Abstract:Ho3+/Yb3+/Tm3+ codoped 12CaO.7Al(2)O(3) (C12A7) polycrystals exhibiting upconversion white-light under 980 nm excitation have been successfully synthesized by high temperature solid-state reaction method. An orthogonal experiment is designed for finding out the effects of the rare earth ions concentrations on the intensity of white light. In order to realize the generating of white-light, the feasible solution is to increase the concentration of Ho3+ and decrease the Tm3+ concentration. CIE coordinate of C12A7:0.5 mol% Ho3+/4.0 mol% Yb3+/0.7 mol%Tm3+- sample at 980 nm excitation under 800 mW is (0.32, 0.34), which is very close to the white emission center (0.33, 0.33). As the pump powers increasing, the tendency of color coordinates is toward the blue region. The pump dependence suggests that the blue upconversion emissions are populated by a three-photon process, the green emissions are a two-photon process, the red emissions are a combination of two and three photons processes. Studies on the upconversion mechanism show that the blue and green emissions are attributed to Tm(3+:1)G(4).H-3(6) and Ho3+:5F4/S-5(2).I-5(8), respectively. The red emissions include two parts: Tm3+:1 G(4) .F-3(4) and Ho3+:5F5.I-5(8).

The upconversion emission spectra suggest that the green upconversion emission centered at 548 nm and the red upconversion emission at 662 nm correspond to the 5F4/5S2→5I8 and 5F5→5I8 transition of Ho3+ ions, respectively. The intensity of the upconversion luminescence and the ratio of red to green are changed with Yb3+ ion concentration. The pump dependence and luminescence decay dynamics spectra show the green and red upconversion emissions are populated by a two-photon process, and the upconversion mechanisms are analyzed. The relative luminous efficiencies of green and red emissions are 2.035% and 0.7%, respectively. The normalized efficiency obtained for green emission of Ho3+ at RT when the sample is excited by 980-nm light with an absorbed intensity of 7.5 W/cm2 is 0.27 cm2/W. This result is comparable to the values obtained in YF3 for the Yb3+, Er3+ green emission. The C12A7 with upconversion red and green light will be a promising luminous material.

Abstract:Er3+ doped Yb3Al5O12 powder has been prepared by chemical combustion and their structural and optical properties are determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and up-conversion (UC) spectra. XRD and TEM show that the powder is composed of a highly crystalline garnet phase. When excited by a 980nm laser diode, the Er3+ doped Yb3Al5O12 powder shows an intense red UC fluorescent band that can be assigned to the transition 4F9/2→4I15/2 of Er3+ and a relatively weak green one corresponding to 2H11/2/4S3/2→4I15/2 in the UC spectra. The intensity ratio of the red to green emission is enhanced due to Li+ incorporation. This can be attributed to the modification of local crystal fields around the rare-earth ions. Our results suggest that rare-earth doped alumina nanomaterials have potential applications in flat-panel displays and multicolor fluorescent labels.
Upconversion luminescence properties and optical thermometry based on non-thermal coupling levels of Ho3+, Yb3+, and Tm3+ codoped 12CaO·7Al2O3 single crystals

Abstract:Compared with the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) temperature measurement technology based on the thermal coupling levels (TCLs) of rare earth (RE) ions, non-TCL (NTCL) FIR technology can greatly improve temperature measurement sensitivity because it is not limited by Boltzmann distribution. In this paper, a H o 3+/Y b 3+/T m 3+ co-doped 12C a O⋅7A l 2 O 3 (C12A7) single crystal was grown by the Czochralski method. As the temperature increased from 363 K to 523 K, the upconversion luminescence color of the H o 3+/Y b 3+/T m 3+/C12A7 crystal changed from white to yellow, and exhibited a large temperature dependence under 980 nm excitation. In the temperature range of 363-523 K, the FIR temperature measurement based on different NTCLs exhibited high temperature sensitivity; the maximum absolute sensitivity and relative sensitivity values were 0.0207K -1 and 2.82% K -1, respectively, which are higher than those previously reported based on TCLs of H o 3+ and T m 3+. This provides a strategy to achieve accurate sensitivity of FIR technology. The RE ion doped C12A7 single crystal material has good research and application prospects in the field of temperature sensing and optoelectronics.
Upconversion color tunability and white light generation in Yb3+/Er3+/Tm3+ tri-doped CaF2 single crystals

