Abstract:A nature-inspired water-cycling system, akin to trees, to perform effective water and solar energy management for photosynthesis and transpiration is considered to be a promising strategy to solve water scarcity issues globally. However, challenges remain in terms of the relatively low transport rate, short transport distance, and unsatisfactory extraction efficiency. Herein, enlightened by conifer tracheid construction, an efficient water transport and evaporation system composed of a hierarchical structured aerogel is reported. This architecture with radially aligned channels, micron pores, and molecular meshes is realized by applying a radial ice-template method and in situ cryopolymerization technique. This nature-inspired design benefits the aerogel excellent capillary rise performance, realizing a long-distance (>28 cm at 190 min) and quick (>1 cm at 1 s, >9 cm at 300 s) antigravity water transport on a macroscopic scale, regardless of clean water, seawater, sandy groundwater, or dye-including effluent. Furthermore, an efficient water transpiration and collection is performed by the bilayer-structured aerogel with a carbon heat collector on an aerogel top, demonstrating a solar steam generation rate of 2.0 kg m(-2) h(-1) with the energy conversion efficiency up to 85.7% under one solar illumination. This biomimetic design with the advantage of water transport and evaporation provides a potential approach to realize water purification, regeneration, and desalination.

Abstract:The shortage of fresh water resources is becoming more and more serious, which endangers human survival and social progress. Atmospheric water harvesting technology is expected to be one of the ideal ways to break through this predicament. However, in the special circumstances such as offshore place or island, the equipment of atmospheric water harvesting is required not only to have good capture ability of water molecules, but also to have the advantages of stable performance, low energy consumption, and simply employment. We designed and prepared a composite of microtube-filled vesicle-like PEDOT wrapped into honeycomb chitosan by vaper-phase polymerization. Under the static adsorption, it reaches high water molecules uptake of 154.0 wt% at 98% relative humidity, and captured water molecules aggregate into droplets to achieve the direct collection without any external force. Moreover, this composite has low density and good stability under high humidity, which indicates its promising application for atmospheric water harvesting in the coastal and offshore areas.
Rainwater Harvest with Desert-Sand Bricks: An Adaptive Water Resources Management Strategy for Climate Change

Abstract:Urbanization causes many changes to the hydrological cycle, affecting radiation flux, precipitation amount, water evaporation and evapotranspiration, and soil infiltration. This study presents an adaptive strategy to efficiently use rainwater and promote sustainable urban development: using desert sand to construct a permeable brick with intensive compressive strength, high water permeability, and low fabrication costs. Two water-permeable holes are included in the brick to allow rainwater infiltration and maintenance of the permeable pavement. Experimental results show that the mean compressive strength of the desert-sand bricks is 69.6 MPa (2.3 times the strength required by the industry standard JC/T 945–2005) and the maximum compressive strength is 102.8 MPa (3.4 times the industry standard). The fabrication cost of the water-permeable brick designed by the authors is only 12 US dollars/m 2 , a lower cost than the existing sand-based permeable bricks on the market. This kind of permeable brick may render substantial economic benefits and ecological improvements. The results of this study are used to present an adaptive management approach to climate change that highlights innovation, cost-efficiency, and sustainability.

Abstract:The vast reservoirs of atmospheric freshwater have been investigated for their potential to provide a sustainable water supply with the right water sorbent material to satisfy water requirements in dry regions. Here, this study offers a technique for creating a solar-powered polymer hygroscopic aerogel for atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) with an MXene solar absorber. This preparation technique combines solution exchange and lyophilization. The results show that the porous aerogel can achieve high performance with high vapor capture (up to 5.86 g·g −1 at 90% RH and 25 °C), rapid photothermal conversion efficiency (up to 37.4 °C within 10 min under 0.5 kW·m −2 light at 25 °C), a low desorption temperature (lower than 40 °C), and an effective water release rate. Under real-world outdoor conditions (0.11–1.01 kW·m −2 ), the water collection capacity reaches 1.125 L·kg −1 , sufficient for an adult's daily minimum water intake. Even under extreme environmental circumstances, our approach provides a simple, effective, and practical solution.

