Abstract:ABSTRACT VirF, an AraC-like activator, is required to trigger a regulatory cascade that initiates the invasive program of Shigella spp., the etiological agents of bacillary dysentery in humans. VirF expression is activated upon entry into the host and depends on many environmental signals. Here, we show that the virF mRNA is translated into two proteins, the major form, VirF30 (30 kDa), and the shorter VirF21 (21 kDa), lacking the N-terminal segment. By site-specific mutagenesis and toeprint analysis, we identified the translation start sites of VirF30 and VirF21 and showed that the two different forms of VirF arise from differential translation. Interestingly, in vitro and in vivo translation experiments showed that VirF21 is also translated from a leaderless mRNA (llmRNA) whose 5′ end is at position +309/+310, only 1 or 2 nucleotides upstream of the ATG84 start codon of VirF21. The llmRNA is transcribed from a gene-internal promoter, which we identified here. Functional analysis revealed that while VirF30 is responsible for activation of the virulence system, VirF21 negatively autoregulates virF expression itself. Since VirF21 modulates the intracellular VirF levels, this suggests that transcription of the llmRNA might occur when the onset of the virulence program is not required. We speculate that environmental cues, like stress conditions, may promote changes in virF mRNA transcription and preferential translation of llmRNA. In bacteria of this genus, the activation of the invasive program involves a multitude of signals that act on all layers of the gene regulatory hierarchy. By controlling the essential genes for host cell invasion, VirF is the key regulator of the switch from the noninvasive to the invasive phenotype. Here, we show that the Shigella virF gene encodes two proteins of different sizes, VirF30 and VirF21, that are functionally distinct. The major form, VirF30, activates the genes necessary for virulence, whereas the minor VirF21, which shares the C-terminal two-thirds of VirF30, negatively autoregulates virF expression itself. VirF21 is transcribed from a newly identified gene-internal promoter and, moreover, is translated from an unusual leaderless mRNA. Micronutrients deficiences in patients after bariatric surgery

Abstract:Bariatric surgery is an effective option for managing obesity and has gained general acceptance among patients in recent years. Generally, despite the high caloric intake, a bad nutritional habit of obese people results in the deficiency of several vitamins, minerals, and trace elements essential for body metabolism and normal physiological processes. Additionally, the current bariatric surgical approaches such as sleeve gastrectomy (SG), Roux-en-Y-gastric bypass (RYGB), laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB), and jejunoileal bypass (JIB) can cause or exacerbate these deficiencies. Based on several reports, it appears that the various bariatric surgical procedures affect nutrient absorption differently. Being purely restrictive, LAGB and SG affect the absorption of iron, selenium, and vitamin B12, while RYGB, JIB, and biliopancreatic diversion have a more profound impact on the absorption of essential vitamins, minerals, and trace elements. Nutritional deficiencies in vitamins, minerals, and trace elements may follow bariatric surgery and are associated with clinical manifestations and diseases, including anemia, ataxia, hair loss, and Wernicke encephalopathy. The present review summarizes some of the major vitamin and micronutrient deficiencies associated with bariatric surgery, particularly those presented post-surgically. To avoid any adverse consequences of vitamin and trace element deficiency, proper monitoring and tests are recommended at any stage, from pre- to post-surgery (periodical check-up), followed by specific and individual nutritional supplementation treatments and a proper healthy diet.

Long-term prevalence of vitamin deficiencies after bariatric surgery: a meta-analysis

