Abstract:Roses are consistently ranked at the forefront in cut flower production. Increasing demands of market and changing climate conditions have resulted in the need to further improve the diversity and quality of traits. However, frequent hybridization leads to highly heterozygous nature, including the allelic variants. Therefore, the absence of comprehensive genomic information leads to them making it challenging to molecular breeding. Here, two haplotype-resolved chromosome genomes for Rosa chinensis 'Chilong Hanzhu' (2n = 14) which is high heterozygous diploid old Chinese rose are generated. An amount of genetic variation (1,605,616 SNPs, 209,575 indels) is identified. 13,971 allelic genes show differential expression patterns between two haplotypes. Importantly, these differences hold valuable insights into regulatory mechanisms of traits. RcMYB114b can influence cyanidin-3-glucoside accumulation and the allelic variation in its promoter leads to differences in promoter activity, which as a factor control petal color. Moreover, gene family expansion may contribute to the abundance of terpenes in floral scents. Additionally, RcANT1, RcDA1, RcAG1 and RcSVP1 genes are involved in regulation of petal number and size under heat stress treatment. This study provides a foundation for molecular breeding to improve important characteristics of roses.

Abstract:Roses have high cultural and economic importance as ornamental plants and in the perfume industry. We report the rose whole-genome sequencing and assembly and resequencing of major genotypes that contributed to rose domestication. We generated a homozygous genotype from a heterozygous diploid modern rose progenitor, Rosa chinensis ‘Old Blush’. Using single-molecule real-time sequencing and a meta-assembly approach, we obtained one of the most comprehensive plant genomes to date. Diversity analyses highlighted the mosaic origin of ‘La France’, one of the first hybrids combining the growth vigor of European species and the recurrent blooming of Chinese species. Genomic segments of Chinese ancestry identified new candidate genes for recurrent blooming. Reconstructing regulatory and secondary metabolism pathways allowed us to propose a model of interconnected regulation of scent and flower color. This genome provides a foundation for understanding the mechanisms governing rose traits and should accelerate improvement in roses, Rosaceae and ornamentals.

Abstract:Abstract Background Rubus is the largest genus of the family Rosaceae and is valued as medicinal, edible, and ornamental plants. Here, we sequenced and assembled eight chloroplast (cp) genomes of Rubus from the Dabie Mountains in Central China. Fifty-one Rubus species were comparatively analyzed for the cp genomes including the eight newly discovered genomes and forty-three previously reported in GenBank database (NCBI). Results The eight newly obtained cp genomes had the same quadripartite structure as the other cp genomes in Rubus . The length of the eight plastomes ranged from 155,546 bp to 156,321 bp with similar GC content (37.0 to 37.3%). The results indicated 133–134 genes were annotated for the Rubus plastomes, which contained 88 or 89 protein coding genes (PCGs), 37 transfer RNA genes (tRNAs), and eight ribosomal RNA genes (rRNAs). Among them, 16 (or 18) of the genes were duplicated in the IR region. Structural comparative analysis results showed that the gene content and order were relatively preserved. Nucleotide variability analysis identified nine hotspot regions for genomic divergence and multiple simple sequences repeats (SSRs), which may be used as markers for genetic diversity and phylogenetic analysis. Phylogenetic relationships were highly supported within the family Rosaceae, as evidenced by sub-clade taxa cp genome sequences. Conclusion Thus, the whole plastome may be used as a super-marker in phylogenetic studies of this genus.

Abstract:Rosa chinensis, an important ancestor species of Rosa hybrida, the most popular ornamental plant species worldwide, produces flowers with diverse colors and fragrances. The R2R3-MYB transcription factor family controls a wide variety of plant-specific metabolic processes, especially phenylpropanoid metabolism. Despite their importance for the ornamental value of flowers, the evolution of R2R3-MYB genes in plants has not been comprehensively characterized. In this study, 121 predicted R2R3-MYB gene sequences were identified in the rose genome. Additionally, a phylogenomic synteny network (synnet) was applied for the R2R3-MYB gene families in 35 complete plant genomes. We also analyzed the R2R3-MYB genes regarding their genomic locations, Ka/Ks ratio, encoded conserved motifs, and spatiotemporal expression. Our results indicated that R2R3-MYBs have multiple synteny clusters. The RcMYB114a gene was included in the Rosaceae-specific Cluster 54, with independent evolutionary patterns. On the basis of these results and an analysis of RcMYB114a-overexpressing tobacco leaf samples, we predicted that RcMYB114a functions in the phenylpropanoid pathway. We clarified the relationship between R2R3-MYB gene evolution and function from a new perspective. Our study data may be relevant for elucidating the regulation of floral metabolism in roses at the transcript level.

