Abstract:Leaf axil patterning occurs concomitantly with leaf development and takes place at the boundary zone which demarcates the initiating leaf primordium from the shoot apical meristem. Subsequent growth and differentiation result in establishment of the axillary meristem and abscission zone (AZ) along the proximal-distal axis of the leaf axil, yet the molecular mechanisms that regulate these events are poorly understood. We studied the role of the tomato BLADE ON PETIOLE (SlBOP) boundary gene family on the development of the leaf axil using BOP-silenced plants as well as BOP-mutated lines. We show that silencing of the tomato SlBOP gene family affects patterning of the leaf axil along the proximal-distal axis, manifested by dispositioning of the AM and abnormal development of the adjacent tissue resulting in lack of a functional leaf AZ. Dissection of the role of each of the three tomato SlBOPs by analysis of single, double and triple null-mutants demonstrated that SlBOP2 is the dominant gene in leaf axil patterning, but does not rule out involvement of SlBOP1 and SlBOP3 in correct AM positioning. We further studied the potential role of TERMINATING FLOWER (TMF), a transcription factor which was previously shown to interact with SlBOPs, in leaf axil patterning using TMF mutant tomato lines. The results suggest that similar to SlBOP2, TMF is involved in leaf axil proximal-distal patterning and AZ development.
The WOX Family Transcriptional Regulator SlLAM1 Controls Compound Leaf and Floral Organ Development Insolanum Lycopersicum

Abstract:Plant-specific WOX family transcription factors play important roles ranging from embryogenesis to lateral organ development. The WOX1 transcription factors, which belong to the modern clade of the WOX family, are known to regulate outgrowth of the leaf blade specifically in the mediolateral axis; however, the role of WOX1 in compound leaf development remains unknown. Phylogenetic analysis of the whole WOX family in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) indicates that there are 10 members that represent the modern, intermediate, and ancient clades. Using phylogenetic analysis and a reverse genetic approach, in this study we identified SlLAM1 in the modern clade and examined its function and tissue-specific expression pattern. We found that knocking out SlLAM1 via CRISPR/Cas9-mediated genome editing led to narrow leaves and a reduced number of secondary leaflets. Overexpression of tomato SlLAM1 could rescue the defects of the tobacco lam1 mutant. Anatomical and transcriptomic analyses demonstrated that floral organ development, fruit size, secondary leaflet initiation, and leaf complexity were altered due to loss-of-function of SlLAM1. These findings demonstrate that tomato SlLAM1 plays an important role in the regulation of secondary leaflet initiation, in addition to its conserved function in blade expansion.
Transcriptome Analysis of Tomato (solanum Lycopersicum L.) Shoots Reveals a Crosstalk Between Auxin and Strigolactone

Abstract:Auxin and strigolactone (SL) are two important phytohormones involved in shoot branching and morphology. Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.), a member of the Solanaceae family, is one of the most popular food crops with high economic value in the world. To seek a better understanding of the responses to exogenous hormones, transcriptome analyses of the tomato shoots treated with exogenous auxin and SL, separately or together, were performed. A total of 2326, 260 and 1379 differential expressed genes (DEGs) were identified under the IAA, GR24 and IAA+GR24 treatments, respectively. Network analysis pointed out two enriched interaction clusters, including "ethylene biosynthesis" and "photosynthesis". Several ethylene biosynthesis and metabolism-related genes were up-regulated under both IAA and IAA+GR24 treatments, suggesting their involvement in the regulation of ethylene biosynthesis. Besides, auxin-SLs-triggered the expression of several CAB genes may lead to systemic increases in the induction of photosynthesis. Several auxin-activated metabolic pathways could be reduced by the GR24 treatment, indicated that the crosstalk between auxin and SLs may be involved in the metabolic regulation of tomato. Further analysis showed that SLs affect the responses of tomato shoots to auxin by inducing the expression of a series of auxin downstream genes. On the other hand, auxin regulated the biosynthesis of SLs by affecting the genes in the "Carotenoid biosynthesis" pathway. Our data will give us an opportunity to reveal the crosstalk between auxin and SLs in the shoots of tomato.
Leaflet Initiation and Blade Expansion Are Separable in Compound Leaf Development

