Abstract:Metal sulfides are promissing electrode materials for supercapacitors, but they suffer from low electrical conductivity, poor rate capability and mechanical instability. To tackle these drawbacks, here, Co3S4 hollow nanocages (HNCs) derived from ZIF-67 have been inlaid on polypyrrole (PPy) tubes, forming a Co3S4-HNCs@PPy hybrid with intertwined "Co3S4-to-PPy-to-Co3S4" conductive networks via a facile solution method. The as-synthesized Co3S4-HNCs@PPy shows outstanding electrochemical activity (1706 F g(-1) at 1 A g(-1)) along with high rate capability (73.2% retention at 10 A g(-1)), significantly superior to individual Co3S4-HNCs, PPy or a physical mixture of Co3S4 and PPy. Remarkably, an asymmetric supercapacitor based on Co3S4-HNCs@PPy is capable of affording a high energy density of 50.5 W h kg(-1) (at 849.1 W kg -1 ) with high durability (82.8% retention after 10,000 cycles). The outstanding supercapacitor property can be attributed to the synergistic advantages of the intertwined "Co3S4-to-PPy-to-Co3S4" networks including rich reactive sites, shortened charge diffusion pathway as well as enhanced charge transfer and mechanical stability. Abstract:Co3O4@CoNi-layered double hydroxide (LDH) core/shell nanosheet array on Ni foam was prepared as an integrated battery-type electrode for supercapacitors by growth of CoNi-LDH nanosheets shell on the surface of Co3O4 plates core. The resulting composite material exhibits high specific capacitance (2676.9 F g(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1)) and excellent cycling stability. The improved electrochemical behavior is benefited from the typical mesoporous structure, which shorten the diffusion distance of OH-in the electrolyte and the strong core/shell binding interaction among Co3O4 and CoNi-LDH nanosheet arrays. Additionally, an assembled asymmetric supercapacitor (ASCs) device using as-fabricated Co3O4@CoNi-LDH as positive electrode and activated carbon (AC) as negative electrode also exhibits a high energy density of 61.23 Wh kg(-1) at a high power density of 750 W kg(-1), furthermore, still remains 24.8 Wh kg(-1) even at a higher power density of 7500 W kg(-1). Most importantly, a red light-emitting diode (LED) can be illuminated by two connected ASCs, indicating that assynthesized Co3O4@ CoNi-LDH possesses great potential for practical applications. As a result, this work demonstrates a feasible strategy for the design and fabrication of metal oxides/LDH composites for applications in energy storage systems.
Shish-kebab Type MnCo2O4@Co3O4 Nanoneedle Arrays Derived from MnCo-LDH@ZIF-67 for High-Performance Supercapacitors and Efficient Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:One-dimensional micro-/nanostructure arrays with excellent synergistic effect have attracted considerable interest for their potential applications in energy storge and conversion devices. In this work, the uniform ZIF-67 rhombic dodecahedron penetrated CoMn-LDH nanoneedle arrays were firstly synthesized and then transformed into shish-kebab type MnCo2O4@Co3O4 nanoneedle arrays by thermal annealing in air. The resulting nanoneedle arrays exhibit high specific capacitance (1440C cm(-2) at 1.0 mA cm(-2)) and excellent cycling stability while evaluated as promising electrodes for battery-type supercapacitor. An assembled asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) device using MnCo2O4@Co3O4 as positive electrode and activated carbon (AC) as negative electrode also exhibits a high energy density of 31 Wh kg(-1) at a power density of 208.5 W kg(-1), furthermore, still remains 14.6 Wh kg(-1) even at a higher power density of 3326.6 W kg(-1). Importantly, a red light-emitting diode (LED) can be illuminated about 6 min, indicating a great potential for practical applications of the ASC. Besides, the MnCo2O4@Co3O4 exhibits much better electrocatalytic activity for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). As a result, this work demonstrates a feasible strategy for the design and fabrication of 1D shish-kebab type nanoneedle arrays with multiple functions.

