Abstract:From the commencement of this century, the emerging fluorescent carbon dots (CDs)—the new member of the carbonaceous nanomaterial family—have stimulated significant attention worldwide due to their inimitable advantages such as non-blinking strong fluorescence emission, low cost, facile synthesis methods, good physicochemical properties, good water solubility, low toxicity, high chemical and photo stability, and tunable photoluminescence. CDs have provided a promising platform for biological, environmental, and energy-related applications such as bioimaging, biosensing, medical diagnosis, catalysis, multicolor light-emitting diode production, phototherapy, drug and gene delivery, food safety, and energy conversion owing to their innovative and fascinating multifunctional properties together with excellent biocompatibility and environmental friendliness. This mini review aims to present a comprehensive framework of the unique advantages and up-to-date advanced biomedical applications of CDs to date, and to place special emphasis on the recent progress in phototherapy, and drug and gene delivery. Besides the applications, an overview of CDs along with some important methodologies of synthesis are also discussed herewith. Lastly, the key issues to be challenged and perspectives for the future development of CDs in the field of biomedical sector are highlighted in this article which will help give valuable insights into new research directions.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) are a new type of carbon nanomaterial that have unique physical and chemical properties, good biocompatibility, low toxicity, and easy surface functionalization, making them widely used in biological imaging, environmental monitoring, chemical analysis, targeted drug delivery, disease diagnosis, therapy, etc. In this review, our content is mainly divided into four parts. In the first part, we focused on the preparation methods of CDs, including arc discharge, laser ablation, electrochemical oxidation, chemical oxidation, combustion, hydrothermal/solvent thermal, microwave, template, method etc. Next, we summarized methods of CD modification, including heteroatom doping and surface functionalization. Then, we discussed the optical properties of CDs (ultraviolet absorption, photoluminescence, up-conversion fluorescence, etc.). Lastly, we reviewed the common applications of CDs in biomedicine from the aspects of in vivo and in vitro imaging, sensors, drug delivery, cancer theranostics, etc. Furthermore, we also discussed the existing problems and the future development direction of CDs.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) are carbon‐based nanomaterials that have garnered immense interest due to their exceptional photophysical and optoelectronic properties. They have been employed extensively for biomedical imaging and phototherapy due to their superb water dispersibility, low toxicity, outstanding biocompatibility, and exceptional tissue permeability. This review summarizes the luminescence mechanism of CDs. The modification in CDs via various doping routes is comprehensively reviewed, and the effect of such alterations on their photophysical properties, such as photoluminescence (PL), absorbance, and reactive oxygen species generation ability, is also highlighted. This review also aims to summarize the role of CDs in cellular imaging and fluorescence lifetime imaging for cellular metabolism. Subsequently, recent advancements and the future prospects of CDs as nanotheranostic agents have been discussed. Herein, we have discussed the role of CDs in photothermal, photodynamic, and synergistic therapy of anticancer, antiviral, and antibacterial applications. The overall summary of the review highlights the future prospects of CD‐based research in bioimaging and biomedicine.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs), comprising crystalline graphitized carbon cores and polymer surface groups, are currently attracting a lot of interest in biological fields owing to their fluorescent properties, high photostability, biocompatibility and low toxicity. In addition, the easy preparation and functionalization of CDs stimulate the development of CDs‐based composite materials with specific functions. Presently, the biological applications of CDs are growing at a remarkable speed, justifying the need for up‐to‐date review articles that capture recent progress in this blossoming field. In this review, breakthroughs in the synthesis, modification, optical properties, toxicology and biocatalytic platforms of CDs are described. Further, recent research related to bioimaging, biosensing, drug delivery, antibacterial, anticancer (photothermal therapy, photodynamic therapy and synergistic therapy) and antiviral therapies involving CDs are discussed in detail. Finally, a perspective on the prospects and challenges of CDs in the fields of biomedicine and biotechnology is provided. The development and application of new functional nanomaterials have always been the focus of various research fields. Abstract:As an emerging fluorescent nanomaterial, carbon dots (CDs) exhibit many attractive physicochemical features, including excellent photoluminescence properties, good biocompatibility, low toxicity and the ability to maintain the unique properties of the raw material. Therefore, CDs have been intensively pursued for a wide range of applications, such as bioimaging, drug delivery, biosensors and antibacterial agents. In this review, we systematically summarize the synthesis methods of these CDs, their photoluminescence mechanisms, and the approaches for enhancing their fluorescence properties. Particularly, we summarize the recent research on the synthesis of CDs from drug molecules as raw materials and introduce the representative application aspects of these fascinating CDs. Finally, we look into the future direction of CDs in the biomedical field and discuss the challenges encountered in the current development.

