Abstract:The field of research examining the link between dehydration and endurance performance is at the dawn of a new era. This article reviews the latest findings describing the relationship between exercise-induced dehydration and endurance performance and provides the knowledge necessary for competitive, endurance-trained athletes to develop a winning hydration strategy. Acute, pre-exercise body weight loss at or above 3% may decrease subsequent endurance performance. Therefore, endurance athletes should strive to start exercise well hydrated, which can be achieved by keeping thirst sensation low and urine color pale and drinking approximately 5-10 mL/kg body weight of water 2 h before exercise. During exercise lasting 1 h or less, dehydration does not decrease endurance performance, but athletes are encouraged to mouth-rinse with sports drinks. During exercise lasting longer than 1 h, in which fluid is readily available, drinking according to the dictates of thirst maximizes endurance performance. In athletes whose thirst sensation is untrustworthy or when external factors such as psychological stress or repeated food intake may blunt thirst sensation, it is recommended to program fluid intake to maintain exercise-induced body weight loss around 2% to 3%.

Abstract:Hypohydration can impair aerobic performance and deteriorate cognitive function during exercise. To minimize hypohydration, athletes are recommended to commence exercise at least euhydrated, ingest fluids containing sodium during long-duration and/or high-intensity exercise to prevent body mass loss over 2% and maintain elevated plasma osmolality, and rapidly restore and retain fluid and electrolyte homeostasis before a second exercise session. To achieve these goals, the compositions of the fluids consumed are key; however, it remains unclear what can be considered an optimal formulation for a hydration beverage in different settings. While carbohydrate–electrolyte solutions such as sports drinks have been extensively explored as a source of carbohydrates to meet fuel demands during intense and long-duration exercise, these formulas might not be ideal in situations where fluid and electrolyte balance is impaired, such as practicing exercise in the heat. Alternately, hypotonic compositions consisting of moderate to high levels of electrolytes (i.e., ≥45 mmol/L), mainly sodium, combined with low amounts of carbohydrates (i.e., <6%) might be useful to accelerate intestinal water absorption, maintain plasma volume and osmolality during exercise, and improve fluid retention during recovery. Future studies should compare hypotonic formulas and sports drinks in different exercise settings, evaluating different levels of sodium and/or other electrolytes, blends of carbohydrates, and novel ingredients for addressing hydration and rehydration before, during, and after exercise.

Abstract:Personalized hydration strategies play a key role in optimizing the performance and safety of athletes during sporting activities. Clinicians should be aware of the many physiological, behavioral, logistical and psychological issues that determine both the athlete’s fluid needs during sport and his/her opportunity to address them; these are often specific to the environment, the event and the individual athlete. In this paper we address the major considerations for assessing hydration status in athletes and practical solutions to overcome obstacles of a given sport. Based on these solutions, practitioners can better advise athletes to develop practices that optimize hydration for their sports.

Fluid and electrolyte loss and replacement in exercise.

Abstract:Prolonged exercise leads to a progressive water and electrolyte loss from the body as sweat is secreted to promote heat loss. The rate of sweating depends on many factors and is increased in proportion to the work rate and the environmental temperature and humidity. Sweat rate is highly variable between individuals, and can exceed 21 h-1 for prolonged periods. Since it is established that dehydration will impair exercise capacity and can pose a risk to health, the intake of fluid during exercise to offset sweat loss is important. Fluid intake is also aimed at providing a source of substrate, usually in the form of carbohydrate. The availability of ingested fluids may be limited by gastric emptying or by intestinal absorption. Gastric emptying of liquids is slowed by the addition of carbohydrate in proportion to the carbohydrate concentration and osmolality of the solution. With increasing glucose concentration, the rate of fluid delivery to the small intestine is decreased, but the rate of glucose delivery is increased. Water absorption in the small intestine is a passive process and is stimulated by the active absorption of glucose and sodium. The optimum fluid for rehydration during exercise depends on many factors, particularly the intensity and duration of the exercise, the environmental conditions, and the individual physiology of the athlete. There is no advantage to fluid intake during exercise of less than 30 min duration. The composition of fluids to be used will depend on the relative needs to replace water and to provide substrate. Where rehydration is a priority the solution should contain some glucose and sodium and should not exceed isotonicity: this will require the glucose concentration to be low (20-309 g l-1) or the substitution of glucose polymers, and the sodium content to be high (perhaps as much as 60 mmol l-1). Where substrate provision is more important, a more concentrated solution, incorporating large amounts of glucose polymers in concentrations of 150-200 g l-1, is to be preferred. To minimize the limitation imposed by the rate of gastric emptying, the volume of fluid in the stomach should be kept as high as is comfortable by frequent ingestion of small amounts of fluid. Addition of sodium, and perhaps also of potassium, may be important for rehydration after exercise.

