Abstract:UV-assisted photoelectrochemical processes (UV/E) that produce reactive species are extensively used for degrading pollutants in water, such as natural organic matter (NOM). However, the consequence of the chlo-rinated disinfection byproducts (DBPs) from smaller compounds broken down is not clear in the UV/E. In this study, excitation-emission matrices (EEM) and parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) were applied to determine the products formed during decomposition and the influence of UV/E processes on the formation of DBPs. In comparison with UV photochemical and electrochemical processes, the deterioration rate of NOM in the UV/E process rose by 68.45% and 54.47% in 70 min, while it increased up to 48.85% under the electrochemical process in 23 h. Not only does the reaction time affect the degradation, but the electrolyte concentration and current density also disturb it. The EEM peak locations were 275 nm/495 nm (Component 1), 275 nm/410 nm (Component 2), 230 nm/405 nm (Component 3), and <220 nm/290 nm (Component 4), which were considered to humic acids, hum-like compounds, fulvic acid-like compounds, and aromatic proteins, respectively. C1 and C2 were well relevant to dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and UV254 (r = 0.925-0.963, p < 0.01) and the formation of MCAA, DCAA, and TCAA were strongly interrelated with UV254 and DOC (r =-0.711 to-0.584). The generation of DBPs has a good correlation with C2 (r = - 0.673, p < 0.01). DBPs formation and calculated theoretical cytotoxicity were significantly suppressed by the UV/E process with a higher degradation of NOM. A similar amount of DBPs formation was obtained while 52.6% and 82.90% of the DOC was reduced under the electrochemical process and the UV/E process, indicating that a lower DBPs production and higher degradation efficiency in the UV/E process. It was supposed that the UV/E process could be an alternative for natural organic matter oxidation with properly controlled DBP formation.

Abstract:Natural dissolved organic matter (DOM) is one of the Earth's dynamic carbon pools and a key intermediate in the global carbon cycle. Photochemical processes potentially affect DOM composition and activity in surface water. Suspended particulate matter (SPM) is the integral component of slow-moving rivers, and holds the potential for photochemical reactivity. To further investigate the influence of SPM on DOM photochemical transformation, this study conducted experiments comparing samples with and without SPM irradiated under simulated sunlight. Surface water samples from slow-moving urban rivers were collected. DOM optical characteristics and molecular features obtained by Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) were investigated. Photolabile DOM was enriched in unsaturated and highly aromatic terrestrial substances. Photoproduced DOM had low aromaticity and was dominated by saturated aliphatics, protein-like substances, and carbohydrates. Study results indicated that the presence of SPM had a nonnegligible impact on the molecular traits of DOM, such as composition, molecular diversity, photolability, and bioavailability during photochemical reactions. In the environment affected by SPM, molecules containing heteroatoms exhibit higher photosensitivity. SPM promotes the photochemical transformation of a wider range of chemical types of photolabile DOM, particularly nitrogen-containing compounds. This study provides an essential insight into the more precise simulation of photochemical reactions of DOM influenced by SPM occurring in natural rivers, contributing to our understanding of the global carbon cycle from new theoretical perspectives.

Microscopic Characteristics and Bioactivity of PM10 Collected in Haze Weather

Abstract:High Resolution Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy(FESEM) and image analysis technology(IA) were employed to investigate the microscopic morphology and size distributions of PM10 collected during a serious haze episode in December 2004.The plasmid DNA scission assay was used to study the bioactivity of PM10 in haze and non-haze episodes.The results showed that the haze PM10 is dominated by soot and soot aggregates,which are finer and mostly in wet state,with a significant amount of secondary particles.The residual organic drops are also found in the haze PM10.The plasmid DNA scission assay indicates that the TD20s(the dosage of PM10 that caused 20% DNA damage) of the whole sample and corresponding soluble fraction of the haze PM10 are 50 μg·ml-1 and 93 μg·ml-1,respectively,and the TD20s of whole sample and corresponding soluble fraction of the non-haze PM10 are 160 μg·ml-1 and 200 μg·ml-1.The results showed that bioactivity of the haze PM10 is stronger than that of the non-haze sample,implying that PM10 in haze weather may do potential harm to human health.In addition,bioactivity of the whole sample is stronger than that of soluble fractions of PM10 both in haze and non-haze weather.

