Abstract:Primary melanocytic tumors of the central nervous system (CNS) are rare lesions, but primary sellar tumors are rarer. Only 10 cases have been reported, and they are often misdiagnosed as pituitary macroadenoma. We report the case of a 54-year-old Chinese man who developed progressive bitemporal hemianopsia and visual loss. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed an intrasellar and suprasellar clouded lesion adhering to the optic chiasm, hypothalamus, and hypophyseal stalk that was suspected of being a hemorrhagic pituitary macroadenoma. Because of the atypically giant, hemorrhagic, and upward-growing lesion, an initial trans-sphenoidal approach failed, and subsequent transfrontal craniotomy was adopted to achieve macroscopically complete resection. Histopathologic findings revealed a benign melanocytic tumor. Despite an extensive search, no other primary or secondary site was found. Considering the relatively benign lesion, effective surgery, and potential significant consequences of radiotherapy, the patient received no further treatment and is still alive at the 7-year follow-up. Primary sellar melanocytic tumors are exceptional lesions that are difficult to diagnose before operating and/or obtaining pathological findings. The pathological classification and extent of surgical resection may play a key role in the prognosis. Once this type of lesion is suspected, the transfrontal approach may achieve preferable exposure and resection. Complete surgical resection may be sufficient for relatively benign lesions; otherwise, stereotactic fractionated radiotherapy is indicated. More cases should be reported to improve the treatment strategy.
Choroid plexus carcinoma: A case report

Abstract:Choroid plexus carcinoma is a rare aggressive malignant epithelial neoplasm (WHO grade III) arising from choroid plexus epithelium. It commonly occurs in children arising in lateral ventricles. This tumour has a tendency for recurrence and metastatic dissemination along cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pathway. We report a case of 11 month old boy presenting with hydrocephalus, irritability and vomiting. Contrast enhanced computed tomography (CECT) brain and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) brain with contrast revealed a mass lesion within right lateral ventricle and hydrocephalus. Surgical resection was done and the excised tissue was sent for cytology and histopathological examination and a diagnosis of choroid plexus carcinoma was made.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Choroid plexus carcinoma is a central nervous system tumor pathologically corresponding to World Health Organization grade III. Choroid plexus carcinoma mainly affects pediatric patients with a poor prognosis. Due to its rarity, standardized treatment has not yet been outlined. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 11 patients with histopathologically diagnosed choroid plexus carcinoma between January 2008 and December 2016. They were treated with surgical resection with or without adjuvant therapies. The clinical profiles and outcomes were analyzed. RESULTS: The mean age at diagnosis was 16.0 years (median, 7.0 years; range, 4 months to w59 years). Gross total resection was achieved in 9 cases, and subtotal resection in 2 cases. Seven patients received adjuvant radiotherapy, and 2 patients underwent chemotherapy. The mean overall survival was 34.8 months, and the mean progression-free survival was 24.5 months. During the follow-up period, 4 patients succumbed to central nervous system dissemination of choroid plexus carcinoma including 2 patients with malignant transformation from atypical choroid plexus papilloma to choroid plexus carcinoma and 1 patient treated with the combined chemotherapy protocol. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, we described the clinicoradiologic characteristics of choroid plexus carcinomas. Surgical resection is the mainstream treatment. Due to the paucity of clinical evidence, the standard regimen of adjuvant therapies still needs further research.
Primary adult choroid plexus carcinomas: a single-center experience with a systematic review

Abstract:Objective: Primary adult choroid plexus carcinomas (PACPCs) are extremely rare brain tumors. The existing literature primarily comprises case reports, which limits our understanding of this uncommon disease. This study aims to describe the clinical characteristics and prognosis of PACPCs, as well as to identify optimal treatment strategies. Methods: We conducted a comprehensive analysis of clinical data from 7 patients with PACPCs who underwent surgical treatment at the Department of Neurosurgery, Beijing Tiantan Hospital, between March 2011 and March 2023. Additionally, a thorough search of the PubMed database was performed using the keywords "choroid plexus carcinoma" or "choroid plexus carcinomas" within the time frame of August 1975 to April 2023, which yielded a total of 28 identified cases. Subsequently, we evaluated risk factors for progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) based on the pooled cases. Results: The pooled cohort, consisting of 7 cases from our institution and 28 cases from the literature, included 20 males and 15 females with a mean age of 44.3 ± 14.7 years (range: 21-73 years). Gross-total resection (GTR) and non-GTR were achieved in 22 (62.9%) and 13 (37.1%) patients, respectively. Radiotherapy and chemotherapy were administered to 29 (90.6%) and 13 (40.6%) patients, respectively. After a mean follow-up of 21.0 ± 26.7 months (range: 2-132 months), 18 patients were alive, and 11 patients had died. The multivariate Cox regression model demonstrated that non-GTR (HR 5.262, 95% CI 1.350-20.516, p=0.017) was a negative prognostic factor for OS. However, we did not find any risk factors for PFS. Conclusion: Complete surgical resection should be considered as the primary treatment approach for this rare disease. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy appear to have limited effectiveness in treating this condition. Further research with large cohorts is needed to validate our conclusions.

