Abstract:We study the spin-boson model (SBM) with two spins in an antiferromagnetic bias field by a numerically exact method based on variational matrix product states. Several observables such as the magnetization, the entanglement entropy between the two spins and the bosonic environment, the ground-state energy, as well as the correlation function for two spins are calculated exactly. The characteristics of these observables suggest that the antiferromagnetic bias field can drive the 2nd-order quantum phase transition (QPT) to the 1st-order QPT in the sub-Ohmic SBM and the Kosterlitz-Thouless QPT directly to the 1st-order one in the Ohmic SBM. A quantum tricritical point, where the continuous QPT meets the 1st-order one, can be then detected. It is found that the antiferromagnetic bias field would not change the universality of this model below the quantum tricritical point.

Rich Quantum Phases in the Anisotropic Sub-Ohmic Spin-Boson Model

Abstract:We study the anisotropic spin-boson model (SBM) by a numerically exact method based on variational matrix product states. Rich phase diagram is found in the anisotropy-coupling strength plane by calculating several observables. There are three distinct quantum phases: delocalized phase with even parity (phase I), delocalized phase with odd parity (phase II), and localized phase with broken $Z_2$ symmetry (phase III), which intersect at a quantum tricritical point. The competition between those phases will give overall picture of the phase diagram. For small bath exponent in the regime of $s 1/2$: For highly anisotropic case, the system will undergo the QPTs from phase I to II via 1st-order, and then to the phase III via 2nd-order with the coupling strength. For low anisotropic case, the system only experiences the continuous QPT from phase I to phase III with the non-mean-field critical exponents. Very interestingly, at the moderate anisotropy, the system would display the continuous QPTs for several times but with the same critical exponents. This unusual reentrance to the same localized phase is first discovered in the light-matter interacting systems. Thus, the anisotropic SBM would open an new avenue to study the rich quantum criticality.

Abstract:We study the spin-boson model without the counterrotating terms by a numerically exact method based on variational matrix product states. Surprisingly, the second-order quantum phase transition (QPT) is observed for the sub-Ohmic bath in the rotating-wave approximations. Moreover, first-order QPTs can also appear before the critical points. With the decrease of the bath exponents, these first-order QPTs disappear successively, while the second-order QPT remains robust. The second-order QPT is further confirmed by multi-coherent-states variational studies, while the first-order QPT is corroborated with the exact diagonalization in the truncated Hilbert space. Extension to the Ohmic bath is also performed, and many first-order QPTs appear successively in a wide coupling regime, in contrast to previous findings. The previous pictures for many physical phenomena for the spin-boson model in the rotating-wave approximation have to be modified at least at the strong coupling.

Abstract:A physical requirement on the Hamiltonian operator in quantum mechanics is that it must generate real energy spectrum and unitary time evolution. While the Hamiltonians are Dirac Hermitian in conventional quantum mechanics, they observe PT-symmetry in PT-symmetric quantum theory. The embedding property was first studied by Günther and Samsonov [1] to visualise the evolution of unbroken PT-symmetric Hamiltonians on C2 by Hermitian Hamiltonians on C4. This paper investigates the properties of PT-symmetric quantum systems including the embedding property. We provide a full characterization of the embedding property in the general case and show that only unbroken PT-symmetric quantum systems admit this property in a finite dimensional space. Furthermore, utilizing this property, we establish a physically realizable simulation process of the unbroken PT-symmetric Hamiltonians. An observation that the unbroken PT-symmetric quantum systems can be viewed as open systems in the conventional quantum mechanics accounts for the consistency of PT-symmetric quantum theory.
Toward a classification of PT-symmetric quantum systems: From dissipative dynamics to topology and wormholes

