Abstract:In this study, three mesoporous-activated crab shell biochars were prepared by carbonation and chemical activation with KOH (K−CSB), H3PO4 (P−CSB), and KMnO4 (M−CSB) to evaluate their tetracycline (TC) adsorption capacities. Characterization by SEM and a porosity analysis revealed that the K−CSB, P−CSB, and M−CSB possessed a puffy, mesoporous structure, with K−CSB exhibiting a larger specific surface area (1738 m2/g). FT-IR analysis revealed that abundant, surface ox-containing functional groups possessed by K−CSB, P−CSB, and M−CSB, such as −OH, C−O, and C=O, enhanced adsorption for TC, thereby enhancing their adsorption efficiency for TC. The maximum TC adsorption capacities of the K−CSB, P−CSB, and M−CSB were 380.92, 331.53, and 281.38 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption isotherms and kinetics data of the three TC adsorbents fit the Langmuir and pseudo-second-order model. The adsorption mechanism involved aperture filling, hydrogen bonding, electrostatic action, π-π EDA action, and complexation. As a low-cost and highly effective adsorbent for antibiotic wastewater treatment, activated crab shell biochar has enormous application potential.

Porous biochar derived from walnut shell as an efficient adsorbent for tetracycline removal

Abstract:In this study, a high-performance porous adsorbent was prepared from biochar through a simple one-step alkali-activated pyrolysis treatment of walnut shells, and it was effective in removing tetracycline (TC). The specific surface area (SSA) of potassium hydroxide-pretreated walnut shell-derived biochar pyrolyzed at 900°C (KWS900) increased remarkably compared to that of the pristine walnut shell and reached 1713.87±37.05 m 2 ·g −1 . The maximum adsorption capacity of KWS900 toward TC was 607.00±31.87 mg·g −1 . The pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models were well suited to describe the TC adsorption process onto KWS900. The KWS900 exhibited high stability and reusability for TC adsorption in the presence of co-existing anions or cations over a wide pH range of 1.0–11.0. Further investigations demonstrated that the proposed adsorption mechanism involved pore filling, hydrogen bonding, π–π stacking, and electrostatic interaction. These findings provide a valuable reference for developing biochar-based adsorbents for pollutant removal.

Hierarchical Porous Biochar Prepared from Peanut Shell Through Minerals Modification for Highly Efficient Tetracycline Removal

Abstract:Comparison of different mineral element modifications on biochars has been rarely investigated, and their adsorption behavior toward pollutants is also less compared. In this study, typical mineral elements referring to Ca, Mg, and Al were employed to modify pristine biochars (PSBC). The effect of minerals modification on the properties of biochars was investigated, and their adsorption performance toward tetracycline (TC) was compared. The results showed that minerals modification markedly raised the surface area of biochars, formed a hierarchical porous structure, and introduced more functional groups. The maximum adsorption capacity exhibited the following order: Ca-PSBC > Al-PSBC > Mg-PSBC > PSBC. The highest adsorption capacity of Ca-PSBC toward TC was 79.65 mg·g −1 , which was ascribed to the interaction of pore filling, π-π interaction, surface complexation, hydrogen bond, and electrostatic interactions. The two-compartment model and Elovich's kinetic model better describe the adsorption process. The Langmuir and Temkin models better fitted the TC adsorption process on PSBC and Ca-PSBC, whereas the Freundlich model better reflected the TC adsorption process on Mg-PSBC and Al-PSBC. Minerals modification strengthened the interaction of pore filling, surface complexation, and hydrogen bonding. Therefore, minerals modification was considered a promising strategy to improve the adsorption performance of biochar toward TC, especially Ca modification, owing to its strengthening the interaction of pore filling and surface complexation and exhibiting practical application potential.

Enhanced Biochar Stabilities and Adsorption Properties for Tetracycline by Synthesizing Silica-Composited Biochar.