This review article comprehensively summarizes the nanostructures, surface chemistry, optical properties, and synthesis methods of CDs, including electrochemical oxidation, arc discharge, laser ablation, chemical oxidation, ultrasonic treatment, hydrothermal/solvothermal processes, microwave-assisted techniques, pyrolysis, and hybrid synthesis routes. With their low toxicity and good biocompatibility, CDs are highly desirable for biomedical applications. The review highlights recent significant advances in properties such as ultraviolet–visible absorption and band gap, quantum yield, photoluminescence, phosphorescence, photostability, photobleaching, and dispersibility. Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) are usually smaller than 10 nm in size, and are meticulously formulated and recently introduced nanomaterials, among the other types of carbon-based nanomaterials. They have gained significant attention and an incredible interest in the field of nanotechnology and biomedical science, which is merely due to their considerable and exclusive attributes; including their enhanced electron transferability, photobleaching and photo-blinking effects, high photoluminescent quantum yield, fluorescence property, resistance to photo-decomposition, increased electrocatalytic activity, good aqueous solubility, excellent biocompatibility, long-term chemical stability, cost-effectiveness, negligible toxicity, and acquaintance of large effective surface area-to-volume ratio. CDs can be readily functionalized owing to the abundant functional groups on their surfaces, and they also exhibit remarkable sensing features such as specific, selective, and multiplex detectability. In addition, the physico-chemical characteristics of CDs can be easily tunable based on their intended usage or application. In this comprehensive review article, we mainly discuss the classification of CDs, their ideal properties, their general synthesis approaches, and primary characterization techniques. Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs), as a new kind of fluorescent nanomaterials, show great potential for application in several fields due to their unique nano-size effect, easy surface functionalization, controllable photoluminescence, and excellent biocompatibility. Conventional preparation methods for CDs typically involve top-down and bottom-up approaches. Doping is a major step forward in CDs design methodology. Chemical doping includes both non-metal and metal doping, in which non-metal doping is an effective strategy for modulating the fluorescence properties of CDs and improving photocatalytic performance in several areas. In recent years, Metal-doped CDs have aroused the interest of academics as a promising nano-doping technique. This approach has led to improvements in the physicochemical and optical properties of CDs by altering their electron density distribution and bandgap capacity. Additionally, the issues of metal toxicity and utilization have been addressed to a large extent. In this review, we categorize metals into two major groups: transition group metals and rare-earth group metals, and an overview of recent advances in biomedical applications of these two categories, respectively. Meanwhile, the prospects and the challenges of metal-doped CDs for biomedical applications are reviewed and concluded. The aim of this paper is to break through the existing deficiencies of metal-doped CDs and fully exploit their potential. I believe that this review will broaden the insight into the synthesis and biomedical applications of metal-doped CDs.