Abstract:To investigate absorption and accumulation characteristics of plants to soil mercury, plants and corresponding soils were collected from some pollution sites in Huainan mining area. The mercury contents in soils and different parts of plant (stem-leaf and root) were analyzed with atomic fluorescence spectrometer. The results show that the mean contents of soil mercury in different sampling sites ranged from 0.089 to 0.184mg/kg, which was several times of the Soil Background Value of China and Huainan. But most soil samples belong to the secondary standard, according to GB15618-1995. The mean contents of stem-leaf and root mercury ranged from 0.029 to 0.271mg/kg and from 0.056 to 0.191mg/kg, respectively. The bioaccumulation factor of stem-leaf and root ranged from 0.411 to 1.380 and from 0.528 to 1.303, respectively. Some plant species have a strong ability to accumulate more mercury, such as Annual fleabane, Wild artemisia and Geranium, which can be considered as hyper-accumulator plant species in the remediation of soil mercury pollution. © 2011 IEEE.

Abstract:Cotton is a potential and excellent candidate to balance both agricultural production and remediation of mercury-contained soil, as its main production fiber hardly involves into food chains. However, in cotton, there is known rarely about the tolerance and response to mercury (Hg) environments. In this study, the biochemical and physiological damages, in response to Hg concentrations (0, 1, 10, 50 and 100 mu M), were investigated in upland cotton seedlings. The results on germination of cottonseeds indicated the germination rates were suppressed by high Hg levels, as the decrease of percentage was more than 10% at 1000 mu M Hg. Shoots and roots' growth were significantly inhibited over 10 mu M Hg. The inhibitor rates (IR) in fresh weight were close in values between shoots and roots, whereas those in dry weight the root growth were more obviously influenced by Hg. In comparison of organs, the growth inhibition ranked as root > leaf > stem. The declining of translocation factor (TF) opposed the Hg level as even low to 0.05 at 50 mu M Hg. The assimilation in terms of photosynthesis, of cotton plants, was affected negatively by Hg, as evidenced from the performances on pigments (chlorophyll a and b) and gas exchange (Intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci), CO2 assimilation rate (Pn) and stomatal conductance (Gs)). Sick phenotypes on leaf surface included small white zone, shrinking and necrosis. Membrane lipid peroxidation and leakage were Hg dose-dependent as indicated by malondialdehyde (MDA) content and relative conductivity (RC) values in leaves and roots. More than 10 mu M Hg damaged antioxidant enzyme system in both leaves and roots (p < 0.05). Concludingly, 10 mu M Hg post negative consequences to upland cotton plants in growth, physiology and biochemistry, whereas high phytotoxicity and damage appeared at more than 50 mu M Hg concentration.

Abstract:To investigate effects of Zn on Cd uptake by spring wheat (Triticum aestivum, L.) in solution culture, long-time hydroponic experiment (1 month) (Experiment 1) and short-time Cd isotope (109Cd) tracing experiment (24 h) (Experiment 2) were conducted. In Experiment 1, spring wheat (cv. Brookton) was grown in nutrient solution at uniform cadmium concentration of 20 μmol/L and 10 zinc concentrations (0, 1, 5, 10, 20, 100, 200, 500, 1000, 2000 μmol/L). In Experiment 2, spring wheat seedlings, pre-cultivated in complete nutrient solution, were treated with109Cd of uniform activity and the same series of Zn concentrations as those in Experiment 1 for 24 h. Cd concentrations in shoots and roots in Experiment 1 increased marginally but not consistently with Zn increasing at Zn rates of 1≈200 μmol/L, and then decreased significantly at high rates (>200 μmol/L). In Experiment 2, the response of109Cd activities in shoots and roots to increasing Zn was greatly similar to the response of Cd concentrations to Zn increasing in Experiment 1. The results of the two experiments indicated that the short-time and long-time exposure of spring wheat to Zn had similar effects on Cd accumulation.
Isotopic and Spectroscopic Investigation of Mercury Accumulation in Houttuynia cordata Colonizing Historically Contaminated Soil

