Abstract:Developing photocatalysts for coproduction of hydrogen fuel and valuable chemicals is highly desired but still challenging. Herein, Pd-modified defective HNb3O8 photocatalyst (denote as Pd/HNb3O8-H-2) consisting of dispersive Pd sites and abundant surface oxygen vacancies (V(O)s) was prepared via the thermal treatment of Pd2+-incorporated HNb3O8 in H-2/Ar gas. The existence of Pd favors the formation of V(O)s on HNb3O8, enabling the synchronous construction of Pd and V-O dual active sites. The spectroscopy and photoelectrochemical studies demonstrate the advantages of Pd/HNb3O8-H-2 photocatalyst in promoting the separation and migration of photoinduced charge carries. The Pd/HNb3O8-H-2 photocatalyst exhibits the outstanding performance toward photocatalytic proton reduction coupled with selective benzyl-alcohol oxidation, achieving the optimal production rates of H-2 and benzaldehyde as high as 3.17 and 2.76 mmol.g(cat)(-1) h(-1), respectively. The experimental and theoretical investigations have expounded the synergistic mechanism of Pd and V-O dual active sites in boosting photocatalytic coproduction of H-2 and benzaldehyde.

Abstract:In the renewable energy field, solar-driven photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting into H2 which has features of high energy density, high conversion efficiency and non-pollution is an efficient, inexpensive way to relieve the energy crisis. Silicon, with a bandgap of 1.1eV as an earth-abundant and efficient solar light absorption material is considered to be one of the most promising candidates for hydrogen generation in PEC devices. However, at present, most of the hydrogen evolution reactions are studied in heavily acidic condition such as 0.5M H2SO4, as for practical application, acid condition is high-cost and not environment-friendly. It’s necessary and challenging to explore photocathodes which can be used in neutral solution. The low-cost and stable transition metal sulfides materials as electrocatalysts for water splitting have grabbed more attention of researchers in recent years. Their suitable bandgap can make them absorb light over a wide range so that the solar energy can be fully used. In this study，it was found that Ni3S2 was an excellent electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution in neutral solution. Moreover, p-Si /Ni3S2 core/shell array shows an enhanced PEC performance due to the cooperation of p-Si array’s excellent light harvesting and the optical properties of flake-like Ni3S2. By tuning the material’s composition, morphology and structure, their optical properties and stability can be optimized and applied in neutral solution. This work will generate significant new knowledge of the stable and unique core-shell nanostructure and make a meaningful contribution to the industrial application of potential hydrogen energy.
Synergistic Use of a Solid Solution and a Cocatalyst on Co x Cd 1– x S/Ni y Fe 1– y -LDH for Efficient and Stable Photoelectrochemical Performance

Abstract:Cadmium sulfide (CdS)-based photoelectrodes have been extensively studied in photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting, but these semiconductors still suffer from low photogenerated carrier separation efficiency and poor photostability. Herein, we synthesized and explored a CoxCd1–xS/NiyFe1–y-LDH composite photoanode composed of a CoxCd1–xS solid solution and a NiyFe1–y-LDH cocatalyst. Compared with the pristine CdS film, the synthesized Co0.30Cd0.70S/Ni0.50Fe0.50-LDH composite film has optimum PEC activity and photostability in the process of water oxidation due to the synergism of the solid solution and the cocatalyst. First, the Co0.30Cd0.70S solid solution doped with an appropriate amount of Co2+ can not only effectively absorb photons but also maximize the utilization of photons, thereby improving the PEC performance. Second, Ni0.50Fe0.50-LDH in the outer layer of the Co0.30Cd0.70S/Ni0.50Fe0.50-LDH photoanode promotes the reaction kinetics of surface oxygen production of Co0.30Cd0.70S, which further improves the carrier density and the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers. Meanwhile, the Ni0.50Fe0.50-LDH cocatalyst quickly captures and transports photogenerated holes to promote the photocorrosion resistance of Co0.30Cd0.70S. Abstract:The elaborate modulation of charge transfer in Z-scheme heterojunctions is of significant importance yet poses a formidable challenge for achieving efficient photocatalytic hydrogen production. The present study reports the fabrication of ZnCdS nanoparticle wrapped by NiCo-layered double hydroxide with enriched oxygen vacancies (ZCS@LDH-O v ) was fabricated, which exhibits enhanced interfacial binding and internal electric field (IEF) in comparison to ZCS@LDH. Under visible-light irradiation, the as-prepared ZCS@LDH-O v exhibits a superior photocatalytic H 2 production rate of up to 2.68 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 , which is approximately 9.24-fold and 2.68-fold of the pristine ZnCdS and ZCS@LDH, respectively. The stability of the photocatalyst after 5 cycles is obviously enhanced, with ZCS@LDH exhibiting a remaining hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) rate of 52.7 % and ZCS@LDH-O v demonstrating an impressive remaining rate of 98.2 %. The Z-scheme facilitates rapid charge transfer and efficient separation, thereby enhancing the catalytic activity for HER. The excellent recyclability of ZCS@LDH-O v is primarily attributed to enhanced photo-corrosion resistance of ZnCdS, which can be ascribed to the efficient transfer of photo-generated holes through a rapid interfacial charge pathway.