Abstract:Compound leaves are composed of multiple separate blade units termed leaflets. In tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) compound leaves, auxin promotes both leaflet initiation and blade expansion. However, it is unclear how these two developmental processes interact. With highly variable complexity, tomato compound leaves provide an ideal system to address this question. In this study, we obtained and analyzed mutants of the WUSCHEL-RELATED HOMEOBOX (WOX) family gene SlLAM1 from tomato, whose orthologs in tobacco (Nicotiana sylvestris) and other species are indispensable for blade expansion. We show that SlLAM1 is expressed in the middle and marginal domains of leaves, and is required for blade expansion in leaflets. We demonstrate that sllam1 mutants cause a delay of leaflet initiation and slightly alter the arrangement of first-order leaflets, whereas the overall leaflet number is comparable to that of wild-type leaves. Analysis of the genetic interactions between SlLAM1 and key auxin signaling components revealed an epistatic effect of SlLAM1 in determining the final leaf form. Finally, we show that SlLAM1 is also required for floral organ growth and affects the fertility of gametophytes. Our data suggest that SlLAM1 promotes blade expansion in multiple leaf types, and leaflet initiation can be largely uncoupled from blade expansion during compound leaf morphogenesis.
Lateral suppressor and Goblet act in hierarchical order to regulate ectopic meristem formation at the base of tomato leaflets

Abstract:In seed plants, new axes of growth are established by the formation of meristems, groups of pluripotent cells that maintain themselves and initiate the formation of lateral organs. After embryonic development, secondary shoot meristems form in the boundary zones between the shoot apical meristem and leaf primordia, the leaf axils. In addition, many plant species develop ectopic meristems at different positions of the plant body. In the compound tomato leaf, ectopic meristems can initiate at the base of leaflets, which are delimited by two distinct boundary zones, referred to as the proximal (PLB) and distal (DLB) leaflet boundaries. We demonstrate that the two leaflet boundaries differ from each other and that ectopic meristem formation is strictly limited to the DLB. Our data suggest that the DLB harbours a group of pluripotent cells that seems to be the launching pad for meristem formation. Initiation of these meristems is dependent on the activities of the transcriptional regulators Goblet (Gob) and Lateral suppressor (Ls), specifically expressed in the DLB. Gob and Ls act in hierarchical order, because Ls transcript accumulation is dependent on Gob activity, but not vice versa. Ectopic meristem formation at the DLB is also observed in other seed plants, like Cardamine pratensis, indicating that it is part of a widespread developmental program. Ectopic meristem formation leads to an increase in the number of buds, enhances the capacity for survival and opens the route to vegetative propagation.

Abstract:One of the most striking aspects of plant diversity is variation in leaf shape. Much of this diversity is achieved by the modulation of leaf blade dissection to form lobes or leaflets. Here, we show that the phytohormone auxin is a crucial signal regulating the partitioned outgrowth necessary to develop a dissected leaf. In developing leaves, the asymmetric distribution of auxin, driven by active transport, delineates the initiation of lobes and leaflets and specifies differential laminar outgrowth. Furthermore, homologous members of the AUX/indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) gene family mediate the action of auxin in determining leaf shape by repressing outgrowth in areas of low auxin concentration during both simple and compound leaf development. These results provide molecular evidence that leaflets initiate in a process reminiscent of organogenesis at the shoot apical meristem, but that compound and simple leaves regulate marginal growth through an evolutionarily conserved mechanism, thus shedding light on the homology of compound and simple leaves.

Abstract:Abstract Plant leaves have evolved into diverse shapes and LATE MERISTEM IDENTITY1 (LMI1) and its putative paralogous genes encode homeodomain leucine zipper transcription factors that are proposed evolutionary hotspots for the regulation of leaf development in plants. However, the LMI1-mediated regulatory mechanism underlying leaf shape formation is largely unknown. MtLMI1a and MtLMI1b are putative orthologs of LMI1 in the model legume barrelclover (Medicago truncatula). Here, we investigated the role of MtLMI1a and MtLMI1b in leaf margin morphogenesis by characterizing loss-of-function mutants. MtLMI1a and MtLMI1b are expressed along leaf margin in a near-complementary pattern, and they redundantly promote development of leaf margin serrations, as revealed by the relatively smooth leaf margin in their double mutants. Moreover, MtLMI1s directly activate expression of SMOOTH LEAF MARGIN1 (SLM1), which encodes an auxin efflux carrier, thereby regulating auxin distribution along the leaf margin. Further analysis indicates that MtLMI1s genetically interact with NO APICAL MERISTEM (MtNAM) and the ARGONAUTE7 (MtAGO7)-mediated trans-acting short interfering RNA3 (TAS3 ta-siRNA) pathway to develop the final leaf margin shape. The participation of MtLMI1s in auxin-dependent leaf margin formation is interesting in the context of functional conservation. Furthermore, the diverse expression patterns of LMI1s and their putative paralogs within key domains are important drivers for functional specialization, despite their functional equivalency among species.

