Abstract:Aims: The effects of exogenously applied salicylic acid (SA) on gas exchange characteristics, photosynthetic pigments and chloroplast ultrastructure were investigated in gerbera at their reproductive stage under salt-stressed conditions. Methodology: A pot experiment was conducted under glasshouse conditions at the Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China, (30° N/120° E) between February 2008 and March 2009.Plants, pretreated with foliar applications of 0, 0.5, and 1.0 mmoldm-3 SA at the onset of flower initiation were irrigated with 100 mmoldm-3NaCl(aq) for two weeks, starting after three days from the SA pretreatment. Control did not receive either NaCl or SA.Photosynthetic rate, gas exchange, photosynthetic pigments content and chloroplast ultrastructure were investigated against treatments. All data were subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Generalized Linear Model (GLM) using SAS statistical software. Pearson’s correlation test was carried out to study the relationships among the parameters. The means were compared using Duncan’s multiple range test (DMRT). For all the tests, P< .05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Salt stress adversely affected the gas exchange characteristics, photosynthetic pigment contents and chloroplast ultrastructure. SA application significantly increased the net photosynthesis, stomatal conductivity, intra-cellular CO2 content and transpiration rate but decreased the stomatal limitation, compared to those of untreated salt-stressed plants. Further, the enhanced photosynthetic pigment contents and notably undamaged chloroplast ultrastructure were evident of the ameliorative effects of SA on photosynthetic system under salt stress. Of the two concentrations tested, 0.5 mmoldm-3 SA concentration seemed to have greater effect throughout the experiment showing no significant variation from control in some attributes (chlorophyll contents and chloroplast ultrastructure). Conclusion: Responses of plants pretreated with SA spraying and significant correlation among them plausibly suggest SA-induced enhancement of photosynthetic system as another target for conferring salt tolerance in crop plants.
Salicylic Acid Stimulates Antioxidant Defense and Osmolyte Metabolism to Alleviate Oxidative Stress in Watermelons under Excess Boron

Abstract:Boron (B) is a microelement required in vascular plants at a high concentration that produces excess boron and toxicity in many crops. B stress occurs widely and limits plant growth and crop productivity worldwide. Salicylic acid (SA) is an essential hormone in plants and is a phenolic compound. The goal of this work is to explore the role of SA in the alleviation of excess B (10 mg L−1) in watermelon plants at a morphological and biochemical level. Excess boron altered the nutrient concentrations and caused a significant reduction in morphological criteria; chlorophyll a, b, and carotenoids; net photosynthetic rate; and the stomatal conductance and transpiration rate of watermelon seedlings, while intercellular carbon dioxide (CO2) was significantly increased compared to the control plants (0.5 mg L−1 B). Furthermore, excess boron accelerated the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and induced cellular oxidative injury. The application of exogenous SA significantly increased chlorophyll and carotenoid contents in plants exposed to excess B (10 mg L−1), in line with the role of SA in alleviating chlorosis caused by B stress. Exogenously applied SA promoted photosynthesis and, consequently, biomass production in watermelon seedlings treated with a high level of B (10 mg L−1) by reducing B accumulation, lipid peroxidation, and the generation of H2O2, while significantly increasing levels of the most reactive ROS, OH−. SA also activated antioxidant enzymes, such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and protected the seedlings from an ROS induced cellular burst. In conclusion, SA can be used to alleviate the adverse effects of excess boron.

Abstract:To assess the potential role of salicylic acid (SA) in plants under cadmium (Cd) stress, a study was conducted on three different oilseed rape (Brassica napus) genotypes. Gas exchange parameters, photosynthetic pigments, antioxidant enzymes activities, mineral nutrients concentration, and ultrastructural analysis were carried out for assessment. Interestingly, cadmium treatment reduced gas exchange parameters, photosynthetic pigments, mineral elements [calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and iron] and the activity of catalase (CAT) enzyme. Whereas, a pronounced increase was observed in malondialdehyde content and antioxidant enzymes, cadmium and zinc accumulation. Impressively, SA played its role as an alleviatory agent by reducing the damage to all parameters caused by Cd except internal CO2 concentration which was further decreased by SA. Even more, Cd and SA showed synergistic effects by increasing superoxide dismutase, peroxidases, ascorbate peroxidase, guaiacol peroxidase, glutathione reductase and decreasing CAT. Apart from affecting the enzyme activities of oilseed rape, both Cd and SA had the same inhibitory effects on Ca and Mg concentrations. Damage caused by Cd to chloroplast and other internal organelles were almost rectified by SA. Effective role of SA, in alleviating Cd toxicity, could be attributed to the SA-induced improvement of photosynthetic activities, enhancement of antioxidant enzymes activities, reduction in lipid peroxidation and Cd uptake. These findings reflect the possible role of SA as a potential inhibitor of cadmium toxicity by strengthening the internal immunity in oilseed rape.
Alleviation of salt stress in lemongrass by salicylic acid