Choroid plexus carcinoma presented with spinal dysfunction caused by a drop metastasis: a case report

Abstract:A 2-year-old girl demonstrating gait disturbance and dysuria was evaluated and showed two large remote tumors at the left lateral ventricle and lower spinal canal. Pathological analysis demonstrated both of the tumors to be choroid plexus carcinoma (CPC) with high MIB-1 labeling index. The enhanced mitotic propensity would have contributed to an early stage of drop metastasis from the primary site to the sacral sac and following accelerated formation of a longitudinal tumor, which had grown in the subarachnoid space conforming to the spinal canal and finally caused the presenting symptoms of spinal dysfunction. This report shows that CPC can develop exophytically in the subarachnoid space as well as in the ventricle simultaneously before appearance of clinical symptoms and confirms the importance of extensive neuroimaging in its evaluation.
Metastasis of a histologically benign choroid plexus papilloma: case report and review of the literature

Abstract:Cerebrospinal metastases of benign choroid plexus papillomas (CPPs) are extremely rare. We report a case of 32-year-old woman who presented with a 6-month history of vertigo and intermittent headache. Plain CT scan of the cranium revealed a partly calcified tumor filling the fourth ventricle and its right recess. Cranial MRI showed an inhomogeneously contrast-enhancing tumor and leptomeningeal enhancement encasing the brain stem. Complete resection of the tumor was carried out, and seedings to the floor of the fourth ventricle and cervico-medullary junction were found during the operation. While intraoperative frozen section suggested pathology of papillary ependymoma or CPP, to our surprise, final histological examination revealed a benign choroid plexus papilloma. One month after the first operation, a metastatic nodule was found in the spinal subarachnoidal space at the level of T8-9. Two months after the first operation, on follow-up MRI of the cranium, the leptomeningeal enhancement encasing the brain stem had resolved spontaneously. This special case helps increase our understanding of benign CPPs and expands our differential diagnostic consideration of lesions with similar manifestations.
Intracranial infection and acute obstructive hydrocephalus after lateral ventricle central neurocytoma resection: case report and review of the literature

Abstract:Background Central neurocytoma (CN) is a rare neurogenic intraventricular tumor that accounts for 0.25–0.5% of all intracranial tumors. Surgery is the cornerstone of therapy in most instances. Postoperative complications such as intracranial infection and hydrocephalus may be serious and even fatal. However, there are few reports on the management of complications after CN resection.Case presentation: The authors described a 41-year-old male patient, whose CN was near the interventricular foramen with a high Ki-67 index. Seven days following surgery, an intracranial infection struck the patient. On the seventeenth day, the patient experienced signs of obstructive hydrocephalus, including headache, unconsciousness, and gatism. One month after surgery, the patient recovered and was discharged with no sequela through high-grade antibiotics, lumbar cisterna drainage and external ventricular drainage.Conclusions For CN with elevated Ki-67 or growing in the lateral ventricle, particularly in the anterior region close to the interventricular foramen, obstructive hydrocephalus was more likely to be complicated after surgery. The temporary external ventricular drainage may be a substitute for VP shunt, avoiding maintenance risks and complications of VP shunt during long-term drainage. Besides, we also need to etiologically personalize the treatment approaches based on the various stages of patient for maximum clinical benefit.
Ultrasonography of the gallbladder in patients with a clinical suspicion of acute cholecystitis.

