Abstract:A method for reducing endotoxin contamination in various solutions by immobilized histidine is described. Immobilized histidine is a porous adsorbent suitable for the adsorption of endotoxin with a high affinity over a wide range of pH and temperature and at low ionic strength (gamma/2 less than or equal to 0.1). When a purified endotoxin originating from Escherichia coli UKT‐B was studied, the apparent dissociation constant between endotoxin and the adsorbent was 7.3 × 10(‐13) M. The adsorbent was able to remove various kinds of endotoxin originating from gram‐negative bacteria; the concentration of endotoxin was reduced from 1000 to less than 0.01 ng/ml in water. It is shown that the adsorbent specifically adsorbs endotoxin provided that the adsorption conditions are properly selected. Some examples of the specific removal of endotoxin from high‐molecular‐weight physiologically active substances such as tumor necrosis factor and lysozyme are shown.
Effect of freezing temperature on dewatering, consolidation properties, and microstructure of landfill sludge

Abstract:There is currently a considerable amount of landfill sludge (LS) accumulating worldwide, threatening the surrounding environment and land safety. It is urgent to dewater and reduce LS. Chemical conditioning is the most common treatment for LS, which can pollute the environment and limit resource exploitation. Therefore, a more environmentally friendly and efficient freeze-thaw combined vacuum preloading method is proposed. Experimental studies were conducted to investigate the influence of different freezing temperatures on the dewatering properties, compression and consolidation features, and the mechanism of microstructural change in LS. The results show that the freezing temperature has an important influence on the dewatering, compression, vacuum drainage, consolidation, and microstructure characteristics of LS. The compressibility of LS does not improve when the freezing rate is too high. Freeze-thaw cycles can improve sludge's permeability and consolidation properties by one to two orders of magnitude, and a suitable freezing temperature can significantly improve sludge's permeability and consolidation properties. After vacuum drainage and consolidation, the maximum volume reduction ratio of sludge can reach 55.3%, and the water content of LS can be reduced from 86% to 66%. The distribution of large pores and mesopores in LS increases as the freezing temperature decreases, reaching a maximum of -15 °C, which can substantially improve permeability, drainage, and consolidation efficiency.

Abstract:Due to the low permeability layers formed around drainage plates under conditions of sew-age sludge vacuum preloading can decrease the dewatering efficiency,vacuum filtration installations and tests are used to simulate and study the inhibition effects on the low permeability layers, taking two methods of adding different chemical conditioners into the sludge above the filter ( 0 to 5 cm ) and changing pore-opening size of geotexiles. During the filtration process, cumulative amount of filtration(CAF),filtration rate(FR), and solid content(SC) are calculated;after the test, sludge re-sidual water content( SRWC) is obtained by slicing the sludge samples at different heights. The re-sults indicate that the enlargement of geotexile pore size can not improve the dewatering efficiency, and the low permeability layer are formed in 1 h after the test. The utilization of ferric chloride, lime , and fly ash at vicinity area of filter shows the best dewatering efficiency and inhibits the forma-tion of low permeability layer, getting a water content of 200% ( dry basis) at vicinity area of filter (0 to 3 cm) . And the conditioners of ferric chloride with cationic polyacrylamide or chitosan obtain a water content of 250% ( dry basis) at vicinity area of filter (0 to 3 cm) . In actual engineering, the combination of ferric chloride, lime, and fly ash can be used efficiently.
Study On Consolidation Behaviors Of Waste Slurry By Using Vacuum Filtration Test

Abstract:Waste slurry is an inevitable product of construction and is characterized by high water content, high content of fine particles, high void ratio, and extremely low strength. Its treatment requires consideration of the economic and environmental implications. In this paper, vacuum filtration test was conducted indoor to investigate the effect of volume reduction and consolidation behaviors of waste slurry. The monitored parameters included the filtration rate, height of slurry surface, solid content of filtrate, and moisture content of slurry column after testing. The effect of vacuum filtration is remarkable: the volume of slurry (desanding) and slurry (with sand) decreased by 80% and 63.3% respectively after 10 days' test, the filtrate was comparatively clear and the solid content were only 0.17% and 0.14%, and the moisture content of the bottom of the slurry column was reduced to 53.31% and 45.97% respectively, which is equivalent to the moisture content of the soft soil.

