Abstract:In this paper, we propose a method to improve the contrast of image by using both radially symmetrical conjugating phase masks. The method is based on the generation of synthetic optical transfer function (OTF) from OTFs of both radially symmetrical conjugating phase masks. Both quartic phase mask (QPM) and its conjugating phase mask (cQPM) are used as an example. Two images are captured by QPM and cQPM. In Fourier domain, a combination of both QPM and cQPM produces the improvement of the contrast of images in all spatial frequency positions. The simulation results demonstrated that the contrast improvement of image of proposed method is obtained.

Abstract:Optical imaging systems with extended depth of field based on wavefront coding can be used in many fields, which require more object information along the optical axis in a snapshot. When using the non-rotational symmetric phase masks such as cubic phase mask, the final images are usually restored by classical wiener restoration method. However, the existence of image artifacts in final restored images is a problem to be solved. We proposed a method to alleviate the image artifacts by processing two conjugate images, which are captured by image sensor before and after rotating the phase mask 180 degrees along the optical axis. Unlike the previous methods usually need to measure the point spread function or optical transfer function of the imaging system, we do not need to measure them anymore. Both the ZEMAX simulation and experiment verified our method.

Abstract:This study proposes a gradient descent method for enhancing the quality of reconstructed images encoded by double-phase holograms (DPHs). Holographic displays are often noisy because of optical hardware problems. However, owing to the conversion from complex-amplitude holograms to phase-only holograms, the reconstructed images still have noise and cannot be ignored. In this paper, the proposed method uses a spectrum loss function instead of image loss function in the gradient descent optimization process. The spectrum loss function ensures that DPHs can be optimized by gradient descent method, and this method requires only several iterations. The simulations and experimental results have validated the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:A band-limited double-phase hologram (DPH) is proposed based on the single-pixel on-axis double-phase technique. The proposed band-limited DPH introduces a band-limited function into the propagation calculation and previously remove high-noise frequency components. The reconstruction is equipped with a higher spatial resolution and an expanded SBP by enabling the enlargement of the aperture in 4-f system.

Abstract:Limited by the property of charge-coupled device (CCD), the recording optical path of in-line digital holography is commonly used to take full advantage of the CCD sampling space, which is in order to improve the performance of digital holographic measurement. But the reconstructed image of in-line digital holography is overlapped by the direct wave and the conjugate image, which is hard to be separated. To achieve the real-time high-resolution measurement of in-line digital holography, the dual-CCD single-exposure cepstrum phase-shifting in-line digital holography is put forward, which is based on the single phase-shifting cepstrum technology. Then two key technical schemes of this technology, including the method of adjusting dual-CCD's mirroring overlapping position and the optical structure of dual-CCD single-exposure π/2 phase-shifting, are given. Finally, the experimental results show that, the dual-CCD single-exposure cepstrum phase-shifting in-line digital holography can solve the overlapping problem well. Moreover, the real-time recording and reconstruction of in-line digital holography are initially realized.

Abstract:Computer-generated holography provides an approach to modulate the optical wavefront with computationally synthesized holograms. Since the hardware implementation for complex wavefronts is not yet available, double-phase decomposition is utilized as a complex encoding method of converting a complex wavefront to a double-phase hologram. The double-phase hologram adapts a complex wavefront for the phase-type devices, but the reconstruction is plagued by the noise caused by spatial-shifting errors. Here, a spectral-envelope modulated double-phase method is proposed to suppress the spatial-shifting noise with an off-axis envelope modulation on the Fourier spectrum of a double-phase hologram. This proposed method out-performs conventional on-axis double-phase method in optical reconstructing accuracy with indicated 9.54% improvement in PSNR and 196.86% improvement in SSIM.

Abstract:This Letter describes an approach to encode complex-amplitude light waves with spatiotemporal double-phase holograms(DPHs) for overcoming the limit of the space-bandwidth product(SBP) delivered by existing methods. To construct DPHs, two spatially macro-pixel encoded phase components are employed in the SBP-preserved resampling of complex holograms. Four generated sub-DPHs are displayed sequentially in time for high-quality holographic image reconstruction without reducing the image size or discarding any image terms when the DPHs are interweaved. The reconstructed holographic images contain more details and less speckle noise, with their signal-to-noise ratio and structure similarity index being improved by 14.64% and 78.79%,respectively.

Abstract:A recording method to suppress the zero-order diffraction term in an off-axial digital hologram and to improve its effective bandwidth is proposed.The method records the hologram on the condition that the reference intensity is more stronger than that of the object.Then,the recorded hologram is normalized by the recorded reference intensity beforehand.The natural logarithm operation and Hilbert transform are applied to the normal hologram to suppress the zero-order diffraction and the object complex field is recovered by an exponential operation.The theory of the method is analyzed.It shows that the logarithm operation can suppress the zero-order term and the Hilbert transform can filter the desired term.Finally,the experiments are performed to validate the method.The results show that the method can suppress the zero-order diffraction term efficiently even in the case of the strong spectral overlap between the zero-order term and the diffraction orders.The influence of the intensity ratio of the light of reference to that of object on the suppression efficient of zero-order diffraction term is analyzed.It shows that the zero-order term can be efficiently suppressed through the proposed method when the intensity ratio is above 5.

