Abstract:Excessive water in a channel is an important factor that triggers channelized debris flows. In this study, we propose a new system for the separation of water and sediment and drainage in order to drain water away from channels and reduce the potential for debris flows. The main component of the system contains a siphon drainage pool covered with an inclined perforated plate and siphon drainage pipes. The inclined perforated plate can separate sediment from the water, and the siphon drainage pipe can drain flood water quickly. To test the effectiveness of the new structure, a field experiment was developed and tested in a small catchment in which debris flow was an issue. The experimental results showed that the drainage pool effectively decreased the maximum depth of the flow in the triggering area, thereby avoiding the occurrence of debris flow. To set the optimize design parameters of the pool, three main design parameters were evaluated, i.e., peak discharge during storms, separation ability of drainage pool, and the maximum depth of surface flow in the triggering areas. The peak discharge was obtained by using the NAM model and a rational formula, and the NAM model provided more accurate results. The results of the calculation of the separated ratio showed large runoff volumes and a lower separated ratio. The results of the NAM model were used to simulate the maximum depth of flow using the FLO-2D model.

Abstract:To cope with frequent debris flow hazards, many cascade check dams and diversion channels have been adopted in Wenchuan, Sichuan, China, on the eastern margin of the Tibetan plateau. Yet severe damage to local infrastructure still occurred upon large-scale debris flows, and the most common cascading effect of debris flows, river blockage, is often overlooked in conventional mitigation design. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of mitigation measures against the large-scale debris flows on 20 August 2019 considering both the direct impact of debris flows and the cascading effect and to propose a numerical scheme to simulate serial check dams in a two-dimensional debris flow simulation model. Numerical simulation is conducted to reproduce the debris flow process and the cascading effect and to evaluate the effectiveness of improved mitigation measures. According to field investigations and the numerical analysis, all check dams in the study area were filled, indicating that the existing mitigation measures were inadequate. Simulation results further suggest that serial check dams are effective in reducing downstream deposition and the size of river debris barriers upon large debris flows. In some cases, risks induced by the cascading effect remain high even after check dams have been constructed, suggesting the need for additional mitigation measures. This study contributes to a robust design of debris flow mitigation measures against large-scale debris flows.

Abstract:The estimation of sediment deposited behind dams and reservoirs is of great significance for quantifying soil erosion rate and sediment flux. However, existing methods of sediment volume estimation often require detailed field measurements and historical topographic data, limiting the broader application of these methods. In this paper, focusing on the region that suffers the world’s most severe soil erosion, we combine unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) photogrammetry and simulate submerging analysis to propose a novel method for estimating sediment silted by check dams under complex topography. We obtained 1339 groups of topographic factors and ascertained the corresponding volumes of sediment deposited behind check dams in the loess hilly region of China (LHRC), and established five different models combined with regression analysis. Two different sets of data were used for method validation and optimal model determination. The results showed that the error of the optimal model in the volume estimation of single check dam and regional check dams is 12–13% and 2–3%, respectively. Additionally, the area-volume model has the potential to evaluate the sediment retention capacity of check dams (in the order of billions of cubic meters) in the whole LHRC, because the variables are easy to obtain and the model accuracy is relatively high. The further application of this method will help to evaluate the watershed sediment yield and regional soil and water conservation benefits, and is of great significance for explaining the future changes in water and sediment in the Yellow River basin.

Abstract:After the May 12 earthquake in Wenchuan, numerous debris flow disasters occurred due to heavy rainfall. After the earthquake, disaster prevention and mitigation projects, such as the sand dam, played an essential role in safety. However, when the outflow of solid material exceeds the designed storage capacity of the sand dam, the debris flow overtopping the dam intensifies the scraping effect on the source material of the gully channel. This paper takes the "8.20" debris flow in the Chutou gully as the research object. A transport mode of the debris flow after dam overtopping is studied through comprehensive field investigation, theoretical analysis, and indoor model tests. A quantitative evaluation model is established for the scraping depth and scraping volume of dam-overtopping debris flow. The study results showed that once the debris flow overtops a dam, the loose source carried by the channel is involved in the entire migration process, enlarging the fluid scale and intensifying the damage along the channel. The results agree with the measurements and observations, with maximum relative errors of 5.81% and 14.70%, respectively. This shows model validity. Furthermore, the test results show that the debris flow scarping phenomenon in the γ=[1.4 t/m 3 , 1.6 t/m 3 ] interval is the most significant. Overall, this study will help improve future engineering decisions, design strategies, and finding the best design solutions to minimize the risk of dam-overtopping debris flow disasters.

