Abstract:Miniaturized infrared spectroscopy is highly desired for widespread applications, including environment monitoring, chemical analysis, and biosensing. Nanoantennas, as a promising approach, feature strong field enhancement and provide opportunities for ultrasensitive molecule detection even in the nanoscale range. However, current efforts for higher sensitivities by nanogaps usually suffer a trade-off between the performance and fabrication cost. Here, novel crooked nanoantennas are designed with a different paradigm based on loss engineering to overcome the above bottleneck. Compared to the commonly used straight nanoantennas, the crooked nanoantennas feature higher sensitivity and a better fabrication tolerance. Molecule signals are increased by 25 times, reaching an experimental enhancement factor of 2.8 × 104. The optimized structure enables a transmissive CO2 sensor with sensitivities up to 0.067% ppm-1. More importantly, such a performance is achieved without sub-100 nm structures, which are common in previous works, enabling compatibility with commercial optical lithography. The mechanism of our design can be explained by the interplay of radiative and absorptive losses of nanoantennas that obeys the coupled-mode theory. Leveraging the advantage of the transmission mode in an optical system, our work paves the way toward cheap, compact, and ultrasensitive infrared spectroscopy.
Narrowband Diffuse Thermal Emitter Based on Surface Phonon Polaritons

Abstract:Abstract Thermal emission engineering with ability to realize spectral and spatial selection has attracted great attention in recent years. Nanophotonic control of thermal radiation has demonstrated narrowband thermal emitter but with high angle-sensitivity and diffuse thermal emitter but with low quality factor (Q). Here, we demonstrate a simultaneous narrowband, diffuse thermal emitter consisting of 80 nm (<λ/100) thick Ge nanostructures on a silicon carbide (SiC) phononic material. Based on surface phonon polaritons, a spectral coherent emission with a high Q factor of 101 is achieved at ∼10.9 μm wavelength in experiment. Furthermore, this phonon-mediated nanostructure provides spatial control with strong diffuse thermal emission with a full angle at half maximum of 70°. Additionally, the emission wavelength and intensity are tuned by replacing Ge with phase change materials (Ge2Sb2Te5 and In3SbTe2). The designed narrowband diffuse thermal emitter offers new perspectives for the engineering of emission and paves the way for infrared applications, including thermal sources, radiative cooling, infrared sensing, and thermal photovoltaics.
Simultaneous Single-Peak and Narrowband Thermal Emission Enabled by Hybrid Metal-Polar Dielectric Structures

Abstract:Simultaneous single-peak and narrowband thermal emitters with the merits of a simple configuration and ease-of-fabrication provide a path to enhance the energy utilization efficiency while they remain a challenge. Here, we demonstrate simultaneous single-peak and narrowband thermal emission by hybridizing metal microstructures with polar dielectric substrates. The metal provides single-peak emission in a broad spectrum range and the polar dielectric assists narrowband operation. The measured peak emissivity of the single-peak transverse-magnetic-polarized emission is 0.94 with a quality factor of 19 at the wavelength of 11.2 μm, and the emission at all other wavelengths from 2.5 μm to 25 μm is significantly suppressed. The utilization of the refractory material (molybdenum) provides further possibility for such a device to operate at temperatures up to 600 °C. These simultaneous single-peak and narrowband thermal emitters suggest avenues for numerous energy-efficient applications including gas sensing, thermal sources, and thermophotovoltaics.

Abstract:Tailoring the absorption/emission through nanostructures from broadband to narrowband has attracted increasing attention due to the merits of high efficiency and compactness. However, most of the reported narrowband emitters require either complex fabrication process or thick coating of the suitable materials (similar to mm). In this paper, by exciting Berreman mode through a combination of Au mirrors and ultra-thin layers of low-loss uniaxial/biaxial anisotropic 2D van der Waals polar crystal hBN/alpha-MoO3, a narrowband absorption/emission peak is realized in the mid-infrared region. The measured quality-factor of Berreman mode for hBN/Au and alpha-MoO3/Au structure can reach up to 134 and 164, respectively. The deep subwavelength thickness (similar to nm) and bilayer architecture simplify the fabrication process. Furthermore, taking advantage of the in-plane birefringence originating from alpha-MoO3, the polarization of the absorbed/emitted radiation can be controlled through this planar configuration. Such ultrathin narrowband absorbers/emitters provide new opportunities for the advancements in thermal sources, infrared sensors, and thermophotovoltaic power generation systems.
Wide Wavelength-Tunable Narrow-Band Thermal Radiation from Moiré Patterns

Abstract:Wavelength-tunable narrow-band thermal emitters are highly desired for various applications including multigas sensing. However, current thermal emitters suffer from either too broad bandwidth or too narrow tuning range. Here, based on the moire effect, we provide a scheme of wavelength-tunable narrow-band thermal emitters with tunability over a wide wavelength range and operation at an arbitrary temperature. Thanks to the unique sensitivity of moire patterns, our emitter achieves a tuning range to bandwidth ratio of 313, which is 68 times larger than the previous largest value ever reported.

