Abstract:BACKGROUND: The development of new and innovative materials such as high performance polymers (PEEK) opens a wide therapeutic range in implant prostheses. They are presented as alternative materials to metal and zirconium alloys in the manufacture of structures and attachments for implant prostheses and fixed and removable dental substitutes. The objective of this review is to know the characteristics of this material and thus assess its advantages and disadvantages in its possible applications in prostheses on dental implants.MATERIAL AND METHODS: A bibliographic search was carried out through the PubMed and Scopus search engines, of articles published from 2007 to 2020, excluding all articles in which PEEK was used for tooth prostheses. The data on the sufficiency of the PEEK material were organized according to its chemical, physical and mechanical properties.RESULTS: 148 articles were found in the databases using as keywords; Polyetheretherketone; PEEK; BioHPP; healing abutments; dental prostheses; dental prosthodontics; Full-arch rehabilitation; fixed implant prosthodontics; implant-retained prostheses; implant prostheses.CONCLUSIONS: It is concluded that PEEK offers greater lightness, good aesthetics, biocompatibility, and an elastic modulus more similar to bone than other materials commonly used in implant prostheses; however, it presents a higher risk of fracture and abrasion. More long-term clinical studies will be necessary to advise its use in implant prostheses. Abstract:Abstract Background Advanced computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) technology led to the introduction of an increasing number of machinable materials suitable for dental prostheses. One of these materials is polyetheretherketone (PEEK), a high performance polymer recently used in dentistry with favorable physical, mechanical and chemical properties. The purpose of this study was to review the current published literature on the use of PEEK for the fabrication of dental prostheses with CAD-CAM techniques. Methods Electronic database searches were performed using the terms “PEEK”, “CAD-CAM”, “dental”, “dentistry” to identify studies related to the use of PEEK for the fabrication of CAD-CAM prostheses. The search period spanned from January 1990 through February 2020. Both in vivo and in vitro studies in English were eligible. Review articles and the references of the included publications were searched to identify relevant articles. Results A great number of in vitro studies are available in the current literature pointing out the noticeable properties of PEEK. The use of PEEK has been recommended for a wide range of CAD-CAM fabricated fixed and removable dental prostheses. PEEK was additionally recommended for occlusal splints, intra-radicular posts, implant abutments, customized healing abutments and provisional restorations. However, only a few clinical studies were identified. Conclusions PEEK could be considered as a viable alternative for CAD-CAM fixed and removable dental prostheses to well-established dental materials. Due to the scarcity of clinical data, clinical trials are needed to assess the long-term performance of PEEK prostheses.

Mechanical Response of PEKK and PEEK As Frameworks for Implant-Supported Full-Arch Fixed Dental Prosthesis: 3D Finite Element Analysis

Abstract:Abstract Objective Polymeric framework represent an innovative approach for implant-supported dental prostheses. However, the mechanical response of ultra-high performance polymers as frameworks for full-arch prostheses under the “all-on-four concept” remains unclear. The present study applied finite element analysis to examine the behavior of polyetherketoneketone (PEKK) and polyetheretherketone (PEEK) prosthetic frameworks. Materials and Methods A three-dimensional maxillary model received four axially positioned morse-taper implants, over which a polymeric bar was simulated. The full-arch prosthesis was created from a previously reported database model, and the imported geometries were divided into a mesh composed of nodes and tetrahedral elements in the analysis software. The materials were assumed as isotropic, elastic, and homogeneous, and all contacts were considered bonded. A normal load (500 N magnitude) was applied at the occlusal surface of the first left molar after the model was fixed at the base of the cortical bone. The microstrain and von-Mises stress were selected as criteria for analysis. Results Similarities in the mechanical response were observed in both framework for the peri-implant tissue, as well as for stress generated in the implants (263–264 MPa) and abutments (274–273 MPa). The prosthetic screw and prosthetic base concentrated more stress with PEEK (211 and 58 MPa, respectively) than with PEKK (192 and 49 MPa), while the prosthetic framework showed the opposite behavior (59 MPa for PEEK and 67 MPa for PEKK). Conclusion The main differences related to the mechanical behavior of PEKK and PEEK frameworks for full-arch prostheses under the “all-on-four concept” were reflected in the prosthetic screw and the acrylic base. The superior shock absorbance of PEKK resulted in a lower stress concentration on the prosthetic screw and prosthetic base. This would clinically represent a lower fracture risk on the acrylic base and screw loosening. Conversely, lower stress concentration was observed on PEEK frameworks.