Abstract:The silica-composited biochars (SBC) were synthesized by adding silica particulates into bamboo biomass during pyrolysis at 700 °C to examine the effect of silica addition on biochar stabilities and adsorption properties for tetracycline (TC). Silica addition increased the total pore volume and average pore diameter of biochar due to the abundant mesopores in SBC, but decreased specific surface area due to the blockage of biochar pore with silica particles. Biochar stability was obviously enhanced with silica addition due to the decreased atomic ratio of H/C and O/C, the reduced C loss amount after chemical oxidation treatment, and the increased thermal stability. The adsorption capacities of SBC for TC were greatly enhanced with silica addition and increased with the increasing silica addition amount, which can be attributed to the facilitating effect of π-π electron donor acceptor (EDA) interaction and pore-filling effect. In addition, silica addition can also effectively enhance the oxidation resistance of biochar for TC adsorption, since the decreased degree (δ) of TC adsorption amounts on the biochars after chemical oxidation decreased with the increasing silica addition level. The observed positive correlations between δ values and the corresponding C loss amount of biochars after chemical oxidation suggested that the high carbon stability was favorable for the maintenance of biochar adsorption capacity. These results can provide a new way to improve biochar stabilities, aging resistance, and adsorption properties for organic pollutants.
Zirconium-modified biochar as the efficient adsorbent for low-concentration phosphate: performance and mechanism

Abstract:Achieving advanced treatment of phosphorus (P) to prevent water eutrophication and meet increasingly stringent wastewater discharge standard is an important goal of water management. In this study, a low-cost, high-efficiency phosphate adsorbent zirconium-modified biochar (ZrBC) was successfully synthesized through co-precipitation method, in which the biochar was prepared from the pyrolysis of peanut shell powder. ZrBC exhibited strong adsorption ability to low-concentration phosphate (< 1 mg·L −1 ) in water, and the phosphate removal reached 100% at the investigated dosage range (0.1–1.0 mg·L −1 ). The adsorption process could be described well by pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir isotherm model, indicating that the phosphate adsorption by ZrBC was mainly a chemical adsorption and single-layer adsorption process. The calculated static maximum phosphate adsorption capacity was 58.93 mg·g −1 at 25 °C. The ligand exchange between surface hydroxyl groups and phosphate was the main mechanism for the phosphate adsorption on ZrBC. The presence of coexisting anions except for SO 4 2− had little effect on the phosphate removal. At the column experiment, ZrBC showed superior treatment capacities for simulated secondary effluents and the breakthrough time for 0.5 mg·L −1 effluent phosphate concentration reached 190 h. ZrBC highlights the potential as an effective and environment-friendly adsorbent for the removal of low-concentration phosphate from secondary effluents of municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs).
Sustainable use of Ca(OH)2 modified biochar for phosphorus recovery and tetracycline removal from water

Abstract:To prevent possible secondary pollution from phosphorus-loaded biochar (BC) in agricultural systems, this study investigated the sustainable use of Ca(OH)2 modified wood biochars (Ca-BCs) for P recovery while significantly lowering the tetracycline (TC) adsorption onto Ca-BCs. Ca-BCs were prepared via calcination of mixtures of Ca(OH)2 and wood BC under 100-500 °C for removing P and TC from water. Compared to the pristine BC (without Ca(OH)2 modification), Ca-BC100 (Ca-BC prepared at 100 °C) showed a significant increase of P adsorption capacity from 4.00 to 138.70 mg/g due to reactive interaction between P and Ca(OH)2 on Ca-BC while decrease of TC adsorption capacity from 62.17 to 20.86 mg/g owing to decrease of surface area from 260.50 to 120.26 m2/g. Batch adsorption tests implied that the P adsorption on Ca-BC100 would occur mainly via electrostatic attraction (pH > 2.1) and formation of hydroxylapatite (Ca5(PO4)3(OH)) between phosphate and Ca(OH)2. In addition, Ca-BC100 reacted with TC via electrostatic attraction (pH > 7.6), complexation, hydrogen bond, and π-π interactions. P and TC adsorption onto Ca-BC100 was a chemical, endothermic, and spontaneous process. The dynamic adsorption experiments using a fixed bed column filled with Ca-BC100 indicated that Ca-BC100 could continuously and effectively remove P and TC from water. Ca-BC100 also effectively lowered P and COD in the dairy wastewater. Under the environmentally relevant conditions, continuous treatment of water containing P and TC using the pristine BC followed by Ca-BC100 showed the pristine BC removed 96% of TC and only 6% of P from water while Ca-BC100 made high recovery of P (94% of P) with negligible TC. Therefore, Ca-BC100 could be used for effective recovery of P with negligible TC from wastewater, and then applied to agricultural systems as a sustainable and safe P-rich biofertilizer.
Enhanced adsorption capacity of tetracycline on tea waste biochar with KHCO3 activation from aqueous solution

