Abstract:lesions. The aim of this study was to present and evaluate our initial experience with a new hearing-preserving extension of the classic retrosigmoid approach to the inframeatal/infralabyrinthine area. Case Presentation: The approach was used in four patients harboring lesions in the petrous apex with variable extension in the inframeatal/infralabyrinthine region. The surgical accessibility of the lesions offered by the approach, completeness of tumor removal, the outcome, in particular, the functional outcome and complication rate, were assessed. Conclusions: The tumor could be gross totally resected in all the four cases. No approach-related morbidities occurred. Serviceable hearing and normal facial nerve functions were preserved in all cases. Our initial experience with the retrosigmoid inframeatal approach revealed that it provides sufficient access to the inframeatal/infralabyrinthine region and offers the possibility of complete tumor removal without any major complications. It allows for hearing and facial nerve functional preservation.

Abstract:Sauropod dinosaurs include the largest land animals to have walked the earth, mostly weighing 10-70 tons (e.g., Sander et al.1 and Carballido et al.2). Osteohistology suggests that derived physiological traits evolved near the origin of sauropod gigantism, including both rapid and uninterrupted growth from juvenile to adult with little developmental plasticity.1,3,4 This differs from the slower, seasonally interrupted growth of their direct ancestors, as evident in most non-sauropodan sauropodomorphs, which also show developmental plasticity in some groups. Accelerated but seasonally interrupted growth is present in Lessemsauridae, the sister clade to Sauropoda, which also attained giant adult body sizes (>10 tons).5 These observations suggest a correlation between giant size and accelerated growth. However, testing this evolutionary connection has been limited by the incomplete understanding of the growth patterns in some of the closest non-giant relatives of sauropods. We present the osteohistology of two such taxa, Aardonyx celestae and Sefapanosaurus zatronensis. Both exhibit highly vascularized woven-parallel complexes, with fibrolamellar complexes during early to mid-ontogeny, containing regular growth marks. These observations provide strong evidence for rapid but seasonally interrupted growth with limited developmental plasticity (indicated by the regular spacing of growth marks). Combined with our review of early branching sauropodomorph osteohistology, these results show that highly accelerated growth rates originated among smaller, non-sauropodan sauropodomorphs weighing 1 to 2 tons but preceded the origins of giant size (>10 tons). Therefore, the capacity for rapid bone tissue formation, a derived aspect of rapid growth seen in sauropods, did not evolve specifically to enable giant body sizes but may have been a prerequisite for them.

Abstract:Dinosauria debuted on Earth’s stage in the aftermath of the Permo-Triassic Mass Extinction Event, and survived two other Triassic extinction intervals to eventually dominate terrestrial ecosystems. More than 231 million years ago, in the Upper Triassic Ischigualasto Formation of west-central Argentina, dinosaurs were just getting warmed up. At this time, dinosaurs represented a minor fraction of ecosystem diversity. Members of other tetrapod clades, including synapsids and pseudosuchians, shared convergently evolved features related to locomotion, feeding, respiration, and metabolism and could have risen to later dominance. However, it was Dinosauria that radiated in the later Mesozoic most significantly in terms of body size, diversity, and global distribution. Elevated growth rates are one of the adaptations that set later Mesozoic dinosaurs apart, particularly from their contemporary crocodilian and mammalian compatriots. When did the elevated growth rates of dinosaurs first evolve? How did the growth strategies of the earliest known dinosaurs compare with those of other tetrapods in their ecosystems? We studied femoral bone histology of an array of early dinosaurs alongside that of non-dinosaurian contemporaries from the Ischigualasto Formation in order to test whether the oldest known dinosaurs exhibited novel growth strategies. Our results indicate that the Ischigualasto vertebrate fauna collectively exhibits relatively high growth rates. Dinosaurs are among the fastest growing taxa in the sample, but they occupied this niche alongside crocodylomorphs, archosauriformes, and large-bodied pseudosuchians. Interestingly, these dinosaurs grew at least as quickly, but more continuously than sauropodomorph and theropod dinosaurs of the later Mesozoic. These data suggest that, while elevated growth rates were ancestral for Dinosauria and likely played a significant role in dinosaurs’ ascent within Mesozoic ecosystems, they did not set them apart from their contemporaries.