Abstract:PEEK composite was tested mechanically as a maxillary removable partial denture (RPD) framework material instead of cast cobalt chromium alloy. Methods: Partial edentulous upper jaw cast was scanned using structured-light 3D scanner, palatal strap (PS) designs for RPD were designed by a designing dental laboratory software. CAD/CAM machine fabricated PSs patterns using their designs’ STL software files. PSs were made from poly-ether-ether ketone (PEEK) reinforced by ceramic fillers using thermal injection press technique and Co-Cr alloy using centrifugal casting, each material group was subdivided into two subgroups according to storage conditions (stored and non-stored subgroups), storage took place in deionized water for about 180 days at 37.5 ± 2 o C. All specimens were subjected to fracture resistance test using universal testing machine then maximum compression load (MCL) result values were subjected to statistical analysis. PEEK composite specimens were scanned by field emission microscope (FEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy. Storage water of PEEK composite was analyzed using atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). Results: In either stored or non-stored subgroups of PEEK composite straps they showed significant lower mean MCL values than corresponding alloy subgroups (p=0.0001). FEM scanning showed fillers agglomerations in non-stored PEEK composite and their nearly absence from stored PEEK composite specimens. AAS detected Al element in PEEK composite storage water. Conclusion: Mechanically thermally injected ceramic reinforced PEEK composite could not replace cast Co-Cr alloy as PSs material for maxillary RPD. Biocompatibility concerns raised in this study due to suspected Al leaching and ceramic fillers dissolution from PEEK composite matrix.
The Effects of using PEEK Coping and Different Restorative Materials on the Stress Distribution in Tooth and Implant- supported Prostheses under Static Loading: 3D FEA

Abstract:Purpose: This study was designed to evaluate the influence of utilizing Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) coping and three different dental restorative materials in the success of tooth and implant-supported fixed partial dentures (TISFPD) in the maxillary posterior region, under static loading by 3-Dimensional Finite Element Analysis (3D FEA). Materials and methods: Six 3D FEA models were designed assuming the extraction of maxillary first and second molars. Bone, implant, abutment, PEEK coping, second premolar, periodontal ligament (PDL) and six 3-unit TISFPD with different restorative materials [Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal (PFM), PEEK-Composite (PC), Monolithic Zirconia (MZ)] were modeled. Then, PEEK copings were modeled to be cemented onto the implants as a double-crown system for the first three groups (PFMPEEK, PCPEEK and MZPEEK) whereas, the next three groups (PFM, PC, MZ) excluded a PEEK coping in their designs. The prostheses were loaded twice, vertically and obliquely. From the determined points, 250 N for vertical loading (0o to the long axis) and 200 N for the oblique loading (30o to the long axis) were applied. Von Mises tension, maximum and minimum principal tension value criterias were analyzed. Results: Regardless of the material used for suprastructure, the maximum average stress was reduced by using PEEK coping. Considering the maximum stress distribution, PC appeared to have the highest stresses on the cortical bone, implant and screw. Additionally, the von Mises stresses formed in the PDL for each model were lower when PEEK coping was included in the design of the TISFPD, reducing the risk of intrusion. Conclusions: The stress distribution was positively affected by the PEEK coping in TISFPD design, reducing bone resorption and failure. This elastic material used generated lower stresses in the bone and implant, while no significant effect was found on stresses around natural teeth.

