Abstract:Phosphorus as a fundamental element for growth and metabolism of living organisms, yet problematic to water quality, is an irreplaceable component. Application of enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) technology in wastewater treatment plants offers phosphorus removal and recovery in addition to potential eutrophication prevention. This process is dependable on enrichment of phosphorus accumulating organisms in activated sludge to accumulate great amount of poly-phosphate inside their cell interior for enhancement of phosphorus removal. Yet, inadequate removal performance in pilot and full-scale systems, rises the need for optimization in operation and design of applicable configuration. In addition to applying advancement strategies to minimize the growth of undesirable microorganisms through cost effective phosphorus removal along with potential P-recovery and sustainability. Preceding research has certainly advanced the insight on this area of investigation. Notwithstanding, there are still numerous unresolved issues to be undertaken. This comprehensive review paper aims to revisit the current knowledge and fundamental understanding on microbiology and biochemical transformations in EBPR process. In view of application and structure, EBPR design and operation considerations along with process configurations is critically reviewed. This comprehensive review hopes to touch on the critical points of operation to help in understanding the overall EBPR process and to farther provide insights on future work onto EBPR process developments.
Biological Phosphorus Removal Performance and Relevant Microorganism Characteristics of Activated Sludge in Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plants, China

Abstract:Municipal wastewater discharge is threatening the ecological security of the local water environment. This study investigated the field process performance and microorganism characteristics of enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) in municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in China. The results showed that three WWTPs met the required criteria of phosphorus for discharge (≤1 mg/L), but with a low level of Accumulibacter (6.4 to 3.8%, on average) and a relatively high level of Competibacter (3.2 to 9.1%) in sludge. The phosphorus release and uptake rates were varied from 0.224 to 7.770 mg/gVSS·h and 0.386 to 7.901 mg/gVSS·h, respectively. Denitrifying polyphosphate‐accumulating organisms were estimated to be 28.2% of the polyphosphate‐accumulating organisms. Sludge characteristics (phosphorus release and uptake rates) were positively correlated with the abundance of Accumulibacter and negatively correlated with the proportion of Competibacter. Moreover, the lower the ratio of anaerobic phosphorus/acetate (e.g., 0.496) is, the more abundant the Competibacter would be. Further discussion on an improvement strategy for these WWTPs for EBPR should be comprehensively based on the data of periodic investigations on field operation, sludge activities, and microbial populations.

Abstract:Enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) process is applied widely for removing phosphorus from wastewater. Studies on functional microorganisms and their metabolic mechanisms are fundamental to effective regulation for stable operation and performance improvement of EBPR process. Two main types of microorganisms in EBPR systems, polyphosphate accumulating organisms (PAOs) and glycogen accumulating organisms (GAOs) were selected to summarize their metabolic mechanisms such as substrate uptake mechanisms, glycogen degradation pathways, extent of TCA cycle involvement and metabolic similarity between PAOs and GAOs. Application of molecular biology techniques in microbiology and metabolic mechanisms involved in the EBPR system was evaluated. Potential future research areas for the EBPR system and process optimization were also proposed.

Abstract:The enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) process has been implemented in many wastewater treatment plants worldwide. While the EBPR process is indeed capable of efficient phosphorus (P) removal performance, disturbances and prolonged periods of insufficient P removal have been observed at full-scale plants on numerous occasions under conditions that are seemingly favourable for EBPR. Recent studies in this field have utilised a wide range of approaches to address this problem, from studying the microorganisms that are primarily responsible for or detrimental to this process, to determining their biochemical pathways and developing mathematical models that facilitate better prediction of process performance. The overall goal of each of these studies is to obtain a more detailed insight into how the EBPR process works, where the best way of achieving this objective is through linking together the information obtained using these different approaches. This review paper critically assesses the recent advances that have been achieved in this field, particularly relating to the areas of EBPR microbiology, biochemistry, process operation and process modelling. Potential areas for future research are also proposed. Although previous research in this field has undoubtedly improved our level of understanding, it is clear that much remains to be learned about the process, as many unanswered questions still remain. One of the challenges appears to be the integration of the existing and growing scientific knowledge base with the observations and applications in practice, which this paper hopes to partially achieve.

