Abstract:Trace metals are a group of toxic pollutants that can cause serious damage to ecosystems and humans. To determine the distribution characteristics of aqueous trace metal contamination and identify critical pollution sources, it is necessary to develop a detailed estimation of trace metal emissions. By considering emission-related factors in each industrial sector, we estimate that the emissions were approximately 2, 61 t, 2,684 t, 301 t and 309 t for mercury, cadmium, chromium, arsenic and lead, respectively, in 2010 in China. These values are much higher than those provided in annual statistical reports. Our research identified critical emissions sources, including Shandong, Henan, Jiangsu and Guangdong Provinces and Raw Chemical, Non-ferrous Smelting, Non-ferrous Mining and Metal Products industries. However, Shandong and Metal Products are ignored in ‘The Twelfth 5-Year Plan for Complete Control of Trace Metal Pollution’. This research generally found that the allowable discharge levels had a significant impact on specific sectors. Total emissions are much lower than the maximum allowable under current Chinese emissions regulations but exceed limits recommended by Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (European Union). Furthermore, our study found that many regions located along upstream reaches of the Yangtze River, like Sichuan Province, are sources of cross-boundary pollution.

Model results indicated that the emission from cement production was the largest contributor to Hg deposition, accounting for 13.0%, followed by coal-fired power plants (6.5%), non-ferrous metal smelting (5.4%), iron and steel production (3.5%), and municipal solid waste incineration (3.4%). The point sources that released a higher fraction of gaseous oxidized mercury, such as cement production and municipal solid waste incineration, were the most significant contributors to local deposition. In this intensive industrialized region, large point sources contributed 67-94% of total Hg deposition of 6 receptors which were the nearest grid-cells from top five Hg emitters of the domain and the largest municipal solid waste incinerator in Guangzhou. Based on the source apportionment results, cement production and the rapidly growing municipal solid waste incineration are identified as priority sectors for Hg emission control in the cPRD region. Abstract:China is the largest atmospheric mercury (Hg) emitter in the world. Its Hg emissions and environmental impacts need to be evaluated. In this study, China's Hg emission inventory is updated to 2007 and applied in the GEOS-Chem model to simulate the Hg concentrations and depositions in China. Results indicate that simulations agree well with observed background Hg concentrations. The anthropogenic sources contributed 35-50% of THg concentration and 50-70% of total deposition in polluted regions. Sensitivity analysis was performed to assess the impacts of mercury emissions from power plants, non-ferrous metal smelters and cement plants. It is found that power plants are the most important emission sources in the North China, the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) and the Pearl River Delta (PRD) while the contribution of non-ferrous metal smelters is most significant in the Southwest China. The impacts of cement plants are significant in the YRD, PRD and Central China.

Abstract:This paper provides a general review of the research status of mercury emissions in China. Global surveys rank Asia as the region with the largest share of global mercury emissions, accounting for almost half. China contributes about one-third of the world’s mercury emissions, which is 600–800 t per year. And thus, it plays a vital role in reducing global mercury emissions. Data since 2003 has been surveyed. Mercury emissions in China have risen in the beginning and then declined. There are differences in the composition of mercury emissions sources between China and the world, in which coal combustion and non-ferrous metals smelting contribute more than 50% of the emissions in China. Although mercury emission standards in China are close to those of the European Union and the United States, annual mercury emissions in China are four times higher than those of the United States. Mercury emissions in China are concentrated in the central and eastern regions now, but the annual mercury emissions are increasing in the western regions, which may be related to the construction of industrial parks.