Abstract:Studies of many-body non-Hermitian parity-time (PT)-symmetric quantum systems are attracting a lot of interest due to their relevance in research areas ranging from quantum optics and continuously monitored dynamics to Euclidean wormholes in quantum gravity and dissipative quantum chaos. While a symmetry classification of non-Hermitian systems leads to 38 universality classes, we show that, under certain conditions, PT-symmetric systems are grouped into 24 universality classes. We identify 14 of them in a coupled two-site Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model and confirm the classification by spectral analysis using exact diagonalization techniques. Intriguingly, in 4 of these 14 universality classes, AIIIν , BDIν† , BDI++ν , and CI−−ν , we identify a basis in which the SYK Hamiltonian has a block structure in which some blocks are rectangular, with ν∈N the difference between the number of rows and columns. We show analytically that this feature leads to the existence of ν robust purely real eigenvalues, whose level statistics follow the predictions of Hermitian random matrix theory for classes A, AI, BDI, and CI, respectively. We have recently found that this ν is a topological invariant, so these classes are topological. By contrast, nontopological real eigenvalues display a crossover between Hermitian and non-Hermitian level statistics. Similarly to the case of Lindbladian dynamics, the reduction of universality classes leads to unexpected results, such as the absence of Kramers degeneracy in a given sector of the theory. Abstract:We study parity-time-symmetric non-Hermitian quantum systems at finite temperature, where the Boltzmann distribution law fails to hold. To characterize their abnormal physical properties, a new quantum statistics theory (the so-called quantum Liouvillian statistics theory) was developed, in which the Boltzmann distribution law was replaced by the Liouvillian-Boltzmann distribution law. Using it, we derived analytical results of thermodynamic properties for thermal PT systems and found that a "continuous" thermodynamic phase transition occurs at the exceptional point, where a zero-temperature anomaly exists.

Quantum Restored Symmetry Protected Topological Phases

Abstract:Symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases are fundamental quantum many-body states of matter beyond Landau's paradigm. Here, we introduce the concept of quantum restored SPTs (QRSPTs), where the protecting symmetry is spontaneously broken at each instance in time, but restored after time average over quantum fluctuations, so that topological features re-emerge. To illustrate the concept, we study a one-dimensional fermionic Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model with fluctuating superconducting order. We solve this problem in several limiting cases using a variety of analytical methods and compare them to numerical (density matrix renormalization group) simulations which are valid throughout the parameter regime. We thereby map out the phase diagram and identify a QRSPT phase with topological features which are reminiscent from (but not identical to) the topology of the underlying free fermion system. The QRSPT paradigm thereby stimulates a new perspective for the constructive design of novel topological quantum many-body phases.

Universal non-Hermitian flow in one-dimensional PT-symmetric quantum criticalities

Abstract:The critical point of a topological phase transition is described by a conformal field theory (CFT), where the finite-size corrections to the ground state energy are uniquely related to its central charge. We study the finite-size scaling of the energy of non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model with parity and time-reversal symmetry ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry. We find that under open boundary condition (OBC), the energy scaling $E(L)\sim c/L$ reveals a negative central charge $c=-2$ at the non-Hermitian critical point, indicative of a non-unitary CFT. Furthermore, we discover a universal scaling function capturing the flow of a system from Dirac CFT with $c=1$ to a non-unitary CFT with $c=-2$. The scaling function demonstrates distinct behaviors at topologically non-trivial and trivial sides of critical points. Notably, within the realm of topological criticality, the scaling function exhibits an universal rise-dip-rise pattern, manifesting a characteristic singularity inherent in the non-Hermitian topological critical points. The analytic expression of the scaling function has been derived and is in good agreement with the numerical results.

Unconventional quantum criticality in a non-Hermitian extended Kitaev chain

Abstract:We investigate the nature of quantum criticality and topological phase transitions near the critical lines obtained for the extended Kitaev chain with next nearest neighbor hopping parameters and non-Hermitian chemical potential. We surprisingly find multiple gap-less points, the locations of which in the momentum space can change along the critical line unlike the Hermitian counterpart. The interesting simultaneous occurrences of vanishing and sign flipping behavior by real and imaginary components, respectively of the lowest excitation is observed near the topological phase transition. Introduction of non- Hermitian factor leads to an isolated critical point instead of a critical line and hence, reduced number of multi-critical points as compared to the Hermitian case. The critical exponents obtained for the multi-critical and critical points show a very distinct behavior from the Hermitian case.

