Abstract:The high-quality development of China's green finance is driven by the aims of reaching peak carbon and carbon neutrality, leading to an important impact of emissions trading policies on the profitability and debt burden of China's listed companies. This paper uses propensity score matching (PSM) and the difference in differences (DID) method to study the impact of carbon emissions trading policies on the profitability and debt burden of listed companies in seven carbon emissions trading pilots from 2010 to 2019. The empirical evidence shows that the implementation of carbon emissions trading policies has increased the profitability and reduced the debt burden of listed companies: (1) Mechanism test shows that this policy can increase the profitability and debt burden of state-owned listed companies by increasing innovation investment. (2) The negative effects of this policy on the profitability and debt burden of state-owned listed companies are more obvious than that of the others. (3) The policy has also significantly reduced the debt burden of competitive companies and the profitability of monopolies. (4) The policy yields a more intense reduction in the debt burden of listed companies in high-carbon emission industries. Finally, this paper suggests that listed companies' participation in the carbon emissions trading policy be expanded and that monopoly conditions among listed companies are reduced.

A Study on the Impact of Pilot Carbon Emission Trading Policies on Corporate Performance

Abstract:This paper uses the carbon emission trading policy as a quasi-natural experiment to comprehensively investigate its impact on the financial and market performance of firms. The study uses data from A-share listed companies for the period from 2009 to 2022 and adopts the difference-in-differences model for a rigorous analysis. The mediating effect of financing constraints and the moderating role of managerial capabilities are examined with respect to the influencing mechanisms; heterogeneity was also analyzed in terms of carbon allowance allocation methods, carbon prices, environmental enforcement efforts, and type of industry. The results of the study show that the carbon trading policy has a significant effect on improving the financial performance of firms, while also inhibiting their market performance. The feasibility of the findings was further validated after conducting robustness tests such as propensity score matching and placebo tests. The mechanism analysis finds that financing constraints play a masking effect on the impact of carbon trading policies on firms' financial performance; managerial competence can positively moderate firms' market performance. Heterogeneity analysis shows that the inhibitory effect of emissions trading policies on market performance is more significant for firms in regions with a smaller share of free allowances. For companies in high carbon price regions, carbon trading policies have a more significant impact on financial performance. For companies located in regions with higher levels of environmental enforcement, the positive effect of carbon trading policies on financial performance is unchanged, but the dampening effect on market performance is more significant. Carbon trading policies have a stronger positive effect on the financial performance of high-polluting firms, but a more significant dampening effect on the market performance of low-polluting firms. The findings of this study enhance China's research framework on the economic impacts of carbon trading policies on micro-enterprises, promoting sustainable business development and serving as a useful reference for policy sustainability.

Abstract:The carbon emission trading system profoundly impacts enterprises' sustainable development as an important market incentive environmental regulation tool. Through data collected from Chinese A-share listed enterprises in Shanghai and Shenzhen from 2011 to 2019 and Bloomberg ESG score data, this paper empirically analyses the impact of carbon emission trading policy on enterprise ESG performance and its channel mechanism using the difference-in-difference (DID) method. Results of this study indicate that carbon emission trading policy improves enterprise ESG performance significantly, and robustness tests confirm these findings. Carbon emission trading policy can encourage enterprises to enhance their R&D investments and promote internal controls, ultimately enhancing their ESG performance. Additionally, carbon emission trading policy positively impacts ESG performance in low-carbon enterprises, enterprises where the CEO is separated from the company, enterprises with a high degree of digital transformation, and enterprises receiving high government subsidies. This paper extends our research into the economic implications of carbon emission trading policy, enriching the literature on market-based environmental regulation policies' impact on enterprise ESG performance. With respect to governments' use of carbon emission trading to regulate enterprises environmentally, this paper provides theoretical guidance. It has significant practical implications for improving enterprise ESG performance and sustainability.