Abstract:Activation is an important pathway that can enhance the adsorption capacity of biochar. In this study, a modified tea waste biochar (MTWBC) was prepared via a two-step pyrolysis approach with KHCO3 activation. Pristine tea waste biochar (TWBC) was also produced as control via one-step pyrolysis without activation. Various characterizations were undertaken to investigate the influence of modification on the morphology, composition, carbon structure, surface area, and functional group of biochar, including scanning electron microscope (SEM), surface area and pore analyzer, element analysis, point of zero charge (pHPZC), X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). After KHCO3 activation treatment, the surface area, total pore volume, and micropore volume of MTWBC reached 1981 m2·g-1, 0.8547 cm3·g-1, and 0.6439 cm3·g-1 which were 7.34-fold, 7.27-fold, and 7.30-fold increases, respectively, compared with TWBC. The aromaticity, hydrophilicity, and polarity of the MTWBC increased after modification. More graphitization with less defective structures occurred in MTWBC after modification. The C-, O-, and N-containing groups in MTWBC also changed after the reaction of KHCO3. The pseudo-second-order and Freundlich models best described the adsorption process on biochar. The maximum adsorption capacity of tetracycline (TC) on MTWBC reached 293.46 mg·g-1, which was 15-fold more than that of TWBC (19.68 mg·g-1). An alkaline environment decreased the TC adsorption on biochars. The presence of Na+, K+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ inhibited TC adsorption onto biochars. The influence of Cu2+ on TC adsorption by biochars depends on its initial concentration. The enhanced adsorption capacity of TC on MTWBC was mainly attributable to the large surface area, the improved pore volume, and more aromatic structure. The adsorption mechanism was based on pore filling and π-π EDA interaction. Therefore, KHCO3 activated biochar has the potential to remove TC from aquatic environments.

Abstract:In this study, to improve the adsorption performance and recovery of biochar in tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) adsorption, a new biochar adsorbent, biochar-ceramsite composites (OBCC), were prepared by one-step synthesis using response surface methodology to optimize the preparation conditions. The error between the predicted adsorption capacity and the actual tested adsorption capacity was only 1.9% for the optimal preparation conditions. The maximum adsorption capacity (obtained by the Langmuir model) of TCH onto OBCC (30.72 mg/g) is 1.5 times that of ceramsite (CS, 20.86 mg/g) and 1.9 times that of the raw biochar (RBC, 16.47 mg/g). The better adsorption performance of OBCC can be mainly attributed to its more mesopores distribution (average pore size is 14.58 nm) and larger surface area (1.4 and 4.8 times higher than that of CS and RBC, respectively). The TCH adsorption mechanism by OBCC involves various interactions and mechanisms, including electrostatic interactions, π-π interactions and hydrogen bonding. OBCC is non-toxic, easy to solid-liquid separation, and can be potentially reused for 22 times before completely losing its activity, exhibiting great potential to antibiotic elimination.

