Abstract:This research aims to understand the loading patterns of construction waste hauling trucks in Hong Kong and the factors shaping these patterns. It does so by triangulating the analytical results of big data collected from secondary sources and qualitative data from interviews. Firstly, based on the literature review and our engagement with the industry, four hypotheses on the nexus between "loading pattern" and the factors of (1) vehicle, (2) permitted gross vehicle weight, (3) commodity, and (4) ownership. Then, the hypotheses are tested with combined null hypothesis significance test and effect size measure using 13 million construction waste transportation records. Finally, the results are triangulated with interview data to empirically validate the nexus while providing sensible explanations to them. We find that the four hypotheses are all supported. Distinct loading patterns are presented by different types of (1) construction waste hauling trucks with different (2) permitted gross vehicle weights, (3) types of construction waste transported, and (4) ownership. These findings provide valuable evidence for more targeted interventions, e.g., introducing public policies or hauling operation optimization through the avoidance of excessive underloading or overloading.

Abstract:With rapid urban development, the "waste-free city" concept has emerged. Therefore, the accurate prediction of the amount of C&D waste is of great importance. However, many countries and regions, including China, have not yet established C&D waste databases and standard prediction methods. This study proposed a method using a weighted combination of the grey theory model (GM) and the autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model to predict the quantity of urban C&D waste in the future. Based on a case study in Guangzhou, this study compared the prediction results of three prediction models, namely the GM, the ARIMA, and the proposed weighted combined model of the GM and the ARIMA (GM-ARIMA). The results of this study proved that the proposed combined GM-ARIMA model had a better predictive performance than both the separated models. The mean absolute percentage errors (MAPE) of the GM and ARIMA models were 12.11% and 14.26%, respectively, whereas the proposed GM-ARIMA model had a lower MAPE (8.5%). This study found that the generation of C&D waste in Guangzhou will continue to grow steadily. From 2024 to 2035, the quantity of C&D waste is expected to reach 850 million tons cumulatively, with an annual growth rate of 7.1%.

Abstract:The construction industry has been greatly developed in the past few decades, especially in the extensive use of underground space. The increasing amount of waste (e.g., soil, sludge, and rock) generated in the underground construction constitutes an important part of construction and demolition waste (CDW), but the related problems are rarely addressed in an independent quantitative study. In order to facilitate recycling of underground construction waste (UCW), quantitative methods for predicting UCW are proposed based on mass conservation in this study. Through on-site investigation and literature review, the source characteristics of UCW and corresponding recycling potential are firstly analyzed. Secondly, the corresponding quantitative method is proposed for predicting each type of UCW according to the principle of mass conservation. Finally, the proposed quantitative methods are applied in two real underground infrastructure projects to verify the accuracy. The results show that the accuracy of quantitative methods for predicting shield sludge and engineering soil is 82.03–95.79% and 94.49% respectively. The quantitative methods for predicting the amount of UCW proposed in this study is effective. In both cases, underground construction produced a large amount of construction waste with great recycling potential. UCW can theoretically reach 100% recycling, and full reuse and recycling of UCW will bring huge benefits and be conducive to the sustainable development of the construction industry.

Estimating Physical Composition of Municipal Solid Waste in China by Applying Artificial Neural Network Method

Abstract:Physical composition of municipal solid waste (PCMSW) is the fundamental parameter in domestic waste management; however, high fidelity, wide coverage, upscaling, and year continuous data sets of PCMSW in China are insufficient. A traceable and predictable methodology for estimating PCMSW in China is established for the first time by analyzing 503 PCMSW data sets of 135 prefecture-level cities in China. A hyperspherical transformation method was used to eliminate the constant sum constraint in statistically analyzing PCMSW data. Moreover, a back-propagation (BP) neural network methodology was applied to establish quantitative models between city-level PCMSW and its socio-economic factors, including city size, per capita gross regional product, geographical location, gas coverage rate, and year. Results show that (1) national-level PCMSW in 2017 was estimated as organic fraction (53.7%), ash and stone (8.3%), paper (16.9%), plastic and rubber (13.6%), textile (2.3%), wood (2.2%), metal (0.6%), glass (1.5%), and others (1.0%); (2) organic fraction, paper, and plastics showed an increasing trend from 1990 to 2017, while ash and stone decreased significantly; (3) organic fractions in East, North, and Central-South China were higher than those in other regions. Benchmarking Construction Waste Management Performance Using Big Data