Abstract:This study developed an up-to-date and point-source-based inventory of mercury (Hg) releases to water in China by applying probabilistic release factors that combined industry removal efficiencies, reuse of reclaimed water, and receiving water types. In 2017, the national mercury release to water was estimated to be 50 (35–66) tons, in which 47%, 8%, 7%, and 25% were from nonferrous metal smelting, vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) production, coal-fired boilers, and domestic sewage, respectively. Approximately 95% of mercury was released to inland rivers, and the rest was discharged to lakes or coastal water. The significant sources were identified based on their mercury releases to water. The control of mercury release to water in China shall focus on zinc smelting plants, municipal sewage treatment plants, and the VCM production process. For zinc smelting plants, China can tighten the limit of mercury concentration in discharged wastewater and combine Hg-catcher device in traditional integrated treatment. For municipal sewage treatment plants and the VCM production process, promoting processes of Hg-free production can reduce mercury inputs at the source. Abstract:Mercury (Hg) is of global concern because of its adverse effects on humans and the environment. In addition to long-range atmospheric transport, Hg emissions can be geographically relocated through economic trade. Here, we investigate the effect of China's interregional trade on atmospheric Hg deposition over China, using an atmospheric transport model and multiregional input-output analysis. In general, total atmospheric Hg deposition over China is 408.8 Mg yr-1, and 32% of this is embodied in China's interregional trade, with the hotspots occurring over Gansu, Henan, Hebei, and Yunnan provinces. Interprovincial trade considerably redistributes atmospheric Hg deposition over China, with a range in deposition flux from -104% to +28%. Developed regions, such as the Yangtze River Delta (Shanghai, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang) and Guangdong, avoid Hg deposition over their geographical boundaries, instead causing additional Hg deposition over developing provinces. Bilateral interaction among provinces is strong over some regions, suggesting a need for joint mitigation, such as the Jing-Jin-Ji region (Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei) and the Yangtze River Delta. Transferring advanced technology from developed regions to their developing trade partners would be an effective measure to mitigate China's Hg pollution. Our findings are relevant to interprovincial efforts to reduce trans-boundary Hg pollution in China.

Abstract:China is the largest contributor to global atmospheric mercury (Hg), and accurate emission inventories in China are needed to reduce large gaps existing in global Hg mass balance estimates and assess Hg effects on various ecosystems. The China Atmospheric Mercury Emission (CAME) model was developed in this study using probabilistic emission factors generated from abundant on-site measurements and literature data. Using this model, total anthropogenic Hg emissions were estimated to be continuously increasing from 356 t in 2000 to 538 t in 2010 with an average annual increase rate of 4.2%. Industrial coal combustion, coal-fired power plants, nonferrous metal smelting, and cement production were identified to be the dominant Hg emission sources in China. The ten largest contributing provinces accounted for nearly 60% of the total Hg emissions in 2010. Speciated Hg emission inventory was developed over China with a grid-resolution of 36 × 36 km, providing needed emission fields for Hg transport models. In this new inventory, the sectoral Hg speciation profiles were significantly improved based on the latest data from field measurements and more detailed technology categorization. The overall uncertainties of the newly developed inventory were estimated to be in the range of -20% to +23%.

Abstract:Mercury pollution control has become a global goal. The accurate estimate of long-term mercury emissions in China is critical to evaluate the global mercury budget and the emission reduction potentials. In this study, we used a technology-based approach to compile a consistent series of China's atmospheric mercury emissions at provincial level from 1978 to 2014. China totally emitted 13 294 t of anthropogenic mercury to air during 1978-2014, in which gaseous elemental mercury, gaseous oxidized mercury, and particulate-bound mercury accounted for 58.2%, 37.1%, and 4.7%, respectively. The mercury removed during this period were 2085 t in coal-fired power plants (counting 49% of mercury input), 7259 t in Zn smelting (79%), 771 t in coal-fired industrial boilers (25%), and 658 tin cement production plants (27%), respectively. Annual mercury emissions increased from 147 tin 1978 to 530 t in 2014. Both sectoral and spatial emissions of atmospheric mercury experienced significant changes. The largest mercury emission source evolved from coal-fired industrial boilers before 1998, to zinc smelting during 1999-2004, coal-fired power plants during 2005-2008, finally to cement production after 2009. Coal-fired industrial boilers and cement production have become critical hotpots for China's mercury pollution control.
Regional source apportionment of trace metals in fine particulate matter using an observation-constrained hybrid model

Abstract:Trace metals in fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) are of significant concern in environmental chemistry due to their toxicity and catalytic capability. An observation-constrained hybrid model is developed to resolve regional source contributions to trace metals and other primary species in PM 2.5 . In this method, source contributions to primary PM 2.5 (PPM 2.5 ) from the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) Model at each monitoring location are improved to align better with the observation data by applying source-specific scaling factors estimated from a unique regression model. The adjusted PPM 2.5 predictions and chemical speciation data are then used to generate observation-constrained source profiles of primary species. Finally, spatial distributions of their source contributions are produced by multiplying the improved CMAQ PPM 2.5 contributions with the deduced source profiles. The model is applied to the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region, China using daily observation data collected at multiple stations in 2015 to resolve source contributions to 8 trace metals, elemental carbon, primary organic carbon, and 10 other primary species. Compared to three previous methods, the new model predicts 13 species with smaller model errors and 16 species with less model biases in 10-fold cross validation analysis. The source profiles determined in this study also show good agreement with those collected from the literature. The new model shows that during 2015 in the PRD region, Cu is mainly from the area sources (31%), industry sector (27%), and power generation (20%), with an annual average concentration as high as 50 ng m −3 in some districts. Meanwhile, major contributors to Mn are area sources (40%), emission from outside PRD (23%) and power generation (17%), leading to a mean level of around 10 ng m −3 . Such information is essential in assessing the epidemiological impacts of trace metals as well as formulating effective control measures to protect public health.

