Abstract:Ultralong organic room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials have attracted great attention recently due to its diverse application potentials. Several ultralong organic RTP materials mimicking the host-guest architecture of inorganic systems have been exploited successfully. However, complicated synthesis and high expenditure are still inevitable in these cases. Herein, we develop a series of novel host–guest organic phosphore systems, in which all chromophores are electron-rich, commercially available and halogen atom free. The maximum phosphorescence efficiency and the longest lifetime reach at 23.6% and 362 ms, respectively. Most importantly, experimental results and theoretical calculation indicate that the host molecules not only play a vital role in providing a rigid environment to suppress non-radiative decay of the guest, but also show a synergistic effect to the guest through Förster energy transfer (FERT). The commercial availability, facile preparation and unique properties also make these new host-guest materials an excellent candidate for anti-counterfeiting devices.

Abstract:Abstract Purely organic room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) has attracted wide attention recently due to its various application potentials. However, ultralong RTP (URTP) with high efficiency is still rarely achieved. Herein, by dissolving 1,8-naphthalic anhydride in certain organic solid hosts, URTP with a lifetime of over 600 ms and overall quantum yield of over 20% is realized. Meanwhile, the URTP can also be achieved by mechanical excitation when the host is mechanoluminescent. Femtosecond transient absorption studies reveal that intersystem crossing of the host is accelerated substantially in the presence of a trace amount of 1,8-naphthalic anhydride. Accordingly, we propose that a cluster exciton spanning the host and guest forms as a transient state before the guest acts as an energy trap for the RTP state. The cluster exciton model proposed here is expected to help expand the varieties of purely organic URTP materials based on an advanced understanding of guest/host combinations.

Abstract:Room-temperature phosphorescence（RTP） materials have attracted great attention due to their involvement of excited triplet states and comparatively long decay lifetimes.In this short review,recent progress on enhancement of RTP from purely organic materials is summarized.According to the mechanism of phosphorescence emission,two principles are discussed to construct efficient RTP materials:one is promoting intersystem crossing（ISC） efficiency by using aromatic carbonyl,heavyatom,or/and heterocycle/heteroatom containing compounds;the other is suppressing intramolecular motion and intermolecular collision which can quench excited triplet states,including embedding phosphors into polymers and packing them tightly in crystals.With aforementioned strategies,RTP from purely organic materials was achieved both in fluid and rigid media.

Abstract:The study of purely organic room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) has drawn increasing attention because of its considerable theoretical research and practical application value. Currently, organic RTP materials with both high efficiency (Φ<sub>P</sub> > 20%) and a long lifetime (τ<sub>P</sub> > 10 s) in air are still scarce due to the lack of related design guidance. Here, a new strategy to increase the phosphorescence performance of organic materials by integrating the RTP host and RTP guest in one doping system to form a triplet exciplex, is reported. With these materials, the high-contrast labeling of tumors in living mice and encrypted patterns in thermal printing are both successfully realized by taking advantage of both the long afterglow time (up to 25 min in aqueous media) and high phosphorescence efficiency (43%).

Excellent Persistent Near‐Infrared Room Temperature Phosphorescence from Highly Efficient Host–Guest Systems

Abstract:The persistent near‐infrared (NIR) room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) is achieved by doping NIR phosphors (guest) into visible RTP materials (host) as a new type of host–guest system, with ten‐folds increase of RTP lifetimes. The spatial matching of hosts and guests is proven as the crucial factor for the first time, which can efficiently suppress nonradiative transitions by space restriction, promoting RTP emission. Organic near‐infrared (NIR) room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials become a hot topic in bioimaging and biosensing for the large penetration depth and high signal‐to‐background ratio (SBR). However, it is challenging to achieve persistent NIR phosphorescence for severe nonradiative transitions by energy‐gap law. Herein, a universal system with persistent NIR RTP is built by visible (host) and NIR phosphorescence (guest) materials, which can efficiently suppress the nonradiative transitions by rigid environment of crystalline host materials with good matching, and further promote phosphorescence emission by the additional phosphorescence resonance energy transfer (≈100%) between them. The persistent NIR phosphorescence with ten‐folds enhancement of RTP lifetimes, compared to those of guest luminogens, can be achieved by modulation of aggregated structures of host–guest systems. This work provides a convenient way to largely prolong the phosphorescence lifetimes of various NIR luminogens, promoting their application in afterglow imaging with deeper penetration and higher SBRs.

