Abstract:Free-swimming polychaetes are common in marine habitats and exhibit a unique form of swimming whereby a metachronal wave occurs simultaneously with a bending body wave. This body wave is unusual among swimming animals because it travels in the same direction as the animal's swimming direction. However, we currently lack a mechanistic understanding of this unusual form of locomotion. In this study we use a combination of high-speed, high-resolution video and particle image velocimetry (PIV) to quantify kinematics and fluid dynamics for three species of swimming polychaetes, spanning two orders of magnitude in size. We find that in all species, flows generated by metachronal waves of parapodia dominate while typical flows associated with body bending is absent. However, the parapodia are less flexible than propulsive structures in other metachronal swimmers. This creates a localized, but substantial upstream flow during the recovery stroke. Using body bending, the recovery stroke can occur mostly beneath the bulk flow from the power strokes, resulting in minimal inference while the subsequent power stroke can benefit from the pressure field generated during recovery. These results may have implications for future vehicle designs that incorporate metachronal locomotion.

Abstract:Many of the most abundant aquatic invertebrates display metachronal swimming by sequentially beating closely spaced flexible appendages. Common biophysical mechanisms like appendage spatial asymmetry and phase drive the success and performance of this locomotor mode, which is generally explained by the need to maximize thrust production. However, the potential role of these mechanisms in drag reduction, another important contributor to the overall swimming performance, has yet to be evaluated. We present a comprehensive overview of the morphological, functional, and physical mechanisms promoting drag reduction during metachronal swimming by exploring appendage differential bending and leg grouping (coalescence). We performed μ-CT and in-vivo velocimetry measurements of shrimp ( ) to design a five-legged robotic metachronal analog. This test platform enabled simultaneous flow and force measurements to quantify the thrust and drag forces produced by flexible and stiff pleopods (legs) beating independently or coalescing. We tested the hypothesis that coalescence and bending effectively reduce drag during the recovery stroke (RS). The curved cross-section of the pleopods enables passive asymmetrical bending during the RS to reduce their coefficient of drag by up to 75.8% relative to stiff pleopods. Bending promotes physical interactions facilitating the coalescence of three pleopods at any time during the RS to reduce drag such that the mean net thrust produced during coalescence is increased by 30.2%. These improvements are explained by the production of a weaker wake compared with stiff and non-coalescing pleopods. Our results describe fundamental biological and physical components of metachronal propulsion that may aid the development of novel bio-inspired underwater vehicles.

Abstract:AbstractThis paper presents the mechanical design, modeling, and experimental behavior of a novel biomimetic robot inspired by water striders, which are six-legged insects that move on water by propelling themselves using two mesothoracic legs and supporting themselves with the four other legs. As the surface tension of water is too low for the robot to carry heavy equipment, four hollow elongated ellipsoids are used as the supporting legs. Relative to a screw propeller, the rowing legs cause less turbulence in the water. Because of the propeller, this robot can operate in various environments, such as a windy lake, underground pipeline, and even the sea. The total weight of the robot is 439 g. The paper is focused mainly on the hydrodynamic characteristics of the stroke legs and supporting legs. The model of flow over a flat plate is used to describe the hydrodynamic characteristics of the stroke legs, which can be used to improve the shape of the paddle. Several shapes of supporting legs are tested by STAR-CCM+ software to determine the running resistance. By modeling the hydrodynamics of the stroke and supporting legs, the structure of the robot can be improved. As experimentally validated, this robot exhibits good performance on water and can reach an average speed of 125.5 mm/s.
Pleobot: a modular robotic solution for metachronal swimming

Abstract:Metachronal locomotion is a widespread swimming mode used by aquatic swarming organisms to achieve performance and maneuverability in the intermediate Reynolds number regime. Our understanding of the mechanisms driving these abilities is limited due to the challenges of studying live organisms. Designs inspired by nature present an approach for developing small and maneuverable underwater self-propelled robots. Here, we present the design, manufacture, and validation of the \emph{Pleobot} --a unique krill-inspired robotic swimming appendage constituting the first platform to study metachronal propulsion comprehensively. Our methods combine a multi-link 3D printed mechanism with active and passive actuation of the joints to generate natural kinematics. Using force and fluid flow measurements in parallel with biological data, we show the link between the flow produced by the appendage and thrust. Further, we provide the first account of a leading-edge suction effect that contributes to lift during the power stroke. The repeatability and modularity of the \emph{Pleobot} enable the independent manipulation of particular motions and traits to test hypotheses central to understanding the relationship between form and function. Lastly, we outline future directions for the \emph{Pleobot}, including adapting morphological features. We foresee a broad appeal to a wide array of scientific disciplines, from fundamental studies in ecology, biology, and engineering, to developing new platforms for studying oceans across the solar system.