Abstract:Structure and defect manipulation are regarded as efficacious strategies to boost the electrochemical activity of electrode materials. Herein, the construction of one-dimensional (1D) porous S-doped Co3O4 nanorods with rich oxygen vacancies is demonstrated through a facile metal-organic framework-engaged strategy. Starting from a Co-NTA (NTA = nitrilotriacetic acid) precursor, the S-doped Co3O4 nanorods were obtained after calcination and sulfurization. As a faradaic electrode material, the S-doped Co3O4 nanorods exhibited enhanced specific capacitance (319.3 C g-1 at 0.5 A g-1) in comparison with the Co3O4 intermediate product (98.3 C g-1) and the Co-NTA precursor (40.2 C g-1). Besides, it showed an ultra-high rate capability of 83.3% with a 20-fold increase in current density (10 A g-1). The hybrid supercapacitor comprising the S-doped Co3O4 (cathode) and the activated carbon (anode) showed a high energy density of 38.1 W h kg-1 at a power density of 800 W kg-1, and 31.1 W h kg-1 was maintained at 8000 W kg-1. It also has excellent electrochemical stability, and 87.57% of its initial capacitance was maintained after 5000 cycles, demonstrating great prospects in electrochemical energy storage applications. The excellent energy storage property of the S-doped Co3O4 is due to its unique 1D S-doped Co3O4 porous nanorod structure, i.e., large surface area, easy diffusion of ions, good conductivity, and rich redox reactions. This work may pave the way for the fabrication of desirable electrode materials through vacancy defects and nano-/microstructure engineering.

Oxygen vacancies enriched nickel cobalt based nanoflower cathodes: Mechanism and application of the enhanced energy storage

Abstract:The rational design of oxygen vacancies and electronic microstructures of electrode materials for energy storage devices still remains a challenge. Herein, we synthesize nickel cobalt-based oxides nanoflower arrays assembled with nanowires grown on Ni foam via the hydrothermal process followed annealing process in air and argon atmospheres respectively. It is found that the annealing atmosphere has a vital influence on the oxygen vacancies and electronic microstructures of resulting NiCo2O4 (NCO-Air) and CoNiO2 (NCO-Ar) products, which NCO-Ar has more oxygen vacancies and larger specific surface area of 163.48 m2/g. The density functional theory calculation reveals that more oxygen vacancies can provide more electrons to adsorb -OH free anions resulting in superior electrochemical energy storage performance. Therefore, the assembled asymmetric supercapacitor of NCO-Ar//active carbon delivers an excellent energy density of 112.52 Wh/kg at a power density of 558.73 W/kg and the fabricated NCO-Ar//Zn battery presents the specific capacity of 180.20 mAh/g and energy density of 308.14 Wh/kg. The experimental measurement and theoretical calculation not only provide a facile strategy to construct flower-like mesoporous architectures with massive oxygen vacancies, but also demonstrate that NCO-Ar is an ideal electrode material for the next generation of energy storage devices.

Abstract:Herein, flower-like ZnO& ZnO nanorod arrays based on carbon cloth (ZnO& NRs/CC) is designed based on ZnO&NiO nanosheets epitaxially grown on C-ZnO nanorod arrays by electrochemical deposition and chemical reaction method. Notably, the ZnO& NRs/CC possess significant synergistic effect of ZnO and NiO, 3-dimension scaffolding of C-ZnO NRs, and importantly, abundant oxygen vacancy defects, thus rendering them deliver a specific capacity of 1001.5 F g −1 at 3 A g −1 current density and maintains 92.33 % retention after 20,000 cycles in 1 M KOH electrolyte. Further, theoretical calculation certifies that the abundant oxygen vacancies in interface model of ZnO and NiO are favor of rapid electron transfer, ion diffusion, and adsorption/desorption between electrolyte ions and the surface of active material. Moreover, an all-solid symmetric supercapacitor is also fabricated using the ZnO& NRs/CC and gel electrolyte, which shows the energy density of 27.5 Wh kg −1 at the power density of 4.5 kW kg −1 , and ultrahigh capacitance retention of 102.83 % after 10,000 cycles. These research results demonstrate that the design of nanomaterials with numerous oxygen vacancies, unique flower-like structure, and synergistic effect of ZnO and NiO may open up new opportunities for the development of high-performance supercapacitors.