Abstract:Yb3+/Er3+/Tm3+ tri-doped CaF2 single crystals have been successfully synthesized via Temperature Gradient Technique (TGT) method, and represented by X-ray diffraction (XRD) examination, absorption and fluorescence spectrum, pump power dependence and lifetime analysis in details. Under the excitation of 980 nm laser diode (LD), the upconversion luminescence (UCL) spectra of Yb3+/Er3+/Tm3+/CaF2 as a function of Tm3+ concentration are made up of intense blue (Tm3+:1G4 → 3H6), green (Er3+: 4S3/2, 2H11/2 → 4I15/2), and red (Er3+:4F9/2 → 4I15/2) emissions, which are located at 478, 523, 539 and 656 nm, respectively. With increasing concentration of Tm, the color can be tunable from orange-yellow, white to blue light. And the optimal Yb3+/Er3+/Tm3+ doping concentrations for white light are determined to be 10%Yb, 0.1%Er and 0.05%Tm. The research indicates that the as-prepared materials may have potential applications in the fields of three dimensional displays, back lighting, white light sources, and so on.

Abstract:Yb3+/Tb3+/Er3+-doped transparent alkaline earth fluorosilicate glass ceramics containing SrF2 nanocrystals were prepared and their microstructures and spectroscopic properties were investigated. The formation of SrF2 nanocrystals enriched with Yb3+/Tb3+/Er3+ in the glass ceramics was confirmed by XRD, HRTEM and SAED. The glass ceramics exhibited intense upconversion luminescence behaviors, owing to efficient energy transfers from Yb3+ to Er3+ and Tb3+ and low phonon assistant non-radiative transition probabilities of excited Er3+ and Tb3+. The upconversion could be enhanced significantly by increasing the annealing temperature and the luminescence color could be adjusted by varying the Yb3+/Tb3+/Er3+ ratio. Upconversion of Er3+ could be described as sequential energy transfer from single Yb3+ to single Er3+, while upconversion of Tb3+ described as cooperative energy transfer from double Yb3+ to single Tb3+.

Abstract:Tm3+/Ho3+/Yb3+ triply doped aluminum germanate glasses exhibiting multicolor upconversion fluorescences have been fabricated and characterized. Efficient three-photon blue upconversion emission of Tm3+ and two-photon green and red upconversion fluorescences of Ho3+ have been observed. The strong red emission of Ho3+, which is more than eight times higher than that of the green emission, is desirable in achieving high color rendering index. By varying the excitation power of the 974nm wavelength laser diode, a series of white fluorescences with a large range of correlated color temperature (CCT) was obtained, and the fluorescence colors can be tuned from yellowish white to warm white, pure white, cool white, and bluish white with different CCT. The upconversion color tunability via pump power adjustment will promote the development of three-dimensional solid-state displays and upconversion illumination devices.

Abstract:A spectroscopic investigation of Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped 50SiO(2)-20Al(2)O(3)-30CaF(2) glasses and transparent glass ceramics containing CaF2 nanocrystals is presented. The formation of CaF2 nanocrystals in the glass ceramic was confirmed by x-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The Judd-Ofelt parameters of the Er3+ ions in the glass and glass ceramic have been calculated; they suggested that Er3+ ions had been incorporated into CaF2 nanocrystals in the glass ceramics. The upconversion luminescence intensity of the Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped glass ceramic was much stronger than that of the Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped glass. The upconversion luminescence mechanism has been ascribed to a two-photon absorption process for the green and red luminescence and a three-photon absorption process for the blue luminescence.