Abstract:The water‐surface propulsion of an undulatory swimmer stems from the complex interplay of various forces that are generated by the body's waveform and the waves at the water‐air interface. Adjusting the material and dimensions of the body, along with the excitation manner of the head, allows for tuning of the swimmer's waveform that is crucial for optimizing propulsion performance. The oscillatory pitch motion at the leading edge of a millimeter‐scale flexible sheet on the water surface can generate undulatory locomotion for swimming, similar to a honeybee vibrating its wings for propulsion. The influence of various parameters on such swimming strategy remains unexplored. This study uses magnetic milliswimmers to probe the propulsion mechanics and impact of different parameters. It is found that this undulatory propulsion is driven by capillary forces and added mass effects related to undulatory waves of the milliswimmers, along with radiation stress stemming from capillary waves at the interface. Modifying the parameters such as actuation frequency, pitch amplitude, bending stiffness, and hydrofoil length alters the body waveform, thus, affecting the propulsion speed and energy efficiency. Although undulatory motion is not a prerequisite for water surface propulsion, optimizing body stiffness to achieve a proper undulatory waveform is crucial for efficient swimming, balancing energy consumption, and speed. The study also reveals that the induced water flow is confined near the water surface, and the flow structures evolve with varying factors. These discoveries advance the understanding of undulatory water surface propulsion and have implications for the optimal design of small‐scale swimming soft robots in the future.

Abstract:Metachronal swimming is a common form of locomotion in which organisms stroke multiple appendages sequentially. It is used by many aquatic organisms, including paramecia, copepods, ctenophores, and krill, and spans the viscous to inertial regimes across seven orders of magnitude of Reynolds numbers (Re). Through analysis of morphological and kinematics data collected from the literature, we find a strong power law relationship between Re and the Swimming Number Sw, which describes the appendage kinematics. This scaling law is maintained for all flow regimes, explains why metachronal swimming is successful at low Re, and may be useful in designing bio-inspired metachronally paddling robots. [Phys. Rev. Abstract:Study of the locomotion of a centipede (L. forficatus) at the air-water interface reveals that it does not predominantly use its 14 leg pairs to locomote; unlike most swimmers which propagate head-to-tail body bending waves, this species propels via tail-to-head waves. Its low mass and body-fluid contact yield locomotion dynamics in which fluid wave drag forces dominate inertia. Microorganism-inspired wave drag resistive force theory captures swimming performance of the macroscale animal, motivating a control hypothesis for the animals self-propulsion body and limb kinematics.

Abstract:Marine flatworms (polyclads) employ a wide variety of body kinematics for swimming. In the current study, we employ computational fluid dynamics to study the hydrodynamics and swimming performance of a large variety of swimmers inspired directly from flatworms as well as two other marine invertebrates: Aplysia and Spanish dancers. The free-swimming performance is evaluated via two metrics: Froude efficiency and terminal swimming speed. The study examines the effect of the flapping of the lateral margins of the body as well as body undulation, which are used in various combinations by these animals to achieve swimming. The simulations suggest that a spanwise compact wake with distinct vortex ring structures is well correlated with a high swimming performance. We find that the addition of even a small magnitude of body undulation to lateral flapping results in significant changes in the wake patterns and noticeable improvements in the swimming performance compared to swimmers that employ only lateral flapping. Periodic body-bending synchronized with lateral flapping, as employed by the Spanish dancer, is found to be a very effective swimming gait. Some gaits that employ body undulations but no lateral flapping are found to generate high swimming speeds but with limited swimming efficiencies. Taken together, this study provides insights that could inform the design of swimming robots.

Abstract:Abstract An undulatory pattern of body bending in which waves pass along the body from head to tail is a major means of creating thrust in many fish species during steady locomotion. Analyses of live fish swimming have provided the foundation of our current understanding of undulatory locomotion, but our inability to experimentally manipulate key variables such as body length, flexural stiffness, and tailbeat frequency in freely-swimming fish has limited our ability to investigate a number of important features of undulatory propulsion. In this paper we use a robotic apparatus to create an undulatory wave in swimming passive flexible foils by creating a heave motion at their leading edge, and compare this motion to body bending patterns of bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus) and clown knifefish (Notopterus chitala). We found similar swimming speeds, Reynolds and Strouhal numbers, and patterns of curvature and shape between these fish and foils suggesting that passive flexible foils provide a useful model for understanding fish undulatory locomotion. We swam foils with different lengths, stiffnesses, and heave frequencies while measuring forces, torques, and hydrodynamics. From measured forces and torques we calculated thrust and power coefficients, work, and cost of transport for each foil. We found that increasing frequency and stiffness produced faster swimming speeds and more thrust. Increasing length had minimal impact on swimming speed, but had a large impact on Strouhal number, cost of transport, and thrust coefficient. Foils that were both stiff and long had the lowest cost of transport (in mJ m-1 g-1) at low cycle frequencies, and the ability to reach the highest speed at high cycle frequencies.

