Abstract:Apple tree productivity is influenced by the quantity of water and nutrients that are supplied during planting. To enhance resource utilization efficiency and optimize yields, a suitable strategy for supplying water and nitrogen must be established. A field experiment was conducted using a randomized block group design on five-year-old apple trees in Ningxia, with two irrigation lower limit levels (55%FC (W1) and 75%FC (W2)) and four N application levels (0 (N1), 120 (N2), 240 (N3), and 360 (N4) kg·ha−1). Our findings showed that leaf N content increased with a higher irrigation lower limit, but the difference was not statistically significant. However, the leaf N content significantly increased with increasing N application. The growth pattern of new shoots followed logistic curve characteristics, with the maximum new shoot growth rate and time of new shoot growth being delayed under high water and high nitrogen treatments. Apple yield and yield components (weight per fruit and number of fruits per plant) were enhanced under N application compared to no N application. The maximum apple yields were 19,405.3 kg·ha−1 (2022) and 29,607 kg·ha−1 (2023) at the N3 level. A parabolic relationship was observed between apple yield and N application level, with the optimal range of N application being 230–260 kg⸱ha−1. Apple quality indicators were not significantly affected by the irrigation lower limit but were significantly influenced by N application levels. The lower limit of irrigation did not have a significant impact on the quality indicators of the apples. Water and N utilization efficiencies improved with the W2 treatment at the same N application level. A negative relationship was observed between the amount of nitrogen applied and the biased productivity of nitrogen fertilizer. The utilization of nitrogen fertilizer was 127.6 kg·kg−1 (2022) and 200.3 kg·kg−1 (2023) in the W2N2 treatment. The apple yield was sustained, the quality of the fruit improved, and a substantial increase in water productivity was achieved with the W2N3 treatment. The findings of this study can be used as a reference for accurate field irrigation.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to know the controlling effects of water and nitrogen coupling on the yield, quality, and water-nitrogen utilization effectiveness of mountain apples under surge-root irrigation in the Loess Plateau. In order to optimize the water and nitrogen irrigation systems of superior quality and high yield, 7 years was selected for the mountain apple test material. The trial was designed with four tiers of irrigation, i.e., full irrigation (FI: 85–100% θ f , where θ f is the field capacity), light deficit irrigation (DI L : 70–85% θ f ), moderate deficit irrigation (DI M : 55–70% θ f ), and severe deficit irrigation (DI S : 40–55% θ f ) and three tiers of nitrogen, i.e., high nitrogen (N H : 600 kg ha –1 ), medium nitrogen (N M : 400 kg ha –1 ), and low nitrogen (N L : 200 kg ha –1 ). The subjective weight attained by the analytic hierarchy methods and the objective weight achieved by the enhanced coefficient of variation method were examined to find the comprehensive weight based on the notion of game hypothesis. Then, the weighted technique for order of preference by similarity to the ideal solution (TOPSIS) process was utilized to comprehensively assess the yield, quality, and water-nitrogen use efficiency of the apples, and a binary quadratic regression model was created between the comprehensive evaluation index and water-nitrogen inputs. The results showed that the effects of irrigation and nitrogen levels on the fruit yield, irrigation water use efficiency (IWUE), total water use efficiency (TWUE), nitrogen partial factor productivity (NPFP), and quality of mountain apples were significant ( P < 0.05). The apple yield and TWUE first improved and then diminished with an escalating quantity of water-nitrogen inputs, the IWUE diminished with a boost in the irrigation quantity, the NPFP dwindled when the nitrogen amount was increased. The best water and nitrogen inputs for apple yield, quality, or water-nitrogen use efficiency were dissimilar. The best comprehensive evaluation index was DI L N M treatment, and the worst comprehensive evaluation index was DI S N L treatment, based on the TOPSIS system. The interval of irrigation and nitrogen attained from the mathematic model ranged in 95–115 mm and 470–575 kg ha –1 , respectively. The outcome of this study may perhaps offer a theoretical basis for the scientific research of surge-root irrigation and the managing of mountain apple tree irrigation and fertilization in the Loess Plateau, China.