Abstract:Debris flows endanger humans living and property in mountainous regions all over the world, so it must be prevented and controlled by engineering. It is one of the quick and effective measures to build gravity check dam in the gorge from the formation area to the circulation area. Check dam often plays a controlling role in debris flow control. Check dam controls the development of debris flow, reduce the scale and frequency of debris flow. The consequences of the instability and destruction of check dam are extremely serious. However, debris flow hazard poses a great threat to check dam, especially the impact of debris flow on check dam is often the important cause of its stability damage. Accurately calculating the impact pressure and impact velocity of debris flow on check dam is a key scientific problem to be solved in the field of debris flow engineering prevention. Taking the drainage channel slope, the check dam slope ratio and the debris flow density (the clear water impact as the comparison experiment) as the experimental variables, eight pressure sensors are arranged at different positions on the upstream surface of the check dam to receive the debris flow impact signal, and the high-speed continuous data acquisition is adopted. The impact signal is collected and transformed by the instrument and the acquisition system. The time history curve of the impact pressure of the debris flow on the upstream surface of the check dam is obtained. The distribution of average velocity of debris flow along the vertical and lateral directions of the check dam is studied under different drainage channel slopes, different debris flow densities, and different check dam slope ratios. The results show that (1) at the same position on the upstream surface of the check dam, the average value of the debris flow velocity nonlinearly increases with the slope of the drainage channel, the slope ratio of the check dam, and the debris flow density increasing. (2) The average flow velocity of the debris flow decreases along the lateral direction of the check dam from the overflow section to the dam shoulder. (3)The debris flow average velocity directly affected is greater than the top position along the height direction of the check dam. The study results are of great significance for providing data and technical support for the structural design of the check dam.

Abstract:In the Yarlung Zangbo River valley in north Himalaya, many high-frequency debris flows develop, with large amounts of run-out debris materials. To reduce the hazard scale of the debris flow, check dams are frequently used to mitigate and prevent debris flow movement, and many check dams are damaged under the impact of debris flows. This paper proposed a novel integrated three-dimensional numerical approach to quantitatively assess the dynamic process of a debris flow and its interaction with a check dam considering check dam damage. The numerical approach is based on the SPH-FDEM method, which uses the SPH of Bingham fluid to simulate debris flows while using the FDEM to simulate structural check dams composed of rock blocks. A test of granular flow impact measurement in an inclined flume was used to validate the rheological characteristics of the debris flow and its interaction with the structure. The debris flow in the G62 gully, which is near NR 318 and has the potential to destroy the road, is used as a case for numerical simulation. Several different engineering conditions, including without a check dam, with an undamaged check dam and with a damaged check dam, were considered. The simulation results show that the debris flow scale without considering the check dam is consistent with the field investigation. The run-out speed, viscous dissipation energy, and frictional energy of the debris flow with time can be quantitatively acquired. When a check dam is considered, the processes of the dam undergoing debris impact, fracture generation and evolution, the separation of broken blocks from the main check dam body, and the transport of these blocks by the debris flow can be clearly observed. The stress, damage area, damage extent, damage mode, fracture energy, and fracture area of the check dam can be quantitatively acquired from the model, which greatly expands the applicability of debris flow numerical models.