Abstract:Houttuynia cordata Thunb (H. cordata) is a native vegetable colonizing mercury (Hg) mining sites in the southwest of China; it can accumulate high Hg concentrations in the rhizomes and roots (edible sections), and thus consumption of H. cordata represents an important Hg exposure source to human. Here, we studied the spatial distribution, chemical speciation, and stable isotope compositions of Hg in the soil-H. cordata system at the Wuchuan Hg mining region in China, aiming to provide essential knowledge for assessing Hg risks and managing the transfer of Hg from soils to plants and agricultural systems. Mercury was mainly compartmentalized in the outlayer (periderm) of the underground tissues, with little Hg being translocated to the vascular bundle of the stem. Mercury presented as Hg-thiolates (94% ± 8%), with minor fractional amount of nanoparticulate β-HgS (β-HgSNP, 15% ± 4%), in the roots and rhizomes. Analysis of Hg stable isotope ratios showed that cysteine-extractable soil Hg pool (δ202Hgcys), root and rhizome Hg (δ202Hgroot, δ202Hgrhizome) were isotopically lighter than Hg in the bulk soils. A significant positive correlation between δ202Hgcys and δ202Hgroot was observed, suggesting that cysteine-extractable soil Hg pool was an important Hg source to H. cordata. The slightly positive Δ199Hg value in the plant (Δ199Hgroot = 0.07 ± 0.07‰, 2SD, n = 21; Δ199Hgrhizome = 0.06 ± 0.06‰, 2SD, n = 22) indicated that minor Hg was sourced from the surface water. Our results are important to assess the risks of Hg in H. cordata, and to develop sustainable methods to manage the transfer of Hg from soils to agricultural systems.

Abstract:Commonly used equilibrium models for metal biouptake, such as the Free Ion Activity Model (FIAM) and the Biotic Ligand Model (BLM), are limited to the cases in which mass diffusive transport is not the flux-determining step. In analyses of metal biouptake from a complexing medium, all the physical (diffusion), chemical (dissociation kinetics of metal complexes), and biological (transport and internalization) processes have to be taken into account. A short-term zinc uptake by wheat ( Triticum aestivum ) roots from culture solutions in the absence or presence of synthetic ligands (NTA, nitrilotriacetic acid, and EDTA, ethylenediaminetetraacetate) was studied. At the same free Zn 2+ concentration ( {Zn^2 + } = 1.5 × 10^ - 8M) , the uptake of Zn was significantly enhanced in the presence of ligands and was larger when Zn complexes have a quicker dissociation rate. The diffusional fluxes in the same culture solution were determined with the differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV) method, and the diffusive gels in thin film (DGT) technique. The contribution from Zn complexes to root Zn uptake was in better agreement with the degree of Zn complex labilities measured with DPASV than with DGT. The diffusion of free Zn 2+ ion to the root surface is a rate-controlling step for Zinc biouptake when the free Zn 2+ concentration is low. Based on the comprehensive consideration of the diffusion and dissociation processes of Zn 2+ ion and Zn complexes and the existence of high- and low-affinity uptake systems in the root surface, a two-pathway Zn uptake model was developed to predict the resulting Zn uptake fluxes into roots in the overall range of exposure.

