Abstract:The Drake Passage (DP) is the major geographic constriction for the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) and exerts a strong control on the exchange of physical, chemical, and biological properties between the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Ocean basins. Resolving changes in the flow of circumpolar water masses through this gateway is, therefore, crucial for advancing our understanding of the Southern Ocean's role in global ocean and climate variability. Here, we reconstruct changes in DP throughflow dynamics over the past 65,000 y based on grain size and geochemical properties of sediment records from the southernmost continental margin of South America. Combined with published sediment records from the Scotia Sea, we argue for a considerable total reduction of DP transport and reveal an up to ∼ 40% decrease in flow speed along the northernmost ACC pathway entering the DP during glacial times. Superimposed on this long-term decrease are high-amplitude, millennial-scale variations, which parallel Southern Ocean and Antarctic temperature patterns. The glacial intervals of strong weakening of the ACC entering the DP imply an enhanced export of northern ACC surface and intermediate waters into the South Pacific Gyre and reduced Pacific-Atlantic exchange through the DP ("cold water route"). We conclude that changes in DP throughflow play a critical role for the global meridional overturning circulation and interbasin exchange in the Southern Ocean, most likely regulated by variations in the westerly wind field and changes in Antarctic sea ice extent.

Abstract:Abstract The Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) represents the world’s largest ocean-current system and affects global ocean circulation, climate and Antarctic ice-sheet stability 1–3 . Today, ACC dynamics are controlled by atmospheric forcing, oceanic density gradients and eddy activity 4 . Whereas palaeoceanographic reconstructions exhibit regional heterogeneity in ACC position and strength over Pleistocene glacial–interglacial cycles 5–8 , the long-term evolution of the ACC is poorly known. Here we document changes in ACC strength from sediment cores in the Pacific Southern Ocean. We find no linear long-term trend in ACC flow since 5.3 million years ago (Ma), in contrast to global cooling 9 and increasing global ice volume 10 . Instead, we observe a reversal on a million-year timescale, from increasing ACC strength during Pliocene global cooling to a subsequent decrease with further Early Pleistocene cooling. This shift in the ACC regime coincided with a Southern Ocean reconfiguration that altered the sensitivity of the ACC to atmospheric and oceanic forcings 11–13 . We find ACC strength changes to be closely linked to 400,000-year eccentricity cycles, probably originating from modulation of precessional changes in the South Pacific jet stream linked to tropical Pacific temperature variability 14 . A persistent link between weaker ACC flow, equatorward-shifted opal deposition and reduced atmospheric CO 2 during glacial periods first emerged during the Mid-Pleistocene Transition (MPT). The strongest ACC flow occurred during warmer-than-present intervals of the Plio-Pleistocene, providing evidence of potentially increasing ACC flow with future climate warming.

Abstract:The Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) acts as a critical component to regulate the global thermohaline circulation and climate. However, active debate remains about the relative strength of ACC during current/past warm periods and underlying driving mechanisms. Here, we present sortable silt mean grain size records from the Scotia Sea to infer the ACC strength over the past 160 ka. The 22-ka cycles of sortable silt mean grain size suggest that the precession-driven contraction/expansion of Subtropical Jet dominates the migration of ACC fronts, and thus ACC speed and potential Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation stability. We find that the bottom flow speed during MIS 5e was over three times faster than the Holocene, with no apparent difference in ACC speed between the Holocene and the Last Glacial Maximum. We suggest that a southward shift of oceanic fronts of ~5° could cause the additional speed-up of ACC during MIS 5e. This could induce warmer water flowing in the ACC to approach and melt the Antarctica continental ice shelves, with corresponding effects on global sea level and the global climate.