Abstract:Tetracycline (TC) and sugarcane bagasse had both exerted enormous strain on environmental security. In this work, new composite adsorbent designed by impregnating bio-waste bagasse with magnesium-aluminum layered double oxides (BC-MA) was innovatively brought forward for TC removal. Benefiting from the abundant adsorption sites supplied by developed pores structure (0.308 cm 3 ·g -1 ), enlarged surface area (256.8 m 2 ·g -1 ) and reinforced functional groups, the maximum adsorption amount of BC-MA for TC reached 250.6 mg g -1 . Moreover, BC-MA displayed desirable adsorption capacity in diverse water environments coupled with excellent sustainable regeneration ability. The absorption process of TC by BC-MA was spontaneous and endothermic, and the pivotal rate-limiting stage pertained to intraparticle diffusion. The mechanisms proposed here mainly concerned π-π interactions, pore filling, complexation and hydrogen bonding. These findings suggested that the synthesis of modified biochar from bagasse would offer new opportunities for simultaneous waste resource reuse and water pollution control.

Abstract:The effective removal of oxytetracycline hydrochloride (OTC) from the water environment is of great importance. Adsorption as a simple, stable, and cost-effective technology is regarded as an important method for removing OTC. Herein, a low-cost biochar with a developed mesoporous structure was synthesized via pyrolysis of poplar leaf with potassium bicarbonate (KHCO3) as the activator. KHCO3 can endow biochar with abundant mesopores, but excessive KHCO3 cannot continuously promote the formation of mesoporous structures. In comparison with all of the prepared biochars, PKC-4 (biochar with a poplar leaf to KHCO3 mass ratio of 5:4) shows the highest adsorption performance for OTC as it has the largest surface area and richest mesoporous structure. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Freundlich equilibrium model are more consistent with the experimental data, which implies that the adsorption process is multi-mechanism and multi-layered. In addition, the maximum adsorption capacities of biochar are slightly affected by pH changes, different metal ions, and different water matrices. Moreover, the biochar can be regenerated by pyrolysis, and its adsorption capacity only decreases by approximately 6% after four cycles. The adsorption of biochar for OTC is mainly controlled by pore filling, though electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding, and π-π interaction are also involved. This study realizes biomass waste recycling and highlights the potential of poplar leaf-based biochar for the adsorption of antibiotics.

Abstract:In this work, tea waste biochar was prepared and used to activate peroxodisulfate (PDS) for the removal of tetracycline (TC) efficiently. And SEM, XRD, Raman, and FTIR were used to characterize the biochar. The effects of reaction conditions including initial pH, biochar dosage, and PDS concentration on the removal of TC were explored, and the result showed that compared with the biochar prepared at 400 °C and 500 °C, the biochar pyrolyzed at 600 °C (TBC600) had the highest TC removal performance due to its higher sp2 hybrid carbon content, richer defective structure, and stronger electron deliverability. Under the optimal dosage of PDS (4 mM) and TBC600 (0.8 g L−1), the removal efficiency of TC (10 mg L−1) reached 81.65%. After four cycles of TBC600, the removal rate could still reach 75.51%, indicating that TBC600 has excellent stability. In addition, quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) verified that the active oxygen including SO4·−, ·OH, O2·−, and singlet oxygen (1O2) was involved, among which 1O2 and OH were the main active substance in the TC removal. Therefore, this work provided a green and efficient persulfate activator and a method for recycling tea waste.