Abstract:The prevalence of ultrasonographic (US) signs described in the literature in cases of acute cholecystitis (wall thickening, increased volume, roundness and local tenderness of the gallbladder, an anechoic layer in the gallbladder wall and cholelithiasis were studied in 136 consecutive patients referred for US examination with clinically suspected acute cholecystitis (AC). Of the patients, 56 had AC, 21 chronic cholecystitis, 2 carcinoma of the gallbladder, and 57 extrabiliary diseases. In AC, frequent findings in addition to cholelithiasis were wall thickening (79%) and an increased volume (64%). Almost one third of the patients had local tenderness (sonographic Murphy sign) (29%), and 27% of the gallbladders had a rounded form. All these features were, however, rather frequently detected also in chronic cholecystitis (5-33%) and in the 2 carcinoma patients, and also sporadically in extrabiliary diseases. A anechoic layer in the gallbladder wall was the only sign confined to AC, but was detected only in 2 cases. Roundness of the gallbladder occurred only in either acute or chronic cholecystitis. The combination of at least two diagnostic findings was noticed in 91% in AC, rather frequently in chronic cholecystitis (43%) and in both carcinoma patients, but only in 1 patient in the extrabiliary disease group. Three or more signs were seen only in gallbladder diseases (48%), but AC, chronic cholecystitis or carcinoma groups could not be completely differentiated (prevalences 63, 10 and 50%).

Abstract:Background: Ependymomas mostly locate in the infratentorial region and often occur in children. Anaplastic ependymomas account for 45–47% of supratentorial and 15–17% of infratentorial ependymomas, also known as malignant ependymomas. Adult supratentorial extraventricular anaplastic ependymoma (SEAE) is rare in clinical practice, and only a few cases have been reported so far, and there is no clinical study with large sample size. We report a case of adult supratentorial extraventricular anaplastic ependymoma in the occipital lobe with cerebrospinal fluid dissemination metastases. Case description: A 58-year-old female patient presented with unexplained pain in multiple parts of the body for the past half a year, mainly manifested as pain in the head, abdomen and chest. On August, 2022, Head MRI of the patient showed abnormal signal shadow in the left occipital lobe, which was considered a malignant lesion. The patient underwent tumor resection under general anesthesia on September 3, 2022. Postoperative pathological examination showed anaplastic ependymoma. The postoperative follow-up head MRI showed multiple cerebrospinal fluid dissemination metastases in the brain. Conclusion: Adult SEAE is a rare tumor with high malignancy and have a tendency to disseminate into the CSF, resulting in drop metastases. Immunohistochemistry is very important for the diagnosis of SEAE. It is recommended to administer adjuvant chemotherapy or radiation therapy appropriately after surgery, based on the tumor being completely resected as much as possible.

Abstract:Rationale: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma has a high incidence in East and Southeast Asia, often with distant metastasis. However, leptomeningeal metastasis (LM) is extremely rare and usually has a poor prognosis. This paper reports the clinical treatment of a patient with meningeal metastasis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) in order to improve the clinician's understanding of the disease. Early diagnosis of the disease can alleviate the pain of patients and prolong their survival time. Patient concerns: We report the case of a 55-year-old female with a history of NPC with LM. Brain magnetic resonance imaging showed temporal lobe enhancement, peripheral edema, and enhancement of the adjacent meninges. Cerebrospinal fluid cytology suggests the presence of malignant tumor cells. Diagnoses: The patient was diagnosed with LM from NPC. Interventions: The patients were regularly given targeted therapy with nimotuzumab, immunotherapy with karyolizumab, and lumbar intrathecal methotrexate chemotherapy and supportive treatment. Outcomes: The patient had survived for 3 years since the diagnosis of LM and was in good condition and still under active antitumor treatment. Lessons: Leptomeningeal metastasis of NPC is a rare disease. Although there is currently no unified treatment plan, the neurological symptoms can still be controlled and the quality of life can be improved through active treatment.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Primary intramedullary spinal cord (IMSC) glioblastoma (GBM) is an extremely rare entity; we report the first case of primary IMSC GBM presenting with exophytic involvement. The prognosis of glioblastoma remains poor due to the aggressive nature of the disease and lack of effective treatment. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 27-year-old Asian female presented to our hospital with a 1-month history of dysuria, incomplete bladder emptying, progressive numbness, and weakness of both lower limbs, as well as a 1-year history of back pain. Spinal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed an intramedullary lesion and exophytic growth in the T4-T12 and T5-12 regions, respectively. The patient's MRI findings were atypical of spinal glioblastoma. The diagnosis was made on the basis of immunohistochemical and pathologic analyses of tissue samples obtained from an open biopsy. The patient received a standard course of glioblastoma radiotherapy and adjuvant temozolomide chemotherapy, which improved her symptoms in the absence of an apparent reduction in tumor size. CONCLUSIONS: Although MRI is of indisputable importance in the diagnosis of spinal cord lesions, immunohistochemical and histopathologic studies are often required to establish a definitive diagnosis. It remains unclear how the unusual involvement of exophytic growth will affect the prognosis of primary IMSC GBM.