Abstract:This study investigated the efficacy of ingesting an oral rehydration solution (DD) that has a high electrolyte concentration after exercise on fluid balance and cycling performance in comparison with a sports drink (SD) and water (WA). Nine healthy males aged 24 ± 2 years (mean ± SD), with peak oxygen uptake (VO2 peak) 55 ± 6 mL·kg−1·min−1 completed three experimental trials in a randomised manner ingesting WA, SD (carbohydrates: 62 g·L−1, sodium: 31 ± 3 mmol·L−1) or DD (carbohydrates: 33 g·L−1, sodium: 60 ± 3 mmol·L−1). On all trials, fluid was ingested during 75 min cycling at 65% VO2 peak (temperature: 30.4 ± 0.3 °C, relative humidity: 76 ± 1%, simulated wind speed: 8.0 ± 0.6 m·s−1) and during 2 h of recovery (temperature: 23.0 ± 1.0 °C, relative humidity: 67 ± 2%), with the total volume equivalent to 150% of sweat loss during the ride. A 45 min pre-load cycling time trial at a 65% VO2 peak followed by a 20 km time trial was conducted after a further 3 h of recovery. Fluid retention was higher with DD (30 ± 15%) than WA (−4 ± 19%; p < 0.001) and SD (10 ± 15%; p = 0.002). Mean ratings of palatability were similar among drinks (WA: 4.25 ± 2.60; SD: 5.61 ± 1.79; DD: 5.40 ± 1.58; p = 0.33). Although time trial performance was similar across all three trials (WA: 2365 ± 321 s; SD: 2252 ± 174 s; DD: 2268 ± 184 s; p = 0.65), the completion time was faster in eight participants with SD and seven participants with DD than with WA. Comparing SD with DD, completion time was reduced in five participants and increased in four participants. DD was more effective at restoring the fluid deficit during recovery from exercise than SD and WA without compromising the drink’s palatability with increased sodium concentration. Most individuals demonstrated better endurance exercise time trial performance with DD and SD than with WA.

Physiological effects of dehydration and rehydration with water and acidic or neutral carbohydrate electrolyte solutions

Abstract:Five healthy young men exercised on an ergocycle for six 25-min periods separated by 5-min rest intervals in a warm dry environment (36 degrees C). After 1 h of exercise without fluid intake, the subjects continued to be dehydrated or were rehydrated either with water (W) or with isosmotic electrolyte carbohydrate solutions, either acidic (AISO) or close to neutrality (NISO). The average amount of the fluid ingested progressively every 10 min (120 ml) at 20 degrees C was calculated so as to compensate for 80% of the whole body water loss due to exercise in the heat. Dehydration associated with hyperosmotic hypovolaemia elicited large increases in heart rate (HR), and in rectal temperature (Tre), while no decrease was found in either whole body or local sweat rates. Rehydration with water significantly reduced the observed disturbances, except for plasma osmolality and Na+ concentration which were significantly lower than normal. With both AISO and NISO there was no plasma volume reduction and osmolality increase. Although a plasma volume expansion was induced by NISO ingestion, the cardiac cost was not improved, as reflected by the absence of a decrease in HR. With NISO, sweating was not enhanced and Tre tended to remain higher. It is concluded that efficient rehydration requires the avoidance of plasma volume expansion at the expense of interstitial and intracellular rehydration. During rehydration by oral ingestion of fluid, the pH of the drink may be an important factor; its effect remains unclear, however.