Effect of Water-Fertilizer Coupling on the Growth and Physiological Characteristics of Young Apple Trees

Abstract:China has the largest apple-growing area and fresh fruit production in the world; however, water shortages and low fertilizer utilization rates have restricted agricultural development. It is a major challenge to obtain scientific and reasonable irrigation and fertilization systems for young apple trees in semi-arid regions of northern China. A 2-year field bucket experiment with four irrigation levels of W1 (75–90% Fs, where Fs is the field water holding capacity), W2 (65–80% Fs), W3 (55–70% Fs), and W4 (45–60% Fs), and three fertilizer levels of F1 (27-9-9 g N-P2O5-K2O), F2 (18-9-9 g N-P2O5-K2O), and F3 (9-9-9 g N-P2O5-K2O) was conducted in 2019 and 2020, so as to explore the effects of different water and fertilizer treatments on the growth and physiological characteristics of young apple trees. The results showed that the plant growth, leaf area, and dry matter of young apple trees at each growing period reached maximum values under F1W2, and they showed a positive linear relationship with relative chlorophyll content (SPAD), net photosynthetic rate (Pn), transpiration rate (Tr), stomatal conductance (Gs), water consumption, and water use efficiency (WUE). With the growth of young apple trees, water-fertilizer coupling could significantly increase the leaf SPAD of young apple trees. Pn, Tr, and Gs reached the maximum value under F1W1, and although they decreased under F1W2, the water use efficiency increased by 2.3–25.7% and 4.0–23.8% under F1W2 compared with other treatments in two years, respectively. The water consumption of young apple trees increased with the increase of irrigation and fertilizer, and both dry matter and water productivity reached the maximum value under F1W2, which increased by 0.8%, 14.6% in 2019, and 0.6%, 11.1% in 2020 compared with F1W1, while water consumption decreased by 12.2% and 9.4% in both years. In conclusion, F1W2 treatment (soil moisture was controlled at 65–80% of field water holding capacity, and N-P2O5-K2O was controlled at 27-9-9 g) was the best coupling mode of water and fertilizer for young apple trees in semi-arid areas of northern China.

Abstract:[Objective] The objective of the experiment is to study the effects of water-nitrogen management on root traits, nitrogen accumulation and utilization and grain yield in rice with different N use efficiencies, and the relationship between root traits and nitrogen accumulation and utilization and yield.[Method]In this study, two different nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) rice varieties Dexiang 4103 (high NUE) and Yixiang 3724 (low NUE) were used as the trial material to determine the effects of water-nitrogen management on root traits and grain yield in rice with different NUEs, conventional irrigation and controlled alternative irrigation coupled with SPAD-diagnosis N management, optimal N management and farmer's usual N management were established as treatment factors. During this progress, the relationship between root traits, nitrogen accumulation and utilization and grain yield were analyzed by ridge regression analysis.[Result]There were significant genotypic differences in root traits at heading stage, grain yield, spikelet number per panicle, 1000-grain weight and total spikelet number. The high NUE variety (Dexiang 4103) had more spikelet number per panicle and larger population capacity, with the yield being 0.24%-11.31% higher than that of low NUE variety (Yixiang 3724). Compared with conventional irrigation, the 1000-grain weight under controlled alternative irrigation was significantly larger, while the former was more favorable for improving panicle number, spikelet number per panicle and population spikele number. SPAD-diagnosis-based N management and optimal N management could increase the panicle number and spikelet number per panicle, which increased the population spikelet number, ensuring the grain yield advantage over farmer's usual N management. Because of the water-nitrogen interaction effect, the gap in 1000-grain weight between N application and zero N treatments under controlled alternative irrigation narrowed considerably compared with that of conventional irrigation, leading to better effect of N application on grain yield under controlled alternative irrigation. The nitrogen use efficiency of Dexiang 4103 was 8.69% higher than that of Yixiang 3724, the nitrogen accumulation of rice under conventional irrigation was higher, as well as the nitrogen recovery efficiency, agronomic efficiency, physiological efficiency under controlled alternative irrigation. SPAD-diagnosis-based N management and optimal N management were more favorable for imroving nitrogen accumulation and utilization efficiency of rice than farmer's usual N management.The determination coefficient of ridge regression equation between root traits and grain yield of rice at jointing stage, heading stage and maturity stage ranged from 0.4198 to 0.9028. The relationship between root traits at heading stage and grain yield was the most closely related, and the determination coefficients of high NUE and low NUE varieties all exceeded 0.9. At the jointing stage, the rice fine lateral root length had the greatest effect on grain yield. At the heading stage, there was difference between the high NUE and low NUE varieties, and the coarse lateral root length of the former and the fine lateral root surface area of the latter had the greatest effect on grain yield, respectively. In maturity stage, the relationship between adventitious root length and grain yield was the most important. Rice root morphology at heading stage had close relation with the change of nitrogen accumulation, and the determination coefficient of ridge regression equation was close to 0.7. In terms of water and nitrogen management practice, SPAD-diagnosis N management coupled with conventional irrigation or optimal N management combined with alternative irrigation should be applied to achieve grain yield improvement for both high NUE and low NUE varieties.[Conclusion]The root morphology characters of rice at heading stage was closely related to yield and nitrogen accumulation, and the yield and nitrogen accumulation and utilization efficiency of rice could be improved by reasonable water-nitrogen management.