Abstract:The electro-osmosis-combined-preloading method is considered very promising in soft soil improvement, while the uncertainty in the function mechanism has hindered its practical application. To explore the mechanism of the combined method, experiments concerning the single electro-osmosis method and the combined method were carried out using reclaimed sludge. Macroscopic and microscopic properties of the soil were explored and compared. Drainage, soil settlement, soil water content and soil pore structure were detected during the experiments. The total drainage and average settlement of the combined method were, respectively, 20.8% and 34.5% greater than that of the single electro-osmosis method. The average void ratio of soils treated by the combined method was 13.8% lower than that by the electro-osmosis method. Moreover, reduction rates of the soil water content are found higher than that of the apparent void ratio for each method. It can be concluded that the combined method had better performances, both from the macroscopic and microscopic views. Furthermore, a theoretical analysis demonstrated that soil was desaturated and the soil shrinkage volume was lower than the drained water volume during electro-osmosis. This is derived from the essence of electro-osmosis, which determines that considerable pores formerly occupied by drained water cannot be effectively compressed. The combined method can fully use the advantages of the single methods by active drainage through electro-osmosis and further compression of the soil skeleton through preloading. Therefore, the electro-osmosis-combined-preloading method was strongly recommended for reclaimed sludge strengthening.
Experimental Investigation on Shear Strength and Permeability of a Deeply Dewatered Sewage Sludge for Use in Landfill Covers

Abstract:This paper presents an experimental study on a deeply dewatered sewage sludge produced by using a new technique of membrane filter press. The experiments involve measurements of sludge composition, basic physical properties, shear strength, water permeability, and leaching toxicity. The measurements of shear strength and permeability were also performed on the sludge specimens soaked in a low acid leachate or distilled water for 1 and 2 months. This is to investigate the influence of chemical change in pore fluid as a result of rainfall infiltration or leachate seepage at landfills. Comparison tests were also carried out on silty clay that is commonly used for landfill cover material. The experimental results show that the deeply dewatered sludge contains 66 % organic content and 85 % water content (dry mass basis). The undrained shear strength of the sludge is >25 kPa even after 2-month soaking in the leachate and distilled water, meeting the requirement of the Chinese standard [CJ/T249-2007, Disposal of sludge from municipal wastewater treatment plant: sludge quality for co-landfilling. Ministry of Building and Construction, P.R. China (in Chinese), 2007]. The measured cohesion and friction angle for the sludge are >20 kPa and 22.3°, respectively. The soaking of sludge specimens in either leachate or distilled water resulted in an increase in frictional angle by several degrees. The water permeability for the sludge ranges from 0.68 × 10−8 to 1.3 × 10−8 cm/s, and permeability after 2-month soaking is less than the minimum requirement for the barrier layer of landfill covers (i.e., 1.0 × 10−7 cm/s). The concentrations of heavy metals leaching from the dewatered sludge are lower than the limit values of leaching toxicity for the wastewater discharge standard of China. The experimental results indicate that deeply dewatered sludge can be used as an alternative material for the barrier layer of landfill covers.
Effect of FeCl3-conditioning on Consolidation Property of Sewage Sludge and Vacuum Preloading Test with Integrated PVDs at the Changan Landfill, China

Abstract:Extremely soft sewage sludge lagoon exists in many landfills of municipal solid wastes in China. A two-staged in-situ treatment method, vacuum preloading on the conditioned sludge combined with subsequent cement solidification treatment, was proposed to improve the sludge ground. In this study, vacuum filtration tests and oedometer tests were firstly performed to investigate the effect of FeCl3-conditioning on the consolidation performance of sewage sludge. Then a pilot test was carried out in the field to examine the effectiveness of vacuum preloading on the FeCl3-conditioned sludge by using an integrated type of PVD. The test results demonstrated that the coefficient of consolidation increased with more percentage of FeCl3 added. For the sludge sample conditioned with 10% of FeCl3 (dry basis), the coefficient of consolidation increased to 4 x 10(-5)-1.2 x 10(-4) cm(2)/s, which was four-nine times greater than that of the non-conditioned sludge. 68 days' vacuum preloading on the 3.2 m thick sludge pit resulted in a magnitude of 70.9% in the average degree of consolidation and a reduction by 47.5% in the total volume of sludge. The water content of the sludge reduced from the initial 860% to 140%-450%. The undrained shear strength of the consolidated sludge with a water content of 140% was about 10 kPa, and decreased sharply with a further increase in water content. The integrated type of PVDs used in the pilot test showed a good performance with respect to the discharge capacity and the resistance against chemical corrosion. Comparative analyses show that the proposed two-staged in situ treatment method has advantages over the sole cement solidification method with respect to cost saving and environment protection. Effect of initial water content on the dewatering performance of freeze-thaw preconditioned landfill sludge