Abstract:Phosphorus emission from human activities is one of the major causes of water eutrophication. The technology of enhanced biological phosphorus removal(EBPR)has been widely applied for removing phosphorus from wastewater due to its advantages of economy and sustainability. The key to the efficient and stable operation of EBPR system is that the microbial community in the system is reasonable and functional. For deeply understanding the mechanism of phosphorus removal and the efficient and stable operation of EBPR system,a large number of studies were conducted on the microbial community structure and main functional microorganisms in the system. In addition to polyphosphate-accumulating organisms(PAOs),the EBPR system also includes non-PAOs,mainly glycogen-accumulating organisms(GAOs) and some auxiliary bacteria. Nowadays,more and more types of functional polyphosphate-accumulating microorganisms were identified,and the most studied PAOs and GAOs were Accumulibacter and Defluviicoccus respectively. PAOs and GAOs compete or cooperate under different environmental conditions,but it is still controversial whether PAOs may exhibit the metabolic properties of GAOs under certain conditions. Besides the traditional factors such as carbon source,pH and temperature,the effects of exogenous pollutants,like antibiotics and heavy metals,on functional microorganisms in EBPR system also exist. The traditional separation methods,blue/white screening and the method of artificial construction of gene engineering bacteria have been applied for acquiring efficient PAOs. The development of modern molecular biologytechnology provides advanced and reliable technical means for the research of functional microorganisms in EBPR system,and the efficient removal of phosphorous by constructing high-performance polyphosphate-accumulating microorganisms will be an important trend in future increasing bio-removal phosphorus efficiency from actual wastewater.

Abstract:Activated sludge systems are designed and operated globally to remove phosphorus microbiologically, a process called enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR). Yet little is still known about the ecology of EBPR processes, the microbes involved, their functions there and the possible reasons why they often perform unreliably. The application of rRNA-based methods to analyze EBPR community structure has changed dramatically our understanding of the microbial populations responsible for EBPR, but many substantial gaps in our knowledge of the population dynamics of EBPR and its underlying mechanisms remain. This review critically examines what we once thought we knew about the microbial ecology of EBPR, what we think we now know, and what still needs to be elucidated before these processes can be operated and controlled more reliably than is currently possible. It looks at the history of EBPR, the currently available biochemical models, the structure of the microbial communities found in EBPR systems, possible identities of the bacteria responsible, and the evidence why these systems might operate suboptimally. The review stresses the need to extend what have been predominantly laboratory-based studies to full-scale operating plants. It aims to encourage microbiologists and process engineers to collaborate more closely and to bring an interdisciplinary approach to bear on this complex ecosystem.

Abstract:This review summarizes the main species of polyphosphate accumulating organisms (PAOs) and algae, illustrates their pathways and key enzymes, discusses biological phosphorous (P) recovery from dilute waters, and identifies research avenues to encourage adoption and implementation. Phylogenic analysis indicates that the Proteobacteria phylum plays an important role in enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR). The use of meta-transcriptome analysis and single cell-based techniques to help overcome the challenges associated with non-PAO competition was discussed. For algae capable of luxury phosphorus uptake, fundamental research is needed to illustrate the phosphorus regulation process and key proteins involved. Emerging technologies and processes have great potential to further advance phosphorus recovery, including combined PAO/algae reactors, bioelectrochemical systems, and biosorption by phosphorus binding proteins. As the paradigm shifts toward holistic resource recovery, research is needed to explore P+ recovery with other resources (e.g., metals from sludge), using a combination of biological and chemical approaches.

Abstract:This study assessed the impact of the operating conditions of the biofilm sequencing batch reactor (BSBR) on the community structure and the growth/metabolic pathways of its polyphosphate-accumulating organisms (PAOs). There are significant difference with reference to the enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) process. The leading PAOs in BSBR generally are capable of high affinity acetate metabolism, gluconeogenesis, and low affinity phosphate transport, and have various carbon source supplementation pathways to ensure the efficient circulation of energy and reducing power. A new model of the metabolic mechanism of PAOs in the BSBR was formulated, which features low glycogen metabolism with simultaneous gluconeogenesis and glycogenolysis and differs significantly from the classic mechanism based on Candidatus_Accumulibacter and Tetrasphaera . The findings will assist the efficient recovery of low concentration phosphate in municipal wastewater.