Abstract:A narrowband thermal emitter exhibits higher energy efficiency and sensitivity in molecule sensing and other mid-infrared (MIR) spectral range applications compared to a blackbody emitter. Most narrowband thermal emitters involving surface plasmons have a relatively low quality factor (Q-factor) and require complex fabrication processes. Here we propose a bilayer cavity-enhanced Tamm plasmon (TP) structure with a high/low refractive index bilayer sandwiched between a metal and distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) to achieve an enhanced Q-factor and maintain higher emittance over a conventional pure DBR-metal TP structure-based emitters. The large optical thickness of the high/low index bilayer cavity aids in increasing the Q-factor (∼172 for emission) of the cavity resonance. Furthermore, a tunable Q-factor is achieved (Q from 172 to 47 for emission) by incorporating phase-changing material Ge2Sb2Te5. This easy-to-fabricate and tunable high Q-factor emitter is competent as a narrowband MIR light source in molecule sensing, typically gas sensing applications.

Abstract:Thermal radiation with narrow bandwidth and well-defined emission directions is highly sought after for a variety of applications, ranging from infrared sensing and thermal imaging to thermophotovoltaics. Here, a large-area (4-inch-diameter) long-wavelength infrared thermal emitter is presented, which is spectrally selective, highly directional, and easily fabricated. The basic structure of the proposed thermal emitter is composed of a truncated one-dimensional photonic crystal and a continuous metallic film separated by a dielectric spacer. Experimental results show that the emitter exhibits a narrowband thermal emittance peak of 92% in the normal direction at the wavenumber of 943.4 cm(-1) with a bandwidth of 12.5 cm(-1) and a narrow angular emission lobe with a limited solid angle of 0.325 sr (0.115 sr) for s (p) polarization. Numerical simulation analyses are performed to corroborate the experimental observations. Temporal coupled-mode theory combined with transfer matrix method is employed to analytically investigate the emission properties of the structure, which not only can be used to understand the experimental results, but also plays a certain guidance role in designing a thermal emitter with the desired properties. The present thermal emitter can be implemented for thermal photonics management, allowing applications in thermal imaging and medical systems, etc.

Abstract:Narrow bandwidth and highly efficient mid-infrared (MIR) thermal emitters with low manufacturing cost and simple geometries have been continuously pursued by scientists. Unfortunately, conventional MIR thermal emitters based on metallic metamaterials suffer from large bandwidths mainly due to dissipations losses. In this work, we present our experimental demonstration of MIR thermal emitters with ultra-narrow bandwidth by exploiting the quasi bound-state-in-the-continuum mode supported by an all-dielectric metasurface structure. The whole structure is composed of a zigzag array of germanium elliptical disks, separated from the gold conductive substrate by a dielectric spacer layer made from the refractory material of Al 2 O 3 . Our experimental results demonstrate that even with an amorphous form of evaporated materials for both dielectrics, an emission bandwidth around 80 nm in the MIR can be obtained, one order of magnitude narrower than those achieved with metallic metamaterials. The bandwidth can in principle be further narrowed by a large extent when dielectrics of better quality are used. We further demonstrate with numerical results that this thermal emitter features additional advantages including high directionality, linear polarization, and large spectral tunability. Our results represent a significant step towards the realization of high-performance and low-cost MIR thermal emitters.