Direct Growth of Oxygen Vacancy-Enriched Co3O4 Nanosheets on Carbon Nanotubes for High-Performance Supercapacitors

Abstract:Ultrathin Co3O4 nanosheets (NSs) with abundant oxygen vacancies on conductive carbon nanotube (CNT) nanocomposites (termed as Co3O4-NSs/CNTs) are easily achieved by an effective NaBH4-assisted cyanogel hydrolysis strategy under ambient conditions. The specific capacitance of Co3O4-NSs/CNTs with 5% CNT mass can reach 1280.4 F g-1 at 1 A g-1 and retain 112.5% even after 10 000 cycles, demonstrating very high electrochemical capability and stability. When assembled in the two-electrode Co3O4-NSs/CNTs-5%//reduced graphene oxide (rGO) system, a maximum specific energy density of 37.2 Wh kg-1 (160.2 W kg-1) is obtained at room temperature. Ultrathin structure of nanosheets, abundant oxygen vacancies, and the synergistic effect between Co3O4-NSs and CNTs are crucial factors for excellent electrochemical performance. Specifically, these characteristics favor rapid electron transfer, complete exposure of the active interface, and sufficient adsorption/desorption of electrolyte ions within the active material. This work gives insights into the efficient construction of two-dimensional hybrid electrodes with high performance for the new-generation energy storage system.

Abstract:Well-designed structures with sufficient electroactive sites are vital for pseudocapacitive materials to yield high performances. Herein, we propose a facile electrochemical activation strategy to synthesize Ni/Co oxyhydroxides nanoflowers decorated with N, S co-doped carbon fragments (Ni/Co-OOH/NSCF). The applied-voltage can rapidly induce significant structural transformation of pristine Ni/Co sulfides particles into Ni/Co-OOH nanoflowers. Moreover, this evolution process endows the thin nanoflakes with abundant pores. Benefiting from the massively exposed active sites, rich mixed valences of bimetals, and high-speed electron/ion transport pathways, the Ni/Co-OOH/NSCF exhibits an excellent capacity of 237 mAh g−1 (equalling 853 C g−1) at 1 A g−1 and high rate capability of 61% at 20 A g−1 even at a high mass loading of 7 mg cm−2. The assembled asymmetric supercapacitor based on Ni/Co-OOH/NSCF delivers a superior energy density of 94.3 Wh kg−1 at the power density of 3.6 kW kg−1, and excellent stability of 90% capacitance retention after 5000 cycles, which outperforms most of reported transition metal compounds. This general synthetic method can be facilely realized without using any reagents and tedious procedures. Therefore, this work opens a new avenue for the structure manipulation of advanced materials toward energy storage.

Abstract:Cobalt-based materials exhibit high theoretical specific capacitance and desirable electrocatalytic activity. However, their practical specific capacitance and electrocatalytic activity are significantly constrained by a lack of active sites and limited conductivity. Herein, N, P and S-doped hollow Co3O4@Co3V2O8 heterostructure nanocube is reasonably constructed via in-situ ion exchange method combined with calcination strategy. Besides, the relationship of heterogeneous interface and heteroatom doping on electrochemical performance is explored. The heterogeneous interface provides rich active sites and accelerates electron transfer. Additionally, N, P, and S-doping regulate the internal electronic structures, boost ion transfer rates, and increase active sites. The hollow structure accelerates the adsorption and desorption processes due to the increased electrochemical reaction sites. Benefiting from internal electronic structure and structural advantages, N, P, S-Co3O4@Co3V2O8 exhibits low overpotentials (561 mV and 649 mV at the current density of 50 mA/cm2 and 100 mA/cm2), low Tafel slopes (100.9 mV/dec), prospective specific capacitance (550.2 F/g) and outstanding charge/discharge behavior with remarkable life span. N, P, S-Co3O4@Co3V2O8 based device delivers favorable energy density (21.3 Wh/kg at 802.3 W/kg), which surpasses most of the latest cobalt-based materials. Overall, this work provides novel insights into the development of highly active and durable bifunctional electrode materials.