Abstract:Soil salinity is one of the key factors adversely affecting the growth, yield, and quality of crops. A pot study was conducted to find out whether exogenous application of salicylic acid could ameliorate the adverse effect of salinity in lemongrass (Cymbopogon flexuosus Steud. Wats.). Two Cymbopogon varieties, Krishna and Neema, were used in the study. Three salinity levels, viz, 50, 100, and 150 mM of NaCl, were applied to 30-day-old plants. Salicylic acid (SA) was applied as foliar spray at 10−5 M concentration. Totally, six SA-sprays were carried out at 10-day intervals, following the first spray at 30 days after sowing. The growth parameters were progressively reduced with the increase in salinity level; however, growth inhibition was significantly reduced by the foliar application of SA. With the increase in salt stress, a gradual decrease in the activities of carbonic anhydrase and nitrate reductase was observed in both the varieties. SA-treatment not only ameliorated the adverse effects of NaCl but also showed a significant improvement in the activities of these enzymes compared with the untreated stressed-plants. The plants supplemented with NaCl exhibited a significant increase in electrolyte leakage, proline content, and phosphoenol pyruvate carboxylase activity. Content and yield of essential oil was also significantly decreased in plants that received salinity levels; however, SA overcame the unfavorable effects of salinity stress to a considerable extent. Lemongrass variety Krishna was found to be more adapted to salt stress than Neema, as indicated by the overall performance of the two varieties under salt conditions.

Abstract:Lead (Pb) toxicity causes a severe impact on plant growth and productivity. A protective role of salicylic acid (SA) is well known under different abiotic stress conditions. However, very little is known about the SA-induced Pb resistance mechanism. In this study, we investigated the effect of SA on mustard plants (Brassica campestris L.) under Pb-stress conditions. Plants were exposed to three levels of Pb amendment to the soil (0.25, 0.50, 1.00 mM), with or without SA (0.25 mM). Plant growth, yield attributes, and yield at harvest were reduced depending on the severity of the Pb stress. Exogenous application of SA improved plant growth and yield. Biochemical data revealed that Pb toxicity resulted in higher oxidative damage by reducing nonenzymatic antioxidants such as ascorbate and glutathione at the higher dose of Pb treatment. Antioxidant enzymes (ascorbate peroxidase – APX, monodehydroascorbate reductase – MDHAR, dehydroascorbate reductase – DHAR, glutathione reductase – GR, guaiacol peroxidase – POD, glutathione S-transferase – GST, and catalase – CAT) responses varied with the Pb doses. Both the nonenzymatic and enzymatic components of the antioxidant defense system were upregulated after application of SA, resulting in lower oxidative damage under Pb-stress conditions. Taken together, the results suggest that exogenous application of the SA mitigates Pb-induced oxidative damage and consequently results in better growth and yield in mustard plants.

Abstract:Salicylic acid (SA) is a plant growth regulator known to take part in defense responses against different types of stresses, including salt stress. In this study, the role of foliar applied SA in improving the growth of berseem variety 'Anmol' under salt stress was examined. Plants were sown in plastic pots in the sand. Plants were treated with different concentrations of salinity (0, 60 mM and 120 mM NaCl) and salicylic acid (0, 100 mg L-1 and 150 mg L-1) was applied as a foliar spray. Salinity stress significantly reduced root and shoot fresh and dry weight, root and shoot length, photosynthetic pigments including Chl. a, b, a/b, total soluble proteins, total amino acids and uptake of K+ and Ca2+ ions in root and shoot tissues. Exogenous application of salicylic acid improved growth traits including shoot length, shoot fresh weight, root length, root fresh and weight, shoot dry weight, pigments contents (Chl. a, a/b and carotenoids). Total soluble protein and amino acid contents, activities of antioxidants peroxidase (POD), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) were also enhanced by the foliar spray of SA under saline and non-saline conditions. SA played a crucial role in lowering Na+ and Cl− ions content in shoot and root tissues while enhancing the uptake of K+ and Ca2+ ions. The study revealed that 100 mg L-1 SA treatment significantly influenced several plant parameters, including shoot length (8 cm), root length 6.7 cm, chlorophyll (1.2 mg/g FW), total soluble proteins (0.8 mg/g FW) and total amino acids (2.5 mg/g FW), SOD (1.22 U/mg protein), CAT (1.75 U/mg FW), potassium ions (29 mg/g DW), and calcium ions (43 mg/g DW) during salinity stress. Therefore, field use of SA (100 mg L-1) is recommended to enhance the growth of berseem and other fodder crops in saline soils.