Abstract:In order to reveal the responses of yield, growth, root activity, antioxidant status, and nitrogen metabolism of apple tree to water and nitrogen amounts, a 2-year field experiment was conducted in 2018/2019 and 2019/2020, which comprised four nitrogen doses, i.e., 0 (N 1 ), 120 (N 2 ), 240 (N 3 ), and 360 (N 4 ) kg N ha −1 and two levels of upper irrigation limit, i.e., 85% (W 1 ) and 100% (W 2 ) of field capacity. Physiological parameters of roots were measured at fruit-inflating and post-harvesting phases. New shoot length, yield attributes, N content of roots, and leaves were determined at harvest stage. The results showed that single fruit weight, number of fruits, and yield increased with N application amount, and the maximum value reached at N 3 in both years. W 2 increased yield by 11.55% compared with W 1 due to the increase of single fruit weight in 2019. Antioxidant enzymes and malondialdehyde (MDA) content were enhanced under N starvation (N 1 ) and excess (N 4 ), and were not affected by irrigation level regardless of growth phases. Root activity, nitrate reductase activity, glutamine synthetase activity, and glutamate synthetase activity were affected by N dose and they have different thresholds for reaching the maximum. The content of free amino acids in roots increased with the N dose, and reached peak level at N 3 . W 1 has neither caused water stress on roots nor affected nitrogen absorption of plants compared with W 2 . Taken together, W 1 N 3 could save agricultural water, ensure the yield, improve root N absorption, and avoid oxidative stress for apple planting in semi-humid and drought-prone regions.

Abstract:A two-year pot-culture experiment of rice cultivar,II You 838,with alluvial soil from Hubei was conducted to investigate the effects of two water management patterns and four nitrogen(N) fertilizer levels(N 0,126.0,157.5,210.0 kg/ha)on the aerial part biomass,N accumulation,N use efficiency.The results show that the aerial part biomass,N accumulation and N use efficiency of rice are obviously affected by the water management patterns,and the rice grain yield,N accumulation,N agronomic efficiency,N recovery efficiency,partial factor productivity and nitrogen physiological efficiency under the water-logging irrigation pattern are higher than those of the water-controlled irrigation pattern.The biomass and N accumulation of rice aerial parts are increased with the increase of nitrogen level,while the nitrogen agronomic efficiency,partial factor productivity of the applied N and N physiological efficiency are reduced.However,there are no significant differences between the 25% N saving from conventional nitrogen application rate(N 157.5 kg/ha) and the conventional nitrogen application rate(N 210.0 kg/ha).In general,the water-logging irrigation pattern combined with the 25% N saving from conventional nitrogen application rate is recommended as a better water and nitrogen application patterns due to its higher grain yield and nitrogen utilization.

