Abstract:Play engages humans cognitively, emotionally, and physically at all ages. Using a historical framework, and focusing on play as represented by material artifacts such as toys and games, this book explores play as a form of somatic engagement that reflects cultural attitudes about development and learning as these have evolved over time in western culture. Theorists in the twentieth century such as Klein and Winnicott, Huizinga and Callois, Piaget, Bruner and Vygotsy brought different perspectives to our understanding of play’s role in our society. In particular, Vygotsky’s theories about process provide insight into how children attend to learning and assimilate new information. The increasing use of digital media as both an entertainment and learning environment at ever-younger ages, is generating new discussions about the nature and value of play in children’s development, in particular, physical, or somatic play. The emphasis on games intended for children necessitates a discussion of the cognitive, behavioral, and neuroscience that supports play activities and physical engagement as a crucial aspect of development. The book then looks at the trajectory of digital games in contemporary culture and explores whether these artifacts (whether intended for learning or entertainment) have extended or are curtailing boundaries of somatic engagement. Finally, the book discusses alternative play and game design and, speculates on the future of new media play artifacts.

Abstract:In the introduction pages to popular children games, Pitrè describes play activities as a form of "creative pastimes" which serve to sharpen the mind and develop physical forces, anticipating, by over a century or so, the subsequent reflections on motor praxeology (Parlebas, 2010, pp. 131-148). Traditional games, expression of innocent amusements (Pitrè, 1888) help children to take part in the construction of their own story, highlighting the strong relationship between games and childhood developmental development, on which that of the communities from which it originates depends. In the course of the historical evolution of the school, the need to include both games from the past and the most current teaching methodologies in school curricula has been gradually formalized, recreating interactive and dynamic environments and game situations, not simply reproductive and executive, but propositive and creative (Almond, L. 1986). Traditional games offer an original interpretation of social human phenomena, confirming that "culture is first played" (Huizinga, 2002). This emphasis on playful memories of the past calls for an interesting reflection on popular heritage, starting with traditional games to be presented to children, right from the first schooling.
Aldo van Eyck's Playgrounds: Aesthetics, Affordances, and Creativity

Abstract:After World War II, the Dutch architect Aldo van Eyck developed hundreds of playgrounds in the city of Amsterdam. These public playgrounds were located in parks, squares, and derelict sites, and consisted of minimalistic aesthetic play equipment that was supposed to stimulate the creativity of children. Over the last decades, these playgrounds have been studied by sociologists, theorists of art and architecture, and psychologists. Adopting an ecological approach to the human environment, it is argued that the abstract forms of van Eyck's play sculptures indeed stimulate the creativity of the child. Whereas a slide or a swing almost dictates what a child is supposed to do, van Eyck's play equipment invites the child to actively explore the numerous affordances (action possibilities) it provided. However, it is argued that the standardization (e.g., equal distances between blocks or bars) that tends to characterize van Eyck' play equipment has negative effects on the playability. This standardization, which was arguably the result of the aesthetic motives of the designer, might be appealing to children when simply looking at the equipment, but it is not of overriding importance to them when playing in it. Indeed, a recent study indicates that the affordances provided by messy structures appear to have a greater appeal to playing children.

Abstract:By the interwar years, Parisian parks—artificial pockets of nature in the densely built city—had become a locus of debates around “child-friendly play spaces.” The diversity of Paris’s young population in age, gender, and social status meant that the criteria of what constituted “child-friendly” was constantly in flux and that definitions of childhood remained fluid. Interwar Parisian parks became spaces of debate over proper forms of outdoor play and the risks children faced while playing. Municipal administrators and elected municipal councilors, together with pedagogues and parents, mutually constructed the spaces of parks and park-use policies. Children’s presence in public acted both as an incentive and a challenge in creating municipal policies to regulate public spaces or in reconfiguring the organization of these spaces. Municipal council debates, parents’ petitions or complaints, reports filed by neighborhood representatives, and daily logs recorded by park guards all reveal how children’s actions in green spaces played a pivotal role in the making and remaking of the urban environment.

Abstract:This book begins with the observation that, during the English Reformation, holy things taken from churches and monasteries were on occasion not smashed or burned but instead given to children as toys. Iconoclasm has tended to feature prominently in narratives of modernity as a process of disenchantment, sometimes understood as the cultural diminution of playfulness: this book asks how these narratives might have to change once we recognize that iconoclasm and child’s play were periodically one and the same. Each chapter begins with an example of iconoclastic child’s play in practice--from locations in England, Germany, and East Asia, involving objects from broken crucifixes to wooden sculptures. The chapters then move outward from these starting points to ask what iconoclasm as child’s play can tell us about the ways in which children, their play, and objects more broadly are made to assume meanings. In pursuing these questions the book draws consistently on major and minor sixteenth-century figures--Erasmus, Bruegel, Spenser--but also ranges backward and forward to consider biblical, classical, and patristic understandings of play, as well as more recent thinkers including Walter Benjamin, D. W. Winnicott, T. W. Adorno, Alfred Gell, Ian Hacking, and Michael Taussig. These figures are used not so much to theorize iconoclasm as child’s play as to consider how this phenomenon might inflect the ways in which we seek to interpret and to organize children, play, and the past.

