Abstract: Rapid progress in nanofabrication techniques has enabled many novel optical characteristics for metasurfaces. However, the research of nonlinear plasmonic metasurfaces is still rather superficial, due to the lack of a clear physical picture to depict their working mechanisms. Here we provide a comprehensive theoretical study on the properties of nonlinear plasmon-assisted MoS$_2$ hybrid metasurfaces that originate from the bound states in the continuum (BICs), from the perspective of both classical and quantum approaches. New mechanisms to identify and create the trapped resonances that fueled by BICs are elaborated. By exploiting the sharp resonances of light-capturing modes, we demonstrate that the optical nonlinearity can be significantly boosted and smartly tuned. Utilizing both the plasmon-polariton resonance and plasmonic quasi-BICs, ultra-high nonlinear susceptibilities at different wavelength windows can be obtained at the same time. This wavelength-multiplexed nonlinear metasurfaces have many potential applications in frequency metrology, timing characterization, quantum information, etc, where multiple color signals need to be nonlinearly processed simultaneously. This work will also raise deeper exploration and lead new directions for experimental plasmonic BICs.

Abstract:Molecular plasmonics, the area which deals with the interactions between surface plasmons and molecules, has received enormous interest in fundamental research and found numerous technological applications. Plasmonic metamaterials, which offer rich opportunities to control the light intensity, field polarization, and local density of electromagnetic states on subwavelength scales, provide a versatile platform to enhance and tune light-molecule interactions. A variety of applications, including spontaneous emission enhancement, optical modulation, optical sensing, and photoactuated nanochemistry, have been reported by exploiting molecular interactions with plasmonic metamaterials. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive overview of the developments of molecular plasmonics with metamaterials. After a brief introduction to the optical properties of plasmonic metamaterials and relevant fabrication approaches, we discuss light-molecule interactions in plasmonic metamaterials in both weak and strong coupling regimes. We then highlight the exploitation of molecules in metamaterials for applications ranging from emission control and optical modulation to optical sensing. The role of hot carriers generated in metamaterials for nanochemistry is also discussed. Perspectives on the future development of molecular plasmonics with metamaterials conclude the review. The use of molecules in combination with designer metamaterials provides a rich playground both to actively control metamaterials using molecular interactions and, in turn, to use metamaterials to control molecular processes.
Time-stretched quantum spectroscopy of midinfrared plasmonic nanostructures

Abstract:Plasmonic nanostructures offer a prominent foundation for plasmon sensing owing to their capacity to confine light within nanoscale regions and enhance the intensity of the local electromagnetic field. Nevertheless, the development of plasmonic sensors that operate in the midinfrared (MIR) region still presents a notable obstacle, primarily due to the limited detection sensitivity of commercial MIR detectors. To break this bottleneck, we demonstrate the characterization of the plasmonic nanostructures' MIR spectral response using a time-stretched quantum spectroscopy with frequency upconversion. Quantum spectroscopy of correlated photon pairs offers a novel approach to overcome the limitations associated with the detection sensitivity of localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs), particularly under conditions of excessive noise. This scheme not only extends the application of quantum spectroscopy for the plasmonic nanostructures to the MIR regions, but also circumvents the necessity of employing various types of MIR detectors. In addition, by wavelength-to-time mapping and using a single-pixel detector to obtain the MIR spectral response of a plasmonic sample, nonlocal time stretching significantly increases system stability and efficiently reduces the measurement time under a low-light-level illumination. With an integration time of 600 s, time-stretched quantum spectroscopy demonstrates a detection sensitivity of 0.22 photons per pulse. Abstract:Abstract Illumination of noble metal nanostructures by electromagnetic radiation induces coherent oscillations of conductive electrons on their surfaces. These coherent oscillations of electrons, also known as localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPR), are the underlying physical cause of the electromagnetic enhancement of Raman scattering from analytes located in a close proximity to the metal surface. This physical phenomenon is broadly known as surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). LSPR can decay via direct interband, phonon-assisted intraband, and geometry-assisted transitions forming hot carriers, highly energetic species that are responsible for a large variety of chemical transformations. This review critically discusses the most recent progress in mechanistic elucidation of hot carrier-driven chemistry and catalytic processes at the nanoscale. The review provides a brief description of tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS), modern analytical technique that possesses single-molecule sensitivity and angstrom spatial resolution, showing the advantage of this technique for spatiotemporal characterization of plasmon-driven reactions. The review also discusses experimental and theoretical findings that reported novel plasmon-driven reactivity which can be used to catalyze redox, coupling, elimination and scissoring reactions. Lastly, the review discusses the impact of the most recently reported findings on both plasmonic catalysis and TERS imaging.

