Abstract:Excessive greenhouse gas emissions from the transportation sector have led companies to move towards a sustainable supply chain network design. In this study we present a new bi-objective non-linear formulation where multiple inventory components are integrated into the location and routing decisions throughout the supply chain network. To efficiently solve the proposed model, we implement an exact method and four evolutionary algorithms for small and large-scale instances. Extensive computational results and sensitivity analysis are performed to validate the efficiency of the proposed approaches, both quantitatively and qualitatively. Besides, we run a statistical analysis to investigate whether there is any statistically significant difference between solution methods.

Abstract:Abstract Adoption of carbon regulation mechanisms facilitates an evolution toward green and sustainable supply chains followed by an increased complexity. Through the development and usage of a multi-choice goal programming model solved by an improved algorithm, this article investigates sustainability strategies for carbon regulations mechanisms. We first propose a sustainable logistics model that considers assorted vehicle types and gas emissions involved with product transportation. We then construct a bi-objective model that minimizes total cost as the first objective function and follows environmental considerations in the second one. With our novel robust-heuristic optimization approach, we seek to support the decision-makers in comparison and selection of carbon emission policies in supply chains in complex settings with assorted vehicle types, demand and economic uncertainty. We deploy our model in a case-study to evaluate and analyse two carbon reduction policies, i.e., carbon-tax and cap-and-trade policies. The results demonstrate that our robust-heuristic methodology can efficiently deal with demand and economic uncertainty, especially in large-scale problems. Our findings suggest that governmental incentives for a cap-and-trade policy would be more effective for supply chains in lowering pollution by investing in cleaner technologies and adopting greener practices.

Abstract:This study explores a foundational logistics center location and allocation problem in a three-stage logistics network that consists of suppliers, logistics centers, and customers. In this study, the environmental sustainability of the logistics network is improved by optimizing the carbon dioxide emissions of the logistics network based on multi-objective optimization and carbon tax regulation. Mixed uncertainties in the planning stage, including the supply capacities of suppliers, operation capacities of logistics centers, and demands of customers, are modeled using triangular fuzzy numbers based on the fuzzy set theory to order to enhance the reliability of the logistics center location and allocation planning. To solve the green logistics center location and allocation problem under mixed uncertainties, we establish two fuzzy mixed integer linear programming models. The fuzzy credibilistic chance-constrained programming is then adopted to obtain the crisp and linear reformulations of the fuzzy programming models. A numerical case is given to verify the feasibility of the proposed methods, in which the performance of carbon tax regulation in reducing carbon dioxide emissions is then tested based on the benchmark provided by the multi-objective optimization. Lastly, sensitivity analysis and fuzzy simulation are utilized to reveal the effect of the mixed uncertainties on the logistics location and allocation planning and further determine the best confidence level in the fuzzy chance constraints to provide decision makers with a crisp plan.

Abstract:In this work, a bi-objective mixed-integer linear programming model is formulated for the first time to design a green supply chain while considering both forward and reverse flows, location-inventory-routing problem with simultaneous pickup and delivery, scheduling of vehicles, and time window. This model is presented to manage the production and distribution of perishable products and aims to minimize total costs and lost demands simultaneously. To solve the proposed bi-objective model under uncertainty, an approach based on fuzzy theory is developed. The performance of the proposed model and solution approach is evaluated using data from a bread production and distribution industry in Alborz province. The results showed that Hashtgerd center should be set up as the production and separation center and suppliers 1 and 2 (i.e., Seifabad and Mahdasht) should be selected to purchase raw materials when designing this network. The results obtained from the model’s implementation in the real world and the sensitivity analysis of coefficients of objective functions indicate the desired efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed model and solution approach.