Abstract:Cadmium (Cd) contamination is a big challenge for managing food supply and safety around the world. Reduction of the bioaccumulation of cadmium (Cd) in wheat is an important way to minimize Cd hazards to human health. This study compared and highlighted the effects of soil and foliar applications of Zn on Cd accumulation and toxicity in cultivars with high Cd accumulation (high-Cd wheat) and low Cd accumulation (low-Cd wheat). Both foliar and soil Zn applications provided effective strategies for reducing wheat grain Cd concentrations in the high-Cd wheat by 26-49% and 25-52%, respectively, and these also significantly reduced the concentrations in wheat stems and leaves. Foliar and soil Zn applications significantly reduced Cd in leaves and stems of the low-Cd wheat but had no effects on grain Cd. Both soil and foliar Zn applications significantly alleviated Cd toxicity by regulation of Cd transport genes, as reflected by the increased grain yield and antioxidant enzyme activity in the wheat tissues. Gene expression in response to zinc application differed in the two wheat cultivars. Down-regulation of the influx transporter (TaNramp5) and upregulation of the efflux transporters (TaTM20 and TaHMA3) in the high-Cd wheat may have contributed to the Zn-dependent Cd alleviation and enhanced its tolerance to Cd toxicity. Additionally, foliar Zn applications down-regulated the leaf TaHMA2 expression that reduced root Cd translocation to shoots, while soil Zn applications down-regulated the root TaLCT1 expression, which contributed to the reduction of root Cd concentrations. Soil (99 kg ZnSO4 center dot 7H(2)O ha(-1)) and foliar (0.36 kg ZnSO4 center dot 7H(2)O ha(-1)) Zn applications can effectively decrease the Cd in grains and guarantee food safety and yield, simultaneously. Abstract:Abstract Background and Aims: Zinc (Zn) is an essential micronutrient for plant growth, and excessive Zn in the soil can inhibit normal plant growth, adversely affecting plant health. Sedum alfredii Hance, a native Zn/Cd hyperaccumulator plant species in China, has strong tolerance and ability to accumulate heavy metals. Previous studies have reported that Zn may have a positive effect on S. alfredii growth, rather than causing toxicity. Thus, exploring the growth-promoting mechanisms of high Zn concentrations on S. alfredii may provide a theoretical reference for phytoremediation technologies. Methods: In this study, the hyperaccumulating ecotype (HE) and non-hyperaccumulating ecotype (NHE) of S. alfredii as research subjects, we used metabolomics, metabolomics, and transcriptomics techniques to explore. Results: At 250 μM Zn, HE root biomass and Zn concentration in roots increased, while being reduced in NHE. Nano-XRF analysis showed that Zn was located in the cortical intercellular space in HE roots, whereas Zn was scattered in the root cells in NHE. The content of auxin in HE roots was increased by 1.26 times and the auxin oxidase activity decreased by 2.94 times after exposure to 100 μM Zn for 12 h, while NHE exhibited the opposite trend. Transcriptomic results showed that HE up-regulated genes were related to carbohydrate metabolism, nitrogen metabolism, carbon fixation, and tryptophan biosynthesis; down-regulated genes were related to lipid metabolism and linoleic acid metabolism. Conclusion: We further screened key gene resources, laying a foundation for the molecular mechanism underlying the positive effect of high Zn concentration on HE growth.
The mechanisms of iron modified montmorillonite in controlling mercury release across mercury-contaminated soil-air interface in greenhouse

Abstract:Montmorillonite was modified with iron (Fe-MMT) for controlling mercury release across mercury-contaminated soil-air interface in greenhouse. With addition of Fe-MMT, although the root Hg contents in Brassica Pekinensis increased, the edible part (leaf) Hg concentrations decreased significantly, even achieved the Tolerance Limit of Mercury in Foods. The decrease of leaf Hg concentrations was attributed to the lower atmospheric Hg concentrations, which is caused by the lower soil Hg0 release fluxes. Besides the Fe-MMT can direct adsorb soil Hg0, it can also immobilize ionic Hg and decrease soil Hg reactivity via surface adsorption, chemical complexation, and situ co-precipitation. Then the contents of leachable Hg and the percentages of bioavailable speciation in soil were reduced, resulting in the soil Hg0 generation was inhibited and soil Hg0 release fluxes declined. Applying Fe-MMT to soil enhanced the diversity indexes of Streptomyces, which could promote the oxidation of soil Hg0 to Hg2+; subsequently, the soil Hg0 release fluxes decreased. After amending with Fe-MMT, the root Hg contents in Brassica Pekinensis increased because both the soil Hg and microorganisms loaded Hg could be adsorbed by iron oxides and retained on the root surface. This work can provide research basis for Fe-MMT application in Hg-contaminated soil in greenhouse.