[Adsorption Properties of Magnetic Phosphorous Camellia Oleifera Shells Biochar to Sulfamethoxazole in Water]

Abstract:Magnetic phosphorous biochar （MPBC） was prepared from Camellia oleifera shells using phosphoric acid activation and iron co-deposition. The materials were characterized and analyzed through scanning electron microscopy （SEM）， X-ray diffractometry （XRD）， specific surface area and pore size analysis （BET）， Fourier infrared spectroscopy （FT-IR）， and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy （XPS）. MPBC had a high surface area （1 139.28 m2·g-1） and abundant surface functional groups， and it could achieve fast solid-liquid separation under the action of an external magnetic field. The adsorption behavior and influencing factors of sulfamethoxazole （SMX） in water were investigated. The adsorbent showed excellent adsorption properties for SMX under acidic and neutral conditions， and alkaline conditions and the presence of CO32- had obvious inhibition on adsorption. The adsorption process conformed to the quasi-second-order kinetics and Langmuir model. The adsorption rate was fast， and the maximum adsorption capacity reached 356.49 mg·g-1. The adsorption process was a spontaneous exothermic reaction， and low temperature was beneficial to the adsorption. The adsorption mechanism was mainly the chemisorption of pyrophosphate surface functional groups （C-O-P bond） between the SMX molecule and MPBC and also included hydrogen bonding， π-π electron donor-acceptor （π-πEDA） interaction， and a pore filling effect. The development of MPBC adsorbent provides an effective way for resource utilization of waste Camellia oleifera shells and treatment of sulfamethoxazole wastewater.
Sustainable efficient utilization of magnetic porous biochar for adsorption of orange G and tetracycline: Inherent roles of adsorption and mechanisms

Abstract:Iron-doped biochar has been widely used as an adsorbent to remove contaminants due to the high adsorption performance, but it still suffers from complicated preparation methods, unstable iron loading, unsatisfactory specific surface area, and uneven distribution of active sites. Here, a novel magnetic porous biochar (FeCS800) with nanostructure on surface was synthesized by one-pot pyrolysis method of corn straw with K2FeO4, and used in orange G (OG) and tetracycline (TC) adsorption. FeCS800 exhibited outstanding adsorption capacities for OG and TC after K2FeO4 activation and the adsorption data were fitted satisfactorily to Langmuir isotherm and Pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The maximum adsorption capacities of FeCS800 for OG and TC were around 303.03 mg/g and 322.58 mg/g, respectively, at 25 °C and pH 7.0, which were 16.27 and 24.61 times higher than that before modification. Thermodynamic studies showed that the adsorption of OG/TC by FeCS800 were thermodynamically favorable and highly spontaneous. And the adsorption capacity of OG and TC by FeCS800 remained 77% and 81% after 5 cycles, respectively, indicating that FeCS800 had good stability. The outstanding adsorption properties and remarkable reusability of FeCS800 show its great potential to be an economic and environmental adsorbent in contaminants removal.
Phosphate adsorption characteristics of CeO2-loaded, Eucommia ulmoides leaf residue biochar

Abstract:In this study, a Ce-loading biochar (Ce-BC) was synthesized by the optimal modification method of pre-pyrolysis impregnation, a pyrolysis temperature at 600 °C, and a CeCl3 concentration of 1.00 mol L-1 for efficient adsorption phosphorus (P) from wastewater. The results revealed that Ce-BC could achieve a maximum P removal rate of 100% under specific conditions: an adsorbent concentration of 2.00 g L-1, an initial solution pH of 3.00, an adsorption temperature of 25 °C, and an initial P concentration of 20.00 mg L-1. The adsorption process followed the quasi-secondary kinetic model, suggesting the Ce-BC was particularly effective in acidic environments. Meanwhile, Ce-BC has a strong resistance to anion interference and good cycling performance (the P adsorption capacity of Ce-BC was 59.77% of its initial value after four cycles). Field emission scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) indicated that Ce-BC contained a porous structure and rich functional groups (hydroxyl and carboxyl), and compounds of CeO2 and MgCeO3 were formed. The Ce loading favored the exchange with P through ligands, inner-sphere complexation, ion exchange, and electrostatic interaction to form inner-sphere complex-cerium P (CePO4), and the surface complex of Ce-O-P replaced O-H. In addition, the Ce-BC adsorption columns substantially affected P removal in actual wastewater. Overall, Ce-BC is a promising material for the treating P-containing acidic wastewater.