Exogenously-Sourced Salicylic Acid Imparts Resilience towards Arsenic Stress by Modulating Photosynthesis, Antioxidant Potential and Arsenic Sequestration in Brassica napus Plants

Abstract:In the current study, salicylic acid (SA) assesses the physiological and biochemical responses in overcoming the potential deleterious impacts of arsenic (As) on Brassica napus cultivar Neelam. The toxicity caused by As significantly reduced the observed growth and photosynthetic attributes and accelerated the reactive oxygen species (ROS). Plants subjected to As stress revealed a significant (p ≤ 0.05) reduction in the plant growth and photosynthetic parameters, which accounts for decreased carbon (C) and sulfur (S) assimilation. Foliar spray of SA lowered the oxidative burden in terms of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), superoxide anion (O2•-), and lipid peroxidation in As-affected plants. Application of SA in two levels (250 and 500 mM) protected the Brassica napus cultivar from As stress by enhancing the antioxidant capacity of the plant by lowering oxidative stress. Among the two doses, 500 mM SA was most effective in mitigating the adverse effects of As on the Brassica napus cultivar. It was found that SA application to the Brassica napus cultivar alleviated the stress by lowering the accumulation of As in roots and leaves due to the participation of metal chelators like phytochelatins, enhancing the S-assimilatory pathway, carbohydrate metabolism, higher cell viability in roots, activity of ribulose 1, 5-bisphosphate carboxylase (Rubisco), and proline metabolism through the active participation of γ-glutamyl kinase (GK) and proline oxidase (PROX) enzyme. The current study shows that SA has the capability to enhance the growth and productivity of B. napus plants cultivated in agricultural soil polluted with As and perhaps other heavy metals.
Responses of salicylic acid encapsulation on growth, photosynthetic attributes and ROS scavenging system in Lactuca sativa exposed to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon pollution

Abstract:Salicylic acid (SA) is a phytohormone that plays a key role in the regulation of the defense response against environmental variables in plants, and it provides increased yield and stress tolerance when exogenously applied to plants as a growth regulator. The role of SA-mediated signals in abiotic stress tolerance varies according to the species, stressor, application method, and dose. This study investigated the effects of salicylic acid (SA, 0.1 mg ml-1) or β-cyclodextrin encapsulated salicylic acid (e-SA, 0.1 mg ml-1) treatments on growth parameters, gas exchange, photosynthesis efficiency, and antioxidant capacity in lettuce seedlings exposed to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon pollution. Fluorene (FLN, 100 mg L-1) contamination resulted in a 27% growth rate and a 14% water content reduction in lettuce leaves. Significant suppressions of stomatal conductance, carbon assimilation, and PSII photochemistry were detected in plants under stress. FLN + SA and FLN + e-SA treatments regulated plant-water relations by stimulating proline accumulation and relieving stomatal limitations. As indicated by the high Fv/Fm ratio, photosynthesis efficiency was recovered in FLN + SA and FLN + e-SA group plants. FLN stress caused high oxidative stress in lettuce leaves and increased lipid peroxidation level by 40%. However, especially e-SA application to plants under stress, increased SOD activity by 3-fold and CAT activity by 80% and was successful in preventing H2O2 accumulation and lipid peroxidation. Both SA and e-SA treatments partially activated the AsA-GSH cycle. As a result, direct SA application was effective in mitigating stress-induced physiological limitations with high SA accumulation in the tissues, while encapsulated SA treatment was more effective in regulating photosynthetic and biochemical reactions, alleviating oxidative damage by activating the antioxidant defense, and promoting growth under stress with moderate SA accumulation.
Salicylic Acid and Melatonin Synergy Enhances Boron Toxicity Tolerance via AsA–GSH Cycle and Glyoxalase System Regulation in Fragrant Rice

