Abstract:A series of carboranylamidinate-based 3d metal complexes are reported. Treatments of 3d metal dichlorides (CoCl2, NiCl2(DME), CuCl2) with the lithium salts of carboranylamidines (Cab(N)H) generate the mononuclear C,N-coordinated complexes [(RN=C(closo-1,2-C2B10H10)-(NHR)](2)M (1-6; M = Co, Ni, Cu; R = iPr, Cy) in moderate yields, respectively. These complexes have similar structures in the solid state, in which the metal atom is coordinated to two nitrogen atoms and bonded to two cage carbon atoms in a distorted-tetrahedral geometry. As a noninnocent ligand, Cab(N)H can be modified to produce carboranylamidinate thiol (Cab(N)SH) and nido derivatives Dcab(N)H (9, 10), respectively. Reaction of cupric acetate with 1 equiv of CabNSH gave the binuclear complexes {[RN=C(closo-1,2-C2B10H10)(NHR)]SCu}(2) (R = iPr (7), Cy (8)) in 66 and 63% yields, respectively. The structure of 7 shows the formation of a Cu-Cu bond, and the geometry of the Cu2S2 core is planar. The zwitterionic nickel dicarbollide complexes (Dcab(N))Ni(PPh3)Cl (11, 12) were prepared by reactions of the lithium salts of Dcab(N)H (9, 10) with NiCl2(PPh3)(2) in THF. All complexes were characterized by elemental analysis and IR and NMR spectroscopy. The structures of 1, 3-5, 7, and 9-11 were further confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

Abstract:A chainlike coordination polymer [Gd(dca)3(phen)2(H2O)](n) (dca = dicyanamide, phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) has been synthesized, and its crystal structure was characterized by X-ray single-crystal diffraction. The crystal belongs to monoclinic, space group P2(1)/n with a = 10.6581(13), b = 15.6129(16), c = 17.733(3) A, beta = 90.499(5)degrees, V = 2950.8(7) A(3), Z = 4, C30H18GdN13O, M-r = 733.82, D-c = 1.652 g/cm(2) F(000) 1444, gimel(MoK alpha) = 0.71073 A, mu = 2.297 mm(-1), R = 0.0258 and wR = 0.0616 for 4570 observed reflections (I > 2 sigma(I)). In this complex, the gadolinium atom is nine-coordinated by four dca anions, two chelated phen ligands and one H2O molecule in a distorted tricapped trigonal prism. Two bridging dca anions connect the Gd(III) ions yielding chainlike polymers that are linked by hydrogen bonds and pi-pi interactions to form a three-dimensional network.

Abstract:Reactions of anhydrous LnCl(3) (Ln = Nd, Gd, Dy, Er, Yb) with 2 equiv of LiCp' in THF afford the lanthanocene complexes Of CP'(2)Ln(mu-Cl)(2)Li(THF)(2) (CP' = eta(5)-t-BuC5H4, Ln = Nd (1), Gd (2), Dy (3), Er (4), Yb (5); Cp'= 1,3-eta(5)-t-Bu2C5H3, Ln = Nd (6), Gd (7), Dy (8), Er (9), Yb (10)). The molecular structures of 7 and 8 were characterized by X-ray crystallographic analysis. In these complexes, two Cp' ring centroids and two it-bridging chloride atoms around the lanthanide atoms form a distorted tetrahedron. The insertion of elemental chalcogen E (E = S, Se) into Li-C bonds of dilithium o-carborane in THF solution afforded dimers of dilithium. dichalcogenolate carboranes, [(THF)(3)LiE2C2B10H10Li(THF)](2) (E = S (12a), Se (12b)), which were confirmed by a crystal structure analysis. Reactions Of Cp'(2)Ln(mu-Cl)(2)Li(THF)(2) (1-10) with 12a or 12b gave dinuclear complexes of the formula [Li(THF)(4)](2)[Cp'(2)LnE(2)C(2)B(10)H(10)](2) (Cp'= eta(5)-t-BuC5H4, E = S, Ln = Nd (13a), Gd (14a), Dy (15a), Er (16a), Yb (17a); E = Se, Ln = Nd (13b), Gd (14b), Dy (15b), Er (16b), Yb (17b); Cp'= 1,3-eta(5)-t-Bu2C5H3 E = S, Ln = Nd (18a), Gd (19a), Dy (20a), Er (21a), Yb (22a); E = Se, Ln = Nd (18b), Gd (19b), Dy (20b), Er (21b), Yb (22b)). According to the X-ray structure analyses, the dianions of 13a and 13b contain two o-carborane dichalcogenolate bridges, and each CP'2Ln fragment is attached to one terminal and two bridging chalcogen ligands. The central Ln(2)E(2) four-membered ring is not planar, and the direct metal-metal interaction is absent.

