Abstract:INTRODUCTION Shortage of intensive care beds has led to more frequent use of noninvasive ventilation (NIV) outside respiratory units, and data on NIV efficacy and safety on general wards is lacking. OBJECTIVE The aim was to identify potential predictors for NIV failure. METHODS This was a retrospective analysis of patients treated with NIV at the Institute for Pulmonary Diseases of Vojvodina from 2009 to 2013. Demographics, blood gases, chest radiographs, setting, and outcomes were analyzed to identify predictors of NIV failure. RESULTS A total of 138 patients (65% men, mean age 66 ± 11 years) were treated with NIV. Indications for NIV were acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (85%) and cardiogenic pulmonary edema (7%), as well as respiratory insufficiency related to obesity and central hypoventilation (5%) and neuromuscular disease (3%). Rate of NIV failure was 34.8%. In 86 patients NIV was applied in the High Dependency Unit (HDU), while 52 received NIV on the general ward. Baseline characteristics in terms of gender, arterial blood gases, and the extent of consolidation on chest radiographs were similar. Patients treated in HDU were younger (64.4 ± 1.2 vs. 69.4 ± 1.5 years, p < 0.001). NIV on the general ward compared to HDU had higher rates of NIV failure (28/52 vs. 20/86, p < 0.001). Presence of consolidation involving two or more quadrants on chest radiograph (55% vs. 29%, p < 0.001) was associated with NIV failure. When adjusted for age and the extent of consolidation on chest radiograph, NIV failure was still less likely in patients treated in HDU (OR 0.23, 95% Cl 0.10-0.50). CONCLUSION Patients with consolidation on chest X-ray and patients treated with NIV outside of dedicated respiratory units are at a higher risk for NIV failure.
All-digital training course in neurophysiology: lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract:Background: The social distancing and suspension of on-campus learning, imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, are likely to influence medical training for months if not years. Thus, there is a need for digital replacement for classroom teaching, especially for hands-on courses, during which social distancing is hardly possible. Here, we investigated students' learning experience with a newly designed digital training course in neurophysiology, with intercalated teaching blocks in either asynchronous (unsupervised online lectures and e-labs) or synchronous (online seminars, supervised by instructors) formats. Methods: The accompanying anonymized prospective study included 146 student participants. At the beginning and the end of the course, students were invited to answer anonymous online questionnaires with 18 and 25 items, respectively. We conducted both qualitative analyses of students' survey responses and statistical analyses of the results of cohort-specific summative examinations. The summative assessment results were compared both between 4 current cohorts and with the respective historical cohorts. Results: Despite having little prior experience with e-learning (4.5 on the 1-7 scale), students adapted remarkably well to this online format. They appreciated its higher flexibility, time efficiency, student-oriented nature (especially when using inverted classroom settings), tolerance towards the individual learning style and family circumstances, and valued the ability to work through lectures and e-labs at their own learning speed. The major complaints concerned diminished social contacts with instructors and fellow students, the inability to ask questions as they occur, and the lack of sufficient technical expertise. The students valued the newly developed e-labs, especially the implementation of interactive preparative measures (PreLabs) and the intuitive lab design offered by the chosen software (Lt Platform from AD Instruments). The summative examinations at the end of the course documented the quality of knowledge transfer, which was comparable to that of previous classically instructed cohorts. Conclusion: Despite the missing personal contact between the faculty and the students, inherent to online teaching, the all-digital training course described here proofed to be of good educational value and, in case the pandemic continues, is worse considering for the future. Some of the described building blocks, like digital lectures or interactive PreLabs, may survive the pandemics to enrich the medical education toolbox in the future.

