Abstract:Automatic construction of high-resolution topographical maps, or determining the shape of man-made objects, targets, and obstacles for localization, identification, and/or recognition, is an important capability in the application of autonomous or intelligent underwater vehicles. In this paper, we investigate the application of underwater image models for the reconstruction of three-dimensional object shapes from the shading cues in two-dimensional optical images. We first present the results of a sensitivity analysis in support of a simplified model for a Lambertian surface illuminated by a point source in an attenuating medium, proposed in earlier work. We then generalize a closed-form solution for planar scenes, previously proposed for negligible source-camera baseline, to the case where the baseline may be increased to minimize backscatter effects. For curved surfaces, we propose two techniques based on different iterative updating strategies to recursively improve the recovered surface shape. We study the performance of various methods using synthetic data and real images acquired under different turbidity conditions.

Abstract:We study the problem of exploiting image shading for the recovery of an object's 3D shape in underwater. This requires the employment of image models that take into account shading effects due to the medium optical properties, as well as the surface shape and reflectance properties. A simplified image model that incorporates the attenuation of the incident light due to beam spreading, as well as medium absorption and forward-scattering of the incident and reflected light, have been employed to recover the orientation of a planar surface from image shading [14]. We investigate the application of this model for the recovery of the 3D shape of curved surfaces. To do this, we have implemented two methods based on the generalization of the shape from shading method of Tsai and Shah [12]. One iterative method involves recursive adjustment of the underwater image, based on the estimate of the target's 3D shape, to correct for the shading effects due to illumination attenuation. Convergence is reached when the recovered shape, after image shading correction for the medium effects, is consistent:with the object's reflectance map. A second method estimates the object's 3D shape directly from the underwater image shading model. Convergence properties and the accuracy of the solutions from the two methods are demonstrated using synthetic data. Results from experiments with the images of an underwater scene are presented to show performance with real data.

Abstract:This paper shows that accurate underwater 3D shape reconstruction is possible using a single camera, observing a target through a refractive interface. We provide unified reconstruction techniques for a variety of scenarios such as single static camera and moving refractive interface, single moving camera and static refractive interface, and single moving camera and moving refractive interface. In our basic setup, we assume that the refractive interface is planar, and simultaneously estimate the unknown transformations of the planar interface and the camera, and the unknown target shape using bundle adjustment. We also extend it to relax the planarity assumption, which enables us to use waves of the refractive interface for the reconstruction task. Experiments with real data show the superiority of our method to existing methods.

Abstract:The paper presents a novel three-dimensional shape acquisition and reconstruction method based on the well-known Archimedes equality between fluid displacement and the submerged volume. By repeatedly dipping a shape in liquid in different orientations and measuring its volume displacement, we generate the dip transform: a novel volumetric shape representation that characterizes the object's surface. The key feature of our method is that it employs fluid displacements as the shape sensor. Unlike optical sensors, the liquid has no line-of-sight requirements, it penetrates cavities and hidden parts of the object, as well as transparent and glossy materials, thus bypassing all visibility and optical limitations of conventional scanning devices. Our new scanning approach is implemented using a dipping robot arm and a bath of water, via which it measures the water elevation. We show results of reconstructing complex 3D shapes and evaluate the quality of the reconstruction with respect to the number of dips.
Real-time Underwater 3D Reconstruction Based on Monocular Image

Abstract:Real-time 3D reconstruction is essential for unmanned autonomous robot operation. In this work, we present a real-time reconstruction algorithm for underwater environments based on monocular image. First, the depth of the sparse features is calculated by performing feature optical flow tracking. Then, Delaunay triangulation is performed based on these features and the depth image is densified using triangular interpolation with the assumption that the seabed is close to the plane. Moreover, the densified depth image is used as the initial value, and the matching cost of the pixels in the current image and the neighboring images are computed according to the depth information. The SGM (semi-global matching) algorithm is used for cost aggregation to smooth and optimize the depth image, which can help to improve the accuracy of the depth image; finally, the current depth image is fused with the previous depth image using depth filter to further improve the accuracy and remove outliers. The experimental study shows that the algorithm can obtain better visualization on real-world underwater datasets. By leveraging the GPU, the algorithm can get real-time processing speed on the laptop.
Deformable Surface Recovery and Its Applications