Abstract:Background: Boron is an essential micronutrient for plant growth and productivity, yet excessive boron leads to toxicity, posing significant challenges for agriculture. Fragrant rice is popular among consumers, but the impact of boron toxicity on qualitative traits of fragrant rice, especially aroma, remains largely unexplored. The individual potentials of melatonin and salicylic acid in reducing boron toxicity are less known, while their synergistic effects and mechanisms in fragrant rice remain unclear. Methods: Thus, this study investigates the combined application of melatonin and salicylic acid on fragrant rice affected by boron toxicity. One-week-old seedlings were subjected to boron (0 and 800 μM) and then treated with melatonin and salicylic acid (0 and 100 μM, for 3 weeks). Results: Boron toxicity significantly impaired photosynthetic pigments, plant growth, and chloroplast integrity while increasing oxidative stress markers such as hydrogen peroxide, malondialdehyde, methylglyoxal, and betaine aldehyde dehydrogenase. Likewise, boron toxicity abridged the precursors involved in the 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline (2-AP) biosynthesis pathway. However, individual as well as combined application of melatonin and salicylic acid ameliorated boron toxicity by strengthening the antioxidant defense mechanisms—including the enzymes involved during the ascorbate–glutathione (AsA–GSH) cycle and glyoxalase system—and substantially improved 2-AP precursors including proline, P5C, Δ1-pyrroline, and GABA levels, thereby restoring the 2-AP content and aroma. These findings deduce that melatonin and salicylic acid synergistically alleviate boron toxicity-induced disruptions on the 2-AP biosynthesis pathway by improving the 2-AP precursors and enzymatic activities, as well as modulating the physio-biochemical processes and antioxidant defense system of fragrant rice plants. Conclusions: The findings of this study have the potential to enhance rice productivity and stress tolerance, offering solutions to improve food security and sustainability in agricultural practices, particularly in regions affected by environmental stressors.

Salicylic acid-mediated alleviation of salt stress: Insights from physiological and transcriptomic analysis in Asarum sieboldii Miq

Abstract:As global agriculture faces the pressing threat of salt stress, innovative solutions are imperative for sustainable agriculture. The remarkable potential of salicylic acid (SA) in enhancing plant resilience against environmental stressors has recently gained attention. However, the specific molecular mechanisms by which SA mitigates salt stress in Asarum sieboldii Miq., a valuable medicinal plant, remain poorly understood. Here, we evaluated the physiological and transcriptomic regulatory responses of A. sieboldii under salt stress (100 mM NaCl), both in the presence (1 mM SA) and absence of exogenous SA. The results highlighted that SA significantly alleviates salt stress, primarily through enhancing antioxidant activities as evidenced by increased superoxide dismutase, and peroxidase activities. Additionally, we observed an increment in chlorophyll (a and b), proline, total soluble sugar, and plant fresh weight, along with a decrease in malondialdehyde contents. Transcriptome analysis suggested consistency in the regulation of many differentially expressed genes and transcription factors (TFs); however, genes targets (GSTs, TIR1, and NPR1), and TFs (MYB, WRKY, TCP, and bHLH) possessed expressional uniqueness, and majority had significantly up-regulated trends in SA-coupled salt stress treatments. Further, bioinformatics and KEGG enrichment analysis indicated several SA-induced significantly enriched biological pathways. Specifically, plant hormone signal transduction was identified as being populated with key genes distinctive to auxin, cytokinin, ethylene, and salicylic acid signaling, suggesting their important role in salt stress alleviation. Inclusively, this report presents a comprehensive analysis encompassing gene targets, TFs, and biological pathways, and these insights may offer a valuable contribution to our knowledge of SA-mediated regulation and its crucial role in enhancing plant defense against diverse abiotic stressors.

Abstract:Purpose : This study thoroughly investigates innovative amendment salicylic acid (SA) modified rice husk biochar (SABC) designed to improve boron (B) and salinity tolerance in lettuce, providing a comprehensive exploration of their potential effects in alleviating stress-induced challenges. Methods : Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy were used for the molecular and chemical characterization of the biochar samples. The treatments consisted of control, 40 mM NaCl plus 20 mg B kg -1 (NaCl + B), and 40 mM NaCl plus 20 mg B kg -1 and 5 g kg -1 SA-modified rice husk biochar (NaCl + B + SABC). Results : Under conditions of salt and B toxicity, SABC treatment significantly prevented the decrease in plant weight induced by stress. SABC reduced the concentrations of B, sodium (Na), and chloride (Cl) in plants, while increasing the concentrations of potassium (K) and silicon (Si). The hydrogen peroxide concentration, which increased as a result of B and salt toxicity, was decreased with SABC. The activities of the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) showed a significant increase under stress, but due to the positive effect of SABC in reducing B and salt stress, there was a decrease in the activities of these enzymes. Conclusions : The results obtained from this study indicate that SABC is effective in reducing boron and salt stress. Testing the SABC molecule in different plants and under various stress conditions could provide significant contributions to the stress literature.