Abstract:Introduction: An evaluation of the online medical course was conducted to assess student readiness, engagement, and satisfaction at the San Beda University College of Medicine in Manila during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methodology: A convergent mixed methods approach was done with a quantitative online survey and a qualitative thematic analysis of focus group discussions (FGD) with medical students. A total of 440 students participated in the survey while 20 students participated in the FGDs. Results: The medical students were sufficiently equipped with computers and internet connections that allowed them to access the online medical course from their homes. The 5 themes identified during the study that were relevant to education were: Student readiness for online learning, Learning Management System (LMS) and internet connectivity, teaching and learning activities, the value of engagements, and teaching effectiveness of the faculty. The combined quantitative and qualitative analysis revealed vital issues that affect student learning. This included the need for students to interact with fellow students and to be engaged with their faculty. The issues that affect teaching included the need for continuing faculty training and management skills in delivering the full online course. Conclusion: The success of online education rests heavily on the interactions of the students, the teachers, and the knowledge. Student interactions, managerial and skills training for the faculty, and providing students with a mix of synchronous and asynchronous activities are the most effective means to ensure the effective delivery of online medical courses.
Exploring the Residents' Perspective on Smart learning Modalities and Contents for Virtual Urology Education: Lesson Learned During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract:Purpose: The COVID-19 outbreak has substantially altered residents' training activities. While several new virtual learning programs have been recently implemented, the perspective of urology trainees regarding their usefulness still needs to be investigated. Methods: A cross-sectional, 30-item, web-based Survey was conducted through Twitter from April 4th, 2020 to April 18th, 2020, aiming to evaluate the urology residents' perspective on smart learning (SL) modalities (pre-recorded videos, webinars, podcasts, and social media [SoMe]), and contents (frontal lessons, clinical case discussions, updates on Guidelines and on clinical trials, surgical videos, Journal Clubs, and seminars on leadership and non-technical skills). Results: Overall, 501 urology residents from 58 countries completed the survey. Of these, 78.4, 78.2, 56.9 and 51.9% of them considered pre-recorded videos, interactive webinars, podcasts and SoMe highly useful modalities of smart learning, respectively. The contents considered as highly useful by the greatest proportion of residents were updates on guidelines (84.8%) and surgical videos (81.0%). In addition, 58.9 and 56.5% of responders deemed seminars on leadership and on non-technical skills highly useful smart learning contents. The three preferred combinations of smart learning modality and content were: pre-recorded surgical videos, interactive webinars on clinical cases, and pre-recorded videos on guidelines. Conclusion: Our study provides the first global «big picture» of the smart learning modalities and contents that should be prioritized to optimize virtual Urology education. While this survey was conducted during the COVID-19 outbreak, our findings might have even more impact in the future.

