Abstract:We present an analytical framework to describe the complex nonlinear response of two-dimensional porous mechanical metamaterials. We adopt a geometric approach to elasticity in which pores are represented by elastic charges, and show that this method captures with high level of accuracy both the shape deformation of individual pores as well as collective deformation patterns resulting from interactions between neighboring pores. Specifically, we show that quadrupoles and hexadecapoles - the two lowest order multipoles available in elasticity - are capable of matching the experimentally observed evolution in shape and relative orientation of the holes in a variety of periodic porous mechanical metamaterials. Our work demonstrates the ability of elastic charges to capture the physics of highly deformable porous solids and paves the way to the development of new theoretical frameworks for the description and rational design of porous mechanical metamaterials.

Abstract:The ability to design and fabricate materials with tailored mechanical properties, combined with immunity to damage, is a frontier of materials engineering. For example, materials which are characterized by elastic properties that depend on the position inside a medium are required in applications where structural stability has to be combined with a soft and compliant surface, like in impact protection and cushioning. A gradient in the elastic properties can be built from a single material, varying gradually the bulk porosity of the material or its geometrical structure. However, if such a gradient is built into the material at production, damage or wearing over time might expose unwanted elastic properties. Here, we implement a design principle for a spatially inhomogeneous material based on topological band-theory for mechanical systems. The resulting inhomogeneity is stable against wearing and even cutting the material in half. We show how, by creating a periodic elastic material with topological properties, one can create an intrinsically polar behavior, where a face with a given surface normal is stiff while its opposing face is soft.
Elastic prolate spheroidal inclusion in an infinite elastic solid—an exact analysis of the inclusion stress by an engineering treatment of the problem based on the corresponding cavity solutions

Abstract:The paper demonstrates the analysis of the stress and strain states of an inhomogeneous structure with an axial symmetrical spheroidal inclusion in an infinite solid under a remote uniform tension load derived from the conditions of the theory of elasticity. With respect to the inhomogeneous structure, the deformations produce constraints that require a complete 3-dimensional analysis in the z , r -coordinate system. The solution generates the stress state of the inclusion and at the interface of the matrix. Spheroidal inclusions in an uniform outer tension stress field deform self-similarly to a rather elongated spheroid. With respect to the compatibility condition and depending on the different elastic moduli and Poisson's ratios in the inclusion and matrix, the solution procedure leads to a system of two linear equations with the magnitudes of the two tractions as unknowns. In this way, the solution is shortened to a twofold statically indeterminate system. The analysis performed leads to an exact solution of the general spheroidal problem in a formulation of stress concentration factors considering the different stiffness parameters of inclusion and matrix.

Abstract:Abstract Deformations of conventional solids are described via elasticity, a classical field theory whose form is constrained by translational and rotational symmetries. However, flexible metamaterials often contain an additional approximate symmetry due to the presence of a designer soft strain pathway. Here we show that low energy deformations of designer dilational metamaterials will be governed by a scalar field theory, conformal elasticity, in which the nonuniform, nonlinear deformations observed under generic loads correspond with the well-studied—conformal—maps. We validate this approach using experiments and finite element simulations and further show that such systems obey a holographic bulk-boundary principle, which enables an analytic method to predict and control nonuniform, nonlinear deformations. This work both presents a unique method of precise deformation control and demonstrates a general principle in which mechanisms can generate special classes of soft deformations.

Mathematical theory on dipolar resonances of hard inclusions within a soft elastic material

Abstract:The current study is motivated by the paper [Z. Liu, et al., {\it Science}, 289(5485), 2000], which investigates the incorporation of hard inclusions within a soft elastic matrix (HISE). The objective is to attain a negative mass density, which is caused by sub-wavelength dipolar resonances. This paper offers a comprehensive and mathematically rigorous understanding of the dipolar resonances within the HISE structure. Firstly, the original formula for the resonant frequencies of arbitrarily shaped hard inclusions is derived explicitly for the first time. Additionally, we demonstrate that the resonances arise due to the high contrast in Lamé parameters between various materials, while the sub-wavelength characteristics of the resonances are attributed to the significant disparities in material densities. Furthermore, the dipolar characterization of the resonances is rigorously justified. To validate our findings, we investigate resonant phenomena within a spherical geometry, offering both an alternative method for calculating resonant frequencies and a confirmation of the results presented in this paper.