Abstract:The tremendous growth in fabrication from small scale integration (SSI) to giant scale integration (GSI) is facing power dissipation as one of the main barriers. To overcome this barrier, researchers need to enter into the reversible logic domain. Reversible logic has various applications in fields of computer graphics, optical information processing, quantum computing, DNA computing, ultra low power CMOS design and communication A lot of work is done on reversible logic synthesis methods; main aim of this paper is to review truth table based reversible logic synthesis methods by taking an example of reversible function of complexity 16 and applying a transformation based algorithm and bit string swapping sorting network to find out a sequence of Toffoli gates in terms of TOF1, TOF2 and TOF3 followed by comparative analysis of algorithms in terms of cost of realization. The bidirectional algorithm is found to be optimum as compare to general algorithm and bit string swapping sorting network.
Primary Intracranial Choriocarcinoma: A Report of 8 Cases with Review of Literature

Abstract:Objective: Primary intracranial choriocarcinoma is a rare intracranial neoplasm. We discuss its clinical features and treatment in a pediatric population.Methods: We retrospectively studied choriocarcinoma cases in our center from May 2002 to January 2015. Eight patients were diagnosed with primary intracranial choriocarcinoma and included. Pre- and post-operative CT and MRI were examined and blood serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) were sampled to measure alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), carcinoembryogenic antigen (CEA), and human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG).Results: All patients were male, aged between 5-17 years, (mean 11 years). The major presenting symptoms were headache, and dizziness with vomiting. All patients presented with hydrocephalus. The duration of onset was 10 days to 3 months; five patients had eye movement disorder and diplopia. Two patients had precocious puberty; and one patient had diabetes insipidus. HCG was elevated in all patients (serum level ranged from 1190-12000 IU/L CSF level ranged from 990-4651.56 IU/L). Three patients received preoperative radiotherapy. Eight patients received ventriculo-peritoneal shunts immediately after admission. Seven patients underwent surgery the remaining patient received chemotherapy with radiotherapy. Seven patients received postoperative chemotherapy. Hemorrhage and tumor growth occurred in patients who underwent preoperative radiotherapy. Follow-up was from 1 to 60 months; three patients died during follow-up and four survived. The mean survival time was 23.6 months.Conclusions: Extremely elevated HCG levels in serum and CSF may help diagnosis of primary intracranial choriocarcinoma. Based on these cases, we are concerned that preoperative radiotherapy may increase the hemorrhage occurrence. Surgery combined with chemotherapy may be a more effective treatment.
The epidemiology and current treatment of pediatric choroid plexus carcinoma: An analysis of the national cancer database.

Abstract:e14024 Background: Choroid Plexus Carcinoma (CPC), a subtype of choroid plexus tumors (CPT), is a rare central nervous system neoplasm mostly affecting the pediatric population. The epidemiology of CPC is poorly understood due to the rarity of the disease. By analyzing the National Cancer Database (NCDB), we describe the demographic and social factors that influence the risk and current treatment of the cancer. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort analysis utilizing the 2018 National Cancer Database (NCDB) and included patients with Choroid Plexus Carcinoma with a histology-confirmed WHO grade III tumor, between ages 0-99 years (N = 202). Analysis was completed for the frequency of cases, types of treatment received, and overall survival within the pediatric population (age < 18 years, N = 139) and the adult population. Demographic factors were analyzed using Pearson Chi-squared tests, and survival was estimated using Kaplan-Meier curves. Results: The majority of the cases analyzed were white (55.4%), male (54%), and pediatric patients (66.8%, mean age at diagnosis = 15.17 years) with an average Charlson-Deyo Score of 0.24. The mean age at diagnosis of the pediatric population was 2.34 years (min = less than 1 years old/diagnosed in utero, max = 16, std. deviation = 3.84) while the mean age at diagnosis of the adult population was 43.49 years (min = 18, max = 84, std. deviation = 18.23.) The most common primary site for CPC was malignant neoplasm of the cerebral ventricle (87.6%) followed by malignant neoplasm of the brain stem (5.9%). Surgical procedure of the primary site was performed in 92.6% of cases including local excision, subtotal resection, resection, radical resection, partial resection of a lobe of brain, lobectomy, and surgery NOS. Radiation was not used 71.3% of the time, but was more than three times as likely to be used in the adult population after surgery than in the pediatric population after surgery (44.4% vs 14.4%, p value < 0.001). Most patients received chemotherapy (53%) with the administration of chemotherapy higher in the cohort less than 18 years old (69.8% versus 15.9%, p value < 0.001). Multiagent chemotherapy was administered as the first course of therapy as the top chemotherapeutic choice (86%) especially among the pediatric population (88.6%) compared to the adult population (60%) Palliative care was not provided in any of the cases. There was no statistical significance difference between the general survival of CPC between the pediatric and adult population. Conclusions: Historically, CPC is known as a pediatric cancer, but this NCDB study suggests that the frequency of the adult population affected is not negligible (31.2%). There is a difference regarding the current treatment of CPC in the pediatric versus adult population. Further study is needed to determine the impact of treatment and the importance of socioeconomic factors on the survival of CPC.

