Abstract:Nanocrystalline tungsten oxide doped titanium dioxide (WOx-TiO2) powders were prepared by TiCl4 hydrolysis and characterized by XRD, XPS, UV-Vis absorption spectra and TEM. Results showed that WO, not only hindered the growth of TiO2 particles but also greatly increased the transformation temperature (>800 degrees C) from anatase to rutile during sintering; the dominant fraction of tungsten oxides was non-stoichiometric tungsten oxide (WxOy) with Wn+ (4<n<6), which could easily substitute Ti4+ in the lattice of TiO2. The light absorption band of TiO2 changed from the near UV to the visible light range (2.68 eV in 1.0 %WOx-TiO2) because of the tungsten impurity energy level induced by WxTi1-xO2. The photocatalysis experiments demonstrated that the MB in aqueous solution was successfully degraded within 1h using WOx-TiO2 with an optimal WOx dosage of 1% under visible light irradiation.

Abstract:Catalyst design plays vital roles in structurally relevant reactions. Revealing the catalyst structure and chemistry in the reactive environment at the atomic scale is imperative for the rational design of catalysts as well as the investigation of reaction mechanisms, while in situ characterization at the atomic scale at high temperature is still a great challenge. Here, tracking intermetallic Co7W6 nanocrystals with a defined structure and a high melting point by environmental aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy in combination with in situ synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy, we directly present the structural and chemical stability of the Co7W6 nanocrystals in methane, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen at temperatures of 700-1100 °C. The evidence is in situ and in real time with both atomic scaled resolution and collective information. The results are helpful in revealing the mechanism of structural-specified synthesis of single-walled carbon nanotubes. This research offers an example of systematic investigation at the atomic scale on catalysts under reactive conditions. Such catalysts presenting high structural stability may also find applications in other structure-specific synthesis.

Abstract:The evolution of different W oxidation states and the oxide reduction mechanism of polycrystalline WO3 thin films, induced by low-energy H2 + bombardment at room temperature, was investigated in situ by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy around W 4f and O 1s core levels and the valence band. A hydrogen tungsten bronze is formed at the beginning of the reduction process, as is evident from the development of the W5+ oxidation state and the creation of the O–H bonds. With the higher H implantation dose, reduction proceeds with the creation of H2O gas molecules, whose evolution with the bombardment time correlates with the cumulative concentration fractions of W4+, W2+, and W0 oxidation states. The generation of H2O molecules removes O atoms from the WO3 matrix, inducing the reduction of WO3 to lower oxides and, subsequently, metallic W, which is the dominant phase on the surface after 180 min of bombardment.

Abstract:The transition zone is dominated by polymorphs of olivine, wadsleyite, and ringwoodite, which are to date considered the main water carriers in the Earth's mantle. Despite considerable studies on water solubility and its impact on physical properties of the two minerals, knowledge of their hydrogen defects and framework behavior at high temperature and high pressure is still lacking. Here, we systematically assess this issue, by in situ high-temperature (20-800 degrees C) infrared spectroscopic studies, in situ high-temperature (20-800 degrees C) and high temperature-pressure (14.27 and 18.84 GPa, 20-400 degrees C) Raman spectroscopic studies on the iron-bearing wadsleyite and ringwoodite. The results show that dehydrogenation in wadsleyite happens at a higher temperature than in ringwoodite. The infrared absorption patterns of hydrogen defects in wadsleyite and ringwoodite are temperature sensitive, resulting from hydrogen defects transfer and site-specific stabilities. As for the framework, it is more sensitive to temperature and pressure for ringwoodite than wadsleyite. These results provide new knowledge about hydrogen defects and framework of wadsleyite and ringwoodite at high temperature and high pressure, which is indispensable for understanding water solubility and its impacts on physical properties of these two minerals.
Proton polarons in HxWO3 by synchrotron photoemission and DFT modelling