Abstract:The pyrolysis temperature strongly affects the properties of the peanut shell biochar, and influences its adsorption behavior and mechanisms for contaminant removal in aqueous solutions. In this study, peanut shells were pyrolyzed at 400 °C and 700 °C to prepare two biochars (PSBC400 and PSBC700), which were then characterized using scanning electron microscopy/X-ray energy spectrum analysis, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller, elemental analysis, X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The adsorption behavior of typical tetracycline (TC) onto the biochars was investigated, and the potential adsorption mechanisms explored. The results show that compared with PSBC400, PSBC700 has a larger specific surface area and pore volume and contains higher levels of carbon and ash, but shows lower O, N, and H content. The hydrophilicity and polarity of PSBC700 is lower, but its aromaticity is higher. Furthermore, the mineral content of PSBC400 is higher than for PSBC700. The functional groups differ between PSBC400 and PSBC700, especially those containing C and O. The Elovich and two-compartment adsorption kinetic models are a good fit to the TC adsorption processes on both biochars, but the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model provides better results. The theoretical maximum adsorption capacities of TC onto PSBC700 and PSBC400 are 33.4346 mg·g−1 and 26.4185 mg·g−1, respectively. The main adsorption mechanisms of TC onto PSBC400 are hydrogen bonding and complexation, and are closely related to the functional groups and minerals found in PSBC400. In contrast, the main adsorption mechanisms of TC onto PSBC700 are pore filling and the π–π interaction, and are mainly determined by the surface area and graphited carbon structure of PSBC700. In summary, effective biochar can be manufactured from peanut shell biomass and can be used to remove TC from aqueous solutions.

Abstract:Tetracycline (TC), a commonly used personal care and veterinary drug, is produced in large-scale, during which high concentrations of wastewater is discharged into environment and difficult to biodegrade. Adsorption is a cost-effective and environment-friendly approach to TC wastewater. In this study, ubiquitous rice husk biochar was modified by methanol to improve TC adsorption capacities and reduce the inherent organic compound content in the biochar. The modified biochar showed approximately 45.6% enhancement of adsorption capacity in 12 h and 17.2% in equilibrium time compared with On-char. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy suggested that the main factor responsible for the enhancement of TC adsorption is the change in O-containing groups in the modified biochar, which affects pi-pi electron-donor-acceptor interactions between the biochar and TC. The fixed bed experiment show that the effective filtration volume of MeOH-char is 1059 bed volumes, which is approximately 2-fold of that of On-char. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Excessive phosphate and tetracycline (TC) contaminants pose a serious risk to human health and the ecological environment. As such exploring the simultaneous adsorption of phosphate and TC is garnering increasing attention. In this study, an efficient lanthanum ferrate magnetic biochar (FLBC) was synthesised from crab shells using an ultrasound-assisted sol-gel method to study its performance and mechanisms for phosphate and TC adsorption in aqueous solutions in mono/bis systems. According to the Langmuir model, the developed exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity of 65.62 mg/g for phosphate and 234.1 mg/g for TC (pH:7.0 ± 0.1, and 25 °C). Further, it exhibited high resistance to interference and pH suitability. In practical swine wastewater applications, whereby the concentrations of phosphate and TC are 37 and 19.97 mg/L, respectively, the proposed material demonstrated excellent performance. In addition, electrostatic adsorption, chemical precipitation and ligand exchange were noted to be the main mechanisms for phosphate adsorption by FLBC, whereas hydrogen bonding and π-π interaction were the main adsorption mechanisms for TC adsorption. Therefore, this study successfully prepared a novel and efficient adsorbent for phosphate and TC.

