Abstract:In cylinder/wall interaction systems, the evolution of secondary vortex structures causes the early transition of the boundary layer. Investigations of secondary vortex statistics can enhance our understanding of the complex interactions between blunt body wakes and wall-bounded shear layers. In this paper, the statistical properties of three-dimensional vortex structures in the near-wake region during cylinder/wall interactions are numerically simulated by large-eddy simulations (LES) at the gap ratio G/D=1.0. We use a clustering method to identify complex vortex structures associated with intense events. According to the volume distribution of the minimum and maximum wall distances of these vortex structures, ymin and ymax, the spatial population of vortex clusters can be divided into two groups: wake vortex region and secondary vortex region. Secondary vortex structures are found in the second region. Self-similar secondary vortex structures have power law relationships. The deflection patterns of secondary and wake vortex structures are visualized by the joint PDFs of the vortex centre positions. The upwards deflection of the secondary vortex is greater than that of the lower wake vortex. The lead-lag phenomenon of secondary and lower wake vortices is observed through the temporal dynamics of the domain integral enstrophy. The conditional average results demonstrate that high-speed structures u′˜>0$$\widetilde {{u^\prime}} > 0$$ appear above the secondary vortex due to the influence of the lower wake vortex.
