Action on mouth cancer: restoring access to NHS dentistry

Abstract:Watt and colleagues' editorial on the rise of oral cancers in the UK is sobering.1 A recent review of the literature found that UK public awareness of mouth cancer risk factors and signs and symptoms remains low, even with an increase in the incidence of mouth cancer.2 Launch of the Mouth Cancer Action Charter,3 the Head and Neck Cancer UK Coalition,4 and the HPV Coalition5 over the past few years provides exciting opportunities to target this lack of awareness and to implement change.In response to the Health and Social Care Committee inquiry into NHS dentistry, the UK government reiterated a bold ambition that NHS dentistry should be accessible and available to all who need it.6 But there is no apparent evidence of the required urgency and ambition to deliver that objective.The recent policy briefing from the Nuffield Trust highlighted the dire picture facing NHS dentistry.