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) possess various properties and are a rich treasure trove for new discoveries. Through refined synthesizing strategies, CDs stand a chance to guide significant development in biomedical applications. Various biomedical applications are elaborated from three aspects: diagnosis, therapy, and theranostic. Challenges and future directions of CDs are also presented. Designing suitable nanomaterials is an ideal strategy to enable early diagnosis and effective treatment of diseases. Carbon dots (CDs) are luminescent carbonaceous nanoparticles that have attracted considerable attention. Through facile synthesis, they process properties including tunable light emission, low toxicity, and light energy transformation, leading to diverse applications as optically functional materials in biomedical fields. Recently, their potentials have been further explored, such as enzyme‐like activity and ability to promote osteogenic differentiation. Through refined synthesizing strategies carbon dots, a rich treasure trove for new discoveries, stand a chance to guide significant development in biomedical applications. In this review, the authors start with a brief introduction to CDs. By presenting mechanisms and examples, the authors focus on how they can be used in diagnosing and treating diseases, including bioimaging failure of tissues and cells, biosensing various pathogenic factors and biomarkers, tissue defect repair, anti‐inflammation, antibacterial and antiviral, and novel oncology treatment. The introduction of the application of integrated diagnosis and treatment follows closely behind. Furthermore, the challenges and future directions of CDs are discussed. Changes in Twelve Homoeologous Genomic Regions in Soybean following Three Rounds of Polyploidy[W]

Abstract:This work examines the changes that have occurred in 12 homoeologous genomic regions from three rounds of polyploidy that contributed to the current soybean genome. It finds that genes in networks with a high level of connectivity are more strongly conserved than those with low connectivity. With the advent of high-throughput sequencing, the availability of genomic sequence for comparative genomics is increasing exponentially. Numerous completed plant genome sequences enable characterization of patterns of the retention and evolution of genes within gene families due to multiple polyploidy events, gene loss and fractionation, and differential evolutionary pressures over time and across different gene families. In this report, we trace the changes that have occurred in 12 surviving homoeologous genomic regions from three rounds of polyploidy that contributed to the current Glycine max genome: a genome triplication before the origin of the rosids (~130 to 240 million years ago), a genome duplication early in the legumes (~58 million years ago), and a duplication in the Glycine lineage (~13 million years ago). Patterns of gene retention following the genome triplication event generally support predictions of the Gene Balance Hypothesis. Finally, we find that genes in networks with a high level of connectivity are more strongly conserved than those with low connectivity and that the enrichment of these highly connected genes in the 12 highly conserved homoeologous segments may in part explain their retention over more than 100 million years and repeated polyploidy events.

Abstract:As a sort of fluorescent carbon nanomaterial with a particle size of less than 10 nm, carbon dots (CDs) have their own merits of good dispersibility in water, stable optical properties, strong chemical inertness, stable optical properties, and good biosecurity. These excellent peculiarities facilitated them like sensing, imaging, medicine, catalysis, and optoelectronics, making them a new star in the field of nanotechnology. In particular, the development of CDs in the fields of chemical probes, imaging, cancer therapy, antibacterial and drug delivery has become a hot topic in current research. Although the biomedical applications in CDs have been demonstrated in many research articles, a systematic summary of their role in biomedical applications is scarce. In this review, we introduced the basic information of CDs in detail, including synthesis approaches of CDs as well as their favorable properties including photoluminescence and low cytotoxicity. Subsequently, the application of CDs in the field of biomedicine was emphasized. Finally, the main challenges and research prospects of CDs in this field were proposed, which might provide some detailed information in designing new CDs in this promising biomedical field.