Abstract:Rosa rugosa , a perennial shrub belonging to family Rosaceae, is a well-known ornamental plant. Its petals contain an abundance of essential oils and anthocyanins with enormous economic and health benefits when used as edible or cosmetic ingredients. The whole genome of R. rugosa was sequenced in 2021, which provided opportunities and challenges for gene regulation. However, many gene functions remain unknown. Therefore, an analytical platform named RoseAP (http://www.gzybioinformatics.cn/RoseAP/index.php) for the functional analysis of R. rugosa genes was constructed. It improved the gene annotation rate by integrating and analyzing genomic and transcriptomic datasets. First, 38,815 genes, covering 97.76% of the coding genes, were annotated functionally and structurally using a variety of algorithms and rules. Second, a total of 33 transcriptome samples were integrated, including 23 samples from our lab and 10 samples from the SRA database. A co-expression network containing approximately 29,657 positive or negative gene pairs, covering 74.7% of the coding genes, was constructed based on PCC and MR algorithms. Network analysis revealed that the DFR function was closely related to anthocyanin metabolism. It demonstrated the reliability of the network. Several SAUR genes of R. rugosa shared similar expression patterns. RoseAP was used to determine the sequence, structure, functional annotation, expression profile, regulatory network, and functional modules at the transcriptional and protein levels by inputting gene IDs. In addition, auxiliary analytical tools, including BLAST, gene set enrichment, orthologue conversion, gene sequence extraction, gene expression value extraction, and JBrowse, were utilized. Regular updates to RoseAP are expected to facilitate mining of gene function and promote genetic improvement in R. rugosa .

Abstract:Background: Many species of the genus Rosa have been used as ornamental plants and traditional medicines. However, industrial development of roses is hampered due to highly divergent characteristics. Methods: We analyzed the chloroplast (cp) genomes of Rosa laevigata, R. rugosa and R. canina, including the repeat sequences, inverted-repeat (IR) contractions and expansions, and mutation sites. Results: The size of the cp genome of R. laevigata, R. rugosa and R. canina was between 156 333 bp and 156 533 bp, and contained 113 genes (30 tRNA genes, 4 rRNA genes and 79 protein-coding genes). The regions with a higher degree of variation were screened out (trnH-GUU, trnS-GCU, trnG-GCC, psbA-trnH, trnC-GCA,petN, trnT-GGU, psbD, petA, psbJ, ndhF, rpl32,psaC and ndhE). Such higher-resolution loci lay the foundation of barcode-based identification of cp genomes in Rosa genus. A phylogenetic tree of the genus Rosa was reconstructed using the full sequences of the cp genome. These results were largely in accordance with the current taxonomic status of Rosa. Conclusions: Our data: (i) reveal that cp genomes can be used for the identification and classification of Rosa species; (ii) can aid studies on molecular identification, genetic transformation, expression of secondary metabolic pathways and resistant proteins; (iii) can lay a theoretical foundation for the discovery of disease-resistance genes and cultivation of Rosa species.

Abstract:Modern rose ( Rosa hybrida ) is a recently formed interspecific hybrid and has become one of the most important and widely cultivated ornamentals. Here we report the haplotype-resolved chromosome-scale genome assembly of the tetraploid R. hybrida 'Samantha' ('JACmantha') and a genome variation map of 233 Rosa accessions involving various wild species, and old and modern cultivars. Homologous chromosomes of 'Samantha' exhibit frequent homoeologous exchanges. Population genomic and genomic composition analyses reveal the contributions of wild Rosa species to modern roses and highlight that R. odorata and its derived cultivars are important contributors to modern roses, much like R. chinensis 'Old Blush'. Furthermore, selective sweeps during modern rose breeding associated with major agronomic traits, including continuous and recurrent flowering, double flower, flower senescence and disease resistance, are identified. This study provides insights into the genetic basis of modern rose origin and breeding history, and offers unprecedented genomic resources for rose improvement.

