Abstract:Surface elastic instabilities, such as wrinkling and creasing, can enable a convenient strategy to impart reversible patterned topography to a surface. Here the classic system of a stiff layer on a soft substrate is focused, which famously produces parallel harmonic wrinkles at modest uniaxial compression that period‐double repeatedly at higher compressions and ultimately evolve into deep folds and creases. By introducing micrometer‐scale planar Bravais lattice holes to spatially pattern the substrate, these instabilities are guided into a wide variety of different patterns, including wrinkling in parallel bands and star shape bands, and radically reduce the threshold compression. The experimental patterns and thresholds are enabled to understand by considering a simple plane‐strain model for the patterned substrate‐deformation, decorated by wrinkling on the stiff surface layer. The experiments also show localized wrinkle‐crease transitions at modest compression, yielding a hierarchical surface with different generations of instability mixed together. By varying the geometrical inputs, control over the stepwise evolution of surface morphologies is demonstrated. These results demonstrate considerable control over both the patterns and threshold of the surface elastic instabilities, and have relevance to many emerging applications of morphing surfaces, including in wearable/flexible electronics, biomedical systems, and optical devices.

Abstract:AbstractFunctional soft materials, especially hydrogels have been widely developed to achieve various soft structures and machines. However, synthetic hydrogels commonly show formula‐dependent mechanical properties to fulfill the requirements of mechanical elasticity, stiffness, toughness, and tearing‐resistance for adapting to complex application scenario. Inspired by heterostructures and materials found in nature such as leaves and insect wings, a sequential photopolymerization process combined with site‐selective patterning exposure is reported to prepare programmable hydrogels with locally heterogeneous reinforcement skeletons, i.e., interpenetrating double networks. The heterogeneous interface between soft matrices and stiff skeletons is seamlessly interlocked through strong multiple hydrogen bonds induced by phase transition. By harnessing the size, shape, and distribution of the patterned stiff skeletons, a wide range of mechanical properties of hydrogels including modulus (0.32–5.92 MPa), toughness (0.15–18 kJ m−2), dissipated energy (1–100 kJ m−3), impact resistance, and mechanical anisotropy can be readily sculpted within one material system without needing design and optimization of the complex and elusive material formulation on demand. It is believed that this simple yet powerful method relying on heterogenous patterning would guide the development of functional hydrogel materials with programmable mechanical properties toward potential engineering applications, such as damping and flexible circuits.
Reconfigurable and Orthogonal Stiffness‐structure Patterning of Dynamically Crosslinked Amphigels

Abstract:Abstract Patterning diversified properties and surface structure of polymer materials are of great importance toward their potential in biology, optics, and electronics. However, achieving both the patternability of stiffness and microstructure in a reconfigurable manner remains challenging. Here, we prepare amphigels crosslinked by dynamic disulfide bonds, which can be reversibly swollen by immiscible water or liquid paraffin. In the paraffingel form, the materials exhibited a high modulus of 130 MPa due to densified hydrogen bonds. Whereas swollen by water, the modulus fell over two orders of magnitude owing to the destruction of the hydrogen bonds. Via regionalized swelling of the solvents, well‐controlled and rewritable soft/stiff mechanical patterns can be created. On the other hand, the dynamic exchange of the disulfide crosslinking enables mechanophoto patterning to fabricate sophisticated macrogeometries and microstructures. The reconfigurable stiffness‐structure patterning can be manipulated orthogonally, which will create more application opportunities beyond conventional hydrogels and organogels.
Shape-memory Effect by Sequential Coupling of Functions over Different Length Scales in an Architectured Hydrogel.

