Abstract:The design and synthesis of superhard carbon nitrides have always been a focus of attention. Recently, an experiment has revealed the existence of the previously predicted three-dimensional strongly covalent carbon-rich Pnnm-CN structure with high incompressibility. This discovery promotes the study of new carbon-rich C-N compounds with various stoichiometric ratios. In this paper, we investigated the electronic and mechanical properties of carbon-rich C-N compounds with the structural analogues of a very recently proposed pentadiamond. The carbon-rich C10N and C19N3 were constructed by replacing the carbon atoms of the pentadiamond with nitride atoms at specific positions. The elastic and dynamic stabilities were confirmed by the calculations of the elastic constants and the phonon spectra. The C19N3 possessed a bulk modulus of 257.6 GPa, a shear modulus of 168.4 GPa, a Young's modulus of 414.8 GPa, and a hardness of 21.4 GPa, which were similar to the properties of the C10N. The analyses of the band structure and the density of states showed that the C10N and the C19N3 were both metallic, completely different from the semiconducting pentadiamond. The detailed electron orbital analysis showed that the C10N and C19N3 had different conductive behaviors due to the different positions of nitrogen atoms in the structures. In addition, our research expands the scope of C-N compounds and provides new ideas for the later theoretical design of carbon-rich C-N compounds.
Nitrogen-Nitrogen Bonds Violate Stability of N-Doped Graphene

Abstract:Two-dimensional alloys of carbon and nitrogen represent an urgent interest due to prospective applications in nanomechanical and optoelectronic devices. Stability of these chemical structures must be understood as a function of their composition. The present study employs hybrid density functional theory and reactive molecular dynamics simulations to get insights regarding how many nitrogen atoms can be incorporated into the graphene sheet without destroying it. We conclude that (1) C:N=56:28 structure and all nitrogen-poorer structures maintain stability at 1000 K; (2) stability suffers from N-N bonds; (3) distribution of electron density heavily depends on the structural pattern in the N-doped graphene. Our calculations support experimental efforts on the production of highly N-doped graphene and tuning mechanical and optoelectronic properties of graphene.

Abstract:This detailed investigation employs an ab initio approach to explore the atomic structure and electronic properties of an amorphous carbon nitride (C3N4) model. The model, designed with an exact 3:4 ratio, is based on an amorphous boron nitride configuration. The study reveals crucial insights into the mean coordination number for C and N atoms within the amorphous structure. With values of 2.95 for C atoms and 2.21 for N atoms, these coordination numbers closely resemble those observed in graphite-like crystals. The local structure of the amorphous network exhibits similarities to the triazine-based graphitic C3N4 crystal and is notably devoid of homopolar bonds. The estimated band gap for the amorphous C3N4 model is 1.2 eV, representing a significant reduction compared to the crystal structure, which exhibits a band gap of about 2.93 eV as determined through GGA+U calculations.

Abstract:The pressure-induced transformation of diatomic nitrogen into non-molecular polymeric phases may produce potentially useful high-energy-density materials. We combine first-principles calculations with structure searching to predict a new class of nitrogen-rich boron nitrides with a stoichiometry of B3N5 that are stable or metastable relative to solid N2 and h-BN at ambient pressure. The most stable phase at ambient pressure has a layered structure (h-B3N5) containing hexagonal B3N3 layers sandwiched with intercalated freely rotating N2 molecules. At 15 GPa, a three-dimensional C2221 structure with single N-N bonds becomes the most stable. This pressure is much lower than that required for triple-to-single bond transformation in pure solid nitrogen (110 GPa). More importantly, C2221-B3N5 is metastable, and can be recovered under ambient conditions. Its energy density of 3.44 kJ/g makes it a potential high-energy-density material. In addition, stress-strain calculations estimate a Vickers hardness of 44 GPa. Structure searching reveals a new clathrate sodalite-like BN structure that is metastable under ambient conditions.

Abstract:Stabilization of the pentazole anion only by acidic circumstances entrapment impedes the realization of a full-nitrogen substance; however, compression of nitrogen-rich nitrides has been recommend as an alternative way that has more controllable advantages to acquire the atomic nitrogen states. Through the structure searches are in conjunction with first-principle calculations, moderate pressure stabilized nitrogen-rich zinc nitrides with abundant extended nitrogen structures, e.g., cyclo-N5, infinite -(N4)n- chains, three-point stars N(N3), and N2 dumbbells, are predicted. The resonance between alternating σ bonds and π bonds in poly nitrogen sublattices takes charge of the coexistence of single and double bonds. The Zn(N5)2 salt has a noteworthy energy density (6.57 kJ/g) among the reported binary metal nitrides and synthesized pentazolate hydrates. An excellent Vicker's hardness (34 GPa) and detonation performance is unraveled. Although Zn(N5)2 salt is not expected to be recoverable at ambient conditions, it is worth noting that Zn(N5)2 is found to be stable at a very low pressure of ∼30 GPa, which is only half of those pressures required to synthesize CsN5. We clarified that the metal-centering octahedral pentazolate framework was entrapped by dual ionic-covalent bonds. More importantly, the covalent bonding can effectively enhance the chemical insensitivity and thermal stability, further preventing the autodecomposition of monatomic solid N5- anions into dinitrogen. Meanwhile, a unique topological pseudogap that attached to a metastable phase of ZnN4 salt is exposed for the first time, due to the dual effects of strong covalent sp2 hybridization interaction and the origin of ionic states.
All-Nitrogen Cages and Molecular Crystals: Topological Rules, Stability, and Pyrolysis Paths