Abstract:Control over the directionality of thermal emission plays a fundamental role in efficient heat transport. Although nanophotonic technologies have demonstrated the capability for angular‐selective thermal emission, achieving asymmetric directional thermal emission in reciprocal systems with energy directed to a single output angle remains challenging due to symmetric band dispersion. In this work, we present a general strategy for achieving asymmetric directional thermal emission in reciprocal systems. With periodic perturbation and broken mirror symmetry, metasurfaces behave as resonant metagratings whose resonances can be diffracted to symmetric output angles with distinct efficiency, allowing for high emissivity towards a single direction. The asymmetric directional thermal emitter is experimentally demonstrated at mid‐infrared wavelengths with high emissivity (ε = 0.61) at the observation angle of +30°, and low emissivity (ε<0.3) at other angles. This work highlights the potential for manipulating the directionality of thermal emission, which holds promise for developing ultrathin customized thermal sources and impacts on various thermal‐engineering applications. Highly tunable ultra-narrow-resonances with optical nano-antenna phased arrays in the infrared

Abstract:We report our recent development in pursuing high Quality-Factor (high-Q factor) plasmonic resonances, with vertically aligned two dimensional (2-D) periodic nanorod arrays. The 2-D vertically aligned nano-antenna array can have high-Q resonances varying arbitrarily from near infrared to terahertz regime, as the antenna resonances of the nanorod are highly tunable through material properties, the length of the nanorod, and the orthogonal polarization direction with respect to the lattice surface,. The high-Q in combination with the small optical mode volume gives a very high Purcell factor, which could potentially be applied to various enhanced nonlinear photonics or optoelectronic devices. The 'hot spots' around the nanorods can be easily harvested as no index-matching is necessary. The resonances maintain their high-Q factor with the change of the environmental refractive index, which is of great interest for molecular sensing.

A novel mid-infrared thermal emitter with ultra-narrow bandwidth and large spectral tunability based on the bound state in the continuum

Abstract:The development of efficient, compact and low-cost mid-infrared (MIR) sources with easy manufacturing is vital in a variety of applications including gas sensing, thermal photovoltaic power generation, infrared imaging, among others. In this work, we demonstrate that a novel type of MIR thermal emitters with ultra-narrow bandwidth and broad spectral tunability can be realized based on a new operation principle employing the concept of bound state in the continuum (BIC). Using an elaborately designed structure composed of two interdigitated gratings with the same pitch and different stripe width on a slab supported by a conducting substrate, the quasi-BIC mode with both ultra-high Q-factor (>104) and large absorbance/emittance can be achieved, resulting from the destructive interference between the couplings of two guided-mode resonances back to free space. At the operation wavelength of 7.7851 μm, even when the metal dissipation is considered, a near-unity emission at resonance with the full-width at half-maximum less than 0.3 nm is numerically presented, which is three orders of magnitude narrower than conventional metallic metamaterial based thermal emitters. By applying a geometrical scaling of the structure, the operation wavelength can be flexibly extended to other wavelengths of the MIR region. The presented novel thermal emitter with economic advantages and high performances of both ultra-narrow bandwidth and broad wavelength-tunability, will make great impact in practical applications.
Ultra-broadband and wide-angle nonreciprocal thermal emitter based on Weyl semimetal metamaterials

Abstract:Nonreciprocal thermal radiation can violate Kirchhoff's law and exhibit different emissivity at symmetric polar angles relative to the normal direction. Realizing a mid-infrared broadband nonreciprocal thermal emitter with a wide emission angle range is a fundamental yet challenging task, particularly without the need for an external magnetic field. Here, we propose a nonreciprocal thermal emitter operating in the mid-infrared that achieves a significantly nonreciprocal thermal radiation in a wavelength range from 12 μm to 20 μm, spanning a wide angular range from 16° to 88°. This is achieved by utilizing a multilayered Weyl semimetal (WSM)/dielectric structure, which takes the advantage of the strong nonreciprocity of WSMs with different Fermi levels and epsilon-near-zero-induced Brewster modes. The results provide a wider angular range in the broad mid-infrared band compared to previous attempts. The robustness of the nonreciprocal radiation is confirmed through wavelength-averaged emissivity across the azimuth angle φ range from 0° to 360°. Some possible materials and nanostructures as dielectric layers are discussed, showcasing the flexibility and reliability of the design. This work holds promising potential applications such as enhanced radiative cooling, thermal emitters for medical sensing and infrared heating, energy conversion, etc.