Abstract:The measurement of hydrogen induced changes on the electronic structure of transition metal oxides by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy is a challenging endeavor, since the origin of the photoelectron cannot be unambiguously assigned to hydrogen. The H-induced electronic structure changes in tungsten trioxide have been known for more than 100 years, but are still being controversially debated. The controversy stems from the difficulty in disentangling effects due to hydrogenation from the effects of oxygen deficiencies. Using a membrane approach to X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, in combination with tuneable synchrotron radiation we measure simultaneously core levels and valence band up to a hydrogen pressure of 1000 mbar. Upon hydrogenation, the intensities of the W$^{5+}$ core level and a state close to the Fermi level increase following the pressure-composition isotherm curve of bulk H$_x$WO$_3$. Combining experimental data and density-functional theory the description of the hydrogen induced coloration by a proton polaron model is corroborated. Although hydrogen is the origin of the electronic structure changes near the Fermi edge, the valence band edge is now dominated by tungsten orbitals instead of oxygen as is the case for the pristine oxide having wider implication for its use as (photo-electrochemical) catalyst.

Abstract:Atomistic simulations using ab initio density functional theory and machine-learned potentials have been employed to map the structural, thermodynamic, and kinetic properties of the T-WO x system (x = 0 to 3). The simulations reveal that the T permeability is low in WO 2 , intermediate in W, and relatively high in WO 3 . Diffusion of T is slowest in WO 2 . Vacancies and self-interstitials are strong traps for T. Oxygen vacancies in WO 2 are very strong traps for a few T atoms, while vacancies in bulk W can trap up to ten T atoms. Segregation to WO 2 surfaces is energetically favourable. However, segregation of T to WO 3 surfaces is energetically unfavourable at high surface coverage.

Wurtzite-to-Rocksalt Structural Transformation in Nanocrystalline CoO

Abstract:Hexagonal CoO nanocrystals are coarsened under hydrothermal conditions to investigate the effect of particle size on phase transformation and stability property. Structural stability and phase transformation of the hexagonal CoO phase have been investigated by X-ray powder diffraction with Rietveld refinement, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray absorption fine structure, and differential scanning calorimeter. It is found that the hexagonal CoO phase is a metastable phase, which increases its grain size from 50 to 250 nm for refluxing times from 1 to 6 h at 200 degrees C. After 12 h, cubic-structured CoO grains with an average grain size of 20 nm are observed, which spread around big hexagonal CoO grains. After about 24 h, only the cubic CoO phase with an average grain size of 25 nm is detected. The onset temperature of hexagonal-to-cubic phase transformation in CoO is estimated to be 378 degrees C by DSC, using a heating rate of 20 deg/min. The results obtained indicate that the hexagonal-to-cubic phase transformation in nanocrystalline CoO is by nucleation and growth mechanism, starting from the surface to the center of the hexagonal grains.
Investigation of the Oxidation Behavior of Cr20Mn17Fe18Ta23W22 and Microdefects Evolution Induced by Hydrogen Ions before and after Oxidation

Abstract:The oxidation behavior of body-centered cubic (bcc) structure Cr20Mn17Fe18Ta23W22 refractory high-entropy alloy (RHEA) and the microdefects induced by hydrogen ions before and after oxidation were investigated. The results revealed that compared with oxidizing Cr20Mn17Fe18Ta23W22 at 800 °C (6.7 °C/min) for 4 h (ST3, Ar:O2 = 3:1), the heating procedure of oxidizing Cr20Mn17Fe18Ta23W22 at 300 °C (6 °C/min) for 2 h and then increased to 800 °C (5 °C/min) for 4 h is more conducive to the production of oxides without spalling on the surface, i.e., HT1 (Ar:O2 = 1:1), HT2 (Ar:O2 = 2:1) and HT3 (Ar:O2 = 3:1) samples. The oxidation of Cr20Mn17Fe18Ta23W22 RHEA is mainly controlled by the diffusion of cations instead of affinities with O. Additionally, HT1 and HT3 samples irradiated with a fluence of 3.9 × 1022 cm−2 hydrogen ions (60 eV) were found to have a better hydrogen irradiation resistance than Cr20Mn17Fe18Ta23W22 RHEA. The microdefects in irradiated Cr20Mn17Fe18Ta23W22 mainly existed as hydrogen bubbles, hydrogen-vacancy (H-V) complexes and vacancy/vacancy clusters. The microdefects in irradiated HT3 were mainly vacancies and H-V complexes, while the microdefects in irradiated HT1 mainly existed as vacancies and vacancy clusters, as large amounts of hydrogen were consumed to react with oxides on the HT1 surface. The oxides on the surface of the HT3 sample were more stable than those on HT1 under hydrogen irradiation.