Abstract:Summary: We wished to determine whether chronic treatment of rats with cyclosporin A (CSA), an angioten-sin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEI) or angiotensin receptor antagonists modulates the angiotensin receptor density. In rats treated chronically with CSA, the vasoconstrictor response to angiotensin II (AH) is increased and this increase is modulated by ACEI and angiotensin receptor antagonists. Rats were treated for 6 weeks orally with CSA (15 mg/kg/day), the ACE inhibitor lisinopril (10 mg/kg/day), the angiotensin receptor antagonists DUP 753 (10 mg/kg/day), and D 8731 (10 mg/kg/day) and the combinations CSA + lisinopril, CSA + DUP 753, and CSA + D 8731. Olive oil was used as a control. The number of total All receptors (Bmax) was determined by Scatchard analysis of [125I]Sar1 Ile9 AII binding in kidney, liver, adrenal cortex, and adrenal medulla. The receptor subtypes were analyzed with the specific antagonists DUP 753 (subtype 1) and PD 123319 (subtype 2). CSA upregulated angiotensin receptors in all organs studied. Lisinopril alone downregulated angiotensin receptors and abolished the effect of CSA in liver and adrenal cortex and medulla, but not in the kidney, where it had no effect. DUP 753 alone downregulated the angiotensin receptor subtype 1 in kidney, liver and adrenal cortex; its effect on the adrenal medulla in which 89% of angiotensin receptors are subtype 2, did not quite reach significance. The combination of DUP 753 and cyclosporin CSA abolished the CSA-induced increase in angiotensin receptor density in all four organs. The angiotensin receptor antagonists D 8731 downregulated the angiotensin receptors (subtype 1) in liver and kidney and upregulated angiotensin receptors (subtype 2) in the adrenal medulla. Angiotensin receptors are upregulated by treatment with CSA and, in most cases, downregulated by the ACEI lisinopril and two different subtype 1 antagonists. Regulation is organ and subtype specific. Most of our results could be explained by a positive feedback mechanisms in the regulation of angiotensin receptors by AII.

Abstract:Dissolved organic matter (DOM) in rivers is a critical regulator of the cycling and toxicity of pollutants and the behavior of DOM is a key indicator for the health of the environment. We investigated the sources and characteristics of DOM in surface water and sediment samples of the Wei River, China. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration and ultraviolet absorbance at 254 nm (UV254) increased in the surface water and were decreased in the sediment downstream, indicating that the source of DOM in the water differed from the sediment. Parallel factor (PARAFAC) analysis of the excitation-emission matrices (EEM) revealed the presence of terrestrial humus-like, microbial humus-like and tryptophan-like proteins in the surface water, whereas the sediment contained UVA humic-like, UVC humic-like and fulvic-like in the sediment. The DOM in the surface water and sediment were mainly derived from microbial metabolic activity and the surrounding soil. Surface water DOM displayed greater photodegradation potential than sediment DOM. PARAFAC analysis indicated that the terrestrial humic-like substance in the water and the fulvic-like component in the sediment decomposed more rapidly. These data describe the characteristics of DOM in the Wei River and are crucial to understanding the fluctuations in environmental patterns.

Abstract:The excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy was used to characterize the fluorescence properties of water-soluble organic compounds (WSOCs) in PM2.5 coupled with parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC). Three main components of WSOCs were extracted from PM2.5, i.e., humic-like (fulvic acid-like and humic acid-like) substances (HULIS), and soluble microbial by-product-like or aromatic protein-like, respectively. A fluorescence quenching experiment was designed to systematically analyze the interaction laws of atmospheric heavy metal ions and WSOCs in PM2.5. Our study revealed HULIS, especially the humic acid-like substances, might be principal substances binding with metal ions and the strength of interactions was related to the types and concentrations of metal ions. Furthermore, EEM was a powerful tool to understand the interaction laws of atmospheric heavy metal ions and WSOCs in PM2.5. This work implied that the interactions of atmospheric heavy metal ions and WSOCs might directly or indirectly play a significant role in atmospheric environment and public health.