Abstract:Fixed prostheses are appropriate treatment solutions for edentulous patients. In fixed prostheses, following "All on four", titanium frameworks are commonly used to support the implants. However, the limitations of titanium have prompted researchers to search for alternative materials (e.g. polymers). This study applied finite element investigation to evaluate the stress distribution in the parts of fixed prosthesis and the surrounding bone tissue, using polymeric frameworks in place of titanium, and different densities of spongy bone. As, the success of fixed prosthesis was predicted to be influenced also by bone quality, particularly spongy bone density. Fixed prosthesis was constructed on edentulous mandible, then different frameworks (CFR-PEEK 60%, CFR-PEEK 30%, PEKK, and PEEK) were stimulated instead of titanium, under 300N unilateral and bilateral forces. Three densities of spongy bone were stimulated which are normal, low and high. The choice of framework material depended on the density of spongy bone. Moreover, PEEK framework showed the lowest stress values on bone tissues and the highest stress values on mucosa. All frameworks could be used in the fixed prosthesis, in the cases of normal and high densities of spongy bone. In low-density case, soft frameworks (PEKK and PEEK) were recommended to reduce the stresses generated on bone tissues.

Abstract:Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) has been widely applied in fixed dental prostheses, comprising crowns, fixed partial dentures, and post-and-core. PEEK's excellent mechanical properties facilitate better stress distribution than conventional materials, protecting the abutment teeth. However, the stiffness of PEEK is not sufficient, which can be improved via fiber reinforcement. PEEK is biocompatible. It is nonmutagenic, noncytotoxic, and nonallergenic. However, the chemical stability of PEEK is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, PEEK is nondegradable and intraoral corrosion is minimized. On the other hand, the inert surface makes adhesive bonding difficult. Numerous strategies for improving the adhesive properties of PEEK have been explored, including acid etching, plasma treatment, airborne particle abrasion, laser treatment, and adhesive systems.

Abstract:S Tekin, Y Değer, F Demirci Nigerian Journal of Clinical Practice 2019 22(9):1252-1258 Aims: The purpose of this study is to compare the stresses occurring in the peri-implant bones, implants, crowns, abutments, and screws after loading through finite element analysis by using the poly-ether-ether-ketone (PEEK) materials, which are alternative to titanium abutment and metal supported restorations and to try to reduce the level of neck resorption. Materials and Methods: In our study, three-dimensional modeling of 2 PEEK and titanium abutments, metal-ceramic, and monolithic PEEK upper central dental restorations were made on four titanium implants (Biohorizons® Implant Systems Ins., Birmingham, AL, USA) with diameters of 3.8 mm and 10.5 mm and four groups were obtained. Then, a stress analysis of the finite element was performed by applying a 178 N oblique force of 45° to the long axis of the tooth 2 mm below the incisal edge of the model's palatal surface. Results: It has been observed that the PEEK material reduces the stresses caused by the force applied on itself during all tests. In all groups, PEEK abutments and PEEK crowns have reduced stress on the abutment. The most significant difference is observed in the stresses on the crowns and screws. When the stresses on the crown are examined, the use of PEEK crown reduces the stresses on itself and the use of PEEK abutment increases the stresses on the crown. Conclusions: The stress on the implant system can be changed through the usage of different prosthetic materials.