Abstract:A combination of Ga(i) centers as important building blocks and scaffolds containing N-heterocyclic imines gives new insights into low-valent Ga chemistry. In this study, a mixture of (LNLi)-N-Dip (L-Dip = 1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-imidazolin-2-ylidene), (BuOK)-Bu-t, and Cp*Ga (Cp* = pentamethylcyclopentadienyl) in toluene afforded [(LN)-N-Dip-Ga](2) (1) via salt metathesis. X-ray structure analysis of 1 revealed a four-membered Ga2N2 ring, and DFT studies indicated the presence of a lone pair at each Ga center. In addition, compound 1 demonstrated diverse reactivities towards methyl trifluoromethanesulfonate, diphenyl disulfide, 9,10-phenanthrenequinone, and ECl2 (E = Ge or Sn).

Abstract:The synthesis and structural characterization of new derivatives of [B12H12]2− is of fundamental interest and is expected to allow for extended applications. Herein we report on the synthesis of a series of amidine, amide, urea and isocyanate derivatives based on the amino-closo-dodecaborate anion [B12H11NH3]−. Their structures have been confirmed by spectroscopic methods, and nine crystal structures are presented.

Synthesis of {CB11} Monocarborane Sulfonamides by B2-Selective Rhodium-Catalyzed B-H Activation

Abstract:The synthesis of monocarborane sulfonamides is reported. The methodology relies on coupling of the anionic {CB11} boron cluster to sulfonyl azides. Under rhodium catalysis and with the assistance of a pyridine or pyrimidine directing group at the C1 position, the cluster undergoes B-H activation. Conditions have been identified that lead to B2-selective mono-sulfonamidation with concomitant loss of N-2. The protocol requires no additional ligand, oxidant or base and enables B-N bond formation with various monocarborane and sulfonyl azide inputs. The new products possess the structure [1-(heteroaryl)-2-(NHSO2Ar)-CB11H10](-) and have been fully characterized by NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. In addition, three solid state structures confirm the particular B2 substitution pattern. Furthermore, the stoichiometric reaction of the pyridinyl monocarborane precursor with Rh(III) affords a cyclometalated complex with a direct B-Rh bond that has also been characterized by X-ray crystallography.
Ultrasonic-assisted solution-phase synthesis of gadolinium benzene-1,4-dicarboxylate hierarchical architectures and their solid-state thermal transformation

Abstract:Well-dispersed hierarchical straw-sheaf-like architectures of [Gd(1,4-BDC)(1.5)(H2O)(2)] (BDC2- = benzene-1,4-dicarboxylate) have been successfully synthesized via an ultrasonic-assisted solution-phase method in the presence of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP, 30 K). The as-obtained products were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Systematic investigations have been performed on the factors influencing the morphology of [Gd(1,4-BDC)(1.5)(H2O)(2)] nanostructures, such as the concentration of Na2BDC and Gd(NO3)(3)center dot 6H(2)O, the ultrasonic time and power, as well as the amount of PVP. A possible mechanism responsible for the formation of hierarchical architectures was proposed. The as-obtained Eu3+- and Tb3+-doped [Gd(1,4-BDC)(1.5)(H2O)(2)] products show strong characteristic red and green emissions under ultraviolet excitation. Furthermore, the straw-sheaf shaped Gd2O3 can be obtained via a thermal decomposition method using the Gd-1,4-BDC complex as a precursor.