Abstract:Background: Bariatric surgery can lead to short-mid-term vitamin deficiencies, but the long-term vitamin deficiencies is unclear. This study aimed to conduct a meta-analysis regarding the long-term prevalence (≥ 5 years) of vitamin deficiencies after bariatric surgery. Methods: We searched the EMBASE, PubMed, and CENTRAL databases for clinical studies until June 2023. Meta-analysis, sensitivity, subgroup, and meta-regression analyses were performed. Results: This meta-analysis included 54 articles with follow-up duration ranging from 5 to 17 years. The most prevalent vitamin deficiencies after surgery were vitamin D (35.8%), followed by vitamin E (16.5%), vitamin A (13.4%), vitamin K (9.6%), and vitamin B12 (8.5%). Subgroup analyses showed that the prevalence of vitamin A and folate deficiencies increased with the follow-up time. Roux-en-Y gastric bypass had a higher rate of vitamin B12 deficiency than sleeve gastrectomy and biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch (BPD-DS). Studies conducted in Europe had higher vitamin A deficiency (25.8%) than in America (0.8%); Asian studies had more vitamin B12 but less vitamin D deficiency than European and American studies. Meta-regression analysis displayed that publication year, study design, preoperative age, BMI, and quality assessment score were not associated with vitamin A, B12, D, and folate deficiencies rate. Conclusion: A high prevalence of vitamin deficiencies was found after bariatric surgery in the long-term follow-up, especially vitamin D, E, A, K, and B12. The variation in study regions, surgical procedures, and follow-up time are associated with different postoperative vitamin deficiencies; it is necessary to develop more targeted vitamin supplement programs.

Abstract:<h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Background</h3><p>Patients with morbid obesity have a high risk of deficits in micronutrients, after bariatric surgery. The reasons why systematic use of multivitamin and trace element supplements cannot prevent all deficits are complex and should deserve more attention. Little is known about the influence of micronutrient deficits at surgery.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Aim</h3><p>This present study aimed to explore the deficit in vitamin B12 <em>vs</em> other micronutrients during the follow-up of a French cohort of cases with bariatric surgery under systematic multivitamin/trace elements supplementation and to determine whether it was influenced by clinical, metabolic characteristics at surgery.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Methods</h3><p>We prospectively enrolled obese patients with bariatric surgery (laparoscopic gastric bypass or laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy) between 2013 and 2018 (OBESEPI/ALDEPI Cohort, NCT02663388). They received a daily multivitamin/micronutrients supplement. Follow-up data at 4 visits, 2, 12, 18 and 24 months after surgery, were collected.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Results</h3><p>The highest rate of deficits was observed at visit 1 for vitamin D (35.7%), iron (21.9%) and folate (10.2%). Except B12, the deficits of all micronutrients decreased in later visits. In contrast, cases with vitamin B12 deficit decreased from 13.5% at surgery to 2.0% at visit 1, and increased in later visits, with a maximum of 12.0% at visit 3. Vitamin B12 concentration at surgery was the single predictor of B12 deficit at visit 3. It was also associated with age, and APRI score, an index of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), in multivariate analysis.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Conclusions</h3><p>The failure of systematic supplementation with multivitamin/trace elements tablets to prevent specific deficits illustrates the need for adapted specific supplementations, in some cases. The worsening of B12 deficit rate in the 18-24 months follow-up depends in part to low B12 at time of surgery. A special consideration should be devoted to this subset of patients.</p><p>The cohort study was registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT02663388.</p>

Investigating the prevalence of nutritional abnormalities in patients prior to and following bariatric surgery

Abstract:Aims: Bariatric surgery remains an effective treatment for the condition of obesity. However it predisposes patients to nutritional deficiencies and related complications. The aim of this study was to identify nutritional abnormalities, weight loss, adherence to supplements, and presence of gastrointestinal symptoms in a cohort of bariatric surgical patients. Methods: An analysis of the electronic medical records of patients attending a multidisciplinary private clinic in Sydney, Australia from August 2020 to August 2021 was conducted. Data on anthropometric measures, nutritional indices, adherence to supplements and gastrointestinal symptoms preoperatively and then at ≤6 months, 1 and 2 years or more postoperatively were collected. Results: A total of 231 patients were included in the study. The majority of patients were female (76.2%), with a sleeve gastrectomy (78.8%). Average preoperative BMI was 43.4 ± 7.1 kg/m2 . Weight loss ≥2 years postsurgery was 33.5 ± 12.4 kg. The most common abnormalities preoperatively were: C-reactive protein (47.7%), vitamin D (39%), B12 (31%), parathyroid hormone (27.6%) and ferritin (12.7%). Vitamin B12 (23.2%), parathyroid hormone (23%), vitamin D (17.7%) and ferritin (15.9%) remained common abnormalities postoperatively. Adherence to multivitamins was 90% in the first year following surgery, declining to 77% at ≥2 years. Gastrointestinal symptoms were predominantly present in the initial stages following surgery, manifesting thiamin deficiency in 6.5% of patients. Conclusions: Despite achieving durable weight loss, nutritional and related abnormalities remain an ongoing challenge for bariatric surgery. Adherence to nutrient supplements, gastrointestinal symptoms and related complications are important considerations in addressing the problem.