Abstract:Earth's mightiest ocean current, the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC), regulates the exchange of heat and carbon between the ocean and the atmosphere, and influences vertical ocean structure, deep-water production and the global distribution of nutrients and chemical tracers. The eastward-flowing ACC occupies a unique circumglobal pathway in the Southern Ocean that was enabled by the tectonic opening of key oceanic gateways during the break-up of Gondwana (for example, by the opening of the Tasmanian Gateway, which connects the Indian and Pacific oceans). Although the ACC is a key component of Earth's present and past climate system, the timing of the appearance of diagnostic features of the ACC (for example, low zonal gradients in water-mass tracer fields) is poorly known and represents a fundamental gap in our understanding of Earth history. Here we show, using geophysically determined positions of continent-ocean boundaries, that the deep Tasmanian Gateway opened 33.5 ± 1.5 million years ago (the errors indicate uncertainty in the boundary positions). Following this opening, sediments from Indian and Pacific cores recorded Pacific-type neodymium isotope ratios, revealing deep westward flow equivalent to the present-day Antarctic Slope Current. We observe onset of the ACC at around 30 million years ago, when Southern Ocean neodymium isotopes record a permanent shift to modern Indian-Atlantic ratios. Our reconstructions of ocean circulation show that massive reorganization and homogenization of Southern Ocean water masses coincided with migration of the northern margin of the Tasmanian Gateway into the mid-latitude westerly wind band, which we reconstruct at 64° S, near to the northern margin. Onset of the ACC about 30 million years ago coincided with major changes in global ocean circulation and probably contributed to the lower atmospheric carbon dioxide levels that appear after this time.

Abstract:The Antarctic Circumpolar Current plays a pivotal role in global climate through its strong influence on the global overturning circulation, ocean heat and CO 2 uptake. However, when and how the Antarctic Circumpolar Current reached its modern-like characteristics remains disputed. Here we present neodymium isotope and sortable silt records from sediment cores in the Southwest Pacific and South Indian oceans spanning the past 31 million years. Our data indicate that a circumpolar current like that of today did not exist before the late Miocene cooling. These findings suggest that the emergence of a homogeneous and deep-reaching strong Antarctic Circumpolar Current was not linked solely to the opening and deepening of Southern Ocean Gateways triggering continental-scale Antarctic Ice Sheet expansion during the Eocene–Oligocene Transition ( ∼ 34 Ma). Instead, we find that besides tectonic pre-conditioning, the expansion of the Antarctic Ice Sheet and sea ice since the middle Miocene Climate Transition ( ∼ 14 Ma) played a crucial role. This led to stronger density contrast and intensified Southern Westerly Winds across the Southern Ocean, establishing a vigorous deep-reaching circumpolar flow and an enhanced global overturning circulation, which amplified the late Cenozoic global cooling.

Abstract:Ambiguity over the Eocene opening times of the Tasman Gateway and Drake Passage makes it difficult to determine the initiation time of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current. If the Tasman Gateway opened later than Drake Passage, then Australia may have prevented the proto‐ACC from forming. Recent modeling results have shown that only a relatively weak circumpolar transport results under Eocene surface forcing. This leads to warm and buoyant coastal water around Antarctica, which may impede the formation of deep waters and convective processes. This suggests that a change in deep water formation might be required to increase the density contrast across the Southern Ocean and increase circumpolar transport. Here we use a simple reduced gravity model with two basins, to represent the Atlantic and the Pacific. This fixes the density difference between surface and deep water and allows us to isolate the impact of deep water formation on circumpolar transport. With no obstacle on the southern boundary the circumpolar current increases its transport from 82.3 to 270.0 Sv with deep water formation. Placing an Antipodean landmass on the southern boundary reduces this transport as the landmass increases in size. However, circumpolar flow north of this landmass remains a possibility even without deep water formation. Weak circumpolar transport continues until the basin is completely blocked by the Antipodes. When the Antipodes is instead allowed to split from the southern boundary, circumpolar transport recovers to its unobstructed value. Flow rapidly switches to south of the Antipodes when the gateway is narrow.