Abstract:Photochemical transformation of natural organic matter in aquatic environments strongly impacts the environmental behaviors of carbon, nutrients, and pollutants by affecting their solubility, toxicity, bioavailability, and mobility. However, the role of particulate organic matter (POM) in environmental photogeochemistry has received much less attention than that of dissolved organic matter (DOM). In this study, a systematic overview was conducted to summarize the photodissolution and photoflocculation of POM in aquatic systems. The photodissolution of various POM, such as resuspended sediments and algal detritus, could be a potential and important source of DOM in the overlying waters, and these photoreleased DOM were dominated by humic-like components. The photogeochemistry of POM is thought to proceed via direct photochemical reactions and reactive radical-dominated indirect processes. Photodissolution can modify the bioavailability of organic matter and influence the biogeochemical cycling of nutrients, heavy metals, and organic pollutants. In addition, the photo-induced flocculation of DOM to POM could also influence the transport and transformation of organic matter and its associated pollutants. The photochemistry of POM can be significantly influenced by several environmental factors, including irradiation wavelength and intensity, organic matter properties, and radical oxygen species. POM photogeochemistry is one of the most important components of the global cycling of natural organic matter. Further studies regarding photogeochemistry should be conducted to overcome the potential problems arising from the concurrent photodegradation of organic matter and to further develop more filed investigations and analytical methods.

Abstract:Dissolved organic matter (DOM) sustains a substantial part of the organic matter transported seaward in large estuaries, where photochemical reactions significantly influence its transformation and fate. Irradiation experiments can provide valuable information on the photochemical reactivity (photo-labile, photo-resistant, and photo-product) of molecules. However, previous research paid less attention to exploring the controls of the initial DOM chemistry to irradiation experiments and examining the applicability of their further integration with field research. Here, we conducted irradiation experiments for samples from the freshwater and seawater endmember of the Yangtze River Estuary (YRE), which receives organic matter transport from the largest river in China, the Yangtze River. Molecules that occurred before and after irradiation experiments were characterized by the Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry. Results show that both post-irradiation samples have the lower aromaticity degree and reduced oxidation state, while the freshwater endmember sample exhibits more dramatic changes, indicating the controls of parent molecules to the effect of irradiation experiments. Integrating with the "molecular matching" approach, we compared the molecules occurring in field samples with the classified molecules (photo-resistant, photo-labile, and photo-product) acquired from performed irradiation experiments and correlated the relative intensity of photochemical reactivity types with salinity . When applying results from different experiments to conduct "molecular matching", the photo-resistant and photo-labile relative intensity possess consistently positive and negative trends with increasing salinity, respectively. This suggests their reliability for molecular matching applications, while the inconsistent trends for the photo-product relative intensity with salinity suggest its uncertainty in assessing the photo-induced effects. Moreover, the molecular composition within the photochemical reactivity types in field samples also evolved along the salinity gradient and showed similar trends with the DOM changes after experimental irradiation. Despite various factors influencing estimations, it is revealed that a fraction of aromatic molecules and majority of carboxyl-rich alicyclic molecules considered with biologically persistent nature in the YRE freshwater zone are simultaneously not susceptible to photochemical transformation to potentially constitute a long-term marine carbon sink. This study emphasizes the importance and limitations of the combination of field research and laboratory-controlled experiments to provide a better understanding of the crucial role of photochemical reactions in affecting carbon cycling in large estuaries.