Interactive Effects of Mercury and Arsenic on Their Uptake, Speciation and Toxicity in Rice Seedling

Abstract:Rice can take up and translocate more As and Hg than other cereal crops. A hydroponic experiment was conducted to investigate their interactive effects on their uptake and toxicity in rice seedling after exposing to As(III) (0.1, 0.5 or 2.5 mg L−1) and Hg (0.05, 0.25 or 1.25 mg L−1) for 14 d. Rice was much more effective in taking up Hg than As and sequestered both in the roots. As and Hg reached 339 and 433 mg kg−1 in the roots, and 48.5 and 16.1 mg kg−1 in the shoots at As2.5 + Hg1.25. Though Hg inhibited As uptake and translocation, it enhanced As(III) toxicity to rice seedling. However, As inhibited Hg uptake at Hg0.05, but the opposite was observed at Hg0.25 and Hg1.25. Arsenite (54–100%) and inorganic Hg (100%) were the predominant form in the plant based on speciation analysis via HPLC–ICP–MS. Malondialdehyde in the roots and shoots increased with increasing As and Hg concentrations, with the highest being 54 μmol g−1 at As0.5 + Hg1.25 in the roots. Root cell structural damage and organelles number reduction with increasing As and Hg concentration were observed based on TEM. As and Hg transformation and toxicity can help to understand the metabolic mechanisms of As and Hg in rice plant when co-present.
Effects of mercury stress on methylmercury production in rice rhizosphere, methylmercury uptake in rice and physiological changes of leaves

Abstract:Methylmercury (MeHg) in rice is presumed to be derived from MeHg formed in the soil, although it is still controversial. Moderate soil mercury (Hg) concentration can affect the diversity of soil microorganisms and may also impact the physiological changes and MeHg absorption of rice. In this study, the pot experiment was conducted to explore the effects of Hg concentration gradients (0, 0.3, 3, and 30 mg kg-1) stress on Hg transformation in the rhizosphere, Hg translocation in rice, and physiological changes in rice leaves during the whole rice growing season. Moderate soil Hg concentration (3 mg kg-1) greatly increased the MeHg/THg (1.69%) of rhizosphere, while 30 mg kg-1 soil Hg concentration sharply reduced the MeHg/THg (0.29%) of rhizosphere. Highest MeHg/THg of the four groups all appeared at the blooming or filling stage. There was a significant positive correlation between Fe2+ in rhizosphere and MeHg/THg, but no significant correlation between SO42- and MeHg/THg was observed. Although the 3 mg kg-1 soil Hg concentration significantly enhanced MeHg concentrations in seeds, it considerably reduced the bioaccumulation factors of MeHg in roots, stalks, old leaves and young leaves. Soil Hg concentration of 30 mg kg-1, to a certain extent, curtailed MeHg concentrations in seeds, while MeHg concentrations in the husk were significantly increased. Consistent with the result that there was no significant difference for THg concentrations in old and young leaves among the four Hg treatment groups, the content of chlorophyll, H2O2, malondialdehyde and antioxidant substances, and the activities of antioxidant enzyme in old and young leaves varied indistinctly among groups. MAIN FINDING: Moderate soil mercury concentration (3 mg kg-1) could extremely enhance MeHg production in the rhizosphere soil and its accumulation in rice; MeHg production in the rhizosphere soil increased greatly at the blooming or filling stage, whereas little effect on antioxidant systems in leaves was observed.