Treatment of Cp(2)Ln(n)Bu (Ln = Er (1), Y (2), Gd (3)) with N,N-di-tert-butylcarbodiimide results in monoinsertion of carbodiimide into the Ln-C sigma-bond to yield the title compounds Cp(2)Ln[(BuN)-Bu-t-C(Bu-n) - (NBu)-Bu-t] (Ln = Er (4), Y (5), Gd (6)). Complexes 4-6 were characterized by elemental analysis and IR and mass spectroscopies. The structures of complexes 4 and 5 were determined through X-ray single-crystal diffraction analysis. It is shown that compound 5 is a fine catalyst for cyclotrimerization of phenyl isocyanate.

Abstract:The first carbocyclic gallylene [(ADC)2Ga(GaI2)] and bis-gallylene [(ADC)Ga]2 (ADC = PhC{N(Dipp)C}2; Dipp = 2,6-iPr2C6H3) featuring a central C4Ga2 ring annulated between two 1,3-imidazole rings are prepared by KC8 reductions of [(ADC)GaI2]2. Treatment of [(ADC)Ga]2 with Fe2(CO)9 affords complex [(ADC)GaFe(CO)4]2 in which each Ga(I) atom serves as a two-electron donor. [(ADC)Ga]2 activates white phosphorus (P4) and the Csp2–F bond of aryl fluorides (ArF) to yield compounds [(ADC)Ga(P4)]2 and cis-/trans-[ADC)GaF(Ar)]2, respectively. [(ADC)Ga]2 undergoes oxidation with (Me2S)AuCl to give [(ADC)GaCl2]2, while with PhN=NPh it forms [1+4]-cycloaddition product [(ADC)GaN(Ph)N=C6H5]2 by the dearomatization of one of the phenyl rings.

Lanthanide dimers in coordination chains constructed by sole dicarboxylate ligand for single-molecule magnet behavior and magnetocaloric effect

Abstract:The solvothermal reaction of Dy(III) and Gd(III) ions with 2,5-di-hydroxy-benzene-1,4-di-carboxylic acid (H(4)dhbdc) produced two new isostructural lanthanide(III) coordination chains with the general formula {[Ln(2)(H(2)dhbdc)(3)(H2O)(8)]<middle dot>6H(2)O}(n) [Ln = Dy (<bold>1</bold>) and Gd (<bold>2</bold>)]. The chains consist of carboxylate-bridged dilanthanide(III) units linked by H(2)dhbdc(2-) ligands in an end-to-end bridging mode. The Dy3+ and Gd3+ ions are located in slightly distorted biaugmented trigonal prism (C-2v) and triangular dodecahedron (D-2d) coordination environments, respectively. Magnetic studies reveal the extremely weak antiferromagnetic interaction (J = -0.041 cm(-1)) between the magnetically isotropic Gd-III ions in <bold>2</bold>. The dysprosium analogue was found to exhibit single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior with a prominent QTM effect under zero dc field, which is largely due to large single-ion magnetic anisotropy of individual Dy3+ ions and weak antiferromagnetic interaction. For the gadolinium chain, the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) was observed with a magnetic entropy change of 20.2 J kg(-1) K (-) (1). These results demonstrate a dicarboxylate synthetic route for the preparation of coordination polymers containing dilanthanide units for SMM and MCE applications.
Facile Construction of the Guanidine Substituent or Guanidinate Anionic Ligand Through Addition of the Adjacent Amino Group to Carbodiimide