Abstract:Absorption spectroscopy of fundamental ro-vibrational transitions in the mid-infrared region provides a powerful tool for studying the structure and dynamics of molecules in the gas phase and for sensitive and quantitative gas sensing. Laser frequency combs permit novel approaches to perform broadband molecular spectroscopy. Multiplex dual-comb spectroscopy without moving parts can achieve particularly high speed, sensitivity and resolution. However, achieving Doppler-limited resolution in the mid-infrared still requires overcoming instrumental challenges. Here we demonstrate a new approach based on difference-frequency generation of frequency-agile near-infrared frequency combs that are produced using electro-optic modulators. The combs have a remarkably flat intensity distribution, and their positions and line spacings can be freely selected by simply dialing a knob. Using the proposed technique, we record, in the 3-μm region, Doppler-limited absorption spectra with resolved comb lines within milliseconds, and precise molecular line parameters are retrieved. Our technique holds promise for fast and sensitive time-resolved studies of, for example, trace gases.

The enhanced electric field around the nanostructures due to LSPR will significantly enhance the Raman scattering, fluorescence and IR spectra, which enable the realization of single molecule detection. In addition, the LSPR will excite high-energy electron-hole pair (referred to as “hot electrons” and “hot holes”) emerging on metal surface. The energetic charges will considerably affect the electrochemical reactions occurring at the nanoparticles. When the plasmonic metallic nanostructures are coupled to other substrates, for example, the semiconductor (i.e., TiO2, MoS2), the plasmon-excited hot electron-hole at nanoparticle surface can communicate with the conductance and valence bands of the semiconductors, resulting in variation in electro/photocatalytic activity. Abstract:Metal-dielectric micro/nano-composites have surface plasmon resonances in visible and near-infrared domains. Excitation of coupled metal-dielectric resonances is also important. These different resonances can allow enhancement of the electromagnetic field at a subwavelength scale. Hybrid plasmonic structures act as optical antennae by concentrating large electromagnetic energy in micro- and nano-scales. Plasmonic structures are proposed for various applications such as optical filters, investigation of quantum electrodynamics effects, solar energy concentration, magnetic recording, nanolasing, medical imaging and biodetection, surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), and optical super-resolution microscopy. We present the review of recent achievements in experimental and theoretical studies of metal-dielectric micro and nano antennae that are important for fundamental and applied research. The main impact is application of metal-dielectric optical antennae for the efficient SERS sensing.

Abstract:Plasmon coupling is an essential strategy to realize strong local electromagnetic (EM) field which is crucial for high-performance plasmonic devices. In this work, multiple plasmon couplings are demonstrated in three-dimensional (3D) hybrid plasmonic systems composed of polydimethylsiloxane-supported ordered silver nanocone (AgNC) arrays decorated with high-density gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) which are fabricated by a template-assisted physical vapor deposition process. Strong interparticle coupling, particle-film coupling, inter-cone coupling, and particle-cone coupling are revealed by numerical simulations in such composite nanostructures, which produce intense and high-density EM hot spots, boosting highly sensitive and reproducible surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection with an enhancement factor of ∼ 1.74 × 108. Furthermore, a linear correlation between logarithmic Raman intensity and logarithmic concentration of probe molecules is observed in a large concentration range. These results offer new ideas to develop novel plasmonic devices, and provide alternative strategy to realize flexible and high-performance SERS sensors for trace molecule detection and quantitative analysis.