Abstract:Due to the sluggish sorption/desorption kinetics of absorbents, effective atmospheric water harvesting remains challenging. Herein, a biomimetic composite sorbent is reported that not only shows superior water uptake performance of 0.77–2.56 g g−1 at 30%–80% RH within 50 min, but also permits the release of 95% of adsorbed water within 10 min under one sun irradiation. Sorption‐based atmospheric water generation (SAWG) is a promising strategy to alleviate the drinkable water scarcity of arid regions. However, the high‐water production efficiency remains challenging due to the sluggish sorption/desorption kinetics. Herein, a composite sorbent@biomimetic fibrous membrane (PPy‐COF@Trilayer‐LiCl) is reported by mimicking nature's Murray networks, which exhibits outstanding water uptake performance of 0.77–2.56 g g−1 at a wide range of relative humidity of 30%–80% within 50 min and fast water release capacity of over 95% adsorbed water that can be released within 10 min under one sun irradiation. The superior sorption–desorption kinetics of PPy‐COF@Trilayer‐LiCl are enabled by the novel hierarchically porous structure, which is also the critical factor to lead a directional rapid water transport and vapor diffusion. Moreover, as a proof‐of‐concept demonstration, a wearable SAWG device is established, which can operate 10 sorption–desorption cycles per day in the outdoor condition and produce a high yield of clean water reaching up to 3.91 kg m−2 day−1. This study demonstrates a novel strategy for developing advanced solar‐driven SAWG materials with efficient water sorption–desorption properties.

Abstract:The adsorption-based atmospheric water harvesting technique has shown great potential in providing clean water. An ideal device for atmospheric water harvesting should enable the massive and quick release of water after it is rapidly absorbed by the moisture adsorbent. At present, however, the moisture adsorbent still experiences issues such as a slow water absorption rate, hampered adsorption–desorption kinetics, and a low total water yield. In this paper, a bilayer moisture adsorbent (BMA), which glues a hydrophilic macroporous layer for rapid water adsorption and a carbonized sunlight-absorbing layer for both water harvesting and desorption acceleration, is introduced. Further evidence suggests that it is the stable, fluffy, and rough porous structure of the BMA that helps to harvest atmospheric water efficiently. The fully carbonized BMA exhibits a water absorption capacity of up to 396% at a relative humidity of 90%, which is 20% higher than a monolayer sample. More importantly, the desorption efficiency of the half-carbonized BMA reaches 98% under 1 sun illumination. These results jointly demonstrate that the BMA can play the dual role of absorbing moisture and light, allowing for rapid atmospheric water harvesting, massive water storage, and efficient desorption under the light.

Abstract:Collecting water from the air could alleviate freshwater shortages in arid regions such as remote and inland areas. However, it is challenging to prepare adsorption materials that have high adsorption and desorption performance using straightforward synthesis routes for water harvesting applications. In this paper, a polydopamine (PDA)@Sodium polyacrylamide carboxymethyl cellulose (PAM-CMCNa)-calcium chloride (CaCl 2 ) composite aerogel (PDCA) with a vertical channel was prepared by salt template method and photopolymerization for atmospheric water collection (AWH). The designed vertical channel promotes the rapid transport of water molecules from the atmosphere to the interior of the hydrogel through capillary action. During this process, the hydrogel further expands to prevent the leakage of the internal salt solution, which effectively improves the water vapor adsorption and desorption by hydrogel. Experimental results showed that the hydrogel can absorb 2.78 g/g of water at 90% relative humidity (RH), where 56.3% of the captured water can be desorbed within 60 min of exposure under 1.0 sun light intensity. After 10 adsorption-desorption cycles, the PDCA still possesses excellent water sorption performance. The indoor water collection test showed that the water collection performance reached 2.143 kg/kg day at 90% RH and 25°C adsorption for 12 h and desorption for 6 h. The proposed method for the preparation of PDCA composites can achieve high water harvesting performance over a wide humidity range to enable solar-driven clean water production in remote areas.

