Abstract:The study investigated the evocation of mental imagery and emotional responses when English–Chinese bilinguals read classic Chinese poems and their English translations to examine (1) the target readers' formation of non-verbal text representations of Chinese poetry and (2) whether different translations affect the target readers' imagery cognition. A total of 20 English–Chinese speaker students enrolled in a Chinese university read a classic Chinese poem in Chinese and its four versions of translation in English. Through questionnaires and interviews, participants rated the visualized words used in the poems for the degree of mental imagery and emotional response evoked based on three indicators of narrative process, salience value, and emotive validity in the theoretical framework of visual grammar. Results showed considerable individual variances in the cognitive differences in forming mental imagery in all versions of the poems and there were also effects of translation strategy. Moreover, visual language information in poetry reading and its translations evoked different emotional responses depending on the use of visual words with cultural features. Our study demonstrates the applicability and accessibility of visual language in describing different readers' mental imagery and the interrelation and interaction between the poetry language system and the emotional, social, and cultural contexts involved in poetry translation.

Abstract:Phonological beauty is an important aesthetic feature of poetry. Reproduction of Chinese ancient poetry’s phonological beauty in English translation is of great significance. Professor Xu Yuanchong is an accomplished poetry translator who creatively reproduce original Chinese poems’ phonological beauty by employing various techniques such as alliteration, end rhyme, repetition, onomatopoeia, etc. This suggests that Chinese poetry’s phonological beauty can be reproduced in English translations although they realize their respective phonological beauties through their respective unique devices.

Abstract:This paper focuses on intersemiotic translation of Yixiang, or image in western literary term, from poetry to painting by taking Tang Poetry in Paintings as a case to exemplify the translation strategies of Yixiang from verbal sign system to visual sign system. Furthermore, the meditative role of the visualized images in the target context will also be touched upon. A qualitative approach is applied in the study. Typical examples will be chosen for case analysis. It is found that the strategies of equivalence, focalization, integration, montage, addition, contrast and omission are employed by the painters. The effects of those visualized images varied in different cases. Overall, cooperating with the interlingual translations, visual languages such as color, shadow, body language of figures, picture structure are employed to help English readers better receive the poems.

From Tang poetry, Song Ci to Yuan Qu, the charm of Chinese poetry has conquered generations of readers. Chinese poetry works like a bridge of communication, allowing a dialogue between Eastern and Western cultures. Image is an important part of poetry, carrying a heavy cultural tradition, which is the sediment of the long history and splendid culture of the Chinese nation. From the perspective of Cultural Translation Theory, this paper selects representative Chinese poems about "bamboo" to study and explore effective translation strategies. The aim of the research in the paper is to made readers appreciate the beauty of the image of "bamboo" in Chinese ancient poetry and promote the international communication of Chinese poetry as well.

Abstract:The prose Fond Memories of Peiping portrays the unique impression of Peijing of the Chinese writer Lao She, highlighting deep affection and attachment to his homeland, which is of high literary and aesthetic value. This paper discusses the application of reception aesthetics’ core concepts of “horizon of expectations”, “fusion of horizons” and “indeterminacy” in the translation of prose, which takes Mr. Zhang Peiji’s English translation of Fond Memories of Peiping as an example. It is found that Mr. Zhang Peiji’s employs amplification and free translation methods to deal with culture-loaded words and idioms to meet the readers’ expectations. Through the manipulation of rhetorical devices and the adaptation of sentence structures, the translated text is made more in line with the reading habits of the target language readers, thereby achieving “fusion of horizons”. Zhang Peiji demonstrates subjectivity in the translation process to deal with “indeterminacy” in the original text, which effectively preserves and conveys the aesthetic value of the original work.