Broadband Cavity-Enhanced Kerr Comb Spectroscopy on Chip

Abstract:The broad and equidistant spectrum of frequency combs has had a profound impact on spectroscopic studies. Particularly, experiments involving the coupling of frequency combs to cavities have already enabled unprecedented broadband and sensitive spectroscopy on a single-molecule level. The emergence of integrated, compact and broadband Kerr-microcombs holds promise to bring many metrological and spectroscopic studies outside of the lab. However, performing cavity-enhanced direct frequency comb spectroscopy on-chip has remained a challenge. Here, we couple a microcomb source with a microcavity to extend the advantages of cavity-enhanced spectroscopy to photonically integrated circuits. By harnessing the coherent nature of the Kerr-comb and high-Q microcavity enhancement, we obtain a detailed dispersion landscape of the guided-wave mode and comprehensive frequency-dependent cavity lineshapes. Our microcomb-cavity coupling can facilitate photonically integrated cavity-enhanced biochemical spectroscopy by evanescently coupling analytes to the cavity's guided mode, a mode of operation we analyze and provide guidelines for. Demonstrated detailed dispersion measurements, overperforming state-of-the-art table-top tunable lasers in available bandwidth, show potential for integrated nonlinear optics applications, as precise dispersion management is crucial for such processes. Our chip-scale comb-cavity coupled platform suggests an integrated, broadband, cost-effective and accurate tool for the nonlinear optics studies as well as for ultra-compact bio- and chemical- sensing platform.

Abstract:In recent years, the biosensor research community has made rapid progress in the development of nanostructured materials capable of amplifying the interaction between light and biological matter. A common objective is to concentrate the electromagnetic energy associated with light into nanometer-scale volumes that, in many cases, can extend below the conventional Abbé diffraction limit. Dating back to the first application of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) for label-free detection of biomolecular interactions, resonant optical structures, including waveguides, ring resonators, and photonic crystals, have proven to be effective conduits for a wide range of optical enhancement effects that include enhanced excitation of photon emitters (such as quantum dots, organic dyes, and fluorescent proteins), enhanced extraction from photon emitters, enhanced optical absorption, and enhanced optical scattering (such as from Raman-scatterers and nanoparticles). The application of photonic metamaterials as a means for enhancing contrast in microscopy is a recent technological development. Through their ability to generate surface-localized and resonantly enhanced electromagnetic fields, photonic metamaterials are an effective surface for magnifying absorption, photon emission, and scattering associated with biological materials while an imaging system records spatial and temporal patterns. By replacing the conventional glass microscope slide with a photonic metamaterial, new forms of contrast and enhanced signal-to-noise are obtained for applications that include cancer diagnostics, infectious disease diagnostics, cell membrane imaging, biomolecular interaction analysis, and drug discovery. This paper will review the current state of the art in which photonic metamaterial surfaces are utilized in the context of microscopy.

Abstract:Plasmonic nanocavities are able to engineer and confine electromagnetic fields to subwavelength volumes. In the past decade, they have enabled a large set of applications, in particular for sensing, optical trapping, and the investigation of physical and chemical phenomena at a few or single-molecule levels. This extreme sensitivity is possible thanks to the highly confined local field intensity enhancement, which depends on the geometry of plasmonic nanocavities. Indeed, suitably designed structures providing engineered local optical fields lead to enhanced optical sensing based on different phenomena such as surface enhanced Raman scattering, fluorescence, and Förster resonance energy transfer. In this mini-review, we illustrate the most recent results on plasmonic nanocavities, with specific emphasis on the detection of single molecules.
Detecting mid-infrared light by molecular frequency upconversion with dual-wavelength hybrid nanoantennas

Abstract:Coherent interconversion of signals between optical and mechanical domains is enabled by optomechanical interactions. Extreme light-matter coupling produced by confining light to nanoscale mode volumes can then access single mid-infrared (MIR) photon sensitivity. Here we utilise the infrared absorption and Raman activity of molecular vibrations in plasmonic nanocavities to demonstrate frequency upconversion. We convert {\lambda}~10 {\mu}m incoming light to visible via surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) in doubly-resonant antennas that enhance upconversion by >10^10. We show >200% amplification of the SERS antiStokes emission when a MIR pump is tuned to a molecular vibrational frequency, obtaining lowest detectable powers ~1 {\mu}W/{\mu}m^2 at room temperature. These results have potential for low-cost and large-scale infrared detectors and spectroscopic techniques, and bring single-molecule sensing into the infrared