Abstract:Introduction: This study compared the efficacy of three commercial oral rehydration solutions (ORS) for restoring fluid and electrolyte balance, after exercise-induced dehydration. Method: Healthy, active participants (N = 20; ♀ = 3; age ∼27 y, V˙O2peak ∼52 ml/kg/min) completed three randomised, counterbalanced trials whereby intermittent exercise in the heat (∼36°C, ∼50% humidity) induced ∼2.5% dehydration. Subsequently, participants rehydrated (125% fluid loss in four equal aliquots at 0, 1, 2, 3 h) with a glucose-based (G-ORS), sugar-free (Z-ORS) or amino acid-based sugar-free (AA-ORS) ORS of varying electrolyte composition. Urine output was measured hourly and capillary blood samples collected pre-exercise, 0, 2 and 5 h post-exercise. Sodium, potassium, and chloride concentrations in urine, sweat, and blood were determined. Results: Net fluid balance peaked at 4 h and was greater in AA-ORS (141 ± 155 ml) and G-ORS (101 ± 195 ml) than Z-ORS (-47 ± 208 ml; P ≤ 0.010). Only AA-ORS achieved positive sodium and chloride balance post-exercise, which were greater for AA-ORS than G-ORS and Z-ORS (P ≤ 0.006), as well as for G-ORS than Z-ORS (P ≤ 0.007) from 1 to 5 h. Conclusion: when provided in a volume equivalent to 125% of exercise-induced fluid loss, AA-ORS produced comparable/superior fluid balance and superior sodium/chloride balance responses to popular glucose-based and sugar-free ORS.
Hydration Strategies, Weight Change and Performance in a 161 km Ultramarathon

Abstract:To examine controversies about hydration strategies, participants (383 starters) of a 161 km ultramarathon (maximum temperature 39.0°C) underwent body weight measurements before, during and after the race; and completed a post-race questionnaire on drinking strategies and sodium supplementation use during 4 race segments. Drinking to thirst was the most common (p < 0.01) drinking strategy (used by 67.0% during at least one segment) and most runners (95.6%) used sodium supplementation during at least one segment. There was no difference in the extent of weight loss (mean 2.0-3.1%) or the weight change pattern when comparing groups using different hydration strategies. Among top-10 finishers, half had lost more than 2% of starting body weight by 90 km. We conclude that weight loss greater than 2% does not necessarily have adverse consequences on performance, and use of sodium supplements or drinking beyond thirst is not required to maintain hydration during ultra-endurance events with high thermal stress.

The Impact of Pre-Exercise Hydration Strategies on Athletic Performance and Recovery in High-Intensity Training

Abstract:Hydration plays a pivotal role in maintaining athletic performance and facilitating recovery, especially during high-intensity training (HIT). This study investigates the impact of different pre-exercise hydration strategies—water, electrolyte solutions, and carbohydrate-electrolyte sports drinks—on performance metrics and recovery outcomes in HIT. Sixty athletes (30 males and 30 females, aged 18-35) participated in a randomized controlled trial. Performance metrics, including time to exhaustion and power output, were measured at baseline and post-training. Recovery outcomes, such as muscle soreness and fatigue levels, were assessed 24 hours post-exercise. The results indicated that participants who consumed carbohydrate-electrolyte sports drinks demonstrated significantly better performance and recovery outcomes compared to those who consumed water or electrolyte solutions alone. Specifically, the sports drink group showed the greatest improvements in time to exhaustion and power output, as well as the lowest muscle soreness and fatigue scores. These findings underscore the importance of incorporating carbohydrates and electrolytes in pre-exercise hydration strategies to enhance athletic performance and expedite recovery. The study provides practical recommendations for athletes and coaches to optimize hydration practices, supporting better training outcomes and overall performance.

Abstract:Background: Endurance events have experienced a significant increase in growth in the new millennium and are popular activities for participation globally. Sports nutrition recommendations for endurance exercise however remains a complex issue with often opposing views and advice by various health care professionals. Methods: A PubMed/Medline search on the topics of endurance, athletes, nutrition, and performance was undertaken and a review performed summarizing the current evidence concerning macronutrients, hydration, and supplements as it pertains to endurance athletes. Results: Carbohydrate and hydration recommendations have not drastically changed in years, while protein and fat intake have been traditionally underemphasized in endurance athletes. Several supplements are commercially available to athletes, of which, few may be of benefit for endurance activities, including nitrates, antioxidants, caffeine, and probiotics, and are reviewed here. The topic of “train low,” training in a low carbohydrate state is also discussed, and the post-exercise nutritional “recovery window” remains an important point to emphasize to endurance competitors. Conclusions: This review summarizes the key recommendations for macronutrients, hydration, and supplements for endurance athletes, and helps clinicians treating endurance athletes clear up misconceptions in sports nutrition research when counseling the endurance athlete.