Abstract:The Pearl River Delta (PRD) of China, which has a population of more than 58 million people, is one of the largest agglomerations of cities in the world and had severe PM2.5 pollution at the beginning of this century. Due to the implementation of strong pollution control in recent decades, PM2.5 in the PRD has continuously decreased to relatively lower levels in China. To comprehensively understand the current PM2.5 sources in the PRD to support future air pollution control strategies in similar regions, we performed regional-scale PM2.5 field observations coupled with a state-of-the-art source apportionment model at six sites in four seasons in 2015. The regional annual average PM2.5 concentration based on the 4-month sampling was determined to be 37 mu g m(-3), which is still more than 3 times the WHO standard, with organic matter (36.9 %) and SO42- (23.6 %) as the most abundant species. A novel multilinear engine (ME-2) model was first applied to a comprehensive PM2.5 chemical dataset to perform source apportionment with predetermined constraints, producing more environmentally meaningful results compared to those obtained using traditional positive matrix factorization (PMF) modeling. The regional annual average PM2.5 source structure in the PRD was retrieved to be secondary sulfate (21 %), vehicle emissions (14 %), industrial emissions (13 %), secondary nitrate (11 %), biomass burning (11 %), secondary organic aerosol (SOA, 7 %), coal burning (6 %), fugitive dust (5 %), ship emissions (3 %) and aged sea salt (2 %). Analyzing the spatial distribution of PM2.5 sources under different weather conditions clearly identified the central PRD area as the key emission area for SO2, NOx, coal burning, biomass burning, industrial emissions and vehicle emissions. It was further estimated that under the polluted northerly air flow in winter, local emissions in the central PRD area accounted for approximately 45% of the total PM2.5, with secondary nitrate and biomass burning being most abundant; in contrast, the regional transport from outside the PRD accounted for more than half of PM2.5, with secondary sulfate representing the most abundant transported species.
Development of Mercury Emission Inventory from Coal Combustion in China

Abstract:Mercury emission inventory by province from coal combustion in China was developed by combining fuel consumption, mercury content in fuel and emission factors after combustion in this study. The study is intended to provide an understanding of mercury transformation, transportation and deposition in atmosphere, as well as propose measures to control mercury pollution in China. Mercury emission sources were classified into 65 categories by economic sectors, fuel types, boiler types and pollution control technologies. For two different data sets of mercury content in coal the total amounts of mercury released into atmosphere in 2000 in China were estimated at about 161.6 tons and 219.5 tons, respectively. The biggest three source sectors were industry, power plants, and residential use, contributing 46%, 35% and 14% of total mercury emissions, respectively. The shares of elemental mercury (Hg0), oxidized mercury (Hg2+ ) and particulate mercury (Hgp) were 16% , 61% and 23% , respectively. The spatial distribution of mercury emissions from coal combustion in China is not uniform. Henan, Shanxi, Hebei, Liaoning and Jiangsu contributed large amounts of mercury emissions, exceeding 10t x a(- 1).

Abstract:China was considered the biggest contributor for airborne mercury in the world but the amount of mercury emission in effluents and solid wastes has not been documented. In this study, total national and regional mercury emission to the environment via exhaust gases, effluents and solid wastes were accounted with updated emission factors and the amount of goods produced and/or consumed. The national mercury emission in China increased from 448 to 2151 tons during the 1980-2012 period. Nearly all of the emissions were ended up as exhaust gases and solid wastes. The proportion of exhaust gases decreased with increasing share of solid wastes and effluents. Of all the anthropogenic sources, coal was the most important contributor in quantity, followed by mercury mining, gold smelting, nonferrous smelting, iron steel production, domestic wastes, and cement production, with accounting for more than 90% of the total emission. There was a big variation of regional cumulative mercury emission during 1980 -2012 in China, with higher emissions occurred in eastern areas and lower values in the western and far northern regions. The biggest cumulative emission occurred in GZ (Guizhou), reaching 3974 t, while the smallest cumulative emission was lower than 10 t in XZ (Tibet). Correspondingly, mercury accumulation in soil were higher in regions with larger emissions in unit area. Therefore, it is urgent to reduce anthropogenic mercury emission and subsequent impact on ecological functions and human health. (C) 2017 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract:Abstract. Mercury (Hg) is a global toxic pollutant that can be released into the atmosphere through anthropogenic and natural sources. The uncertainties in the estimated emission amounts are much larger from natural than anthropogenic sources. A method was developed in the present study to quantify the contributions of natural surface mercury emissions to ambient gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) concentrations through application of positive matrix factorization (PMF) analysis with temperature and NH3 as indicators of GEM emissions from natural surfaces. GEM concentrations were continuously monitored at a 2-hourly resolution at a regional background site in the Yangtze River Delta in eastern China during 2015–2018. Annual average GEM concentrations were in the range of 2.03–3.01 ng m−3, with a strong decreasing trend at a rate of -0.32±0.07 ng m−3 yr−1 from 2015 to 2018, which was mostly caused by reduced anthropogenic emissions since 2013. The estimated contributions from natural surface emissions of mercury to the ambient GEM concentrations were in the range of 1.00–1.13 ng m−3 on annual average, with insignificant interannual changes, but the relative contribution increased significantly from 41 % in 2015 to 57 % in 2018, gradually surpassing those from anthropogenic sources.