Abstract:Pot experiments were carried out with cabbage(Brassica.campestrisssp.chinensis L.) to study the effects of mercury(Hg) on their physiological indices and qualities,such as biomass,chlorophyll(chl) content,Hg accumulation in edible part of cabbage,and contents of soluble sugar,vitamine C(Vc) and cellulose.Hg was applied as mercury chloride at eight different levels in two different soils.The results showed that the cabbage biomass and chlorophyll increase in soil 1 other than in soil 2.Hg content in the cabbage shoots has significant relationships with contents of total and available Hg in soils,but the relationships were not only linear.Furthermore,soluble sugar content shows a positive correlation with three forms of Hg in both soils,but Vc showed a negative correlation,indicating that cabbages are encountering adversity stress.So soluble sugar and Vc can be considered as indicators to Hg contamination in soil-Hg-cabbage system.

Abstract:Heavy metal stress in culture media is always rhizotoxic. Our study aims to investigate the role of negative potential ( ψ 0 ) at root cell membrane surface (CMs) on modeling Zn 2+ toxicity to wheat seedling roots and to examine the effects of different nitrogen forms (NH 4 + and NO 3 − ) on ψ 0 and Zn rhizotoxicity. Solution culture experiments were conducted to measure the root elongation and Zn accumulation under Zn 2+ exposure. The role of two nitrogen forms in affecting Zn 2+ toxicity was compared, giving particular consideration to ψ 0 and Zn 2+ activities at CMs ({Zn 2+ } 0 ). Results showed that NH 4 + alleviates Zn 2+ rhizotoxicity and NO 3 − increases Zn 2+ rhizotoxicity. In modeling the rhizotoxicity, root length correlated better with {Zn 2+ } 0 than {Zn 2+ } b , and the predictive accuracy ( r 2 ) of NH 4 + treatment increased from 0.748 to 0.917 when incorporation of {Zn 2+ } 0 and {Ca 2+ } 0 into analysis. Oppositely, ψ 0 played a limited role in modeling Zn 2+ rhizotoxicity and bioavailability in NO 3 − treated medium ( r 2 = 0.609). Moreover, higher concentration of Zn in roots was found in NO 3 − treatment, compared with the NH 4 + treatment. ψ 0 rather than the rhizotoxicity data correlated better with Zn accumulation especially in the NO 3 − treatment ( r 2 > 0.7), which meant the electrical driving force at CMs playing a dominant role in modeling the metal accumulation. In conclusion, the alleviatory role of NH 4 + on Zn toxicity and uptake was well explained and modeled by electrostatic effects at CMs. Though our data do not explore mechanisms for the NO 3 − -Zn 2+ interactions, we propose that ψ 0 worked better in affecting the driving force for root Zn uptake, than influencing metal bioavailability at CMs.
Zinc Enhances Cadmium Accumulation in Shoots of Hyperaccumulator Solanum nigrum by Improving ATP-Dependent Transport and Alleviating Toxicity

Abstract:Solanum nigrum is a cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) accumulator with potential for phytoextraction of soil contaminated with heavy metals. However, how Zn affects Cd accumulation in S. nigrum remains unclear. In this study, S. nigrum seedlings were treated with 100 μmol·L-1 Zn (Zn100), 100 μmol·L-1 Cd (Cd100), and the Zn and Cd combination (Zn100+Cd100) for 10 days under hydroponic culture. Compared with Cd100, the Cd content in stems, leaves, and xylem saps was 1.8, 1.6, and 1.3 times more than that in Zn100+Cd100, respectively. In addition, the production of reactive oxygen species in leaves was significantly upregulated in Cd100 compared with the control, and it was downregulated in Zn100. Comparative analyses of transcriptomes and proteomes were conducted with S. nigrum leaves. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were involved in Cd uptake, transport, and sequestration, and the upregulation of some transporter genes of Zn transporters (ZIPs), a natural resistance associated macrophage protein (Nramp1), a metal-nicotianamine transporter (YSL2), ATP-binding cassette transporters (ABCs), oligopeptide transporters (OPTs), and metallothionein (MTs) and glutathione S-transferase (GSTs) genes was higher in Zn100+Cd100 than in Cd100. In addition, differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) involved in electron transport chain, ATP, and chlorophyll biosynthesis, such as malate dehydrogenases (MDHs), ATPases, and chlorophyll a/b binding proteins, were mostly upregulated in Zn100. The results indicate that Zn supplement increases Cd accumulation and tolerance in S. nigrum by upregulating ATP-dependent Cd transport and sequestration pathways.