Biological Treatment of Cyanide by Using Klebsiella pneumoniae Species.

Abstract:In this study, optimization conditions for cyanide biodegradation by Klebsiella pneumoniae strain were determined to be 25 °C, pH=7 and 150 rpm at the concentration of 0.5 mM potassium cyanide in the medium. Additionally, it was found that K. pneumoniae strain is not only able to degrade potassium cyanide, but also to degrade potassium hexacyanoferrate(II) trihydrate and sodium ferrocyanide decahydrate with the efficiencies of 85 and 87.5%, respectively. Furthermore, this strain degraded potassium cyanide in the presence of different ions such as magnesium, nickel, cobalt, iron, chromium, arsenic and zinc, in variable concentrations (0.1, 0.25 and 0.5 mM) and as a result the amount of the bacteria in the biodegradation media decreased with the increase of ion concentration. Lastly, it was also observed that sterile crude extract of K. pneumoniae strain degraded potassium cyanide on the fifth day of incubation. Based on these results, it is concluded that both culture and sterile crude extract of K. pnemoniae will be used in cyanide removal from different wastes.
Nutrition for Endurance Athletes

Abstract:A well-balanced, adequate dietary intake is essential for both health and athletic performance. Compared to sedentary subjects endurance athletes have higher energy demands and subsequently higher macronutrient requirements. Especially carbohydrate requirement is higher than in non-active individuals (approx. 3.5 g / kg / d) to ensure energy availability during exercise and to replenish glycogen stores after exercise. During weeks of moderately intense exercise a carbohydrate intake of 5-7 g / kg / d is recommended. Glycogen synthesis follows a biphasic manner with an insulin-independent rapid synthesis rate during early regeneration and an insulin-dependent slow synthesis rate in the later regeneration period. Therefore, elite athletes should ingest 1.2-1.5 g / kg / h of carbohydrates with a moderate to high glycemic index immediately after exercise. In some cases high carbohydrate intake may result in a conflict with sports specific requirement of a low body weight. However, a minimum of 5 % body fat for male and 12 % for female athletes is recommended to avoid health issues. During endurance exercise an adequate fluid and electrolyte intake is essential to prevent both dehydration and exercise-induced hyponatremia. Fluid replacement recommendations should be assessed on an individual basis by considering exercise intensity and duration, temperature, sex and body weight. For each hour of exercise the consumption of 400-800 ml containing a minimum of 450 mg sodium per litre is recommended.

Abstract:Many young athletes train and compete under conditions that put their body fluid balance at risk, and hypohydration is usually the major concern. Another less frequent condition is hyperhydration that—if accompanied by other risk factors—may cause hyponatremia. Water and electrolyte losses during physical activities occur primarily from sweat. Such losses have been identified mostly in active (but nonathletic) young populations under laboratory settings. Studies have been trying to estimate fluid losses in the athletic population under field conditions, taking into account the sport modality and environmental conditions. Besides these external conditions, young athletes adopt different drinking attitudes, which may depend on knowledge, education, and the opportunities to drink during the break periods as well as fluid availability. Focusing on the young athlete, this review will discuss water and sodium losses from sweat, the effects of hypohydration on performance, and fluid intake attitudes within and during practices and competitions. Some considerations related to the methods of identifying hydration status and guidelines are also given, with the understanding that they should be individually adapted for the athlete and activity. The young athlete, parents, coaches, and athletic/health professionals should be aware of such information to prevent fluid imbalances and the consequent hazardous effects on performance and health.
Anaerobic performance when rehydrating with water or commercially available sports drinks during prolonged exercise in the heat.