Abstract:Purpose of review: The continued success of bariatric surgery to treat obesity and obesity-associated metabolic conditions creates a need for a strong understanding of clinical nutrition both before and after these procedures. Recent findings: Surgically induced alteration of gastrointestinal physiology can affect the nutrition of individuals, especially among those who have undergone malabsorptive procedures. While uncommon, a subset of patients may develop protein-calorie malnutrition. In these cases, nutrition support should be tailored to the severity of malnutrition. Among all patients who undergo bariatric surgery, high rates of micronutrient deficiencies have been observed. To mitigate these deficiencies, empiric supplementation with multivitamins, calcium citrate, and vitamin D is generally recommended. Periodic surveillance should be performed for commonly deficient micronutrients, including thiamin (B1), folate (B9), cobalamin (B12), iron, and vitamin D. Following Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, serum levels of copper and zinc should also be monitored. In addition, lipid-soluble vitamins should be monitored following biliopancreatic diversion with/without duodenal switch.

Abstract:Bariatric surgery may increase the risk of iron, vitamin B12, folate and copper deficiencies, which can cause anaemia. This review aims to critique the evidence on the prevalence of these nutritional deficiencies and the impact on anaemia in the first 12 months after surgery. PRISMA and MOOSE frameworks, the NHMRC evidence hierarchy and The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics bias tool were used to systematically critique current literature. Seventeen studies reported on deficiency prevalence with the majority being of low quality. Important confounders to serum micronutrient levels were not adequately considered. Results on the prevalence of nutritional anaemias were also lacking. Further investigation into the prevalence of iron, vitamin B12, folate and copper deficiency and its impact on anaemia in bariatric surgery is needed.
Preoperative Micronutrient Repletion Strategies in Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery: A Systematic Review

Abstract:Background: Evidence is lacking to inform how micronutrient deficiencies should be prevented and treated before metabolic-bariatric surgery to optimize patient outcomes. Objective: This systematic review aimed to examine the effect of preoperative repletion strategies for micronutrient deficiencies on micronutrient biochemistry, quality of life, and complication rates among candidates for metabolic and bariatric surgery compared with usual care, alternate strategies, or no treatment. Methods: PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, and CENTRAL was searched in April 2024. A grey literature search was updated in April 2024 via Google search. Eligible observational and interventional studies were those that provided micronutrient repletion before the surgery and measured micronutrient status pre- and/or postsurgery. Studies with participants who were pregnant, lactating, or elected jejunocolic bypass, jejunoileal bypass, vertical banded gastroplasty, and biliopancreatic diversion were excluded. Risk of bias was assessed using the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Quality Criteria Checklist. Findings were narratively synthesized and the Grading of Recommendation, Assessment, Development and Evaluations was adopted when applicable. Twenty studies (n = 27 groups) were included (n = 15 observational; n = 5 interventional). Results: Strategies targeted vitamins A, D, E, B6, B12, C, thiamin, folate, calcium, iron, selenium, and zinc, including chronic dosing of oral supplements and multivitamins (n = 21), megadoses of oral supplements (n = 1), intramuscular injection (n = 1), intravenous infusion (n = 1), and a mix of injection and oral supplements (n = 3). Preoperative repletion strategies varied in efficacy. Chronic dosing of oral supplements increased vitamin D levels (n = 4 interventional studies; Grading of Recommendation, Assessment, Development and Evaluations rating: moderate). Multivitamins did not improve vitamin B12 status but improved status of vitamin B6, vitamin C, and folate. Iron infusion (n = 1) increased ferritin levels, despite small sample size and low adherence rate, whereas oral iron supplementation resulted in unchanged (n = 4) or decreased (n = 1) ferritin levels. Conclusions: Proactive and personalized micronutrient repletion schedules may decrease the risk of preoperative and early postoperative deficiency.