Abstract:Horticultural crops are greatly disturbed by severe abiotic stress conditions. This is considered one of the major threats to the healthy lives of the human population. Salicylic acid (SA) is famous as one of the multifunctional phytohormones that are widely found in plants. It is also an important bio-stimulator involved in the regulation of growth and the developmental stages of horticultural crops. The productivity of horticultural crops has been improved with the supplemental use of even small amounts of SA. It has good capability to reduce oxidative injuries that occur from the over-production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), potentially elevated photosynthesis, chlorophyll pigments, and stomatal regulation. Physiological and biochemical processes have revealed that SA enhances signaling molecules, enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants, osmolytes, and secondary metabolites activities within the cell compartments of plants. Numerous genomic approaches have also explored that SA regulates transcriptions profiling, transcriptional apprehensions, genomic expression, and metabolism of stress-related genes. Many plant biologists have been working on SA and its functioning in plants; however, its involvement in the enhancement of tolerance against abiotic stress in horticultural crops is still unidentified and needs more attention. Therefore, the current review is focused on a detailed exploration of SA in physiological and biochemical processes in horticultural crops subjected to abiotic stress. The current information is comprehensive and aims to be more supportive of the development of higher-yielding germplasm against abiotic stress.

Abstract:Salicylic acid (SA) is a very simple phenolic compound (a C7H6O3 compound composed of an aromatic ring, one carboxylic and a hydroxyl group) and this simplicity contrasts with its high versatility and the involvement of SA in several plant processes either in optimal conditions or in plants facing environmental cues, including heavy metal (HM) stress. Nowadays, a huge body of evidence has unveiled that SA plays a pivotal role as plant growth regulator and influences intra- and inter-plant communication attributable to its methyl ester form, methyl salicylate, which is highly volatile. Under stress, including HM stress, SA interacts with other plant hormones (e.g., auxins, abscisic acid, gibberellin) and promotes the stimulation of antioxidant compounds and enzymes thereby alerting HM-treated plants and helping in counteracting HM stress. The present literature survey reviews recent literature concerning the roles of SA in plants suffering from HM stress with the aim of providing a comprehensive picture about SA and HM, in order to orientate the direction of future research on this topic.

Effect of exogenous salicylic acid on manganese toxicity, mineral nutrients translocation and antioxidative system in polish wheat (Triticum polonicum L.)

Abstract:The present study investigated the morphological and physiological effect of salicylic acid (SA) on manganese toxicity in dwarf polish wheat (Triticum polonicum L.) seedlings grown hydroponically. Our findings showed that Mn stress could decrease plant growth, cause serious chlorosis and injury the photosynthetic apparatus. An increase of Mn accumulation and the inhibition of the K and Ca absorption and the Mg, Fe and Zn translocation were observed under Mn stress. Also, there was a considerable increase in H2O2 and TBARS (thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances) content in both the roots and leaves under Mn condition. The combination of SA and Mn treatment decreased the transport of Mn, Fe and Zn from roots to shoots and increased the Ca absorption and Mg translocation. In antioxidant system, such as CAT, APX, GR, DHAR, GSH and AsA, the combined treatment significantly increased the antioxidant content and antioxidative enzyme activities compared to the Mn stress alone. The level of ROS and lipid peroxidation significantly decreased under the combination of SA and Mn. These results suggested that SA-induced Mn tolerances in polish wheat are mainly by inhibiting Mn translocation, enhancing enzymatic activities and nonenzymatic antioxidants contents, and regulating nutrient absorption and distribution in plants.