Abstract:The effects that rehydrating drinks ingested during exercise may have on anaerobic exercise performance are unclear. This study aimed to determine which of four commercial rehydrating drinks better maintains leg power and force during prolonged cycling in the heat. Seven endurance-trained and heat-acclimatized cyclists pedaled for 120 min at 63% maximum oxygen consumption in a hot, dry environment (36 degrees C; 29% humidity, 1.9 m.s-1 airflow). In five randomized trials, during exercise, subjects drank 2.4 +/- 0.1 L of (i) mineral water (WAT; San Benedetto), (ii) 6% carbohydrate-electrolyte solution (Gatorade lemon), (iii) 8% carbohydrate-electrolyte solution (Powerade Citrus Charge), (iv) 8% carbohydrate-electrolyte solution with lower sodium concentration than other sports drinks (Aquarius orange), or (v) did not ingest any fluid (DEH). Fluid balance, rectal temperature (Trec), maximal cycling power (Pmax), and leg maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVC) were measured. During DEH, subjects lost 3.7 +/- 0.2% of initial body mass, whereas subjects lost only 0.8% +/- 0.1% in the other trials (p < 0.05). Final Trec was higher in DEH than in the rest of the trials (39.4 +/- 0.1 degrees C vs. 38.7 +/- 0.1 degrees C; p < 0.05). Pmax was similar among all trials. Gatorade and Powerade preserved MVC better than DEH (-3.1% +/- 2% and -3.8% +/- 2% vs. -11% +/- 2%, p < 0.05), respectively, whereas WAT and Aquarius did not (-6% +/- 2%). Compared with DEH, rehydration with commercially available sports drinks during prolonged exercise in the heat preserves leg force, whereas rehydrating with water does not. However, low sodium concentration in a sports drink seems to preclude its ergogenic effects on force.

Partial and Complete Fluid Replacement Maintains Exercise Performance in a Warm Environment Following Prolonged Cold-Water Immersion

J Strength Cond Res 38(2): 290–296, 2024—Special warfare operators may be exposed to prolonged immersion before beginning a land-based mission. This immersion will result in substantial hypohydration because of diuresis. This study tested the hypothesis that both partial and full postimmersion rehydration would maintain performance during exercise in the heat. Seven men (23 ± 2 years; V̇ o 2max : 50.8 ± 5.3 ml·kg −1 ·min −1 ) completed a control trial (CON) without prior immersion and 3 immersion (18.0°C) trials without rehydration (NO) or with partial (HALF) or full (FULL) rehydration. After immersion, subjects completed a 60-minute weighted ruck march (20.4 kg; 5.6 kph) and a 15-minute intermittent exercise protocol (iEPT) in a warm environment (30.0°C and 50.0% relative humidity). The primary outcome was distance (km) covered during the iEPT. A priori statistical significance was set to p ≤ 0.05. Immersion resulted in 2.3 ± 0.4% loss of body mass in all immersion trials ( p < 0.01). Distance covered during the first 13-minute interval run portion of iEPT was reduced in the NO rehydration trial (1.59 ± 0.18 km) compared with all other conditions (CON: 1.88 ± 0.18 km, p = 0.03; HALF: 1.80 ± 0.18 km, p < 0.01; FULL: 1.86 ± 0.28 km, p = 0.01). During the final 2 minutes of the iEPT, distance in the NO rehydration trial (0.31 ± 0.07 km) was reduced compared with the FULL rehydration trial (0.37 ± 0.07 km; p < 0.01) but not compared with CON (0.35 ± 0.07 km; p = 0.09) or HALF (0.35 ± 0.07 km; p = 0.08). Both partial and full postimmersion fluid replacement maintained intermittent exercise performance and should be applied as rehydration strategies.

Abstract:Current American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) guidelines recommend replacing 150% of sweat losses between training bouts separated by ≤12 hours, but little evidence exists concerning the implications of this strategy for runners. Participants (n = 13) in this study replaced 75% (1637 ± 372 mL) or 150% (3099 ± 850 mL) of sweat losses following an outdoor evening run (∼75 minutes; Wet-bulb-globe temperature (WBGT) = ∼27°C) and consumed a standardised evening meal and breakfast before completing an outdoor (WBGT = ∼23°C) 10-km time-trial the following morning. Urine was collected between runs and urine specific gravity (USG) was assessed pre-run. Significant differences were found in pre-run body mass (75% = 69.6 ± 9.2; 150% = 70.1 ± 9.3 kg; P = 0.02) and USG (75% = 1.026 ± 0.005; 150% = 1.014 ± 0.007; P < 0.001). Heart rate during 10-km run (168 ± 14 versus 168 ± 12 beats min(-1)) and post-run intestinal temperature (39.08 ± 0.52 versus 39.00 ± 0.70 °C) did not differ for 75% and 150%, respectively, despite an ∼3% performance improvement (75% = 47.28 ± 6.64; 150% = 45.93 ± 6.04 minutes; P = 0.001) due to a faster pace in the second half of the run with 150% replacement. Session rate of perceived exertion (RPE) was lower (P = 0.02) during 150% (7.5 ± 1.3) versus 75% (8.4 ± 0.9). Reluctant drinkers potentially hinder training quality between evening and morning runs in the heat, but copious urine production and difficulty in consuming recommended fluid volumes suggest fluid replacement <150% may be more ideal.