Sensitive Determination of Sertraline in Commercial Drugs and Its Stability Check in Simulated Gastric Juice.

Abstract:A sensitive analytical method was developed for the determination of sertraline in commercial drug samples by using GC-MS. The selected-ion monitoring mode was used at the most sensitive m/z 274 to obtain a lower detection limit. LOD/LOQ values were obtained as 1.6/5.4 ng/mL for sertraline under the optimum conditions. The calibration plot was linear between 5.0 and 2000 ng/mL with the correlation coefficient of 0.9999. The validated method was successfully applied to three different brands of drug samples for both qualitative and quantitative measurement of sertraline. In this experiment, four replicate extractions were performed for each brand, and the results were compared to the values written on the labels of the drug brands. Spiking experiments were also performed to check the effect of the matrixes on the determination, and it was observed that there was no shift in the retention time of the analyte. In addition, simulated gastric juice experiments were performed to check the stability of sertraline in the stomach for 240 min, and it was observed that there was no change in the structure of the analyte.
Microsurgical and laser ablation analysis of interactions between the zones and layers of the tomato shoot apical meristem

Abstract:Plants exhibit life-long organogenic and histogenic activity in a specialised organ, the shoot apical meristem. Leaves and flowers are formed within the ring-shaped peripheral zone, which surrounds the central zone, the site of the stem cells. We have undertaken a series of high-precision laser ablation and microsurgical tissue removal experiments to test the functions of different parts of the tomato meristem, and to reveal their interactions. Ablation of the central zone led to ectopic expression of the WUSCHELgene at the periphery, followed by the establishment of a new meristem centre. After the ablation of the central zone, organ formation continued without a lag. Thus, the central zone does not participate in organogenesis, except as the ultimate source of founder cells. Microsurgical removal of the external L1 layer induced periclinal cell divisions and terminal differentiation in the subtending layers. In addition, no organs were initiated in areas devoid of L1, demonstrating an important role of the L1 in organogenesis. L1 ablation had only local effects, an observation that is difficult to reconcile with phyllotaxis theories that invoke physical tension operating within the meristem as a whole. Finally, regeneration of L1 cells was never observed after ablation. This shows that while the zones of the meristem show a remarkable capacity to regenerate after interference, elimination of the L1layer is irreparable and causes terminal differentiation.

Renal nerves and postprandial renal excretion in the conscious monkey.

Abstract:Experiments were performed in conscious macaque monkeys to determine if the renal nerves are important in mediating postprandial increases in renal fluid-electrolyte excretion in this species. Monkeys were given a high-sodium meal via a nasogastric tube. Consecutive 10-min urine samples were taken during the 30-min time of meal administration and then 180 min postprandially. The experiment was performed both before and 10-14 days after each animal underwent renal denervation. Diuresis and natriuresis occurred under both renal-innervated and -denervated conditions. However, the amounts of urine and sodium excreted were less after renal denervation. For the total 210 min of measurements obtained after the meal was started, cumulative urine output was 95.0 +/- 26.4 ml and sodium excretion 7.18 +/- 1.74 meq in innervated kidneys vs. 56.7 +/- 7.0 ml (a 40% decrease; P less than 0.005) and 4.84 +/- 0.99 meq (a 33% decrease; P less than 0.01) after denervation. These results demonstrate that the renal nerves are important in the nonhuman primate for eliciting the postprandial changes in urinary excretion secondary to intake of a high-sodium meal.