Abstract:To investigate the compositions and spatio-temporal changes of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) in a typical urban river in Taihu Basin, China, that has been treated with series of water quality mitigation measures, 180 water samples were collected from November 2011 to October 2012 and analyzed with fluorescence excitation-emission matrices combined with parallel factor analysis (EEMs-PARAFAC). Three humic-like components (C1, C2, and C4) and two protein-like components (C3 and C5) were identified. Fluorescent intensity showed more apparent temporal changes than spatial changes, and humic-like substances were dominant. The C3, C4, and C5 components decreased from November 2011 to October 2012, indicating effective CDOM removal by the water quality mitigation measures. Significant positive correlations were found between fluorescent components (C3 and C5) and nutritional factors including TN, NH4+-N, and NO3--N. Furthermore, changes of fluorescent components (C2) were found to be related to microbial phosphatase activities. The application of EEMs-PARAFAC presents a promising approach to track the compositions and spatio-temporal changes of CDOM in urban rivers.
Dissolved organic matters with low molecular weight fractions exhibit high photochemical potential for reactive oxygen formation

Abstract:The photochemical properties of dissolved organic matter (DOM) were highly related to the molecular weight (MW) and organic compositions. In this study, the bulk algae- and macrophyte-derived DOM (ADOM and MDOM, respectively) and Suwannee River humic acid (SRHA) were applied and fractionated into low MW- (LMW, <1 kDa) and high MW-(HMW-, 1 kDã0.45 μm) fractions. The formation and mechanisms of photochemically produced reactive intermediates (e.g., HO•, 1 O 2 , and 3 CDOM*) for these bulk and MW-fractionated samples were compared via the irradiation experiment, fluorescence and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS). Results showed that humic-/fulvic-like substances were mainly distributed in the LMW fraction which occupied about 44–60% of total organic carbon for ADOM and MDOM and 13% for SRHA. Photochemical experiments showed that the autochthonous DOMs (e.g., ADOM and MDOM) were characterized with comparable formation rates and quantum yields of reactive oxygens with the allochthonous SRHA, suggesting the high photochemical formation potential. Further analysis showed obvious MW-dependent heterogeneities that, irrespective of DOM types, the LMW-fraction exhibited higher formation rates and quantum yields, followed by the bulk- and then the HMW-fractions. The fluorescence and FT-ICR-MS results indicated that the unique biochemical classes, i.e., humic-/fulvic-like moieties and protein-/lipid-derived compounds in the LMW fractions may be responsible for the high apparent quantum yields. This study highlighted the importance of simultaneous characterization of MW and organic compositions for evaluating the photochemical potential and other behaviors and effects of aquatic DOMs.

Abstract:Dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays an important role in aquatic ecosystems. Most previous works have focused on the source, migration, and transformation of DOM in the same water body at several sampling sites, but few studies have focused on the differences in DOM among numerous independent water bodies. This study aimed to investigate the fluorescence properties of DOM and its relationships with water quality indexes, eutrophication levels, and land use in corresponding water catchments in several independent water bodies. Five fluorescent components were identified by the EEM-PARAFAC method in the current study. The UVC humic-like component C1 (λEx/Em = 255/454 nm) and UVA humic-like component C2 (λEx/Em = 260/474 nm) were derived from terrestrial plant decomposition or soil organic matter. The UVA humic-like component C3 (λEx/Em = 300/382 nm) was produced by microbial decomposition. The tryptophan-like component C4 (λEx/Em = 280/330 nm) and the tyrosine-like component C5 (λEx/Em = 225(280)/298 nm) were caused by the discharge of sewage. Farmland contributed more to DOC concentration, humic-like components (C1-C3), and humification index (HIX) than did forest and grassland. The maximum fluorescence intensities of C1, C2, C3, and lna(254) were positively related to the trophic state index (TSI), suggesting that humic-like components and lna(254) could be used as indicators to reflect the eutrophication levels of several independent water bodies.
The Effects of Montmorillonite–Humic Acid Composite Particles on the Photolysis of Tetracycline in Water