Abstract:INTRODUCTIONAnaplastic pleomorphic xanthoastrocytomas (APXA) are very rare, grade III malignant astrocytic glial neoplasms first described as a distinct entity in the 2016 World Health Organization (WHO) Classification of Tumors of the Central Nervous System (CNS). They are generally seen in pediatric and young adult patients as supratentorial lesions with both solid and cystic components and have a high propensity for recurrence despite local treatment. APXAs occasionally demonstrate leptomeningeal dissemination (LMD) but extremely seldom at the time of diagnosis. They are typically treated via surgical resection with adjuvant chemoradiation, although there is no standard of care for adjuvant therapy. Case Presentation: The authors describe the case of a 37-year-old male with a history of seizures since age 11 who presented with four months of worsening headache, increasingly frequent seizures, and diplopia with right cranial nerve III palsy. Imaging at the time of diagnosis of his seizure disorder as a child demonstrated a small left temporal lesion, which remained stable on imaging for over 20 years and was never biopsied, however MRI at current presentation showed significant interval enlargement with intralesional hemorrhage and leptomeningeal enhancement involving the left temporal and parietal lobes, left internal auditory canal, and right oculomotor nerve. He underwent surgical resection with gross total resection achieved and pathology revealed WHO Grade III pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma with ATG7::RAF1 fusion, 9p21 deletion, and TERT promoter mutation on next generation sequencing. This was followed by adjuvant whole brain radiation with boost and treatment with MEK inhibitor cobimetinib. His postoperative course was remarkable for intermittent speech difficulty and improving right third nerve palsy. CONCLUSIONWe describe the unusual presentation of an already exceedingly rare primary CNS tumor, namely APXA in an adult patient with LMD and cranial neuropathy at the time of diagnosis, and detail tailored adjuvant therapy based on genomic profiling.

Neurocutaneous Melanosis with Intraspinal Malignant Melanoma in Adults — an Extremely Rare Clinical Entity: A Case Report with Review of Literature

Abstract:Objectives Neurocutaneous melanosis (NCM) in adult patients was rare, and few cases had been reported. In this report, we summarized the features of NCM in adult patients for providing useful information about this rare clinical entity. Methods In this report, we present a case of a 41-year-old woman, who was eventually diagnosed with NCM with intraspinal malignant melanoma. The clinical features, treatments, and prognosis of cases of NCM in adults were thoroughly reviewed and discussed. Results A 41-year-old woman was eventually diagnosed with NCM with intraspinal malignant melanoma. The postoperative course was uneventful and her symptoms significantly improved (VAS: 3 points). However, she developed symptoms of intracranial hypertension and deteriorated rapidly after 11 months of operation, and died 1 month later. To date, only 15 cases of NCM in adults have been reported in the English literature. Analyses showed that the average age was 33.8 years (range 19–65 years), and 11 patients (68.8%) were between 20 and 40 years. A slight male predominance (M:F/11:5) was found. For the 12 cases which detailed follow-up information was available, 9 patients (75%) died, with a survival time ranging from 1 day to 29 months post-operation. Death occurred within the first month of operation in 6 cases (46. 2%). The median survival time was 3 months. Conclusions We presented a rare case of NCM with intraspinal malignant melanoma in an adult patient. Although rare, this clinical entity causes significant mortality and has poor prognosis.