Abstract:Purpose . To present a digital method that combines intraoral and face scanning for the computer-assisted design/computer-assisted manufacturing (CAD/CAM) fabrication of implant-supported bars for maxillary overdentures. Methods . Over a 2-year period, all patients presenting to a private dental clinic with a removable complete denture in the maxilla, seeking rehabilitation with implants, were considered for inclusion in this study. Inclusion criteria were fully edentulous maxilla, functional problems with the preexisting denture, opposing dentition, and sufficient bone volume to insert four implants. Exclusion criteria were age < 55 years, need for bone augmentation, uncompensated diabetes mellitus, immunocompromised status, radio- and/or chemotherapy, and previous treatment with oral and/or intravenous aminobisphosphonates. All patients were rehabilitated with a maxillary overdenture supported by a CAD/CAM polyether-ether-ketone (PEEK) implant-supported bar. The outcomes of the study were the passive fit/adaptation of the bar, the 1-year implant survival, and the success rates of the implant-supported overdentures. Results . 15 patients (6 males, 9 females; mean age 68.8 ± 4.7 years ) received 60 implants and were rehabilitated with a maxillary overdenture supported by a PEEK bar, designed and milled from an intraoral digital impression. The intraoral scans were integrated with face scans, in order to design each bar with all available patient data (soft tissues, prosthesis, implants, and face) in the correct spatial position. When testing the 3D-printed resin bar, 12 bars out of 15 (80%) had a perfect passive adaptation and fit; in contrast, 3 out of 15 (20%) did not have a sufficient passive fit or adaptation. No implants were lost, for a 1-year survival of 100% (60/60 surviving implants). However, some complications (two fixtures with peri-implantitis in the same patient and two repaired overdentures in two different patients) occurred. This determined a 1-year success rate of 80% for the implant-supported overdenture. Conclusions . In this study, the combination of intraoral and face scans allowed to successfully restore fully edentulous patients with maxillary overdentures supported by 4 implants and a CAD/CAM PEEK bar. Further studies are needed to confirm these outcomes.

Abstract:PURPOSE: Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is a polymer that has many potential uses in dentistry. The aim of this review was to summarize the outcome of research conducted on the material for dental applications. In addition, future prospects of PEEK in the field of clinical dentistry have been highlighted.STUDY SELECTION: An electronic search was carried out via the PubMed (Medline) database using keywords 'polyetheretherketone', 'dental' and 'dentistry' in combination. Original research papers published in English language in last fifteen year were considered. The studies relevant to our review were critically analyzed and summarized.RESULTS: PEEK has been explored for a number of applications for clinical dentistry. For example, PEEK dental implants have exhibited lesser stress shielding compared to titanium dental implants due to closer match of mechanical properties of PEEK and bone. PEEK is a promising material for a number of removable and fixed prosthesis. Furthermore, recent studies have focused improving the bioactivity of PEEK implants at the nanoscale.CONCLUSION: Considering mechanical and physical properties similar to bone, PEEK can be used in many areas of dentistry. Improving the bioactivity of PEEK dental implants without compromising their mechanical properties is a major challenge. Further modifications and improving the material properties may increase its applications in clinical dentistry.

Abstract:Purpose: This current numerical investigation aim to evaluate the benefits of substituting Titanium with CRF- PEEK for better stress distribution in implant- bone interface. Methods: 3D models of a dental implant for the first mandibular molar were constructed using the computed tomography (CT) scan. Four distinct models using a combination of titanium, carbon reinforced polyetheretherketone (CRF- PEEK), and zirconia for implant /abutment materials were studied. A three- dimensional finite element simulation was used to evaluate the stress distribution at the implant – bone interface under a compressive axial load of magnitude 120 N. A spherical indenter was used to simulate occlusal load. Results: Mesh independent study was converged for a very large number of elements. Finite element analysis showed: 1) there was no significant difference in the distribution pattern of stress at the implant – bone interface in the different material models studied, 2) the stress values for all prosthetic implant parts were well below the yield strength, 3) a larger deformation of PEEK implant versus titanium. Conclusion: The substitution of titanium with PEEK for the implant does not provide any better stress distribution and may lead to problems from the deformation of the implant.
Retention Evaluation of Implant-Supported Palateless Maxillary Overdentures Retained by PEEK Telescopic Attachment