Abstract:Room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) with long afterglow from pure organic materials has attracted great attention for its potential applications in biological imaging, digital encryption, optoelectronic devices, and so on. Organic materials have been long considered to be nonphosphorescent owing to their weak molecular spin-orbit coupling and high sensitivity to temperature. However, recently, some purely organic compounds have demonstrated highly efficient RTP with long afterglow upon aggregation, while others fail. Namely, it remains a challenge to expound on the underlying mechanisms. In this study, we present the molecular descriptors to characterize the phosphorescence efficiency and lifetime. For a prototypical RTP system consisting of a carbonyl group and π-conjugated segments, the excited states can be regarded as an admixture of n → π* (with portion α) and π → π* (portion β). Starting from the phosphorescent process and El-Sayed rule, we deduced that (i) the intersystem crossing (ISC) rate of S1 → T n is mostly governed by the modification of the product of α and β and (ii) the ISC rate of T1 → S0 is determined by the β value of T1. Thus, the descriptors (γ = α × β, β) can be employed to describe the RTP character of organic molecules. From hybrid quantum mechanics and molecular mechanics (QM/MM) calculations, we illustrated the relationships among the descriptors (γ, β), phosphorescence efficiency and lifetime, and spin-orbit coupling constants. We stressed that the large γ and β values are favorable for the strong and long-lived RTP in organic materials. Experiments have reported confirmations of these molecular design rules.
Highly Efficient Red/Near-Infrared Phosphorescence from Doped Crystals

Abstract:Organic red/near-infrared (NIR) room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials with low toxicity and facile synthesis are highly sought after, particularly for applications in biotechnology and encryption. However, achieving efficient red/NIR RTP emitters has been challenging due to the weak spin-orbit coupling of organics and the rapid nonradiative decay imposed by the energy gap law. Here we demonstrate highly efficient red/ NIR RTP with boosted quantum yields (Φp) of up to 32.96% through doping the thionated derivatives of phthalimide (PAI) (MTPAI and DTPAI) into PAI crystals. The red-shifted photoluminescence (PL) stems from a combination of the external heavy atom effect and the formation of emissive clusters centered around electron-rich sulfur atoms. Furthermore, the dopants enhance exciton generation efficiency and facilitate energy transfer from smaller PAI units to larger aggregates, leading to dramatically increased Φp. This strategy proves universal, opening possibilities for acquiring long-wavelength RTP with tunable photophysical properties. The doped crystals exhibit promising applications in optical waveguides and encryption paper/ink. This research provides a practical approach to obtaining long-wavelength RTP materials and offers valuable insights into the mechanisms governing host-guest systems.

Abstract:Recently, there has been remarkable progress of the host-guest doped pure organic room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials. However, it remains a great challenge to develop highly efficient host-guest doping systems. In this study, we have successfully developed a heavy atom free pure organic molecular doped system (benzophenone-thianthrene, respectively) with efficient RTP through a simple host-guest doping strategy. Furthermore, by optimizing the doping ratios, the host-guest material with a molar ratio of 100:1 presented an efficient RTP emission with 46% quantum efficiency and a long lifetime of up to 9.17 ms under ambient conditions. This work will provide an effective way to design new organic doping systems with RTP.

Abstract:Organic room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials possess immense potential for a variety of applications. However, conventional RTP materials face substantial problems, such as no phosphorescence in ambient solution, and inefficient amorphous films and electroluminescence devices. To address these issues, intrinsic RTP emitters can display efficient RTP in various states and achieve multiple desired properties through the same molecule. In this work, dendrimers are first used to design of efficient intrinsic RTP materials by incorporating dendrons as triplet regulators to facilitate effective spin-orbit coupling, intersystem crossing, and triplet radiative transitions that exhibit a significant transformation from delayed fluorescence to intrinsic RTP in different states. The dendrimers exhibit long phosphorescence lifetime within milliseconds in ambient solution, photoluminescence quantum yield of 98% in doped films, and substantially high external quantum efficiency of 25.1% in the organic electroluminescence devices. Moreover, by regulating the triplet characteristics of the dendrimers, the dendrimers display up-converted anti-Kasha dual-RTP emissions and an ultra-long afterglow lifetime within seconds in rigid polymer matrixes. These results pave the way for the development of novel RTP systems for versatile optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:Abstract Organic room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) has significant potential in various applications of information storage, anti-counterfeiting, and bio-imaging. However, achieving robust organic RTP emission of the single-component system is challenging to overcome the restriction of the crystalline state or other rigid environments with cautious treatment. Herein, we report a single-component system with robust persistent RTP emission in various aggregated forms, such as crystal, fine powder, and even amorphous states. Our experimental data reveal that the vigorous RTP emissions rely on their tight dimers based on strong and large-overlap π - π interactions between polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) groups. The dimer structure can offer not only excitons in low energy levels for visible-light excited red long-lived RTP but also suppression of the nonradiative decays even in an amorphous state for good resistance of RTP to heat (up to 70 °C) or water. Furthermore, we demonstrate the water-dispersible nanoparticle with persistent RTP over 600 nm and a lifetime of 0.22 s for visible-light excited cellular and in-vivo imaging, prepared through the common microemulsion approach without overcaution for nanocrystal formation.