Abstract:The waste generation rate (WGR) is usually used as a key performance indicator (KPI) to benchmark construction waste management (CWIVI) performance, with a view to improving the performance continuously. However, existing researches, for different reasons, only investigated arelatively small amount of construction projects, whose WGRs cannot be confidently accepted as KPIs. This study develops a set of more reliable KPIs/WGRs using an available big dataset on CWM in Hong Kong. By mining the 2,212,026 waste disposal records generated from 5764 projects in two consecutive years of 2011 and 2012, the WGRs/KPIs are revisited and refined. Demolition is found the most wasteful works. New building, and maintenance and renovation (M&R) works individually produce the least waste amount but by accumulating all M&R works, their contribution to the total amount of construction waste could be phenomenal. Based on the more reliable WGRs from the big data, CWM performance benchmarks for different categories of projects are set up. A contractor can benchmark its CWM performance against its counterparts or its past performance as 'Good', 'Average', and 'Not-so-good', and thus identify better CWM practices that induce superior performance. Based on the benchmarks, the government may consider setting up a WGR-step toll system to encourage those 'Not-so-good' contractors to perform well in the future, and initiate incentives to the companies conducting 'Good' projects to spur better CWM performance. Overall, the WGRs derived from the big data and more robust analyses provide a very powerful and handy tool for CWM. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The effect of concurrent or subsequent pregnancy or lactation has been studied in women with breast cancer to determine if these variables influence prognosis. Information was collected from 382 women potentially capable of bearing children, aged less than 45 years, in the Auckland Breast Cancer Study Group data file, a consecutive series of women diagnosed with breast cancer from 1976 to 1985, with a median follow‐up of 10.2 years. The prevalence of both pregnancy at diagnosis and lactation at diagnosis was 2.6%. The incidence of pregnancy subsequent to diagnosis was 3.9%. Women pregnant at the time of breast cancer diagnosis had significantly more advanced disease than non‐pregnant patients, and there was a similar trend for women lactating at diagnosis. Overall survival in these women was poor compared with the non‐pregnant and non‐lactating groups; only 2 of 10 pregnant patients and 0 of 10 lactating patients survived more than 12 years. The adverse outcome for women lactating at diagnosis of their breast cancer persisted despite allowance for nodal status, tumour size and age. However, survival was similar between pregnant and non‐pregnant patients when these variables were taken into account. No significant differences in survival were found between those women who had pregnancies subsequent to diagnosis of breast cancer and breast cancer patients who did not become pregnant. © 1996 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.
Dynamic response of a beam due to an accelerating moving mass using moving finite element approximation

Abstract:In this study, the dynamic behaviour of a beam carrying accelerating mass is investigated. A MATLAB code was developed for numerical solutions. The accelerating moving mass that is travelling on the beam was modelled as a moving finite element in order to include inertial effects beside gravitation force of mass. Since the mass moves along the deflected curve of the beam, these effects are, respectively, the centripetal force, the inertia force, and the Coriolis force components of the moving mass. The effect of longitudinal force due to acceleration of the moving mass is also included. Dynamic response of the beam was obtained depending on the mass ratio (mass of the load / the mass of the beam) and the acceleration of the mass. Numerical results show the effectiveness of the method.

Abstract:'Big data' has been rapidly sprawling in various research disciplines such as biology, ecology, medical science, business, finance, and public governance but rarely in construction waste management (CWM). The CWM community around the world generally relies on 'small data' collected via active solicitation such as sampling and ethnographic methods. This small data is intrinsically limited by its inability to account for the totality of CWM and research findings generated from the small data cannot be accepted with a high level of confidence. With the growing interests in big data, it can be reasonably expected that the waste management community will augment efforts to develop big data and its analytics. However, the efforts are currently constrained by the limited knowledge to do so. This research aims to provide a synoptic overview of the prospects and challenges of big data in CWM. It adopts an inductive, qualitative case study method whereby the empirical data is collected using an ethnographic-action-meta-analysis research approach and triangulated with data from literature, ongoing debate, and other sources. The paper offers some insights on big data acquisition, storage, analytics, implementation, and challenges. Although having a focus on waste management in the construction sector, the insights generated from this study can be of value to general waste management research, which suffers from the same problems of erratic and poor quality data as CWM.

