%. Hence, the models performed at expert level (better than one expert and worse than the other), although a well-trained expert with good knowledge of FSs could probably do better in some cases. The models and datasets have been included in the Fetal Heart Rate Morphological Analysis open-source MATLAB toolbox and can be used freely for research purposes.

Abstract:Non-invasive monitoring of fetal electrocardiogram (fECG) plays an important role in detecting and diagnosing fetal diseases. This study aimed to develop a multi-step method for locating both maternal and fetal QRS complexes from abdominal ECG (aECG) recordings. The proposed method included four major steps: abdominal ECG pre-processing, maternal QRS complex locating, maternal ECG cancellation and fetal QRS complex locating. Signal quality assessment (SQA) and fine-tuning for maternal ECG (FTM) were implemented in the first and third steps, respectively. The method was then evaluated using 75 non-invasive 4-channel aECG recordings provided by the PhysioNet/Computing in Cardiology Challenge 2013. The F1 measure, which is a new index introduced by Behar et al (2013 Proc. Comput. Cardiol. 40 297-300), was used to assess the locating accuracy. The other two indices, mean squared error of heart rate (MSE_HR) between the fetal HR signals estimated from the reference and our method (MSE_HR in bpm(2)) and root mean squared difference between the corresponding fetal RR intervals (MSE_RR in ms) were also used to assess the locating accuracy. Overall, for the maternal QRS complex, the F1 measure was 98.4% from the method without the implementation of SQA, and it was improved to 99.8% with SQA. For the fetal QRS complex, the F1 measure, MSE_HR and MSE_RR were 84.9%, 185.6 bpm(2) and 19.4 ms for the method without both SQA and FTM procedures. They were improved to 93.9%, 47.5 bpm(2) and 7.6 ms with both SQA and FTM procedures. These improvements were observed from each individual subject. It can be concluded that implementing both SQA and FTM procedures could achieve better performance for locating both maternal and fetal QRS complexes.

Abstract:Estimation of the fetal heart rate (FHR) has gained interest in the last century, low heart rate variability has been studied to identify intrauterine growth restricted fetuses (prepartum), and abnormal FHR patterns have been associated with fetal distress during delivery (intrapartum). Several monitoring techniques have been proposed for FHR estimation, including auscultation and Doppler ultrasound. This thesis focuses on the extraction of the non-invasive fetal electrocardiogram (NI-FECG) recorded from a limited set of abdominal sensors. The main challenge with NI-FECG extraction techniques is the low signal-to-noise ratio of the FECG signal on the abdominal mixture signal which consists of a dominant maternal ECG component, FECG and noise. However the NI-FECG offers many advantages over the alternative fetal monitoring techniques, the most important one being the opportunity to enable morphological analysis of the FECG which is vital for determining whether an observed FHR event is normal or pathological. In order to advance the field of NI-FECG signal processing, the development of standardised public databases and benchmarking of a number of published and novel algorithms was necessary.

Abstract:Early detection of potential hazards in the fetal physiological state during pregnancy and childbirth is very important. Noninvasive fetal electrocardiogram (FECG) can be extracted from the maternal abdominal signal. However, due to the interference of maternal electrocardiogram and other noises, the task of extraction is challenging. This paper introduces a novel single-lead noninvasive fetal electrocardiogram extraction method based on the technique of clustering and PCA. The method is divided into four steps: (1) pre-preprocessing; (2) fetal QRS complexes and maternal QRS complexes detection based on k-means clustering algorithm with the feature of max-min pairs; (3) FQRS correction step is to improve the performance of step two; (4) template subtraction based on PCA is introduced to extract FECG waveform. To verify the performance of the proposed algorithm, two clinical open-access databases are used to check the performance of FQRS detection. As a result, the method proposed shows the average PPV of 95.35%, Se of 96.23%, and F1-measure of 95.78%. Furthermore, the robustness test is carried out on an artificial database which proves that the algorithm has certain robustness in various noise environments. Therefore, this method is feasible and reliable to detect fetal heart rate and extract FECG. Abstract:The abdominal electrocardiogram (ECG) provides a non-invasive method for monitoring the fetal cardiac activity in pregnant women. However, the temporal and frequency overlap between the fetal ECG (FECG), the maternal ECG (MECG) and noise results in a challenging source separation problem. This work seeks to compare temporal extraction methods for extracting the fetal signal and estimating fetal heart rate. A novel method for MECG cancelation using an echo state neural network (ESN) based filtering approach was compared with the least mean square (LMS), the recursive least square (RLS) adaptive filter and template subtraction (TS) techniques. Analysis was performed using real signals from two databases composing a total of 4 h 22 min of data from nine pregnant women with 37,452 reference fetal beats. The effects of preprocessing the signals was empirically evaluated. The results demonstrate that the ESN based algorithm performs best on the test data with an F1 measure of 90.2% as compared to the LMS (87.9%), RLS (88.2%) and the TS (89.3%) techniques. Results suggest that a higher baseline wander high pass cut-off frequency than traditionally used for FECG analysis significantly increases performance for all evaluated methods. Open source code for the benchmark methods are made available to allow comparison and reproducibility on the public domain data.

Abstract:We propose a novel algorithm to recover fetal electrocardiogram (ECG) for both the fetal heart rate analysis and morphological analysis of its waveform from two or three trans-abdominal maternal ECG channels. We design an algorithm based on the optimal-shrinkage and the nonlocal Euclidean median under the wave-shape manifold model. For the fetal heart rate analysis, the algorithm is evaluated on publicly available database, 2013 PhyioNet/Computing in Cardiology Challenge, set A. For the morphological analysis, we propose to simulate semi-real databases by mixing the MIT-BIH Normal Sinus Rhythm Database and MITDB Arrhythmia Database. For the fetal R peak detection, the proposed algorithm outperforms all algorithms under comparison. For the morphological analysis, the algorithm provides an encouraging result in recovery of the fetal ECG waveform, including PR, QT and ST intervals, even when the fetus has arrhythmia. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work focusing on recovering the fetal ECG for morphological analysis from two or three channels with an algorithm potentially applicable for continuous fetal electrocardiographic monitoring, which creates the potential for long term monitoring purpose.

Abstract:The multiple fundamental frequency detection problem and the source separation problem from a single-channel signal containing multiple oscillatory components and a nonstationary noise are both challenging tasks. To extract the fetal electrocardiogram (ECG) from a single-lead maternal abdominal ECG, we need to solve both challenges. We propose a novel method to extract the fetal ECG from a single-lead maternal abdominal ECG, without any additional measurement. The algorithm is composed of three components. First, the maternal and fetal heart rates are estimated by the de-shape short time Fourier transform (STFT), which is a recently proposed nonlinear time-frequency analysis technique. The beat tracking technique is the second component which is applied to accurately obtain the maternal and fetal R peaks. The third component consists of establishing the maternal and fetal ECG waveforms by the nonlocal median. The algorithm is tested on two real databases with the annotation provided by experts (adfecgdb database and CinC2013 database) and a simulated database (fecgsym), and provides the state-of-the-art results. We conclude that with the proposed algorithm, the fetal ECG waveform and the fetal heart rate could be accurately obtained from the single-lead maternal abdominal ECG.