Abstract:Intraspecific variation in growth trajectories provides a fundamental source of variation upon which natural selection acts. Recent work hints that early dinosaurs possessed elevated levels of such variation compared to other archosaurs, but comprehensive data uniting body size, bone histology, and morphological variation from a stratigraphically constrained early dinosaur population are needed to test this hypothesis. The Triassic theropod Coelophysis bauri, known from a bonebed preserving a single population of coeval individuals, provides an exceptional system to assess whether highly variable growth patterns were present near the origin of Dinosauria. Twenty-four histologically sampled individuals were less than a year to at least four years old and confirm the right-skewed age distribution of the Coelophysis assemblage. Poor correlations among size, age, and morphological maturity strongly support the presence of unique, highly variable growth trajectories in early dinosaurs relative to coeval archosaurs and their living kin.

Abstract:Sauropod dinosaurs include the largest terrestrial vertebrates that have ever lived. Virtually every part of the sauropod body is heavily modified in association with gigantic size and associated physiological alterations. Sauropod skulls are no exception: they feature elongated, telescoped facial regions connected to tilted neurocrania and reoriented jaw adductor muscles. Several of these cranial features have been suggested to be adaptations for feeding on the one hand and the result of paedomorphic transformation near the base of Sauropoda on the other. However, the scarcity of sauropodomorph ontogenetic series has impeded further investigation of these hypotheses. We re-evaluated the cranial material attributed to the early sauropodomorph Anchisaurus, which our phylogenetic analyses confirm to be closely related to sauropods. Digital assembly of μCT-scanned skulls of the two known specimens, a juvenile and an adult, permitted us to examine the detailed ontogeny of cranial elements. The skull anatomy of Anchisaurus is distinguished by a mosaic of ancestral saurischian and sauropod-like characters. Sauropod-like characters of the braincase and adductor chamber appear late in ontogeny, suggesting that these features first evolved by the developmental mechanism of terminal addition. Shape analyses and investigation of allometric evolution demonstrate that cranial characters that appear late in the ontogeny of sauropodomorphs closely related to sauropods are already present in the embryos and juveniles of sauropods, suggesting a predisplacement-type shift in developmental timing from the ancestral anchisaurian condition. We propose that this developmental shift relaxed prior constraints on skull morphology, allowing sauropods to explore a novel range of phenotypes and enabling specializations of the feeding apparatus. The shift in timing occurred in concert with the evolution of gigantism and physiological and locomotory innovations.
Sauropodomorph evolution across the Triassic-Jurassic boundary: body size, locomotion, and their influence on morphological disparity

Abstract:Sauropodomorph dinosaurs were the dominant medium to large-sized herbivores of most Mesozoic continental ecosystems, being characterized by their long necks and reaching a size unparalleled by other terrestrial animals (> 60 tonnes). Our study of morphological disparity across the entire skeleton shows that during the Late Triassic the oldest known sauropodomorphs occupied a small region of morphospace, subsequently diversifying both taxonomically and ecologically, and shifting to a different and broader region of the morphospace. After the Triassic-Jurassic boundary event, there are no substancial changes in sauropodomorph morphospace occupation. Almost all Jurassic sauropodomorph clades stem from ghost lineages that cross the Triassic-Jurassic boundary, indicating that variations after the extinction were more related to changes of pre-existing lineages (massospondylids, non-gravisaurian sauropodiforms) rather than the emergence of distinct clades or body plans. Modifications in the locomotion (bipedal to quadrupedal) and the successive increase in body mass seem to be the main attributes driving sauropodomorph morphospace distribution during the Late Triassic and earliest Jurassic. The extinction of all non-sauropod sauropodomorphs by the Toarcian and the subsequent diversification of gravisaurian sauropods represent a second expansion of the sauropodomorph morphospace, representing the onset of the flourishing of these megaherbivores that subsequently dominated in Middle and Late Jurassic terrestrial assemblages.