Abstract:A thorough study for thermodynamics characters and optical properties of pure 12CaO center dot 7Al(2)O(3) (C12A7) prepared under "argon" (Ar) and Cr3+/Ho3+ co-doped C12A7 (C12A7-Cr3+/Ho3+) derivatives have been made by using XRD, DSC/TG, Raman spectra and fluorescence spectrophotometer analysis, respectively. The precursor powders were calcined from 298 K to 1473 K under Ar atmosphere for studying their thermodynamics behaviors after co-precipitation. The relative chemical reactions for C12A7 were confirmed and determined by XRD, DSC/TG, Raman, FTIR and EDX analysis. Activation energies of crystal growth and extraction of free "O2-" for C12A7 polycrystals sintered under Ar atmosphere were measured to be (687/666) and (230/208) kJ/mol according to Ozawa/Kissinger methods, respectively. Crystallization parameters of pure C12A7 polycrystals in "Ar" gas were evaluated to be m = 3 and n = 3 with a 3D growth mechanism of constant nuclei. Visible up-conversion emissions at 470 nm and 540 nm were observed from C12A7-Cr3+/Ho3+ powders under 808 nm Xe lamp excitation. We proposed four relaxations and cooperative transformation mechanisms of Cr3+/Ho3+ to explain those up-conversion processes, which are one for 470 nm and three for 540 nm light respectively. Abstract:Ho3+/Yb3+/Tm3+ tridoped LiNbO3 single crystal exhibiting intense upconversion white light under 980 nm excitation has been successfully fabricated by the Czochralski method. The tridoped LiNbO3 single crystal offers power dependent color tuning properties by simply changing excitation power. Efficient three-photon blue upconversion emission and two-photon green and red upconversion emissions have been observed. In addition, the red emission of Ho3+ originates dominantly from the nonradiative decay of green emission. The LiNbO3 with upconversion white light will be a potential laser candidate material.

Abstract:Y2O3: 5%Yb3+, 0.5%Tm3+, z%Ho3+ (z = 0, 0.1, 0.5, 1.0) upconversion luminescent materials were synthesized by CO2 laser zone melting method. The upconversion luminescence (UCL) spectra of the samples were recorded with the excitation of 980 nm laser, and the energy transfer processes among doped rare earth (RE) ions were analyzed. The introduction of Ho3+ ions into Y2O3: 5%Yb3+, 0.5%Tm3+ gave the samples four distinct UCL bands, including blue, green, red, and infrared emission bands. The temperature sensing characteristics based on the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) of non-thermally coupled levels (NTCLs) of Tm3+ and Ho3+ ions were studied, and the derived maximum relative sensitivity (SR) reached impressive value of 0.0138 K-1 (298 K). Compared to the materials doped with single emission center of either Tm3+ or Ho3+ ions, the luminescent material co-doped with both Tm3+ and Ho3+ ions exhibited higher sensitivity while maintaining a wide temperature measurement range. The research results indicate that Y2O3: Yb3+, Tm3+, Ho3+ upconversion phosphor promises broad application prospects in optical temperature measurement.
Tunable multicolor and white-light upconversion luminescence in Yb3+/Tm3+/Ho3+ tri-doped NaYF4 micro-crystals

Abstract:NaYF4 micro-crystals with various concentrations of Yb(3+) /Tm(3+) /Ho(3+) were prepared successfully via a simple and reproducible hydrothermal route using EDTA as the chelating agent. Their phase structure and surface morphology were studied using powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The XRD patterns revealed that all the samples were pure hexagonal phase NaYF4. SEM images showed that Yb(3+)/Tm(3+)/Ho(3+) tri-doped NaYF4 were hexagonal micro-prisms. Upconversion photoluminescence spectra of Yb(3+)/Tm(3+)/Ho(3+) tri-doped NaYF4 micro-crystals with various dopant concentrations under 980 nm excitation with a 665 mW pump power were studied. Tunable multicolor (purple, purplish blue, yellowish green, green) and white light were achieved by simply adjusting the Ho(3+) concentration in 20%Yb(3+)/1%Tm(3+)/xHo(3+) tri-doped NaYF4 micro-crystals. Furthermore, white-light emissions could be obtained using different pump powers in 20%Yb(3+)/1%Tm(3+)/1%Ho(3+) tri-doped NaYF4 micro-crystals at 980 nm excitation. The pump power-dependent intensity relationship was studied and relevant energy transfer processes were discussed in detail. The results suggest that Yb(3+)/Tm(3+) Ho(3+) tri-doped NaYF4 micro-crystals have potential applications in optoelectronic devices such as photovoltaic, plasma display panel and white-light-emitting diodes.