Abstract:Abstract Purpose The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic posed an eminent challenge for medical teachers worldwide. Face-to-face lectures and seminars were no longer possible, and alternatives had to be found. E-learning concepts quickly emerged as the only practicable solutions and also offered the opportunity to evaluate whether traditional face-to-face lectures could be translated into an online format, independent of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods We offered an e-learning program consisting of lecture notes, screencasts with audio narration, and online webinars that covered topics normally taught in traditional lectures and seminars. To evaluate the learning behavior and quality of our e-learning program, we drafted a questionnaire that students completed at the end of the 2020 summer semester that had been designed to enable a comparative analysis of the different e-learning modules. Results Voluntary participation in the online courses was high. Survey analysis revealed high satisfaction with and a distinctive preference for the format, even under regular, COVID-19-independent conditions. In general, a positive appraisal of e-learning—especially as a substitute for regular lectures—was found. Students also reported higher studying efficiency. Exam results were equal to those of previous semesters. Conclusion Both acceptance of and satisfaction with our e-learning modules were high, and students displayed increased demand for this kind of e-learning format. We, therefore, conclude that e-learning offerings could serve as reasonable, efficient, student-orientated substitutes for certain medical courses, especially lectures. These curricular adaptations would correlate with the high digitalization seen in students’ everyday lives. This correlation may also hold true independent of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract:Background: The alarming outbreak of the COVID-19 virus significantly disrupted all aspects of human life, including education. As a result, e-learning has become a vital tool for education. This study aimed to investigate the attitudes of medical and anesthesia students toward e-learning in physiology during the pandemic of COVID-19. Methods: This descriptive study was conducted among 67 medical and anesthesiology students at Abadan University of Medical Sciences who studied physiology in the second semester of 2020-2021 in the form of e-learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A researcher-created questionnaire was used, rating items on a five-point Likert scale. Data were entered into SPSS 21 for statistical analysis and analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results: A total of 73.1% of the participants in this study were women. The favorable opinions of students by percentage were as follows: satisfactory access to the Internet, 71.0%; the possibility of downloading educational content from the educational system, 88.2%; effective communication between teacher and student through e-learning, 20.6%; e-learning by combining online and offline education, 69.1%; the suitability of offline educational content due to accessibility convenient to learn at any time and place where the student wants to learn, 75%; face-to-face education is more suitable than e-learning, 60.3%. Conclusion: Effective communication between teacher and student is weak in virtual/online education. Students were generally positive about a combination of online and offline virtual education together and liked offline educational content due to ease of access at any time and place. In general, students preferred face-to-face teaching to virtual education.
An Inquiry-Based Distance Learning Tool for Medical Students Under Lockdown ("COVID-19 Rounds"): Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract:Background: The COVID-19 pandemic presented significant challenges to both clinical practice and the delivery of medical education. Educators and learners implemented novel techniques, including distance learning and web-based rounds, while trying to stay updated with the surge of information regarding COVID-19 epidemiology, pathogenesis, and treatment. Hence, we designed and implemented a technologically enhanced course called "COVID-19 Rounds" to educate students about the rapidly evolving pandemic. Objective: The objectives of this study are to describe a technologically enhanced course called "COVID-19 Rounds" and evaluate the following: (1) student satisfaction and program usefulness in achieving preset objectives, (2) perceived improvement in literacy regarding the pandemic, and (3) the impact of student engagement by designing infographics and initiating COVID-19-related research projects. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study measuring the impact of the implementation of the web-based "COVID-19 Rounds" course. This program included web-based clinical experiences with physicians on actual rounds in COVID-19 wards in the hospital, weekly updates on evolving data and new research, and engagement in student-led projects. The study population included 47 fourth-year medical students at the Mohamed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, who attended the course. We designed and administered a 47-item survey to assess student satisfaction, program usefulness, impact on knowledge, and student engagement. Data were collected at the end of program delivery via Microsoft Forms. Results: In total, 38 (81%) out of 47 fourth-year medical students participated in this study. The final course evaluation revealed an overall high satisfaction rate, with a mean rating of 3.9 (SD 0.94) on the 5-point Likert scale. Most students were satisfied with the course format (27/38, 71%), organization (31/38, 82%), and the learning experience (28/38, 74%) that the course offered. The course was particularly appreciated for offering evidence-based talks about aspects of the pandemic (34/38, 90%), providing weekly updates regarding emerging evidence (32/38, 84%), and enhancing understanding of the challenges of the pandemic (34/38, 90%). Satisfaction with distance learning was moderate (23/37, 62%), and a minority of students would have preferred an in-person version of the course (10/37, 27%). Student engagement in the course was high. All students participated in small group presentations of infographics of pandemic-related topics. Perceived advantages included conciseness and visual appeal, and disadvantages included the lack of detail and the time-consuming nature of infographic design, especially for students with no prior design experience. After the course ended, 27 (57%) students began research projects. This resulted in 6 abstracts presented at local meetings and 8 scientific papers published or submitted for publication. Conclusions: This inquiry-based adaptive approach to educating medical students about updates on COVID-19 via web-based learning was successful in achieving objectives and encouraging engagement in research. However, shortcomings of the course related to the lack of in-person teaching and clinical activities were also highlighted.
Medical education during the COVID-19 pandemic: What students missed and what they did not. A questionnaire-based cross-sectional study

Abstract:Background: Medical education was and still is challenged by the COVID-19 pandemic, and several strategies were implemented by the universities worldwide in order to maintain a good level of education. The aim of this work is to point out how strategies adopted in a German university hospital reached students and how comfortable they felt with the proposed solutions in order to define future possibilities in modern teaching. Methods: A questionnaire was answered by medical students at the end of the 8th and 10th semester in a German university hospital asking them about their perception of medical education during the pandemic as well as about strategies adopted by the faculty. Results: A total of 92 out of 117 students answered the questionnaire (78.6% response rate). Students felt disadvantaged in their medical education because of the pandemic on a scale from 0 (not at all) to 10 (completely) (5.34±2.3, range 0-10 points), regardless of semester, gender, and whether they aimed at a surgical career or not. During the pandemic they missed practical exercises most (93.5%), followed by contact with other students (65.2%). Presence lessons were missed (28.3%) the least. Among the strategies offered to maintain education, recorded lessons were appreciated most, followed by skills labs. Live-stream lessons were considered less comfortable. Conclusions: Several aspects of medical education were replaced satisfactorily during the pandemic, others need to be adapted in the future in order to meet the students' needs and expectations. Theoretical online education but not live stream lessons could be an option beyond COVID-19 as they are highly appreciated by students.