Abstract:The long-necked dinosaurs, sauropods, are famous for their extreme body sizes, evolving body masses several times greater than the next-heaviest terrestrial animals, elephant-like and rhinoceros- like mammals and 'duck-billed' dinosaurs. The pace of sauropod discovery has been exponential in recent decades, resulting in the recognition of sauropods as a global, ecologically diverse group of herbivorous dinosaurs comprising over 250 known species1. However, limitations due to missing data from their patchy fossil record have so far limited studies of sauropod body-size evolution to less than half their known diversity1. Here, I present models to confidently predict unknown limb-bone measurements in sauropods, resulting in a dataset 50% larger than previously assembled. Leveraging the emerging consilience among body mass estimation methods for fossil tetrapods, I then map sauropod body mass evolution through time in a phylogenetic context. Likelihood-based ancestral state reconstruction reveals that sauropods convergently surpassed maximum terrestrial mammalian body mass at least three dozen times over the course of 100 million years, on at least six landmasses and in at least five ecomorphologically disparate clades. Sauropod maximum body mass rapidly increased early in their evolutionary history from under 5,000 kg before levelling off around 40,000 kg (with notable exceptions)2, in a pattern similar to that observed in terrestrial mammals3.
Origins of slow growth on the crocodilian stem lineage

Abstract:Crocodilians grow slowly and have low metabolic rates similar to other living reptiles, but palaeohistology indicates that they evolved from an ancestor with higher growth rates.1,2,3,4,5 It remains unclear when slow growth appeared in the clade due to the sparse data on key divergences among early Mesozoic members of their stem lineage. We present new osteohistological data from a broad sample of early crocodylomorphs, evaluated in a phylogenetic context alongside other pseudosuchians. We find that the transition to slow-growing bone types during mid-late ontogeny occurred around the origin of Crocodylomorpha during the Late Triassic. Earlier-diverging pseudosuchians had high maximum growth rates, as indicated by the presence of woven bone during middle and (sometimes) late ontogeny.6,7,8,9 Large-bodied pseudosuchians in particular exhibit some of the fastest-growing bone types, giving evidence for prolonged, rapid growth. By contrast, early-branching crocodylomorphs, including a new large-bodied taxon, had slow maximum rates of bone deposition, as evidenced by the presence of predominantly parallel-fibered or lamellar bone tissue during middle-late ontogeny. Late Triassic crocodylomorphs show skeletal anatomy consistent with "active" terrestrial habits,10,11,12 and their slow growth rates reject hypotheses linking this transition with sedentary, semiaquatic lifestyles or sprawling posture. Faster-growing pseudosuchian lineages go extinct in the Triassic, whereas slow-growing crocodylomorphs do not. This contrasts with the Jurassic radiation of fast-growing dinosaurs on the bird-stem lineage,13 suggesting that the End-Triassic mass extinction initiated a divergent distribution of growth strategies that persist in present-day archosaurs.

Abstract:Theropods comprise a successful group of mostly predatory dinosaurs with varied growth rates that colonized all continents. Much research has addressed the histology of the Global North's Mesozoic populations, especially coelurosaurians and allosauroids. However, little has been done to understand the histological patterns of the Gondwanan populations, especially abelisauroids. Previous studies detected disparate (parallel-fibered or fibrolamellar) bone profiles between noasaurids and abelisaurids but did not include broader quantitative analyses. Here we describe the femoral histology of a mid-sized abelisaurid from the Upper Cretaceous Serra da Galga Formation, Bauru Group, Southeast Brazil. Despite the harsh semiarid paleotropical context, our specimen shows a growth rate more similar to the Patagonian abelisaurids, challenging a previous hypothesis on environmental pressure selecting taxa with lower growth rates and parallel-fibered bone tissue. We also bring data to bear from several taxa to test the hypothesis of tissue differentiation within abelisauroid clades. Our logistic regression and correlation analyses show that the variation in histology in noasaurids and abelisaurids can be explained by body size and phylogeny when considering fibrolamellar tissue, but not parallel-fibered tissue. A decrease in growth rate through the deposition of parallel-fibered bone tissue may be an example of evolutionary convergence between noasaurids and some small-bodied sauropods.

Abstract:Sauropodomorph dinosaurs constitute a well-studied clade of dinosaurs, notably because of the acquisition of gigantism within this group. The genus Plateosaurus is one of the best-known sauropodomorphs, with numerous remains from various localities. Its tumultuous taxonomic history suggests the relevance of addressing its intrageneric shape variability, mixed with taphonomic modifications of the original bone shape. Here we investigate quantitatively the morphological variation of Plateosaurus occurring at the genus level by studying the shape variation of a sample of limb long bones. By means of 3D geometric morphometrics, the analysis of the uncorrelated variation permits separation of the variation estimated as obviously taphonomically influenced from the more biologically plausible variation. Beyond the dominant taphonomic signal, our approach permits interpretation of the most biologically plausible features, even on anatomical parts influenced by taphonomic deformations. Those features are thus found on a quantitative basis from the variation of samples containing fossil specimens, by taking the impact of taphonomy into account, which is paramount in order to avoid making biologically ambiguous interpretations.