Abstract:Organic room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials have been used in high-resolution imaging. However, the development of long-wavelength-emission RTP materials in aqueous solution remains a challenge. Here, we report red-emissive RTP materials via integration of the ring-fusing effect and host-guest interaction. The fused-ring guest molecule showed a low triplet state for long-wavelength emission, and the host molecule can bridge the huge energy gap between the triplet and singlet state of guest molecules for highly efficient intersystem crossing processes. The fused-ring host-guest material showed red emission with a long lifetime up to 274 ms because of enhanced conjugation and restriction of intramolecular motion. The well-dispersed phosphorescent nanoparticles (NPs) with a uniform size of approximately 200 nm show good biocompatibility and low cytotoxicity. The NPs are applied to time-resolved luminescence imaging to eliminate background fluorescence interference in vitro and in vivo. [GRAPHICS] .

Abstract:The design and characterization of purely organic room-temperature phosphorescent (RTP) materials for optoelectronic applications is currently the focus of research in the field of organic electronics. Particularly, with the merits of preparation controllability and modulation flexibility, host-guest material systems are encouraging candidates that can prepare high-performance RTP materials. By regulating the interaction between host and guest molecules, it can effectively control the quantum efficiency, luminescent lifetime, and color of host-guest RTP materials, and even produce RTP emission with stimuli-responsive features, holding tremendous potential in diverse applications such as encryption and anti-counterfeiting, organic light-emitting diodes, sensing, optical recording, etc. Here a roundup of rapid achievement in construction strategies, molecule systems, and diversity of applications of host-guest material systems is outlined. Intrinsic correlations between the molecular properties and a survey of recent significant advances in the development of host-guest RTP materials divided into three systems including rigid matrix, exciplex, and sensitization are presented. Providing an insightful understanding of host-guest RTP materials and offering a promising platform for high throughput screening of RTP systems with inherent advantages of simple material preparation, low-cost, versatile resource, and controllably modulated properties for a wide range of applications is intended.

Abstract:Room-temperature phosphorescent (RTP) materials have attracted more and more attention due to their long luminescence life and large Stokes displacement. Host-guest doping systems are highly regarded for their simplicity of preparation and the absence of complex synthesis processes. Strong RTP emission can be activated by the doping of a guest molecules, in particular by substituting the phenyl group in the host structure with a naphthalene group. In this study, derivatives of benzophenone were constructed as the host molecule, and used 2-Benzoylnaphthalene, a commercially available naphthyl-substituted analogue of benzophenone, as the guest molecule. The phosphorescent lifetime of the doped system can reach 335 ms and the phosphorescent quantum yield can reach 58 %, which is expected to be used in anti-counterfeiting encryption, biological imaging and other fields. This work provides a general and effective host-guest doping strategy for constructing various organic room temperature phosphorescent materials.

Abstract:Heterofission is an essential process in pure organic room temperature phosphorescence materials, leading to the ultrafast formation of triplet exciton. Suitable host and guest candidates are designed according to their molecular orbital nature. Room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) from pure organic materials, whether in crystalline or film phases, has recently attracted considerable attention. Experimental evidence increasingly suggests that RTP originates from isomeric dopants (impurity) rather than pure compounds. The underlying mechanism and molecular design principles have remained elusive. Herein, the "heterofission mechanism" for RTP is proposed, wherein a singlet excited state is split into two triplets, one remains within the host, while the other migrates to the guest (dopant) molecule, satisfying Ehost(S1) ≈ Ehost(T1) + Eguest(T1). It is found that all the dopants possess a low triplet excited state, meeting the energy requirement for the heterofission process. The sum of the calculated emission spectra from these two triplets overlaps well with the experimentally measured broad phosphorescent spectra. Furthermore, the calculated heterofission rates are expected to occur at the picosecond timescale. Efficient Dexter energy transfer leads to the guest predominantly dominating the RTP. Based on this mechanism, we can predict potential host and guest candidates to expand the family of pure organic RTP materials.

