What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper aims to address the issues encountered in tumor radiotherapy, particularly the problem of radioresistance caused by hypoxia and glutathione (GSH) overexpression in the tumor microenvironment (TME). Specifically, the paper proposes a multifunctional nanoplatfrom based on manganese ferrite (MnFe2O4), functionalized with polyethylene glycol (PEG) to enhance the efficacy of tumor radiotherapy. This nanoplatfrom can catalyze the decomposition of endogenous hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to produce oxygen, thereby alleviating tumor hypoxia, and consume GSH to reduce the loss of reactive oxygen species (ROS), thus improving therapeutic outcomes at both cellular and animal levels. Additionally, MnFe2O4-PEG can serve as T1 and T2 weighted contrast agents for tumor-specific magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), enabling precise and effective image-guided tumor therapy. The goal of the paper is to develop a systemically administered radiosensitizer that can selectively accumulate at the tumor site, alleviate hypoxia, and reduce GSH levels, combined with dual-modal magnetic resonance imaging technology to achieve precise and effective image-guided tumor therapy.