Fluid and electrolyte losses associated with working/exercising for prolonged periods in thermally stressful environments

Abstract:When working or exercising for prolonged periods in hot and humid environmental conditions, high sweat rates can lead to dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. It is well established that these progressive conditions will impair work and exercise performance in both athletes and manual workers. Consequences of inadequate fluid and electrolyte replacement in both cases can range from uncomfortable heat cramps, to more serious cases of heat illness, which in extreme cases can be fatal. Fluid loss accompanying work or exercise in the heat has received extensive focus in the literature over the last 20 years, however, the sodium losses associated with large sweat losses have received far less attention. Due to the well-established link between high salt intake and hypertension, the World Health Organisation recommends that on a global scale individuals consume less than 5g salt per day. While these recommendations may be appropriate for the general population, the athlete or manual worker has substantially greater sodium losses and therefore is hypothesised to require a higher sodium intake. One of the principle aims of this thesis is to document sweat sodium losses and provide appropriate guidelines for fluid and sodium replacement in both manual workers and endurance athletes. Chronic hyponatremia is a condition previously reported to occur in military personnel where over several weeks sodium intake is inadequate to replace large sweat losses. To date no previous study has investigated the incidence of chronic hyponatremia in a group of manual workers. Maintaining adequate fluid and electrolyte balance is essential to this population who are often working for prolonged periods in hot and humid environments. To investigate the incidence of chronic hyponatremia in this population, plasma sodium levels were assessed at the end of both the summer and winter months. Despite the similar dietary sodium intake across the year, the incidence of chronic hyponatremia at the end of the summer period was significantly greater than at the end of the winter period. This was postulated to be due to the higher sweat losses as a result of the more harsh environmental conditions during the summer months. Dietary sodium intake was found to be inadequate to replace the estimated sodium losses due to the high proportion of rice and legumes consumed with very low sodium content. Increasing the sodium content of fluid and food provided to workers is warranted and may reduce the incidence of work related illness and accidents in this population. In the athlete population there has been a great deal of focus in the literature on the need to adequately replace fluid losses that occur as a result of heavy sweating. Far less attention has been on the need to replace the sweat sodium losses accompanying this, with few studies documenting sodium losses in an endurance athlete population. There is large inter-individual variation in both sweat rate and sweat sodium loss in athletes with both factors being influenced by exercise intensity and duration, environmental conditions, physical fitness, size and number of individual sweat glands as well as the acclimatisation state of an athlete. It is therefore difficult to establish general recommendations for sodium intake in this population. In some athletes sodium losses can be replaced by normal dietary intake, whereas in other cases increased dietary intake is essential to replace large sweat sodium losses. In order to accurately determine sweat electrolyte losses, comprehensive laboratory based assessment is required, however this is often not practical. Chapter 4 and 5 of this thesis determined the effect of exercise intensity, seasonal heat acclimatisation and physical training status on fluid and electrolyte losses in a group of endurance athletes. The results from both of these studies predicts that endurance athletes with high sweat rates are at risk of both sodium and potassium deficiency, which may impair performance, if dietary intake is not sufficient to replace losses. Simple measures such as pre and post exercise weighing may be a useful tool in determining individual fluid and sodium intake requirements when comprehensive laboratory assessment is not practical. Based on the findings from these three studies, fluid and electrolyte replacement recommendations have been made for both manual workers and athletes working and exercising in thermally stressful environments.