Abstract:SummaryThis essay proposes that Haarlem genre artist Jan Miense Molenaer created two paintings, only known today from photographs in the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie (RKD). The pictures depict peasants; two are playing cards, others are observers. Molenaer plausibly used print prototypes after the designs of Pieter Bruegel the Elder, adding observations from life of his present day. The figures are the same in the two pictures, concerning their costumes and gestures. Some slightly differ in their size and emotional reaction in one work with the employment of an extra participant. Repeating protagonists from one painting to the next with little change was a workshop practice Molenaer undertook frequently after he dated his paintings in 1629. It is suggested the artist may have known the prints after the elder Bruegel's inventions through the Antwerp print market, or more directly through Adriaen Brouwer.

Abstract:ABSTRACTObjects, whether toys or not, are likely to become the center of children's game, which can trigger children's exploration and imagination, and build the world's environmental and psychological statements by manipulating something, to enhance the autonomy of children and inspire their creativity. This paper, based on scaffolding learning theory, puts forward the learning principle of constructive play suitable for learning in play school, suitable for cognitive behaviors of children aged 5 to 8 years old, and aims to encourage children to think creatively in the course of play, rather than learning knowledge and solve problems. We redesign the images, most commonly used by children RPG storytelling, and embed interactive intelligence, to better help children play games, stimulate their imagination and creativity in storytelling, and encourage them share with their companions and parents.

Abstract:The acknowledgment of the qualities and features of the world is made through the body, movement, and imagination. During their development, children learn new skills, complexify their thoughts, and become more autonomous. The progressive increase in motor repertoire in children reflects a more unified and solid self. Nowadays, there is a generalized restriction of the movement of children. It starts at home when parents establish rigid and/or phobic attachments with their children; it can be also observed at school which is more and more based on rigid learning rhythms and obsessive ideas about students' performance, and finally in urban areas where free and outdoor play has considerably decreased during recent decades. The current lifestyles in Western societies resulted in a decrease in play among children. The culture influences the dominant types of psychopathology and, during childhood, mental suffering is often expressed with the increase (turmoil) or decrease (inhibition) of the body movement. Sports are underpinned by movement and play; they are a powerful tool in health promotion and an excellent way to assign meaning to movement. This work is an essay about the importance of play and youth sports in child development.

Abstract:Adult men outside of the schools also played football, using the game as a means of confirming social bonds centered on educational experience, occupation, ethnic identity, or military service. These types of games took place when the usual social strictures on male behavior were loosened, such as holidays or times of war. These matches fall into four categories, although there was often considerable overlap between them: nostalgia football, played as a way of recalling schooldays or childhoods; holiday football, a popular version of mob football generally played on special occasions or as part of ethnic festivals; military football, first played by soldiers during the Civil War; and club football, organized by teams outside the schools. Although games from the first three categories were not uncommon, matches between formal established clubs were rare. Formal, organized clubs detached from educational institutions do not begin to form until the 1880s.
Children’s Games and Adult Repentance: Concept of Childhood in Literature of Early 20th Century

Abstract:This article describes the transformation of the image of the child in literature during the 10-30s of the 20th century. The stories of three contemporary authors are used as material, which are connected by motifs of enlightenment and repentance: “The Day of the Boy” by F. Verfel, “The Paper Kite” by Lu Xin, and “On Tenderness” by Nadezhda Teffi. The basis for comparative analysis is the biographical similarities, close circle of philosophical and aesthetic interests of Austrian, Chinese, and Russian authors, as well as the genre and thematic proximity of the texts. The researcher assumes that increased attention to the image of the child arises in the early 19th century in Romantic literature, which interprets it either as a victim or as an angel. However, in the second half of the 19th century, images of “evil children” begin to appear. The analysis shows that under the influence of Freud, the motive of children’s games as a way to familiarize oneself with evil, temptation, and inevitable experiences during development consistently emerges in literature of the early 20th century. The common form of reminiscence present in all three texts allows the authors to interpret childhood events causally and derive later moral experiences from children’s games. The article concludes that Verfel’s, Lu Xin’s, and Teffi’s stories are influenced by Freud’s idea of the interconnection between childhood impressions and the fate of adults, who must comprehend past shame, guilt, and repentance.