Abstract:The Triassic was a time of ecological upheaval as life recovered from the Permian-Triassic mass extinction. Archosauromorphs were a key component of the recovery, diversifying substantially during the Triassic and encompassing the origins of dinosaurs, pterosaurs and crocodylomorphs. Here, we explore the evolution of locomotion in Archosauromorpha to test whether dinosaurs show any distinctive locomotory features that might explain their success. We implement geometric morphometrics on limb bone shapes and use limb ratios to calculate bipedality and cursoriality metrics. We find that the Avemetatarsalia (dinosaurs, pterosaurs and relatives) exhibit more variable limb form and limb ratios than any other group, indicating a wider range of locomotory modes. The earliest avemetatarsalians were bipedal and cursorial, and their range of form increased through the Triassic with notable diversification shifts following extinction events. This is especially true of dinosaurs, even though these changes cannot be discriminated from a stochastic process. By contrast, the Pseudosuchia (crocodilians and relatives) were more restricted in limb form and locomotor mode with disparity decreasing through time, suggesting more limited locomotor adaptation and vulnerability to extinction. Perhaps the greater locomotor plasticity of dinosaurs gave them a competitive advantage in the changing climates of the Late Triassic.

Abstract:With their elongated forelimbs and variable aerial skills, paravian dinosaurs, a clade also comprising modern birds, are in the hotspot of vertebrate evolutionary research. Inferences on the early evolution of flight largely rely on bone and feather morphology, while osteohistological traits are usually studied to explore life-history characteristics. By sampling and comparing multiple homologous fore- and hind limb elements, we integrate for the first time qualitative and quantitative osteohistological approaches to get insight into the intraskeletal growth dynamics and their functional implications in five paravian dinosaur taxa, Anchiornis, Aurornis, Eosinopteryx, Serikornis, and Jeholornis. Our qualitative assessment implies a considerable diversity in allometric/isometric growth patterns among these paravians. Quantitative analyses show that neither taxa nor homologous elements have characteristic histology, and that ontogenetic stage, element size and the newly introduced relative element precocity only partially explain the diaphyseal histovariability. Still, Jeholornis, the only avialan studied here, is histologically distinct from all other specimens in the multivariate visualizations raising the hypothesis that its bone tissue characteristics may be related to its superior aerial capabilities compared to the non-avialan paravians. Our results warrant further research on the osteohistological correlates of flight and developmental strategies in birds and bird-like dinosaurs.

The evolution of femoral morphology in giant non-avian theropod dinosaurs

Abstract:Theropods are obligate bipedal dinosaurs that appeared 230 Ma and are still extant as birds. Their history is characterized by extreme variations in body mass, with gigantism evolving convergently between many lineages. However, no quantification of hindlimb functional morphology has shown whether these body mass increases led to similar specializations between distinct lineages. Here we studied femoral shape variation across 41 species of theropods (n = 68 specimens) using a high-density 3D geometric morphometric approach. We demonstrated that the heaviest theropods evolved wider epiphyses and a more distally located fourth trochanter, as previously demonstrated in early archosaurs, along with an upturned femoral head and a mediodistal crest that extended proximally along the shaft. Phylogenetically informed analyses highlighted that these traits evolved convergently within six major theropod lineages, regardless of their maximum body mass. Conversely, the most gracile femora were distinct from the rest of the dataset, which we interpret as a femoral specialization to "miniaturization" evolving close to Avialae (bird lineage). Our results support a gradual evolution of known "avian" features, such as the fusion between lesser and greater trochanters and a reduction of the epiphyseal offset, independent from body mass variations, which may relate to a more "avian" type of locomotion (more knee than hip driven). The distinction between body mass variations and a more "avian" locomotion is represented by a decoupling in the mediodistal crest morphology, whose biomechanical nature should be studied to better understand the importance of its functional role in gigantism, miniaturization, and higher parasagittal abilities.