Abstract:Russian and Chinese languages belong to different language families, which makes it difficult to translate from one language to the other. The translation of one poetic language into another without making any changes is an especially difficult task, which is why conveying the aesthetic value of the original poem becomes the embodiment of an ideal adequate translation. The aesthetic values of Tang poetry lie in the integration of sound, thought form and the poetic world, that is, in the beauty of rhythm, the accuracy of the line and the expression of feelings depicted in the text. Rhythm, rhyme and poetic dimension belong to the form of poetry; the meaning of words, sentences and text together form the meaning of poetry; and the picture of life depicted in the text makes up the poetic world. If the Russian translation of Tang poetry can achieve conformity of form, equivalence of meaning and consistency of the poetic world with the original poetry, then it will be able to realize the aesthetic value of the original poetry and will relate to the ideal complete translation of poetry. The poem “Thought on a Quiet Night” is one of Li Bai’s masterpieces and it is included in Chinese language textbooks for elementary school. Due to the high aesthetic value of this poem, it has become a compulsory poem for Chinese elementary school students to study. To date, there are eight translations of this poem in Russia. This article mainly considers the translations by V. A. Alekseev, L. N. Menshikov, and V. F. Pereleshin. Through the comparative analysis on these three versions about the “Thoughts on a Quiet Night”, it shows that different translators with different aesthetic aspirations may produce disparate translation.

By fully understanding the two English translated versions of Qiangjinjiu respectively by Xu Yuanchong and Burton Watson, the thesis will make a comparative analysis of the two versions from the perspective of translation aesthetics. Abstract:This paper attempts to probe into English translation of fuzzy beauty of classical Chinese poetry via imagery. Classical Chinese poetry is the cream of Chinese culture. It attracts millions of Chinese and western readers with its subtle and profound fuzzy beauty. The ultimate requirement of English translation of classical Chinese poetry lies in transferring its fuzzy beauty. Fuzzy beauty of classical Chinese poetry falls into three categories: fuzzy beauty in form, fuzzy beauty in imagery and fuzzy beauty in artistic conception. Imagery, being the soul of classical Chinese poetry, serves as a communicative and operational medium of transference of fuzzy beauty. The essence of fuzzy beauty consists in "gaps of indeterminacy" which conjures up the reader's unrestrained association. "Gaps of indeterminacy" constitute the "appealing structure" in a text which is subject to the reader's free interpretation according to his own "horizon of expectation". Fuzzy aesthetics sheds light on the aesthetic features of fuzzy beauty, and the hierarchical structure of fuzzy beauty in fuzzy aesthetics corresponds to different layers of fuzzy beauty of classical Chinese poetry. Therefore, both aesthetics of reception and fuzzy aesthetics are of instructive value to English translation of classical Chinese poetry. This paper is composed of five sections. The introductory section is concerned with the significance and purpose of the research. The second section reveals in detail fuzzy beauty in classical Chinese poetry. In the third section, the techniques and principle for translation of poetic fuzzy beauty are put forward in light of aesthetics of reception and fuzzy aesthetics and imagery is recommended as an ideal medium of transference of fuzzy beauty. The fourth section centers on how to transfer fuzzy beauty of classical Chinese poetry using imagery as a medium, analyses and proposals are given from such angles as fuzzy modifiers, syntax, juxtaposition, and cultural influences. A natural conclusion is drawn in the last section.

Abstract:Tang poetry is rich in images, and the pipa portrayed in Tang poetry mainly symbolizes compassion and melancholy, indifference and openness, and joy and resentment. With the approaches of case study and comparative analysis, the study built a framework of the relevance translation theory to compare the pipa images in three English versions of Three Hundred Tang Poems: The Jade Mountain: A Chinese Anthology (jointly translated by Witter Bynner and Kiang Kanghu), 300 Tang Poems: A New Translation (compiled by Xu Yuanchong, Lu Peixian and Wu Juntao) and English Translation of 320 Tang Poems (translated by Betty Tseng). Then, the contextual effects of pipa images in the three English versions are analyzed with the difference of the translators. The findings are conducive to enlightening translators’ mindset of creating optimal context relevance for target readers and maintaining sustainable development of traditional Chinese culture.