Abstract:Light interaction with metal nanostructures exposes exciting phenomena such as strong amplification and localization of electromagnetic fields. In surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), the strong signal amplification is attributed to two fundamental mechanisms, electromagnetic and chemical enhancement (EM and CM, respectively). While the EM mechanism is accepted as the main responsible for signal amplification, a long-standing controversy on the CM mechanism's role still prevails. The CM contribution can be evidenced when compared to the nonenhanced (or bulk) Raman signal as a change in intensity ratios, peak shifts, or appearance of new Raman modes. However, it is also possible to induce similar spectral variations by changing the relative orientation between the electric field and molecule or when a high electric field gradient is achieved. Therefore, in this work, we show specific spectral changes in SERS affected by the molecular orientation, while changes in other modes can be attributed to chemical enhancement. On the basis of our experimental and quantum chemical results for cobalt phthalocyanine, we identify low-frequency Raman modes (LFMs) sensitive to charge-transfer compared to high-frequency modes (HFMs) that are rather sensitive to geometrical effects and temperature changes. These results provide new evidence on the role of molecule excitation/polarization that comes now as a more general and dominant effect than the chemical enhancement mechanism so far attributed to charge-transfer processes. These findings make it possible to engineer multifunctional Raman molecular probes with selective sensitivity to the local environment (HFMs) and charge-transfer processes (LFMs).
Selectively enhanced Raman/fluorescence spectra in photonic-plasmonic hybrid structures

Abstract:The manipulation of the interaction between molecules and photonic-plasmonic hybrid structures is critical for the application of surface-enhanced spectroscopy (SES). Herein, we report a study on the mode coupling mechanism and SES performance in a typical optoplasmonic system constructed with a polystyrene microsphere (PS MS) resonator and gold nanoparticles (Au NPs). The mode coupling mechanism was found to be closely dependent on the relative positions of PS MS, Au NPs, and molecules in the optoplasmonic system, based on which selectively enhanced Raman and fluorescence signals of molecules can be realized via the collaboration of enhancement and quenching channels of the PS MS and Au NPs. We demonstrate two arrangements of the photonic-plasmonic hybrid structure, which can support fluorescence signals with sharp whispering-gallery modes and apparently enhanced Raman signals with relatively low detection limits and good robustness, respectively.
Mid-infrared feed-forward dual-comb spectroscopy at 3 $μ$m

Abstract:Mid-infrared high-resolution spectroscopy has proven an invaluable tool for the study of the structure and dynamics of molecules in the gas phase. The advent of frequency combs advances the frontiers of precise molecular spectroscopy. Here we demonstrate, in the important 3-{\mu}m spectral region of the fundamental CH stretch in molecules, dual-comb spectroscopy with experimental coherence times between the combs that exceed half-an-hour. Mid-infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy using two frequency combs with self-calibration of the frequency scale, negligible contribution of the instrumental line-shape to the spectral profiles, high signal-to-noise ratio and broad spectral bandwidth opens up novel opportunities for precision spectroscopy of small molecules. Highly multiplexed metrology of line shapes may be envisioned.