Abstract:We combined ab initio molecular dynamics with the intrinsic reaction coordinate in order to investigate the mechanisms of stability and pyrolysis of N4 ÷ N120 fullerene-like nitrogen cages. The stability of the cages was evaluated in terms of the activation barriers and the activation Gibbs energies of their thermal-induced breaking. We found that binding energies, bond lengths, and quantum-mechanical descriptors failed to predict the stability of the cages. However, we derived a simple topological rule that adjacent hexagons on the cage surface resulted in its instability. For this reason, the number of stable nitrogen cages is significantly restricted in comparison with their carbon counterparts. As a rule, smaller clusters are more stable, whereas the earlier proposed large cages collapse at room temperature. The most stable all-nitrogen cages are the N4 and N6 clusters, which can form the van der Waals crystals with densities of 1.23 and 1.36 g/cm3, respectively. The examination of their band structures and densities of electronic states shows that they are both insulators. Their power and sensitivity are not inferior to the modern advanced high-energy nanosystems.

Abstract:Polymeric nitrogen has attracted much attention owing to its possible application as an environmentally safe high-energy-density material. Based on a crystal structure search method accelerated by the use of machine learning and graph theory and on first-principles calculations, we predict a series of metal nitrides with chain-like polynitrogen (P21-AlN6, P21-GaN6, P-1-YN6, and P4/mnc-TiN8), all of which are estimated to be energetically stable below 40.8 GPa. Phonon calculations and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations at finite temperature suggest that these nitrides are dynamically stable. We find that the nitrogen in these metal nitrides can polymerize into two types of poly-N42− chains, in which the π electrons are either extended or localized. Owing to the presence of the polymerized N4 chains, these metal nitrides can store a large amount of chemical energy, which is estimated to range from 4.50 to 2.71 kJ/g. Moreover, these compounds have high detonation pressures and detonation velocities, exceeding those of conventional explosives such as TNT and HMX.
Beyond Graphitic Carbon Nitride: Nitrogen-Rich Penta-Cn2 Sheet

Abstract:Using first-principles calculations combined with ab initio molecular dynamics and tight binding model, we predict the existence of a kinetically stable two-dimensional (2D) penta-CN2 sheet, which is isostructural to the recently discovered pentagraphene. The concentration of N in this new carbon nitride sheet exceeds the maximum N content, namely 21.66%, that has been achieved experimentally in honeycomb geometry. It even exceeds the N content found recently in hole-doped carbon nitride C0.5N0.5, as well as in porous graphitic C3N4. The penta-CN2 sheet contains N-N single bonds with an energy density of 4.41 kJ/g, higher than that predicted recently in nitrogen rich B-N compound. Remarkably, penta-CN2 has an in-plane axial Young's modulus of 319 N/m, even stiffer than the h-BN monolayer. The electronic band structure of penta-CN2 exhibits an interesting double degeneracy at the first Brillouin zone edges which is protected by the nonsymmorphic symmetry and can be found in other isostructural chemical analogues. The band gap of penta-CN, calculated using HSEO6 functional is 6.53 eV, suggesting its insulating nature. The prediction of a stable penta-CN2 implies that puckering might be more effective than porosity in holding nitrogen in 2D carbon nitrides. This sheds new light on how to design nitrogen-rich C-N compounds beyond N-doped graphene.

Abstract:More than thirty years ago, carbon nitrides featuring 3D frameworks of tetrahedral CN4 units were identified as one of the great aspirations of materials science, expected to have a hardness greater than or comparable to diamond. Since then, no unambiguous experimental evidence of their existence has been delivered. Here, we report the high-pressure high-temperature synthesis of the long-sought-after covalent carbon nitrides, tI14-C3N4, hP126-C3N4, and tI24-CN2, in laser-heated diamond anvil cells. Their structures were solved and refined using synchrotron single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In these solids, carbon atoms, all sp3-hybridized, and nitrogen atoms are fully saturated, forming four and three covalent bonds, respectively, leading to three-dimensional arrangements of corner-sharing CN4 tetrahedra. These carbon nitrides are ultra-incompressible, with hP126-C3N4 and tI24-CN2 even rivalling diamond's incompressibility, and superhard. These novel compounds are recoverable to ambient conditions in crystalline form and chemically stable in air. Being wide-band gap semiconductors with intriguing features in their electronic structure, they are expected to exhibit multiple exceptional functionalities besides their mechanical properties, opening new perspectives for materials science.
Ultra high stiffness and thermal conductivity of graphene like C3N