Abstract:The Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) exerts a major control on the global distribution of heat, dissolved oxygen and carbon in the ocean. Yet the timing and cause of the inception of this system and its evolution since the start of the Cenozoic Era 65 million years ago (Ma) remain highly uncertain. Here we present records of microbial source indicators based on glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraether distributions from the Cenozoic Northwest Atlantic Ocean (~43‒18 Ma) and use them to infer changes in AMOC-driven deep-ocean oxygenation. At this location, oxygenation is strongly controlled by southwestward Deep Western Boundary Current transport of newly formed deep waters that feed AMOC. Our Eocene data show short-term high-amplitude variability and an overall decrease in oxygenation of AMOC-feed waters culminating in especially poor ventilation between ~36.5 and ~34 Ma. AMOC-feed waters became better oxygenated upon initiation of Antarctic glaciation at the Eocene/Oligocene transition, ~34 Ma, and were consistently well ventilated from ~30 Ma. Our findings indicate a close association between the inception of Antarctic glaciation and AMOC and suggest that both vertical mixing and wind-driven upwelling in the Southern Ocean were key to fully establishing AMOC as an agent of deep-ocean ventilation.

Abstract:The early Cenozoic opening of the Tasmanian Gateway (TG) and Drake Passage (DP), alongside the synergistic action of the westerly winds, led to a Southern Ocean transition from large, subpolar gyres to the onset of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC). However, the impact of the changing latitudinal position and strength of the wind stress in altering the early Southern Ocean circulation has been poorly addressed. Here, we use an eddy-permitting ocean model (0.25 ∘ ) with realistic late Eocene paleo-bathymetry to investigate the sensitivity of the Southern Ocean to paleo-latitudinal migrations (relative to the gateways) and strengthening of the wind stress. We find that southward wind stress shifts of 5 or 10 ∘ , with a shallow TG (300 m), lead to dominance of subtropical waters in the high latitudes and further warming of the Antarctic coast (increase by 2 ∘ C). Southward migrations of wind stress with a deep TG (1500 m) cause the shrinking of the subpolar gyres and cooling of the surface waters in the Southern Ocean (decrease by 3–4 ∘ C). With a 1500 m deep TG and maximum westerly winds aligning with both the TG and DP, we observe a proto-ACC with a transport of ∼47.9 Sv. This impedes the meridional transport of warm subtropical waters to the Antarctic coast, thus laying a foundation for thermal isolation of the Antarctic. Intriguingly, proto-ACC flow through the TG is much more sensitive to strengthened wind stress compared to the DP. We suggest that topographic form stress can balance surface wind stress at depth to support the proto-ACC while the sensitivity of the transport is likely associated with the momentum budget between wind stress and near-surface topographic form stress driven by the subtropical gyres. In summary, this study proposes that the cooling of Eocene Southern Ocean is a consequence of a combination of gateway deepening and the alignment of maximum wind stress with both gateways.

Topographic forcing of submesoscale instability in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current

Abstract:Subpolar frontal zones are characterized by energetic storms, intense seasonal cycles, and close connectivity with surrounding continental shelf topography. At the same time, predicting the ocean state depends on appropriate partition of resolved and parameterized dynamics, the latter of which requires understanding the dynamical processes generating diffusivity throughout the water column. While submesoscale frontal instabilities are shown to produce turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) and mixing in the surface boundary layer (SBL) of the global ocean, their development in complex dynamical regimes (e.g., elevated preexisting turbulence, large ageostrophic shear, or in proximity to topographic boundaries) is less understood. This study investigates the development of submesoscale instabilities, i.e. symmetric instability (SI) and centrifugal instability (CI), near topographic boundaries using a hindcast model of the Drake Passage and Scotia Sea region. The model suggests subsurface SI and CI are widespread along the northern continental margins of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) due to topographic shearing of the anticyclonic side of Polar Front jets. Forced instabilities may facilitate persistent mixing along Namuncurá - Burwood Bank, as well as in other southern (northern) hemisphere currents with low potential vorticity and a seamount or sloping topography on the left- (right-) downstream side.