Abstract:Annually, over 10 billion tons of construction and demolition waste is transported globally from sites to reception facilities. Optimal and effective planning of waste transportation holds the potential to mitigate cost and carbon emissions, and alleviate road congestion. A major challenge for developing an effective transportation plan is the uncertainty of the precise volume of waste at each site during the planning stage. However, the existing studies have assumed known demand in planning models but the assumption does not reflect real-world volatility. Taking advantage of the problem structure, this study adopts the stochastic programming methodology to approach the construction waste planning problem. An integer programming model is developed that adeptly addresses the uncertainty of the amount of waste in an elegant manner. The proposed stochastic programming model can efficiently handle practical scale problems. Our numerical experiments amass a comprehensive dataset comprising nearly 4300 records of the actual amount of construction waste generated in Hong Kong. The results demonstrate that incorporating demand uncertainty can reduce the transportation cost by 1% correlating with an increase in profit of 14% compared to those that do not consider the demand uncertainty.

Abstract:<p>Identification technology of household kitchen and dry solid waste has played a major part in improving the accuracy of residents' separation by intelligent outdoor trashcan, which is an effective integral solid waste management tool for growing household solid waste (HSW). Our study aims to present a novel and simple recognition method for kitchen and dry waste based on bulk density. In three communities in Beijing, 270 bagged waste samples were collected, and their moisture content, separation accuracy, and bulk density, characterized. Then a bulk density index was developed to straightforwardly express residents' waste source separation accuracy by linear regression analysis above physical properties. In the 3 Beijing communities, we demonstrated a clear distinction in the bulk density index, for dry, mixed, and kitchen waste of <115, 115–211, >211 kg/m<sup>3</sup>, respectively. Our results provide a theoretical basis for the establishment of an intelligent waste supervision system, which is of great significance for waste management in developing countries like China.</p>

Abstract:One side effect of the unprecedented urbanization in China is the large amount of building-related construction and demolition (C&D) waste generated during the process. It is an enigma why such statistics as C&D waste generation are absent from the literature in spite of their importance to devising sensible interventions to deal with the C&D waste-related problems. This paper aims to estimate the amount of C&D waste at the country level. It does so by adopting a methodology utilizing national statistical data and the average amounts of waste generated at work sites. Furthermore, the estimation undergoes a thorough calibration against various independent sources before it can be accepted confidently. It is finally estimated that approximately 1.13 billion tons of C&D materials were generated in China during 2014, which has declined from a plateau of building activities and C&D waste generation in the early 2010s. The paper provides some useful references for devising appropriate C&D waste reduction, reuse, or recycling strategies. The paper also offers useful commentary on methodology to estimate C&D waste generation at an urban level, particularly in situations where data availability is erratic.

The S-curve for Forecasting Waste Generation in Construction Projects

Abstract:Forecasting construction waste generation is the yardstick of any effort by policy-makers, researchers, practitioners and the like to manage construction and demolition (C&D) waste. This paper develops and tests an S-curve model to indicate accumulative waste generation as a project progresses. Using 37,148 disposal records generated from 138 building projects in Hong Kong in four consecutive years from January 2011 to June 2015, a wide range of potential S-curve models are examined, and as a result, the formula that best fits the historical data set is found. The S-curve model is then further linked to project characteristics using artificial neural networks (ANNs) so that it can be used to forecast waste generation in future construction projects. It was found that, among the S-curve models, cumulative logistic distribution is the best formula to fit the historical data. Meanwhile, contract sum, location, public-private nature, and duration can be used to forecast construction waste generation. The study provides contractors with not only an S-curve model to forecast overall waste generation before a project commences, but also with a detailed baseline to benchmark and manage waste during the course of construction. The major contribution of this paper is to the body of knowledge in the field of construction waste generation forecasting. By examining it with an S-curve model, the study elevates construction waste management to a level equivalent to project cost management where the model has already been readily accepted as a standard tool.
Decision Analysis on Disposal of Large Quantities of Excavated Soft Soil in Abandoned Mines Using a Bayesian Network