Abstract:Ho3+/Yb3+/Tm3+ codoped LiNbO3 polycrystals exhibiting upconversion white-light under 980nm excitation have been successfully fabricated by the high temperature solid-state reaction method. The luminescent decay dynamics are studied, and rate equations for the blue, green, and red emissions are set up to analyze the upconversion luminescence mechanism. The present results demonstrate that the competition between the linear decay and the upconversion process for the depletion of the intermediate excited states plays an important role in upconversion mechanism. The LiNbO3 with upconversion white-light will be a promising luminous material.

Abstract:A series of Ca0.5Gd(WO4)2: Ho3+/Yb3+/Bi3+ phosphors prepared by solid-state reaction method were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy disperse spectroscopy (EDS), elemental mapping, upconversion (UC) spectroscopy and decay time analysis. Under 980 nm excitation, four up-converted emission bands of Ho3+ were observed in all samples. The concentration quenching effect of the UC emission appears by changing the concentration of Ho3+ in Ca0.5Gd(WO4)2: x mol% Ho3+, 40 mol% Yb3+ and Yb3+ in Ca0.5Gd(WO4)2: 1 mol% Ho3+, y mol% Yb3+, and the optimal concentration of Ho3+ and Yb3+ were determined to be 1 and 40 mol%, respectively. Compared to Bi3+-absent sample, the upconversion luminescence (UCL) intensities of green emission (540 nm) and red emission (644 nm) in Ca0.5Gd(WO4)2: 1 mol% Ho3+, 40 mol% Yb3+ via 15 mol% Bi3+ doping were increased by 2.5 and 3.6 times, respectively. The involved UCL mechanism based on the power dependent UC emission spectra were analyzed in detail. Additionally, the temperature sensing performances based on non-thermally coupled levels (NTCLs) 5F4(5S2) → 5I8, and 5F5 → 5I8 of Ho3+ ions and thermal quenching properties of the samples were also investigated in the range of 298–573 K. The maximum relative sensitivity (SR) of Ca0.5Gd(WO4)2: 1 mol% Ho3+, 40 mol% Yb3+ and Ca0.5Gd(WO4)2: 1 mol% Ho3+, 40 mol% Yb3+, 15mol% Bi3+ reached 0.0094 K-1 and 0.0112 K−1 at 298 K, respectively. The results indicated that doping Bi3+ ions can enhance the UCL intensity and optical temperature sensing of Ca0.5Gd(WO4)2: Ho3+/Yb3+.

Abstract:The melt quenching and subsequent controlled crystallization method was used to prepare Yb3+/Ho3+/Tm3+ triple-doped Ca5(PO4)3F glass ceramics (GCs), and the structural, optical property, luminescence and temperature sensitivity characteristics were characterized by structural and spectral analysis. The results show that Ca5(PO4)3F nanoparticles are precipitated in the precursor glass (PG). GC820 sample exhibits Sr−max=1.91% K−1 and Sa−max=0.475‰ K−1 based on thermally coupled emitting state. Meanwhile, according to the non-thermally coupled emitting state, the GC820 specimen displays Sr−max=1.23% K−1 and Sa−max=5.94% K−1. This finding indicates that Ca5(PO4)3F: Yb3+, Ho3+, and Tm3+ GCs are promising materials for optical thermometry.