Abstract:Freeze-thawing (F/T) is an effective method of sludge dewatering preconditioning and has been studied in many studies. However, previous studies have taken landfill sludge from different regions, filled for different length of time or at different depth, resulting in large differences in initial water content and different treatment effects. Therefore, the effect of initial water content on the dewatering characteristics of F/T preconditioned landfill sludge has been investigated. The sludge with different initial water contents was firstly preconditioned by one F/T cycle. Then the F/T sludge was vacuum filtered and compared with the dewatering performance of FeCl3 preconditioned sludge with the same water content. Finally, the mechanism of the initial water content on the effect of F/T preconditioning was analyzed by the change of sludge internal composition. The results show that the higher the initial water content of the sludge, the greater the improvement of its dewatering performance after F/T preconditioning. The specific resistance and water content after filtration of sludge after F/T conditioning decreased greatly with the increase of the initial water content, reaching their respective minimum values of 13.3 × 1012 m/kg and 58.3% at 85% and 87.5%. These values are lower than the optimal values observed for the sludge conditioned by FeCl3. With the rise in initial water content, the driving force at the ice-water interface gains strength. Small particles aggregate into larger flocs, forming stable drainage channels that enhance the dewatering performance of sludge. Once the initial water content surpasses 85%, the squeezing force exerted by ice crystals amplifies the degree of cracking in sludge particles, releasing bound water and further decreasing the water content of sludge.
The Effect of Initial Water Content on the Consolidation of Dredged Slurry under Vacuum Preloading

Abstract:In the process of treating the dredged slurry under vacuum preloading combined with the prefabricated vertical drains (PVDs), a dense "soil column" with low permeability will be formed around the PVD, which results in a poor drainage condition and an unsatisfactory treatment (i.e., the clogging effect). In this study, in order to predict the consolidation behavior of dredged slurry with different initial water contents, the compressibility and permeability of dredged slurry with different initial water contents are investigated. Based on the compression and permeability curves obtained by laboratory tests, the analytical solution to soil consolidation under vacuum preloading is derived. Both the clogging effect and the effect of the initial water content on the initial effective stress are considered. The developed analytical solution is validated through a series of consolidation tests of dredged slurry under vacuum preloading with different initial water contents. It shows that at a given vacuum preloading, the dissipation rate of excess pore water pressure in the dredged slurry decreases as the initial water content increases. The proposed analytical solution presents reliable predictions on the variation of settlement and degree of consolidation with time in the dredged slurry with different initial water contents under vacuum preloading.

Abstract:To improve the consolidation of dredged slurry, a combined method of vacuum preloading and electro-osmosis consolidation was applied to a dredged slurry pre-treated with flocculants. In this study, the optimal mixing ratio of two conventional inorganic flocculants was determined by conducting a settling column test. A vacuum preloading and electro-osmosis test was then carried out on the dredged soil after flocculating the soil particles. During the test, the drainage mass and surface settlement were monitored. After the test, the soil moisture content, shear strength, and soil particle size were measured. The test results show that the inorganic flocculant FeCl3 has a better flocculation effect than Al2(SO4)3, and its optimum value is 0.75% in terms of the soil dry weight. The addition of flocculants effectively increased the soil particle size, alleviated the clogging of drainage channels and PVDs (plastic vertical drains), and accelerated the drainage rate. Moreover, the electrical conductivity and electro-kinetic dewatering were improved, thereby increasing the shear strength and soil uniformity.

Abstract:As dredged slurry has high water content and low shear strength, and mainly consists of fine-grained particles, clogging frequently occurs around prefabricated vertical drains (PVDs) during vacuum preloading, often leading to insufficient consolidation and poor geotechnical properties of soil. To address this issue, this paper proposes a method of multiple-flocculant treatment combined with vacuum preloading for improving dredged slurry. This is achieved by pre-treating the dredged slurry with lime and anionic polyacrylamide (APAM) prior to vacuum preloading. In this method, the additions of lime and APAM in a certain quantity allow small particles to form larger-sized mass, i.e. they flocculate, thereby increasing the void ratio and permeability. This results in the formation of a new natural soil that is easier to be consolidated by vacuum preloading. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, the optimum ratio of lime content to APAM content was preliminarily determined by performing a deposition experiment. A vacuum preloading test was carried out after the pre-treatment with lime and APAM. The experimental results show that with the help of APAM, the shear strength and consolidation efficiency further improve in comparison to the slurry treated with only lime. Finally, the optimum ratio of lime to APAM contents for vacuum preloading was determined as 2:0.1.
Insights into the dewatering of excavated landfill sludge conditioned by polyferric silicate sulfate