Abstract:The superior photosynthetic efficiency of C 4 leaves over C 3 leaves is owing to their unique Kranz anatomy, in which the vein is surrounded by one layer of bundle sheath (BS) cells and one layer of mesophyll (M) cells. Kranz anatomy development starts from three contiguous ground meristem (GM) cells, but its regulators and underlying molecular mechanism are largely unknown. To identify the regulators, we obtained the transcriptomes of 11 maize embryonic leaf cell types from five stages of pre-Kranz cells starting from median GM cells and six stages of pre-M cells starting from undifferentiated cells. Principal component and clustering analyses of transcriptomic data revealed rapid pre-Kranz cell differentiation in the first two stages but slow differentiation in the last three stages, suggesting early Kranz cell fate determination. In contrast, pre-M cells exhibit a more prolonged transcriptional differentiation process. Differential gene expression and coexpression analyses identified gene coexpression modules, one of which included 3 auxin transporter and 18 transcription factor (TF) genes, including known regulators of Kranz anatomy and/or vascular development. In situ hybridization of 11 TF genes validated their expression in early Kranz development. We determined the binding motifs of 15 TFs, predicted TF target gene relationships among the 18 TF and 3 auxin transporter genes, and validated 67 predictions by electrophoresis mobility shift assay. From these data, we constructed a gene regulatory network for Kranz development. Our study sheds light on the regulation of early maize leaf development and provides candidate leaf development regulators for future study.

Abstract:Inflorescence architecture directly impacts yield potential in most crops. As a model of sympodial plants, tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) inflorescence exhibits highly structural plasticity. However, the genetic regulatory network of inflorescence architecture in tomato remains unclear. Here, we investigated a modulator of inflorescence branching in tomato, TARGET OF EAT1 (SlTOE1), an APETALA2 (AP2) family member found to be predominantly expressed in the floral meristem (FM) of tomato. sltoe1 knockout mutants displayed highly branched inflorescences and defective floral organs. Transcriptome analysis revealed that SISTER of TM3 (STM3) and certain floral development-related genes were up-regulated in the flower meristem of sltoe1. SlTOE1 could directly bind the promoters of STM3 and TM3 (Tomato MADS-box gene 3) to repress their transcription. Simultaneous mutation of STM3 and TM3 partially restored the inflorescence branching of the sltoe1cr mutants, suggesting that SlTOE1 regulates inflorescence development, at least in part through an SlTOE1-STM3/TM3 module. Genetic analysis showed that SlTOE1 and ENHANCER OF JOINTLESS 2 (EJ2) additively regulate tomato inflorescence branching; their double mutants showed more extensive inflorescence branching. Our findings uncover a pathway controlling tomato inflorescence branching and offer deeper insight in the functions of AP2 subfamily members.

Abstract:Tomato flower abscises at the anatomically distinct abscission zone that separates the pedicel into basal and apical portions. During abscission, cell separation occurs only at the abscission zone indicating distinctive molecular regulation in its cells. We conducted a transcriptome analysis of tomato pedicel tissues during ethylene promoted abscission. We found that the abscission zone was the most active site with the largest set of differentially expressed genes when compared with basal and apical portions. Gene Ontology analyses revealed enriched transcription regulation and hydrolase activities in the abscission zone. We also demonstrate coordinated responses of hormone and cell wall related genes. Besides, a number of ESTs representing homologs of key Arabidopsis shoot apical meristem activity genes were found to be preferentially expressed in the abscission zone, including WUSCHEL (WUS), KNAT6, LATERAL ORGAN BOUNDARIES DOMAIN PROTEIN 1(LBD1), and BELL-like homeodomain protein 1 (BLH1), as well as tomato axillary meristem genes BLIND (Bl) and LATERAL SUPPRESSOR (Ls). More interestingly, the homologs of WUS and the potential functional partner OVATE FAMILIY PROTEIN (OFP) were subsequently down regulated during abscission while Bl and AGL12 were continuously and specifically induced in the abscission zone. The expression patterns of meristem activity genes corroborate the idea that cells of the abscission zone confer meristem-like nature and coincide with the course of abscission and post-abscission cell differentiation. Our data therefore propose a possible regulatory scheme in tomato involving meristem genes that may be required not only for the abscission zone development, but also for abscission.
Transcriptome Analysis of Early Lateral Root Formation in Tomato