Abstract:Suspended particulate matter (SPM) is an important component of natural water bodies and can significantly influence the photolytic behavior of water pollutants. A comprehensive understanding of the photochemical behavior of water pollutants in natural waters requires consideration of the presence of SPM. In this study, montmorillonite–humic acid (MMT-HA) composite particles were synthesized to simulate SPM in natural waters and their effects on the photolysis of tetracycline (TC) were investigated. The results demonstrated that the presence of MMT-HA composite particles in water significantly enhanced the photolysis of TC, with the photolytic kinetics following a pseudo-first-order model. Electron spin resonance spectra and free radical quenching experiments indicated that the photoactive components (MMT and humic acids) in the composite particles induced the generation of reactive oxygen species under light exposure, further contributing to the enhanced photolysis of TC. Comparative analysis of the free radical signals and adsorption experiments revealed that the accelerated photolysis of TC was also related to the interfacial interaction between the MMT in the composite particles and the TC molecules. The formation of surface complexes between TC molecules and the negatively charged sites on the MMT surface facilitated light absorption and electron transfer, thereby accelerating the photolysis of TC. Photoproduct analysis indicated that the primary degradation pathways of TC in the composite particle systems included the addition of hydroxyl radicals to the aromatic ring, as well as demethylation, deamination and dehydration in the side chains. This study shows that SPM in water bodies can affect the photochemical behavior of pollutants and should be taken into account when assessing the phototransformation of pollutants in natural waters.

Abstract:Recent studies have increasingly focused on the occurrence of plastic leachate and its impacts on aquatic ecosystems. Nonetheless, the environmental fate of this leachate in the presence of abundant natural organic matter (NOM)—a typical scenario in environments contaminated with plastics—remains underexplored. This study investigates the photo-induced leaching behaviors of dissolved organic matter (DOM) from terrestrial-sourced particles (forest soil and leaf litter) and microplastics (MPs), specifically polystyrene (PS) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC), over a two-week period. We also examined the biodegradability and spectroscopic characteristics of the leached DOM from both sources. Our results reveal that DOM from microplastics (MP-DOM) demonstrates more persistent leaching behavior compared to terrestrial-derived DOM, even with lesser quantities per unit of organic carbon. UV irradiation was found to enhance DOM leaching across all particle types. However, the photo-induced leaching behaviors of fluorescent components varied with the particle type. The MP group exhibited a broader range and higher biodegradability (ranging from 19.7% to 61.6%) compared to the terrestrial-sourced particles (ranging from 3.7% to 16.5%). DOM leached under UV irradiation consistently showed higher biodegradability than that under dark conditions. Furthermore, several fluorescence characteristics of DOM, such as the protein/phenol-like component (%C2), terrestrial humic-like component (%C3), and humification index (HIX)—traditionally used to indicate the biodegradability of natural organic matter—were also effective in assessing MP-DOM (with correlation coefficients R 2 = 0.6055 ( p = 0.003), R 2 = 0.5389 ( p = 0.007), and R 2 = 0.4640 ( p = 0.015), respectively). This study provides new insights into the potential differences in environmental fate between MP-DOM and NOM in aquatic environments heavily contaminated with MPs.

Abstract:Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), a large group of persistent organic pollutants (POPs), have caused wide environmental pollution and ecological effects. Chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM), which consists of complex compounds, was seen as a proxy of water quality. An attempt was made to understand the relationships of CDOM absorption parameters and parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) components with PAHs under seasonal variation in the riverine, reservoir, and urban waters of the Yinma River watershed in 2016. These different types of water bodies provided wide CDOM and PAHs concentration ranges with CDOM absorption coefficients at a wavelength of 350 nm (aCDOM(350)) of 1.17–20.74 m−1 and total PAHs of 0–1829 ng/L. CDOM excitation-emission matrix (EEM) presented two fluorescent components, e.g., terrestrial humic-like (C1) and tryptophan-like (C2) were identified using PARAFAC. Tryptophan-like associated protein-like fluorescence often dominates the EEM signatures of sewage samples. Our finding is that seasonal CDOM EEM-PARAFAC and PAHs concentration showed consistent tendency indicated that PAHs were un-ignorable pollutants. However, the disparities in seasonal CDOM-PAH relationships relate to the similar sources of CDOM and PAHs, and the proportion of PAHs in CDOM. Overlooked and poorly appreciated, quantifying the relationship between CDOM and PAHs has important implications, because these results simplify ecological and health-based risk assessment of pollutants compared to the traditional chemical measurements.