Abstract:Tetracycline (TC) is widely used in the aquaculture and healthcare industries. However, massive TC is discharged into the surrounding aquatic environment through prodrugs or parent compounds, as neither humans nor animals can metabolize it directly. TC contamination of water has become a significant worldwide environmental challenge. In this study, a novel biochar RK1.2BC was generated by rapeseed residue co-pyrolyzed with KHCO3. Adsorption experiments and characterization techniques were performed to examine the performance and mechanisms of RK1.2BC in removing TC from wastewater. These findings demonstrated that RK1.2BC is an effective material for TC removal. At 298.15 K and pH 6.0, the maximal capacity of RK1.2BC for TC adsorption in theory was 783.82 mg·g−1, approximately 12.37-fold greater than nonactivated biochar. The specific surface area (1570.28 m2·g−1) and the total volume of pores (0.94 m3·g−1) of RK1.2BC increased 360-fold and 94-fold, respectively. RK1.2BC maintained high adsorption capacity across a broad range of water pH (2.0–11.0). The RK1.2BC is highly resistant to ionic interference, TC adsorption capacity was >450.96 mg·g−1 at 100 mg·L−1 of anions (SO42−, NO3−, PO43−, HCO3−, CO32−), cations (Na+, Ca2+, K+, Mg2+, Cd2+), and natural organic matter (Humic Acid and Citric Acid). RK1.2BC demonstrated excellent TC adsorption in natural water (>402.38 mg·g−1) and retained a strong ability to adsorb (>243.08 mg·g−1) following five rounds of desorption-regeneration. Furthermore, TC adsorption process was governed primarily by homogeneous monolayer chemisorption, the adsorption mechanism involves π-π EDA interactions, hydrophobic interactions, electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding, and pore filling.

Abstract:The template method is an effective means to improve the specific surface area and porosity of biochar, but the synthesis of template agents and the way they are integrated with biomass materials still need further development. Therefore, the free Pseudomonas sp. Y1 was used to synthesize calcium-precipitated nanoparticles (CPN) on sludge as a fused template skeleton to enlarge the surface area of sludge biochar facilitating the adsorption of tetracycline (TC) in this work. The modified biochar (FBC) showed excellent specific surface area (448.55 m 2 g −1 ) and porosity (0.0053 cm3 g −1 ), stable morphological structure, abundant active functional groups, and appreciable adsorption capacity (65.43 mg g −1 ) based on several characterization and adsorption experiments. Moreover, the adsorption model postulated that the removal of TC is mainly a chemisorption-based heat-trapping, disordered multilayer interaction. In detail, this process involved the joint contribution from electrostatic interactions, ligand exchange, hydrogen bonding, π-π bonding, complexation, and pore filling. Meanwhile, the adaptability and stability of FBC were examined by pH and coexisting substances. This template skeleton induced by microorganisms can provide new insight into the modification of biochar with the template method.

Abstract:Widespread environmental pollution caused by the misuse of tetracyclines (TCs) has become a global issue, necessitating the development of water treatment materials for antibiotic removal. Magnetic biochar (MBC) possesses several advantages, including a wide range of raw material sources and low cost, making it a potential adsorbent that overcomes the limitations of biochar (BC) regarding solid-liquid separation. In this study, peanut shell-derived magnetic biochar loaded with Fe3O4 (Fe3O4/BC) was prepared to study its adsorption performance and environmental factors for TCs. The adsorption mechanism was revealed using adsorption isotherms, adsorption kinetics and thermodynamics. The results showed that the total pore volume was increased, and surface oxygen-containing functional groups were formed of that before BC modification. In a wide pH range, Fe3O4/BC showed high adsorption performance for TCs, with an adsorption rate of over 85%. Chemical adsorption was the main adsorption mechanism, including hydrogen bonding, as well as π-π interactions, electrostatic interactions, intrapore diffusion and hydrophobic interactions. Moreover, reusability and obtaining cost of the material were analyzed, demonstrating its promising application prospects. This study will promote the application of Fe3O4/BC in the removal of antibiotics pollutants from water.