Abstract:Isocyanates have been a leading chemical cause of occupational asthma since their utility for generating polyurethane was first recognized over 60 years ago, yet the mechanisms of isocyanate asthma pathogenesis remain unclear. The present study provides in vivo evidence that a GSH mediated pathway underlies asthma-like eosinophilic inflammatory responses to respiratory tract isocyanate exposure. In naïve mice, a mixture of GSH reaction products with the chemical allergen, methylene-diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI), induced innate immune responses, characterized by significantly increased airway levels of Chitinase YM-1 and IL-12/IL-23β (but not α) subunit. However, in mice immunologically sensitized to MDI via prior skin exposure, identical GSH-MDI doses induced substantially greater inflammatory responses, including significantly increased airway eosinophil numbers and mucus production, along with IL-12/IL-23β, chitinases, and other indicators of alternative macrophage activation. The "self"-protein albumin in mouse airway fluid was uniquely modified by GSH-MDI at position (414)K, a preferred site of MDI reactivity on human albumin. The (414)K-MDI conjugation appears to covalently cross-link GSH to albumin via GSH's NH2-terminus, a unique conformation possibly resulting from cyclized mono(GSH)-MDI or asymmetric (S,N'-linked) bis(GSH)-MDI conjugates. Together, the data support a possible thiol mediated transcarbamoylating mechanism linking MDI exposure to pathogenic eosinophilic inflammatory responses.

Abstract:The carbon emission trading system, as a significant policy instrument to ensure the Chinese economy achieves a green and low carbon transition, will also affect economic enterprise efficiency. This paper takes listed enterprises in a Chinese carbon trading pilot from 2011 to 2020 as research samples, constructs a multi-period differential model, and explores the impact of Chinese the carbon emission trading system on enterprise capital allocation efficiency. We find that the Chinese carbon emission trading system effectively improves the capital allocation efficiency of enterprises, which is more significant in enterprises with light pollution intensity and strong regional environmental regulation. Further analysis shows that the carbon emission trading system can improve the efficiency of enterprise capital allocation by improving the efficiency of working capital management and asset operation efficiency, while the path of human capital value is not established. Carbon trading market activity and government efficiency play a positive moderating role in the impact of the carbon emission trading system on enterprise capital allocation efficiency. The higher carbon trading market activity and government efficiency, the stronger the relationship between them. The above conclusions provide empirical evidence for the microeconomic effects of the Chinese carbon emission trading system, and also provide a useful reference for the government to implement carbon trading according to local conditions and improve the efficiency of enterprise capital allocation.

Abstract:Taking China's emissions trading system (ETS) pilots as a quasi-natural experiment, we examine how the ETS affects firms' financial performance. Previous studies highlight the impact of ETS on regional and industrial development; however, few studies focus on its potential impact on firms' performance. Using a time-varying difference-in-differences model and data on Chinese listed firms from 2008 to 2020, we find that the ETS pilots have significantly positive impacts on firms' profitability and value and a negative impact on operating costs. We also find that the ETS pilots improve total factor productivity, but the technological changes indirectly suppress the relation between the ETS and financial performance. Finally, we find evidence that state-owned enterprises experience more significant improvements in their financial performance, led by ETS participation. Our findings have policy implications for firms' sustainable development and the transition to a low-carbon economy.

Abstract:The carbon emission trading scheme influences firms' operation costs, which may induce resource diversion to financial investments. By using a sample of Chinese A-share non-financial listed firms that are subject to carbon emission trading pilot programs in China, this paper employs a differences-in-differences analysis to test the impact of carbon emission trading on firms' financial asset allocation. We find that carbon emission trading significantly increases corporate financialization, especially long-term financial assets. The effect is stronger in firms with stronger profit-seeking incentives and weaker governance, suggesting the mechanism of capital profit-seeking and management opportunism under increased operation costs and risk. Further heterogeneity analysis indicates that the positive association between carbon emission trading and corporate financialization is more pronounced in non-state-owned enterprises, carbon-intensive firms, and firms in regions with developed financial markets or more volatile carbon markets.

Abstract:Using a carbon emission trading pilot policy in China, we construct a DID method to investigate the effect of carbon emission trading on corporate financial behaviour. We find that enterprises in the pilot areas get less bank loans after the 'pilot policy', which indicates that carbon emissions trading has a negative impact on debt financing. Additional analysis shows that the negative influence is more significant in state-owned enterprises. Our study provides a more complete picture of the microeconomic impact of carbon emissions trading, and improves our understanding of the role and significance of corporate 'carbon assets' in the capital market.