Abstract:As the treasure of Chinese literature, ancient poetry contains rich cultural images. It is not only the crystallization of language art but also the carrier of cultural inheritance. Image and symbolism play an essential role in ancient Chinese poetry, which not only enriches the connotation of poetry but also brings challenges to translation. In the translation of ancient Chinese poetry, accurately conveying cultural images has become an essential task for translators. This paper takes one of the renowned Tang-dynasty poets, Li Bai's Silent Night Thoughts, as an example to explore the cultural images in ancient Chinese poetry and its translation strategies. Through the analysis of different versions of the poem translation, combined with the cultural background and language characteristics, this paper discusses the methods and techniques of the translation of cultural images and symbolism in ancient Chinese poetry in order to provide a new way of thinking and perspective for the translation of Chinese ancient poetry.

The study emphasizes the necessity of employing cognitive poetics as a guiding perspective for translators, enabling them to navigate the intricacies of Tang poetry's imagery, rhyme, and rhythm, and suggests to utilize modern translation tools to better convey the emotional depth of the original works, while also providing cultural context to enhance readers' understanding. The cross-cultural communication aspect of Tang poetry translation is explored, as it transcends linguistic boundaries to become a channel for cultural exchange. Translators are challenged to strike a balance between faithfulness to the original poem and adaptability to the target culture's sensibilities. This balance is crucial in preserving the cognitive elements of the original work. To ensure the effective cross-cultural communication of Tang poetry, it is essential to retain the unique imagery that carries profound cultural connotations. The study culminates in offering a set of strategies and suggestions for optimizing Tang poetry translation, including maintaining cultural background, preserving rhyme and rhythm, adding explanatory elements, respecting the poet's style, and ensuring proper literariness in the translation.

The article takes the aesthetic features embodied in A Tale of the Fountain of the Peach Blossom Spring as an example, and on the basis of the theory of translation aesthetics proposed by Liu Miqing, it explores the aesthetic representation in the English translations of A Tale of the Fountain of the Peach Blossom Spring by Lin Yutang, Luo Jingguo, and Xie Baikui at the levels of the formal system and the non-formal system, so as to provide the reference and significance for the contemporary translation of the classical Chinese text.
Evaluating English translations of ancient Chinese poetry with special reference to image schemas and foregrounding

Abstract:Poetry translation evaluation from ancient Chinese to English has been subjective in China. This is caused by the indefinable and intangible notion of ‘poetic spirit’, which is often used in influential translators’ criteria, and by the lack of a systematic investigation of translation evaluation. The problem of subjective criteria has remained unresolved for nearly a century. In order to improve the subjective criteria of poetry translation evaluation, this thesis is an attempt to make objective evaluations of the English translations of an ancient Chinese poem using stylistic theories. To make an objective criticism, it is necessary to offer evidence which is based on systematic and reliable criteria and replicable evaluation procedures. By applying stylistic theories to both the source text and the target texts, it is possible to make a judgement based on the stylistic features found in the texts themselves. Thus, objective evaluation of poetry translation from ancient Chinese to English can be made. This research is qualitative with the data consisting of one ancient Chinese poem as the source text and six English translations as the target texts. It carries out stylistic analyses on the data with two approaches based on the cognitive stylistic concept of figure and ground and the linguistic stylistic theory of foregrounding. The target texts are judged by the evidence of locative relations and foregrounding features. This research also explores and proposes a practical framework for poetry translation. The research findings suggest how to make objective poetry translation evaluations and improve translation techniques. They also point out the need to integrate stylistics with translation evaluation to make improvements in the field.