Abstract:Recovering deformable surfaces is an interesting and beneficial research problem for computer vision and image analysis. An effective deformable surface recovery technique can be applied in a variety of applications for surface reconstruction, digital entertainment, medical imaging and Augmented Reality. While considerable research efforts have been devoted to deformable surface modeling and fitting, there are only few schemes available to tackle the deformable surface recovery problem efficiently. This thesis proposes a set of methods to effectively solve the 2D nonrigid shape recovery and 3D deformable surface tracking based on a robust progressive optimization scheme. The presented techniques are also applied to a variety of real-world applications. To tackle the 2D nonrigid shape recovery problem, this thesis first presents a novel progressive finite Newton optimization scheme, which is based on the local feature correspondences. The key of this approach is to formulate the nonrigid shape recovery as an unconstrained quadratic optimization problem which has a closed-form solution for a given set of observations. For the appearance-based method, a deformable Lucas-Kanade algorithm is proposed which triangulates the template image into small patches and constrains the deformation through the second order derivatives of the mesh vertices. It is formulated into a sparse regularized least squares problem which is able to reduce the computational cost and the memory requirement. The inverse compositional algorithm is applied to efficiently solve the optimization problem. Furthermore, we present a fusion approach to take advantage of both the appearance information and the local features. As for the 3D deformable surface recovery, the key challenge arises from the difficulty in estimating a large number of 3D shape parameters from noisy observations. In this thesis, 3D deformable surface tracking is formulated into an unconstrained quadratic problem that can be solved very efficiently by resolving a set of sparse linear equations. Furthermore, the robust progressive finite Newton method developed for nonrigid surface detection is employed to handle the large outliers. Without resorting to an explicit deformable mesh model, the nonrigid surface detection can be treated as a generic regression problem. A novel velocity coherence constraint is imposed on the deformable shape model to regularize the ill-posed optimization problem. To handle the large outliers, a progressive optimization scheme is employed. In addition to the methodologies studied and evaluated in computer vision, this thesis also investigates the nonrigid surface recovery in some real-world multimedia applications, such as Near-duplicate image retrieval and detection. In contrast to conventional approaches, the presented technique can recover an explicit mapping between two near-duplicate images with a few deformation parameters and find out the correct correspondences from noisy data effectively. To make the proposed technique applicable to large-scale applications, an effective multilevel ranking scheme is presented that filters out the irrelevant results in a coarse-to-fine manner. To overcome the extremely small training size challenge, a semi-supervised learning method is employed to improve the performance using unlabeled data. Extensive evaluations show that the presented method is clearly effective than conventional approaches.

Abstract:This paper describes a method to reconstruct the three-dimensional aspects of underwater objects using side-scan sonar images. The sonar images are segmented into three kinds of regions: echo, shadow and background. A two-dimensional intensity map is estimated from the echoes and a two-dimensional depth map is computed from the shadow information. With the transformation model, the final reconstruction merges these two maps to generate three-dimensional point cloud images of underwater objects.
Nonrigid Surface Modelling and Fast Recovery

Abstract:Modelling and recovering nonrigid surface are interesting research problem for image analysis and computer vision, which can be applied in a variety of applications. In this report, two different approaches to nonrigid surface recovery have been proposed. One is based on the appearance models, the other employs the local features. As for the appearance-based method, a two-stage scheme method is presented for online nonrigid surface recovery toward Augmented Reality (AR) applications using Active Appearance Models (AAMs). First, 3D shape models are constructed from AAMs offline, which do not involve processing of the 3D scan data. Based on the computed 3D shape models, an efficient online algorithm is proposed to estimate both 3D pose and non-rigid shape parameters via local bundle adjustment for building up point correspondences. This approach, without manual intervention, can recover the 3D non-rigid shape effectively from either real-time video sequences or single image. The recovered 3D pose parameters can be used for AR registrations. Furthermore, the facial feature can be tracked simultaneously, which is critical for many face related applications. Promising experimental results demonstrate the proposed scheme is effective for real-time AR applications. For the feature-based approach, a progressive finite Newton optimization scheme is proposed for the nonrigid surface detection problem, which is reduced to only solving a set of linear equations. The key of this method is to formulate the nonrigid surface detection as an unconstrained quadratic optimization problem which has a closedform solution for a given set of observations. Moreover, a progressive active-set selection scheme is employed, which takes advantage of the rank information of detected correspondences. Extensive experiments have been conducted for performance evaluation on various environments, whose promising results show that the proposed algorithm is more efficient and effective than the existing iterative methods.