Emergent Ashkin-Teller criticality in a constrained boson model

Abstract:We show, via explicit computation on a constrained bosonic model, that the presence of subsystem symmetries can lead to a quantum phase transition (QPT) where the critical point exhibits an emergent enhanced symmetry. Such a transition separates a unique gapped ground state from a gapless one; the latter phase exhibits a broken $Z_2$ symmetry which we tie to the presence of the subsystem symmetries in the model. The intermediate critical point separating these phases exhibits an additional emergent $Z_2$ symmetry which we identify; this emergence leads to a critical theory in the Ashkin-Teller, instead of the expected Ising, universality class. We show that the transitions of the model reproduces the Askhin-Teller critical line with variable correlation length exponent $\nu$ but constant central charge $c$. We verify this scenario via explicit exact-diagonalization computations, provide an effective Landau-Ginzburg theory for such a transition, and discuss the connection of our model to the PXP model describing Rydberg atom arrays.

Walking behavior induced by $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry breaking in a non-Hermitian $\rm XY$ model with clock anisotropy

Abstract:A quantum system governed by a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian may exhibit zero temperature phase transitions that are driven by interactions, just as its Hermitian counterpart, raising the fundamental question how non-Hermiticity affects quantum criticality. In this context we consider a non-Hermitian system consisting of an $\rm XY$ model with a complex-valued four-state clock interaction that may or may not have parity-time-reversal ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry. When the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry is broken, and time-evolution becomes non-unitary, a scaling behavior similar to the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition ensues, but in a highly unconventional way, as the line of fixed points is absent. From the analysis of the $d$-dimensional RG equations, we obtain that the unconventional behavior in the $\mathcal{PT}$ broken regime follows from the collision of two fixed points in the $d\to 2$ limit, leading to walking behavior or pseudocriticality. For $d=2+1$ the near critical behavior is characterized by a correlation length exponent $\nu=3/8$, a value smaller than the mean-field one. These results are in sharp contrast with the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric case where only one fixed point arises for $2<d<4$ and in $d=1+1$ three lines of fixed points occur with a continuously varying critical exponent $\nu$.

Quantum Geometric Contributions to the BKT Transition: Beyond Mean Field Theory

Abstract:We study quantum geometric contributions to the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition temperature, T_BKT, in the presence of fluctuations beyond BCS theory. Because quantum geometric effects become progressively more important with stronger pairing attraction, a full understanding of 2D multi-orbital superconductivity requires the incorporation of preformed pairs. We find it is through the effective mass of these pairs that quantum geometry enters the theory and this suggests that the quantum geometric effects are present in the non-superconducting pseudogap phase as well. Increasing these geometric contributions tends to raise T_BKT which then competes with fluctuation effects that generally depress it. We argue that a way to physically quantify the magnitude of these geometric terms is in terms of the ratio of the pairing onset temperature T^* to T_BKT. Our paper calls attention to an experimental study demonstrating how both temperatures and, thus, their ratio may be currently accessible. They can be extracted from the same voltage-current measurements which are generally used to establish BKT physics. We use these observations to provide rough preliminary estimates of the magnitude of the geometric contributions in, for example, magic angle twisted bilayer graphene.

Abstract:Since the realization of quantum systems described by non-Hermitian Hamiltonians with parity-time (PT) symmetry, interest in non-Hermitian, quantum many-body models has steadily grown. Most studies to-date map to traditional quantum spin models with a non-Hermiticity that arises from making the model parameters complex or purely imaginary. Here, we present a new set of models with non-Hermiticity generated by splitting a Hermitian term into two Jordan-normal form parts, and the perturbations are confined to one or two sites. We present exact diagonalization results for the PT-threshold in such models, and provide an analytical approach for understanding the numerical results. Surprisingly, with non-Hermitian potentials confined to two or even a single site, we find a robust PT threshold that seems insensitive to the size of the quantum spin chain. Our results provide a pathway to experimentally feasible non-Hermitian quantum spin chains where the confluence of many-body effects and non-Hermiticity effects can be observed.

A renormalization group approach to non-Hermitian topological quantum criticality

Abstract:Critical transition points between symmetry-broken phases are characterized as fixed points in the renormalization group (RG) theory. We show that, following the standard Wilsonian procedure that traces out the large momentum modes, this well known fact can break down in non-Hermitian systems. Based on non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Hegger (SSH)-type models, we propose a real-space decimation scheme to study the criticality between the topological and trivial phase. We provide concrete examples and an analytic proof to show that the real-space scheme perfectly overcomes the insufficiency of the standard method, especially in the sense that it always preserves the system at criticality as fixed points under RG. The proposed method can also greatly simplify the search of critical points for complicated non-Hermitian models by ruling out the irrelevant operators. These results pave the way towards more advanced RG-based techniques for the interacting non-Hermitian quantum systems.