Abstract:Planktonic organisms feed while suspended in water using various hydrodynamic pumping strategies. Appendicularians are a unique group of plankton that use their tail to pump water over mucous mesh filters to concentrate food particles. As ubiquitous and often abundant members of planktonic ecosystems, they play a major role in oceanic food webs. Yet, we lack a complete understanding of the fluid flow that underpins their filtration. Using high-speed, high-resolution video and micro particle image velocimetry, we describe the kinematics and hydrodynamics of the tail in Oikopleura dioica in filtering and free-swimming postures. We show that sinusoidal waves of the tail generate peristaltic pumping within the tail chamber with fluid moving parallel to the tail when filtering. We find that the tail contacts attachment points along the tail chamber during each beat cycle, serving to seal the tail chamber and drive pumping. When we tested how the pump performs across environmentally relevant temperatures, we found that the amplitude of the tail was invariant but tail beat frequency increased threefold across three temperature treatments (5°C, 15°C and 25°C). Investigation into this unique pumping mechanism gives insight into the ecological success of appendicularians and provides inspiration for novel pump designs.

Abstract:Abstract Propulsion by copepods requires high-speed video and intensive analyses. Routine smooth swimming is compared with small relocation jumps and escape reactions, relying on kinematics analyses of appendage movement. In this study, we used high-speed video at 1200 frames per second to determine the kinematic parameters of three types of swimming in Eurytemora affinis females: routine steady swimming, small relocation jumps and escape reactions. The average speed varied in the range 0.30–0.82 cm s−1 during steady routine swimming. This value increased to 4.48 ± 1.01 cm s−1 during small relocation jumps, and reached 21.94 ± 2.68 cm s−1 during escape reactions. The small angular amplitude (40–50°) and the very high beat frequency (63–80 Hz) of the cephalic appendages during routine swimming indicate that E. affinis is a feeding-current feeder. The comparison of the angular displacements of the antennules, thoracic legs and abdomen with respect to the movement speed demonstrates that, both in the case of small relocation jumps and during escape reactions, the main propulsive role is played by the thoracic swimming legs and abdomen.

Abstract:Many organisms use flexible appendages for locomotion, feeding, and other functional behaviors. The efficacy of these behaviors is determined in large part by the fluid dynamics of the appendage interacting with its environment. For oscillating appendages at low Reynolds numbers, viscosity dominates over inertia, and appendage motion must be spatially asymmetric to generate net flow. At high Reynolds numbers, viscous forces are negligible and appendage motion is often also temporally asymmetric, with a fast power stroke and a slow recovery stroke; such temporal asymmetry does not affect the produced flow at low Reynolds numbers. At intermediate Reynolds numbers, both viscous and inertial forces play non-trivial roles---correspondingly, both spatial and temporal asymmetry can strongly affect overall propulsion. Here we perform experiments on three robotic paddles with different material flexibilities and geometries, allowing us to explore the effects of motion asymmetry (both spatial and temporal) on force production. We show how a flexible paddle's time-varying shape throughout the beat cycle can reorient the direction of the produced force, generating both thrust and lift. We also evaluate the propulsive performance of the paddle by introducing a new quantity, which we term "integrated efficiency". This new definition of propulsive efficiency can be used to directly evaluate an appendage's performance independently from full-body swimming dynamics. Use of the integrated efficiency allows for accurate performance assessment, generalization, and comparison of oscillating appendages in both robotic devices and behaving organisms. Finally, we show that a curved flexible paddle generates thrust more efficiently than a straight paddle, and produces spatially asymmetric motion---thereby improving performance---without the need for complex actuation and controls, opening new avenues for bioinspired technology development.

Encoding spatiotemporal asymmetry in artificial cilia with a ctenophore-inspired soft-robotic platform

Abstract:A remarkable variety of organisms use metachronal coordination (i.e., numerous neighboring appendages beating sequentially with a fixed phase lag) to swim or pump fluid. This coordination strategy is used by microorganisms to break symmetry at small scales where viscous effects dominate and flow is time-reversible. Some larger organisms use this swimming strategy at intermediate scales, where viscosity and inertia both play important roles. However, the role of individual propulsor kinematics - especially across hydrodynamic scales - is not well-understood, though the details of propulsor motion can be crucial for the efficient generation of flow. To investigate this behavior, we developed a new soft robotic platform using magnetoactive silicone elastomers to mimic the metachronally coordinated propulsors found in swimming organisms. Furthermore, we present a method to passively encode spatially asymmetric beating patterns in our artificial propulsors. We investigated the kinematics and hydrodynamics of three propulsor types, with varying degrees of asymmetry, using Particle Image Velocimetry and high-speed videography. We find that asymmetric beating patterns can move considerably more fluid relative to symmetric beating at the same frequency and phase lag, and that asymmetry can be passively encoded into propulsors via the interplay between elastic and magnetic torques. Our results demonstrate that nuanced differences in propulsor kinematics can substantially impact fluid pumping performance. Our soft robotic platform also provides an avenue to explore metachronal coordination at the meso-scale, which in turn can inform the design of future bioinspired pumping devices and swimming robots.