Abstract:Inappropriate water and nitrogen management has restricted apple production in the Loess Plateau of China. A 2-yr field experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of irrigation and nitrogen levels on apple yield, fruit quality, water and nitrogen use efficiency and soil nitrate-N residues under drip fertigation. Irrigation had two levels of upper irrigation limit, 85% (W 1 ) and 100% (W 2 ) of field capacity, and nitrogen rates included 0 (N 1 ), 120 (N 2 ), 240 (N 3 ) and 360 (N 4 ) kg ha −1 . The results showed W 1 significantly increased WUE in two years. Irrigation levels has not influenced yield attributes and fruit quality in 2020. In 2021, W 1 increased fruit vitamin C, total soluble sugar and sugar-acid ratio by 10.02%∼46.54% with a slight yield reduction, and reduced nitrate-N leaching. Nitrogen rates over N 3 reduced yield, WUE and fruit quality. Multi-objective evaluation revealed that W 1 N 3 was the optimum irrigation and nitrogen rates for drip-fertigated apple production.

Abstract:In order to explore the accurate management mode of water and fertilizer supplies for young apple tree in semi-arid area field,the bucket cultivation experiment,including four levels of irrigation as75% ~ 85%( W1),65% ~ 75%( W2),55% ~ 65%( W3) and 45% ~ 55%( W4) of field capacity,and three levels of fertilization( N-P2O5-K2O) as 30-30-10 g / plant( F1),20-20-10 g /plant( F2) and10-10-10 g / plant( F3),was conducted to study the effects of water and fertilizer coupling on yield,fruit quality and water and fertilizer use efficiency of three-year old young apple tree. The results showed that controlled water and fertilizer can effectively regulate the plant and leaf area growth during bud flowering to new growth period; the highest and lowest yields were obtained by F1W1 and F3W4treatments,respectively( compared with F3W4,yield of F1W1 was increased by 139. 1%),and the determinationcoefficient between yield and dry mass was 0. 908 5. Increasing irrigation depth could improve apple color index but it would reduce the shape index,deficit irrigation and increased fertilizer application rates both could improve apple firmness. Increased fertilizer application rates could improve the vitamin C content of apple under mild deficit irrigation treatment( F2); irrigation depth had no significant effect on soluble solids content and soluble sugar content,but increased fertilizer application rates could improve both of them; increased irrigation depth could reduce titratable acid and improve the sugar acid ratio,but fertilization rate had no significant effect on them. High irrigation depth and low fertilization rate could get high partial factor productivity( PFP),but the maximum water use efficiency( WUE) could not be got by F1W1 treatment. The maximum WUE was appeared in F2W2 treatment with yield decreased by 7. 5%,water consumption decreased by 16. 7% and WUE increased by 11. 2% compared with F1W1 treatment.Thus,F2W2 treatment was the best water and fertilizer application combination for the young apple tree and it reached the best water and fertilizer coupling mode.

Nitrogen Application Timing and Levels Affect the Fate and Budget of Fertilizer Nitrogen in the Apple–Soil System