Abstract:Carbon isotope fractionation by structurally and catalytically distinct ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylases from one eucaryotic and four procaryotic organisms has been measured under nitrogen. The average fractionation for 40 experiments was -34.1 per thousand with respect to the delta(13)C of the dissolved CO(2) used, although average fractionations for each enzyme varied slightly: spinach carboxylase, -36.5 per thousand; Hydrogenomonas eutropha, -38.7 per thousand; Agmenellum quadruplicatum, -32.2 per thousand; Rhodospirillum rubrum, -32.1 per thousand; Rhodopseudomonas sphaeroides peak I carboxylase, -31.4 per thousand; and R. sphaeroides peak II carboxylase, -28.3 per thousand. The carbon isotope fractionation value was largely independent of method of enzyme preparation, purity, or reaction temperature, but in the case of spinach ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase fractionation, changing the metal cofactor used for enzyme activation had a distinct effect on the fractionation value. The fractionation value of -36.5 per thousand with Mg(2+) as activator shifted to -29.9 per thousand with Ni(2+) as activator and to -41.7 per thousand with Mn(2+) as activator. These dramatic metal effects on carbon isotope fractionation may be useful in examining the catalytic site of the enzyme.
Zinc Deficiency After Bariatric Surgery: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Abstract:Bariatric surgery has become an effective method for treating severe obesity and its related complications. While the effectiveness and safety of BS have been widely confirmed, micronutrient deficiency has emerged as a long-term complication after surgery. Literature was collected through online searches of PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and Embase databases, as well as manual searches. A total of 15 studies, with a sample size of 2993 cases, were included. The studies found that the risk of zinc deficiency increased gradually at 6 months, 1 year, and 2 years after surgery compared to pre-surgery levels. Subgroup analysis revealed that serum zinc levels decreased by 9.40% (95% CI − 16.44%, − 2.36%) at 1 year after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, 9.33% (95% CI − 10.73%, − 7.92%) after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and one-anastomosis gastric bypass, and 22.30% (95% CI − 30.14%, − 14.46%) after biliopancreatic diversion/duodenal switch. Meanwhile, the total prevalence of zinc deficiency at 1 year after surgery was 26.1%. In conclusion, zinc deficiency worsens and serum zinc levels decrease after bariatric surgery. It is recommended that patients undergoing weight loss surgery undergo regular monitoring of serum zinc levels and receive timely zinc supplementation therapy.

Abstract:A series of deletions from the carboxyl terminus of the 23-kD subunit of the photosynthetic oxygen-evolving complex OE23 revealed that these truncations result in various degrees of inhibition of translocation across thylakoid membranes and their subsequent assembly to the oxygen-evolving complex. Import of in vitro translated precursors across the chloroplast envelopes was not inhibited by these truncations. Time-course studies of the import of truncated OE23 precursors into intact chloroplasts revealed that the stromal intermediate was subsequently translocated into the thylakoid lumen, where it was processed to a smaller size and rapidly degraded. In contrast to the full-length OE23 intermediate, the truncated intermediate forms that accumulated in the stroma as a result of de-energization of thylakoid membranes could be found associated with the membrane rather than free in the stroma. Protease digestion experiments revealed that the deletions evidently altered the folded conformation of the protein. These results suggest that the carboxyl-terminal portion of the OE23 precursor is important for the maintenance of an optimal structure for import into thylakoids, implying that the efficient translocation of OE23 requires the protein to be correctly folded. In addition, the rapid degradation of the truncated forms of the processed OE23 within the lumen indicates that a protease (or proteases) active in the lumen can recognize and remove misfolded polypeptides.
Nutritional consequences of bariatric surgery - prevention, detection and management