Abstract:CCHC-type zinc finger proteins (CCHC-ZFPs), ubiquitous across plant species, are integral to their growth, development, hormonal regulation, and stress adaptation. Roses (Rosa sp.), as one of the most significant and extensively cultivated ornamentals, account for more than 30% of the global cut-flower market. Despite its significance, the CCHC gene family in roses (Rosa sp.) remains unexplored. This investigation identified and categorized 41 CCHC gene members located on seven chromosomes of rose into 14 subfamilies through motif distribution and phylogenetic analyses involving ten additional plant species, including Ginkgo biloba, Ostreococcus lucimarinus, Arabidopsis thaliana, and others. This study revealed that dispersed duplication likely plays a crucial role in the diversification of the CCHC genes, with the Ka/Ks ratio suggesting a history of strong purifying selection. Promoter analysis highlighted a rich presence of cis-acting regulatory elements linked to both abiotic and biotic stress responses. Differential expression analysis under drought conditions grouped the 41 CCHC gene members into five distinct clusters, with those in group 4 exhibiting pronounced regulation in roots and leaves under severe drought. Furthermore, virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) of the RcCCHC25 member from group 4 compromised drought resilience in rose foliage. This comprehensive analysis lays the groundwork for further investigations into the functional dynamics of the CCHC gene family in rose physiology and stress responses.

Analysis of the genetic diversity and molecular phylogeography of the endangered wild rose (Rosa rugosa) in China based on chloroplast genes

Abstract:In this study, 3 chloroplast sequences (rnL-trnF, rpl20-rps12, and rbcl) were amplified and sequenced in 236 individuals from 12 wild rose (Rosa rugosa) populations in China to determine their genetic diversity, genetic differentiation and pedigree geographic structure in order to provide information necessary for formulating protection strategies. In total, 19 haplotypes were obtained. The gene flow (Nm) among the wild rose populations was 0.7, and the species exhibited low overall genetic diversity (Ht = 0.427 ± 0.0863). The genetic differentiation coefficients of wild rose were Nst = 0.270 > Gst = 0.197 (p < 0.01), indicating that the wild rose populations in China have obvious phylogeographic structure. Analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) showed that genetic variation in wild rose occurs mainly within populations (77.27%) rather than between populations (22.73%). Furthermore, the wild rose populations exhibited a large degree of genetic differentiation (Fst = 0.2273). The results of a Mantel test showed that geographical isolation was not the main factor causing the genetic differentiation among the wild rose populations. A mismatch analysis curve and neutrality test indicated that the wild rose populations recently expanded. There may be multiple refuges for wild rose, such as the Shandong Yantai (DYZ) population, the Weihai (CSZ) population in the south, and the Hunchun (JXZ) population in the north. Orogeny, the formation of the Bohai Sea, and human activities are important drivers of the fragmented distribution of wild rose in China.

Abstract:Summary High‐quality genome of rosemary (Salvia rosmarinus) represents a valuable resource and tool for understanding genome evolution and environmental adaptation as well as its genetic improvement. However, the existing rosemary genome did not provide insights into the relationship between antioxidant components and environmental adaptability. In this study, by employing Nanopore sequencing and Hi‐C technologies, a total of 1.17 Gb (97.96%) genome sequences were mapped to 12 chromosomes with 46 121 protein‐coding genes and 1265 non‐coding RNA genes. Comparative genome analysis reveals that rosemary had a closely genetic relationship with Salvia splendens and Salvia miltiorrhiza, and it diverged from them approximately 33.7 million years ago (MYA), and one whole‐genome duplication occurred around 28.3 MYA in rosemary genome. Among all identified rosemary genes, 1918 gene families were expanded, 35 of which are involved in the biosynthesis of antioxidant components. These expanded gene families enhance the ability of rosemary adaptation to adverse environments. Multi‐omics (integrated transcriptome and metabolome) analysis showed the tissue‐specific distribution of antioxidant components related to environmental adaptation. During the drought, heat and salt stress treatments, 36 genes in the biosynthesis pathways of carnosic acid, rosmarinic acid and flavonoids were up‐regulated, illustrating the important role of these antioxidant components in responding to abiotic stresses by adjusting ROS homeostasis. Moreover, cooperating with the photosynthesis, substance and energy metabolism, protein and ion balance, the collaborative system maintained cell stability and improved the ability of rosemary against harsh environment. This study provides a genomic data platform for gene discovery and precision breeding in rosemary. Our results also provide new insights into the adaptive evolution of rosemary and the contribution of antioxidant components in resistance to harsh environments.