Improving arsenic toxicity tolerance in mung bean [Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek] by salicylic acid application

Abstract:Arsenic (As) is a widespread toxic heavy metal which lowers plant growth and development. Salicylic acid (SA) is a prominent signaling molecule in plants and is involved in response to environmental stresses. In this study, the possible role of SA in alleviating As toxicity was investigated on mung bean. Seeds after treatment with SA (0, 0.25, 0.5 and 1 mM) were sown in pots and were exposed to As stress (0 or 50 mg kg− 1 soil). It was found that As toxicity markedly lowered chlorophyll value, relative water content (RWC), shoot length, shoot and root biomass, leaf area and seed yield, whereas it enhanced As accumulation in roots, shoots and seeds, malondialdehyde (MDA) and proline contents and also activities of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and glutathione reductase (GR). Nonetheless, pre-sowing of seeds in SA (especially 1 mM) significantly reduced As contents in roots, shoots, and seeds, but further increased proline content and antioxidant enzyme activities, led to decreased MDA content. In SA-treated plants, also chlorophyll value, RWC, shoot length, shoot and root biomass, leaf area and seed yield were enhanced under As toxicity conditions. These results suggest that exogenous application of SA could improve As toxicity tolerance in mung bean plants through reducing As uptake and accumulation in different plant parts, enhancing activities of antioxidant enzymes and proline content, a decline of lipid peroxidation, improving chlorophyll value and plant water status.
Effect of salicylic acid foliar application on growth, glandular hairs and essential oil yield in Salvia officinalis L. grown under zinc stress

Abstract:Abstract Background Generally, zinc (Zn) is an essential element and acts as a plant nutrient, but at higher concentrations, it is toxic. Higher uptake and translocation of Zn into plant tissues can cause serious physiological and biochemical alterations. However, salicylic acid (SA) is an endogenous regulator of growth and signaling molecule responsible for inducing environmental stress tolerance in plants. Therefore, spray application of SA could provide protection against several types of stresses such as Zn toxicity. In this context, the ameliorative effect of SA (0.5 and 1 mM) on Salvia officinalis L. under Zn stress (40 mM) was studied. Results Zn stress decreased growth, chlorophyll content, essential oil yield and peltate glandular trichome density. This toxicity can be linked to a strong accumulation of Zn in the various parts of the plant. In addition, Zn stress disturbed nutrients assimilation (K, P and Ca). However, spray of SA, particularly at 0.5 mM improved all parameters studied under both Zn and normal conditions. The positive effects of SA under Zn stress condition may be due to the decrease of Zn accumulation in different parts of the plant. This decrease was accompanied by an increase in K, P and Ca content. In addition, the histological study of S. officinalis leaves showed the presence of two types of glandular hairs, the peltate and capitate glands. In the leaves of stressed plants, we noticed the presence of glands with deformations in the form of pockets in the number of one or more as well as the glands with an oval form. On the other hand, all these abnormalities glands were not detected in stressed plants that were sprayed with SA. Therefore, the absence of these anomalies under the effect of SA showed the remedial effect of this growth regulator. Conclusion The findings of the present work suggest that spraying SA maybe useful for improving the plant growth in Zn-contaminated areas.

Abstract:Salicylic acid (SA) is a well-known signaling molecule and phenolic plant hormone. However, the optimal concentration of SA required for beneficial effects may vary across different plant species. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of salicylic acid (SA) on two different varieties of Abelmoschus esculentus (Sakata-713 and Neelam) in order to determine the optimal concentration of SA and its impact on the growth, physiology, and biochemical processes of the plants. We conducted an experiment applying different SA concentrations (0, 10-4, 10-5, 10-6, 10-7 M) at 25 days after sowing (DAS) and evaluated various plant parameters at different stages. To evaluate various parameters sampling was performed at 30 and 45 DAS; yield traits were calculated at 60 DAS. The results indicate that SA application increased cell division, trichome number, chlorophyll content, photosynthesis, gas exchange traits, and elemental status which further boosted plants growth and yield traits. SA application stimulated activity of several enzymes that participate in carboxylation/decarboxylation homeostasis (carbonic anhydrase), nitrogen metabolism (nitrate reductase), Calvin cycle (Rubisco), TCA cycle (succinate dehydrogenase and fumarase) and secondary metabolism (phenylalanine lyase). A gradual increase in the production of secondary metabolites (total phenol, total flavonoid, anthocyanin) and carbon metabolism (total reducing sugars, starch, glucose, fructose, sucrose) was observed. Notably, SA treatment also played a vital role in maintaining a balanced equilibrium between reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the scavenging system (catalase, peroxidase, superoxide dismutase). Based on our results, the optimal concentration of SA was determined to be 10-5 M, as it yielded the most favourable outcomes among the different concentrations tested. Moreover, when comparing the two varieties of okra, Sakata-713 exhibited a more promising response to SA treatment compared to Neelam.