Abstract:Today, given the rising trend of e-commerce businesses, supply chain management in such chains has attracted the attention of academic societies. This research presents a multi-objective programming model to configure a dual-channel (conventional and e-commerce channels) supply chain network structure under triple uncertain sources, which jointly optimizes the allocating, pricing, and transporting decisions. Furthermore, considering the growing concerns on environmental sustainability, the environmental dimensions of the dual-channel supply chain are contributed. The proposed model minimizes the Carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions associated with transportation and the production process as an objective function to meet environmental standards. Multiple modes of transportation with different costs and CO 2 emissions are considered in each distribution channel. The multi-objective fuzzy optimization model is solved by developing a fuzzy solution approach following the linearization of the proposed model. Through the use of numerical examples, the validity of the developed model and the usefulness of the solution method are demonstrated. The sensitivity analysis has also been performed to see the impact of changing some essential parameters on objective functions. The results show that the profit and environmental performance of the two-channel supply chain improve when more goods are shipped through the traditional channel than through the direct channel.

Abstract:Integrating strategic and tactical decisions to location-allocation and green inventory planning by considering e-commerce features will pave the way for supply chain managers. Therefore, this study provides an effective framework for making decisions related to different levels of the dual-channel supply chain. We provide a bi-objective location-allocation-inventory optimization model to design a dual-channel, multi-level supply chain network. The main objectives of this study are to minimize total cost and environmental impacts while tactical and strategic decisions are integrated. Demand uncertainty is also addressed using stochastic modeling, and inventory procedure is the periodic review ( S , R ). We consider many features in inventory modeling that play a very important role, such as lead time, shortage, inflation, and quality of raw materials, to adapt the model to the real conditions. Since a dual-channel supply chain is becoming more important for sustainable economic development and resource recovery, we combine online and traditional sales channels to design a network. We generate five test problems and solve them by using the augmented ε -constraint method. Also, the Grasshopper optimization algorithm was applied to solve the model in a reasonable time for a large size problem. In order to provide managerial insights and investigate the sensitivity of variables and problem objectives with respect to parameters, sensitivity analysis was performed.

Abstract:Providing a greenhouse gas emissions perspective based on the characteristics of perishable products has made the cold chain an important topic. This paper develops a mixed integer nonlinear programming routing-location model to improve the cold chain logistics network design within the Balanced Score Card (BSC) pillars by maximizing the customer satisfaction and minimizing unit cost and greenhouse gas emissions in order to solve the optimization problem of the marine product distribution logistics system. Seven different costs are considered to deal with the characteristics of the cold chain logistics industry. An uncertain routing-location problem has been analyzed, as well as Methane and Nitrogen Oxide emissions. On the other hand, BSC has been utilized to evaluate the performance of the organization. This paper presents a mathematical optimization model for reducing system costs and evaluating system performance based on BSC, while accounting for greenhouse gas emissions and uncertainty in problem parameter values. The desired model has subsequently been solved using the BARON solver. Due to its consideration of seven types of costs, the proposed model is able to assess the costs of the cold chain logistics system with greater precision, as demonstrated by the findings of this study. In addition, these results indicate that a rise in customer satisfaction raises the overall system's expenses, but increases customer loyalty. The proposed model assists supply chain managers in selecting the optimal number of distribution centers and the most efficient routes to reduce overall system costs. They can attempt to protect the environment by establishing a relationship between customer satisfaction and greenhouse gas emissions, such as carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrogen oxide.

Abstract:This paper established a three-level supply chain composed of plants, distribution centers, and retailers, and studied the location of distribution centers in the supply chain network and the carbon emissions during processing and transportation. In a random and fuzzy environment, the research objective is to minimize the supply chain's cost and carbon emission. The multi-objective uncertain equilibrium model of the green supply chain network is established by introducing opportunity constraints, and the stability of the model can be enhanced by using variance function and risk function. Then this research integrated the theory of stochastic programming and fuzzy mathematical programming and employed Monte Carlo simulation; the sample mean approximation, chance-constrained programming and fuzzy expectation to deal with the random parameters and fuzzy parameters in the model so that the uncertain model is clarified. Further, the authors used the hierarchical method, the weighted ideal point method, restriction method, and weighted ideal point method to solve the multi-objective model. Finally, a numerical example is provided to demonstrate the feasibility of the model.