Abstract:Water is readily available nearly anywhere as vapor. Thus, atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) technologies are seen as a promising solution to support sustainable water production. This work reports a novel semi-interpenetrating network, which integrates poly(pyrrole) doped with a hygroscopic salt and 2D graphene-based nanosheets optimally assembled within an alginate matrix, capable of harvesting water from the atmosphere with a record intake of up to 7.15 gw/gs. Owing to the incorporated graphene nanosheets, natural sunlight was solely used to enable desorption, achieving an increase of the temperature of the developed network of up to 71 °C within 20 min, resulting in a water yield of 3.36 L/kgS in each cycle with quality well within the World Health Organization standard ranges. Notably, after 30 cycles of sorption and desorption, the composite hydrogel displayed unchanged water uptake and stability. This study demonstrates that atmospheric water vapor as a complementary source of water can be harvested sustainably and effectively at a minimal cost and without external energy input.

Abstract:Harvesting water from the atmosphere is an important process to solve the extreme lack of water resources in arid regions. Adsorption-based atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) takes advantage of solar thermal energy to harvest water from air. This technique is particularly suitable for arid regions characterized by low humidity and an abundance of sunshine. Nonetheless, under low humidity conditions, AWH is highly dependent on water-adsorbing materials exhibiting excellent performance. In this work, a metal–organic framework (MOF), namely [Zn2(bpy) (btec)(H2O)2]·2H2O, also denoted as MWH-1, was investigated for application in water harvesting under low humidity conditions (<20%). Notably, MWH-1 displayed outstanding water and thermal stability. At temperatures of 293–333 K and low pressure, activated MWH-1a exhibited competitive water uptake (relative humidity (RH) = 5%, uptake: >200 cm3∙cm−3; RH = 10%, uptake: >250 cm3∙cm−3). This ensured effective water harvesting at high temperatures during the day. In situ powder X-ray diffraction and Fourier-transform infrared analyses confirmed the sensitive water adsorption process of MWH-1a. The X-ray single-crystal study further demonstrated that single-crystal structures could be completely restored following water harvesting. MWH-1 showed good structural stability and enabled water harvesting under low humidity and high temperature conditions. Thus, it has the potential for application in round-the-clock water harvesting in extremely arid regions.

Abstract:As urbanization progresses, green spaces and water bodies are reducing continuously while impervious hard pavements are expanding, leading to a significant decline in rainfall absorption and the increased flooding risk. The presence of dissolved organic pollutants and soluble heavy metal ions in rainfall runoff significantly influences environmental behavior, making the improvement of runoff pollution crucial for enhancing water quality. Permeable bricks, a commonly utilized material in sponge cities, effectively mitigate rainwater runoff and pollutant discharge. The humus coating facilitates the effective interaction between metal ions and internal binding sites of humic acid particles, resulting in strong binding and limited release. In this study, a gravity-driven coupled membrane bioreactor (GDMBR) was employed to analogy permeable bricks with its upper surface coated with humus to investigate the mitigation effect on runoff pollution. And during 66-days operation, the removal rate of NH 3 -N was exceeding 80 %, while UV 254 and COD Mn decreased significantly, indicating that organic matter may be degraded by microorganisms and humus on the membrane surface. The membrane surface was found to harbor a substantial population of active bacteria based on scanning electron microscopy (SEM), laser scanning confocal microscopy (CLSM), and ATP content analysis. Besides, nitrifying bacteria existed in both humus layer and underside layer, which formed biofilms and improved the removal rate of NH 3 -N. The feasibility report shows that permeable brick is more promising to apply in stormwater runoff pollution control.