Abstract:This study aimed to determine the effects of the nitrogen (N) application period and level on the fate of fertilizer N and the contribution of N absorption and translocation to apple organ N. Two N application periods (labeled by the 15N tracer technique in spring and summer, represented by SP and SU, respectively) and three N levels (N0, MN, and HN) were used to determine the physiological indexes and aboveground, root, and soil 15N content of 4-year-old dwarf ('Red Fuji'/M9T337) and arborized ('Red Fuji'/Malus hupehensis Rehd.) apple trees. The results showed that HN led to shoot overgrowth, which was not conducive to the growth of the apple root system (root length, root tips, root surface area, and root volume) or the improvement of root activity. The contribution of soil N to apple organ N accounted for more than 50%, and the contribution of N application in summer to fruit N was higher than that in spring. Under HN treatment, the proportion of soil N absorbed by trees decreased, while that of fertilizer N increased; however, the highest proportion was still less than 50%, so apple trees were highly dependent on soil N. Under MN treatment, fertilizer N residue was similar to soil N consumption, and soil N fertility maintained a basic balance. Under HN treatment, fertilizer N residue was significantly higher than soil N consumption, indicating that excessive N application increased fertilizer N residue in the soil. Overall, the 15N utilization rate of arborized trees (17.33–22.38%) was higher than that of dwarf trees (12.89–16.91%). A total of 12.89–22.38% of fertilizer 15N was absorbed by trees, 30.37–35.41% of fertilizer 15N remained in the soil, and 44.65–54.46% of fertilizer 15N was lost. The 15N utilization rate and 15N residual rate of summer N application were higher than those of spring N application, and the 15N loss rate was lower than that of spring N application. High microbial biomass N (MBN) may be one of the reasons for the high N utilization rate and the low loss rate of N application in summer.

Abstract:Water storage pit irrigation (WSPI) has been proven effective in improving the water use efficiency of fruit trees in Loess Plateau, but so far there are still no matching efficient fertilization management methods. A two-year experiment was conducted to explore the management strategy of fertilization under the consideration of apple production and environmental sustainability. N isotope tracer technique was used to study the distribution of labelled nitrogen in soil, leaf, root and fruit. Moreover, the yield in different fertilizer managements were observed to evaluate the apple production. The results showed that increasing the amount of fertilizer could increase the accumulation of fertilizer nitrogen in soil, but also increased the risk of nitrogen leaching. Under the same amount of fertilizer, split fertilization can effectively increase of fertilizer nitrogen in soil by a mean of 4.7 times. Further, N300 application with split fertilization effectively increased apple yield. The yield of N300II treatment was higher than other treatment by maximum 68.5%. In addition, the root system mainly absorbed the fertilizer nitrogen applied in the current year, and the fruit mainly absorbed the fertilizer nitrogen applied in the previous year, but there was no significant difference in the leaves.

Abstract:Within the Chinese Loess Plateau, water resources are scarce and irrigation efficiency is a challenging issue. Traditional surface drip irrigation (SDI) methods have failed to improve irrigation efficiency and reduce surface evaporation in the region. An easy‐to‐install and practicable root‐zone injection irrigation (RII) method, with a low risk of emitter clogging and which uses subsurface infiltration‐promoting apparatuses (SIPA) to deliver water directly to the root zone, was designed and tested in an apple orchard over 3 years in northern Shaanxi, China. In the 0–0.6 m soil layer (where the apple roots are concentrated), the RII method produced consistently higher soil water content than the SDI method over all three growing seasons. The soil water content was consistently higher than 60% of field capacity, thus meeting the water requirements of fruit‐bearing apple trees. In addition, the RII method alleviated soil desiccation, significantly increased apple yields and improved fruit quality compared with the SDI method using the same volume of irrigation water. Both irrigation efficiency and water‐use efficiency were improved with the RII method. These results provide a theoretical basis for the utilization of the RII irrigation method in apple orchards in semi‐arid regions, which may improve water conservation and the sustainability of apple production. © 2019 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:We developed apple plants that are better adapted to growth in high-density orchards in dry areas with low-nutrient soil. One-year-old 'Fuji' apple cultivar 'Tianhong 2' on ' Malus. robusta' rootstock was cultivated with 'SH40', 'Jizhen 1', or 'Jizhen2' dwarfing rootstock as an interstock bridge to investigate the effects on vegetative growth and nitrogen utilization efficiency under different water and nitrate conditions. The results showed reductions in several growth indices, including plant height, trunk diameter, total dry weight, relative growth rate, chlorophyll content, and net photosynthesis rate, for all interstocks under low-nitrate and drought conditions. The smallest reductions occurred with 'SH40' and the highest with 'Jizhen2'. When subjected to drought, 'SH40' showed the minimum and 'Jizhen2' the maximum reduction in 15 N accumulation and utilization. Additionally, 'SH40' had the highest nitrogen content and uptake flux, regardless of the nitrogen level. These findings suggest that the high tolerance of 'SH40' to drought and low-nitrogen stress recommend its use as an interstock.