Abstract:Background: Retention and stabilization of implant-supported overdenture is associated with more patient satisfaction, chewing capability, and oral health-related quality of life. There are a variety of implant retention systems which can be utilized to retain an implant overdenture. Telescopic attachments provide excellent retention resulting from friction. Objective: This study evaluates the retention force and fatigue resistance of ready-made polyether ether ketone (PEEK) telescopic attachment in different numbers and positions of dental implants in palateless maxillary overdenture. Method: Five edentulous maxillary models were fabricated from cold-cure poly methyl methacrylate resin. The study models were divided into two groups; the first group (3-implant supported overdenture) and the second group (4-implant supported overdenture). Each group is subdivided into subgroups according to the different implant positions. One palateless maxillary denture was constructed over each model. Ready-made PEEK telescope attachments correspond to implant abutments embedded in the inner surface of these overdentures. Initial anterior, posterior, and central retention values of overdentures were estimated and compared with the retention after 540 cycles of insertion and removal using a digital force gauge. One-way ANOVA testing was used to compare the means of the models of group one, an Independent sample t-test was used to compare the means of the models of group two, and a comparison of retention value between the groups and Paired sample t-test was applied for determining the difference between initial and secondary retention value (p<0.05). Results: The anterior retention value was significantly decreased when the dental implants were placed distally while the posterior and central retention values were significantly increased. Also, retention value increased as implant number increased; the lowest mean retention values were recorded with Group one and the highest values were with Group two. The final retention value was significantly decreased after 540 times insertion and removal. However, the values of secondary retention are still larger than the minimum retention value that was reported (5–7 N) to achieve sufficient patient satisfaction. Conclusion: The implant location and number affect the retention value of palateless maxillary overdenture. Continuous insertion and removal of the prosthesis for daily hygiene practice lead to decreases in retention values.

Abstract:Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is a thermoplastic material widely used in engineering applications due to its good biomechanical properties and high temperature stability. Compared to traditional metal and ceramic dental materials, PEEK dental implants exhibit less stress shielding, thus better matching the mechanical properties of bone. As a promising medical material, PEEK can be used as implant abutments, removable and fixed prostheses, and maxillofacial prostheses. It can be blended with materials such as fibers and ceramics to improve its mechanical strength for better clinical dental applications. Compared to conventional pressed and CAD/CAM milling fabrication, 3D-printed PEEK exhibits excellent flexural and tensile strength and parameters such as printing temperature and speed can affect its mechanical properties. However, the bioinert nature of PEEK can make adhesive bonding difficult. The bond strength can be improved by roughening or introducing functional groups on the PEEK surface by sandblasting, acid etching, plasma treatment, laser treatment, and adhesive systems. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the research progress on the mechanical properties of PEEK for dental applications in the context of specific applications, composites, and their preparation processes. In addition, the research on the adhesive properties of PEEK over the past few years is highlighted. Thus, this review aims to build a conceptual and practical toolkit for the study of the mechanical and adhesive properties of PEEK materials. More importantly, it provides a rationale and a general new basis for the application of PEEK in the dental field.

Abstract:Implant prostheses and other fixed and removable metal prostheses have led to an increase in demand for the development of new and efficient materials such as high-performance polymers polyetheretherketone (PEEK) over titanium and other metals because of their further complications in the human body. PEEK is a polymer that is nontoxic and has a modulus of elasticity that is comparable to that of human bone. PEEK implants provide benefits over metal implants, such as reducing the stress shielding effect, simple processing, and color resemblance to natural teeth. And it is a fantastic alternative to titanium for dental and orthopedic implants. The current review is undertaken to understand the properties of this PEEK material to weigh its benefits and drawbacks for potential use in dental implants and other prostheses.
Clinical application of 3D-printed PEEK implants for repairing mandibular defects