Abstract:The integration of functions in materials in order to gain macroscopic effects in response to environmental changes is an ongoing challenge in material science. Here, functions on different hierarchical levels are sequentially linked to translate a pH-triggered conformational transition from the molecular to the macroscopic level to induce directed movements in hydrogels. When the pH is increased, lysine-rich peptide molecules change their conformation into a beta-hairpin structure because of the reduced electrostatic repulsion among the deprotonated amino groups. Coupled to this conformation change is the capability of the beta-hairpin motifs to subsequently assemble into aggregates acting as reversible cross links, which are used as controlling units to fix a temporary macroscopic shape. A structural function implemented into the hydrogel by a microporous architecture-enabled nondisruptive deformation upon compression by buckling of pore walls and their elastic recovery. Coupled to this structural function is the capability of the porous material to enhance the diffusion of ions into the hydrogel and to keep the dimension of the macroscopic systems almost constant when the additional cross-links are formed or cleaved as it limits the dimensional change of the pore walls. Covalent cross-linking of the hydrogel into a polymer network acted as gear shift to ensure translation of the function on the molecular level to the macroscopic dimension. In this way, the information of a directed shape-shift can be programmed into the material by mechanical deformation and pH-dependent formation of temporary net points. The information could be read out by lowering the pH. The peptides reverted back into their original random coil conformation and the porous polymer network could recover from the previously applied elastic deformation. The level of multifunctionality of the hydrogels can be increased by implementation of additional orthogonal functions such as antimicrobicity by proper selection of multifunctional peptides, which could enable sophisticated biomedical devices.
Three-dimensional Shape Transformations of Hydrogel Sheets Induced by Small-Scale Modulation of Internal Stresses

Abstract:Although Nature has always been a common source of inspiration in the development of artificial materials, only recently has the ability of man-made materials to produce complex three-dimensional (3D) structures from two-dimensional sheets been explored. Here we present a new approach to the self-shaping of soft matter that mimics fibrous plant tissues by exploiting small-scale variations in the internal stresses to form three-dimensional morphologies. We design single-layer hydrogel sheets with chemically distinct, fibre-like regions that exhibit differential shrinkage and elastic moduli under the application of external stimulus. Using a planar-to-helical three-dimensional shape transformation as an example, we explore the relation between the internal architecture of the sheets and their transition to cylindrical and conical helices with specific structural characteristics. The ability to engineer multiple three-dimensional shape transformations determined by small-scale patterns in a hydrogel sheet represents a promising step in the development of programmable soft matter.
Geometric and Edge Effects on Swelling-Induced Ordered Structure Formation in Polyelectrolyte Hydrogels

Abstract:In this paper, we developed several kinds of ordered structures in hydrogels with different geometries and sizes by harnessing heterogeneous swelling induced mechanical instability, i.e., surface creasing, which leads to molecular orientations along the tensile direction. These hydrogels were synthesized by polymerization of a cationic monomer, N-[3-(N,N-dimethylamino)propyl] acrylamide methyl chloride quaternary (DMAPAA-Q) and a chemical cross-linker, in the presence of a small amount of the semirigid polyanion, poly(2,2'-disulfonyl-4,4'-benzidine terephthalamide) (PBDT), as dopant. During the swelling process of as-prepared gels, surface creasing occurs and induces formation of a lattice-like periodic ordered structure, which is maintained in the swollen gels due to the formation of strong polyion complex. Besides this structure formed at the central part of gel sheets, PBDTs align parallel to the gel boundary at the edge of gels with a cuboid, disk, or ring shape. The size of the two regions with different structures and the size of each unit of lattice-like pattern are related to the geometry and size of the gels. The formation of different ordered structures was found due to the different mechanical instabilities at different parts of the gel during the heterogeneous swelling. This work presenting the creation of ordered structures in hydrogels by tuning the mechanical instability will pave the way to develop other functional structured materials and merit revealing the formation mechanism of ordered structures in soft biotissues during the nonequilibrium growth.
Site‐Specific Pre‐Swelling‐Directed Morphing Structures of Patterned Hydrogels

Abstract:Morphing materials have promising applications in various fields, yet how to program the self-shaping process for specific configurations remains a challenge. Herein we show a versatile approach to control the buckling of individual domains and thus the outcome configurations of planar-patterned hydrogels. By photolithography, high-swelling disc gels were positioned in a non-swelling gel sheet; the swelling mismatch resulted in out-of-plain buckling of the disc gels. To locally control the buckling direction, masks with holes were used to guide site-specific swelling of the high-swelling gel under the holes, which built a transient through-thickness gradient and thus directed the buckling during the subsequent unmasked swelling process. Therefore, various configurations of an identical patterned hydrogel can be programmed by the pre-swelling step with different masks to encode the buckling directions of separate domains.
Cooperative Deformations of Periodically Patterned Hydrogels