Abstract:An obvious trend shift in the annual mean and winter mixed layer depth (MLD) in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) region was detected during the 1960–2021 period. Shallowing trends stopped in mid-1980s, followed by a period of weak trends. The MLD deepening trend difference between the two periods were mainly distributed in the western areas in the Drake Passage, the areas north to Victoria Land and Wilkes Land, and the central parts of the South Indian sector. The newly formed ocean current shear due to the meridional shift of the ACC flow axis between the two periods is the dominant driver for the MLD trends shift distributed in the western areas in the Drake Passage and the central parts of the South Indian sector. The saltier trends in the regions north to Victoria Land and Wilkes Land could be responsible for the strengthening mixing processes in this region.

Abstract:The sequence of deep ocean circulation changes between the Last Glacial Maximum and the Holocene provides important insights for understanding deglacial climate change and the role of the deep ocean in the global carbon cycle. Although it is known that significant amounts of carbon were sequestered in a deep overturning cell during glacial periods and released during deglaciation, the driving mechanisms for these changes remain unresolved. Southern Ocean sea-ice has recently been proposed to play a critical role in setting the global deep ocean stratification and circulation, and hence carbon storage, but testing such conceptual and modelling studies requires data constraining past circulation changes. To this end, we present the first deglacial dataset of neodymium (Nd) isotopes measured on absolute-dated deep-sea corals from modern Lower Circumpolar Deep Water depths in the Drake Passage. Our record demonstrates deglacial variability of 2.5 epsilon(Nd )units, with radiogenic values of up to epsilon(Nd) = -5.9 during the Last Glacial Maximum providing evidence for a stratified glacial circulation mode with restricted incorporation of Nd from North Atlantic Deep Water in the lower cell. During the deglaciation, a renewed Atlantic influence in the deep Southern Ocean is recorded early in Heinrich Stadial 1, coincident with Antarctic sea-ice retreat, and is followed by a brief return to more Pacific-like values during the Antarctic Cold Reversal. These changes demonstrate a strong influence of Southern Ocean processes in setting deep ocean circulation and support the proposed sea-ice control on deep ocean structure. Furthermore, by constraining the Nd isotopic composition of Lower Circumpolar Deep Water in the Southern Ocean, our new data are important for interpreting deglacial circulation changes in other ocean basins and support a spatially asynchronous return of North Atlantic Deep Water to the deep southeast and southwest Atlantic Ocean. Abstract:Abrupt climate changes in the past have been attributed to variations in Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) strength. However, the exact timing and magnitude of past AMOC shifts remain elusive, which continues to limit our understanding of the driving mechanisms of such climate variability. Here we show a consistent signal of the 231Pa/230Th proxy that reveals a spatially coherent picture of western Atlantic circulation changes over the last deglaciation, during abrupt millennial-scale climate transitions. At the onset of deglaciation, we observe an early slowdown of circulation in the western Atlantic from around 19 to 16.5 thousand years ago (ka), consistent with the timing of accelerated Eurasian ice melting. The subsequent weakened AMOC state persists for over a millennium (~16.5-15 ka), during which time there is substantial ice rafting from the Laurentide ice sheet. This timing indicates a role for melting ice in driving a two-step AMOC slowdown, with a positive feedback sustaining continued iceberg calving and climate change during Heinrich Stadial 1.

Abstract:Abstract The impacts of large‐scale climate variability on the current system and meridional transport in the Cosmonauts Sea off East Antarctica are studied by employing the satellite‐observed absolute dynamic topography (ADT) data and reanalysis hydrographic data. Three currents converge in the Cosmonauts Sea: the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC), the Weddell Gyre Eastern Branch (WGeb) and the Antarctic Slope Current (ASC) containing the Antarctic Slope Front (ASF) topographically locked in the slope region. Strong seasonal and interannual variations are associated with these currents. The ACC and ASC are both stronger in autumn and weaker in spring and summer, while the WGeb extends eastward in winter and retreats in summer. On the interannual timescale, the Southern Annular Mode (SAM) reinforces the westerlies during its positive phase, pushing the ACC southward and suppressing westward ASC, and vice versa. The results on related mechanisms suggest the significant barotropic modulations induced by the winds on ocean dynamics from both the sea surface and interior ocean. The westerlies could affect the meridional sea level gradient through Ekman transport convergence, inducing the geostrophic adjustment of currents. Moreover, the vorticity input from the wind field produces meridional water transport under the topographic and planetary β ‐effects, potentially influencing the structure of the ASF and associated ASC. This frontal adjustment is superimposed on the background barotropic variations and causes strong local responses of the currents to the remote wind forcing, which indicates a propagation of variability signals from large‐scale barotropic circulations to frontal‐scale baroclinic currents in the ocean interior.