Abstract:Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has precipitated an accelerated shift in education, moving from traditional learning to web-based learning. This transition introduced a notable transactional distance (TD) between the instructors and learners. Although disease control and staff and students' safety are the top priorities during a pandemic, the successful delivery of education is equally crucial. However, the ramifications of this swift transition are particularly critical in the context of dental education. Dental education is inherently practice oriented, necessitating hands-on training and manual skills development, which poses unique challenges to distance learning approaches. Objective: This study aims to examine dental students' web-based learning satisfaction and experience of TD, investigate the predictors of web-based learning satisfaction, and explore the perceptions of students about the advantages and disadvantages of web-based learning. Methods: This study explored the factors associated with web-based learning satisfaction using TD theory during the transition to web-based education. Psychological factors that could influence satisfaction were adapted from the health belief model. We conducted a cross-sectional web-based survey of 345 dental students from 2 institutions in South Korea who were enrolled in the spring semester of 2020. Data were collected between July 8 and September 14, 2020. Qualitative analysis was used to examine responses to open-ended questions concerning perceptions of web-based learning. Results: A multivariate hierarchical linear regression model was used to analyze the effects of student characteristics, TD, and psychological factors (ie, perceived risk of infection and efficacy belief of web-based learning) on web-based learning satisfaction. The average score for web-based learning satisfaction was 3.62 (SD 0.84), just above the midpoint of the possible range (1-5). Self-regulated learning (β=0.08; P =.046), learner-instructor interaction (β=0.08; P =.03), and learner-content interaction (β=0.64; P <.001) were associated with higher levels of satisfaction. Moreover, a significant association was revealed between high efficacy beliefs in web-based learning (β=0.20; P <.001) and satisfaction. Although the learning structure (synchronous vs asynchronous) did not exhibit a significant association with satisfaction, the qualitative analysis results revealed that each structure possesses distinct strengths and weaknesses. The students in synchronous learning (79/345, 22.9%) recognized heightened autonomy in the "learning environment" (19/79, 24%); however, technical issues (28/79, 35%) and reduced concentration (15/79, 19%) were identified as downsides. Conversely, the students in asynchronous settings (266/345, 77.1%) emphasized unlimited access to learning content (74/266, 27.8%) and the flexibility of "learning in preferred time" (69/266, 25.9%). Nevertheless, challenges, such as self-management difficulties (66/266, 24.8%) and limited interactions (55/266, 20.7%), were evident. Conclusions: The findings suggest that efforts to minimize TD, facilitating self-regulated learning and interaction among students and instructors, are critical for achieving web-based learning satisfaction. Moreover, establishing a common understanding among students regarding the necessity and efficacy of web-based learning during epidemics could enhance their satisfaction. Trial Registration:

Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Acceptance and Use of an E-Learning Platform

Abstract:E-learning has become an increasingly important part of higher education and is currently used both for distance education and as a complement to teaching on the campus. In this study, we investigated the acceptance of the e-learning platform (ELP) ClinicalKey Student (ELSEVIER©) among first-year medical students. Furthermore, we asked whether acceptance (i.e., digital activities) and user behavior changed during the COVID-19 lockdown. Two first-year medical student study cohorts were followed: one cohort during the COVID-19 lockdown and another cohort one year before the lockdown. Different parameters, such as online versus offline studying, daily activities or users versus nonusers, were recorded and evaluated. Additional surveys were conducted to understand why the students used the ELP. In the non-pandemic cohort, 68 out of 251 enrolled students registered in the ELP, while the number of registered students significantly increased during the COVID-19 lockdown (201 out of 255 enrolled 2nd semester students). The increase in registered users was paralleled by an increase in daily activities normalized per user and day. Despite this increase in ELP activities, the relative distribution of different user types (i.e., online versus offline users) did not change. To conclude, this study demonstrates that the COVID-19 lockdown increases the receptivity of medical students to an ELP, but the way the students work with the ELP remains unchanged.