Abstract:Recently, single crystalline carbon nitride 2D material with a C3N stoichiometry has been synthesized. In this investigation, we explored the mechanical response and thermal transport along pristine, free-standing and single-layer C3N. To this aim, we conducted extensive first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations as well as molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. DFT results reveal that C3N nanofilms can yield remarkably high elastic modulus of 341 <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://GPa.nm" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> and tensile strength of 35 <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://GPa.nm" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>, very close to those of defect-free graphene. Classical MD simulations performed at a low temperature, predict accurately the elastic modulus of 2D C3N with less than 3% difference with the first-principles estimation. The deformation process of C3N nanosheets was studied both by the DFT and MD simulations. Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations show that single-layer C3N can withstand high temperatures like 4000 K. Notably, the phononic thermal conductivity of free-standing C3N was predicted to be as high as 815 W/mK. Our atomistic modelling results reveal ultra high stiffness and thermal conductivity of C3N nanomembranes and therefore propose them as promising candidates for new application such as the thermal management in nanoelectronics or simultaneously reinforcing the thermal and mechanical properties of polymeric materials.

Structure and optical properties of polymeric carbon nitrides from atomistic simulations

Abstract:Detailed understanding of the structural and photophysical properties of polymeric carbon nitride (PCN) materials is of critical importance to derive future material optimization strategies towards more desirable optical properties and more photocatalytically active materials. However, the wide range of structural motifs found in synthesized PCNs complicates atomistic simulations that rely on well defined models. Performing hybrid DFT studies, we systematically investigate formation energy trends and optical properties of PCNs as a function of dimensionality, going from molecular oligomers over periodic sheet models to stacked crystals. Thermochemical calculations that take into account vibrational enthalpy and entropy contributions predict that a mixture of structural motifs including the melon string structure, poly(heptazine imide), and g-C3N4 motifs is stable under typical synthetic conditions. The degree of lateral condensation as well as stacking can reduce the bandgap while out-of-plane corrugation of the material increases both stability and the optical gap. The key result of this work is that already small domains of strongly condensed PCN are calculated to give rise to favorable optical properties. This result reconciles conflicting literature reports indicating that the thermodynamically favorable melon motif has a too large bandgap compared to experiments, while the g-C3N4 structure, for which bandgap calculations are in better agreement with experiments, does not agree with measured chemical compositions of PCNs. Finally, we postulate a new computational model for carbon nitride materials that encompasses the most important structural motifs and shows a bandgap of ca. 2.9 eV.

Abstract:Energy generation and storage are at the center of modern civilization. Energetic materials constitute quite a large class of compounds with a high amount of stored chemical energy that can be released. We hereby use a combination of quantum chemistry methods to investigate feasibility and properties of carbon-nitrogen cubanes and multi-charged polynitrogen cations in the context of their synthesis and application as unprecedented energetic materials. We show that the stored energy increases gradually with the nitrogen content increase. Nitrogen-poor cubanes retain their stabilities in vacuum, even at elevated temperatures. Such molecules will be probably synthesized at some point. In turn, polynitrogen cations are highly unstable, except N8H+, despite they are isoelectronic to all-carbon cubane. Kinetic stability of the cation decays drastically as its total charge increases. High-level thermodynamic calculations revealed that large amounts of energy are liberated upon decompositions of polynitrogen cations, which produce molecular nitrogen, acetylene, and protons. The present results bring a substantial insights to the design of novel high-energy compounds.

Abstract:In this study, we conduct extensive high-pressure experiments to investigate phase stability in the cobalt-nitrogen system. Through a combination of synthesis in a laser-heated diamond anvil cell, first-principles calculations, Raman spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction, we establish the stability fields of known high-pressure phases, hexagonal NiAs-type CoN, and marcasite-type CoN2 within the pressure range of 50-90 GPa. We synthesize and characterize previously unknown nitrides, Co3N2, Pnma-CoN and two polynitrides, CoN3 and CoN5, within the pressure range of 90-120 GPa. Both polynitrides exhibit novel types of polymeric nitrogen chains and networks. CoN3 feature branched-type nitrogen trimers (N3) and CoN5 show π-bonded nitrogen chain. As the nitrogen content in the cobalt nitride increases, the CoN6 polyhedral frameworks transit from face-sharing (in CoN) to edge-sharing (in CoN2 and CoN3), and finally to isolated (in CoN5). Our study provides insights into the intricate interplay between structure evolution, bonding arrangements, and high-pressure synthesis in polynitrides, expanding the knowledge for the development of advanced energy materials.
Structural diversity of molecular nitrogen on approach to polymeric states