Multi-omics analyzes of Rosa gigantea illuminate tea scent biosynthesis and release mechanisms

Abstract:Rose is an important ornamental crop cultivated globally for perfume production. However, our understanding of the mechanisms underlying scent production and molecular breeding for fragrance is hindered by the lack of a reference genome for tea roses. We present the first complete telomere-to-telomere (T2T) genome of Rosa gigantea, with high quality (QV > 60), including detailed characterization of the structural features of repetitive regions. The expansion of genes associated with phenylpropanoid biosynthesis may account for the unique tea scent. We uncover the release rhythm of aromatic volatile organic compounds and their gene regulatory networks through comparative genomics and time-ordered gene co-expression networks. Analyzes of eugenol homologs demonstrate how plants attract pollinators using specialized phenylpropanoids in specific tissues. This study highlights the conservation and utilization of genetic diversity from wild endangered species through multi-omics approaches, providing a scientific foundation for enhancing rose fragrance via de novo domestication.
The chromosome-level genome and functional database accelerate research about biosynthesis of secondary metabolites in Rosa roxburghii

Abstract:Rosa roxburghii Tratt, a valuable plant in China with long history, is famous for its fruit. It possesses various secondary metabolites, such as L-ascorbic acid (vitamin C), alkaloids and poly saccharides, which make it a high nutritional and medicinal value. Here we characterized the chromosome-level genome sequence of R. roxburghii, comprising seven pseudo-chromosomes with a total size of 531 Mb and a heterozygosity of 0.25%. We also annotated 45,226 coding gene loci after masking repeat elements. Orthologs for 90.1% of the Complete Single-Copy BUSCOs were found in the R. roxburghii annotation. By aligning with protein sequences from public platform, we annotated 85.89% genes from R. roxburghii. Comparative genomic analysis revealed that R. roxburghii diverged from Rosa chinensis approximately 5.58 to 13.17 million years ago, and no whole-genome duplication event occurred after the divergence from eudicots. To fully utilize this genomic resource, we constructed a genomic database RroFGD with various analysis tools. Otherwise, 69 enzyme genes involved in L-ascorbate biosynthesis were identified and a key enzyme in the biosynthesis of vitamin C, GDH (L-Gal-1-dehydrogenase), is used as an example to introduce the functions of the database. This genome and database will facilitate the future investigations into gene function and molecular breeding in R. roxburghii.
Rose without prickle: genomic insights linked to moisture adaptation

Abstract:Abstract Prickles act against herbivores, pathogens or mechanical injury, while also preventing water loss. However, whether prickles have new function and the molecular genetics of prickle patterning remain poorly explored. Here, we generated a high-quality reference genome assembly for ‘Basye's Thornless’ (BT), a prickle-free cultivar of Rosa wichuraiana, to identify genetic elements related to stem prickle development. The BT genome harbors a high level of sequence diversity in itself and with cultivar ‘Old Blush’ (R. chinensis), a founder genotype in rose domestication. Inheritance of stem prickle density was determined and two QTL were identified. Differentially expressed genes in QTL were involved in water-related functions, suggesting that prickle density may hitchhike with adaptations to moist environments. While the prickle-related gene-regulatory-network (GRN) was highly conserved, the expression variation of key candidate genes was associated with prickle density. Our study provides fundamental resources and insights for genome evolution in the Rosaceae. Ongoing efforts on identification of the molecular bases for key rose traits may lead to improvements for horticultural markets.

Abstract:Knowledge of root canal morphology and variations is an essential factor to successful endodontic treatment. Presence of extra roots, canals, lateral canals, deltas etc., is commonly encountered. Maxillary second molar with two palatal roots or root canals is a rare dental anatomy. The purpose of this case report is to describe the successful endodontic management of a maxillary second molar with four root canals using a single reciprocating file system. The morphology is a typical characterized by two palatal roots with widely separated two orifices and canals. The tooth presented an individual mesiobuccal, distobuccal and two separate palatal roots.