On the mechanisms of late 20th century sea‐surface temperature trends over the Antarctic Circumpolar Current

Abstract:The Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC), with its associated three‐dimensional circulation, plays an important role in global climate. This study concentrates on surface signatures of recent climate change in the ACC region and on mechanisms that control this change. Examination of climate model simulations shows that they match the observed late 20th century sea‐surface temperature (SST) trends averaged over this region quite well, despite underestimating the observed surface‐wind increases. Such wind increases, however, are expected to lead to significant cooling of the region, contradicting the observed SST trends. Motivated by recent theories of the ACC response to variable wind and radiative forcing, the authors used two idealized models to assess contributions of various dynamical processes to the SST evolution in the region. In particular, a high‐resolution channel model of the ACC responds to increasing winds by net surface ACC warming due to enhanced mesoscale turbulence and associated heat transports in the mixed layer. These fluxes, modeled, in a highly idealized fashion, via increased lateral surface mixing in a coarse‐resolution hybrid climate model, substantially offset zonally non‐uniform surface cooling due to air‐sea flux and Ekman‐transport anomalies. Abstract:Through Earth's history, the evolution of both mantle and oceanic gateways entails a series of processes that culminate in global changes. This synthesis article focuses on the linkages among mantle, crustal, oceanographic and global change processes that are involved in the evolution of a gateway. These processes include the upper mantle dynamics, the thermal structure of the lithosphere, tectonic processes, oceanic current distribution, and evolution of biota. Such processes are recorded at different layers of the lithosphere, for instance, as magnetic properties of the crust or ocean sediments. Feedback between mantle dynamics and lithospheric stresses are involved in rifting, oceanic spreading, subduction and collisional processes. The thermal state of the lithosphere controls elevation of the seafloor, for example. To understand the linkages, we summarize the processes involved in what is proposed to be the final break-up of the Gondwana supercontinent, the breakup between South America and Antarctica and the formation of the Drake Passage. This break-up allowed for the flow of upper mantle material as well as for the initiation of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current which translated later into thermal isolation of Antarctica and diversification/extinction of species. The different tectonic processes identified in the Drake Passage and Scotia Sea since its formation modified the free flow of asthenospheric material as well as oceanic currents with significant implications for the formation of new oceanic crust and for the evolution of the thermal state of the lithosphere. In a similar way, the same tectonic processes had an impact on ocean circulation which affected biota and climate in the Antarctic region and globally. The ability to identify how all these processes are interlinked implies a considerable gain of knowledge for our understanding on how our planet operates and how interior dynamics affect life on the surface.

Abstract:Abstract The Antarctic Slope Current (ASC) is a coherent circulation feature that rings the Antarctic continental shelf and regulates the flow of water towards the Antarctic coastline. The structure and variability of the ASC influences key processes near the Antarctic coastline that have global implications, such as the melting of Antarctic ice shelves and water mass formation that determines the strength of the global overturning circulation. Recent theoretical, modeling, and observational advances have revealed new dynamical properties of the ASC, making it timely to review. Earlier reviews of the ASC focused largely on local classifications of water properties of the ASC's primary front. Here, we instead provide a classification of the current's frontal structure based on the dynamical mechanisms that govern both the along‐slope and cross‐slope circulation; these two modes of circulation are strongly coupled, similar to the Antarctic Circumpolar Current. Highly variable motions, such as dense overflows, tides, and eddies are shown to be critical components of cross‐slope and cross‐shelf exchange, but understanding of how the distribution and intensity of these processes will evolve in a changing climate remains poor due to observational and modeling limitations. Results linking the ASC to larger modes of climate variability, such as El Niño, show that the ASC is an integral part of global climate. An improved dynamical understanding of the ASC is still needed to accurately model and predict future Antarctic sea ice extent, the stability of the Antarctic ice sheets, and the Southern Ocean's contribution to the global carbon cycle.