Abstract:Purpose This study aims to investigate a locating-routing-allocating problems and the supply chain, including factories distributor candidate locations and retailers. The purpose of this paper is to minimize system costs and delivery time to retailers so that routing is done and the location of the distributors is located. Design/methodology/approach The problem gets closer to reality by adding some special conditions and constraints. Retail service start times have hard and soft time windows, and each customer has a demand for simultaneous delivery and pickups. System costs include the cost of transportation, non-compliance with the soft time window, construction of a distributor, purchase or rental of a vehicle and production costs. The conceptual model of the problem is first defined and modeled and then solved in small dimensions by general algebraic modeling system (GAMS) software and non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGAII) and multiple objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO) algorithms. Findings According to the solution of the mathematical model, the average error of the two proposed algorithms in comparison with the exact solution is less than 0.7%. Also, the algorithms’ performance in terms of deviation from the GAMS exact solution, is quite acceptable and for the largest problem (N = 100) is 0.4%. Accordingly, it is concluded that NSGAII is superior to MOSPSO. Research limitations/implications In this study, since the model is bi-objective, the priorities of decision makers in choosing the optimal solution have not been considered and each of the objective functions has been given equal importance according to the weighting methods. Also, the model has not been compared and analyzed in deterministic and robust modes. This is because all variables, except the one that represents the uncertainty of traffic modes, are deterministic and the random nature of the demand in each graph is not considered. Practical implications The results of the proposed model are valuable for any group of decision makers who care optimizing the production pattern at any level. The use of a heterogeneous fleet of delivery vehicles and application of stochastic optimization methods in defining the time windows, show how effective the distribution networks are in reducing operating costs. Originality/value This study fills the gaps in the relationship between location and routing decisions in a practical way, considering the real constraints of a distribution network, based on a multi-objective model in a three-echelon supply chain. The model is able to optimize the uncertainty in the performance of vehicles to select the refueling strategy or different traffic situations and bring it closer to the state of certainty. Moreover, two modified algorithms of NSGA-II and multiple objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO) are provided to solve the model while the results are compared with the exact general algebraic modeling system (GAMS) method for the small- and medium-sized problems.

Abstract:This paper introduces a green inventory routing problem with a heterogeneous fleet which extends the conventional inventory routing problem by considering environmental impacts and heterogeneous vehicles. A comprehensive objective is proposed, which minimizes the sum of inventory cost and routing cost, where the latter includes driver wage, vehicle fixed cost, fuel and emission costs, in which fuel consumption and emissions are determined by load, distance, speed and vehicle characteristics. We first construct a mixed-integer program, and then conduct numerical tests to quantify the benefits of using a comprehensive objective and heterogeneous vehicles. Abstract:Nowadays, transportation and logistics are considered as the drivers of economic development in the countries due to their impacts on the main variables of the country's economy such as production, employment, price, and the cost of living. Statistics indicate that fuel consumption constructs a major part of transportation costs, where its optimization leads to the creation of an energy‐efficient and sustainable transportation system. On the other hand, vehicles' traffic is also one of the main criteria affecting the travel time of vehicles between demand nodes in a supply chain, increasing fuel consumption, and, consequently, damaging effects of greenhouse gasses. In this paper, a novel robust mixed‐integer linear programming model is developed for a green vehicle routing problem with intermediate depots considering different urban traffic conditions, fuel consumption, time windows of services, and uncertain demand for perishable products. To validate and solve the suggested model, CPLEX solver of GAMS software is employed as an exact method. Finally, a case study problem is investigated to evaluate the applicability of the proposed model and determine the optimal managerial insights and policies in the real‐world conditions using sensitivity analyses. Moreover, a novel robustness threshold comparison is conducted to find the optimal level of budget assignment.