Abstract:Freshwater shortages and the uneven distribution of water resources are critical issues for economic development and human life, and collecting water vapor in the air is one of the important ways to alleviate these issues. In recent years, adsorption-based atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) techniques have received much attention, and the core difficulty in establishing an efficient system is to develop a highly efficient functional material for AWH. In this work, an AWH material was prepared consisting of carbon fiber felt as a three-dimensional skeleton and loaded with poly(vinyl alcohol) immobilized LiCl and graphite, as a water capture and release functional material. A 24 h water capture-3 h water release test was carried out at room temperature, showing excellent water collection ability of 0.907 g·g-1 of water at 30% relative humidity (RH) and 2.429 g·g-1 of water at 80% RH. Using a 2 h capture-2 h release cycling test, the sample demonstrated a stable water capture-release performance. An outdoor field test was conducted, showing water collection efficiencies of up to 60%. We believe that the carbon fiber felt can provide good mechanical properties and achieve a high mass loading of the functional materials, and the composite material has a simple manufacturing process and realizes energy saving and sustainable water harvesting.
All-natural, Eco-friendly Composite Foam for Highly Efficient Atmospheric Water Harvesting

Abstract:Water is vital for life, yet about 10 % of the world population lacks access to it. The atmosphere is a ubiquitous and abundant water reservoir, equivalent to 10 % of the freshwater in all lakes on earth. Existing absorbent materials for atmospheric water extraction, such as silica gels, zeolites, and metal-organic frameworks, suffer from either low water capture capacity or expensive and hazardous fabrication processes. Here we demonstrate an all-natural, eco-friendly composite foam with high performance in atmospheric water harvesting in both non-arid and arid environments, solely powered by natural sunlight without any other energy input. The composite foam is made of natural and earth-abundant cellulose and graphite via an aqueous process (no organic solvent used), followed by carbonization and LiCl doping. The foam can absorb water over 670 % of its weight from an atmosphere at 90 % relative humidity (RH) and quickly release 95 % of absorbed water under sunlight irradiation in 1 h. Remarkable daily water production of 1.24 g g −1 day −1 in an arid environment (30 % RH) and 2.83 g g −1 day −1 in a non-arid environment (30 %−60 % RH) has been achieved, outperforming existing absorbent materials. The all-natural composite foam is also eco-friendly and non-toxic, promising a feasible and efficient green solution to atmospheric water harvesting.

Abstract:Abstract An α-d-galactosyl binding lectin was purified from Bandeiraea simplicifolia seeds by affinity chromatography. Melibiose was oxidized to the corresponding aldonic acid, and condensed with aminoethyl-Bio-Gel P-300 in the presence of a water-soluble carbodiimide to afford a specific adsorbent which retained B erythrocyte hemagglutinating activity from the seed extract. Elution with galactose-containing buffer displaced the bound lectin which appeared homogeneous by disc gel electrophoresis, pH 4.3, immunoelectrophoresis, gel filtration, and sedimentation analysis. Multiple bands were obtained upon electrophoresis at pH 9.5 and isoelectric focusing. The lectin (mol wt 114,000) is composed of four apparently identical subunits and contains 6.7% by weight carbohydrate (mannose, glucosamine, fucose, and xylose). A metalloprotein, the lectin requires Ca2+ for hemagglutinating activity. Amino acid analysis revealed a high content of acidic and hydroxylic amino acids, only trace amounts of methionine, and one cysteine per subunit. Modification of cysteine with 5,5'-dithiobis(2-nitrobenzoic acid) resulted in complete loss of hemagglutinating activity. Inactivation was partially reversible upon reduction with dithiothreitol. The lectin agglutinates B and AB erythrocytes very strongly, A1 cells weakly, and does not agglutinate A2 or O cells. Polysaccharides and glycoproteins with terminal, nonreducing α-d-galactosyl residues reacted with the lectin to form precipitin bands by Ouchterlony double diffusion, whereas those with terminal β-d-galactosyl residues did not (the galactomannan of Torulopsis gropengiesseri excepted). Polysaccharide precipitating activity of the lectin exhibited an unusually broad pH optimum (6.0 to 11.0), was inhibited by EDTA, destroyed by dialysis of the lectin against acetic acid to remove bound metal, and restored by addition of a divalent metal cation. Glycosides of α-d-galactopyranose were the best inhibitors examined by the hapten inhibition technique. Interestingly, UDP-galactose was shown to inhibit polysaccharide precipitation. Lactose, l-arabinose, d-fucose, d-glucose, and d-mannose were noninhibitory. We suggest that Bandeirae simplicifolia lectin, the first α-d-galactopyranosyl binding lectin (anti-B lectin) to be purified and characterized, will be valuable not only as a serological reagent, but in studies of polysaccharides, glycoproteins, and cell membrane structure.
Carbon nanotubes decorated hollow metal-organic frameworks for efficient solar-driven atmospheric water harvesting