Abstract:The reaction of N,N'-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCCI) with [Cp2Yb(o-H2NC6H4S)](2) (Cp = C5H5) (1) forms the monomer product Cp2Yb[SC6H4N=C(NHCy)(2)] (2), indicating that the adjacent NH2 group can add to the C=N double bonds of carbodiimide to construct a neutral guanidine group. When DCCI reacts with [Cp2Y(o-H2NC6H4S)](2)center dot 2THF (4), a dimer product [CpY(mu-eta(2):eta(1)-SC6H4N=C(NHCy)NCy)(THF)](2) (5) was isolated, through the amino group addition and cyclopentadienyl elimination. Interestingly, on treatment of 4 with one or two equivalent of (PrN)-Pr-l=C=(NPr)-Pr-l at the same conditions gave an amino group partial addition product CpY(THF)[mu-eta(2):eta(1)-SC6H4N=C-((NHPr)-Pr-i)(NPr)-Pr-i)](mu-eta(2):eta(1)-SC6H4NH2)YCp2 center dot THF (6), where only one NH2 group can add to the C=N double bonds of carbodiimide molecule, another one is remained. However, when we extended this reaction to the gadolinium complex, a novel co-crystalline compound {Cp2Gd[SC6H4N=C(NHCy)(2)]}center dot{CpGd(THF)[mu-eta(2):eta(1)-SC6H4N=C(NHCy)NCy)][mu-eta(2)-SC6H4NH2]GdCp2 center dot THF} (8) was obtained from the reaction of [Cp2Gd(o-H2NC6H4S)]2 (7) with DCCI. In order to investigate the sequence of addition and the elimination of the cyclopentadienyl group, a deprotonation reaction of the addition product has also been studied. Reaction of CpYb[SC6H4NC((NHPr)-Pr-i)(2)](2)(THF) (9), formed by reaction of Cp3Yb with two equivalent of o-aminothiophenol, and subsequently with 2 equiv. of (PrN)-Pr-i=C=(NPr)-Pr-i, with one equiv. of Cp3Yb gave a cyclopentadienyl elimination product [CpYb(mu-eta(2):eta(1)-SC6H4N=C((NHPr)-Pr-i)(NPr)-Pr-i)(THF)](2) (3). This result reveals that addition of the NH2 group to carbodiimide is prior to the elimination of cyclopentadienyl group. All of new compounds have been characterized by elemental analysis and spectroscopic properties. The solid-state structures of complexes 2, and 5-9 were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction.
A Facile One-Pot Approach to the Synthesis of Gd-Eu Based Metal-Organic Frameworks and Applications to Sensing of Fe3+ and Cr2O72− Ions

Abstract:Gadolinium metal-organic frameworks (Gd-MOFs) and Eu-doped Gd-MOFs have been synthesized through a one-pot green approach using commercially available reagents. The 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid (H2-BDC) and 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid (H2-NDC) were chosen as ditopic organic linkers to build the 3D structure of the network. The Gd-MOFs were characterized using powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), FT-IR spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and N2 adsorption–desorption analysis. The Gd-MOF structures were attributed comparing the XRD patterns, supported by the FT-IR spectra, with data reported in the literature for Ln-MOFs of similar lanthanide ionic radius. FE-SEM characterization points to the effect of the duration of the synthesis to a more crystalline and organized structure, with grain dimensions increasing upon increasing reaction time. The total surface area of the MOFs has been determined from the application of the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller method. The study allowed us to correlate the processing conditions and ditopic linker dimension to the network surface area. Abstract:The monoadducted malonic ester derivative of paramagnetic gadofullerene, Gd@C82[C(COOCH2CH3)2], was synthesized by the Bingel reaction, which Gd@C82 was reacted with diethyl bromomalonate in the presence of 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene. It was isolated and purified by high performance liquid chromatography, and subsequently hydrolyzed to yield water-soluble disodium salt form Gd@C82[C(COONa)2] by the Hirsch reaction. The disodium salt was purified by dialysis. The resulting materials were characterized by various measurements, such as matrix assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry, ultraviolet-visible near-infrared and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The aggregation behavior of the newly water-soluble nanoparticles was investigated by scanning electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering analysis. This presented synthetic methodology opens the avenue for the preparation of novel water-soluble malonate derivatives of paramagnetic Gd@C82, which are expected to be useful species with potential applications in biomedicine.
Synthesis, characterization and in vitro cytotoxicity of gallium(III)-dithiocarbamate complexes