Abstract:Purpose of review: Bariatric surgery is an effective treatment option for severe and complex obesity; however, those who undergo such surgery need access to nutritional monitoring and vitamin and mineral supplementation to avoid the development of nutritional deficiencies. Recent findings: The British Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery have recently updated their recommendations on preoperative and postoperative nutritional monitoring and supplementation. There is a growing interest in the more malabsorptive procedures that are associated with an increased risk of nutritional deficiencies. Nutritional monitoring and prevention of nutritional deficiencies are discussed.Long-term follow-up that includes annual nutritional monitoring and access to a dietetic annual review is recommended; however, in the United Kingdom, many bariatric surgery centres are only commissioned to provide 2 years of follow-up, after which care is transferred to the general practitioner. Consideration should be given to developing shared care models for aftercare and also for the aftercare of malabsorptive procedures to remain with specialist centres. Summary: Bariatric surgery is a safe and effective treatment option for severe and complex obesity. It is essential that patients have access to lifelong nutritional monitoring adjustment of vitamin and mineral supplements to prevent nutritional issues.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Nutritional deficiencies are common among morbidly obese patients. Data are scarce for patients who have undergone laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG).OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study is to clarify the prevalence of deficiencies and to identify risk factors for postoperative deficiencies.SETTINGS: Hebrew University, Israel.METHODS: Preoperative and 1-year postoperative data were collected. We included anthropometric parameters, obesity-related co-morbidities, and laboratory findings.RESULTS: There were 192 candidates. Seventy-seven of them completed follow-ups at 12 months. Before surgery, 15% had anemia. Deficiencies of iron, folate, and B12 were 47%, 32%, and 13%, respectively. Women were more deficient in iron (56% women, 26% men, P<.001). Before surgery, low levels of vitamin D and elevated parathyroid hormone (PTH) were 99% and 41%, respectively. One year postsurgery, the deficiencies of hemoglobin and vitamin B12 worsened (20% and 17%, P<.001, P = .048, respectively). One year postsurgery, deficiencies of iron, folate, vitamin D, and PTH improved (28%, 21%, 94%, and 10%, respectively). Deficiencies of hemoglobin, folate, and B12 before surgery were predictors for deficiencies 1 year after surgery (P = .006 OR = .090; P = .012 OR = .069; P = .062 OR = .165, respectively).CONCLUSIONS: LSG had a modest effect on nutritional deficiencies in our patients at 1-year postsurgery. Focusing on the preoperative nutritional status and tailoring a specific supplemental program for each individual should prevent postoperative deficiencies.

Abstract:Introduction: Sleeve gastrectomy (SG) is associated with short-term nutritional deficiencies postoperatively. This study evaluates the long-term percentage of excess weight loss (% EWL), and nutritional deficiencies in a single-centre cohort undergoing SG as a primary procedure, with a 6-year follow-up. Material and methods: From January 2005 to December 2010 the records of 209 patients who underwent laparoscopic SG were retrieved from a computer database for analysis. Sixty out of the 209 paients completed follow-ups for 6 years. Results: Median % EWL at 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 years postoperatively was 80.9%, 79.1%, 73.8%, 71.8%, 71.5%, and 64.9%, respectively. Prior to surgery, 17.2% had anaemia. Deficiencies of iron, ferritin, folic acid, vitamin B12, magnesium, and phosphorus were 22%, 5.3%, 1.4%, 3.8%, 29.7%, and 5.3%, respectively. Six years post-surgery, deficiencies of haemoglobin, ferritin, and B12 worsened (36.7%, 43.3%, and 11.7%, p = 0.001, p < 0.001, p = 0.019, respectively), whereas there was no significant difference in deficiencies of iron, folic acid, magnesium, and phosphorus (25%, 1.7%, 20%, and 3%, p = 0.625, p = 0.896, p = 0.139, p = 0.539, respectively). There was elevated PTH before and 6 years after surgery (2.9% and 1.7%, p = 0.606). Conclusions: This retrospective study shows that laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy had a considerable effect on specific nutritional deficiencies in our patients at 6 years post-surgery. Knowledge of micronutrient deficiencies in these patients is beneficial for both prevention and management of nutritional complications associated with SG with the administration of oral nutritional supplementation according to the patient's needs.