Abstract:High equilibrium uptake capacity and rapid adsorption/desorption kinetics are essential to achieve efficient atmospheric water harvesting. In this work, carbon nanotubes decorated hollow MIL-101(Cr) particles (HMC-2) are prepared and utilized for solar-driven atmospheric water harvesting with nice water adsorption capacity and fast kinetics. The hierarchical porous hollow MIL-101(Cr) particles formed by post-etching show highly active defect sites and low mass transfer resistance, which promotes the adsorption and diffusion of water molecules. The resulted HMC-2 demonstrates a maximum water uptake of 1.074 g/g at 25 degrees C, 90% RH. Notably, the water adsorption capacity of HMC-2 in low humidity (40% RH) are increased by 113% and 202.6% compared to pure MIL-101(Cr) and carbon nanotubes decorated MIL-101(Cr). Due to the synergistic effect of CNTs and hollow MIL-101(Cr), the HMC-2 composites generate sufficient solar thermal heat and improve the desorption kinetics. The maximum adsorbed water of HMC-2 can be completely desorbed within 90 min under one sunlight. A single cycle of sorption-desorption of HMC-2 can be achieved within 210 min. This means that if the water harvesting cycle is performed three times daily, it is possible to harvest 3.22 L of water per kilogram of adsorbent at the area with high humidity. The water uptake and release rates of HMC-2 are competitive with even superior to most those reported. This may demonstrate a promising potential for atmospheric water generators.

Abstract:The advancement of additional methods for freshwater generation is imperative to effectively address the global water shortage crisis. In this regard, extraction of the ubiquitous atmospheric moisture is a powerful strategy allowing for decentralized access to potable water. The energy requirements as well as the temporal and spatial restrictions of this approach can be substantially reduced if an appropriate sorbent is integrated in the atmospheric water generator. Recently, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have been successfully employed as sorbents to harvest water from air, making atmospheric water generation viable even in desert environments. Herein, the latest progress in the development of MOFs capable of extracting water from air and the design of atmospheric water harvesters deploying such MOFs are reviewed. Furthermore, future directions for this emerging field, encompassing both material and device improvements, are outlined.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as a class of porous materials with facile uptake and release of water, turning them into excellent substrates for real-world atmospheric water harvesting applications. The performance of different MOF systems was experimentally characterized at the bulk level by assessing the total amount of water taken up and the release kinetics, leaving the question behind of what the upper limit of the pristine materials actually is. Tillandsia‐Inspired Ultra‐Efficient Thermo‐Responsive Hygroscopic Nanofibers for Solar‐Driven Atmospheric Water Harvesting

Abstract:Inspired by Tillandsia, a thermo‐responsive hygroscopic nanofiber called PCP@LiCl is prepared for atmospheric water harvesting. PCP@LiCl exhibits unique kinetics due to the porous structure, capable of adsorbing moisture to saturation within 2 h at 25 °C and 15%–30% relative humidity and oozing liquid water within 5 min under sunlight. Sorption‐based atmospheric water harvesting (SAWH) is a promising approach for supplying water in off‐grid arid regions. However, it is difficult to improve the SAWH efficiency because water undergoes multiple phase transformations, such as water vapor–water (desorption and condensation) in the desorption phase. To address this issue, an ultrahygroscopic temperature‐responsive hydrogel nanofiber inspired by Tillandsia is developed, comprising poly N‐isopropylacrylamide, poly N‐dimethylacetamide, and carbon nanotubes and impregnated with lithium chloride (PCP@LiCl). The hydrophobicity of the nanofiber membrane is enhanced with increasing temperature, facilitating water separation from the hydrogel in liquid form. Moreover, PCP@LiCl exhibits unique kinetics at 25 °C and 15%–30% relative humidity, capable of adsorbing moisture to saturation within 2 h, and oozing liquid water within 5 min under sunlight. Through global potential modeling, it is demonstrated that PCP@LiCl has potential applications in arid and semiarid regions. This study provides new insights into the design of high‐performance composites for solar‐powered atmospheric water harvesting.