In Situ Photochemical Fabrication of CdS/g-C3N4 Nanocomposites with High Performance for Hydrogen Evolution under Visible Light

Abstract:Stable photo catalysts with high performance for hydrogen evolution under visible light are important in the field of renewable energy. Herein, a hybrid composite of CdS/g-C3N4 with a tunable density of CdS was made through in situ photochemical deposition of CdS nanodots onto g-C3N4 nanosheets. The resulting material was much more active under visible light than CdS and g-C3N4 , not only for the photocatalytic evolution of H-2 in the presence of lactic acid but also for the photo electrochemical oxidation of water. The maximum rate of H-2 production was 2537 mu mol g(-1) h(-1), which was 2-10 times higher than the reported values. Importantly, the present CdS/g-C3N4 material was very stable during continuous irradiation for 55 h. The enhanced activity and stability are attributed to precise regulation of the position of CdS on the g-C3N4 surface and the formation of a type II heterojunction, increasing visible light absorption, favoring band overlapping, and promoting charge separation for interfacial reactions. This study opens a new avenue for the in situ engineering of stable photo catalysts to produce rich and active heterointerfaces for H-2 and O-2 evolution.

Abstract:Hydrogen production technologies have attracted considerable attention with the increasing demand for renewable energy. Among them, the combined action of water electrolysis and solar energy has emerged. In this study, a hydrangea ZnO/NiFe-layered double hydroxide (LDH) heterojunction was synthesized using the two-step hydrothermal method. The resulting ZnO/NiFe-LDH improved the range and intensity of light response, thus meeting the requirement of electrocatalysis and photocatalysis in theory. Moreover, ZnO/NiFe-LDH demonstrated excellent activity in the electrochemical performance test in the presence of light. When used as a water splitting catalyst in a full cell, the cell voltage was 1.632 V, and Faradic efficiency was 99.1%. Moreover, from the in situ Raman and theoretical calculation results, it is possible to conclude that the synthesized ZnO/NiFe-LDH has the property of absorbing light energy, and the introduction of light energy can optimize the bandgap structure of the material and enhance the adsorption capacity of the system, thus significantly reducing the energy required for water splitting reaction. In sum, this study introduced a composition strategy for LDH heterojunction materials and presented a theoretical and experimental investigation of the light influence on the material structure and electrochemical reaction. Furthermore, it is believed that an important future direction of hydrogen production is photo-assisted water splitting.