Abstract:Abstract Background The COVID-19 pandemic and physical distancing have had a significant impact on the conversion of traditional teaching methods to online teaching methods, which although not uncommon in medical schools, has to date only been used for some aspects of the teaching process. Thus, we aimed to measure the effectiveness of e-learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as medical students’ preferences regarding e-learning and classroom teaching, and the possibility of applying it post-pandemic. Methods A cross-sectional online survey of medical students (N = 376) in six medical schools was carried out after their second semester, from August 15 to 20, 2020. Ten parameters were measured for the effectiveness of e-learning based on a 5-point Likert-scale and five parameters were measured for satisfaction. Results e-learning was more or equally effective in four parameters such as assignment submission and meeting individual needs, but less effective in six parameters, including building skills and knowledge, and interaction level. Satisfaction was either high or neutral in all five parameters. Conclusions Our findings have shown that e-learning can assist the teaching process in medical schools in some respects, but cannot be used for the entire teaching process.

Exploring nursing students' learning experiences and attitudes toward older persons in a gerontological nursing course using self-regulated online enquiry-based learning during the COVID-19 pandemic: A mixed-methods study

Abstract:Background: During the COVID-19 pandemic, universities adopted online teaching as the primary teaching and learning method. Most of the online teaching, however, has been limited to the broadcasting of asynchronous lectures and sharing of teaching materials. Objectives: To explore undergraduate nursing students' self-regulated learning experiences, satisfaction, and attitudes toward older persons in a gerontological nursing course using online self-regulated enquiry-based learning (EBL) during the COVID-19 pandemic. Design: A mixed-methods design was adopted. Setting: A university in Hong Kong providing pre-registration nursing programmes. Participants: 155 students studying in the fourth year in a five-year Bachelor of Nursing programme participated in the quantitative study in which 18 joined the focus groups (4 groups with group size of 4-5). Methods: Five video-based scenarios along with two interactive online workshops, a mind-map development exercise, gamified assessments, reading materials, group discussions, and presentations were adopted in a gerontological nursing course offered in 2019-2020 to enhance the students' learning, driven by a process of enquiry. Attitudes toward older people were measured at baseline and one week after the course (post-test). Information on self-regulated learning experiences, satisfaction, and confidence were collected at post-test only. Paired t-tests and descriptive statistics were used to analyse the data. Focus groups were conducted through semi-structured interviews and transcribed verbatim for inductive content analysis. Results: A significant improvement was demonstrated in the students' attitude toward older people. The students appreciated the opportunities provided by the online EBL to apply key concepts of gerontology in the teaching and learning activities and to enhance their critical thinking skills. Three major themes were revealed from the focus group: Perception of the teaching pedagogy, Improvement of cognitive skills, and Positive and negative aspects of the learning experience. Conclusions: The online self-regulated EBL improved the students' online learning experience in a gerontological nursing course during the pandemic and improved their attitudes toward older people.

All the synchronous and asynchronous teaching learning activities across all the phases of MBBS were observed and reviewed. The challenges, limitations and opportunities in the implementation process were analyzed. Appropriate solutions were found for most of the challenges including the implementation of competency based undergraduate curriculum for phase 1 MBBS students. Feedback was taken from the undergraduate medical students to know their perceptions on e learning and its use as a teaching learning method. The questionnaire included both closed and open ended questions to know the learning experiences and preferences of the students. The data was subjected to descriptive statistics and computed as frequency percentages. The study presents the challenges in the implementation of online teaching like providing the required infrastructure and training the faculty. It also reveals its limitations in providing clinical experience and conducting assessments for students. The study also shows that though the medical students perceived various features of e learning to be useful but believed traditional classroom to be a better learning environment. The study highlights that e learning has provided the opportunity to promote self directed learning for students and to develop technological skills of both the faculty and the students, suggesting its potential role in the future of medical education.
The Impact of SARS-CoV-2 Pandemic on Medical Students: Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices towards E-Learning: An Online Cross-Sectional Study in the Kurdistan Region, Iraq