Abstract:In recent years, the impacts of climate change have significantly heightened the susceptibility of the Xizang Autonomous Region in China to various geological hazards. These hazards pose significant long-term implications for the development and maintenance of critical line projects in the vicinity. Consequently, the implementation of an effective quantitative assessment method for geological hazards becomes paramount for disaster prevention and mitigation. This study introduces a novel method integrating remote sensing, drone-based oblique photogrammetry, and onsite field investigation for effectively identifying geological hazards, and presents a risk quantification technique tailored for high mountain regions under varied rainfall possibilities. By utilizing this innovative approach, a comprehensive investigation was conducted to assess the characteristics and impacts of rainfall-induced debris flow in the Cuojiu Valley, southeastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, China, under varying rainfall probabilities. The study examines the effects of these debris flow on the regional line project, based on the maximum accumulated thickness and the highest affected height triggered by rainfall. The analysis revealed that severe rainfall events act as triggers for these hazardous occurrences. Importantly, the study highlights that the safety of critical line projects in the region is compromised by the identified debris flow risk in the Cuojiu Valley during extreme rainfall events. This study’s novelty lies in identifying the distribution of geological hazard sources through the proposed method and conducting a quantitative assessment of multi-scenario high-elevation and long-runout debris flows in the Cuojiu Valley. This provides valuable insights for preventing geological hazards in high-elevation valleys.
A GIS Based Model for Calculating of Flood Area

Abstract:In this paper, a model of flood area display and damageevaluation is discussed, which adopts seed spread algorithm to calculate and visualize flood area based on a DEM data set and under the condition of a given water level of flood. The raster image containing flood area is overlaid with raster data converted from thematic vector maps such as land-use map and related to other socio-economic data, and then quantitative evaluation of flood damage is achieved. There are two different cases, the so-called “non-source flood” and “source flood”, for determining flood area based on DEM and under the given water level condition. Non-source flood corresponds to the case with well-distributed and large-area rainfall where all the low-lying land may have a flood disaster, and in this case all the points with elevations below the given water level should be included in the flood area. The “source flood” is the case of flood (e.g. from bank burst) flushing through the surrounding lands that needs to consider “ci rculating” condition. Because flood may be obstructed by ring structures or high lands, thus it can only cover the place where it flows and reaches. One of the computer processing methods suitable for source flood is the seed-spread algorithm. The principle of this method is to select a representative pixel as a seed and to examine its contiguous pixels outward along 4 or 8 directions. The pixels, contiguous to it and meeting the given conditions, become seeds, and then contiguous pixels to the new seeds will be examined in the same way. This process repeats until an aggregation of the pixels which meet the given conditions on a certain plane are obtained. Adopting seed spread algorithm for source-flood area calculation is just to achieve an aggregation of pixels, which satisfies the connectivity requirement and the given conditions of water level. The initial position of seed pixel should usually be selected on the characteristic points, e.g. adjacent to a reservoir dam or stream boundary. The precision of flood area calculation is mainly determined by spatial resolution of the DEM, the area on the ground is represented by each pixel; whereas the accuracy of flood area calculation, to a great extent, is dependent on the preci sion of the DEM's pixel value or elevation.Once the area below the flood water level has been calculated, the flood damage evaluation can be calculated by overlaying the flood range with thematic maps and by relating to other socio-economic data. All thematic maps were converted to raster data because algorithm of the overlay analysis implemented in raster format is relatively simple and computing is fast. In order to improve accuracy of the flood damage evaluation it is necessary to accurately register and georefer all raster layers before overlay analysis. The calculation results of flood damage evaluation are generally represented by tabulation, which is a kind of classified statistics of flood damage data, e.g. a table representing total area of every land-use type in different administrative divisions. The results of flood area calculation and damage evaluation can also be visually and dynamically provided in the forms of graph, image, 3D or virtual reality. The model has been successfully applied in the “Zhejiang Provincial Water Conservancy Management System” developed for a national project.
Tracking long-term cascade check dam siltation: implications for debris flow control and landslide stability