Abstract:Stress-strain constitutive relations and Poisson's ratios are fundamental properties of naturally occurring materials, based on which their mechanical applications can be designed. The lack of tailorability and restricted margin for such critical properties severely limit the bounds of achievable multi-functional engineering designs using conventional materials. Through analytical and numerical analyses, supported by elementary-level physical experiments, we have proposed a kirigami-inspired hybrid metamaterial with programmable deformation-dependent stiffness and mixed-mode multidirectional auxeticity. The metamaterial can transition from a phase of low stiffness to a contact induced phase that brings forth an extensive rise in stiffness. Uniform and graded configurations of multi-layer tessellated material are developed to modulate the constitutive law of the metastructure with augmented programmability in two- and three-dimensional spaces. The proposed metamaterial will lead to extreme lightweight functional designs for impact resistance, shape morphing, multidirectional deformation, vibration and wave propagation control, where the capabilities of intrinsic material can be most optimally exploited.

Abstract:Within the framework of 2D or 3D linear elasticity, a general approach based on the superposition principle is proposed to study the problem of a finite elastic body with an arbitrarily shaped and located inclusion. The proposed approach consists in decomposing the initial inclusion problem into the problem of the inclusion embedded in the corresponding infinite body and the auxiliary problem of the finite body subjected to the appropriate boundary loading provided by solving the former problem. Thus, our approach renders it possible to circumvent the difficulty due to the unavailability of the relevant Green function, use various existing solutions for the problem of an inclusion inside an unbounded body and clearly makes appear the finite boundary effects. The general approach is applied and specified in the context of 2D isotropic elasticity. The complex potentials for the problem of an inclusion in an infinite body are given as two boundary integrals, and the boundary integral equation governing the complex potentials for the auxiliary problem is provided. In the important particular situation where a finite body with an arbitrarily shaped and located inclusion is circular, the exact explicit expressions for the complex potentials are derived, leading to those for the strain, stress and Eshelby’s tensor fields inside and outside the inclusion. These results are analytically detailed and numerically illustrated for the cases of a square inclusion placed concentrically, and a circular inclusion located eccentrically, inside a circular body.

Abstract:Abstract This work investigates the capabilities of anisotropic theory-based, purely data-driven and hybrid approaches to model the homogenized constitutive behavior of cubic lattice metamaterials exhibiting large deformations and buckling phenomena. The effective material behavior is assumed as hyperelastic, anisotropic and finite deformations are considered. A highly flexible analytical approach proposed by Itskov (Int J Numer Methods Eng 50(8): 1777–1799, 2001) is taken into account, which ensures material objectivity and fulfillment of the material symmetry group conditions. Then, two non-intrusive data-driven approaches are proposed, which are built upon artificial neural networks and formulated such that they also fulfill the objectivity and material symmetry conditions. Finally, a hybrid approach combing the approach of Itskov (Int J Numer Methods Eng 50(8): 1777–1799, 2001) with artificial neural networks is formulated. Here, all four models are calibrated with simulation data of the homogenization of two cubic lattice metamaterials at finite deformations. The data-driven models are able to reproduce the calibration data very well and reproduce the manifestation of lattice instabilities. Furthermore, they achieve superior accuracy over the analytical model also in additional test scenarios. The introduced hyperelastic models are formulated as general as possible, such that they can not only be used for lattice structures, but for any anisotropic hyperelastic material. Abstract:Flexoelectric solids exhibit promising applications due to their ability to generate electrical polarization in response to strain gradients. Nevertheless, inherent material defects, such as cavities, inhomogeneities, and inclusions, significantly impact the electromechanical coupling behavior of flexoelectric solids, thereby affecting the performance and lifespan of flexoelectric devices. Here, we present a systematic and detailed investigation of the anti-plane shear problems in flexoelectric solids encompassing circular cavities and inhomogeneities. Exact full-field solutions are derived for flexoelectric solids containing these defects under anti-plane shear at infinity. The study reveals that the out-of-plane polarization and strain gradient fields near the defects exhibit significant size dependence. Circular cavities and rigid circular inclusions exhibit contrasting effects on the surrounding electric polarization field. Moreover, strain gradient and flexoelectric effects will alter the stress concentration extent near cavities and inhomogeneities. Additionally, a mixed finite element simulation is conducted, and its high consistency with the analytical solution further validates the accuracy of this study. This research provides valuable insights into the anti-plane shear failure behavior of flexoelectric solids and establishes a foundation for studying more complex defects within flexoelectric materials.