Abstract:This study aimed to explore how the yield, water use efficiency (WUE), and physiological characteristics of greenhouse-cultivated tomatoes in Northeast China respond to different water and nitrogen treatments during the flowering to fruit set stage (Stage 1), fruiting stage (Stage 2), and ripening stage (Stage 3). Three irrigating upper and lower limits were set at 65% θfc and 75% θfc (W1), 75% θfc and 85% θfc (W2), and 85% θfc and 95% θfc (W3), where θfc represents the field capacity. Three levels of N application were used: N1 (180 kg ha−1), N2 (240 kg ha−1) and N3 (360 kg ha−1). Variance analysis and quadratic curve fitting were employed to characterize the effects of different water and nitrogen treatments on various physiological indicators. The results showed that in Stage 1, the irrigation water use efficiency (WUEi) under N3 was not affected by irrigation water. In Stage 2, there was no significant difference in the photosynthetic rate (Pn) between W3N2 and W2N2. However, the transpiration rate (Tr) in W3N2 was 13.23% higher than that in W2N2, resulting in higher instantaneous water use efficiency (WUEins) under the W2N2 treatment. The diurnal variation in the sap flow rate (SFR) under different water and nitrogen conditions was primarily characterized by a multimodal curve. A quadratic relationship was found between tomato Pn and SFR under different water and nitrogen treatments. In Stage 2, the increase in Pn was accompanied by a greater needed SFR, indicating a decreasing efficiency of photosynthesis in utilizing sap flow. Based on the strength of the correlations between WUEins, intrinsic water use efficiency (WUEin), and WUEi and yield, emphasis should be placed on WUEins during Stage 1 and on WUEi during Stages 2 and 3. The results contribute to improving irrigation and fertilization practices for tomatoes in regions with similar environmental conditions and scientifically promoting transpiration and WUE.

An Analysis Based on Japonica Rice Root Characteristics and Crop Growth Under the Interaction of Irrigation and Nitrogen Methods

Abstract:Water shortages and nitrogen (N) fertilizer overuse limit japonica rice production in Northeastern China. The interactions between water-saving irrigation and nitrogen management on rice root and shoot growth is still our research focus. Here, japonica rice (DN425) was subjected to the irrigation methods W1 (flooding irrigation), W2 [mild alternate wetting and drying irrigation (AWD); −10 kPa], W3 (severe AWD; −30 kPa), and different N fertilizer ratios were applied in different growth stages, namely, N1 (6:3:1:0), N2 (5:3:1:1), and N3 (4:3:2:1). From jointing to full heading stages, the highest photosynthate production capacity and root activity were obtained under W1N2. AWD markedly affected the root system and resulted in root senescence at later growth stages. Grain yield and N utilization efficiency were closely and positively correlated with the relative water content, crop growth rate (CGR), leaf area duration (LAD), the increase rate of root length density, root surface area density, and root volume density (RVD) from the jointing to full heading stages. This positive correlation was also observed in the increased rate of root bleeding sap (RBS) under W1N2 and CGR under W2N3. From full heading to maturity stages, N2 could promote root growth, LAD, and CGR under AWD to a greater extent than those under the other treatments. Water use efficiency (WUE) and N uptake efficiency (NUpE) were both negatively associated with the decreased rate of RVD, root dry weight (RDW), and RBS. They were closely and positively correlated with the increased rate of RDW and CGR. Our results suggested that W2N2 treatment delayed root senescence, maintained leaf photosynthesis, optimized the crop growth rate from full heading to maturity stages, and improved grain yield. The optimal grain yield, WUE, and NUpE were achieved at the irrigation water amount and topdressing fertilizer ratio of 41.40–50.34 × 10 2 and 31.20–34.83 kg ha –1 , respectively.