Abstract:Large quantities of landfill sludge (LS) with higher water content (WC) were stored underground, and excavation and re-dewatering of LS is a sustainable and economic strategy to save landfill space and reduce the leaching of contaminants. In this study, polyferric silicate sulfate (PFSS) was first applied in the conditioning of excavated LS, and the effects of the Si/Fe mass ratio and PFSS dosage on physicochemical properties, dewaterability and rheological properties were investigated. At the best Si/Fe of 0.18, PFSS conditioning obtained compact aggregates with the strongest internal structure, thus achieving the lowest WC. Large sludge flocs were formed, and slime and loosely-bound extracellular polymeric substances were effectively removed with the PFSS dosage above 100 mg/g dried solids, which made the WC to be lower than 51.4%. The whole mechanical compression process of conditioned LS can be described by the modified Terzaghi-Voigt model, and increasing the PFSS dosage induced the release of bound water and migration of the consolidation stage from ternary to secondary. PFSS is an economically sustainable conditioner for LS, integrating multiple functions such as charge neutralization, particle aggregation, interparticle bridging and skeleton building in one chemical.

Abstract:ABSTRACT: In China, sewage sludge from wastewater treatment plants is usually disposed in sludge lagoons in municipal solid waste landfills. The increasing amount of sewage sludge generated has become a serious environmental problem. A two-stage method called ‘vacuum preloading combined with chemical conditioning’ is proposed to treat the disposed sludge. This study presents a case study of full-scale field implementation of the method in a sludge lagoon at the Changan landfill, China. In the first stage, the chemical conditioner was injected into the sludge to improve its consolidation property. The effect of chemical conditioning on dewaterability of sludge was evaluated based on the vacuum filtration test. In the second stage, prefabricated vertical drains (PVDs) were installed in the sludge lagoon as a drainage path, and vacuum pressure was exerted on the conditioned sludge through the PVDs. After 4 months of vacuum preloading, the settlement of the 7 m thick sludge lagoon was approximately 2.91 m, and the volume of the sludge was reduced by 40%. The measurements of pore pressures in the PVDs showed that no attenuation took place for the distribution of vacuum pressure along the PVDs during the test, even when the axial strain of the PVD was 40%. The measurements of pore pressures away from the PVDs showed that pore water pressures in the sludge did not dissipate with respect to the hydrostatic pore water pressures. During the vacuum preloading of conditioned sludge, the degree of consolidation Up based on pore pressure was significantly lower than Us based on settlement.
Combination of Vacuum Preloading and Lime Treatment for Improvement of Dredged Fill

Abstract:Numerous land reclamation projects that utilise dredged fill are currently being executed in the eastern regions of China to cater to the demands of economic development and address the land shortage problem. However, the dredged fill has high water content, low shear strength, and mainly consists of fine-grained particles. A long period is thus normally required for the treatment of dredge fill by vacuum preloading, and clogging always occurs around the prefabricated vertical drains (PVDs), resulting in insufficient consolidation of the soil. To address this issue, combination of vacuum preloading and lime treatment is proposed in this paper. In this method, a certain percentage of hydrated lime (Ca(OH)2) is added into the dredge fill slurry before vacuum preloading, to enhance the engineering properties of the fill, such as the shear strength and permeability. The added hydrated lime would induce cation exchange on the clay surface and flocculation of the fine soil particles. As a result, this method would significantly mitigate the risk of clogging around the PVDs with the enhanced soil permeability, thereby improving the consolidation efficiency. In this study, dredged slurry with a water content of approximately 187% was utilised. Lime modification optimum (LMO) was first determined using the vacuum preloading method, and a comparison test was then conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. It was found that, compared to the conventional vacuum preloading method, the proposed method significantly increased the vane shear strength of all the soil layers, especially the deep soil layers, and afforded a higher consolidation rate.

Abstract:Dredging slurry is treated by a combination of lime treatment and vacuum preloading. However, the mechanical characteristics and consolidation mechanics of lime-treated slurry under vacuum loading is not fully understood, making it difficult to predict slurry settlement. In this study, we develop a laboratory model of lime-treated slurry and subject it to vacuum preloading to investigate the compression and consolidation behaviors. The results demonstrate the reduction of the risk of clogging around the prefabricated vertical drains, the increase in soil permeability, and the improvement of vacuum preloading upon lime treatment. log (1 + e)-log p curves for soils with different percentages of lime content are obtained through a series of modified oedometer tests. Based on these curves, an analytical solution for lime-treated slurry settlement under vacuum preloading was derived and validated through laboratory tests. The solution can be used to predict lime-treated slurry settlement under vacuum pressure effectively.