Abstract:Disposal of the excess excavated soft soils produced in construction is a contemporary engineering challenge. A win-win solution could be found through utilising much excavated soil during reclamation of abandoned mines, and an evaluation model is necessary to realise this solution. This study aimed to propose a decision-making framework for large-scale disposal of excavated soft soil during mine reclamation using a Bayesian network (BN). Utilising multi-facet information, a decision-making path considering engineering and economic factors, and engineering risks was established. Thereafter, the practicability of backfilling much excavated soft soil into 215 abandoned opencast mines located in Wenzhou, China was evaluated. Based on the decision-making path and information of the 215 mines, a BN including 22 nodes was established with the practicability of large-scale soil disposal in mines as the decision node. Consequently, 40 valid mines were evaluated to be able to absorb 5 x 10(7) m(3) soil, around 50% of the total excavated soil from the municipal districts of Wenzhou during 2020-2024. The BN evaluation showed high reliability with accuracy of all the nodes >70% and that of the decision node >90%. Five input nodes were identified to be high-impact for evaluation of the practicability and total fill volume.
Generation and Prediction of Construction and Demolition Waste Using Exponential Smoothing Method: A Case Study of Shandong Province, China

Abstract:The output of construction and demolition (C&D) waste in China has been rapidly increasing in the past decades. The direct landfill of such construction and demolition waste without any treatment accounts for about 98%. Therefore, recycling and utilizing this waste is necessary. The prediction of the output of such waste is the basis for waste disposal and resource utilization. This study takes Shandong Province as a case, the current output of C&D waste is analyzed by building area estimation method, and the output of C&D waste in the next few years is also predicted by Mann–Kendall trend test and quadratic exponential smoothing prediction method. Results indicate that the annual productions of C&D waste in Shandong Province demonstrates a significant growth trend with average annual growth of 11.38%. The growth rates of each city differ a lot. The better the city’s economic development, the higher the level of urbanization, the more C&D waste generated. The prediction results suggest that the output of C&D waste in Shandong Province will grow at an average rate of 3.07% in the next few years. By 2025, the amount of C&D waste will reach 141 million tons. These findings can provide basic data support and reference for the management and utilization of C&D waste.

Abstract:Along with the rapid growth in construction industry, quantity of construction and demolition (C&D) waste has increased significantly in recent decades. Demolition waste (DW) is identified as one significant stream of C&D waste and it is vital to obtain reliable information of the waste quantity. However, the data of C&D waste generation in China is still insufficient. In this study, an agent-based model is developed to estimate the total volume of DW and the amount of DW generated at each stage of waste disposal in Shenzhen, China. The findings present the greater capacity of deconstruction method in reduction of DW generation than conventional demolition method. In addition, the change from conventional demolition to deconstruction method could bring about a dramatic difference in the amount of construction material saving. However, the results present that change of attitude towards the demolition method is a slow process, which explains the unsatisfactory performance of demolition waste management (DWM) in Shenzhen. Relying on the attitude change of demolition companies is not enough to improve the performance of DWM. Related stakeholders should pay additional attention on DWM. Furthermore, an optimized management framework with involvement of related stakeholders is developed in this study.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the accumulation of construction waste generated throughout the erection of new residential buildings. A special methodology was developed in order to provide a model that will predict the flow of construction waste. The amount of waste and its constituents, produced on 10 relatively large construction sites (7000-32,000 m(2) of built area) was monitored periodically for a limited time. A model that predicts the accumulation of construction waste was developed based on these field observations. According to the model, waste accumulates in an exponential manner, i.e. smaller amounts are generated during the early stages of construction and increasing amounts are generated towards the end of the project. The total amount of waste from these sites was estimated at 0.2m(3) per 1m(2) floor area. A good correlation was found between the model predictions and actual data from the field survey.