Abstract:Check dams represent one of the most important engineering solutions for debris flow prevention and control in mountainous terrains. However, the dynamics of siltation processes behind cascade check dams and siltation effects on check dam efficiency remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated the long-term silting processes and their effect on the development and propagation of debris flows at the cascade check dam in Hunshui Gully (HSG) in southwestern China. Multi-source topographic data from different time periods were combined with information on the frequency of debris flows over a 53-year period to determine silting processes behind check dams. Our results showed that (1) the siltation area behind check dams increased over 10 times from 1978 to 2019, reaching 26.28 ± 0.02 ha; (2) the slope of the channels first decreased and then increased, the slopes of the branch channels and the main channel exhibited a stepwise difference, and headward siltation at anaphase was present; (3) the cascade check dam group in HSG intercepted and stabilized a total of 40 ± 0.96 Mm3 of sediment in 45 years, which was 4 times more than the amount that was transported. We concluded that the cascade check dam group in HSG ensured effective debris flow control, and that the siltation behind check dams had significant functions in debris flow control and prevention. Moreover, the cascade check dam group possessed the functions of storage, energy dissipation, channel consolidation, and slope stabilization at different silting periods.

Investigation of 20 August 2019 Catastrophic Debris Flows Triggered by Extreme Rainstorms Near Epicentre of Wenchuan Earthquake

Abstract:A strong earthquake could trigger a large number of co-seismic landslides and induce large amount of loose materials on steep slopes and in the gullies. Under strong rainfall conditions, these loose materials could induce devastating debris flows, which will endanger the resettled population and destroy the re-built infrastructures. From 19 to 20 August 2019, fourteen debris flows were triggered by extreme rainstorms near the epicentre of the Wenchuan Earthquake. Among the fourteen incidents, three of them produced debris flow dams, which changed the course of the Minjiang River and resulted in flooding at different parts of the reconstructed Miansi town. In addition, sixteen casualties, twenty two missing persons, and destruction of four main roads were reported. In this paper, one typical catchment, named as “Dengxi gully”, near the epicentre of the Wenchuan earthquake (Sichuan Province, China) was chosen as a case study for remote sensing analysis, field investigation of landslide evolution and debris flow development before and after the catastrophic events. The debris flow in the study area was initiated in four stages: (a) generation of a large amount of loose materials from the Wenchuan Earthquake; (b) run-off erosion from co-seismic landslide material on hilly slopes and repeated mobilizations in steep channels over the years; (c) development of high intensity localised rainfall events; (d) wash out of accumulated materials in gully by the flood. The study of “8.20 debris flows” can provide a benchmark for analysis of long-term evolution of debris flows in order to identify potential continuing hazards in the earthquake-affected areas and make proper engineering decisions.
Predicting the Occurrence of Channelized Debris Flow by an Integrated Cascading Model: A Case Study of a Small Debris Flow-Prone Catchment in Zhejiang Province, China

Abstract:Excessive water in a channel is an important factor that triggers channelized debris flows. Floods and debris flows often occur in a cascading manner, and thus, calculating the amount of runoff accurately is important for predicting the occurrence of debris flows. In order to explore the runoff-rainfall relationship, we placed two measuring facilities at the outlet of a small, debris flow-prone headwater catchment to explore the hydrological response of the catchment. The runoff responses generally consisted of a rapid increase in runoff followed by a slower decrease. The peak runoff often occurred after the rainfall ended. The runoff discharge data were simulated by two different modeling approaches, i.e., the NAM model and the Hydrologic Engineering Center-Hydrologic Modeling System (HEC-HMS) model. The results showed that the NAM model performed better than the HEC-HMS model. The NAM model provided acceptable simulations, while the HEC-HMS model did not. Then, we coupled the calculated results of the NAM model with an empirically based debris flow initiation model to obtain a new integrated cascading disaster modeling system to provide improved disaster preparedness and hazard management. In this case study, we found that the coupled model could correctly predict the occurrence of debris flows. Furthermore, we evaluated the effect of the range of input parameter values on the hydrographical shape of the runoff. We also used the grey relational analysis to conduct a sensitivity analysis of the parameters of the model. This study highlighted the important connections between rainfall, hydrological processes, and debris flow, and it provides a useful prototype model system for operational forecasting of debris flows.