Abstract:Rose is one of the most important ornamental crops of the family Rosaceae. It is a complex crop having a patchy genome with different ploidies (2× to 10×), majorly tetraploid. With advancements in technologies, Rosa species are also being explored to understand the genetic, genomics, and molecular mechanisms behind variations of the traits. Whole-genome sequence information for the two Rosa spp. viz R. chinensis and R multiflora are available in three different studies. High-density SNP chip (68 K) further complements the molecular studies in Rose. A number of genes/QTLs have been identified and well-characterised for important traits using high-density genetic maps. Apart from genetics, epigenetics including DNA methylations and microRNAs are also being explored and found to be associated with diverse phenotypes. Despite substantial molecular tools and information, rose is still bred through conventional methods, perhaps due to its complex genome and ploidy. Thus in this review, an attempt has been made to compile all the existing molecular, genetics and genomics facts in rose and its possible utilisation in rose improvement programmes. We also discussed the forth coming prospects that can be found very potential for rose breeding.
Transcriptome and chemical analyses revealed the mechanism of flower color formation in Rosa rugosa

Abstract:Rosa rugosa is a famous Chinese traditional flower with high ornamental value and well environmental adapt ability. The cultivation of new colorful germplasms to improve monotonous flower color could promote its landscape application. However, the mechanism of flower color formation in R. rugosa remains unclear. In this study, combined analyses of the chemical and transcriptome were performed in the R. rugosa germplasms with representative flower colors. Among the identified anthocyanins, cyanidin 3,5-O-diglucoside (Cy3G5G) and peonidin 3,5-O-diglucoside (Pn3G5G) were the two dominant anthocyanins in the petals of R. rugosa. The sum content of Cy3G5G and Pn3G5G was responsible for the petal color intensity, such as pink or purple, light- or dark- red. The ratio of Cy3G5G to Pn3G5G was contributed to the petal color hue, that is, red or pink/purple. Maintaining both high relative and high absolute content of Cy3G5G may be the precondition for forming red-colored petals in R. rugosa. Cyanidin biosynthesis shunt was the dominant pathway for anthocyanin accumulation in R. rugosa, which may be the key reason for the presence of monotonous petal color in R. rugosa, mainly pink/purple. In the upstream pathway of cyanidin biosynthesis, 35 differentially expressed structural genes encoding 12 enzymes co-expressed to regulate the sum contents of Cy3G5G and Pn3G5G, and then determined the color intensity of petals. RrAOMT, involved in the downstream pathway of cyanidin biosynthesis, regulated the ratio of Cy3G5G to Pn3G5G via methylation and then determined the color hue of petals. It was worth mentioning that significantly higher delphinidin-3,5-O-diglucoside content and RrF3'5'H expression were detected from deep purple-red-flowered 8-16 germplasm with somewhat unique and visible blue hue. Three candidate key transcription factors identified by correlation analysis, RrMYB108, RrC1, and RrMYB114, might play critical roles in the control of petal color by regulating the expression of both RrAOMT and other multiple structural genes. These results provided novel insights into anthocyanin accumulation and flower coloration mechanism in R. rugosa, and the candidate key genes involved in anthocyanin biosynthesis could be valuable resources for the breeding of ornamental plants in future.
Inferring complex evolutionary history of the closely related East Asian wild roses in Rosa sect. Synstylae (Rosaceae) based on genomic evidence from conserved orthologs

Abstract:Background and aims: The section Synstylae in genus Rosa (Rosaceae) comprises 25-36 species and includes several major progenitors of modern rose cultivars. East Asian Synstylae species have recently diverged and are closely related, and their phylogenetic relationships remain unclear. In the present study, we employed a conserved ortholog set (COS) markers and genome-wide nuclear orthologs to elucidate their phylogenetic relationships and unravel their complex evolutionary history. Methods: Utilising on eight Rosaceae COS (RosCOS) markers, we analysed a total of 137 accessions representing 15 East Asian Synstylae taxa to establish a robust phylogenetic framework and reconstruct ancestral areas. Furthermore, we constructed the species tree for eight representative species and estimated their divergence times based on 1,683 genome-wide orthologs. The species tree-gene tree coalescence time comparison, Patterson's D, f4-ratio, and f-branch statistics were analysed to identify incomplete lineage sorting (ILS), genetic introgression, and reticulation events using conserved ortholog data. Key results: RosCOS markers and genome-wide orthologs effectively resolved the robust phylogeny of East Asian Rosa sect. Synstylae. Species divergence times estimated with genome-wide orthologs indicated that East Asian Synstylae species have recently diverged, with an estimated crown age of approximately 2 Mya. The rampant gene tree discordance indicated the possibility of ILS and/or genetic introgression. In the section Synstylae, deeper coalescence in the gene trees compared to the species tree suggested ILS as a source of gene tree discordance. Further, Patterson's D and f-branch statistics indicated that several lineages in the section were involved in genetic introgression. Conclusions: We have unravelled the complex evolutionary history of East Asian Rosa sect. Synstylae, including recent species divergences, ILS, and genetic introgression. Coupled with the geographical and ecological complexity of East Asia, ILS and genetic introgression may have contributed to the rapid diversification of East Asian Synstylae species by permitting adaptation to diverse environments.
Phylogenomic and Syntenic Data Demonstrate Complex Evolutionary Processes in Early Radiation of the Rosids