Abstract:Background. After COVID-19 emergence, medical education witnessed a shift from face-to-face education to digital education, which inevitably affected medical students. Globally, due to the closure of schools and universities, medical education was shifted to electronic learning (E-learning). This paper aimed to assess the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on medical education and determine medical students’ knowledge, attitude, and practices towards E-learning in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Materials and Methods. An online cross-sectional study was conducted among 500 undergraduate students of seven medical colleges in the Kurdistan Region, Iraq, in November 2021, to assess their state during the COVID-19 pandemic and how this affected their education. Results. There were 50.6% of males and 49.4% of females. The mean age was 20.6 (± 1.5 SD) years. Approximately 17% of participants mentioned having financial issues, while 19.2% of students experienced health-related problems. As many as 67% of participants reported that the Internet quality was good or very good, whereas 46.8% of students disagreed that E-learning was a possible substitute for traditional learning. About two-thirds of participants agreed or were neutral that downloadable content was better than live content; however, only 19.2% of students agreed that E-learning could be used in the clinical aspect. A total of 52.2% of participants disagreed that E-testing could replace traditional learning methods. Surprisingly, 86.4% of students stated that they regularly used the Internet in their study. Conclusions. E-learning was the main adjustment made in the educational system, including medical education. The study concluded with insights into how different circumstances could have different consequences on the efficacy of medical education. E-learning showed effective results in continuing learning until the educational system switched to a blended system. Training programs for medical education personnel are vital in effective E-learning opportunities.
Medical education during the COVID-19 pandemic: An online-only course can achieve good to medium psychomotor skill level of basic head and neck examination

Abstract:Background/objectives: New teaching methods are warranted to meet the demand for increased flexibility in medical education while making optimal use of the limited resources of educators. The COVID-19 pandemic forced universities to resort to online-only teaching, even for training of psychomotor skills. The objectives of this study were: (I) to investigate the performance of students without previous experience in ear, nose and throat (ENT) examination after completing an asynchronous online teaching course in an objective standardized clinical examination (OSCE) and (II) to evaluate the degree of over- and underestimation of their abilities. Methods: The study was designed as a prospective, single-institution medical education cohort study. Medical students (n = 54; 3rd/4th year, no previous head and neck examination skills) completed a comprehensive online training for basic head and neck examination skills 1-14 days before undergoing an OSCE on 5 different examination items (cervical lymph node examination, oral/oropharyngeal examination, otoscopy, Weber/Rinne hearing test, anterior rhinoscopy). Expert-evaluated theoretical knowledge and practical abilities were measured using Likert scales (1 = high proficiency to 5 = low proficiency). Participants self-evaluated their own skills before and after the OSCE (5-point Likert scales). Results: Students achieved an overall good to medium skill level in basic head and neck examination after online training. Increased psychomotor complexity of tasks contributed to worse performance. Expert evaluation of practical skills was better in male participants and those who rated their preparation as thorough. Low/no misjudgment (discrepancy between self- and expert-evaluation) was observed in most participants, while high discrepancy levels (strong misjudgment) were mainly attributable to the students' underestimation of their own abilities. Conclusions: Online training of head and neck examination skills is a cost- and resource-efficient introduction to skill training and was inevitable during the pandemic. However, it cannot replace practical hands-on training, especially in tasks with high psychomotor requirements. Refresher-courses could compensate for cancelled skill training during the pandemic.

Abstract:Aim The study investigated the outcomes of employing this hybrid method among nursing students engaged in emergency and critical care curricula during the COVID‐19 pandemic. Methods A retrospective study examined nursing students enrolled in the nursing program in China between January 2019 and January 2021. Students were divided into two groups: a study group that engaged in hybrid learning and a control group that participated in traditional classroom learning. Both groups received identical learning materials and credit hours. The study group assessed online learning via a platform with broadcasting features, while offline sessions occurred in the classroom. Post‐course, groups were compared in knowledge, skill, and homework performance. The study group provided feedback through a reflective questionnaire to pinpoint areas for improvement in their online learning experience. Results The analysis involved 1774 nursing students, with 906 in the study group and 868 int the control group. The study group outperformed in homework, individual, and comprehensive skills. Despite 73.7% of the study group citing distractions from surrounding environment, the majority appreciated online learning (853, 96.8%). Regarding the appropriateness of the course materials, foreign body airway obstruction courses are highly rated (721, 81.8%), while invasive hemodynamic monitoring had the least favorability (149, 16.9%). Additionally, 33.0% (291) favored live broadcasting and interactive video teaching during online classes. Conclusions The hybrid learning model enhances nursing students' performance in emergency and critical care courses. However, optimization is needed for environmental distraction, specific contents, and communication methods in online learning.