Abstract:Conventional thermal emitters, such as a blackbody or the incandescent filament of a light bulb, lack the directionality or narrow linewidth required in many applications such as thermophotovoltaics and infrared sensing. Although thermal emission from bulk materials is well understood based on phenomenological heat transfer concepts like emissivity and the framework of classical electrodynamics, there still remains a significant gap in our understanding of thermal emission at the nanoscale. In this work, by leveraging the quasi-normal mode theory, we derive a general and self-consistent formalism to describe the thermal radiation from nanoscale resonant thermal emitters with high-order symmetric geometries, which are the basic building blocks of metasurfaces and metamaterials. The complex symmetrical geometries of the emitters yield degeneracy of quasi-normal modes. The introduction of the degeneracy can strongly mediate far-field thermal emission from nanoscale resonators, which is closely correlated to the number of degenerate modes and the coupling among the degenerate modes. Our formalism from the quasi-normal mode theory serves as a general guideline to design the complex metastructures with high-ordered degeneracy to achieve optimized absorption or emission capabilities.

Thermal Vertical Emitter of Ultra‐High Directionality Achieved Through Nonreciprocal Magneto‐Optical Lattice Resonances

Abstract:Kirchhoff's law shows that reciprocal materials have equal spectral emissivity at two symmetric polar angles, which is a fundamental limit for a thermal emitter to achieve a small angular divergence in the normal direction. Nonreciprocal materials allow violation of Kirchhoff's law as the emissivity at the two symmetric polar angles can be different. However, achieving strong nonreciprocal thermal radiation near zero angle is challenging. In this work, to reduce the power consumption of a light source for e.g. gas sensing, an ultra-high-directional nonreciprocal thermal vertical emitter is proposed, with a periodic structure of magneto-optical material. When B = 3 T or 1.5 T, magneto-optical lattice resonances enable the near-perfect emissivity at 22.36 mu m or 22.99 mu m at zero angle. The strong nonreciprocity contributed by the collective modes allows for a near-complete violation of Kirchhoff's law at small angles of +/- 1 degrees. The nonreciprocal emitters have a very small angular divergence (approximate to 1 degrees), which is better than that of the state-of-the-art thermal emitters. The highly directional nonreciprocal thermal emission is robust despite +/- 25% change in material loss and +/- 5% fluctuation in structural parameters. This work should inspire the design of high-directional nonreciprocal thermal emitters and their applications in high-resolution thermal imaging, infrared gas sensing, biomedical breath monitoring, and so on.
Whole LWIR Directional Thermal Emission Based on ENZ Thin Films

Abstract:Long-wave infrared (LWIR) of 8-14 mu m is an imperative atmospheric transmission window for applications such as infrared detectors, radiative cooling, and infrared stealth. Attempts to manipulate thermal emission in the LWIR band consist of either directional emission but narrowband or LWIR emission but non-directional. Directional thermal emission covering the entire LWIR band has remained elusive, so far. Here, a whole LWIR directional thermal emitter is introduced consisting of top epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) films (SiO2/SiO/Al2O3), a dielectric gap (Ge), and bottom ENZ films (TiO2/Ta2O5) on a metal. The emitter exhibits high emissivity (>0.9) in p-polarization at specific directions (72 degrees-82 degrees) covering the entire 8-14 mu m atmospheric window. Additionally, infrared encryption information on the emitter can only be observed in p-polarization in the oblique direction. This approach introduces a new route toward simultaneous control of bandwidth and directionality of thermal emission and has inclusive applications such as infrared camouflage and energy management.
Tunable Narrowband Silicon-Based Thermal Emitter with Excellent High-Temperature Stability Fabricated by Lithography-Free Methods

Abstract:Thermal emitters with properties of wavelength-selective and narrowband have been highly sought after for a variety of potential applications due to their high energy efficiency in the mid-infrared spectral range. In this study, we theoretically and experimentally demonstrate the tunable narrowband thermal emitter based on fully planar Si-W-SiN/SiNO multilayer, which is realized by the excitation of Tamm plasmon polaritons between a W layer and a SiN/SiNO-distributed Bragg reflector. In conjunction with electromagnetic simulations by the FDTD method, the optimum structure design of the emitter is implemented by 2.5 periods of DBR structure, and the corresponding emitter exhibits the nearly perfect narrowband absorption performance at the resonance wavelength and suppressed absorption performance in long wave range. Additionally, the narrowband absorption peak is insensitive to polarization mode and has a considerable angular tolerance of incident light. Furthermore, the actual high-quality Si-W-SiN/SiNO emitters are fabricated through lithography-free methods including magnetron sputtering and PECVD technology. The experimental absorption spectra of optimized emitters are found to be in good agreement with the simulated absorption spectra, showing the tunable narrowband absorption with all peak values of over 95%. Remarkably, the fabricated Si-W-SiN/SiNO emitter presents excellent high-temperature stability for several heating/cooling cycles confirmed up to 1200 K in Ar ambient. This easy-to-fabricate and tunable narrowband refractory emitter paves the way for practical designs in various photonic and thermal applications, such as thermophotovoltaic and IR radiative heaters.