Abstract:Debris flows induced by heavy rainfall are a major threat in Northwest and Southwest China, due to its abrupt occurrence and long runout. In light of this, this work presents the runout simulation and risk assessment of the Boshuigou debris flow under different rainfall conditions in Wudu district, Gansu Province, Northwest China. Based on field reconnaissance, the geomorphological feature and main source of the Boshuigou debris flow were described. With the application of the FLO-2D simulation, the potential flow depth and flow extent of the Boshuigou debris flow under 100-year return-period rainfall and 50-year return-period rainfall were calculated. The maximum flow velocities of the Boshuigou debris flow under the 100-year return-period rainfall and 50-year return-period rainfall were 5.46 and 5.18 m/s, respectively. Accordingly, the maximum flow depths were 5.85 and 5.57 m. Then, the hazard zonation was conducted in combination of the construction and other properties within the potential impact zone, and the risk assessment of the Boshuigou debris flow under the 100-year return-period rainfall and 50-year return-period rainfall was finally completed. This work presents a method for debris flow risk assessment considering the solid source and water flow, which can provide a basic reference for mitigation and reduction of geohazards induced by torrential rainfall.
A GIS-based Method for Flooded Area Calculation and Damage Evaluation

Abstract:Using geographic information system to study flooded area and damage evaluation has been a hotspot in environmental disaster research for years. In this paper, a model for flooded area calculation and damage evaluation is presented. Flooding is divided into two types: ‘soruce flood’ and ‘non-source flood’. The source-flood area calculation is based on seed spread algorithm. The flood damage evaluation is calculated by overlaying the flooded ara range with thematic maps and relating the results to other social and economic data. To raise the operational efficiency of the model, a skipping approach is used to speed seed spread algorithm and all thematic maps are converted to raster format before overlay analysis. The accuracy of flooded area calculation and damage evaluation is mainly dependent upon the resolution and precision of the digital elevation model (DEM) data, upon the accuracy of registering all raster layers, and upon the quality of economic information. This model has been successfully used in the Zhejiang Province Comprehensive Water Management Information System developed by the authors. The applications show that this model is especially useful for most counties of China and other developing countries.
Mitigation planning based on the prediction of river blocking by a typical large-scale debris flow in the Wenchuan earthquake area

Abstract:Due to scale amplification resulting from the blocking-bursting process associated with landslide dams in debris flow catchments, many of large-scale debris flows that occurred as a result of the Wenchuan earthquake blocked the main rivers and resulted in catastrophic dam-breaking floods. To decrease the damage caused by dam-breaking floods, mitigation works should be applied in debris flow gullies. Currently, few studies focus on how to determine the key parameters concerning the scale of debris flows (i.e., peak discharge and total volume) that need to be controlled for mitigation planning considering downstream objects affected by the flow. The Xiaojia debris flow is described and analyzed as a typical large-scale case from the Yingxiu area. A back-calculation method and numerical simulation were proposed for mitigation planning in Xiaojia gully based on predictions of river blocking. First, the maximum peak flood discharge that did not endanger the town of Yingxiu was calculated. Then, the permissible blockage from a debris flow was determined based on the back-calculation of a dam-breaking flood. Finally, the scale of the largest permissible debris flow was obtained for use in mitigation plans based on numerical simulations. The calculations showed that the peak discharge of a flood that would not endanger Yingxiu should be <1496.48 m3/s. Accordingly, based on the 1/3 and 1/2 breach modes, the permissible blocking height of a debris flow barrier dam should not exceed 43.09 and 31.64 m, respectively. The total volume and peak discharge of a single debris flow event should be controlled to not exceed 70.59 × 104 m3 and 784.59 m3/s for the 1/3 breach mode and 45.21 × 104 m3 and 551.77 m3/s for the 1/2 breach mode. Based on these determinations of the key debris flow parameters, the simulation results indicate that debris flow damage can be decreased to an acceptable level to ensure the safety of Yingxiu downstream by the implementation of two check dams in the downstream channel and a deposition works on the debris fan.