Abstract:Nanostructures and nanomaterials, especially plasmonic nanostructures, often show optical properties that conventional materials lack and can manipulate light, as well as various light–matter interactions, in both their near-field and far-field regions with a high efficiency. Thanks to these unique properties, not only can they be used to enhance the sensitivity of chemical sensing and analysis techniques, but they also provide a solution for designing new sensing devices and simplifying the design of analytical instruments. The earliest applications of optical nanostructures are surface-enhanced spectroscopies. With the help of the resonance field enhancement of plasmonic nanostructures, molecular signals, such as Raman, infrared absorption, and fluorescence can be significantly enhanced, and even single-molecule analysis can be realized. Moreover, the resonant field enhancements of plasmonic nanostructures are often associated with other effects, such as optical forces, resonance shifts, and photothermal effects. Using these properties, label-free plasmonic sensors, nano-optical tweezers, and plasmonic matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization have also been demonstrated in the past two decades. In the last few years, the research on optical nanostructures has gradually expanded to non-periodic 2D array structures, namely metasurfaces. With the help of metasurfaces, light can be arbitrarily manipulated, leading to many new possibilities for developing miniaturized integrated intelligent sensing and analysis systems. In this review, we discuss the applications of optical nanostructures in chemical sensing and analysis from both theoretical and practical aspects, aiming at a concise and unified framework for this field.
Plasmonic antennas and zero mode waveguides to enhance single molecule fluorescence detection and fluorescence correlation spectroscopy towards physiological concentrations

Abstract:Single-molecule approaches to biology offer a powerful new vision to elucidate the mechanisms that underpin the functioning of living cells. However, conventional optical single molecule spectroscopy techniques such as F\"orster fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) or fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) are limited by diffraction to the nanomolar concentration range, far below the physiological micromolar concentration range where most biological reaction occur. To breach the diffraction limit, zero mode waveguides and plasmonic antennas exploit the surface plasmon resonances to confine and enhance light down to the nanometre scale. The ability of plasmonics to achieve extreme light concentration unlocks an enormous potential to enhance fluorescence detection, FRET and FCS. Single molecule spectroscopy techniques greatly benefit from zero mode waveguides and plasmonic antennas to enter a new dimension of molecular concentration reaching physiological conditions. The application of nano-optics to biological problems with FRET and FCS is an emerging and exciting field, and is promising to reveal new insights on biological functions and dynamics.
Indirect nanoplasmonic sensing: ultrasensitive experimental platform for nanomaterials science and optical nanocalorimetry.

Abstract:Indirect nanoplasmonic sensing is a novel experimental platform for measurements of thermodynamics and kinetics in/on nanomaterials and thin films. It features simple experimental setup, high sensitivity, small sample amounts, high temporal resolution (<10(-3) s), operating conditions from UHV to high pressure, wide temperature range, and applicability to any nano- or thin film material. The method utilizes two-dimensional arrangements of nanoplasmonic Au sensor-nanoparticles coated with a thin dielectric spacer layer onto which the sample material is deposited. The measured signal is spectral shifts of the Au-sensor localized plasmons, induced by processes in/on the sample material. Here, the method is applied to three systems exhibiting nanosize effects, (i) the glass transition of confined polymers, (ii) catalytic light-off on Pd nanocatalysts, and (iii) thermodynamics and kinetics of hydrogen uptake/release in Pd nanoparticles <5 nm. In (i) and (iii), dielectric changes in the sample are detected, while (ii) demonstrates a novel optical nanocalorimetry method.

Ultrasensitive detection and characterization of molecules with infrared plasmonic metamaterials

Abstract:AbstractInfrared vibrational spectroscopy is an effective technique which enables the direct probe of molecular fingerprints and such detection can be further enhanced by the emerging engineered plasmonic metamaterials. Here we experimentally demonstrate ultrasensitive detection and characterization of polymer molecules based on an asymmetric infrared plasmonic metamaterial and quantitatively analyze the molecule detection sensitivity and molecule-structure interactions. A sharp, non-radiative Fano resonance supported by the plasmonic metamaterial exhibits strongly enhanced near-field and the resonance frequency is tailored to match the vibrational fingerprint of the target molecule. By utilizing the near-field nature of the plasmonic excitation, significantly enhanced absorption signal of molecules in the infrared spectroscopy are obtained, enabling ultrasensitive detection of only minute quantities of organic molecules. The enhancement of molecular absorption up to 105 fold is obtained and sensitive detection of molecules at zeptomole levels (corresponding to a few tens of molecules within a unit cell) is achieved with high signal-to-noise ratio in our experiment. The demonstrated infrared plasmonic metamaterial sensing platform offers great potential for improving the specificity and sensitivity of label-free, biochemical detection.