Abstract:This study proposes a method for reducing the crosstalk effect in phase-only spatial light modulators (SLMs) for double-phase holograms (DPHs). New encoding equations for DPHs are deduced according to the crosstalk model of the SLM. The crosstalk effect of the SLM is obtained via measurement of the diffraction efficiency of binary phase gratings as opposed to measurement of the point spread function. The results of experiments indicate that this method can significantly improve the image quality of DPHs in the optical reconstruction.

Abstract:An iterative method with bandwidth constraint strategy is proposed to design phase holograms for high-quality speckle-free optical reconstruction. The bandwidth properties of the reconstructed field are analyzed theoretically based on the sampling theory, which helps in properly allocating the sampling resources for efficiently describing the speckles and artifacts in the reconstructed field. Iterative calculation with bandwidth constraint strategy of the reconstructed field and quadratic initial phase can optimize the phase hologram without stagnation problem, which provides effective controls of the reconstructed intensity fluctuations and helps to suppress the speckles and artifacts. Numerical and optical experiments have been performed to validate the proposed method can achieve excellent image fidelity.

Abstract:Computer-generated holography has shown the ability of diffractive calculation and digital encoding for optical wavefronts. The optical wavefronts can be reconstructed through the coherent illuminating onto computer-generated holograms. But the spatial bandwidth product of computer-generated holography is still limited by existing digital modulating elements, resulting in a degraded optical reconstruction with excessive noises introduced by amplitude encoding or phase encoding. Complex-modulated holography encodes the complex-amplitude wavefronts with existing optical elements and avoids the discarding of amplitude or phase. It possesses the advantages of high calculating efficiency, high spatial bandwidth product and high reconstructing accuracy. The double-phase decomposition is a promising complex-modulating method with high theoretical maturity and optical reliability, making it highly desired and of great value in the future three-dimensional holographic display. This paper reviews the principle and recent progress of complex-modulated holographic display, especially the recent researches based on the double-phase complex modulation using liquid crystal spatial light modulators.

Abstract:Computer generated holography has attracted great interest in nonlinear wavefront shaping or imaging. Due to the fabrication limitations of the nonlinear crystal structure, the classical binary encoding method is adopted in most nonlinear wavefront shaping, which has obvious shortcomings in imaging efficiency and quality. An improved two-dimensional quasi-multivalue-encoding method is proposed to construct high-efficiency and high-quality nonlinear manipulation. Theoretical and experimental results indicate that the two-dimensional quasi-multivalued encoding method generates images more delicately and decreases diffraction compared to classical binary encoding method. This modified approach offers broad applications in the fields of polarization control, information storage, and nonlinear manipulation.

Speckle reduction method for holographic display based on optimized phase modulation

Abstract:We present a speckle reduction method to generate phase holograms with high-quality optical reconstruction based on optimized phase modulation. An initial phase with continuous and band-limited spectrum is utilized to iteratively optimize the phase modulation in the image plane. The optimized phase is used to modulate the object wave field, and the phase hologram is then calculated from the modulated object wave field. Phase distribution of the reconstructed image with our method is smoothly distributed and contains less phase singularities, which helps to reduce speckle noise in optical reconstruction. The proposed method can improve the reconstruction quality effectively, and eliminate the speckle noise induced by the random diffuse phase.

Abstract:Holographic imaging is degraded severely by the speckle or incoherent noise. In this work, resampling mask method based on phase-shifting digital holography is proposed to reduce the reconstruction noise. The zero-order and the conjugate term of the hologram can be eliminated with four-step phase-shifting digital holography (PSDH). The complex amplitude of the object after propagation can be calculated by the phase-shifting algorithm. A phase-only spatial light modulator is used to realize PSDH in the experiment. The complex amplitude is encoded into several parts by resampling masks. A high quality reconstruction image with low noise is achieved through the superposition of the individually reconstruction of coded complex amplitudes. The experiment data go well with the asymptotic function. This method can be used for digital holographic imaging of the biological samples and microstructures. Experimental results prove the feasibility of this proposed method.
Phase-probability shaping for speckle-free holographic lithography

Abstract:Optical holography has undergone rapid development since its invention in 1948, but the accompanying speckles with randomly distributed intensity are still untamed now due to the fundamental difficulty of eliminating intrinsic fluctuations from irregular complex-field superposition. Despite spatial, temporal and spectral averages for speckle reduction, it is extremely challenging to reconstruct high-homogeneity, edge-sharp and shape-unlimited images via holography. Here we predict that holographic speckles can be removed by narrowing the probability density distribution of encoded phase to homogenize optical superposition. Guided by this physical insight, a machine-learning-assisted probability-shaping (MAPS) method is developed to prohibit the fluctuations of intensity in a computer-generated hologram (CGH), which empowers the experimental reconstruction of irregular images with ultralow speckle contrast (C=0.08) and record-high edge sharpness (~1000 mm-1). It breaks the ultimate barrier of demonstrating high-end CGH lithography, thus enabling us to successfully pattern arbitrary-shape and edge-sharp structures such as vortex gratings and two-dimensional random barcodes.