Abstract:The study focuses on A-share listed companies in China from 2009 to 2022, employing a difference-in-difference-in-differences (DDD) model across multiple time points to systematically assess the impact and corrective effects of carbon finance on strategic ESG behaviors. The research reveals several key findings. Firstly, the implementation of carbon emissions trading policy significantly corrects strategic environmental, social, and governance (ESG) behaviors of enterprises. Notably, compared to mitigating ESG "greenwashing," these policies effectively reduce the phenomenon of "brownwashing." Secondly, from a financial perspective, carbon finance influences strategic ESG behaviors through three primary mechanisms: financing effect, resource allocation effect, and green innovation effect. Thirdly, the study identifies that the suppressive impact of carbon emissions trading policy on strategic ESG behaviors is more pronounced among non-state-owned enterprises, companies with higher capital market and environmental attention, robust corporate governance and those operating in regions with developed factor markets and less government economic intervention. Examining how carbon emission trading leverages market mechanisms to rectify strategic ESG behaviors provides valuable insights for carbon finance theory. Moreover, these findings hold significant implications for policymakers aiming to strengthen carbon trading platforms, enhance carbon finance systems, and refine ESG information disclosure frameworks.

Abstract:The carbon emissions trading (CET) policy internalises the cost of carbon emission reductions borne by companies, which will affect the companies' investment and management decisions. From a micro perspective, this paper analyzes the impact on company investment expenditure and its transmission mechanism by implementing the CET policy. Based on panel data of China's A-share listed companies from eight carbon-intensive industries spanning 2010 to 2020, the time-varying difference-in-difference model and its extended model are used to evaluate the impact of the policy in the pilot areas. The results show that: first, based on the cost effect and legality theories, CET policy can reduce the investment expenditure of the companies by 71.95%. Second, CET policy reduces corporate investment expenditures by increasing corporate debt financing costs. When debt financing costs increase by 120.25%, the investment expenditures will reduce by 2.56% indirectly while the intermediary effect of equity financing costs is not significant. Finally, with the implementation of CET policy, the inhibitory effect on corporate investment expenditures has gradually increased. CET policy has a more significant inhibitory effect on investment expenditures of nonstate-owned companies and small-scale companies. The results have passed the robustness test and provide evidence for the policy-maker to balance microeconomic entity development and carbon reduction, and for companies to make optimization investment and financing decisions in response to policy shocks effectively.

Abstract:Salvinorin A (1) is a hallucinogenic neoclerodane diterpene isolated from the widely available psychoactive plant Salvia divinorum and is the first example of a non-nitrogenous opioid receptor ligand. At present, there is little information available as to why this compound is selective for kappa opioid receptors. One approach to better understanding the mode of binding of 1 at kappa receptors is to systematically alter the structure of 1 and examine the effects on opioid receptor affinity and activity. Currently, there is a paucity of methods described for the preparation of analogues derived from 1. Here, we report the investigation of several chemical transformations of 1 isolated from S. divinorum. In particular, this work provides a semisynthesis of salvinicins A (2) and B (3) and has identified 10a as the first neoclerodane diterpene with delta opioid antagonist activity.
The Impact of Environmental Information Disclosure in the "Carbon Trading Pilot" Project on the Financial Performance of Listed Enterprises in China

Abstract:Environmental policy has long been regarded as the key to achieving sustainable growth goals. Because China is one of the most energy-consuming and carbon-emitting countries globally, its carbon reduction actions have received worldwide attention. This study aims to simultaneously focus on the impact of environmental disclosure and the level of environmental disclosure on enterprise performance. Thus, we use China's 2013 "Carbon Trading Pilot" policy as an exogenous shock and adopt the DID (difference-in-differences) method to examine the impacts of policy-related disclosure and the disclosure level on the financial performance of listed enterprises from 2009 to 2020. The results are as follows: (1) The "Carbon Trading Pilot" policy-related environmental disclosure negatively affects enterprise financial performance; however, the environmental disclosure level is positively correlated with enterprise financial performance, and both impacts are heterogeneous. (2) The impact of the "Carbon Trading Pilot" project-related environmental disclosure level on enterprise financial performance has a threshold effect, where its impact is enhanced when the environmental disclosure index reaches 10.074. (3) Further exploration of mechanisms reveals that total liabilities play an action mechanism role in the above two relationships. Studying the impact of environmental policies on enterprise financial performance is of paramount significance for economic sustainability.