Abstract:Nitrogen represents an archetypal example of material exhibiting a pressure driven transformation from molecular to polymeric state. Detailed investigations of such transformations are challenging because of a large kinetic barrier between molecular and polymeric structures, making the transformation largely dependent on kinetic stimuli. In the case of nitrogen, additional complications occur due to the rich polymorphism in the vicinity of the transition. Here, we report the observation of both molecular (\theta) and polymeric (BP) phases, crystallized upon temperature quenching of fluid nitrogen to room temperature at 97-114 GPa. Synchrotron single-crystal X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and first-principles theoretical calculations have been used for diagnostics of the phases and determination of their structure and stability. Molecular \theta-nitrogen is the most stable among molecular phases bordering the stability field of polymeric phases, partially settling a previously noted discrepancy between theory and experiment concerning the thermodynamic stability limit of molecular phases.

Abstract:In this work, using first-principles calculations based on density functional theory were performed to predict the structural stability, electronic structure, optical properties and thermodynamic properties of three nitrides (AlBN2, Al3BN4 and AlB3N4). The calculated formation enthalpies of AlBN2, Al3BN4, and AlB3N4 are −5.369, −6.108, and −5.630 eV/atom, respectively, suggesting that the structures of these three nitrides are stable. By calculating the phonon spectrum and phonon density of states, it can be known that the three nitrides are dynamically stable. The electronic structure data reveal that the band gaps of AlBN2, Al3BN4, and AlB3N4 are 3.35, 3.05, and 3.59 eV, respectively. The polycrystalline and directional optical properties are discussed, and the AOPT of AlBN2 is [0.99, 0.99], indicating its optical anisotropy. Finally, a detailed examination of thermodynamic parameters reveals that Al3BN4 has the most stable thermodynamic properties, and the order of stability is: Al3BN4 > AlB3N4 > AlBN2.

Abstract:Carbon nitride (CNx) thin films with high nitrogen content were deposited on Si (100) substrates by using electron cyclotron resonance nitrogen plasma assisted pulsed laser deposition (ECR-PLD), and their thermal stability were studied by examining their composition and bonding behaviors upon post-deposition heat annealing in vacuum and in nitrogen ambient. The as-deposited films contain nitrogen content varying around 50 at.% and are primarily amorphous containing several bonding configurations between carbon and nitrogen atoms with different bond components depending on bias voltage applied to the substrates. In addition to the D, G and L Raman bands reported for most CNx thin films, three prominent Raman peaks were observed at 170, 260 and 616 cm(-1) from our as-deposited films. Composition analysis by Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy measurement and chemical structure characterization by Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy and Raman scattering measurements showed that the ECR-PLD deposited CNx thin films are quite stable upon annealing in vacuum up to 750 degrees C. Two-dimensional tetragonal carbon nitride semiconductors with fascinating electronic/optical properties and low thermal conductivity

Abstract:Exploring two-dimensional (2D) tetragonal carbon nitride materials is significant for unlocking new physical properties beyond those offered by traditional hexagonal lattices. In this work, we propose three theoretically stable 2D carbon nitride monolayers with tetragonal lattices, namely T-C3N, P-C3N, and PH-C5N4. Electronic structure calculations indicate that all three monolayers exhibit semiconducting characteristics, with T-C3N showing interesting flat band features. Additionally, these three carbon nitrides exhibit anisotropic and high carrier mobilities and excellent light absorption capabilities in the visible-light and near-infrared regions. Meanwhile, the calculated thermal conductivity (κp) of PH-C5N4 is 63.9 Wm−1K−1 at room temperature, significantly outperforming T-C3N (12.2 Wm−1K−1) and P-C3N (18.9 Wm−1K−1). Phonon scattering rates and Grüneisen parameters confirm the origin for the relatively high κp in PH-C5N4. Abstract:Combining the extended cluster expansion method and the first-principles calculations, we have systematically investigated the structural stabilities of nitrogen doped C60 fullerene. With the structural recognition, we have calculated all possible isomers of C60-nNn (n = 1–4) to obtain their ground state structures using the first-principles method. For C60-nNn (n = 5–9) heterofullerenes, we have estimated the energy by the extended cluster expansion method to screen the candidates efficiently, followed by first-principles confirmation for the low-lying structures. For C60-nNn with more than 9 nitrogen atoms, we developed a classification method to select the candidates and successfully obtained the low-lying isomers. The most stable structures for C60-nNn (n = 3–11) we obtained have lower energies compared to the structures in previous studies. Notably, we have found 26 low-lying structures of C48N12 azafullerenes, from their 11.6 billion isomers.