Abstract:In this study, we investigated the effect of partially substituting inorganic nitrogen with bio-organic fertiliser on the ‘Tianhong2’ Fuji apple planting in Xinjiang. Bio-organic fertiliser was applied, and nitrogen was reduced by 20% (T2), 40% (T3), and 60% (T4) during the blooming and fruit expansion periods with conventionally fertilised fields used as control (T1); soil nutrient, soil enzyme activity, leaf nutrients, fruit quality, and yield were measured. The total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), total potassium (TK), total calcium (TCa), available phosphorus (AP), available potassium (AK), and soil organic matter (SOM) contents, as well as the soil catalase (S-CAT), soil uretrase (S-UE), soil saccharase (S-SC), and soil nitrate reductase (S-NR) activities, significantly increased in the experimental soils compared with those in T1. In addition, TP, TCa, and total magnesium (TMg) content in apples significantly increased. Compared to T1, the T2 and T3 treatments significantly improved the fruit yield and quality, increasing the sugar–acid ratio, soluble protein, soluble sugar, peel carotenoid, and anthocyanin content and reducing peel chlorophyll content. The brightness (L*), red–green axis (a*), yellow–blue axis (b*), colour intensity (C), and tone (h°) values changed. The yield per hectare and nitrogen fertiliser partial productivity values were significantly increased. Overall, the T2 treatment resulted in the best outcome for the Yili area. In conclusion, partially substituting inorganic nitrogen with bio-organic fertiliser can effectively increase soil and leaf nutrient content and improve fruit yield and quality.

[Effects of nitrogen application levels on translocation and distribution of 13C-photosynthate and 15N to fruit from leaves of apple tree]

Abstract:A field experiment was carried out in a six-year old 'Fuji3'/M26/Malus hupehensis Rehd. apple with 15N and 13C labeled tracers, to understand 13C assimilation capability and the characteristics of translocation and distribution of 13C-photosynthate and 15N to fruit under different nitrogen application levels (urea 0%, 0.6%, 1.2%, 1.8%, 2.4%, CK, N1, N2, N3, N4, respectively) to smear the leaves within 20 cm around the fruit at late stage of fruit enlargement. The results showed that, with the increases of urea application, the chlorophyll content, nitrogen content, net photosynthetic rate, sorbitol and sucrose content, sorbitol 6-phosphate dehydrogenase (S6PDH) and sucrose phosphate synthase (SPS) activities, 13C assimilation capability of leaves were first increased and then decreased, with the highest value in 1.8% urea smear treatment and the lowest value with the treatment of clear water. The 13C of self retention (self leaves and self branches) was the highest in clear water (81.6%) and the lowest in 1.8% urea smear treatment (63.5%). The 13C was mainly allocated to fruit, followed by unlabeled perennial branch, and the lowest in unlabeled leaves. With the increases of urea application, the 13C absorption of fruit was first increased and then decreased, with the highest value in 1.8% urea smear treatment (1.21 mg·g-1) and the lowest value in clear water (0.51 mg·g-1). The 15N absorption of fruit was enhanced with the increases of urea application. These results indicated that foliage application of urea solution improved translocation and distribution of leaf photosynthate and nitrogen to fruit with varying degrees, which was the highest in 1.8% urea smear treatment and could avoid excessive intake of nitrogen to fruit.