Abstract:Abstract Land‐ice flow in Antarctica has experienced multi‐annual acceleration in response to increased rates of ice thinning, ice‐shelf collapse and grounding‐line retreat. Superimposed upon this trend, recent observations have revealed that land‐ice flow in the Antarctic Peninsula exhibits seasonal velocity variability with distinct summertime speed‐ups. The mechanism, or mechanisms, responsible for driving this seasonality are unconstrained at present, yet detailed, process‐based understanding of such forcing will be important for accurately estimating Antarctica's future contributions to sea level. Here, we perform time‐series analysis on an array of remotely sensed, modeled and reanalysis data sets to examine the influence of potential drivers of ice‐flow seasonality in the Antarctic Peninsula. We show that both meltwater presence and ocean temperature act as statistically significant precursors to summertime ice‐flow acceleration, although each elicits an ice‐velocity response after a distinct lag, with the former prompting a more immediate response. Furthermore, we find that the timing and magnitude of these local drivers are influenced by large‐scale climate phenomena, namely the Amundsen Sea Low and the El Niño Southern Oscillation, with the latter initiating an anomalous wintertime ice‐flow acceleration event in 2016. This hitherto unidentified link between seasonal ice flow and large‐scale climatic forcing may have important implications for ice discharge at and beyond the Antarctic Peninsula in the future, depending upon how the magnitude, frequency and duration of such climate phenomena evolve in a warming world.

Abstract:The target is the non-secular, non-seasonal, interannual ice-mass redistribution over the Antarctica continent, as observed by the satellite mission GRACE (Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment) for the period from 2002 to 2016. We employ the empirical orthogonal function (EOF) and complex EOF (CEOF) methods on the GRACE monthly time-variable gravity in the form of the mascon data. We find three separate phenomena on different timescales that are hitherto unreported: (i) EOF Mode 1 represents an interannual standing “seesaw” pattern largely concentrates along the coast, which we refer to as the Antarctica Coastal Dipole (ACD), with turnarounds coincident with ENSO events, relative to precipitation anomalies, whereas Mode 2-3 both correlate with the Antarctica Oscillation (AAO); (ii) the leading CEOF Mode shows two different propagating waves, one is the Eastward Propagation (EP) with the periodicity of ∼4.7 years most evident in the East Antarctica, may be induced by the Antarctica Circumpolar Wave; (iii) another is a Westward Propagation (WP) with ∼2 years periodicity in the West Antarctica that mainly travels from the Ronnie Ice Shelf to the Ross Ice Shelf, may relate to AAO.

Abstract:A crucial factor influencing the mass balance of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet is the Amundsen Sea Low (ASL), a climatological low‐pressure region situated off the West Antarctic coast. However, albeit the deepening of the ASL since the 1950s has been attributed to anthropogenic forcing, the multi‐decadal variability of the ASL remains poorly understood, because of a lack of long observations. Here, we apply a newly developed data assimilation method to reconstruct the ASL over 1870–2000. We study the forced and internal variability of the ASL using our new reconstruction in concert with existing large ensembles of climate model simulations. Our findings robustly demonstrate that an atmospheric teleconnection originating from the tropical Indo‐Pacific is the main driver of ASL variability at the multi‐decadal time scale, with resemblance to the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation. Since the mid‐20th century, anthropogenic forcing has emerged as a dominant contributor to the strengthening of the ASL.