Abstract:Nature has shown elegant paradigms of smart deformation, which inspired biomimetic systems with controllable bending, folding, and twisting that are significant for the development of soft electronics and actuators. Complex deformations are usually realized by additively incorporating typical structures in selective domains with little interaction. We demonstrate the cooperative deformations of periodically patterned hydrogel sheets, in which neighboring domains mutually interact and cooperatively deform. Nonswelling disc gels are periodically positioned in a high-swelling gel. During the swelling process, the compartmentalized high-swelling gel alternately bends upward or downward to relieve the in-plane compression, but the overall integrated structure remains flat. The synergy between the elastic mismatch and the geometric periodicity selects the outcome pattern. Both experiment and modeling show that various types of cooperative deformation can be achieved by tuning the pattern geometry and gel properties. Different responsive polymers can also be patterned in one composite gel. Under stimulation, reversible transformations between different cooperative deformations are realized. The principle of cooperative deformation should be applicable to other materials, and the patterns can be miniaturized to the micrometer- or nanometer-scale level, providing the morphing materials with advanced functionalities for applications in various fields.

Abstract:Biomacromolecules usually form complex superstructures in natural biotissues, such as different alignments of collagen fibres in articular cartilages, for multifunctionalities. Inspired by nature, there are efforts towards developing multiscale ordered structures in hydrogels (recognized as one of the best candidates of soft biotissues). However, creating complex superstructures in gels are hardly realized because of the absence of effective approaches to control the localized molecular orientation. Here we introduce a method to create various superstructures of rigid polyanions in polycationic hydrogels. The control of localized orientation of rigid molecules, which are sensitive to the internal stress field of the gel, is achieved by tuning the swelling mismatch between masked and unmasked regions of the photolithographic patterned gel. Furthermore, we develop a double network structure to toughen the hydrogels with programmed superstructures, which deform reversibly under large strain. This work presents a promising pathway to develop superstructures in hydrogels and should shed light on designing biomimetic materials with intricate molecular alignments.
Swelling-induced pattern transformations of periodic hydrogels -- from the wrinkling of internal surfaces to the buckling of thin films

Abstract:We investigate pattern transformations of periodic hydrogel systems that are triggered by swelling-induced structural instabilities. The types of microstructures considered in the present work include single-phase and two-phase voided hydrogel structures as well as reinforced hydrogel thin films. While the observed transformations of the single-phase structures show good agreement with experimental findings, the two-phase materials provide novel patterns associated with wrinkling of internal surfaces. Furthermore, an extensive parametric study on the reinforced hydrogel thin films reveals new opportunities for the design of complex out-of-plane surface modes caused by swelling-induced instabilities. Next to the mentioned buckling-type instabilities, we encountered the development of micro-creases at the internal surfaces of periodic media before the loss of strong ellipticity of effective moduli.

Abstract:Soft materials undergoing shape transformations in response to changes in ambient environment have potential applications in tissue engineering, robotics and biosensing. Generally, stimulus-responsive materials acquire two stable shapes corresponding to the "on" and "off" states of the external trigger. Here, we report a simple, yet versatile approach to induce multiple shape transformations of a planar hydrogel sheet, each triggered by a particular, well-defined external stimulus. The approach is based on the integration of small-scale multiple polymer components with distinct compositions in the composite gel sheet. In response to different stimuli, the structural components undergo differential swelling or shrinkage, which creates internal stresses within the composite hydrogel sheet and transforms its shape in a specific manner.

Abstract:The mechanical interactions among integrated cellular structures in soft tissues dictate the mechanical behaviors and morphogenetic deformations observed in living organisms. However, replicating these multifaceted attributes in synthetic soft materials remains a challenge. In this work, we develop a smart hydrogel system featuring engineered stiff cellular patterns that induce strain-driven heterogeneous subdomains within the hydrogel film. These subdomains arise from the distinct mechanical responses of the pattern and film domains under applied mechanical forces. Unlike previous studies that incorporate reinforced inclusions into soft matrices to tailor material properties, our method manipulates the localization, integration, and interaction of these subdomain building blocks within the soft film. This enables extensive tuning of both local and global behaviors. Notably, we introduce a subdomain-interface mechanism that allows for the concurrent customization and decoupling of mechanical properties and shape transformations within a single material system—an achievement rarely accomplished with current synthetic soft materials. Additionally, our use of in-situ imaging characterizations, including full-field strain mapping via digital imaging correlation and reciprocal-space patterns through fast Fourier transform analysis of real-space pattern domains, provides rapid real-time monitoring tools to uncover the underlying principles governing tailored multiscale heterogeneities and intricate behaviors.