Abstract:<p>As a new type of nanomaterial, carbon dots (CDs) have been recognized as a versatile nanoplatform with enormous potential for biomedical and optoelectronic applications because of low cytotoxicity, photostability, biocompatibility and versatility in addition to their tunable photoluminescence. In this review, we aim at updating the latest research on preparation, optoelectronic and chemical properties of CDs as well as their biomedical and optoelectronic applications. We highlight the applications of CDs for stem cell imaging, cell nucleus imaging, two‐photon fluorescence imaging, tumor diagnosis and therapy and their optoelectronic applications including light‐emitting diodes (LEDs), solar cells and electrocatalysis. Furthermore, we also discuss current challenges and breakthroughs on machine‐learning‐driven synthesis of CDs as well as nucleic acid detection with an eye towards the future. Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) have garnered significant interest for their potential use in multiple applications due to their size, fluorescent properties, high photostability, low toxicity and biocompatibility. CDs can be tailored for specific needs, as they can be synthesized with diverse precursors and techniques for functionalization. Since the applications of CDs are rapidly expanding, this review highlights recent developments in this burgeoning field. Specifically, we describe advances in CD synthesis tailored for applications that include pH and temperature sensing, biochemical analysis, and bioimaging. We also discuss various challenges and practical solutions that will drive CD-based research forward. Challenges include the lack of standardized synthesis and purification methods for CDs, the lack of clarity regarding their mechanism of action, and procedural flaws in their applications. In conclusion, we provide recommendations for collaboration among disciplines to bridge existing knowledge gaps and address the key challenges required for CDs to be fully commercialized.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) represent a recently emerged class of luminescent materials with a great potential for biomedical theranostics, and there are a lot of efforts to shift their absorption and emission toward deep-red (DR) to near-infrared (NIR) region falling in the biological transparency window. This review offers comprehensive insights into the synthesis strategies aimed to achieve this goal, and the current approaches of modulating the optical properties of CDs over the DR to NIR region. The underlying mechanisms of their absorption, photoluminescence, and chemiluminescence, as well as the related photophysical processes of photothermal conversion and formation of reactive oxygen species are considered. The already available biomedical applications of CDs, such as in the photoacoustic imaging and photothermal therapy, photodynamic therapy, and their use as bioimaging agents and drug carriers are then shortly summarized.

Abstract:Doping fluorescent carbon dots (DFCDs) with heteroatoms have recently become of great interest compared to traditional fluorescent materials because it provides a feasible and new way to tune the intrinsic properties of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and graphene quantum dots (GQDs) to achieve new applications for them in different fields. Since the first report on nitrogen (N) doped GQDs in 2012, more effort is being focused on exploring different procedures for making new types of DFCDs with different heteroatoms. This mini review will summarize recent research progress on DFCDs. It first reviews various doping categories achieved up to now, looking back on the synthesis method and comparing the differences in synthesis approaches between the DFCDs and the undoped ones. Then it focuses on the advances on how the doping affects the optical properties, especially DFCDs doped with N, which have been investigated the most. Finally, different applications of DFCDs involving bio-imaging, sensing, catalysis and photoelectronic devices will be discussed. This review will give new insights into how to use different synthetic methods for tuning the structure of DFCDs, understanding the correlation between the doping and properties, and achieving new applications.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) are novel zero-dimensional carbonaceous nanomaterial, and they are featured with an attractive combination of physical, chemical, and biomedical properties including wide absorption spectrum, tunable fluorescence, excellent water solubility, outstanding photostability, and biocompatibility, which leads to their diverse applications as optically functional materials in various fields, e.g., fluorescence sensing, bioimaging, and drug delivery. Recently, it was revealed that CDs could be used as an effective photosensitizer to generate reactive oxygen species under light excitation, and/or a photothermal agent to convert light energy into heat, which enable them to be applied in photodynamic therapy or photothermal therapy for cancer treatment. In this review, we summarize the latest progress of research on CDs in phototherapy, including their use as nanocarriers for organic phototherapy agents, and highlight the strategies which are adopted to improve the therapeutic efficacy of CDs-based phototheranostics. Furthermore, we also discuss the challenges and prospects of the CDs-based phototheranostics towards clinical applications. We hope this review will provide critical insights to inspire new exciting discoveries on CDs from both fundamental and practical views so as to prompt their advances in the phototherapy.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) exhibit great potential in medicinal chemistry due to its excellent optical properties, biocompatibility and scalability, which have attracted significant interest. Based on their specific synthesis and modification, this review provided an overview of the evolution of the synthesis of CDs and reviewed the discovery and development of their optical properties. This review examines recent advances of CDs in medicinal chemistry, with a particular focus on the use of CDs as drugs and carriers for photodynamic and photothermal therapies in the field of neurological disorders, cancer, bacterial, viral, and further in combination with imaging for diagnostic and therapeutic integration. Finally, this review addresses the challenges and limitations of CDs in medicinal chemistry. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the development process of CDs and their applications in various aspects of medicinal chemistry, thereby offers insights to the development of CDs in the field of medicinal chemistry.