Abstract:Abstract The components and sources of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in urban water bodies are extremely complicated due to multiple environmental and anthropogenic factors. The comprehensive analysis of the DOM molecular composition is crucial for deep understanding their reactivities, environmental behaviors, and fates in aquatic ecosystems, thereby improving our ability to monitor and protect aquatic systems. In this study, ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy (UV–Vis) and excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy (EEM) were combined with Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS) to investigate the optical and molecular characteristics of DOM in the Yongding River (YDH) and Beiyun River (BYH), two typical urban rivers with distinct landscapes and anthropogenic influences in Beijing, China. Results showed that DOM in BYH was mainly composed of proteins from microbial and sewage sources with low aromaticity, molecular weight, and abundant saturated labile compounds, along with a significant presence of anthropogenic surfactants. Whereas the YDH was primarily composed of humic substances from plant- and soil-derived terrestrials, with higher aromaticity humification, unsaturation and refractory compounds. In addition, due to the accumulation of refractory compounds, the concentration of DOC and the degree of organic pollution increased from upstream to downstream of the rivers, manifested as an increase in humification and molecular weight at the molecular level. Our results confirmed that landscape urbanization broadly modified the structure of DOM to be more aliphatic and saturated. The findings of this study will provide important insights into the chemdiverse molecular composition of DOM undergoing different influences from human activities and provide significant guidance for water quality management in urban river ecosystems. Photochemical Reactivity of Humic Substances in an Aquatic System Revealed by Excitation-Emission Matrix Fluorescence

Abstract:The photochemical reactivity of humic substances plays a critical role in the global carbon cycle, and influences the toxicity, mobility, and bioavailability of contaminants by altering their molecular structure and the mineralization of organic carbon to CO 2 . Here, we examined the simulated irradiation process of Chinese standard fulvic acid (FA) and humic acid (HA) by using excitation-emission matrix fluorescence combined with fluorescence regional integration (FRI), parallel factor (PARAFAC) analysis, and kinetic models. Humic-like and fulvic-like materials were the main materials (constituting more than 90%) of both FA and HA, according to the FRI analysis. Four components were identified by the PARAFAC analysis: fulvic-like components composed of both carboxylic-like and phenolic-like chromophores (C1), terrestrial humic-like components primarily composed of carboxylic-like chromophores (C2), microbial humic-like overwhelming composed of phenolic-like fluorophores (C3), and protein-like components (C4). After irradiation for 72 h, the maximum fluorescence intensity ( F max ) of C1 and C2 of FA was reduced to 36.01–58.34%, while the F max of C3 of both FA and HA also decreased to 0–9.63%. By contrast, for HA, the F max of its C1 and C2 increased to 236.18–294.77% when irradiated for 72 h due to greater aromaticity and photorefractive tendencies. The first-order kinetic model ( R 2 = 0.908–0.990) fitted better than zero-order kinetic model ( R 2 = 0–0.754) for the C1, C2, and C3, of both FA and HA, during their photochemical reactivity. The photodegradation rate constant ( k 1 ) of C1 had values (0.105 for FA; 0.154 for HA) that surpassed those of C2 (0.059 for FA, 0.079 for HA) and C3 (0.079 for both FA and HA) based on the first-order kinetic model. The half-life times of C1, C2, and C3 ranged from 6.61–11.77 h to 4.50–8.81 h for FA and HA, respectively. Combining an excitation-emission matrix with FRI and PARAFAC analyses is a powerful approach for elucidating changes to humic substances during their irradiation, which is helpful for predicting the environmental toxicity of contaminants in natural ecosystems.