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION: This study compared 2 commercially available beverages, an oral rehydration solution (ORS; 60.9 mM Na+; 3.4% carbohydrate) and a sports drink (SDS; 18.4 mM Na+; 5.9% carbohydrate), on hydration and metabolism during submaximal exercise in the heat.METHODS: Ten male subjects completed two 90-min exercise trials (39ºC, 30%) of walking at 50% VO2max followed by a 30-min rest period in the heat while wearing wildland firefighter personal protective clothing. After 45 min of exercise, fluid delivery by either ORS or SDS replaced 150% of sweat loss. Subjects continued the exercise for 45 additional minutes followed by a 30-min rest period. Blood samples were collected pre-exercise (0 min), post-exercise (90 min), and post-trial (120 min) to measure plasma volume (%) and blood glucose (mg·dL-1). Expired gases were collected twice for 3 min for substrate oxidation.RESULTS: The sweat rate and percent dehydration did not differ between the groups (P=0.86 and P=0.79, respectively). Changes in plasma volume did not differ (P=0.55). Hemoglobin levels significantly increased in both groups post-trial (P=0.009). Blood glucose was significantly greater post-trial in SDS versus ORS (116±19 vs 103±13 mg·dL-1, respectively; P=0.01). Fat oxidation was lower post-exercise in SDS vs ORS (0.38±0.1 vs 0.47±0.2 g·min-1, respectively; P=0.049).CONCLUSIONS: These data indicate no difference in fluid retention between ORS or SDS when supplemented during exercise in the heat. This implies that fluid volume, and not drink contents, may be more important when ingested during exercise in a hot environment.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of beverage temperature and composition on weight retention and fluid balance upon voluntary drinking following exercise induced-dehydration. Eight men who were not acclimated to heat participated in four randomly ordered testing sessions. In each session, the subjects ran on a treadmill in a chamber maintained at 37℃ without being supplied fluids until 2% body weight reduction was reached. After termination of exercise, they recovered for 90 min under ambient air conditions and received one of the following four test beverages: 10℃ water (10W), 10℃ sports drink (10S), 26℃ water (26W), and 26℃ sports drink (26S). They consumed the beverages ad libitum. The volume of beverage consumed and body weight were measured at 30, 60, and 90 min post-recovery. Blood samples were taken before and immediately after exercise as well as at the end of recovery in order to measure plasma parameters and electrolyte concentrations. We found that mean body weight decreased by 1.8-2.0% following exercise. No differences in mean arterial pressure, plasma volume, plasma osmolality, and blood electrolytes were observed among the conditions. Total beverage volumes consumed were 1,164 ± 388, 1,505 ± 614, 948 ± 297, and 1,239 ± 401 ml for 10W, 10S, 26W, and 26S respectively (P > 0.05). Weight retention at the end of recovery from dehydration was highest in 10S (1.3 ± 0.7 kg) compared to 10W (0.4 ± 0.5 kg), 26W (0.4 ± 0.4 kg), and (0.6 ± 0.4 kg) (P < 0.005). Based on these results, carbohydrate/electrolyte-containing beverages at cool temperature were the most favorable for consumption and weight retention compared to plain water and moderate temperature beverages.

Abstract:This study aimed to compare the physiologic effects of regular water consumption to those of electrolyte drink consumption in exercise capacity and recovery after exhaustive exercise. The participants were 10 healthy young men who exercised on a treadmill before and after receiving regular water and an electrolyte drink (3RINK) four weeks later. A 250-mL fluid volume was ingested 30 min before exercise and immediately after. Body composition, water metabolizing hormones, and body electrolytes were analyzed at rest (R), immediately after exercise (P0), and 1 h after exercise (P1). Moreover, serum lactic acid levels were measured to determine recovery. Total body water, intracellular, and extracellular water levels were higher after consuming 3RINK at P0 than at R. There was no interaction effect between the types of fluids and antidiuretic hormone, aldosterone, and renin levels. Hematocrit levels showed an interaction effect between the type of fluid and period. Sodium levels were significantly different between the different types of fluids at P0 and P1. Finally, an interaction effect was noted between each type of fluid and serum lactate levels. Thus, 3RINK intake before and after exhaustive exercise increased body capacity to retain water, improved exercise ability, and reduced exercise-related fatigue.