Abstract:Rat acute-phase alpha 2-macroglobulin (AP alpha 2M) concentration was measured by radioimmunoassay in maternal serum, fetal plasma, maternal liver, fetal liver, and amniotic fluid as a function of gestational and neonatal age. The concentration profiles of AP alpha 2M in maternal serum and fetal plasma displayed two peaks, one in early gestation and another during late gestation. Synthesis of AP alpha 2M was confirmed by the immunoprecipitation of [35S]methionine incorporated into cultures of selected tissues. The following observations were made. 1) Maternal serum concentrations of AP alpha 2M were higher than those observed in fetal plasma in early gestation. This was attributable to a high level of maternal AP alpha 2M synthesis in metrial gland which was absent in liver and moderate in yolk sac. 2) In late gestation fetal plasma concentrations of AP alpha 2M greatly exceeded those observed in maternal serum. This could be explained by the pronounced synthesis of AP alpha 2M in fetal liver that was not apparent in maternal liver or yolk sac. 3) During labor, a transient increase in AP alpha 2M concentration was observed in maternal serum and fetal plasma. 4) During lactation a moderately elevated maternal serum concentration of AP alpha 2M was maintained. 5) Amniotic fluid concentration of AP alpha 2M was very low throughout gestation, which indicated that the fetal glomerulus was relatively impermeable to this large protein. It is concluded that in early gestation a principal maternal source of AP alpha 2M appears to be the metrial gland, whereas in late gestation fetal liver is a major source of AP alpha 2M appearing in fetal plasma from where some of this macroglobulin is speculated to be transported to the maternal circulation.
A New Method to Evaluate the Combined Performance of Check Dams and Afforestation on Debris Flows Mitigation in a Dry-hot Valley

Abstract:Debris flows in waterways can transport large amounts of sediment downstream, which can cause serious damage and economic losses. The vegetation cover in the valley of the Xiaojiang River in Yunnan Province, China—classified as a dry-hot valley—was significantly reduced by logging in the 1950s. Soil erosion intensified and 107 gullies developed, which led to debris flows along the 86 km length of the river. Jiangjia Gully is a tributary of the Xiaojiang River. Historically, debris flows have occurred frequently, blocking the Xiaojiang River seven times between 1957 and 2000. Since 2000, the construction of check dams and afforestation have decreased the volume of debris flows in the three tributaries of Jiangjia Gully. However, different combinations of check dams and afforestation were adopted in the three tributaries of Jiangjia Gully, which has led to the different trends in debris flows behaviour. A new method was established to evaluate the mitigative effect of check dams and afforestation on debris flows. We found that the debris flow volume was proportional to the gravity energy of soil and rock on the gully bank and inversely proportional to the vegetation coverage in a dry-hot valley setting. The method revealed that under different gravity energy conditions, the implementation order of check dam construction and afforestation is important for debris flow mitigation.

Abstract:Check dams and afforestation are widely used to control debris flows; however, the combined effects of mitigation changes caused by sedimentation behind the check dams as well as the growth of vegetation are unclear. This paper reports long-term measurements of the erosion base level behind check dams along the Shengou gully, which is an active debris flow gully with 19 shallow soil landslides along its banks. The loose sediment on the shallow soil landslides, which is affected by afforestation, is the main source of material and energy for debris flows in this gully. The change in the mechanical properties of the loose sediment on the shallow soil landslides was determined. Based on the mechanical properties of the shallow soil landslides and the erosion base level behind the check dams, the volume and potential energy of the shallow soil landslide sediment were calculated. A model of the vegetation coverage, shallow soil landslide energy, and debris flow volume was established and applied to the Shengou gully. The results show that the model can evaluate the different benefits of check dams and afforestation on debris flow mitigation given the sedimentation behind the check dams and the vegetation growth.