Abstract:Elastomers filled with liquid inclusions -- as opposed to conventional solid fillers -- are a recent trend in the soft matter community because of their unique range of mechanical and physical properties. Such properties stem, in part, from the very large deformations that the underlying liquid inclusions are capable of undergoing. With the objective of advancing the understanding of the mechanics of this emerging class of materials, this paper presents a combined experimental/theoretical study of the nonlinear elastic deformation of initially spherical liquid inclusions embedded in elastomers that are subjected to quasistatic mechanical loads. The focus is on two fundamental problems, both within the limit regime when elasto-capillarity effects are negligible: ($i$) the problem of an isolated inclusion and ($ii$) that of a pair of closely interacting inclusions. Experimentally, specimens made of a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) elastomer filled with either isolated or pairs of initially spherical liquid glycerol inclusions are subjected to uniaxial tension. For the specimens with pairs of inclusions, three orientations of the two inclusions with respect to the direction of the applied macroscopic tensile load are considered, $0^\circ$, $45^\circ$, and $90^\circ$. The liquid glycerol is stained with a fluorescent dye that permits to measure the local deformation of the inclusions \emph{in situ} via confocal laser scanning fluorescent microscopy. Theoretically, a recently developed framework -- wherein the elastomer is considered to be a nonlinear elastic solid, the liquid comprising the inclusions is considered to be a nonlinear elastic fluid, and the interfaces separating the elastomer from the liquid inclusions can feature their own nonlinear elastic behavior (e.g., surface tension) -- is utilized to carry out full-field simulations of the experiments.

A Boundary Perturbation Analysis for Elastic Inclusions and Interfaces

Abstract:A first-order boundary perturbation method based on Muskhelishvilli's complex variable representations is formulated for the two-dimensional elasticity problem of a nearly-circular inclusion embedded in an infinite dissimilar material. Universal relations which are independent of loading conditions are established among the solutions for a homogeneous infinite plane, a perfectly-circular inclusion and a slightly-perturbed non-circular inclusion. It is shown that the solution to a circular inclusion can be constructed algebraically from that of an infinite homogeneous plane while the stress distribution along the interface circle leads to the perturbation solutions for a nearly-circular inclusion. Explicit results arc given for inclusions with smooth polygon shapes by considering cosine wavy perturbations along a reference circle. A similar analysts is carried out for a bimaterial interface whose shape deviates slightly from a straight line. Our perturbation results can be used to study elastically-induced morphological perturbations of surfaces, interfaces, voids, precipitates and inclusions in a stressed solid. As an example, we demonstrate that, under sufficiently large stresses, material surfaces become unstable against a range of diffusional perturbations bounded by two critical wavelengths. Also, as suggested from our perturbation analysis and verified by a finite element calculation, even slight surface undulation caused by an unstable morphological perturbation can result in substantial stress concentration along the surface, which may cause plastic deformation or brittle fracture before the bulk stress reaches a critical level.

Abstract:Mechanical metamaterials enable customizing the elastic properties of physical objects by altering their fine-scale structure. A broad gamut of effective material properties can be produced even from a single fabrication material by optimizing the geometry of a periodic microstructure tiling. Past work has extensively studied the capabilities of microstructures in the small-displacement regime, where periodic homogenization of linear elasticity yields computationally efficient optimal design algorithms. However, many applications involve flexible structures undergoing large deformations for which the accuracy of linear elasticity rapidly deteriorates due to geometric nonlinearities. Design of microstructures at finite strains involves a massive increase in computation and is much less explored; no computational tool yet exists to design metamaterials emulating target hyperelastic laws over finite regions of strain space. We make an initial step in this direction, developing algorithms to accelerate homogenization and metamaterial design for nonlinear elasticity and building a complete framework for the optimal design of planar metamaterials. Our nonlinear homogenization method works by efficiently constructing an accurate interpolant of a microstructure's deformation over a finite space of macroscopic strains likely to be endured by the metamaterial. From this interpolant, the homogenized energy density, stress, and tangent elasticity tensor describing the microstructure's effective properties can be inexpensively computed at any strain. Our design tool then fits the effective material properties to a target constitutive law over a region of strain space using a parametric shape optimization approach, producing a directly manufacturable geometry. We systematically test our framework by designing a catalog of materials fitting isotropic Hooke's laws as closely as possible. We demonstrate significantly improved accuracy over traditional linear metamaterial design techniques by fabricating and testing physical prototypes.