Abstract:Lateral roots (LRs) receive signals from the inter-root environment and absorb water and nutrients from the soil. Auxin regulates LR formation, but the mechanism in tomato remains largely unknown. In this study, 'Ailsa Craig' tomato LRs appeared on the third day and were unevenly distributed in primary roots. According to the location of LR occurrence, roots were divided into three equal parts: the shootward part of the root (RB), the middle part of the root (RM), and the tip part of the root (RT). Transverse sections of roots from days 1 to 6 revealed that the number of RB cells and the root diameter were significantly increased compared with RM and RT. Using roots from days 1 to 3, we carried out transcriptome sequencing analysis. Identified genes were classified into 16 co-expression clusters based on K-means, and genes in four associated clusters were highly expressed in RB. These four clusters (3, 5, 8, and 16) were enriched in cellulose metabolism, microtubule, and peptide metabolism pathways, all closely related to LR development. The four clusters contain numerous transcription factors linked to LR development including transcription factors of LATERAL ORGAN BOUNDRIES (LOB) and MADS-box families. Additionally, auxin-related genes GATA23, ARF7, LBD16, EXP, IAA4, IAA7, PIN1, PIN2, YUC3, and YUC4 were highly expressed in RB tissue. Free IAA content in 3 d RB was notably higher, reaching 3.3–5.5 ng/g, relative to RB in 1 d and 2 d. The LR number was promoted by 0.1 μM of exogenous IAA and inhibited by exogenous NPA. We analyzed the root cell state and auxin signaling module during LR formation. At a certain stage of pericycle cell development, LR initiation is regulated by auxin signaling modules IAA14-ARF7/ARF19-LBD16-CDKA1 and IAA14-ARF7/ARF19-MUS/MUL-XTR6/EXP. Polar auxin transport modulates early leaf flattening

Abstract:The flattened leaf form is an important adaptation for efficient photosynthesis, and the developmental process of flattened leaves has been intensively studied. Classic microsurgery studies in potato and tomato suggest that the shoot apical meristem (SAM) communicates with the leaf primordia to promote leaf blade formation. More recently, it was found that polar auxin transport (PAT) could mediate this communication. However, it is unclear how the expression of leaf patterning genes is tailored by PAT routes originating from SAM. By combining experimental observations and computer model simulations, we show that microsurgical incisions and local inhibition of PAT in tomato interfere with auxin transport toward the leaf margins, reducing auxin response levels and altering the leaf blade shape. Importantly, oval auxin responses result in the bipolar expression of SlLAM1 that determines leaf blade formation. Furthermore, wounding caused by incisions promotes degradation of SlREV, a known regulator of leaf polarity. Additionally, computer simulations suggest that local auxin biosynthesis in early leaf primordia could remove necessity for external auxin supply originating from SAM, potentially explaining differences between species. Together, our findings establish how PAT near emerging leaf primordia determines spatial auxin patterning and refines SlLAM1 expression in the leaf margins to guide leaf flattening.
The NAC-domain transcription factor GOBLET specifies leaflet boundaries in compound tomato leaves

Abstract:Leaves are formed at the flanks of the shoot apical meristem (SAM) and develop into a variety of forms. In tomato, prolonged leaf patterning enables the elaboration of compound leaves by reiterative initiation of leaflets with lobed margins. In goblet (gob) loss-of-function mutants, primary leaflets are often fused, secondary leaflets and marginal serrations are absent, and SAMs often terminate precociously. We show that GOB encodes a NAC-domain transcription factor expressed in narrow stripes at the leaf margins, flanking the distal side of future leaflet primordia, and at the boundaries between the SAM and leaf primordia. Leaf-specific overexpression of the microRNA miR164, a negative regulator of GOB-like genes, also leads to loss of secondary-leaflet initiation and to smooth leaflet margins. Plants carrying a dominant gob allele with an intact ORF but disrupted miR164 binding site produce more cotyledons and floral organs, have split SAMs and, surprisingly, simpler leaves. Overexpression of a form of GOB with an altered miR164 binding site in leaf primordia leads to delayed leaflet maturation, frequent, improperly timed and spaced initiation events, and a simple mature leaflet form owing to secondary-leaflet fusion. miR164 also affects leaflet separation in Cardamine hirsuta, a Brassicaceae species with complex leaves. Genetic and molecular analyses suggest that GOB expression is intact in the simplified leaves of entire tomato mutants, which have a defect in a putative repressor of auxin responses. Our results show that GOB marks leaflet boundaries and that its accurate spatial, temporal and quantitative activity affects leaf elaboration in a context-dependent manner.
Differentiating ZIP Codes in Syndromic Data; What Can They Tell Us?