Thiocyanogen-modulated N, S Co-doped lignin hierarchical porous carbons for high-performance aqueous supercapacitors

Abstract:Constructing heteroatom-doped porous carbons with distinct charge storage properties is significant for high-energy-density supercapacitors, yet it remains a formidable challenge. Herein, we employed a thiocyanogen-modulated alkali activation strategy to synthesize N and S co-doped lignin hierarchical porous carbon (NSLHPC). In this process, thiocyanogen serves as a surface modulation mediator to substitute oxygen with nitrogen and sulfur species, while the combination of KOH activation and MgO template generates numerous nanopores within the carbon structure. The three-dimensional interconnected nanosheet architecture facilitates rapid ion transfer and enhances accessibility to active sites. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that introducing N and S heteroatoms through oxygen substitution reduces the adsorption energy barrier of Zn2+. Consequently, the optimized NSLHPC exhibits a remarkable specific capacitance of 438F/g at 0.5 A/g in 6 M KOH, delivering an energy density of 10.4 Wh/kg in the symmetric supercapacitor and an impressive energy density of 104.9 Wh/kg in the zinc-ion hybrid capacitor. The NSLHPC cathode also shows an excellent lifespan with capacitance retention of 99.0 % and Columbic efficiency of 100 % over 10,000 cycles. This study presents innovative strategies for engineering high-performance porous carbon electrode materials by emphasizing pore structure modulation and N, S co-doping as crucial approaches.
Honeycomb-like nitrogen-doped porous carbon decorated with Co3O4 nanoparticles for superior electrochemical performance pseudo-capacitive lithium storage and supercapacitors

Abstract:The three-dimensional honeycomb-like N-doped porous carbon networks decorated with tricobalt tetraoxide nanoparticles (N-CN/Co3O4) were synthesized via energy- and cost-efficient NaCl-assisted strategy. Benefiting from the unique designed configuration, the intrinsic low electron conductivity and relatively huge volumetric expansion during the charge/discharge processes were effective relieved. Furthermore, the nitrogen elements are introduced to regulate the element composition, optimizing the surface activity and improving the electrochemical performance. Under the synergistic effect of the optimization measures, the prepared electrodes demonstrated excellent electrochemical performance. Particularly, the N-CN/Co3O4 electrodes showed capacitive-dominated lithium storage behavior with a high reversible discharge capacity of 1323.2 mAh g−1 after 100 lifespans at 0.05 A g−1, which was far beyond its theoretical specific capacity, and 766.7 mAh g−1 after 700 cycles at 1.0 A g−1. The capacitive-dominated lithium storage behavior was proved by the quantitative kinetic analysis and the supercapacitor (SCs) behavior, where a 60.66% fraction of the total charge resulting from capacitive contribution was achieved for lithium storage, the specific capacitance of 1115.4 F g−1 was obtained at 1.0 A g−1, and 98.6% of the initial specific capacitance was still maintained after 5000 cycles at 12.0 A g−1 as electrodes for supercapacitors. This work offers a simple and efficient route to prepare high-performance electrodes for lithium storage and SCs, lighting the approaches to improve the electrochemical properties of transition metal oxide electrodes.