Hybrid Undulatory Kinematics of a Robotic Mackerel (scomber Scombrus): Theoretical Modeling and Experimental Investigation

Abstract:Fishes that use undulatory locomotion occasionally change their inherent kinematics in terms of some natural behavior. This special locomotion pattern was vividly dubbed “hybrid kinematics” by biologists recently. In this paper, we employed a physical model with body shape of a Mackerel (Scomber scombrus), to use the three most typical undulatory kinematics: anguillform, carangiform and thunniform, to investigate the hydrodynamic performance of the so-called “hybrid kinematics” biological issue. Theoretical models of both kinematics and hydrodynamics of the physical model swimming were developed. Base on this model, the instantaneous force produced by fish undulatory body and flapping tail were calculated separately. We also quantitatively measured the hydrodynamic variables of the robotic model swimming with the three undulatory kinematics on an experimental apparatus. The results of both theoretical model and experiment showed that the robot with thunniform kinematics not only reaches a higher speed but also is more efficient during steady swimming mode. However, anguilliform kinematics won the speed race during the initial acceleration. Additionally, the digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV) results showed some difference of the wake flow generated by the robotic swimmer among the three undulatory kinematics. Our findings may possibly shed light on the motion control of a biomimetic robotic fish and provide certain evidence of why the “hybrid kinematics” exists within the typical undulatory locomotion patterns.
The role of cytosolic potassium and pH in the growth of barley roots

Abstract:In an earlier paper we showed that in fully developed barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) root epidermal cells a decrease in cytosolic K+ was associated with an acidification of the cytosol (D.J. Walker, R. A. Leigh, A.J. Miller [1996] Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 93: 10510-10514). To show that these changes in cytosolic ion concentrations contributed to the decreased growth of K+-starved roots, we first measured whether similar changes occurred in cells of the growing zone. Triple-barreled ion-selective microelectrodes were used to measure cytosolic K+ activity and pH in cells 0.5 to 1.0 mm from the root tip. In plants growing from 7 to 21 d after germination under K+-replete conditions, the mean values did not change significantly, with values ranging from 80 to 84 mM for K+ and 7.3 to 7.4 for pH. However, in K+-starved plants (external [K+], 2 &mgr;M), the mean cytosolic K+ activity and pH had declined to 44 mM and 7.0, respectively, after 14 d. For whole roots, sap osmolality was always lower in K+-starved than in K+-replete plants, whereas elongation rate and dry matter accumulation were significantly decreased after 14 and 16 d of K+ starvation. The rate of protein synthesis in root tips did not change for K+-replete plants but declined significantly with age in K+-starved plants. Butyrate treatment decreased cytosolic pH and diminished the rate of protein synthesis in K+-replete roots. Procaine treatment of K+-starved roots gave an alkalinization of the cytosol and increased protein synthesis rate. These results show that changes in both cytosolic pH and K+ can be significant factors in inhibiting protein synthesis and root growth during K+ deficiency.

Abstract:Locomotion is typically studied either in continuous media where bodies and legs experience forces generated by the flowing medium, or on solid substrates dominated by friction. In the former, centralized coordination is believed to facilitate appropriate slipping through the medium for propulsion. In the latter, slip is often assumed minimal and thus avoided via decentralized controls. We discover in laboratory experiments that terrestrial locomotion of a meter scale multi-segmented/legged robophysical model resembles undulatory fluid swimming. Experiments varying waves of limb stepping and body bending reveal how these parameters result in effective terrestrial locomotion despite seemingly ineffective isotropic frictional contacts. Dissipation dominates over inertial effects in this macroscopic-scaled regime, resulting in essentially geometric locomotion akin to microscopic-scale swimming. Theoretical analysis demonstrates that the high-dimensional multi-segmented/legged dynamics can be simplified to a centralized low-dimensional model, which reveals an effective Resistive Force Theory with an acquired viscous drag anisotropy. We extend our low-dimensional, geometric analysis to illustrate how body undulation can aid performance in non-flat obstacle-rich terrains and also use the scheme to quantitatively model how body undulation affects performance of biological centipede locomotion (the desert centipede S. polymorpha) moving at relatively high speeds (~0.5 body lengths/sec). Our results could facilitate control of multilegged robots in complex terradynamic scenarios.