Abstract:Thermal emission control has been attracting increased attention in both fundamental science and many applications including infrared sensing, radiative cooling and thermophotovoltaics. In this paper, a tunable dual-band thermal emitter including phase-changing material Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) is experimentally demonstrated. Two emission peak wavelengths are at 7.36 μm and 5.40 μm at amorphous phase, and can be continuously tuned to 10.01 μm and 7.56 μm while GST is tuned to crystalline phase. Compared with other dual-band metamaterial emitters, this tunable dual-band thermal emitter is only composed of an array of single-sized GST nanodisks (on a gold film), which can greatly simplify the design and manufacturing process, and pave the way towards dynamical thermal emission control.
Single-peak and narrow-band mid-infrared thermal emitters driven by mirror-coupled plasmonic quasi-BIC metasurfaces

Abstract:Wavelength-selective thermal emitters (WS-EMs) hold considerable appeal due to the scarcity of cost-effective, narrow-band sources in the mid-to-long-wave infrared spectrum. WS-EMs achieved via dielectric materials typically exhibit thermal emission peaks with high quality factors (Q factors), but their optical responses are prone to temperature fluctuations. Metallic EMs, on the other hand, show negligible drifts with temperature changes, but their Q factors usually hover around 10. In this study, we introduce and experimentally verify a novel EM grounded in plasmonic quasi-bound states in the continuum (BICs) within a mirror-coupled system. Our design numerically delivers an ultra-narrowband single peak with a Q factor of approximately 64, and near-unity absorptance that can be freely tuned within an expansive band of more than 10 {\mu}m. By introducing air slots symmetrically, the Q factor can be further augmented to around 100. Multipolar analysis and phase diagrams are presented to elucidate the operational principle. Importantly, our infrared spectral measurements affirm the remarkable resilience of our designs' resonance frequency in the face of temperature fluctuations over 300 degrees Celsius. Additionally, we develop an effective impedance model based on the optical nanoantenna theory to understand how further tuning of the emission properties is achieved through precise engineering of the slot. This research thus heralds the potential of applying plasmonic quasi-BICs in designing ultra-narrowband, temperature-stable thermal emitters in mid-infrared. Moreover, such a concept may be adaptable to other frequency ranges, such as near-infrared, Terahertz, and Gigahertz.

Abstract:Directional control of thermal emission over its broad wavelength range is a fundamental challenge. Gradient epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) material supporting Berreman mode has been proposed as a promising approach. However, the bandwidth is still inherently limited due to the availability of ENZ materials covering a broad bandwidth and additional undesired omnidirectional modes in multilayer stacking with increased thickness. Here, we show that broadband directional thermal emission can be realized beyond the previously considered epsilon-near-zero and Berreman mode region. We then establish a universal approach based on effective medium theory to realizing ultra-broadband directional thermal emitter. We numerically demonstrate strong (emissivity >0.8) directional (80 ± 5°) thermal emission covering the entire thermal emission wavelength range (5–30 μm) by using only two materials. This approach offers a new capability for manipulating thermal emission with potential applications in high-efficiency information encryption, energy collection and utilization, thermal camouflaging, and infrared detection.

Abstract:Abstract Nanophotonic engineering of light–matter interaction at subwavelength scale allows thermal radiation that is fundamentally different from that of traditional thermal emitters and provides exciting opportunities for various thermal-photonic applications. We propose a new kind of integrated and electrically controlled thermal emitter that exploits layered metamaterials with lithography-free and dielectric/metallic nanolayers. We demonstrate both theoretically and experimentally that the proposed concept can create a strong photonic bandgap in the visible regime and allow small impedance mismatch at the infrared wavelengths, which gives rise to optical features of significantly enhanced emissivity at the broad infrared wavelengths of 1.4–14 μm as well as effectively suppressed emissivity in the visible region. The electrically driven metamaterial devices are optically and thermally stable at temperatures up to ∼800 K with electro-optical conversion efficiency reaching ∼30%. We believe that the proposed high-efficiency thermal emitters will pave the way toward integrated infrared light source platforms for various thermal-photonic applications and particularly provide a novel alternative for cost-effective, compact, low glare, and energy-efficient infrared heating.