Abstract:Controlling electronic population through chemical doping is one way to tip the balance between competing phases in materials with strong electronic correlations. Vanadium dioxide exhibits a first-order phase transition at around 338 K between a high temperature, tetragonal, metallic state (T) and a low temperature, monoclinic, insulating state (M1), driven by electron-electron and electron-lattice interactions. Intercalation of VO2 with atomic hydrogen has been demonstrated, with evidence that this doping suppresses the transition. However, the detailed effects of intercalated H on the crystal and electronic structure of the resulting hydride have not been previously reported. Here we present synchrotron and neutron diffraction studies of this material system, mapping out the structural phase diagram as a function of temperature and hydrogen content. In addition to the original T and M1 phases, we find two orthorhombic phases, O1 and O2, which are stabilized at higher hydrogen content. We present density functional calculations that confirm the metallicity of these states and discuss the physical basis by which hydrogen stabilizes conducting phases, in the context of the metal-insulator transition.

Abstract:Tungsten trioxide adopts a variety of structures which can be intercalated with charged species to alter the electronic properties, thus forming `tungsten bronzes'. Similar optical effects are observed upon removing oxygen from WO_3, although the electronic properties are slightly different. Here we present a computational study of cubic and hexagonal alkali bronzes and examine the effects on cell size and band structure as the size of the intercalated ion is increased. With the exception of hydrogen (which is predicted to be unstable as an intercalate), the behaviour of the bronzes are relatively consistent. NaWO_3 is the most stable of the cubic systems, although in the hexagonal system the larger ions are more stable. The band structures are identical, with the intercalated atom donating its single electron to the tungsten 5d valence band. Next, this was extended to a study of fractional doping in the Na_xWO_3 system (0 < x < 1). A linear variation in cell parameter, and a systematic change in the position of the Fermi level up into the valence band was observed with increasing x. In the underdoped WO_3-x system however, the Fermi level undergoes a sudden jump into the conduction band at around x = 0.2. Lastly, three compounds of a layered WO_4×a,wdiaminoalkane hybrid series were studied and found to be insulating, with features in the band structure similar to those of the parent WO_3 compound which relate well to experimental UV-visible spectroscopy results.

Abstract:We have studied the effect of the doped tungsten on the phase transition temperature and the optical properties between the monoclinic phase and the rutile phase of VO2 by performing first-principles calculations. It is found that the introduction of tungsten (W) significantly decreases the transition temperature between the rutile VO2 and the monoclinic VO2, with reducing the energy difference between the two phases. Meanwhile, our calculations indicate that the doped W lowers the infrared light transmittance of the monoclinic VO2, being consistent with the experimental observations. The nature about the reduction of the transition temperature and the change of the optical properties arising from the W dopants is revealed. Abstract:This paper focuses on the experimental observation of tungsten grain evolution during the process of hydrogen reduction of tungsten trioxide. The objective is to gain insights into the grain size distribution (GSD) evolution and morphology changes of metallic tungsten. The study employs an amalgamation of conventional characterization techniques —such as TGA, SEM-EDS, TEM and XRD— alongside cutting-edge techniques like phase contrast nano-tomography from synchrotron sources. Conducted as a quasi in-situ study, this research offers the opportunity to observe the transient evolution of the formed metallic tungsten phase within its precursor WO2 particles. The paper presents and discusses quantitative results concerning the evolution of GSD and morphological changes, encompassing growth rates of both crystallites and grains of the synthesized metallic phase. Additionally, the quasi in-situ study highlights the dependence of grain size on water concentration during the reduction process. The qualitative and quantitative findings contribute to a more nuanced understanding of the kinetics of grain growth of metallic tungsten and offer insights into the intricate interplay between reduction parameters, GSD evolution and morphological changes. Gaining a deeper understanding of the underlying mechanisms driving the changes in GSD establishes a foundation for predictive theory with immediate academic and industrial impact.