Resonant modes of two hard inclusions within a soft elastic material and their stress estimate

Abstract:In this paper, we are concerned with subwavelength resonant modes of two hard inclusions embedding in soft elastic materials to realize negative materials in elasticity. All the $12$ subwavelength resonant frequencies are derived explicitly for general convex resonators. In addition, the resonant modes are categorized into dipolar, quadrupolar, and hybrid groups, facilitating the effective realization of negative mass density, negative shear modulus and double-negative properties (both mass density and shear modulus) in elastic metamaterials. Moreover, we analyze the stress distribution between two hard inclusions when they are closely touching. We also precisely derive the sharp blow-up rates of the gradient estimates of the resonant modes. Our findings show that certain resonant modes have bounded stress estimates when the curvature of the hard inclusions is appropriately designed. These results provide valuable insights into the stability of the design and fabrication of elastic metamaterials. Lastly, we express the scattering wave fields explicitly in terms of resonant modes, offering a clear understanding of their impact on the overall scattering behavior.

Abstract:This work showcases a novel phenomenological method to create predictive simulations of metallic lattice structures. The samples were manufactured via laser powder bed fusion (LPBF). Simulating LPBF-manufactured metamaterials accurately presents a challenge. The printed geometry is different from the CAD geometry the lattice is based on. The reasons are intrinsic limitations of the printing process, which cause defects such as pores or rough surfaces. These differences result in material behavior that depends on the surface/volume ratio. To create predictive simulations, this work introduces an approach to setup a calibrated simulation based on a combination of experimental force data and local displacements obtained via global Digital Image Correlation (DIC). The displacement fields are measured via Finite Element based DIC and yield the true local deformation of the structure. By exploiting symmetries of the geometry, a simplified parametrized simulation model is created. The simulation is calibrated via Response Surface Methodology based on nodal displacements from FE-DIC combined with the experimental force/displacement data. This method is used to create a simulation of an anti-tetrachiral, auxetic structure. The transferability and accuracy are discussed, as well as the possible extension into 3D space.

Abstract:In addition to the hexagonal crystals of class 6 mm, many piezoelectric materials (e.g., BaTiO3), piezomagnetic materials (e.g., CoFe2O4), and multiferroic composite materials (e.g., BaTiO3-CoFe2O4 composites) also exhibit symmetry of transverse isotropy after poling, with the isotropic plane perpendicular to the poling direction. In this paper, simple and elegant line-integral expressions are derived for extended displacements, extended stresses, self-energy, and interaction energy of arbitrarily shaped, three-dimensional (3D) dislocation loops with a constant extended Burgers vector in transversely isotropic magneto-electro-elastic (MEE) bimaterials (i.e., joined half-spaces). The derived solutions can also be simply reduced to those expressions for piezoelectric, piezomagnetic, or purely elastic materials. Several numerical examples are given to show both the multi-field coupling effect and the interface/surface effect in transversely isotropic MEE materials.

Abstract:An accurate analytical method has been proposed to solve for stress in a half plane containing a finite array of elliptic inclusions, the last being a model of near-surface zone of the fibrous composite part. The method combines the Muskhelishvili’s method of complex potentials with the Fourier integral transform technique. By accurate satisfaction of all the boundary conditions, a primary boundary-value elastostatics problem for a piece-homogeneous domain has been reduced to an ordinary well-posed set of linear algebraic equations. A properly chosen form of potentials provides a remarkably simple form of equations and thus an efficient computational algorithm. The theory developed is rather general and can be applied to solve a variety of elastostatics problems. Up to several hundred interacting inclusions can be considered in this way in practical simulations which makes the model of composite half plane realistic and flexible enough to account for the microstructure statistics. The stress concentration factors and effective thermoelastic properties of random structure composites with dilute concentration of fibers are estimated in the vicinity of a free edge. The numerical examples are given showing accuracy and numerical efficiency of the developed method and disclosing the way and extent to which the nearby free or loaded boundary influences the local and mean stress concentration in the fibrous composite.