Abstract:Autonomous shape transformation is key in developing high-performance soft robotics technology; the search for pronounced actuation mechanisms is an ongoing mission. Here, we present the programmable shape morphing of a three-dimensional (3D) curved gel structure by harnessing multimode mechanical instabilities during free swelling. First of all, the coupling of buckling and creasing occurs at the dedicated region of the gel structure, which is attributed to the edge and surface instabilities resulted from structure-defined spatial nonuniformity of swelling. The subsequent developments of post-buckling morphologies and crease patterns collaboratively drive the structural transformation of the gel part from the "open" state to the "closed" state, thus realizing the function of gripping. By utilizing the multi-stimuli-responsive nature of the hydrogel, we recover the swollen gel structure to its initial state, enabling reproducible and cyclic shape evolution. Finite Deformation Mechanics In Buckled Thin Films On Compliant Supports

Abstract:We present detailed experimental and theoretical studies of the mechanics of thin buckled films on compliant substrates. In particular, accurate measurements of the wavelengths and amplitudes in structures that consist of thin, single-crystal ribbons of silicon covalently bonded to elastomeric substrates of poly(dimethylsiloxane) reveal responses that include wavelengths that change in an approximately linear fashion with strain in the substrate, for all values of strain above the critical strain for buckling. Theoretical reexamination of this system yields analytical models that can explain these and other experimental observations at a quantitative level. We show that the resulting mechanics has many features in common with that of a simple accordion bellows. These results have relevance to the many emerging applications of controlled buckling structures in stretchable electronics, microelectromechanical systems, thin-film metrology, optical devices, and others.

Abstract:Mechanical properties of hydrogels are crucial to emerging devices and machines for wearables, robotics and energy harvesters. Various polymer network architectures and interactions have been explored for achieving specific mechanical characteristics, however, extreme mechanical property tuning of single-composition hydrogel material and deployment in integrated devices remain challenging. Here, we introduce a macromolecule conformational shaping strategy that enables mechanical programming of polymorphic hydrogel fiber based devices. Conformation of the single-composition polyelectrolyte macromolecule is controlled to evolve from coiling to extending states via a pH-dependent antisolvent phase separation process. The resulting structured hydrogel microfibers reveal extreme mechanical integrity, including modulus spanning four orders of magnitude, brittleness to ultrastretchability, and plasticity to anelasticity and elasticity. Our approach yields hydrogel microfibers of varied macromolecule conformations that can be built-in layered formats, enabling the translation of extraordinary, realistic hydrogel electronic applications, i.e., large strain (1000%) and ultrafast responsive (~30 ms) fiber sensors in a robotic bird, large deformations (6000%) and antifreezing helical electronic conductors, and large strain (700%) capable Janus springs energy harvesters in wearables.

Abstract:Sequential deformations of patterned hydrogels into 3D configurations with multilevel structures are reported, which are realized for the first time in self-shaping materials. The periodically patterned single-layer hydrogels with different polymers are fabricated by multi-step photolithography. After swelling in water, the expansion of compartmentalized high-swelling gels is constrained by the dispersed non-swelling gels, resulting in out-of-plane buckling with high cooperativity and thus forming alternating concave-convex configuration. When the dispersed non-swelling gels are partly replaced by thermoresponsive ones, the preformed overall flat, yet locally undulant, hydrogel deforms further into dome-, saddle-, or sandglass-like configurations at elevated temperature. As such, multilevel 3D structures can be achieved via prebuilt mechanical/geometric cues in a sequentially controlled manner. This conceptual design and sequential deformation of patterned hydrogels to form 3D configurations with multilevel structures should enrich the deformation/functioning modes of morphing materials and broaden their applications in diverse areas.
Isolation and use of Prevotella ruminicola TC18 plasmid pTC18 in Escherichia coli-P. ruminicola shuttle vector construction

Abstract:A cryptic plasmid of approximately 3 kilobases named pTC18 was discovered in a ruminal Prevotella ruminicola TC18 strain and cloned into Escherichia coli. Based on pTC18, several shuttle vectors, containing Prevotella/Bacteroides tetQ selection marker and E. coli vector pUC19 inserted at two different positions in pTC18 were constructed. The shuttle vectors, protected with HaeIII methylase against the P. ruminicola 23 restriction were electroporated into P. ruminicola. Despite numerous attempts a tetracycline resistant recombinant strain 23 was not obtained. The possible causes for electroporation failure are discussed.