Abstract:The variation of surface compositions on amorphous Ni80.4W1.5P18.1 alloy by O2 oxidation and H2 reduction treatments have been studied by XPS, UPS and ISS. It shows that addition of tungsten in the amorphous Ni–P alloy leads to dramatic changes of the relating component distributions in the surface layers before and after these treatments. Oxidation of a Ni80.4W1.5P18.1 amorphous alloy in 1 bar of oxygen at 513 K caused a significant segregation of nickel in different oxide states at the surface. The subsequent reduction of the oxidized surface with 1 bar hydrogen at 553 K resulted in only a small portion of Ni and P being reduced into elemental states, while most of them was found to combine to form a kind of nickel phosphate compound. On the other hand, under the same conditions, the oxidation and reduction of a Ni80P20 alloy gave rise to metallic Ni and elemental P as the predominate species on the alloy surface. The addition of W in the amorphous alloy might act as nuclei for a favorable formation of the phosphate structure which was proposed to be an active species for hydrogen-relating catalytic reactions.
Stabilization of the VO2(M2) Phase and Change in Lattice Parameters at the Phase Transition Temperature of WXV1- XO2 Thin Films

Abstract:Various methods have been used to fabricate vanadium dioxide (VO2) thin films exhibiting polymorph phases and an identical chemical formula suited to different applications. Most fabrication techniques require post-annealing to convert the amorphous VO2 thin film into the VO2 (M1) phase. In this study, we provide a temperature-dependent XRD analysis that confirms the change in lattice parameters responsible for the metal-to-insulator transition as the structure undergoes a monoclinic to the tetragonal phase transition. In our study, we deposited VO2 and W-doped VO2 thin films onto silica substrates using a high repetition rate (10 kHz) fs-PLD deposition without post-annealing. The XRD patterns measured at room temperature revealed stabilization of the monoclinic M2 phase by W6+ doping VO2. We developed an alternative approach to determine the phase transition temperatures using temperature-dependent X-ray diffraction measurements to evaluate the a and b lattice parameters for the monoclinic and rutile phases. The a and b lattice parameters versus temperature revealed phase transition temperature reduction from ∼66 to 38 °C when the W6+ concentration increases. This study provides a novel unorthodox technique to characterize and evaluate the structural phase transitions seen on VO2 thin films.
Facile Strategy for Synthesizing Non-Stoichiometric Monoclinic Structured Tungsten Trioxide (WO3−x) with Plasma Resonance Absorption and Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity

Abstract:Oxygen vacancy defects play an important role in improving the light-capturing and photocatalytic activity of tungsten trioxide (WO3). However, the hydrogen treatment method that is commonly used to introduce oxygen vacancies is expensive and dangerous. Therefore, the introduction and control of oxygen vacancy defects in WO3 remains a challenge. Here, we demonstrated that oxygen vacancies could be successfully introduced into WO3−x while using a facile method through low temperature annealing in alcohol. The obtained WO3−x samples with optimal oxygen vacancies showed strong absorption of light, extending from the ultraviolet to the visible and near-infrared regions, and exhibits strong plasmon resonance from 400–1200 nm peaking at approximately 800 nm. When compared to pristine WO3, the photocatalytic activity of WO3−x was greatly improved in the ultraviolet and visible regions. This study provides a simple and efficient method to generate oxygen vacancies in WO3 for photocatalysis, which may be applied in the photoelectrochemical, electrochromic, and photochromic fields. Because oxygen vacancy is a common characteristic of metal oxides, the findings that are presented herein may be extended to other metal oxides.