Abstract:Increasing eutrophication has led to a continuous deterioration of many aquatic ecosystems. Polyphosphate-accumulating organisms (PAOs) can provide insight into the human response to this challenge, as they initiate enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) through cyclical anaerobic phosphorus release and aerobic phosphorus uptake. Although the limiting environmental factors for PAO growth and phosphorus removal have been widely discussed, there remains a gap in the knowledge surrounding the differences in the type and phosphorus removal efficiencies of natural and engineered PAO systems. Furthermore, due to the limitations of PAOs in conventional wastewater treatment environments, there is an urgent need to find functional PAOs in extreme environments for better wastewater treatment. Therefore, it is necessary to explore the effects of extreme conditions on the phosphorus removal efficiency of PAOs as well as the types, sources, and characteristics of PAOs. In this paper, we summarize the response mechanisms of PAOs, denitrifying polyphosphate-accumulating organisms (D-PAOs), aerobic denitrifying polyphosphate-accumulating organisms (AD-PAOs), and sulfur-related PAOs (S-PAOs). The mechanism of nitrogen and phosphorus removal in PAOs is related to the coupling cycles of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur. The genera of PAOs differ in natural and engineered systems, but PAOs have more diversity in aquatic environments and soils. Recent studies on the impact of several parameters (e.g., temperature, carbon source, pH, and dissolved oxygen) and extracellular polymer substances on the phosphorus removal efficiency of PAOs in natural and engineered systems are further discussed. Most of the PAOs screened under extreme conditions still had high phosphorus removal efficiencies (>80.0 %). These results provide a reference for searching for PAOs with different adaptations to achieve better wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Recently, it has been reported that biological phosphorus removal (BPR) could be achieved in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) with aerobic/extended-idle (A/EI) regime using synthetic medium. This paper first examined the feasibility and stability of the A/EI regime treating real domestic wastewater. The results showed that the A/EI-SBR removed 1.32 +/- 0.03-3.55 +/- 0.04 mg of phosphorus per g of volatile suspended solids during the steady-state operation, suggesting that BPR from domestic wastewater could be well realised in the A/EI regime. Then, another SBR operated as the conventional anaerobic/oxic (A/O) regime was conducted to compare the soluble orthophosphate (SOP) removal with the A/EI regime. The results clearly showed that the A/EI regime achieved higher SOP removal than the A/O regime. Finally, the mechanism for the A/EI-SBR driving superior SOP removal was investigated. It was found that the sludge cultured by the A/EI regime had more polyphosphate accumulating organisms and less glycogen accumulating organisms than that by the A/O regime. Further investigations showed that the A/EI-SBR had a lower glycogen transformation and a higher PHB/PHV ratio, which correlated well with the superior phosphorus removal. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:The poor quality of effluent discharged by municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is threatening the safety of water ecology. This study, which integrated a field survey, batch tests, and microbial community identification, was designed to improve the effectiveness of the enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) process for WWTPs. Over two-thirds of the investigated WWTPs could not achieve total P in effluent lower than 0.5 mg/L, mainly due to the high ratio of chemical oxygen demand to P (28.6–196.2) in the influent. The rates of anaerobic P release and aerobic P uptake for the activated sludge varied from 0.22 to 7.9 mg/g VSS/h and 0.43 to 8.11 mg/g VSS/h, respectively. The fraction of Accumulibacter (PAOs: polyphosphate accumulating organisms) was 4.8 ± 2.0% of the total biomass, while Competibacter (GAOs: glycogen-accumulating organisms) accounted for 4.8 ± 6.4%. The anaerobic P-release rate was found to be an effective indicator of EBPR. Four classifications of the principal components were identified to improve the EBPR effluent quality and sludge activity.
Combined Enhanced Biological Phosphorus Removal (EBPR) and Nitrite Accumulation for Treating High-strength Wastewater