Abstract:Objective To classify visits to NYC emergency departments (ED) into NYC residential, NYC PO Box or commercial building, commuters to NYC, and out-of-town visitors. To describe patterns in each group, to evaluate how they differ, and to consider how the differences can affect syndromic surveillance analyses and results. Introduction The NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) ED syndromic surveillance system receives data from 95% of all ED visits in NYC totaling 4 million visits each year. The data include residential ZIP code as reported by the patient. ZIP code information has been used by the DOHMH to separate visits into NYC and non-NYC for analysis; and, a closer examination of non-NYC visits may further inform disease surveillance. Methods Visits were initially differentiated into six home ZIP code types. NYC residential ZIP codes, PO Boxes and commercial buildings were identified with 2010 US Census and data from the SAS institute (SAS Institute Inc., Cary, NC, USA). Commuter visits to the EDs were classified as any ZIP codes from the NYC Core Based Statistical Area (CBSA; United States Office of Management and Budget). Out of town visits were identified using with the 2010 US Census. Unknown ZIP codes included all of those ZIP codes that were not identified by any of the previous methods, and missing ZIP codes were those that were blank. ZIP codes were verified with the United States Postal Service website (www.usps.com). Once ZIP codes were categorized, spatial and temporal trends in total ED visits by home ZIP code type were analyzed. Results Of the approximately 4 million ED visits in NYC during 2011, the number of visits by commuters and out-of-town visitors were 125,236 (3.1%) and 45,158 (1.1%) respectively (Figure 1). There were 4,676 (0.1%) visits with a NYC PO Box or building ZIP codes and 48,077 (1.2%) visits with a missing or non-interpretable ZIP codes. The majority of commuter and out-of-town ED visits occur at a smaller set of hospitals. Out-of town visitors mostly visited hospitals in Manhattan rather than hospitals in the outer boroughs. While the seasonal trends and day-of-week patterns for the NYC residents and the commuters appear to be fairly similar, this is not the case for out-of-town visitors. For example, total ED visit trends correlated well for NYC residents and commuters (r=0.77), but there was no correlation between NYC residents and out-of-town visitors (r=−0.18) over time. The number of ED visits among out-of-town visitors was higher during summer months and the winter holiday season, and this trend may have reflected the larger number of visitors during these periods. Day-of-week patterns were similar for NYC residents and commuters with weekdays associated with larger numbers of visits compared to weekends. However, the opposite was found true for out-of-town visitors with larger number of visits occurring over the weekends compared to weekdays. Conclusions Considerable differences in temporal trends were found among out-of-town visitors, NYC residents, and commuters to NYC. Out-of-town visitors also tend to visit EDs located in Manhattan rather than in the outer boroughs. These results suggest that out-of-town visitors represent a unique population ED visitors. Analyzing NYC residents, commuters, and out-of-town visitors separately may provide additional information that could prove useful to daily syndromic surveillance activities.

Abstract:Many developmental processes associated with fruit development occur at the floral meristem (FM). Age-regulated microRNA156 (miR156) and gibberellins (GAs) interact to control flowering time, but their interplay in subsequent stages of reproductive development is poorly understood. Here, in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), we show that GA and miR156-targeted SQUAMOSA PROMOTER-BINDING PROTEIN-LIKE (SPL or SBP) genes interact in the tomato FM and ovary patterning. High GA responses or overexpression of miR156 (156OE), which leads to low expression levels of miR156-silenced SBP genes, resulted in enlarged FMs, ovary indeterminacy and fruits with increased locule number. Conversely, low GA responses reduced indeterminacy and locule number, and overexpression of a S. lycopersicum (Sl)SBP15 allele that is miR156 resistant (rSBP15) reduced FM size and locule number. GA responses were partially required for the defects observed in 156OE and rSBP15 fruits. Transcriptome analysis and genetic interactions revealed shared and divergent functions of miR156-targeted SlSBP genes, PROCERA/DELLA and the classical WUSCHEL/CLAVATA pathway, which has been previously associated with meristem size and determinacy. Our findings reveal that the miR156/SlSBP/GA regulatory module is deployed differently depending on developmental stage and create novel opportunities to fine-tune aspects of fruit development that have been important for tomato domestication.