Abstract:I will provide a pedagogical introduction to non-Hermitian quantum systems that are PT-symmetric, that is they are left invariant under a simultaneous parity transformation (P) and time-reversal (T). I will explain how generalised versions of this antilinear symmetry can be utilised to explain that these type of systems possess real eigenvalue spectra in parts of their parameter spaces and how to set up a consistent quantum mechanical framework for them that enables a unitary time-evolution. In the second part I will explain how to extend this framework to explicitly time-dependent Hamiltonian systems and report in particular on recent progress made in this context. I will explain how to construct the essential key quantity in this framework, the time-dependent Dyson map and metric and solutions to the time-dependent Schrödinger equation, in an algebraic fashion, using time-dependent Darboux transformations, utilising Lewis-Riesenfeld invariants, point transformations and some approximation methods. I comment on the ambiguities of this metric and demonstrate that this can even lead to infinite series of metric operators. I conclude with some applications to PT-symmetrically coupled oscillators, demonstrate the equivalence of the time-dependent double wells and unstable anharmonic oscillators and show how the unphysical PT-symmetrically broken regions in the parameter space for the time-independent theory becomes physical in the explicitly time-dependent systems. I discuss how this leads to a prolongation of the otherwise rapidly decaying von Neumann entropy. The so-called sudden death of the entropy is stopped at a finite value. 1

Abstract:We explore a dynamic signature of quantum phase transition (QPT) in an isotropic Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick (LMG) model by studying the time evolution of a central qubit coupled to it. We evaluate exactly the time-dependent purity, which can be used to measure quantum coherence, of the central qubit. It is found that distinctly different behaviors of the purity as a function of the parameter reveal clearly the QPT point in the system. It is also clarified that the present model is equivalent to an anti-Jaynes-Cummings model under certain conditions.
Multicritical quantum sensors driven by symmetry-breaking

Abstract:Quantum criticality has been demonstrated as a useful quantum resource for parameter estimation. This includes second-order, topological and localization transitions. In all these works reported so far, gap-to-gapless transition at criticality has been identified as the ultimate resource for achieving the quantum enhanced sensing, although there are several important concepts associated with criticality, such as long-range correlation, symmetry breaking. In this work, we analytically demonstrate that symmetry-breaking can drive a quantum enhanced sensing in single- or multiparameter estimation. We show this in the well-known Kitaev model, a lattice version of the 1D p-wave superconductor, which consists of a pairing term and an onsite potential term. The model is characterized by two critical lines and a multi-critical point at the intersection of these two lines. We show that Heisenberg scaling can be obtained in precision measurement of the superconducting coupling by preparing the system at or near the multicritical point despite the fact that parameter variation follows the critical lines, i.e., without an explicit requirement of gap-to-gapless transition. Quantum enhancement in such situations solely occurs due to a global U(1) symmetry-breaking by the pairing term. Extending our analysis in the realm of multiparameter estimation we show that it is possible to obtain super-Heisenberg scaling by combining the effects of symmetry-breaking and gapless-to-gapped transition.

Abstract:The Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition is the paradigmatic example of a topological phase transition without symmetry breaking, where a quasiordered phase, characterized by a power-law scaling of the correlation functions at low temperature, is disrupted by the proliferation of topological excitations above the critical temperature T_{BKT}. In this Letter, we consider the effect of long-range decaying couplings ∼r^{-2-σ} on the BKT transition. After pointing out the relevance of this nontrivial problem, we discuss the phase diagram, which is far richer than the corresponding short-range one. It features-for 7/4<σ<2-a quasiordered phase in a finite temperature range T_{c}<T<T_{BKT}, which occurs between a symmetry broken phase for T<T_{c} and a disordered phase for T>T_{BKT}. The transition temperature T_{c} displays unique universal features quite different from those of the traditional, short-range XY model. Given the universal nature of our findings, they may be observed in current experimental realizations in 2D atomic, molecular, and optical quantum systems.