Abstract:Competition in today’s market is the most important concern of companies and producers in free markets. Buyers are also looking for higher quality and lower prices. Manufacturers should, therefore, reduce production costs and increase budgets for research and product development. On the other hand, the limitation of mineral resources in each country and in the world in general is a very important factor for increasing the price of raw materials which increases the cost of production of a product. In this study, a green aspect of decision-making, concurrent modeling for inventory-routing, and application of maximum entropy (ME) method for overcoming uncertainties of demands are applied to optimize the usage of raw materials and returning of defective products to the production cycle in a closed-looped supply chain under multi-period planning horizon. Also, dynamic modeling is used to balance the inventory level in all stages of the network that leads to optimum usage of the raw materials. For this purpose, the first objective function reduces production, transportation-routing, and inventory costs, and the second objective reduces greenhouse gas emissions through all levels of the network. Finally, this model is solved by using the exact solution method with the help of Gams software as well as the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGAII) and multi-objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO) algorithm. Sensitivity analysis has been performed on failure rates, greenhouse gas emissions during recycling and production, and the optimistic-pessimistic coefficient of the ME solution method. Solution methods have been compared using several criteria, and the NSGAII method has finally obtained the best result. The results show that the manager should pay more costs in order to prevent backorder demands. Also, collecting the more defective products leads to increasing production amount since the collective products can return to the production line. Finally, it is required for the managers to control products’ failure rate to optimize capacity usage in the model.

Abstract:Inspired by a circular economy paradigm, an evolving momentum of policies and legislations aims to close the loop of product lifecycles through improved level of recycling, remanufacturing, and reuse, with the objective of adding value to the economy while not endangering the environment. However, the trade-off between the environmental and economic sustainability of designing business processes is inevitable. To address this trade-off in the supply chain context, competing objectives regarding both cost minimization and reduction in carbon emission should be simultaneously considered and integrated into a comprehensive model. This complexity is however elevated when uncertainty of demand is taken into consideration. In this study, the design of a closed-loop supply chain is investigated where competing objectives of cost and sustainability of supply chain operations are evaluated under demand uncertainty. Augmented Weighted Tchebycheff (AWT) and ε-constraint methods are employed to address the multi-objectivity of the problem while a robust optimization approach is applied to deal with the demand uncertainty. The results confirm that the proposed approach provides efficient solutions for designing a green closed-loop supply chain network.

Abstract:In recent years, there has been a tremendous increase in environmental awareness, due to concerns about sustainability. Designing an efficient supply chain network that fulfills the expectation of both business owners and customers and, at the same time, pays attention to environmental protection is becoming a trend in the commercial world. This study proposes a theoretical model incorporating vehicle routing problems (VRPs) into the typical CLSC (closed-loop supply chain) network architecture. This combination assists all operators to act more efficiently in terms of environmental protection and profitability. A mixed-integer-linear-programming model for CLSC network design with fuzzy and random uncertain data is developed to achieve the goals. The parameters of the CLSC network are also programmed using hybrid fuzzy-stochastic mathematical programming. The model is for a single product and a single timeframe. Several numerical examples are provided to demonstrate the validity of the proposed mixed-integer-linear-programming (MILP) model. This study also investigated probabilistic possibilities for recourse variables with a trapezoidal fuzzy number using a problem size of four cases. The result indicates that the model performed well in the numerical test, suggesting it can help the operation to be more profitable if this model is implemented in their daily routines.

Abstract:This paper presents a multi-objective, multi-period inventory routing problem in the supply chain of perishable products under uncertain costs. In addition to traditional objectives of cost and greenhouse gas (GHG) emission minimization, a novel objective of priority index maximization has been introduced in the model. The priority index quantifies the qualitative social aspects, such as coordination, trust, behavior, and long-term relationships among the stakeholders. In a multi-echelon supply chain, the performance of distributor/retailer is affected by the performance of supplier/distributor. The priority index measures the relative performance index of each player within the supply chain. The maximization of priority index ensures the achievement of social sustainability in the supply chain. Moreover, to model cost uncertainty, a time series integrated regression fuzzy method is developed. This research comprises of three phases. In the first phase, a mixed-integer multi-objective mathematical model while considering the cost uncertainty has been formulated. In order to determine the parameters for priority index objective function, a two-phase fuzzy inference process is used and the rest of the objectives (cost and GHG) have been modeled mathematically. The second phase involves the development of solution methodology. In this phase, to solve the mathematical model, a modified interactive multi-objective fuzzy programming has been employed that incorporates experts’ preferences for objective satisfaction based on their experiences. Finally, in the third phase, a case study of the supply chain of surgical instruments is presented as an example. The results of the case provide optimal flow of products from suppliers to hospitals and the optimal sequence of the visits of different vehicle types that minimize total cost, GHG emissions, and maximizes the priority index.