Abstract:In the environmental cycle of mercury (Hg), plants link the atmosphere, soil sphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere, serving as important sites for Hg transformation and translocation across these domains. The absorption and migration of Hg by plants play a critical role in the natural or environmental cycle of Hg. In this review, we outlined the existing technical methods for studying Hg behaviours involving plants, summarized the uptake pathways of Hg by different plant tissues from the environment, analyzed the transformation processes of Hg in plants and its various migration pathways, and demonstrated the changes in the source-sink relationship of Hg between plants and the environment. Additionally, we highlight knowledge gaps in existing research concerning the mechanisms of Hg transformation processes in plants, the role of marine plants in the environmental cycle of Hg, and the impact of global change on Hg cycle. This study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of current research on the relationship between Hg and plants, facilitating a quick understanding of the research progress and highlighting potential directions for future studies.

Spectral insight into thiosulfate-induced mercury speciation transformation in a historically polluted soil

Abstract:We studied the effect of different doses (0.5%, 2% and 5% (w/w)) of ammonium thiosulfate on mercury (Hg) speciation fractionation following its addition to the soil, as well as its accumulation by oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.), corn (Zea mays L.), and sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.), and compared them to a non-treated control in a historically polluted soil. The oilseed rape, corn, and sweet potato were planted consecutively in the same soils on days 30, 191, and 276, respectively after the addition of thiosulfate to the soil. The key results showed that bioavailable Hg contents in the rhizosphere soils ranged from 0.18 to 2.54 μg kg-1, 0.28 to 2.77 μg kg-1, and 0.24 to 2.22 μg kg-1, respectively, for the 0.5%, 2% and 5% thiosulfate treatments, which were close to the control soil (0.25 to 1.98 μg kg-1). The Hg L3-edge X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) results showed a tendency of the Hg speciation to transform from the Hg(SR)2 (initial soil, 56%; day-191 soil, 43%; day-276 soil, 46%, and day-356 soil, 16%) to nano particulated HgS (initial soil, 26%; day-191 soil, 42%; day-276 soil, 42%, and day-356 soil, 73%) with time in the soil treated with a 5% dose of thiosulfate. The Hg contents in the tissues of the crops, except for oilseed rape, were slightly affected by the addition of thiosulfate to the soil at all dosages, compared to the control. The addition of thiosulfate did not induce the movement of bioavailable Hg to the lower layer of the soil profile. We conclude a promotion of Hg immobilization by thiosulfate in the soil for over one year, offering a promising method for in-situ Hg remediation at Hg mining regions in China.
Zinc-Cadmium Interaction in Soil-Plant Systems Under Different Soil Properties and Phosphorus Levels

Abstract:To investigate the effects of soil properties and phosphorus(P)levels on zinc(Zn)-cadmium(Cd)interaction in soil-plant systems,two pot experiments were conducted.The soil used in experiment 1 was fertile clay with high levels of Zn and P,while,the soil in experiment 2 was arid sandy soil deficient of Zn and P.The results showed that,in experiment 1,addition of Zn(2~100 mg·kg-1)to soil had no significant effects on Cd concentrations in wheat(Triticum aestivum,L.)seedlings grown in Zn-affluent soils,and only when the added Zn was up to severe contamination,Cd uptake by wheat was inhibited significantly.In experiment 2,however,even low levels of Zn addition(1~10 mg·kg-1)had significant effects on Cd uptake by wheat(P<0.001).Addition of reagent pure P(CaHPO4)also had significant effects on Cd concentrations in shoots and roots of plants.In the past,it was generally ascribed to Cd impurity in P fertilizer that P fertilizer increased the absorption of Cd in wheat,but according to the above results,we suggested that P element itself had effects on Cd uptake by plants and Cd transfer from root to shoot.
Prediction Model for Mercury Transfer from Soil to Corn Grain and Its Cross-Species Extrapolation