Abstract:Up to one third of patients with cancer will develop an affective disorder (generalised anxiety disorder, major depressive illness or an adjustment disorder) [1–5] regardless of disease stage [6, 7]. Key psychological factors include the following: difficulties patients have in coming to terms with the inherent uncertainty of their prognosis; a lack of practical or psychological support from relatives, friends and health professionals; the stigma associated with a cancer diagnosis and failure to find an adequate explanation for the development of the illness [8]. Treatment related factors include the development of body image problems, sexual difficulties and adverse effects of chemotherapy. Female gender and a past history of affective disorder are key vulnerability factors.
Optimization of thermostable α- amylase production by Streptomyces erumpens MTCC 7317 in solid-state fermentation using cassava fibrous residue

Abstract:Production of α- amylase under solid state fermentation by Streptomyces erumpens MTCC 7317 was investigated using cassava fibrous residue, one of the major solid waste released during extraction of starch from cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz). Response surface methodology (RSM) was used to evaluate the effect of the main variables, i.e., incubation period (60 h), moisture holding capacity (60%) and temperature (500C) on enzyme production by applying a full factorial Central Composite Design. Varying the inoculum concentration (5-25%) of S. erumpens showed that 15% inoculum (v/w, 2.5 x 106 CFU/ml) was the optimum for α- amylase production. Among the different nitrogen sources supplemented, beef extract was most suitable for enzyme production. The application of S. erumpens enzyme in liquefaction of soluble starch and cassava starch was studied. The maximum hydrolysis of soluble starch (85%) and cassava starch (70%) was obtained with the application of 5 ml crude enzyme (17185 units) after 5 h of incubation.
[Effects of water and nitrogen management on photosynthetic matter production and yield of wheat]

Abstract:The shortage of water resources and the irrational application of nitrogen fertilizer restrict the synergistic enhancement of yield and water- and fertilizer-use efficiencies of wheat in the Huang-Huai-Hai region. In this study, we conducted an experiment following two-factor split zone design with three irrigation levels and four nitrogen application rates. The relative water content of the 0-40 cm soil layer was supplemented to 65% (W1), 75% (W2), and 85% (W3) of field water capacity at the jointing and anthesis stages of wheat. The rates of nitrogen application were 0 (N0), 150 (N1), 180 (N2), and 210 (N3) kg·hm-2. We analyzed the effects of these different managements on post-anthesis photosynthetic matter production, yield, and water- and nitrogen-use efficiencies. The results showed that yield first increased with increases in the levels of irrigation and nitrogen application, peaking under the W2N2 treatment (9103.53 kg·hm-2). However, further increases in water and nitrogen input did not have further enhancement of wheat yield. Under the same nitrogen application condition, compared with W1 treatment, the canopy light interception rate, chlorophyll relative content and actual photochemical efficiency after anthesis increased by 4.5%-6.0%, 19.7%-28.2%, and 7.5%-9.8% in response to the W2 treatment, respectively, without any difference between the W2 and W3 irrigation levels. At the same irrigation level, post-anthesis dry matter accumulation in repose to the N2 treatment increased by 80.1%-88.9% and 16.7%-22.2% compared with N0 and N1 treatments, respectively, without significant difference between the N2 and N3 treatments. Both the irrigation water-use efficiency (IWUE) and the nitrogen partial factor productivity declined with increases in the levels of irrigation and nitrogen application. Under the W1, W2, and W3 treatments, the values obtained for IWUE were 16.23, 11.01, and 7.91 kg·hm-2·m-3, respectively, whereas in response to the N1, N2, and N3 treatments, N partial factor productivity was 50.8%, 48.4%, and 42.5%, respectively. In all, based on soil moisture measurements and assessments of wheat yield and water- and nitrogen-use efficiencies, the optimal water and nitrogen management strategy for enhancing wheat yield in the Huang-Huai-Hai region is supplementation of water content of 0-40 cm soil layer at the jointing and anthesis stages to 75% field capacity combined with the application of 180 kg·hm-2 nitrogen (W2N2). This approach could achieve high yield and efficiency and promote conservation of water and fertilizer.