Abstract:The economic consequences of environmental regulations remain controversial. This study examines the impact of carbon emissions trading on enterprises' investment efficiency. The results show that carbon emissions trading restrains over-investment and promotes the investment efficiency of enterprises. Additionally, this relationship is more significant in enterprises in higher levels of corporate governance and state-owned enterprises. This study enriches the literature on emissions trading systems from the perspective of micro resource allocation efficiency, enriches the application of the Porter hypothesis, and expands the relevant research on the factors affecting enterprise investment efficiency. Moreover, the results have important practical significance for governments implementing carbon emission reduction policies and enterprises participating in carbon emissions trading.

Abstract:Using archival data of the Chinese A-share listed companies from 2011 to 2019, this article empirically examines the effectiveness of the Chinese carbon emission trading pilot, from the perspective of market-ranked corporate environmental performance. The main findings demonstrate that compared with companies not selected in the pilot, regulated enterprises tend to create a better environmental performance after the implementation of the pilot. Second, regarding the two possible influential channels, the lowering production level channel is empirically supported, while the increasing green investment channel lacks salient explanatory power. Finally, greater environmental pressures and better internal control quality present synergistic effects in amplifying the positive connection between the pilot and corporate environmental performance. Our conclusions remain valid under various robustness test methods. Potential related directions for future research are also identified and suggested in this article. Overall, using the Chinese carbon emission trading pilot as a research setting, our study provides additional evidence on whether and how environmental regulations affect corporate environmental performance ranked by capital market participants.

Abstract:By treating the implementation of China's carbon trading policy as a quasi-natural experiment, the study analyzes data from A-share listed companies on China's Shanghai and Shenzhen exchanges between 2010 and 2023. Utilizing a multi-temporal Difference-in-Differences (DID) model, multiple intermediary effect model, moderation effect model and threshold effect model, we probe to verifies whether carbon trading policy can generate innovation incentive effects and investigate the transmission mechanisms. Empirical results show that carbon trading policy are beneficial for the green technology upgrading of enterprises and that this incentivizing effect is persistent. Mechanism analysis reveals that the mediating variables of financing constraints and R&D investment exhibit a chain mediation effect and nonlinear characteristics. Once the thresholds of financing constraints and R&D investment are surpassed, the green innovation effect of carbon trading policy is significantly enhanced. Digital finance has a moderating effect on the chain-multiple mediation transmission mechanism. Heterogeneity analysis indicates that the chain mediation effect is mainly observed in large-scale enterprises and enterprises in central regions. This paper offers theoretical support for evaluating carbon trading policy based on the micro-enterprise level and provides a scientific basis for how to efficiently play the function of carbon trading policy in practice, which helps to enhance the carbon trading policy and is of great practical significance for improving the operational efficiency of the national carbon trading market.

Abstract:Purpose: Low-carbon and green technologies are crucial for achieving industrial structure upgrades and significant leaps forward in the development of energy enterprises. Therefore, this paper examines the correlation between carbon emission reduction and financial performance in energy firms. Design/Methodology/Approach: A two-way fixed-effects model is developed using data from 33 Chinese energy-listed companies between 2015 and 2020. Findings: The benchmark regression results show that improving a company's carbon emission reduction performance leads to better financial performance. Moreover, assuming corporate responsibility for reducing emissions can boost companies' reputations and foster better relationships with stakeholders. The trustworthiness of the standard regression outcome is validated through alternative independent variables, reducing time frames, and incorporating previously omitted factors. The results of heterogeneity analyses show that reducing carbon emissions has the same effect on financial performance across all regional characteristics and equity subgroups. Furthermore, the internal transmission mechanism analysis reveals that female leadership positively moderates the effect, while financing constraints negatively moderate the relationship between carbon emission reduction performance and financial performance. Conclusion: Under the national green development strategy of achieving carbon neutrality and carbon peaking, the carbon information disclosure system should be improved by the government; enterprises should implement innovative methods for low-carbon economic management and operation; and regulators should establish effective green regulations, incentives, and constraints. This paper offers a comprehensive guide for energy companies and their stakeholders to reduce carbon emissions, thereby achieving sustainability.