Abstract:In this study the transfer characteristics of mercury (Hg) from a wide range of Chinese soils to corn grain (cultivar Zhengdan 958) were investigated. Prediction models were developed for determining the Hg bioconcentration factor (BCF) of Zhengdan 958 from soil, including the soil properties, such as pH, organic matter (OM) concentration, cation exchange capacity (CEC), total nitrogen concentration (TN), total phosphorus concentration (TP), total potassium concentration (TK), and total Hg concentration (THg), using multiple stepwise regression analysis. These prediction models were applied to other non-model corn cultivars using a cross-species extrapolation approach. The results indicated that the soil pH was the most important factor associated with the transfer of Hg from soil to corn grain. Hg bioaccumulation in corn grain increased with the decreasing pH. No significant differences were found between two prediction models derived from different rates of Hg applied to the soil as HgCl2. The prediction models established in this study can be applied to other non-model corn cultivars and are useful for predicting Hg bioconcentration in corn grain and assessing the ecological risk of Hg in different soils.

Abstract:Abstract Background Zinc (Zn) is an important nutrient for human beings, which is also an essential micronutrient for crop growth. This study investigated the role of Zn in coordinating the mineral elements absorption in modern wheat ( Triticum aestivum L . ) cultivars with a new developed method. Results A method was developed, and showed a robust capability to simultaneously investigate seven mineral elements uptake in wheat seedling. With this method, we found low Zn supply ( 1 μM) significantly inhibited the absorption of these elements. Cultivars with the green genes ( Rht-B1b and Rht-D1b ) showed a higher uptake capability on ammonium (NH 4 + ), and cultivars with Rht-B1b allele can uptake more phosphors (P), K, calcium (Ca), Mn and Zn compared to cultivars with Rht-D1b . Further analysis indicated higher uptake capability of NH 4 + in cultivars contained Rht s was independent of Zn. Conclusion The key role of Zn in coordinating for mineral elements absorption was identified in modern wheat cultivars, providing the reference for Zn application in wheat. Meanwhile, this study provides a robust method for quantifying the absorption of mineral elements, which may be adopted into the broadly investigations on the coordinated nutrients absorption of plant.

Abstract:New observations and updated models now suggest terrestrial ecosystems are net sink of atmospheric mercury (Hg), and the critical constrained process to identify the strengths of terrestrial sink is whether the large amount of Hg stored in vegetation originates from the soil as well as from the atmosphere. In this study, field open top chambers (OTCs) experiments reveal that rice plant can assimilate gaseous elemental mercury (GEM, Hg0) from the atmosphere through stomata, and Hg concentrations in rice leaves, upper and bottom stalks and grains increased with Hg0 levels in air, showing significantly quadratic linear relationships. Coupling field stable isotope soil amendment experiments, atmospheric source of Hg in rice plant is quantified with more than 90% of Hg accumulation in rice aboveground biomass from air and approximately 80% of rice root Hg from soil. Furthermore, elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) exposure led to lower Hg concentration in rice tissues through reduction stomatal conductance of rice leaf, and subsequently impact the capacity of Hg storage in rice aboveground parts from the atmosphere. The findings from experiments provide a foundation for future quantification of atmospheric sink of crops in local and larger scales and comprehensive evaluation atmosphere - terrestrial processes and exposure risks in the global Hg cycling.