Abstract:Choroid plexus papillomas (CPPs) are rare neoplasms classified as World Health Organization grade I tumors. CPPs containing other tissues have occasionally been documented in the literature. However, few of these previous reports have provided clinical and radiological information. We herein report a case of a posterior fossa CPP with focal ependymal differentiation in a 42-year-old woman who presented with a 6-month history of progressive headache. Preoperative radiological images showed a hypervascular tumor protruding into the left foramen of Luschka with perilesional edema. Gross total resection of the tumor was performed. Histopathological examination revealed that the tumor was composed of papillary structures. Immunohistochemical staining of glial fibrillary acidic protein was focally positive around the capillaries, which was suggestive of "perivascular pseudorosette" formation. Our case showed similar imaging appearances as those of CPP; thus, it seems difficult to distinguish CPP with versus without ependymal differentiation by clinical and radiological features alone. The clinical significance and pathogenesis of ependymal differentiation in CPP remain unclear, and further case reports are required.
Spinal drop of atypical choroid plexus papilloma in an adult patient: A case report and literature review

Abstract:Background: Choroid plexus papillomas (CPPs) are benign extra-axial tumors that originate from the choroid plexus; these tumors rarely have metastases, being at the spinal level the location with few reported cases. Case description: We report the case of a 48-year-old man with a history of atypical fourth ventricular CPP and gross total resection (GTR) in 2008. In 2015, he presented with radicular pain, decreased strength, and paresthesia in the left leg. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a well-defined intradural ovoid lesion in the vertebral canal at the level of the L3-L4 intersomatic space. Subtotal resection of the tumor was performed. The patient recovered well, with relief of pain and no neurological deficit. A literature research few cases of CPP metastasis in adults. We describe here a fifth-decade male patient with a lumbar neoplasm, which according to the histopathologic characteristics and location is the first case of an atypical papilloma implant of the choroid plexus at this spinal level. Conclusion: GTR of primary lesions and associated implants remains the gold standard for surgical treatment of CPP. Radiotherapy, stereotactic radiosurgery, and chemotherapy are adjuvant therapies for CPP but there is no definitive protocol for the management of implants. Proper follow-up of these patients is essential since spinal drop can appear many years after the initial presentation of CPP.
Multifocal metastases to choroid plexus from papillary thyroid carcinoma: illustrative case

Abstract:Background: Choroid plexus metastases are extremely rare from all types of malignancy, with only 42 cases reported in the literature thus far. Most of these originate from renal cell carcinoma and present as a solitary choroid plexus lesion; only two cases of multifocal choroid plexus metastases have been reported to date. Observations: The authors report the third case of multifocal metastases to the choroid plexus, that of a 75-year-old man who developed three measurable choroid plexus lesions approximately 3.5 years after undergoing total thyroidectomy and chemotherapy for papillary thyroid carcinoma. He underwent intraventricular biopsy of the largest lesion and subsequently died of hydrocephalus after opting for comfort care only. Lessons: This is the third case of multifocal choroid plexus metastasis in the literature and the second case of multifocal metastasis from thyroid carcinoma. As such, the natural disease course is not well characterized. This case is compared with the previous eight reports of choroid plexus metastases from thyroid carcinoma, seven of which involved solitary lesions. The eight prior cases are evaluated with attention to treatment modalities used and factors potentially influencing prognosis, specifically those that might contribute to hydrocephalus, a reported complication for this pathology.

Abstract:Polymeric biomaterials have played an integral role in tissue engineering, biomedical devices, and targeted drug delivery. Block copolymers are especially important because their physical and chemical properties can be controlled by adjusting the ratio, size, and type of constituting blocks. Herein, the synthesis and characterization of diblock copolymers composed of poly(ethylene glycol) and a polycarbonate based on the metabolic intermediate, dihydroxyacetone, are reported. The length of the dihydroxyacetone-based block was controlled by adjusting the reactant feed ratios and initiator injection conditions. Intermediates and final products were characterized via (1)H NMR, GPC, DSC, TGA, and diffusion-ordered NMR spectroscopy. The dihydroxyacetone-based hompolymer is insoluble in water and most organic solvents, but is hydrophilic in nature. This, coupled with poly(ethylene glycol)'s solubility characteristics, allows the block copolymer to form nanoparticles in aqueous and organic anti-solvents. Dynamic light scattering and TEM results indicated the formation of spherical nanoparticles.