Abstract:A library of homoleptic mononuclear Ga(III) complexes of general formula [Ga(DTC)3], where DTC is an alicyclic or a linear dithiocarbamate chelator, is reported. The complexes were prepared in high yield starting from Ga(NO3)3 · 6H2O and fully characterized by elemental analysis, IR, and NMR spectroscopy. Crystals of five of these complexes were obtained. The antitumor activity of newly synthesized compounds against a panel of human cancer cell lines was evaluated. The chemical nature of the DTC does not have a marked impact on the structural features of the final compound. X-ray crystal structure analyses revealed for all complexes a trigonal prismatic geometry with three identical chelating DTCs coordinating the Ga(III) ion. It is noteworthy that in complex 22, [Ga(NHEt)3] (NHEt = N-ethyldithiocarbamate), the asymmetric unit is formed by two independent and structurally different molecules. Cellular studies showed for all synthetized Ga-DTC complexes marked cytotoxic activity, even against human colon cancer cells that are less sensitive to cisplatin. Among the tested compounds, 6 ([Ga(CEPipDTC)3], CEPipDTC = (ethoxycarbonyl)-piperidinedithiocarbamate, and 21 ([Ga(Pr-13)3], PR13 = 4 and N-(2-ethoxy-2-oxoethyl)-N-methyldithiocarbamate), are very promising derivatives, but they have no selectivity towards cancer cells. Nevertheless, the obtained data provide a foundation for developing gallium-dithiocarbamate complexes as anticancer agents.

Abstract:Two butterfly‐like binuclear Gadolinium(III) (Gd) complex [Gd2(L1)2(H2L3)2(NO3)2] (1) and [Gd2(L2)2(H2L3)2(NO3)2] (2) were obtained by using 2‐hydroxybenzaldehyde or 2‐hydroxy‐1‐naphthaldehyde, 2‐aminophenol, pyridin‐2‐ylmethanamine and Gd(NO3)3·6H2O in CH3CN (H2L1 = (E)‐2‐((2‐hydroxybenzylidene)amino)phenol, H2L2 = (E)‐1‐(((2‐hydroxyphenyl)imino)methyl)naphthalen‐2‐ol, H2L3 = pyridin‐2‐ylmethanamine). Structural analysis suggests that all the ligands as protective units protect the central Gd(III) ions at the periphery. Magnetization studies exhibited magnetocaloric effect of 14.45 J·kg−1·K−1 at 4 K under ΔH = 7 T for complex 1 and 12.69 J·kg−1·K−1 at 2 K under ΔH = 7 T for complex 2. In complexes 1 and 2, although the coordination configurations are the same, the significant difference in MCE may be due to the adjustments of the peripheral ligands leading to changes in the coordination field strength. The electron affinity of the ligands can impact the interaction between the ligands and Gd(III) ions.

Abstract:A new quaternary mixed anion complex of gadolinium(Ⅲ), [Gd(CH3CH2COO)2(NO3)(phen)]2, was synthesized and structurally characterized. The ESR spectrum of the complex with effective g values of 5.314, 2.473 and 1.880 in polycrystalline powder at room temperature is quite different from the U spectrum. The coordination number of Gd3+ is nine with a monocapped square antiprism geometry. And the stacking effect was observed in the complex. The crystal of the complex belongs to triclinic with space group P 1, a=0.9626(4) nm, b=0.9732(4) nm, c=1.1758(5) nm, α=102.45(1)°, β=108.16(1)°, γ=96.68(2)°, V=1.0018(7) nm3, Z=2, Dc=1.80 g*cm-3, μ(MoKα)=33.63 mm-1, F(000)=530, GOF=1.80, R=0.023 and Rw=0.027.
