Abstract:Aim. It is well known that Fe-Co-Si alloys are excellent soft magnetic materials. However, their rapid solidification mechanisms and rapid dendritic growth mechanisms are not clear. We now present our preliminary results of exploration on the two mechanisms for Fe-32.29%Co-20.33%Si ternary alloy, which is undercooled up to 378 K (0.25TL). In the full paper, we explain our exploration results in some detail; in this abstract, we just add some pertinent remarks to listing the two topics of explanation. The first topic is: the experimental method. In this topic, we use the glass fluxing method to realize rapid solidification and use differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD) meter and scanning electronic microscope (SEM) to characterize the samples of the alloy. The second topic is: the experimental results and their analysis. Its first subtopic is: DSC thermal analysis and phase constitution. The DSC analysis shows that the solidus and liquidus temperatures of the alloy are 1148 K and 1535 K respectively. The solidified microstructure consists of α(Co, Fe)2Si and (Fe, Co)5Si3 phases within the undercooling range of 98-378 K. When the alloy melt begins to solidify, metastable supersaturated β(Co, Fe)2Si solid solution phase forms first. During the subsequent precipitation transition, (Fe, Co)5Si3 phase appears and metastable β(Co, Fe)2Si phase transforms into stable α(Co, Fe)2Si phase. The second subtopic of the second topic is: solidification microstructures under nonequilibrium condition. The typical solidification microstructures at various undercoolings are presented in Fig.3. (Fe, Co)5Si3 phase generates mainly inner α(Co, Fe)2Si grains, while a few (Fe, Co)5Si3 grains nucleate on α(Co, Fe)2Si grain boundaries. The third subtopic of the second topic is: dendritic growth mechanism of (Co, Fe)2Si. The measured β(Co, Fe)2Si dendritic growth velocities in Fe-32.29%Co-20.33%Si are shown in Fig.4(a). As undercooling increases, the dendritic growth velocity of β(Co, Fe)2Si phase increases according to the exponential relation: V=0.04e0.01ΔT.