Object Modeling from Underwater Forward-Scan Sonar Imagery with Sea-Surface Multipath

Abstract:We propose an optimization technique for 3-D underwater object modeling from 2-D forward-scan sonar images at known poses. A key contribution, for objects imaged in the proximity of the sea surface, is to resolve the multipath artifacts due to the air-water interface. Here, the object image formed by the direct target backscatter is almost always corrupted by the ghost and sometimes by the mirror components (generated by the multipath propagation). Assuming a planar air-water interface, we model, localize, and discard the corrupted object region within each view, thus avoiding the distortion of recovered 3-D shape. Additionally, complementary visual cues from the boundary of the mirror component, distinct at suitable sonar poses, are employed to enhance the 3-D modeling accuracy. The optimization is implemented as iterative shape adjustment by displacing the vertices of triangular patches in the 3-D surface mesh model, in order to minimize the discrepancy between the data and synthesized views of the 3-D object model. To this end, we first determine 2-D motion fields that align the object regions in the data and synthesized views, then calculate the 3-D motion of triangular patch centers, and finally the model vertices. The 3-D model is initialized with the solution of an earlier space carving method applied to the same data. The same parameters are applied in various experiments with 2 real data sets, mixed real-synthetic data set, and computer-generated data guided by general findings from a real experiment, to explore the impact of non-flat air-water interface. The results confirm the generation of a refined 3-D model in about half-dozen iterations.

Abstract:Measuring the three-dimensional (3D) deformation of submerged objects through different media with the stereo digital image correlation (stereo-DIC) method involves the refractive optical imaging problem where the non-linear transmission of light is induced by a change of medium density. The problem invalidates the underlying single viewpoint assumption of the perspective model in regular stereo-DIC, thereby resulting in erroneous measurements of 3D shape and deformation. In this work, we propose a refractive stereo-DIC method that overcomes the problem by considering light refraction in 3D reconstruction. We formulate a full refractive reconstruction geometry description based on Snell's law of flat refraction and the regular triangulation. This allows the true shape to be effectively reconstructed by tracing and establishing the refracted ray-paths based on the regular 3D reconstruction, without reformulating the camera model and image formation. The refractive stereo-DIC is finally established by integrating the refractive 3D reconstruction into the regular DIC framework for measuring accurate 3D shape and deformation of submerged objects. We experiment the proposed approach with underwater 3D shape and deformation measurements. Both results prove its feasibility and correctness, further heralding our approach as a flexible solution that could readily extend the stereo-DIC to fluid-immersed 3D deformation characterization.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel technique to reconstruct 3D surface of an underwater object using stereo images. Reconstructing the 3D surface of an underwater object is really a challenging task due to degraded quality of underwater images. There are various reason of quality degradation of underwater images i.e., non-uniform illumination of light on the surface of objects, scattering and absorption effects. Floating particles present in underwater produces Gaussian noise on the captured underwater images which degrades the quality of images. The degraded underwater images are preprocessed by applying homomorphic, wavelet denoising and anisotropic filtering sequentially. The uncalibrated rectification technique is applied to preprocessed images to rectify the left and right images. The rectified left and right image lies on a common plane. To find the correspondence points in a left and right images, we have applied dense stereo matching technique i.e., graph cut method. Finally, we estimate the depth of images using triangulation technique. The experimental result shows that the proposed method reconstruct 3D surface of underwater objects accurately using captured underwater stereo images.
WaterSplatting: Fast Underwater 3D Scene Reconstruction Using Gaussian Splatting

Abstract:The underwater 3D scene reconstruction is a challenging, yet interesting problem with applications ranging from naval robots to VR experiences. The problem was successfully tackled by fully volumetric NeRF-based methods which can model both the geometry and the medium (water). Unfortunately, these methods are slow to train and do not offer real-time rendering. More recently, 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) method offered a fast alternative to NeRFs. However, because it is an explicit method that renders only the geometry, it cannot render the medium and is therefore unsuited for underwater reconstruction. Therefore, we propose a novel approach that fuses volumetric rendering with 3DGS to handle underwater data effectively. Our method employs 3DGS for explicit geometry representation and a separate volumetric field (queried once per pixel) for capturing the scattering medium. This dual representation further allows the restoration of the scenes by removing the scattering medium. Our method outperforms state-of-the-art NeRF-based methods in rendering quality on the underwater SeaThru-NeRF dataset. Furthermore, it does so while offering real-time rendering performance, addressing the efficiency limitations of existing methods. Fusing Concurrent Orthogonal Wide-aperture Sonar Images for Dense Underwater 3D Reconstruction

Abstract:We propose a novel approach to handling the ambiguity in elevation angle associated with the observations of a forward looking multi-beam imaging sonar, and the challenges it poses for performing an accurate 3D reconstruction. We utilize a pair of sonars with orthogonal axes of uncertainty to independently observe the same points in the environment from two different perspectives, and associate these observations. Using these concurrent observations, we can create a dense, fully defined point cloud at every time-step to aid in reconstructing the 3D geometry of underwater scenes. We will evaluate our method in the context of the current state of the art, for which strong assumptions on object geometry limit applicability to generalized 3D scenes. We will discuss results from laboratory tests that quantitatively benchmark our algorithm's reconstruction capabilities, and results from a real-world, tidal river basin which qualitatively demonstrate our ability to reconstruct a cluttered field of underwater objects.