Abstract:Check dams and afforestation are two common measures for debris-flow mitigation; however, there is a lack of methods allowing quantitative evaluation of check dam and afforestation effects on debris flow motion and deposition. Laogan Gully is an active debris-flow system with a large landslide on the right hillslope, currently representing the main source of debris flows in the catchment. Several debris flows have occurred since 1985 which led to the construction of check dams and the plantation of silver wattle (Acacia dealbata) trees between 1991 and 1993. These measures significantly reduced the volume of debris flows reaching downstream portions of the system. At the same time, large amounts of sediment were trapped on the gully bed and thereby increased the base level of the torrent, which again tended to stabilize the large landslide on the right hillslope. This paper analyzes sedimentation of debris-flow material on the gully bed and on the fan using 12 trial pits behind the check dams and 6 incised geological sections on the fan. The timing and extent of debris flow motion and deposition was reconstructed using scars and growth suppression events in the annual growth ring series of 306 Acacia trees trapped in the newly formed deposits. The gravitational potential energy of the sediment of the large landslide is calculated according to the change in the erosion base level behind the check dams. On the basis of these results, we constructed a semi-empirical vegetation coverage–landslide energy–debris flow volume model to quantitatively evaluate the effects of the check dams and afforestation on debris-flow mitigation. The model exhibited predictive capabilities for estimating the volume of debris flow generated by the reactivation of landslides. Check dams are found to play a major role in debris-flow mitigation in the early stages, whereas the Acacia trees play an increasingly important role once the check dams are filled. The partial resurgence of the landslide caused a sudden increase in the gravitational potential energy of the sediment source, which in turn affected the effectiveness of the debris-flow mitigation measures.

Abstract:<p>Check dams are an effective and widespread measure for soil and water conservation around the world (e.g., in the Chinese Loess Plateau). However, the quantitative impact of a heavy silted check dam with small remaining storage capacity and large deposition area on river flow and sediment transport during floods remained unclear. In this study, to investigate this impact, a physics‐based distributed hydrological model (the Integrated Hydrology Model, InHM) was employed to simulate runoff and sediment processes during floods in a small catchment with a check dam in the Loess Plateau, considering different heavy rainfalls and check‐dam remaining storages. The model was calibrated and validated against the observed hydrographs and sedigraphs in two flood events and obtained satisfactory modelling performance (the Nash‐Sutcliffe efficiencies > 0.70). The scenario modelling results showed that a heavy silted check dam still remarkably reduced and delayed the peaks of river flow and sediment rate, due to the attenuated surface flow movement and sediment transport on the deposition area. The largest flow peak occurred around the 85% silting stage of the check dam rather than the fully silting stage (100%). Even in the fully silted stage, sediment deposition continually occurred on the deposition area with a maximum deposition of 11700 t sediment in a heavy‐rainfall scenario and more sediment deposited on the tail‐end regions of the deposition area than other regions after a flood. Moreover, in heavy silted stage backwater on the tail‐end areas and gullies largely attenuated local erosion and promoted sediment deposition, indirectly reducing the total sediment yield of the catchment during flood. These results indicated that numerous aging check dams built in the Loess Plateau and worldwide are still useful to attenuate flood risk and soil erosion, and sound maintenance and management of the check‐dam will be beneficial to flood and soil erosion control.</p>

Abstract:On August 20, 2019, many catastrophic debris flows broke out in meizoseismal area of Wenchuan M s 8.0 earthquake in China under the influence of continuous heavy rainfall. This paper takes the Chutou gully debris flow event occurred on August 20, 2019 as an example. The 3-D numerical simulation software, RAMMS, is used to back calculate the event and predict the future hazard. Coulomb and viscous turbulent friction, μ and ξ are calibrated in RAMMS. Numerical simulation reveals the movement process of Chutou gully from the aspects of flow depth, velocity, discharge, and run-out solid materials volume. The simulation results show that more than two-thirds of the solid materials are still deposited in the main channel, which could provide material basis for the re-occurrence of high hazard debris flow. In addition, based on the intensity and probability of debris flow, the hazard of debris flow is divided into high, middle, and low degrees. According to the simulation results and hazard assessment model, the hazard map of Chutou gully debris flow in various rainstorm return periods (20, 50, 100, and 200 years) is established, which can provide guidance for the future land-use planning and debris flow prevention works.