Abstract:The design of materials that can mimic encoded shape evolution in nature is important but challenging. Here we present a simple yet versatile strategy for programming the sequential deformation of hydrogel sheets to acquire desired actuation motions and geometric shapes. The method relies on the dual-gradient structure-enabled snapping deformation of hydrogels through the accumulation and burst release of elastic energy, as well as the patterning of the prestored energy in gels. Pretreating distinct regions of the hydrogel sheets with different durations of the same stimulus (or with different stimuli) allows for locally prestoring chemical energy that can be converted to temporospatially patterned elastic energy and abruptly released to drive the successive snapping of different regions of hydrogels in predefined onset sequences. The sequence of energy release (i.e., the sequence of snapping deformation) of the local regions for hydrogels can be reprogrammed by different local prestimulation methods, which allows one gel to deform into various defined geometric configurations. The general mathematic criteria are developed to predict the energy release and snapping of the hydrogels. This work can provide guidance for the design of new-generation actuators and soft robotics.

Abstract:Polymer gels are comprised of a three-dimensional, cross-linked network that can typically withstand the mechanical deformation associated with both swelling and de-swelling. Thus, gels can be designed with smart behaviors that require both stress generation and dissipation, making them well-suited to many applications including membrane technology, water capture devices, and drug delivery systems. In contrast to the fully swelled equilibrium state, limited research characterizes the unsteady-state swelling regime prior to equilibrium. It is in this regime where unique surface deformations can occur. Here we show how internal network constraints and external diffusive pressure can be leveraged to manipulate swelling kinetics and surface deformations in poly(ethylene glycol) gels during unconstrained, three-dimensional swelling. We find that increasing cross-linker molecular weight and swelling in ethanol, as opposed to water, are both effective routes to increase the time it takes to reach equilibrium but do so through different mechanisms. Networks with fewer internal constraints, manipulated via cross-linker chain-length, imbibe more solvent over a longer time. In contrast, swelling in ethanol reduces the amount of solvent imbibed by the network while increasing the time to reach equilibrium. Measurements of surface patterns during swelling establishes that an immediate, fast relaxation at the surface occurs during the first five minutes of swelling. However, the density and persistence of these features varies with solvent quality. These results serve establish a framework for how soft materials undergo dynamic deformation. Engineering transient surface properties while mitigating unwanted instabilities opens the door for emerging technologies such as smart anti-fouling and sensors.

Abstract:Hydrogel adhesion regulation remains a key challenge in applications of stretchable electronics, tissue engineering, and soft robotics. Whereas existing strategies are focused on enhancing adhesion, the underlying mechanics of on-demand mechanical regulation from adhesion promotion to adhesion reduction receives insufficient attention. We propose an effective method to manipulate the energy process zone near the crack front by invoking periodic elastic heterogeneity, whose adhesion toughness exhibits high dependence on the periodic structures and peeling direction. Without modifying surface chemistry, the adhesion of heterogeneous interfaces implemented by 3D printing can enhance peak force by 6-fold or weaken interfacial toughness to 1/30, as compared to the case of a homogeneous interface. Based on a variational principle, analytical formulations and finite element simulations are performed to quantify the heterogeneous behaviors. The analysis captures the instability phenomenon and predicts the maximum peel force. Combined experimental, theoretical, and finite element results demonstrate the effects of geometric parameters and peeling directions on the overall adhesion toughness. This data elucidates an energy storage mechanism, namely that the discrete elastic ligaments free of lateral constraints could enable the interface to accommodate large stretching and store intensified strain energy. The results also indicate the necessity and significance of peeling directions. The work provides a design guideline for on-demand enhancement and detachment in hydrogel interface applications.