Abstract:Photometric stereo is a widely used optical 3-D reconstruction method, which has advantages for high-resolution and well-detailed 3-D reconstruction even in weak texture regions. However, in underwater photometric stereo, the light refraction and attenuation using the camera and point light sources usually result in significant errors in shape recovery. In this article, we present a novel solution to address these challenges for improving the performance of underwater photometric stereo by combining it with underwater laser triangulation. First, we employ underwater laser triangulation as references to correct the global surface-shape distortion caused by nonuniform close-range illumination. Second, we propose to use an underwater camera refractive model to eliminate nonlinear refraction distortion. Third, we build a device implementing the proposed method for 3-D seabed reconstruction in on-site sea trials. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach is able to produce accurate 3-D reconstruction results in the underwater environment.

Abstract:A new underwater 3D scanning device based on structured illumination and designed for continuous capture of object data in motion for deep sea inspection applications is introduced. The sensor permanently captures 3D data of the inspected surface and generates a 3D surface model in real time. Sensor velocities up to 0.7 m/s are directly compensated while capturing camera images for the 3D reconstruction pipeline. The accuracy results of static measurements of special specimens in a water basin with clear water show the high accuracy potential of the scanner in the sub-millimeter range. Measurement examples with a moving sensor show the significance of the proposed motion compensation and the ability to generate a 3D model by merging individual scans. Future application tests in offshore environments will show the practical potential of the sensor for the desired inspection tasks.
3D Surface Reconstruction in the Wild by Deforming Shape Priors from Synthetic Data

Abstract:Reconstructing the underlying 3D surface of an object from a single image is a challenging problem that has received extensive attention from the computer vision community. Many learning-based approaches tackle this problem by learning a 3D shape prior from either ground truth 3D data or multi-view observations. To achieve state-of-the-art results, these methods assume that the objects are specified with respect to a fixed canonical coordinate frame, where instances of the same category are perfectly aligned. In this work, we present a new method for joint category-specific 3D reconstruction and object pose estimation from a single image. We show that one can leverage shape priors learned on purely synthetic 3D data together with a point cloud pose canonicalization method to achieve high-quality 3D reconstruction in the wild. Given a single depth image at test time, we first transform this partial point cloud into a learned canonical frame. Then, we use a neural deformation field to reconstruct the 3D surface of the object. Finally, we jointly optimize object pose and 3D shape to fit the partial depth observation. Our approach achieves state-of-the-art reconstruction performance across several real-world datasets, even when trained only on synthetic data. We further show that our method generalizes to different input modalities, from dense depth images to sparse and noisy LIDAR scans.

Abstract:Recovering 3D geometry of underwater scenes is challenging because of non-linear refraction of light at the water-air interface caused by the camera housing. We present a light field-based approach that leverages properties of angular samples for high-quality underwater 3D reconstruction from a single viewpoint. Specifically, we resample the light field image to angular patches. As underwater scenes exhibit weak view-dependent specularity, an angular patch tends to have uniform intensity when sampled at the correct depth. We thus impose this angular uniformity as a constraint for depth estimation. For efficient angular resampling, we design a fast approximation algorithm based on multivariate polynomial regression to approximate nonlinear refraction paths. We further develop a light field calibration algorithm that estimates the water-air interface geometry along with the camera parameters. Comprehensive experiments on synthetic and real data show our method produces state-of-the-art reconstruction on static and dynamic underwater scenes.

Predictive 3D Sonar Mapping of Underwater Environments via Object-specific Bayesian Inference

Abstract:Recent work has achieved dense 3D reconstruction with wide-aperture imaging sonar using a stereo pair of orthogonally oriented sonars. This allows each sonar to observe a spatial dimension that the other is missing, without requiring any prior assumptions about scene geometry. However, this is achieved only in a small region with overlapping fields-of-view, leaving large regions of sonar image observations with an unknown elevation angle. Our work aims to achieve large-scale 3D reconstruction more efficiently using this sensor arrangement. We propose dividing the world into semantic classes to exploit the presence of repeating structures in the subsea environment. We use a Bayesian inference framework to build an understanding of each object class's geometry when 3D information is available from the orthogonal sonar fusion system, and when the elevation angle of our returns is unknown, our framework is used to infer unknown 3D structure. We quantitatively validate our method in a simulation and use data collected from a real outdoor littoral environment to demonstrate the efficacy of our framework in the field. Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new three-dimensional (3-D) measurement method of objects in unknown liquid with a stereo vision system. When applying vision sensors to measuring objects in liquid, light refraction is an important problem. Therefore, we estimate refractive indices of unknown liquids by using images of water surface, restore images that are free from refractive effects of the light, and measure 3-D shapes of objects in liquids in consideration of refractive effects. The effectiveness of the proposed method is shown through experiments.