Abstract:Vacuum-electroosmosis is a common method of foundation treatment; however, it is disadvantaged by fine soil particles clogging the drainage plate. To overcome this issue, this study treated the dredged fill from vacuum-electroosmosis with different additives. The parameters of discharged water, current, water content, and shear strength of soils treated with different amounts of Ca(OH)2, FeCl3, and NaCl were analyzed. The results showed that different additives have different effects on the vacuum-electroosmosis method for reinforcing dredger filling. Excessive additive contents were found to have an adverse effect on vacuum-electroosmosis, and hence, optimum amounts are required for the three additives. On comparing the optimum dosage of these additives, FeCl3 was observed to be the most energy-saving. From the aspect of anode corrosion and the costs involved, Ca(OH)2 was the most economical. For practical engineering applications, Ca(OH)2 was the most preferable additive. The results of this study provide guidance and scientific criteria for similar dredging foundation treatments.
Large Strain Consolidation of Dredged Slurries Considering Clogging Effect with Coupled Vertical–radial Flow

Abstract:Dredged slurries improved by vacuum preloading methods were found to be still weak generally after the pore water drainage finished. Three reasons, including nonuniform consolidation, soil particles migration and blockage of the drain filter, have been proposed to explain the failure. Thus, finding out the principle factor is essential for modifying the vacuum improvement method effectively. In this paper, a large strain consolidation model with coupled vertical–radial flow is built to investigate the effects of the three factors. Blockage at the drain and clogging in the soil is found to be the main factors. Besides, the clogging in the soil shows a significant influence on the distribution of pore water pressure along the radius. Then, the consolidation behaviors and variations of water drainage direction are also analyzed under different upper boundary conditions compared to the results from a laboratory test. On that base, the hard shell boundary is found to be better in simulating the upper boundary conditions in the membrane system.
Experimental Study on the Effects of Particle Grading on Lime-Treated Slurry with Vacuum Preloading

Abstract:Lime treatment combined with vacuum preloading has been used in the treatment of dredging slurry for many years. Previous studies have indicated that particle grading, which is one of the essential properties of slurry, could affect the pore-size distribution and compression characteristics of slurry and thus affect the efficacy of the lime treatment and vacuum preloading. However, the effect of particle grading has not yet been examined quantitatively. This study investigated the compressibility of lime-treated slurries with different particle gradings using a one-dimensional oedometer for compression testing. A series of laboratory model tests were carried out to examine the effect of particle grading on the efficacy of lime-treated slurry with vacuum preloading. The results showed that particle grading significantly influences optimal lime content. For clay or low-plasticity silt, the optimum lime content for lime treatment combined with vacuum preloading was found to be 2%. When slurry contains increased silt and sand grains, more lime is required to achieve effective lime treatment. However, excessive lime would reduce the efficacy of lime treatment on the compressibility and permeability of the soil.

Abstract:Through laboratory simulation test of vacuum consolidation of Xiaoshan clay remodeled, it is proved that the vacuum consolidation preloading effect is the combination effect of pressure differences inside and outside of membrane and soil sample. A simplified formula for estimating the vacuum preloading consolidation coefficient is developed. By elastic loading analysis of soil sample under conditions of vacuum and heap preloading, it is pointed out that the post-construction settlement of vacuum preloading in the field is bigger than that of heaped preloading with equivalent load.

Abstract:The vacuum preloading method has been wisely chosen among many ground-improvement methods considering the time limit of many projects and the characteristics of reclaimed soil. However, the loss in vacuum with soil depth, the clogging around prefabricated vertical drains (PVDs), and the deteriorative consolidation of the deep soil layer, among other factors, create a large challenge to vacuum preloading for dredged marine clay fill. Thus, this study proposes a two-stage vacuum preloading method and focuses on its feasibility and effectiveness. Contrasting laboratory tests are performed in two identical experimental tanks with dredged marine clay fill from the Wenzhou land reclamation site in China. In one tank, the one-stage vacuum preloading method is used to serve as a baseline for this study. In the other tank, use of the two-stage vacuum preloading method is proposed for consolidation; it comprises two stages. In the first stage, the dredged marine clay fill is conditioned by vacuum preloading using half of the PVDs, where the dissipation of the excess pore water pressure tends to be steady. In the second stage, vacuum preloading is activated using all the PVDs. The results show that a better consolidation effect is achieved with the proposed method in terms of the settlement, vacuum pressure, pore water pressure, water content, vane shear strength, and soil particle microstructure after soil consolidation.