Abstract:AbstractThe enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) has been widely applied in treating domestic wastewater, while the performance on high-strength P wastewater is less investigated and the feasibility of coupling with short-cut nitrogen removal process remains unknown. This study first achieved the simultaneous high-efficient P removal and stable nitrite accumulation in one sequencing batch reactor for treating the synthetic digested manure wastewater. The average effluent P could be down to 0.8 ± 1.0 mg P/L and the P removal efficiency was 99.5 ± 0.8%. Candidatus Accumulibacter was the dominant polyphosphate accumulating organism (PAO) with the relative abundance of 14.2-33.1% in the reactor. Examination of the micro-diversity of Candidatus Accumulibacter using 16s rRNA gene-based oligotyping analysis revealed one unique Accumulibacter oligotype that different from the conventional system, which accounted for 64.2-87.9% of the total Accumulibacter abundance. The presence of high-abundant glycogen accumulating organisms (GAO) (15.6-40.3%, Defluviicoccus and Candidatus Competibacter) did not deteriorate the EBPR performance. Moreover, nitrite accumulation happened in the system with the effluent nitrite up to 20.4 ± 6.4 mg N/L and the nitrite accumulation ratio was nearly 100% maintained for 140 days (420 cycles). Nitrosomonas was the dominant ammonia-oxidizing bacteria with relative abundance of 0.3-2.4% while nitrite-oxidizing bacteria were almost undetected (<0.1%). The introduction of extended anaerobic phase and high volatile fatty acid concentrations were proposed to be the potential selector forces to promote partial nitrification. This is the first study that combined EBPR with nitrite-accumulation for digested manure wastewater treatment, and it provided new sights in strategies to combine the EBPR and short-cut nitrogen removal via nitrite to achieve simultaneous nitrogen and phosphorus removal.
Study on community structure and metabolic mechanism of dominant polyphosphate-accumulating organisms (PAOs) and glycogen-accumulating organisms (GAOs) in suspended biofilm based on phosphate recovery

Abstract:Biofilm sequencing batch reactor (BSBR) can achieve efficient phosphate (P) removal and enrichment, but its process performance and metabolic mechanisms for P removal and enrichment of municipal wastewater remain largely unclear. In the present study, we assessed the P removal and enrichment of municipal wastewater at influent P concentrations of 2.5 mg/L and 10 mg/L. The efficiency of P removal and enzyme activity in polyphosphate-accumulating organisms (PAOs) and glycogen-accumulating organisms (GAOs) were compared, and the growth and metabolic characteristics of dominant PAOs and GAOs at different influent P concentrations were studied with the macro-sequencing technology. The results showed that the P recovery efficiencies were 70.03% and 76.19% when the influent P concentration was 2.5 mg/L and 10 mg/L in BSBR, respectively, and the maximum P concentration of recovery liquid was 81.29 mg/L and 173.12 mg/L, respectively. There were no phosphate kinase (PPK) and phosphate hydrolase (PPX) in extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). The dominant PAOs were Candidatus_Contendobacter, Dechloromonas, and Flavobacterium, and the dominant GAO was Candidatus_Competibacter. The abundance of Candidatus_Contendobacter was the highest with the most potential contribution to P removal. PAOs had competitive advantages in carbon (C) source uptake, glycogen metabolism, P metabolism, and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) metabolism. HMP was unique to PAOs, EMP had the highest abundance in glycogen metabolism, and ED was contained in PAOs of BSBR. These results indicated that BSBR provided sufficient reducing power and ATP for PAOs through different glycogen decomposition pathways to promote P uptake and obtained competitive advantages in P metabolism, C source uptake, and ATP utilization to achieve efficient P removal and enrichment. Collectively, our current findings provided valuable insights into the P removal and enrichment mechanism of BSBR in municipal sewage.

Abstract:Enhanced biological phosphorus (bio-P) removal from wastewater is a promising technology for which the fundamental mechanisms are still unclear. The purpose of this paper is to present a biochemical model that explains bio-P removal mechanisms occurring under anaerobic, aerobic and anoxic conditions of the process. A bio-P bacterium is referred to as one that can store both polyphosphate and carbon (as poly-β-hydroxybutyrate for example). In this communication, observations from the literature are first reviewed and mechanisms of bacterial bioenergetics and membrane transport are summarized. The model for bio-P metabolism under anaerobic, aerobic and anoxic conditions is then presented. The role of polyphosphate under anaerobic conditions is suggested to be as a source of energy both for the reestablishment of the proton motive force, which would be consumed by substrate transport and for substrate storage. The role of the anaerobic zone is to maximize the storage of organic substrates in bio-P bacteria. For this purpose the supply of readily available substrates should be maximized and the presence of electron acceptors (molecular oxygen or oxidized nitrogen) minimized. Under subsequent aerobic or anoxic conditions, bio-P bacteria will accumulate polyphosphates in response to the availability of electron acceptors (oxygen or oxidized nitrogen) for energy production. Carbon reserves in bio-P bacteria should provide energy for growth and for soluble phosphate accumulation as polyphosphate reserves.