Abstract:The aim of this study was to investigate and discuss the efficacy of 3D-printed PEEK implants in personalized reconstruction of mandibular segmental defects. This study was a single-center case series. Six patients who underwent mandibular reconstruction with a custom-made 3D-printed PEEK implant were enrolled. Patient demographics, photographs, computed tomography (CT), and other clinical data were collected and analyzed pre- and postoperatively. The average patient age was 60.0 ± 15.09 years. The mean operative time was 213.33 ± 30.77 min, and the postoperative follow-up time ranged from 10 to 24 months. Mandibular segmental defects ranged from the symphysis to the condyle. Five patients did not have any postoperative complications and were satisfied with the cosmetic and functional results. One patient had to undergo removal of the PEEK implant because of implant exposure at 10 months after surgery. PEEK implants can repair different forms of defect in the mandible, maintaining the original shape of the mandible, whilst not affecting mandible functions, such as mastication and temporomandibular joint movement. However, PEEK implantation requires the strict selection of appropriate indications, especially with regard to the evaluation of soft-tissue conditions in the implanted area.

Abstract:Abstract The commercialisation of polyetheretherketone (PEEK) of polyaryletherketone family paved for the new development in the medical field, especially in dentistry. The high performance and better bioavailability, biocompatibility and strength all together made this material a replacement for laboratory technicians to switch from conventional metallic and zirconium alloys to PEEK. The objective is to know the general characteristics, mechanical and chemical properties and various uses of PEEK in dentistry and the use of PEEK in implant prosthodontics. Various modifications of PEEK like Carbon fiber reinforced (CFR-PEEK) and Glass fiber reinforced (GFR-PEEK) were discovered to replace unreinforced PEEK due to its better physical and mechanical properties. The various applications of PEEK are also a main objective. PEEK has replaced titanium in implant dentistry because of its better tensile strength and its elastic modulus which is close to the dentin. The advantages and disadvantages of PEEK in dental implant prosthesis are also considered.

Abstract:Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is a very powerful biomaterial that is increasingly used in dentistry. It has superior properties, which make it desirable in implantology. The applications of PEEK include finger prosthesis, RPD and FPD framework, and dental implants. Changes in the production of polyketone-based materials have been made to ensure consistent production of polymers for medical applications. PEEK is a high-performance semicrystalline material that has physical properties such as high resilience and strength. It is a tooth-colored material, making it desirable for its aesthetic appearance. Traditional manufacturing methods like injection molding, extrusion, and compression molding are used for PEEK. Despite the high price of the polymer, the additional value that PEEK materials bring by offering the possibility of manufacturing parts include lightweight, strength or toughness and able to survive longer in harsh environments. PEEK has trauma or shock cancelling abilities, fracture resisting abilities, stress distributing ability, osseointegrating abilities, With such great qualities PEEK has an increased demand in the market, and this biomaterial never failes to surprise with its amazing success rate. Even in dentistry PEEK has a wide range of applications which includes, as a dental implants biomaterial, prosthetic material, abutment material, post and core material, crowns, removable partial denture framework. With such a huge range of applications PEEK is said to have been providing an all in one package for dentistry. PEEK biomaterial shows great compatibility with bioactive materials which has proven to be of great help to mankind as not only it is involved in life sciences but also in automotives and aerodynamics as well. The main motto of this review is to know the qualities and the properties of PEEK as a capable implant prosthesis for its application focusing on dental implants. This review tells us about the challenges faced when using this material and benefits and advantages of this biomaterial.
Comparative Evaluation of BioHPP and Titanium As a Framework Veneered with Composite Resin for Implant-Supported Fixed Dental Prostheses