White upconversion emission in CaHfO3 with codoping of Er3+, Ho3+, and Tm3+

Abstract:We investigated the upconversion luminescence (UCL) properties of CaHfO3 co-doped with Er3+, Ho3+, Tm3+, and Yb3+ to realize white UCL. We first verified that the UCL spectra of Tm3+/Yb3+ co-doped CaHfO3 (Yb3+ functioning as a sensitizer) showed a weak blue emission at 470 nm. It was assigned to the transition 1G4 → 3H6 that occurs via three photon absorption. We combined the blue UCL in Tm3+ with the green and red UCL in Er3+ and Ho3+ in a triply doped CaHfO3. It was observed that the blue UCL of Tm3+ was rather weak to generate a white UCL with the aid of Er3+ and Ho3+. In addition, double-doping with Tm3+ and Ho3+ was optimal for white UCL in CaHfO3. We examined the UCL properties of Tm3+/Ho3+ co-doped CaHfO3 in terms of their dependence on temperature and the concentration of Tm3+. We also discussed the feasibility of realizing white UCL in CaHfO3.

Abstract:CaLaAlO4/LaAlO3: 0.5%Tm3+, xYb3+ upconversion phosphors were prepared via the combustion method. The Tm3+ dopant concentration was constant (Tm=0.5mol%), while the concentration of Yb3+ co-dopant was varied (Yb = 1 – 10 mol%). The X-ray diffraction studies indicated a mixture of phases (tetragonal and hexagonal of CaLaAlO4 and LaAlO3 respectively). The optical absorption spectra of the upconversion phosphors have two absorption bands centered at 253 nm, and another band at 440 nm. The band at 253 nm is ascribed to the charge transfer band (CTB) between the ligand (O2-) and Yb3+ ions, while the broad band located at 440 nm was related to defect states in the lattice. The energy bandgap and refractive index of the optimized phosphor were 4.73 eV and 1.76 respectively. The upconversion emission peaks centered at 478 nm (1G4 → 3H6), 654 nm (1G4 → 3F4), and 801 nm (3H4 → 3H6) are associated to the electronic transitions of Tm3+ ions. As the Yb concentration increases, the colour emission is tuned from bluish white to blue light. The CCT and CIE coordinate of (0.2419, 0.2463) showed that the phosphor doped with 10 mol% of Yb3+ produces a bluish-white and its colour purity was 80%. Thus, the strong bluish-white light emission produced by the CaLaAlO4/LaAlO3: 0.5%Tm3+, xYb3+ phosphors could be used for solid-state lighting (SSL) or in multicolour displays.

Abstract:In this paper, Ho$$^{3+}$$/Tm$$^{3+}$$/Yb$$^{3+}$$-doped NaGd(MO$$_{4})_{2}$$ phosphors were prepared using the hydrothermal method and the effect of Yb$$^{3+}$$ doping amount on the luminescence properties of these phosphor materials was investigated. NaGd(MO$$_{4})_{2}$$ was characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and spectral analysis. The results showed that Ho$$^{3+}$$/Tm$$^{3+}$$/Yb$$^{3+}$$-doped NaGd(MO$$_{4})_{2}$$ has tetragonal phase structures, and doping with rare-earth ions decreases the cell parameters of NaGd(MO$$_{4})_{2}$$. NaGd(MO$$_{4})_{2}$$:Ho$$^{3}$$/Tm$$^{3+}$$/Yb$$^{3+}$$ generates blue, green, and red lights at 477, 545, and 659 nm, respectively, under an excitation of 980 nm. The emission of these three lights is called a three-photon process. As the doping ratio of Yb$$^{3+}$$ increases, the colour coordinates of samples gradually approach the white region from the red region, enabling NaGd(MO$$_{4})_{2}$$:0.1Ho/1Tm/20Yb to exhibit white emission. Doping with Yb$$^{3 + }$$ increases the energy transfer and quantum efficiencies of NaGd(MO$$_{4})_{2}$$. When the concentration of Yb$$^{3+}$$ reached 30%, the quantum efficiency of NaGd(MO$$_{4})_{2}$$ reached the maximum value of 188.37%. Overall, NaGd(MO$$_{4})_{2}$$:Ho/Tm/Yb has broad application prospects in the field of white lighting.