Phosphine-Manipulated p-p and p-p Synergy Enables Efficient Ultralong Organic Room-Temperature Phosphorescence

Abstract:Organic room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) attracts extensive attentions, but still faces the challenge of achieving both high RTP efficiencies (?(RTP)) and long lifetimes (t(RTP)), due to the intrinsic contradiction between triplet radiation and stabilization. In this work, we developed three carbazole-triphenylphosphine hybrids named xCzTPP, in which phosphine groups provide nonbonding electrons and steric hindrance to modulate intermolecular p-p and p-p interactions. With the rational orientations and spatial positions of functional groups, para-substituted pCzTPP achieves high ?(RTP) over 10 % and more than twofold increased t(RTP) (>600 ms), compared to ortho- and meta- isomers. Theoretical simulation and photophysical investigation indicate that the strongest intermolecular p-p and p-p electronic interplays of pCzTPP harmonize high transition probability of (3)pp state and triplet stability of (3)pp state, reflecting the p-p and p-p synergy in RTP process.
Unveiling the mechanisms of organic room-temperature phosphorescence in various surrounding environments: a computational study

Abstract:Room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) from pure organic materials has been promising in next-generation OLEDs. Understanding the photophysical properties of RTP molecules is attractive but challenging. In this study, through a combined quantum mechanics and molecular mechanics (QM/MM) method taking 2-(3,4-dimethoxybenzyl)isoindoline-1,3-dione (complex b) as an example, we comparatively investigate the photophysical properties of complex b in diverse environments (solution, crystal, and amorphous). From solution to amorphous to crystal phase, the excited-state decay rates for the molecule indicate that the AIE phenomenon of complex b is mainly induced by the increased phosphorescence rates. However, the increased nonradiative decay rate knr of T1 → S0 from the solution to the crystal phase could be attributed to the different electron coupling in the crystal phase. Moreover, the theoretical results also show that the small energy gap between the lowest singlet excited state (S1) and triplet excited state (T1) and low reorganization energy can help enhance intersystem crossing to facilitate a more competitive radiative process from the T1 state to ground state (S0). Additionally, the stronger intermolecular π-π interaction can cause high phosphorescence quantum efficiency in the crystalline phase. Our study presents a rational explanation for aggregation-induced RTP, which is beneficial for the design of new organic RTP materials in the future.
Delayed Room Temperature Phosphorescence Enabled by Phosphines

Abstract:AbstractOrganic ultralong room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) usually emerges instantly and immediately decays after excitation removal. Here we report a new delayed RTP that is postponed by dozens of milliseconds after excitation removal and decays in two steps including an initial increase in intensity followed by subsequent decrease in intensity. The delayed RTP is achieved through introduction of phosphines into carbazole emitters. In contrast to the rapid energy transfer from single-molecular triplet states (T1) to stabilized triplet states (Tn*) of instant RTP systems, phosphine groups insert their intermediate states (TM) between carbazole-originated T1 and Tn* of carbazole-phosphine hybrids. In addition to markedly increasing emission lifetimes by ten folds, since TM → Tn* transition require >30 milliseconds, RTP is thereby postponed by dozens of milliseconds. The emission character of carbazole-phosphine hybrids can be used to reveal information through combining instant and delayed RTP, realizing multi-level time resolution for advanced information, biological and optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:Abstract Organic room temperature phosphorescence materials (RTP) have attracted much attention for their wide application in organic light‐emitting diodes, anti‐counterfeiting, and sensors. In this work, a series of organic luminogens containing carbonyl and aromatics were fixed in a three‐dimensional polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) network by in situ polymerization. All organic luminogens‐doped in situ PMMA ( s ‐PMMA) columns achieved longer RTP lifetimes than those of doped commercial PMMA ( c ‐PMMA) films, especially, the RTP lifetime of NMP2O in these PMMA matrixes increased from 1.82 ms to 156.34 ms by about 86 times. It is mainly due to the restriction of molecular motions by highly entangled polymer chains and rigid environments to efficiently inhibit the non‐radiative transitions. Also, the excellent shielding effect toward oxygen by the in situ polymerization process can avoid possible quenching effects on triplet excited states, beneficial to RTP emission. Thus, it affords an efficient approach to achieving persistent RTP for three‐dimensional displaying applications.