Abstract:Statement of problem. High rates of veneering chipping are a common prosthodontic complication of restorations with a titanium framework. A new bio high-performance polymer (BioHPP) based on polyetheretherketone (PEEK) has been introduced for denture superstructures. Clinical reports suggest that BioHPP could be used as an alternative framework material to support complete-arch restorations. However, peer-reviewed information is lacking regarding the performance of BioHPP as a framework material for implant-supported screw-retained fixed dental prostheses (FDPs) veneered with composite resin. Purpose. The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate and compare the bond strength of modified PEEK (BioH HP) and titanium with a veneering composite resin and compare the marginal fit and fracture resistance of implant-supported screw-retained FDPs fabricated by using computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) frameworks veneered with composite resin. Material and methods. A composite resin was bonded to 2 framework materials (n=20/group): pure titanium (Ti) and BioHPP (Bi). The shear bond strength (SBS) was determined after 24-hour wet storage. Furthermore, 20 3-unit CAD-CAM BioHPP and titanium frameworks were fabricated (n=10/ group). The marginal fit between frameworks and abutments was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy by using the single-screw test. After thermocycling and mastication simulation, the fracture resistance of FDPs veneered with the composite resin was examined. The independent sample t test was used to evaluate differences (alpha=.05). Results. Significantly higher shear bond strengths were obtained in group Bi (31.1 +/- 3.5 MPa) than in group Ti (20.5 +/- 1.8 MPa). The mean marginal gap width was 19 +/- 4 mu m in group Bi and 16 +/- 6 mu m in group Ti. Statistical tests showed no significant differences (P>.05). After loading, veneering chipping was observed at a load of 1960 +/- 233 N in group Ti. Although the BioHPP frameworks fractured at 1518 +/- 134 N, no chipping occurred. Conclusions. The bond strength of BioHPP with the composite resin was greater than that of titanium. CAD-CAM BioHPP frameworks exhibit good marginal fit and fracture resistance. BioHPP may be a suitable alternative to metal as a framework to be veneered with composite resin.

Abstract:PURPOSE:To explore the clinical application of one-piece polyetheretherketone (PEEK) removable partial dentures (RPDs) fabricated using a novel digital workflow and to evaluate their weights and fits in vivo and patient satisfaction. MATERIALS AND METHODS:Fifteen cases with posterior partially edentulous situations were selected, and each patient received two types of RPDs, including a novel digital workflow (test group) and a conventional workflow (control group). For the test group, one-piece RPDs were designed through three-dimensional (3D) methods by scanning stone casts and fabricated by milling PEEK discs. Each RPD was weighed. The gaps between the oral tissue and RPDs in each group were duplicated using a polyvinylsiloxane (PVS) replica and measured by 3D analysis. A visual analog scale (VAS) was used to evaluate the patient's satisfaction. Paired t-tests were used to compare the differences in the weight, the gaps of each RPD, and VAS values between the two groups. One-way analysis of variance tests was used to compare the differences in the gap among different components in each group. RESULTS:The RPD in the test group weighed less than that in the control group (p < 0.01). No statistically significant differences in the gaps of denture bases and rests (p > 0.05) were found between the two groups, but the gaps of major connectors in the test group were significantly smaller than in the control group (p < 0.05). The VAS scores for comfortableness and masticatory efficiency were not significantly different between the two groups (p > 0.05) but the scores for the aesthetic appearance of the clasps in the test group were significantly higher than that in the control group (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS:One-piece PEEK RPDs manufactured using a novel digital workflow weighed less than conventional RPDs and exhibited a clinically acceptable internal fit. Although the aesthetic appearance of the PEEK clasps was superior to the control, there is still room for improvement.

Abstract:Radionuclide venography (RNV) of the pelvis and lower extremity veins using /sup 99/Tc-albumin microspheres was performed in 53 patients with pulmonary emboli or venous disease. In 25 patients who underwent both contrast radiography and RNV studies, there were no false-positive studies and one false-negative. In this series the accuracy of RNV exceeded that of Doppler alone. When the results of these two methods were combined, falsenegative studies were eliminated. Over half the patients with pulmonary emboli and clinically normal lower extremities had abnormal RNV studies. The exact method of thrombus localization is not known but both mechanical and electrostatic factors may be involved. RNV has been shown to be a safe, accurate, and easily performed examination that is particularly useful in evaluating patients with pulmonary emboli. (auth)