Abstract:Due to the large amount of waste generated by urban construction, the transportation of construction waste has a significant impact on urban traffic. Understanding the transportation trajectory of garbage trucks can improve the management of transportation routes and reduce traffic accidents. This study analyzes electric waybill and state data of garbage trucks to identify hot nodes of construction waste transportation, where the volume of garbage trucks is relatively high. Management should strengthen the hot nodes to reduce traffic accidents. First, several machine learning methods are used to improve the prediction accuracy of electric waybill generation, where the garbage truck recorded on the electric waybill is regarded as a working truck. Second, the transportation trajectory of working trucks is extracted, and its spatiotemporal characteristics are further analyzed. Hot nodes are found based on density clustering. Finally, a case study is conducted based on the Shenzhen construction waste transportation system. The results show that the XGBoost model can improve the accuracy of the generation of waybill to 90.5% compared with the decision tree model, random forest, and GBDT. Moreover, the density clustering model can discover the hot nodes of construction waste transportation. Considering the minimum number of samples and the neighborhood radius, the clustering number is determined as 100. The ratio of noise points is determined as 0.79. The results can provide decision support for the management of electronic waybill and garbage truck transportation.

Quantitative Human Risk Analysis of 2015 Shenzhen Dump Failure Considering Influence of Urbanization

Abstract:With the rapid development of urbanization, a large amount of construction spoil was stockpiled around cities and formed extensive dumps. Construction spoil is one of the main construction and demolition (C&D) waste and municipal solid waste (MSW). Once the construction spoil dump becomes unstable, it will bring great risks to the surrounding residents. A catastrophic dump failure occurred on 20 December 2015 in Guangming New Strict, Shenzhen, China. Approximately 2.51×10 6 m 3 of construction waste slid out from the dumpsite, destroying 33 houses and causing total 77 casualties. This paper attempts to analyze the failure probability of the construction spoil dump using Monte Carlo simulation considering the spatial variability of soil properties, and to quantify the dynamic human risk considering the increasing urbanization. Influence of urbanization on the human element at risk is analyzed by referring to multi-temporal remote sensing images. A quantitative human risk assessment model is employed to determine the landslide human risk referring an assessment criteria curve between frequency of number fatalities and number of fatalities ( F-N curve). It is found that the societal risk at daytime was 0.078, 0.088, and 1.432 in 2002, 2014, and 2015, respectively. Meanwhile, the societal risk at night was 0.034, 0.037, and 0.611 in 2002, 2014, and 2015, respectively. The quantitative method was benchmarked by the other landfill failure. It implies that the human risk increased with the development of urbanization and its value at daytime was approximately twice as much as at night. The new approach for the human risk assessment provides guidance for modern MSW landfills and highlights the obvious influence of urbanization on the human risk in other areas.

Abstract:Construction waste is a global problem, including in New Zealand where it makes up 40–50% of landfill waste. Accurately measuring construction waste is crucial to reduce its impact on New Zealand's landfills and meet carbon targets. Waste can be effectively managed if predicted correctly from the start of a project. Waste generation depends on factors such as geography, society, technology, and construction methods. This study focuses on developing a model specific to New Zealand to predict waste generation in residential buildings. By analysing data from 213 residential projects, the study identifies the design features that have the greatest influence on construction waste generation. A generalized linear model is constructed to correlate these design features with waste generation. The findings are valuable for construction stakeholders seeking to implement waste reduction strategies based on predicted waste quantities. This research serves as a starting point, and further investigation in this area is necessary.

Abstract:Abstract The advent of the era of big data and the development of machine learning have brought new opportunities to the field of engineering cost in China. This paper mainly studies the construction project cost management model based on big data. On the analysis of the listing of large amount of data that exist in the proper nouns, the characteristics of dispersion characteristics of distribution, based on these features to implement and compare several listing classification method, the effect of and analyzes the reason of the result, refer to the classification results of traditional method at the same time, puts forward a project cost listing standardization based on polynomial bayesian classification method. In this paper, we propose a method to detect abnormal data by using the comprehensive unit price as the classification label, and study its association with the description of list according to the list classification method, and verify the effectiveness of this method through experiments.