Abstract:Understanding the mechanism of W-doping induced reduction of critical temperature ( T C ) for VO 2 metal-insulator transition (MIT) is crucial for both fundamental study and technological application. Here, using synchrotron radiation X-ray absorption spectroscopy combined with first-principles calculations, we unveil the atomic structure evolutions of W dopant and its role in tailoring the T C of VO 2 MIT. We find that the local structure around W atom is intrinsically symmetric with a tetragonal-like structure, exhibiting a concentration-dependent evolution involving the initial distortion, further repulsion and final stabilization due to the strong interaction between doped W atoms and VO 2 lattices across the MIT. These results directly give the experimental evidence that the symmetric W core drives the detwisting of the nearby asymmetric monoclinic VO 2 lattice to form rutile-like VO 2 nuclei and the propagations of these W-encampassed nuclei through the matrix lower the thermal energy barrier for phase transition.
Effect of initial exposure temperature on the deuterium retention and surface blistering in tungsten

Abstract:Temperature is one of the critical factors that strongly affect the behavior of hydrogen isotopes in tungsten (W). This work investigates the effect of initial exposure temperature on the deuterium (D) retention and surface blistering in recrystallized W. D plasma exposure is started at 420 K and 600 K, respectively, and then changed to the same temperature of 520 K. For each temperature, the irradiation fluence is ∼ 1 × 1026 D m−2, and therefore the total fluence is ∼ 2 × 1026 D m−2 for each sample. A reference W sample was also exposed at 520 K with the same total fluence. Compared with the reference sample, it is found that the initial temperature of 420 K significantly inhibits the formation of intergranular blisters and leads to a reduction of intragranular blisters in size. Although the initial temperature of 600 K facilitates the formation of intergranular blisters, the intergranular blister size is reduced. This is possibly related to the relatively higher concentration of trapped D over a large depth range as revealed by the TMAP simulation results, leading to the fact that intergranular cracks are more prone to propagate along sloping grain boundaries. Thermal desorption spectra results show that the initial exposure temperature of 420 K and 600 K reduce D retention by a factor of ∼ 56 % and ∼ 34 %, respectively. It is considered to be connected with the blistering-induced defects and D transport in W, which are strongly affected by the initial exposure temperature. From Hexagonal to Monoclinic: Engineering Crystalline Phase to Boost the Intrinsic Catalytic Activity of Tungsten Oxides for the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:The intrinsic activity of catalysts is crucial for the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction, which is essentially dependent on their crystal structure and surface electronic state. The variable crystalline phase in tungsten oxide (WO3) can provide a favorable opportunity for modulating surface electronic state. In this work, the structure–activity relationship of the representative hexagonal and monoclinic phase WO3 (h-WO3 and m-WO3) for the hydrogen evolution reaction was discussed in detail by experimental techniques combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. DFT calculations reveal that m-WO3 exhibits the modest H-adsorption/desorption energy, which is beneficial to the fast desorption of active H* intermediate compared to h-WO3, displaying superior catalytic activity in the hydrogen evolution reaction. To accelerate the charge transfer, introduction of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) further amplifies the intrinsic catalytic activity endowed with this crystalline phase. In acid media, the m-WO3/rGO catalyst shows a low Tafel slope of 32 mV dec–1, requires an overpotential of only 35 mV to drive a current density of 10 mA cm–2, and keeps excellent stability during accelerated durability test. This work presents significance of crystalline phase for optimizing the intrinsic activity of catalyst and provides a novel idea to design a high-efficient catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction.