Effective Enhancement of Electrochemical Energy Storage of Cobalt-Based Nanocrystals by Hybridization with Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Nanocages

Abstract:Cobalt-based oxygenic compounds Co(OH)2, CoO and Co3O4 are attractive for electrochemical energy storage owing to their high theoretical capacities and pseudocapacitive properties. Despite the great efforts to their compositional and morphological regulations, the performances to date are still quite limited owing to the low active surface area and sluggish charge transfer kinetics. Herein, different Co-based nanocrystals (Co-NCs) were conveniently anchored on the hierarchical nitrogen-doped carbon nanocages (hNCNCs) with high specific surface area and coexisting micro-meso-macropores to decrease the size and facilitate the charge transfer. Accordingly, a high specific capacity of 1170 F g−1 is achieved at 2 A g−1 for the Co(OH)2/hNCNCs hybrid, in which the capacitance of Co(OH)2 (2214 $${\rm{F\;g}}_{\rm{Co({OH})_2}}^{ - 1}$$ ) is approaching to its theoretical maximum (2595 F g−1), demonstrating the high utilization of active materials by the hybridization with N-doped nanocarbons. This study also reveals that these Co-NCs store/release electrical energy via the same reversible redox reaction despite their different pristine compositions. This insight on the energy storage of Co-based nanomaterials suggests that the commonly-employed transformation of the Co-NCs from Co(OH)2 to CoO and Co3O4 on carbon supports is unnecessary and even could be harmful to the energy storage performance. The result is instructive to develop high-energy-density electrodes from transition metal compounds.

Abstract:Battery-type materials for supercapacitors have attracted increasing research interest owing to their high energy density. However, their poor electrode kinetics severely limit the utilization of redox-active sites on the electrode surface, resulting in subpar electrochemical performance. Herein, we incorporate both Cu dopants and O vacancies into Co3O4 nanocrystals confined in a carbon matrix (Ov-Cu-Co3O4@C) which are assembled into nanowires. This heterostructured architecture with multifunctional nanogeometries provides a high intercomponent synergy, enabling high accessibility to active species. Moreover, the Cu dopants and O vacancies in Ov-Cu-Co3O4@C synergistically manipulate the electronic states and provide more accessible active sites, resulting in enhanced electrical conductivity and enriched redox chemistry. The Ov-Cu-Co3O4@C achieves a significantly improved specific capacity and rate performance, exceeding those of Co3O4@C. MOF-Derived Hollow and Porous Co 3 O 4 Nanocages for Superior Hybrid Supercapacitor Electrodes

Abstract:The development of hollow and porous materials is essential for effective energy storage and conversion owing to their facile transport of electrons and ions. Herein, through a facile low-temperature thermal decomposition reaction of ZIF-67 crystals, hollow Co3O4 nanocages composed of numerous nanoparticles with a porous structure are prepared. These hollow and porous Co3O4 nanocages (Co3O4 HPCs) possess a pore size distribution between 20 and 60 nm and a large Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface area of 211.79 m2 g–1. Benefitting from the large surface area, a maximum specific capacitance of 140.0 F g–1 can be calculated. Furthermore, the assembled Co3O4 HPCs//activated carbon hybrid supercapacitor can deliver an energy density of 19.8 W h kg–1 and 97.3% capacitance retention during 5000 cycles. Abstract:The demand for energy storage systems with superior performance has led to the creation of hybrid supercapacitor device. With proper designs, the hybrid supercapacitive materials can achieve high performance while reducing the overall cost. Herein, a novel method is developed for preparing three-dimensional hierarchical graphitic carbon nanocomposites with highly dispersed mixed Co-Ni oxide nanoparticles (Co-Ni-O/3DG) by a facile one-pot process involving carbonization and subsequent oxidation of metal ion doped biopolymer precursors. The mixed metal nanoparticles produced during carbonization enabled a top-down preparation of 3D graphitic carbon nanosheets. The nanocomposites were fully characterized and showed excellent electrochemical performance supported by the DFT calculation. Specific capacitance of 1586 F.g(-1) was achieved (current density 1.0 A.g(-1)), with capacitance retention of 94.5% after 10 000 cycles demonstrating exceptional cycling stability. In an asymmetric full-cell system using a Co-Ni-O/3DG positive electrode, high energy densities of 32.8-54.7 Wh kg(-1) associated with very high power densities of 11358-748.6 W kg(-1) were obtained, comparable to the most advanced contemporary supercapacitive materials, while they also possesses an improved cyclability as well as using biosourced staring materials, underlining the electrode's potential application in hybrid supercapacitor devices.