Abstract:Chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) plays an important role in ultraviolet (UV) light absorption in the ocean. CDOM is known to originate from either an allochthonous or autochthonous source and has varying compositions and levels of reactivity; however, the effects of individual radiation treatments and the combined effects of UVA and UVB on allochthonous and autochthonous CDOM remain poorly understood. Thus, here, we measured changes in the common optical properties of CDOM collected from China's marginal seas and the Northwest Pacific, using full-spectrum, UVA (315–400 nm), and UVB (280–315 nm) irradiation to induce photodegradation over the same time period (60 h). Excitation–emission matrices (EEMs) combined with parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) identified four components: marine humic-like C1, terrestrial humic-like C2, soil fulvic-like C3, and tryptophan-like C4. Although the behaviours of these components during full-spectrum irradiation exhibited similar decreasing tendencies, three components (C1, C3, and C4) underwent direct photodegradation under UVB exposure, whereas C2 was more susceptible to UVA degradation. The diverse photoreactivities of the source-dependent components to different light treatments led to differing photochemical behaviours of other optical indices [ a CDOM (355), a CDOM (254), S R , HIX, and BIX]. The results indicate that irradiation preferentially reduced the high humification degree or humic substance content of allochthonous DOM, and promoted the transformation from the allochthonous humic DOM components to recently produced components. Although values for the samples from different sources overlapped frequently, principal component analysis (PCA) indicated that the overall optical signatures could be linked to the original CDOM source features. The degradation of CDOM humification, aromaticity, molecular weight, and autochthonous fractions under exposure can drive the CDOM biogeochemical cycle in marine environments. These findings can aid in a better understanding of the effects of different combinations of light treatments and CDOM characteristics on CDOM photochemical processes.

Abstract:Algal-dissolved organic matter (ADOM) is an important fraction of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in eutrophic water. Although ADOM is known to be readily transformed by microbes, the role of sunlight-induced photochemical process and the interactions between two processes on ADOM transformation remains unclear. In this study, three types of treatments for ADOM, including photochemical process under natural solar light (L treatment), microbial process (M treatment), and the simultaneous photochemical plus microbial process (L&M), were performed for 18 days. Our results showed that M treatment was more effective for the loss of DOC, chromophoric DOM (CDOM) at short wavelengths (a254 and a280), than L treatment, while L treatment was more effective for the transformation of a350 and the fluorescent components of the ubiquitous humic-like component and the tryptophan-like component. Comparison in the decay kinetics of DOC and CDOM in the three treatments showed that the simultaneous photochemical and biological processes exhibited an inhibitory effect on DOC decay rate but not the percentage of labile DOC fraction. Higher relative abundance of protein-like substances was found after L&M treatment, while the relative abundance of humic-like substance and aromaticity increased after M treatment, and the low molecular-weight compounds were produced after L treatment. Our results emphasized the importance of photochemistry in processing ADOM to mediate the chemodiversity in natural water.

Abstract:Excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy combined with parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) and multivariable analysis were employed to compare components of dissolved (DOM) and particulate (POM) organic matter and to reveal their correlations with water quality in Baitapuhe River and Xihe River in Shenyang City of northeast China. Eighteen water samples in Baitapuhe River and 16 water samples in Xihe River were collected along a human impact gradient. The DOM concentrations in Baitapuhe River were lower than those in Xihe River, so were the POM concentrations. The DOM in Baitapuhe River mainly derived from livestock wastewater and domestic sewage, which had strong biodegradability. However, the DOM in Xihe River mainly originated from industrial wastewater, which exhibited weak biodegradability. Four PARAFAC components (C1 to C4) were extracted from the DOM and POM. C1 was defined as fulvic-like component, and C2 was assigned as microbial humic component. C3 and C4 were ubiquitous protein-like component, which were referred as tryptophan-like and tyrosine-like components, respectively. The C3 was representative for the DOM in Baitapuhe River. The C3 and C4 were the main fractions of the DOM in Xihe River across the centralized wastewater-discharge region, whereas the C2 was the major component across the dispersed wastewater-discharge region. POM was dominated by the C4 in both rivers. Latent factors of water quality included the DOM, DO, Chl a, NO3-N, and NH4-N in Baitapuhe River, but the latent factors contained DOM, DO, BOD5, and COD in Xihe River. Baitapuhe River was under the aerobic condition, but Xihe River was under the anaerobic condition.