Abstract:The mercury model of the Community Multi-scale Air Quality modeling system(CMAQ-Hg) is introduced and applied to gain initial insights into atmospheric mercury concentrations in China.The modeling period is from June 24th to July 31st,2005.The simulation results show that higher mercury concentrations appear in areas near large anthropogenic emission sources,such as mercury mining areas and locations of coal-fired power plants and metal smelters.The simulated monthly average gaseous elemental mercury(GEM) concentration is higher than that of reactive gaseous mercury(RGM) and particulate mercury(PHG).The above results demonstrate the model infrastructure of using CMAQ-Hg to simulate atmospheric mercury in China,and the concentration distributions of GEM,RGM and PHG caused by their emission and physical and chemical processes in the atmosphere.With updated mercury emission inventory data and customizing the model's operating parameters,CMAQ-Hg shows promise as a powerful tool for assessing atmospheric mercury pollution and its long-range transport in China.

Abstract:Top-down analysis of virtual atmospheric mercury emission networks can direct efficient demand-side policy making on mercury reductions. Taking China the world's top atmospheric mercury emitter as a case, we identify key contributors to China's atmospheric mercury emissions from both the producer and the consumer perspectives. China totally discharged 794.9 tonnes of atmospheric mercury emissions in 2007. China's production-side control policies should mainly focus on key direct mercury emitters such as Liaoning, Hebei, Shandong, Shanxi, Henan, Hunan, Guizhou, Yunnan, and Inner Mongolia provinces and sectors producing metals, nonmetallic mineral products, and electricity and heat power, while demand-side policies should mainly focus on key underlying drivers of mercury emissions such as Shandong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Guangdong provinces and sectors of construction activities and equipment manufacturing. China's interregional embodied atmospheric mercury flows are generally moving from the inland to the east coast. Beijing Tianjin (with 4.8 tonnes of net mercury inflows) and South Coast (with 3.3 tonnes of net mercury inflows) are two largest net-inflow regions, while North (with 5.3 tonnes of net mercury outflows) is the largest net-outflow region. We also identify primary supply chains contributing to China's virtual atmospheric mercury emission network, which can be used to trace the transfers of production-side and demand-side policy effects.
Atmospheric Mercury Concentration and Chemical Speciation at a Rural Site in Beijing, China: Implications of Mercury Emission Sources

Abstract:Continuous measurements of atmospheric mercury concentration and speciation play a key role in identifying mercury sources and its behavior in the atmosphere. In this study, speciated atmospheric mercury including gaseous elemental mercury (GEM), reactive gaseous mercury (RGM) and particle-bound mercury (PBM) were continuously measured at Miyun, a rural site in Beijing, China, from December 2008 to November 2009. The average GEM, RGM and PBM concentrations were found to be 3.22 ± 1.74, 10.1 ± 18.8 and 98.2 ± 112.7 pg m−3, respectively, about 2–20 times higher than the background concentration of the Northern Hemisphere. The results indicated that atmospheric mercury concentrations in northern China were highly affected by anthropogenic emissions. The atmospheric mercury showed obvious seasonal variations, with the highest seasonal average GEM concentration in summer (3.48 ng m−3) and the lowest value in winter (2.66 ng m−3). In autumn and winter a diurnal variation of GEM was observed, with peak levels in the late afternoon till midnight. Most of the high RGM concentration values occurred in the afternoon of all seasons due to the higher oxidation. The PBM concentration was higher in early morning of all seasons because of the the temperature inversion that increases in depth as the night proceeds. The ratio of GEM to CO indicates that residential boilers play an important role in the elevation of GEM in winter. The ratio of RGM to O3 could be an indicator of the contribution of local primary sources. The ratio of PBM to PM2.5 reveals that the air mass from the east and southwest of the site in spring and summer carries more atmospheric mercury. The HYSPLIT back-trajectory analysis indicated that the monitoring site is affected by local, regional and interregional sources simultaneously during heavy pollution episodes. The results from the potential source contribution function (PSCF) model indicate that the atmospheric transport predominantly from the northwest contributes to the elevated atmospheric mercury in winter and autumn, while the North China Plain (NCP) region and the northern part of the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region are the major source areas for mercury pollution in spring and summer.
Assessment of Regional Mercury Deposition and Emission Outflow in Mainland China