Abstract:NiCo2O4 and Co3O4 have been explored as promising candidates for supercapacitor (SCs) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) featured with unique physical and chemical characteristics. However, they suffer from sluggish electrons transfer accompanied by poor active sites. It is the common way that silicon dioxide (SiO2) engaged as a sacrificial core could be tightly wrapped by a shell to prepare the hollow/porous target products with satisfying specific surface area. But to reversely think it, using SiO2 as sacrificial shell could be another way to unlock the bottleneck of NiCo2O4 and Co3O4 in this direction. Herein, a facile encapsulated self-activation strategy coupled with partial reduction method is described to construct order mesoporous NiCo2O4 and Co3O4 microspheres with oxygen vacancies modulation (SA-NiCo2O4 (Ov) and SA-Co3O4 (Ov)), respectively. The specific surface area of SA-NiCo2O4 (Ov) and SA-Co3O4 (Ov) microspheres is significantly increased by a factor of three after introducing encapsulated self-activation strategy, respectively. The superior specific surface area could provide numerous electroactive sites and large electrode/electrolyte interfaces for fast ions diffusion and redox reaction. The oxygen vacancies could offer favorable conductivity and boost ions diffusion. In virtue of intrinsic characteristics and structural advantage, SA-NiCo2O4 (Ov) and SA-Co3O4 (Ov) demonstrate decent specific capacitance (448.2 C/g and 375.3 C/g), and the corresponding asymmetrical devices deliver favorable energy density (31.2 Wh/kg and 29.4 Wh/kg), respectively. Furthermore, SA-NiCo2O4 (Ov) and SA-Co3O4 (Ov) could efficiently catalyze HER with a low overpotential of 141.1 mV and 155.6 mV at 10 mA/cm2 and confirm beneficial dynamics, respectively. This present strategy of using self-activation and oxygen-vacancies to enhance electrochemical properties may open up new opportunities for developing high-performance metal oxide catalysts/electrodes for energy conversion and storage.

Abstract:Crystal plane engineering and defect engineering are feasible approaches to tune the electrochemical performance of nanocmaterials. Herein, a carambola-like CoWO4 microsphere with preferred crystal planes and oxygen vacancies is synthesized by a microwave-assisted hydrothermal process together with post annealing treatment. The in-depth observation on microstructure and electrochemical tests suggest that it is the new preferred crystal planes and oxygen vacancies in CoWO4 that improves conductivity and reaction activity to lead to a much higher capacity. Further density functional theory (DFT) analysis reveals that tuning the preferred crystal plane and introduction of oxygen vacancy into CoWO4 not only effectively enhance electronic conductivity, but also promote OH− adsorption/desorption, and reduce electronic transmission barrier. As a result, the as-obtained carambola-like CoWO4 microsphere with preferred crystal planes and oxygen vacancies delivers high specific capacity (493.7 C g−1/137.1 mA h g−1 at 1 A g−1) with superior rate capability (148.6 C g−1/41.3 mA h g−1 at 15 A g−1). Moreover, the cycling-induced morphology evolution lead to unconventional capacity increasing during cycling. The as-fabricated A-CoWO4//6 M KOH//activated carbon (AC) BSH device exhibits a maximum energy density of 27.5 Wh kg−1 at 1031.4 W kg−1 and 95.7% capacity retention after 12000 cycles. This work provides a possible way to improve the electrochemical performances of other metal oxide electrodes with low-capacity and irreversibility.