Abstract:Waste streams offer a compelling opportunity to recover phosphorus (P). 15-20% of world demand for phosphate rock could theoretically be satisfied by recovering phosphorus from domestic waste streams alone. For very dilute streams (<10 mg PL(-1)), including domestic wastewater, it is necessary to concentrate phosphorus in order to make recovery and reuse feasible. This review discusses enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) as a key technology to achieve this. EBPR relies on polyphosphate accumulating organisms (PAOs) to take up phosphorus from waste streams, so concentrating phosphorus in biomass. The P-rich biosolids can be either directly applied to land, or solubilized and phosphorus recovered as a mineral product. Direct application is effective, but the product is bulky and carries contaminant risks that need to be managed. Phosphorus release can be achieved using either thermochemical or biochemical methods, while recovery is generally by precipitation as struvite. We conclude that while EBPR technology is mature, the subsequent phosphorus release and recovery technologies need additional development.

Abstract:Understanding the microbiology of phosphorus (P) removal is considered essential to knowledge-based optimization of enhanced biological P removal (EBPR) systems. Biological P removal is achieved in these systems by promoting the growth of organisms collectively known as the polyphosphate accumulating organisms (PAOs). Also considered important to EBPR are the glycogen accumulating organisms (GAOs), which are theorized to compete with the PAOs for resources at the expense of P removal efficiency. Numerous studies have sought to identify the PAOs and their GAOs competitors, with several candidates proposed for each over the last few decades. The current study collectively assessed the abundance and diversity of all proposed PAOs and GAOs in 18 Danish full-scale wastewater treatment plants with well-working biological nutrient removal over a period of 9 years using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. The microbial community structure in all plants was relatively stable over time. Evidence for the role of the proposed PAOs and GAOs in EBPR varies and is critically assessed, in light of their calculated amplicon abundances, to indicate which of these are important in full-scale systems. Bacteria from the genus Tetrasphaera were the most abundant of the PAOs. The "Candidatus Accumulibacter" PAOs were in much lower abundance and appear to be biased by the amplicon-based method applied. The genera Dechloromonas, Microlunatus, and Tessaracoccus were identified as abundant putative PAO that require further research attention. Interestingly, the actinobacterial Micropruina and sbr-gs28 phylotypes were among the most abundant of the putative GAOs. Members of the genera Defluviicoccus, Propionivibrio, the family Competibacteraceae, and the spb280 group were also relatively abundant in some plants. Despite observed high abundances of GAOs (periodically exceeding 20% of the amplicon reads), P removal performance was maintained, indicating that these organisms were not outcompeting the PAOs in these EBPR systems. Phylogenetic diversity within each of the PAOs and GAOs genera was observed, which is consistent with reported metabolic diversity for these. Whether or not key traits can be assigned to sub-genus level clades requires further investigation.

Abstract:Currently, the most cost-effective and efficient method for phosphorus (P) removal from wastewater is enhanced biological P removal (EPBR) via polyphosphate-accumulating organisms (PAOs). This study integrates a literature review with genomic analysis to uncover the phylogenetic and metabolic diversity of the relevant PAOs for wastewater treatment. The findings highlight significant differences in the metabolic capabilities of PAOs relevant to wastewater treatment. Notably, Candidatus Dechloromonas and Candidatus Accumulibacter can synthesize polyhydroxyalkanoates, possess specific enzymes for ATP production from polyphosphate, and have electrochemical transporters for acetate and C4-dicarboxylates. In contrast, Tetrasphaera, Candidatus Phosphoribacter, Knoellia, and Phycicoccus possess PolyP-glucokinase and electrochemical transporters for sugars/amino acids. Additionally, this review explores various detection methods for polyphosphate and PAOs in activated sludge wastewater treatment plants. Notably, FISH-Raman spectroscopy emerges as one of the most advanced detection techniques. Overall, this review provides critical insights into PAO research, underscoring the need for enhanced strategies in biological phosphorus removal.