Abstract:China proposed establishing a carbon emission trading market in its 12th Five-Year Plan to reduce carbon dioxide emissions through market mechanisms, promote the development of science and technology and help China become an environment-friendly country. To examine the impact of carbon emission trading on green technology innovation in Chinese energy enterprises, data from 1993 to 2020 were collected from 494 A-share-listed energy enterprises. Enterprises located in the pilot area of carbon emissions trading were assigned to the treatment group, while those in the non-pilot area were assigned to the control group. The propensity-score-matching method was utilized to match the treatment group with the control group, and the resulting samples were used as the actual sample data. The difference-in-differences method was then employed to assess the net impact of carbon emission trading and investigate its effect on green technology innovation in energy enterprises. This empirical study suggested that carbon emission trading has a positive impact on green technology innovation in energy enterprises, particularly state-owned ones. Larger enterprises are more willing to engage in green technological innovation than small enterprises. Furthermore, when faced with a carbon emission trading system, 'mature' companies tend to pay more attention to green technology innovation than younger enterprises do. This study puts forward policy measures for establishing a national-level carbon emission market in China in the future.

Abstract:In September 2011, the General Office of China’s National Development and Reform Commission issued the Notice on the Pilot Project of Carbon Emissions Trading. Over the past decade, the carbon emission trading system (ETS) has gradually developed in China. Based on a quasi-natural experiment of China’s carbon emission trading market pilot program, a PSM-DDD model is used to test the impact of the policy on the EPS of listed companies which is classified as key GHG emitters in the pilot region from 2009 to 2014, accurately evaluate the impact of the ETS policy, and compares it with the DID method. The empirical results show that the carbon trading pilot policy reduces the EPS of firms, which is due to the higher cost of meeting the emission reduction obligations and the purchase of carbon allowances.

Abstract:The implementation of market-based climate policies represented by the emission trading system (ETS) is an important path for countries to participate in global climate governance and achieve the goals of carbon emission peaking and carbon neutrality. Whether the covered firms can improve financial performance through bearing responsibility for cutting emissions, a “win-win” of environmental and economic achievement, is an important way to evaluate the effectiveness of ETS. Based on the Chinese A-share listed firms in industrial sector during the period of 2010–2017, this paper employs PSM-DID method to investigate the impact of China's pilot ETS on financial performance of the covered firms. The results show that the covered firm's financial performance is improved by the implementation of pilot ETS, which can increase firm's ROA by 0.01 unit. Specifically, the pilot ETS can significantly improve the financial performance of non-state-owned firms, without affecting state-owned firms. Similarly, the financial performance improvement is more significant for firms in non-energy industries. Furthermore, the pilot ETS can motivate the covered firms to gain financial profit through cutting carbon emission as a mediation path, and the mediation effect size of carbon emission intensity is 0.001. Besides, firm's innovation ability weakens this mediation path, and the well-developed institutions in pilot area, proxied by high degree of marketization, only weaken the first part of the path, namely, carbon emission reduction led by ETS.

Abstract:China's economic growth has entered "new normal," and the task of reducing carbon emissions has become more onerous. Hence, this study aimed to explore whether China's carbon emissions trading pilot policy stimulated corporate green innovation capabilities. The data pertained to the green patent data of the listed companies in Shanghai and Shenzhen stock exchanges during 2008–2018. Using a difference-in-difference-in-differences (DDD) method, the study took advantage of the variations across regions, across enterprises, and across years and obtained several novel findings. First, the pilot carbon emissions trading policy significantly stimulated the green innovation capabilities of emission control companies in the pilot areas compared with enterprises in nonpilot areas and the nonemission control list. Second, the effect of the policy on the improvement in corporate green innovation capabilities might be driven by the improvement in corporate input factor allocation efficiency and the additional benefits that could be obtained from the carbon trading market. Third, the positive effect of the policy on the green innovation capabilities of state-owned enterprises was more significant. Therefore, the establishment and promotion of a unified national carbon emissions trading market and supporting mechanisms should be accelerated to achieve the balance of stable economic growth and carbon emission task.
