Abstract:The calculations on optimized geometries, atomic net charges and relative stability for the model molecules [ReHx(PH3)y]n− (x=9, y=0, n=2; x=7,5,3, y=2,3,4, n=0) of the rhenium polyhydride compounds [ReHx(PR3)y]n− are carried out by using a nonlocal density functional theory (DFT-LDA/NL) method with relativistic effect. It is found that the geometries optimized are in reasonable agreement with the experimental structures, and the atomic net charges are positive for the central Re atoms and the P atoms, and negative for the terminal H-ligands. While the positive charges on the Re and P atoms increase obviously with the increase of the number of the terminal coordinated H atoms, x, in [ReHx(PH3)y]n−, the calculated results reveal the same increase in order of the relative stability. The calculations of total energy at the relativistic effect levels with and without spin-orbit term show spin-orbit interactions to be within 10–13kJmol−1. On the basis of the natural bond orbitals and McWeeny bond orders calculated at Xα level of DFT, it is found that the ligand substitution in [ReHx(PH3)y]n− is, in fact, that one weaker Re–P bond is replaced with two stronger Re–H bonds, while quite weak π(Re–{Pn}) bonds are simultaneously formed in ReH3(PH3)4 and ReH5(PH3)3. However, the replacement of one PR3 group by two terminal H-ligands is electrically equivalent, conserving the 18-electron configuration on the central Re atom.