Abstract:Although literary translation and aesthetics belong to different categories, they are inextricably linked. No matter what kind of language is the target of literary translation, it will be branded with relevant aesthetic thoughts to a great extent. This phenomenon can be seen everywhere in the field of literary translation in the East and the West. There are similarities between Chinese and Western aesthetics, for example, their origins are related to philosophy, and they are inseparable from literary aesthetics; there are also differences certainly, such as different psychological origins, different characteristics of development track, different attention to beauty, different methodology and so on. Through the comparative analysis of the similarities and differences between the two sides in aesthetic ideas, this paper aims to enhance its guiding role in translation practice.
Application of Foreignization Strategy in Chinese Translation of Emily Dickinson's Poetry: Taking Zhou Jianxin's Translation Selected Poems of Emily Dickinson: 601-900 as an Example

Abstract:Poetry is the perfect combination of form and content. Therefore, poetry translation should faithfully translate the original form and content. In other words, foreignization could be the best translation strategy for poetry translation, especially for those poems with distinctive formal characteristics, such as the poems of Emily Dickinson, a 19th-century American poetess. Currently, there have been 17 Chinese translations of Dickinson's poetry published in China, with few of them using a foreignization strategy; most of these translations fail to faithfully reproduce the original flavor of Dickinson's poetry. This study takes the only version of the current 17 translations that adopts the foreignization strategy, Zhou Jianxin's translated book, Selected Poems of Emily Dickinson: 601-900, as a research object to investigate Zhou's translation of poetic form and vocabulary through data statistics and textual analysis. It is found that Zhou has basically reproduced original punctuation marks and lexical connotations and achieved equivalence of lexical function and meaning in lexical translation. Zhou's translation shows no traces of translation. That is, it reads natural and fluent. It retains original thought-provoking content and form and is a successful example of adopting a foreignization strategy to translate Dickinson's poems into Chinese, which justifies that the application of foreignization strategy in the Chinese translation of Dickinson's poetry is not only necessary but also feasible, which is the purpose of this study. It is expected that this study should encourage more Chinese translators to apply the foreignization strategy in translating Dickinson's poetry in the future so as to further enhance the quality of Chinese translation of Dickinson's poetry and present a truer and more authentic image of Dickinson's poetry in the Chinese world.

Abstract:The Book of Songs is the first collection of Chinese poems and the representative of Chinese classical culture. It plays an indelible role in the development of Chinese social culture. The Book of Songs not only boasts rhythm in reading, but also has a good effect in meaning expression and rhetoric. Taking the translation of The Book of Songs as an example, this thesis focuses on the study of aesthetic features in Xu Yuanchong’s translation from the perspective of Translation Aesthetics, and analyzes the translation aesthetic principles embodied in the translation cases. Poetry translation can be concluded that it not only requires accurate language, but also needs aesthetic features. Therefore, the translator should analyze the aesthetic features of the original poem before translating the poem, namely the beauty of meaning, sound and form. At the same time, the translator should give full play to his creative ability, and seek for the harmony and unity of meaning, sound and form on the basis of the original text, so as to make the translated poem equal to the original poem in aesthetic function.

Abstract:When translating poetry, the unique literary genre poses a significant challenge to the translator’s ability. The work of translating English poems into Chinese has a history of 20 years in China. In this paper, the author collected and studied the strategies used in the translation of English poetry into Chinese from 2014 to 2024, focusing on solving the persistent confusion surrounding key terms such as “translation strategy”, “translation method” and “translation technique”. This study aims to clarify these structures and examine their practical significance in the context of real translation. In the decision-making process of translation strategy selection, translators need to balance cultural and aesthetic expectations with the practical application of these strategies. In this paper, a systematic literature review method is adopted as the methodology, and the results emphasize the importance of balancing domestication and foreignization strategies to ensure translation fidelity and emotional resonance. In addition, the study summarizes seven key research gaps, including the need for more empirical research to verify the effectiveness of these strategies in different contexts. This paper emphasizes the value of continuous academic discussion in improving translation practice, respecting both the original text and the nuances of regional languages, thereby contributing to a richer and more effective exchange of Chinese-English literature.