Abstract:Mainland China is the largest emission region of anthropogenic mercury (Hg) in the world. There have been concerns regarding the emission outflow and chemical transport budget of Hg in the region. Earlier assessments of Hg chemical transport were based on relatively outdated emission data. Recent estimates for anthropogenic (Wu et al., 2016, https://doi.org/10.1021/acs.est.6b04308) and natural Hg emissions (X. Wang, Lin, et al., 2016, https://doi.org/10.5194/acp‐16‐11125‐2016) show substantial differences from earlier emission inventories. In this study, we applied the updated Hg emission estimates to reassess the regional transport budget using Community Multiscale Air Quality‐Hg v5.1. Our results show that the variation of simulated concentration, deposition, and associated emission outflow of Hg are primarily influenced by the spatial‐temporal variation of Hg emissions, monsoon shifts, and particulate matter pollution in China. Total Hg deposition in Mainland China is estimated to be 422 Mg/year, and approximately two thirds of the deposition is contributed by domestic emissions. The net Hg transport budget from Mainland China is 511 Mg/year, contributing to 10% of Hg deposition in other regions of the world. This reassessment points to a ~25% reduction in total annual outflow compared to the previous estimate by Lin et al. (2010, https://doi.org/10.5194/acp‐10‐1853‐2010). Such reduction is mainly caused by changes in Hg emission quantity, speciation, and spatial/temporal distributions. More modeling studies focusing on reducing uncertainties of emission inventories and Hg atmospheric chemistry are needed for continuous assessment of Hg emission outflow in this emission‐intensive region.
Mercury stable isotopes revealing the atmospheric mercury circulation: A review of particulate bound mercury in China

Abstract:Human activities since industrialization have significantly raised global atmospheric mercury (Hg) levels. China's high Hg emissions with rapid industrial development have a global impact on implementing the Minamata Convention on Mercury due to the dispersion of atmospheric Hg. Here, we comprehensively reviewed the atmospheric particulate bound mercury (PBM) in China, given its highest deposition rate, aiming to elucidate Hg sources, transformation, and geochemical cycles. Firstly, we analyzed its spatiotemporal distribution and long-term trends in China by synthesizing published literature. Most of the studies were conducted in eastern China, where PBM concentrations are higher than in western China due to extensive anthropogenic emissions. Furthermore, meteorological factors and atmospheric transport significantly affect seasonal PBM variations. Local anthropogenic sources, atmospheric transport, and local atmospheric transformation contribute 56.2%, 14.9%, and 29.0% to China's PBM content, respectively. Notably, China's atmospheric PBM concentrations have declined significantly since 2015. Secondly, we compiled a comprehensive global Hg isotope dataset and employed structural equation modeling to quantify Hg geochemical cycling. The isotope ratios of atmospheric Hg primarily overlap with those of Hg raw materials and vegetation. The significant relationship ( P < 0.01) between atmospheric Hg and Hg raw materials (0.91) and vegetation (1.78) suggests that they contribute significantly to atmospheric Hg. Besides water and fish, atmospheric Hg also shows a high regression coefficient with human Hg, raising concerns about direct human inhalation of atmospheric Hg. Thirdly, we combined compiled Hg isotopes with machine learning to predict PBM sources in China. Industrial activities, biomass burning, and soil/dust are the primary contributors to PBM in China, accounting for 58.67%, 22.11%, and 17.14%, respectively. Our findings indicate that the contribution of soil/dust to PBM, ranging from 0.51% to 56.42%, has been underrated in previous studies. It is feasible to trace atmospheric Hg transport using Hg isotopes, as PBM mainly undergoes photoreduction reactions, but quantifying regional Hg transport remains challenging.