Abstract:The social lives of young children gives a vivid picture of young childrens lives in daycare groups. How do they make friends and how do they develop a sense of togetherness? The clashes and frictions between pre-schoolers reveal the social questions they are grappling with - and these often look surprisingly like those of adults. For example, the question of the newcomer to a group, who very rapidly learns the unwritten rules through the negative feedback from the children. Then there are the playthings that in the hands of other children seem so much more attractive than what they have themselves. Or the desire to play undisturbed, without being bothered by other children. In the discussion of these social questions, attention is always given to the teacher or carer. How can they help children to learn basic social values, rules and skills through play? The book contains numerous descriptions of childrens interactions, richly illustrated with photographs and analysed with the help of new psychological insights. The authors have years of experience in scientific research and in the development of training programmes for teachers in child-care.

Abstract:Play is widely discussed within the context of children's education and development. However, play (specifically child-directed play) should also be understood in the context of children's participation. With an argument grounded in theory and research from multiple perspectives, this article encourages readers to consider play as not only a means to an end, but as an essential element of children's current engagement within cultural contexts and the creation of social capital and personal voice. Recognizing the limits of theoretical discussion alone, the authors have developed a practice-based community engagement and training model to support child-directed play across various contexts. Pop-Up Adventure Playgrounds support and celebrate child-directed play in public spaces and help to reframe discussions about children's right to play as part of an ongoing and collective issue of human rights, citizenship, and participation.

Abstract:Background: Unintentional injuries are a leading cause of children's hospitalisations and death globally and are thus a pressing public health concern. Fortunately, they are largely preventable, and understanding children's perspectives on safe and dangerous outdoor play can help educators and researchers identify ways to mitigate the likelihood of their occurrence. Problematically, children's perspectives are rarely included in injury prevention scholarship. In this study, we acknowledge children's right to have their voices heard by exploring the perspectives on safe and dangerous play and injury of 13 children in Metro Vancouver, Canada. Methods: We employed tenets of risk and sociocultural theory and a child-centred community-based participatory research approach to injury prevention. We conducted unstructured interviews with children aged 9-13 years old. Results: Through our thematic analysis, we identified two themes: (1) 'little' and 'big' injuries and (2) risk and danger. Conclusion: Our results suggest children differentiate between 'little' and 'big' injuries by reflecting on the potential loss of opportunities for play with friends. Further, they suggest children avoid play they perceive as dangerous, but enjoy 'risk-seeking' because it is thrilling and provides them with opportunities to push their physical and mental capabilities. Child educators and injury prevention researchers can use our findings to inform their communications with children and make play spaces more accessible to, fun and safe for children.

Abstract:All children need to spend some time playing outdoors. In Northern European countries, schools are equipped with outdoor facilities where children can play during breaks between lessons. The Italian school system, oriented to a mnemonic learning approach, has attached a poor importance to the role of playing for kindergarten age children, and Italian kindergartens are not so well equipped for children's active play. Furthermore, Italian teachers and parents worried that while playing outdoors, children might catch a cold or hurt themselves, and discourage active play outside. The equipment of kindergartens' open spaces with wooden games, where children can play in the morning or after school, resulted in children's increased time of playing outdoors. These playgrounds are also used during vacation day time by children to play and in the evenings, for theatrical and animation events. Finally, watching over their children when playing, "forced" parents to talk to each other creating a social network.

Abstract:Children’s play with construction materials can render patterns, objects, functional systems, and pretend sequences. Children’s museums have provided new learning environments that enhance the educational value of constructive play. Constructive play with spatial patterns occurs when children focus on the spatial relationship of the medium’s elements to each other, rather than to the semantic relationship of the elements to some imagined or sighted object outside the medium itself. Constructive play to make objects is determined by the child’s reflective thinking about something external to the medium. Constructive play to make systems adds the demand of building a working set of elements. Constructing sequences requires that children go beyond what is possible and consider what is reasonable. In addition to solitary play with objects, observers can study constructive play in small group contexts and in the context of adult scaffolding.

Abstract:Injury prevention plays a key role in keeping children safe, but emerging research suggests that imposing too many restrictions on children's outdoor risky play hinders their development. We explore the relationship between child development, play, and conceptions of risk taking with the aim of informing child injury prevention. Generational trends indicate children's diminishing engagement in outdoor play is influenced by parental and societal concerns. We outline the importance of play as a necessary ingredient for healthy child development and review the evidence for arguments supporting the need for outdoor risky play, including: (1) children have a natural propensity towards risky play; and, (2) keeping children safe involves letting them take and manage risks. Literature from many disciplines supports the notion that safety efforts should be balanced with opportunities for child development through outdoor risky play. New avenues for investigation and action are emerging seeking optimal strategies for keeping children "as safe as necessary," not "as safe as possible." This paradigm shift represents a potential for epistemological growth as well as cross-disciplinary collaboration to foster optimal child development while preserving children's safety.

The author even uses them to make his observation toward the 19th Spanish society and convey some ironic ideas about his country's politic affairs, such as in the case of his short story Rompecabezas.