Abstract:The review examines the microbiological aspects of the biological phosphorus removal from wastewater. The history of the development of biotechnology and the discovery of the physiological group of phosphate-accumulating organisms (PAOs), which biologically remove phosphorus via the phosphate uptake and storage in the form of intracellular polyphosphates, is briefly described. PAOs are characterized by a cyclic type of metabolism that occurs when the anaerobic/aerobic conditions cyclically change. Under anaerobic conditions, PAOs uptake and store organic compounds through the energy of degradation of intracellular polyphosphates. When anaerobic conditions change to aerobic or an alternative electron acceptor appears, PAOs uptake phosphates and synthesize intracellular polyphosphates using the intracellular polymeric sources of carbon and energy accumulated under anaerobic conditions. The main representatives of the PAOs, their metabolic models, and physiological characteristics are described. The basic principles of the implementation of biotechnology used in the practice of wastewater treatment for phosphorus and other nutrients are considered.

Abstract:Phosphorus in wastewater poses a significant environmental threat, leading to water pollution and eutrophication. However, it plays a crucial role in the water-energy-resource recovery-environment (WERE) nexus. Recovering Phosphorus from wastewater can close the phosphorus loop, supporting circular economy principles by reusing it as fertilizer or in industrial applications. Despite the recognized importance of phosphorus recovery, there is a lack of analysis of the cyber-physical framework concerning the WERE nexus. Advanced methods like automatic control, optimal process technologies, artificial intelligence (AI), and life cycle assessment (LCA) have emerged to enhance wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) operations focusing on improving effluent quality, energy efficiency, resource recovery, and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Providing insights into implementing modeling and simulation platforms, control, and optimization systems for Phosphorus recovery in WERE (P-WERE) in WWTPs is extremely important in WWTPs. This review highlights the valuable applications of AI algorithms, such as machine learning, deep learning, and explainable AI, for predicting phosphorus (P) dynamics in WWTPs. It emphasizes the importance of using AI to analyze microbial communities and optimize WWTPs for different various objectives. Additionally, it discusses the benefits of integrating mechanistic and data-driven models into plant-wide frameworks, which can enhance GHG simulation and enable simultaneous nitrogen (N) and Phosphorus (P) removal. The review underscores the significance of prioritizing recovery actions to redirect Phosphorus from effluent to reusable products for future considerations.

Abstract:A full‐scale side‐stream enhanced biological phosphorous removal (S2EBPR) was monitored to examine the correlation between polyphosphate accumulating organisms (PAOs) activity and seasonal/operational parameters, analyze the microbial community, and assess S2EBPR feasibility. Results indicated elevated competition of other carbon consumers for limited resources due to seasonal changes. S2EBPR showed lower costs than EBPR and chemical precipitation in long‐term applications. Phosphorous (P) removal in wastewater treatment is essential to prevent eutrophication in water bodies. Side‐stream enhanced biological phosphorous removal (S2EBPR) is utilized to improve biological P removal by recirculating internal streams within a side‐stream reactor to generate biodegradable carbon (C) for polyphosphate accumulating organisms (PAOs). In this study, a full‐scale S2EBPR system in a water resource recovery facility (WRRF) was evaluated for 5 months. Batch experiments revealed a strong positive correlation (r = 0.91) between temperature and C consumption rate (3.56–8.18 mg‐COD/g‐VSS/h) in the system, with temperature ranging from 14°C to 18°C. The anaerobic P‐release to COD‐uptake ratio decreased from 0.93 to 0.25 mg‐P/mg‐COD as the temperature increased, suggesting competition between PAOs and other C‐consumers, such as heterotrophic microorganisms, to uptake bioavailable C. Microbial community analysis did not show a strong relationship between abundance and activity of PAO in the tested WRRF. An assessment of the economic feasibility was performed to compare the costs and benefits of a full scale WRRF with and without implementation of the S2EBPR technology. The results showed the higher capital costs required for S2EBPR were estimated to be compensated after 5 and 11 years of operation, respectively, compared to chemical precipitation and conventional EBPR. The results from this study can assist in the decision‐making process for upgrading a conventional EBPR or chemical P removal process to S2EBPR. Practitioner Points Implementation of S2EBPR presents adaptable configurations, exhibiting advantages over conventional setups in addressing prevalent challenges associated with phosphorous removal. A full‐scale S2EBPR WRRF was monitored over 5 months, and activity tests were used to measure the kinetic parameters. The seasonal changes impact the kinetic parameters of PAOs in the S2EBPR process, with elevated temperatures raising the carbon demand. PAOs abundance showed no strong correlation with their activity in the full‐scale S2EBPR process in the tested WRRF. Feasibility assessment shows that the benefits from S2EBPR operation can offset upgrading costs from conventional BPR or chemical precipitation.