Abstract:Introduction: COVID pandemic shifted healthcare-related education to digital platforms. With the widespread availability of learning management systems like MOODLE, many opportunities exist to create innovative e-modules. Its success depends on the interactive multimedia resources and structural framework. The present study aims to create two patient-centric e-modules on Diabetes and Alcoholic liver disease in Pathology by a medical undergraduate facilitated by faculty and to assess its impact on learning outcomes and learners' perceptions in relation to student seminars. Methodology: This mixed-method intervention study combines quantitative and qualitative research methods to gain deeper insight into learners' experiences. By random allocation, half of the second-year medical undergraduates (n = 60) attended an e-module, and the other half listened to a student seminar on the same topic with the same specific learning objectives. Pre- and post-test scores and feedback questionnaires were quantitatively analysed. Student-led focus group discussions (FGD) for learners' experiences underwent thematic analysis. Results: Pre- and post-tests for both learning techniques were statistically significant, while the feedback questionnaire's responses favoured e-module. Four focus group discussions yielded six themes for the e-module: Patient-driven holistic learning experience, Inquiry-based learning, Immersive learning, Higher level cognitive skills, Flexibility, repeatability and accessibility, and No human involvement. The five themes for the seminar were: Peer-driven camaraderie learning dynamic, Teacher-centric synchronous learning, Active vs passive listening, Basic learning, and Teacher-student interaction. Conclusion: While both learning techniques had comparable effects on test scores, they have merits and demerits. Hence, blending both techniques where seminars impart basic knowledge and e-module for deeper reinforcement will benefit the students.
Perspectives of educators and students on the efficacy of online teaching and learning strategies employed during COVID-19 in a health sciences institution

Abstract:Background: Healthcare education encountered unprecedented challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, but the necessary responses have also provided learning opportunities for the future. Aims: We aimed to evaluate the impact of COVID-19 on teaching and learning strategies and the perceptions of clinical educators and health sciences students on novel methods to improve online student engagement in Ireland's largest medical school. Methods: Two separate online surveys designed to gain insights into the perceived efficacy of online teaching strategies were distributed to clinical educators and health sciences students (medical and pharmacy) over 7 months via email. Results: A total of 86.4% of educators responded that rapport was more difficult to build online, and 90.5% reported less engagement from students online. The most popular methods that improved student engagement included using polls, a chat box function for questions, small group discussions and having student cameras turned on. Amongst educators surveyed, 81.8% felt a training course focused on teaching strategies at the start of every academic year would be beneficial. From the students' perspective, no difference was noted between the medicine and the pharmacy students. Seventy-five percent reported using quizzes/polls, and 63% reported using game-based platforms as techniques to improve online learning. Sixty-two percent of students described it as a positive outcome of learning during the pandemic. Conclusion: Any pandemic poses unique challenges to the delivery of healthcare education. These surveys report educators' and students' views on online teaching and learning strategies, highlighting novel mechanisms to improve student engagement and ultimately impact on graduate outcomes.

Abstract:Background The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about profound transformations in nearly all aspects of life, leaving its impact on the global community as a whole. Nowhere has this transformation been more pronounced than in the sphere of education, including medical education. Healthcare professionals and educators faced the daunting task of preparing the next generation of practicing physicians amid the ongoing public health crisis. Methods The study involved students from three different Chinese medical universities (groups A, B, and C, respectively). The research employed two instruments: a Scale of Satisfaction with Simulation-Based Education and a Scale of Satisfaction with Telemedicine Competency Education. Data were collected at three different time points: 2020–2021 (online/distance learning), 2021–2022 (hybrid learning), and 2022–2023 (traditional face-to-face learning). Results It was revealed that students demonstrated the highest level of satisfaction during the hybrid learning period (Time Point 2), while online/distance learning (Time Point 1) received the lowest ratings. Statistical analysis indicated significant differences in satisfaction levels across the various time points. Conclusions Hybrid learning emerged as the preferred method among students, yielding the highest level of satisfaction. Online/distance learning during the 2020–2021 academic year and traditional face-to-face instruction in 2022–2023 exhibited lower satisfaction levels. The research findings underscore the practical significance of hybrid learning for students in medical educational programs, suggesting its potential for optimizing educational curricula and resources within academic institutions.