Abstract:In this study, we propose a robust bi-objective optimization model of the green closed-loop supply chain network considering presorting, a heterogeneous transportation system, and carbon emissions. The proposed model is an uncertain bi-objective mixed-integer linear optimization model that maximizes profit and minimizes carbon emissions by considering uncertain costs, selling price, and carbon emissions. The robust optimization approach is implemented using the combined interval and polyhedral, "Interval+ Polyhedral," uncertainty set to develop the robust counterpart of the proposed model. Robust Pareto optimal solutions are obtained using a lexicographic weighted Tchebycheff optimization approach of the bi-objective model. Intensive computational experiments are conducted and a robust Pareto optimal front is obtained with a probability guarantee that the constraints containing uncertain parameters are not violated (constraint satisfaction).

Abstract:The present study addresses a green model of vendor managed inventory policy for perishable goods in a multi-period two-echelon supply chain network. Shortage is permissible and the unsatisfied demand is considered as back order. In addition, uncertainties in prices and manufacturing costs are considered as the main contribution of this study. Two objective functions are considered to optimize simultaneously. (a) Maximizing profits and (b) minimizing the amount of carbon emissions. This problem is formulated and the effects of uncertainty in key parameters are investigated using several decision trees. The result of the study shows the efficiency of the proposed procedure in dealing with uncertainties. Accordingly, increasing backorder costs lead to a decrease in order quantity and a decrease in profit value. However, this change reduces the emission of pollutants due to the reduced need for transport. In addition, profit levels increase and carbon emissions decrease as the product lifespan increases.

Abstract:The emergence of the circular economy concept has pushed industry owners towards the green supply chain and waste reduction. The closed-loop supply chain originates from the concept of the circular economy and its purpose is to increase efficiency and profitability by reducing waste and energy consumption. Hence, in this research, an integrated bi-objective mixed-integer linear programming model is developed with the aim of optimizing both operational and strategic decisions in a closed-loop supply chain network. The proposed model benefits the location-inventory-routing problem to structure the network, and it applies a carbon tax policy and vehicle scheduling problem to reduce emissions and vehicle waiting time, respectively. Considering problems such as split-delivery, storage possibility, shortage, supplier selection, order allocation, heterogenous vehicles, and uncertain demand has led to the development of a comprehensive model. A stochastic scenario-based approach is used to deal with demand uncertainty, and an augmented epsilon-constraint method is employed to solve the proposed bi-objective model. The applicability of the proposed model and the effectiveness of the bi-objective solution approach for achieving circular economy are examined through its implementation in a cable and wire industry in Iran.

Abstract:A robust bi-level model of the single-product multi-period network design problem is proposed for a competitive green supply chain considering pricing and inventory decisions under uncertainty and disruption risks. The bi-level programming approach is used through this model to demonstrate the competition among two supply chains; the leader and the follower, respectively. After modelling the competition and applying pricing decisions by defining a price-dependent demand, disruption risks are analysed through the model. The proposed model simultaneously considers demand uncertainty and disruption risks and is capable of dealing with such uncertainties by implementing resilience strategies including, inventory decisions, and having a contract with reliable suppliers. Moreover, to consider the environmental issues, controlling CO2 emissions and managing the reverse flow were added to the model. Our approach to mitigate the problem uncertainties is to use the possibilistic programming method. The Karush-Kuhan-Tucker (K-K-T) optimality conditions are deployed to make a single-level equivalent form. Since the integrated model was bi-objective, the ϵ-constraint method is implemented to make a single objective integrated model. Finally, some managerial implications are discussed through an industrial case example.