A way to hypo-elastic artificial materials without a strain potential and displaying flutter instability

Abstract:Cauchy-elastic solids include hyper-elasticity and a subset of elastic materials for which the stress does not follow from a scalar strain potential. More in general, hypo-elastic materials are only defined incrementally and comprise Cauchy-elasticity. Infringement of the hyper-elastic 'dogma' is so far unattempted and normally believed to be impossible, as it apparently violates thermodynamics, because energy may be produced in closed strain cycles. Contrary to this belief, we show that non-hyper-elastic behavior is possible and we indicate the way to a practical realization of this new concept. In particular, a design paradigm is established for artificial materials where follower forces, so far ignored in homogenization schemes, are introduced as loads prestressing an elastic two-dimensional grid made up of linear elastic rods (reacting to elongation, flexure and shear). A rigorous application of Floquet-Bloch wave asymptotics yields an unsymmetric acoustic tensor governing the \textit{incremental} dynamics of the effective material. The latter is therefore the incremental response of a hypo-elastic solid, which does not follow from a strain potential and thus does not belong to hyper-elasticity. Through the externally applied follower forces (which could be originated via interaction with a fluid, or gas, or by application of Coulomb friction, or non-holonomic constraints), the artificial material may adsorb/release energy from/to the environment and therefore produce energy in a closed strain loop, without violating any rule of thermodynamics. The solid is also shown to display flutter, a material instability corresponding to a Hopf bifurcation, which was advocated as possible in plastic solids, but never experimentally found and so far believed to be impossible in elasticity.

Abstract:Localized deformations in materials and structures are usually due to instability and are sensitive to various stochastic imperfections introduced during either the manufacturing processes or in-service life. As a result, they always occur in an uncertain manner. In this study, a two dimensional bistable cellular mechanical metamaterial (CMM) is designed, showing highly ordered localized deformation under static loading. The metamaterial consists of periodically distributed elliptical holes of dual sizes. By varying the geometrical parameters of the holes, the CMM can be monostable or bistable. The responses of the CMM to uniaxial compression are systematically explored by finite element (FE) simulations. It is shown that the monostable CMM can have either positive or negative Poisson's ratio and undergo homogeneous deformation up to moderate uniaxial compression. However, the bistable CMM has negligible Poisson's ratio and, most interestingly, shows highly ordered localized deformation zones, similar to the multi-soliton feature in fluids and physics. Based upon the unit cell of the CMM, a simplified spring chain model is developed. In the continuum limit, the model reduces to the Klein–Gordon equation. Analytical trivial solution and kink–antikink solution of the spring chain model are obtained. They are found to faithfully capture the FE simulated homogeneous deformation of the monostable CMM and the ordered localized deformations of the bistable CMM. The findings can provide insight into the ordered localized deformation, phase transformation, and static topological soliton of mechanical metamaterials.

Abstract:With the purpose of investigating a linear elastic solid containing a dilute distribution of cylindrical and prismatic holes parallel to the torsion axis, the full-field solution for an infinite elastic plane containing a single void and subject to torsion is derived. The obtained solution is exploited to derive the analytic expressions for the Stress Concentration Factor (SCF) related to the presence of an elliptical hole, for the Stress Intensity Factor (SIF) for hypocycloidal-shaped hole and star-shaped cracks, and for the Notch Stress Intensity Factor (NSIF) for star-shaped polygons. Special sets of the void location are obtained for which peculiar mechanical behaviours are displayed, such as the stress annihilation at some points along the boundary of elliptical voids and the stress singularity removal at the cusps/points of hypocycloidal shaped/isotoxal star-shaped polygonal voids. By means of finite element simulations it is finally shown that the presented closed-form expressions for the stress intensification provide reliable predictions even for finite domain realizations and, in particular, the infinite-plane solution remains highly accurate when the size of smooth and non-smooth external boundary is greater than twice and five times the void dimension, respectively. Under these geometrical conditions, the derived analytical expressions represent a valid 'guide tool' in mechanical design.