Abstract:Some of the most vexing problems of deep level relationship that remain in angiosperms involve the superrosids. The superrosid clade contains a quarter of all angiosperm species, with 18 orders in three subclades (Vitales, Saxifragales and core rosids) exhibiting remarkable morphological and ecological diversity. To help resolve deep-level relationships, we constructed a high-quality chromosome-level genome assembly for Tiarella polyphylla (Saxifragaceae) thus providing broader genomic representation of Saxifragales. Whole genome microsynteny analysis of superrosids showed that Saxifragales shared more synteny clusters with core rosids than Vitales, further supporting Saxifragales as more closely related with core rosids. To resolve the ordinal phylogeny of superrosids, we screened 122 single copy nuclear genes from genomes of 36 species, representing all 18 superrosid orders. Vitales were recovered as sister to all other superrosids (Saxifragales + core rosids). Our data suggest dramatic differences in relationships compared to earlier studies within core rosids. Fabids should be restricted to the nitrogen-fixing clade, while Picramniales, the Celastrales-Malpighiales (CM) clade, Huerteales, Oxalidales, Sapindales, Malvales and Brassicales formed an "expanded" malvid clade. The Celastrales-Oxalidales-Malpighiales (COM) clade (sensu APG IV) was not monophyletic. Crossosomatales, Geraniales, Myrtales and Zygophyllales did not belong to either of our well-supported malvids or fabids. There is strong discordance between nuclear and plastid phylogenetic hypotheses for superrosid relationships; we show that this is best explained by a combination of incomplete lineage sorting and ancient reticulation.
Chromosome-level Genome Assembly and Population Genetic Analysis of a Critically Endangered Rhododendron Provide Insights into Its Conservation.

Abstract:Rhododendrons are woody plants, famous throughout the world as having high horticultural value. However, many wild species are currently threatened with extinction. Here, we report for the first time a high-quality, chromosome-level genome of Rhododendron griersonianum, which has contributed to approximately 10% of all horticultural rhododendron varieties but which in its wild form has been evaluated as critically endangered. The final genome assembly, which has a contig N50 size of approximately 34 M and a total length of 677 M, is the highest-quality genome sequenced within the genus to date, in part due to its low heterozygosity (0.18%). Identified repeats constitute approximately 57% of the genome, and 38 280 protein-coding genes were predicted with high support. We further resequenced 31 individuals of R. griersonianum as well as 30 individuals of its widespread relative R. delavayi, and performed additional conservation genomic analysis. The results showed that R. griersonianum had lower genetic diversity (theta = 2.58e-3; pi = 1.94e-3) when compared not only to R. delavayi (theta = 11.61e-3, pi = 12.97e-3), but also to most other woody plants. Furthermore, three severe genetic bottlenecks were detected using both the Stairway plot and fastsimcoal2 analysis, which are thought to have occurred in the late Middle Pleistocene and the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) period. After these bottlenecks, R. griersonianum recovered and maintained a constant effective population size (>25 000) until now. Intriguingly, R. griersonianum has accumulated significantly more deleterious mutations in the homozygous state than R. delavayi, and several deleterious mutations (e.g., in genes involved in the response to heat stress) are likely to have harmed the adaptation of this plant to its surroundings. This high-quality, chromosome-level genome and the population genomic analysis of the critically endangered R. griersonianum will provide an invaluable resource as well as insights for future study in this species to facilitate conservation and in the genus Rhododendron in general.