Abstract:Defects in nanomaterials have been widely used to introduce new properties of pristine materials for electrochemical energy storage. However, most of the research has focused on the effect of single defect while ignoring the synergy of multifold defects on enhancing electrochemical performance. Herein, we have modeled bulk phase oxygen substitution and surface oxygen vacancy on ZnCo 2 O 4 nanowires grown on nickel foam for the first time (F-ZnCo 2 O 4-x ), revealing the role of double defects and providing new insights into the effects of electrochemical properties. The enhanced oxygen vacancy concentration and increased active sites enable rapid and sufficient redox reaction of the active components. Therefore, the representative F-ZnCo 2 O 4-x electrode achieves a high specific capacity of 664 mAh·g −1 at 1 A·g −1 . Moreover, high energy density (E HSC , 60 Wh·kg −1 ) and good cycle stability (90.44% capacity retention after 10000 cycles) could be provided as a battery-type electrode of hybrid supercapacitor. The electrodes also have high energy density (E cell , 692 Wh·kg −1 ) and good durability (capacity retention of 98.8% after 2000 cycles) when used as zinc ion batteries. This work supplies a new avenue on the universality of defect engineering to design bimetallic oxide with high electrochemical performance.

Abstract:The superior electronic/ionic transport dynamics of electrode materials have been crucial to achieve appealing high performance for supercapacitors. Herein, a fascinating one-dimensional (1D) zinc cobalt hydroxide nanobelts/0D irregular manganese dioxide nanoparticles (M-ZCOH) have been vertically loaded into the 3D Ni foam (NF) substrate wrapped by nitrogen-doped graphene (NPG) (M-ZCOH/NPG/NF) for supercapacitors. The ingeniously designed M-ZCOH/NPG/NF composites feature powerful built-in electric field (BIEF) introduced by well-defined heterointerface with abundant oxygen vacancies defects. The formed electron accumulation triggering strong interfacial interaction verified by the differential charge density analysis may endow M-ZCOH/NPG/NF with the extra driving force to increase the diffusion/adsorption of electrolyte ions, thereby facilitating electron/ion transfer kinetics. Also, the qualitative negative shift of the d band center for M-ZCOH composites further evidences a lower electron/ion transfer barrier compared with the monomers. Obviously, the penetrating understanding of heterointerface on the improved properties is manifestly interpreted by combining theoretical and experimental analysis. Moreover, the ingenious strategy of engineering the heterointerfaces in unique heterostructure with rich defects may provide a new prospect for optimizing other advanced materials in sustainable energy storage systems.

Abstract:Transition metal oxides represent a promising category of pseudocapacitive materials for potassium-ion hybrid supercapacitors (PIHCs) characterized by high energy density. Nevertheless, their utility is hindered by intrinsic low conductivity, restricted electrochemical sites, and notable volume expansion, all of which directly contribute to the degradation of their electrochemical performance, thereby limiting their practical applicability in supercapacitor systems. In this study, we present a facile synthesis approach to fabricate nitrogen-doped carbon-supported oxygen vacancy-rich Co2NiO4 nanoflowers (Ov-Co2NiO4/NC NFs) featuring tunable surface layering and electron distribution. The nanoflower structure augments the contact area between the material and the electrolyte. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal oxygen vacancies could bring an enhanced charge density across the entire Fermi level in Co2NiO4 and expand the interatomic distances between adjacent cobalt and nickel atoms to 3.370 Å. N-doped carbon carriers further accelerate charge transfer, increase the electrostatic energy storage and inhibit the structural collapse of Co2NiO4. These structural modifications serve to improve electrochemical reaction kinetics, augment the binding energy of K+ (-2.87 eV), and mitigate structural variations during K+ storage. In a 6 M KOH electrolyte, Ov-Co2NiO4/NC NF exhibits a specific capacitance of 1104 F g-1 at a current density of 0.5 A g-1, with a remarkable capacitance retention rate of 91.48 % after 6500 cycles. Furthermore, the assembled PIHCs demonstrate an energy density of 47.8 Wh kg-1 and an ultra-high power density of 376 W kg-1, alongside notable cycle stability, retaining 90.13 % of its capacitance after 8000 cycles in a 6 M KOH electrolyte.