Abstract:Solar-powered atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) with metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has been recognized as an attractive way to alleviate water shortage stress in rural arid areas given the naturally abundant solar energy. However, the existing solar-powered AWH technologies only allow a singular water production mode: either solar heating-driven AWH which usually results in rather poor water productivity due to the limited availability of sufficient sunlight or conductive heating-driven all-day AWH with significantly improved water productivity but requiring additional electricity provided with a photovoltaic module. This greatly limits the flexibility in managing AWH based on climate conditions, water productivity, and energy cost. Herein, a sandwich-structured MOF monolith (denoted as CACS) with dual heating capacity, localized solar heating (LSH) and electrical heating (LEH), is presented. Compared with LSH, the use of LEH leads to more rapid and uniform heating of CACS monoliths, thereby driving a significantly enhanced water desorption efficiency with faster kinetics. Using the CACS monolith as an AWH sorbent, a new type of atmospheric water harvester is developed and able to produce water in multiple working modes: LSH-, LEH-, and LSH-/LEH-driven AWH, thereby enabling flexible AWH on demand: direct use of sunlight for LSH-driven AWH during the sunlight-sufficient day and/or LEH-driven all-day AWH powered by a photovoltaic module particularly during the sunlight-absent/-insufficient time (night or cloudy day). When working at the LSH-/LEH-driven AWH mode, the resulting prototype delivers 1.4 LH2O kgMOF-1 day-1 of water productivity with 2.3 kW·h L-1H2O of energy consumption, corresponding to 5.4 times higher water productivity than the LSH-driven AWH working mode alone and 17.9% of energy saving at the cost of 22.2% of water productivity reduction compared with the LEH-driven AWH working mode alone. The current work, therefore, demonstrates a novel solar-powered AWH strategy that enables all-day water production with flexible choices on AWH working modes in terms of climate conditions, desired water productivity, and energy cost.

Abstract:The temperature dependences of the Kerr coefficient and the response time in the electrooptical effect of polymer-stabilised blue phases (PSBPs) of liquid crystals (LCs) with various polymer concentrations are investigated in a wide temperature range including temperatures lower than room temperature. The Kerr coefficients are found to abruptly decrease at low temperature, and the response time-temperature relation obeys the Arrhenius equation. For comparison of the Kerr effect and molecular rotation at low temperature, various physical properties such as permittivity, rotational relaxation time and dielectric relaxation strength of the PSBPs are investigated. The electrooptical response times and the dielectric relaxation times show different temperature dependences, and rotation of LC molecules in PSBPs was sufficiently active at low temperature and not strongly affected by the polymer.

Abstract:Sorption-based atmospheric water harvesting (SAWH) followed by solar-driven desorption is emerging as a promising energy and cost-effective solution to alleviate the worldwide freshwater scarcity. To achieve efficient atmospheric water harvesting, a SAWH system with low water transfer resistance and high sorption–desorption kinetics that integrates photothermal properties is demanded. Herein, inspired by nature, a sodium alginate (SA)-based SAWH hemisphere with spatially centripetal conical channels loaded with CaCl 2 crystals is designed. The device demonstrates unidirectional water transfer properties and high moisture absorption capacity. To enable solar-driven water desorption, the device is engineered with a photothermal layer by chelation of tannic acid (TA) with Fe 3+ . The multifunctional SAWH device with a special channel structure presents a superb water absorption of 0.90–2.29 g g −1 within a wide range of relative humidity (RH) (40–90%) and a fast solar-driven water desorption rate of 1.77 kg m −2 h −1 under one sun illumination. In outdoor tests, 82.3% of the water absorbed overnight could be released during the daytime under natural sunlight, achieving an ultrahigh daily water production of 3.72 L per m 2 that is superior to that of most previously reported all-in-one SAWH systems. This proposed design strategy provides an effective solution for collecting water from the air by SAWH followed by solar-driven water desorption.