Abstract:BackgroundNutritional deficiencies occur after weight loss surgery. Despite knowledge of nutritional risk, there is little uniformity of postoperative vitamin and mineral supplementation. The objective of this study was to evaluate a composite supplement based on the clinical practice guidelines proposed in 2008 regarding vitamin and mineral supplementation after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. The composite included iron (Fe) and calcium as well.MethodsA retrospective chart review of 309 patients undergoing laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (LRYGB) was evaluated for the development of deficiencies in iron and vitamins A, B1, B12, and D. Patients were instructed to take a custom vitamin and mineral supplement that was based on society-approved guidelines. The clinical practice guidelines were modified to include 1600 international units (IU) of vitamin D3 instead of the recommended 800 IU.ResultsThe compliant patients’ deficiency rates were significantly lower than those of the noncompliant patients for iron (p = 0.001), vitamin A (p = 0.01), vitamin B12 (p ≈ 0.02), and vitamin D (p < 0.0001). Women’s menstrual status did not significantly influence the development of iron deficiency.ConclusionsUse of a composite based on guidelines proposed by the AACE, TOS, and the ASMBS appears to be effective for preventing iron and vitamins A, B1, B12, and D deficiencies in the LRYGB patients during the first postoperative year. Separation of calcium and Fe does not need to be mandatory. Even with simplification, compliance is far from universal.

Abstract:Obesity is a worldwide epidemic, and bariatric surgery is considered the primary treatment for long-term weight loss and managing obesity-related health issues. Sleeve gastrectomy (SG) and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) are the most performed procedures. Nutritional deficiencies are a significant concern following bariatric surgery and can have serious consequences. This study aims to compare the incidence of nutritional deficiencies in patients undergoing RYGB and SG. A retrospective analysis was conducted on the nutritional status of 505 consecutive patients who underwent either RYGB or SG between January and December 2019. Data were collected regarding vitamin B12, folic acid, vitamin D, calcium, PTH, magnesium, hemoglobin, iron, ferritin, and transferrin at preoperative, 6-month, and 12-month intervals post-surgery. The RYGB group showed significantly higher excess weight loss. Vitamin B12, hemoglobin, and ferritin levels were consistently higher in the SG group throughout the study. Vitamin D deficiency was prevalent, with no significant difference between the groups. Vitamin B12 deficiency was significantly more common in the RYGB group (6 months: 17.46% vs. 4.69%, p < 0.001; 12 months: 16.74% vs. 0.93%, p < 0.001). Despite differences in their mechanisms, bariatric surgeries were associated with nutritional deficiencies. It is crucial to efficiently assess, prevent, and manage these deficiencies tailored to each surgical procedure.

Abstract:Background and objectives: Bariatric surgery becomes the final option for managing severe obesity. This study aims to identify the complications, changes in anthropometry, adherence to dietary recommendations, and psychological well-being of post-bariatric surgery patients. Methods and study design: An observational study was conducted on 63 post-bariatric surgery patients who had undergone bariatric surgery between two weeks and five years after surgery. The participants were assessed for the complications experienced, current comorbidities, anthropometric changes, dietary intake, and psychological well-being. A three-day, 24-hour diet recall was done to assess the dietary intake of the patients. The mean macronutrient and micronutrient intakes were compared to several available recommendations. The DASS-21 questionnaire was administered to determine the psychological well-being of the participants. Results: The most common complications experienced by patients after bariatric surgery were hair loss (50.8%), gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) (49.2%), and vomiting (41.3%). There were significant differences in mean weight before (129.5 (33.0) kg/m2) and after (85.0 (32.0) kg/m2) bariatric surgery (p<0.001). The prevalence of clinically severe obesity declined by 55%. Overall, patients had insufficient intake of some nutrients such as protein, fat, calcium, and iron. Majority of the patients experienced a normal level of stress, anxiety, and depression, but some had mild (3.2%), moderate (4.8%), and severe anxiety (1.6%). Conclusions: There were drastic improvements in patients' weight following bariatric surgery. However, there were several complications including nutrient deficiencies. Due to the anatomical changes in the gastrointestinal tract, patients must comply with the dietary and lifestyle changes and follow up with the healthcare professional. A nutrition module will be helpful for patients to prepare for and adapt to the changes after bariatric surgery.