Abstract:Solar-driven photoelectrochemical (PEC) technology has been widely recognized as a green and sustainable approach to produce fossil-fuel-alternative energy sources, whereas currently its feasibility is still a great challenge due to the lack of high-performance photoanodes. Herein, two-dimensional trimetallic CoNiFe-layered double hydroxides (CoNiFe-LDHs) nanosheets were uniformly anchored on one-dimensional Ta3N5 nanotube arrays used as a novel integrated photoanode. Serving as a hole collector, CoNiFe-LDHs can accelerate hole extraction from photo-excited Ta3N5 towards surface water oxidation reaction (WOR), thus promoting the separation of electron-hole pairs and ultimately markedly improving PEC water-splitting performance. Moreover, the trimetallic CoNiFe-LDHs were more effective in boosting the PEC performance than the three sets of bimetallic LDHs. By further replacing WOR with glycerol oxidation reaction (GOR), the composite photoanode achieved a ten-fold enhancement of solar energy conversion efficiency reaching 0.56% with nearly 100% Faradaic efficiency for concurrent generation of formate and hydrogen. Importantly, the stability of Ta3N5 was dramatically enhanced due to the synergy of CoNiFe-LDHs loading and anodic GOR. The significantly enhanced PEC properties can be mainly attributed to the increased surface active sites, promoted hole extraction and utilization, and particularly the improved charge separation efficiency. This work provides a reference for the fabrication of high-performance Ta3N5-based photoanodes towards stable and efficient PEC hydrogen generation and the green conversion of biomass derivatives into valuable chemicals.

Abstract:Background CdSe has emerged as a promising candidate for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHE). To improve its photocatalytic activity, a novel CoAl-LDH/CdSe (CLCSe) heterojunction photocatalyst was designed. Methods The CoAl-LDH/CdSe heterojunction photocatalyst was successfully prepared by a facile hydrothermal method. X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) proved that CoAl-LDH was combined with CdSe through Cd-O bonds. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) collectively uncovered that CoAl-LDH was like sheet structures and CdSe presented irregular cluster particles. Photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy and electrochemical experiments confirmed that CoAl-LDH/CdSe heterojunction effectively elevated the separation efficiency of charge carriers. Significant Findings The electron transfer path of CoAl-LDH/CdSe composites followed the S scheme mechanism. Moreover, the introduction of CoAl-LDH reduced the surface overpotential of CoAl-LDH/CdSe composites. The H 2 generation rate of the optimal sample achieved 602 μmol g −1 h −1 , which was about 12 times that of pure CdSe. Its superior photocatalytic performance could be attributed to the promoted charge separation and decreased overpotential. This work furnishes an innovative assumption for modification of CdSe-based photocatalyst to obtain excellent hydrogen evolution activity. Abstract:This article describes a photocatalytic (PC) hydrogen evolution technology that utilizes Pd/LaCoO3/PCN nanocomposites. In the preparation process, a narrow band gap pure LaCoO3 phase was obtained using a template method, which was subsequently combined with Pd-NPs loaded with pCN to form a Z-scheme heterojunction. The formation of this heterojunction resulted in a material with improved charge transfer characteristics and electron well performance. Under visible light irradiation, the composite material demonstrated a higher PC hydrogen evolution activity, resulting in a H2 yield of 40.2 μmol g–1 h–1. This yield represents a 259 times improvement over pure pCN materials, respectively. Furthermore, in the presence of a sacrificial agent, triethanolamine (TEOA), the production of H2 increased compared to methanol, likely due to the more vital binding ability of the amine-containing pCN to TEOA. Finally, the study found that Pd/LaCoO3/PCN nanocomposites displayed excellent stability and reusability during three continuous cycles. These results suggest that this material may become an efficient and sustainable technology for solar fuel production.

Abstract:Heterojunction engineering represents a robust strategy for accelerating carrier transfer, thereby enhancing the activity of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. In this work, a series of innovative CoNiP@W/Z-CdS heterojunctions were prepared for the purpose of investigating the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity under visible light-driven. To achieve high efficiency, lamellar CoNiP was first synthesized through the phosphatisation of CoNi LDH precursor. Subsequently, the W/Z-CdS homojunction was in-situ grown on the CoNiP via the hydrothermal method, resulting in the formation of the CoNiP@W/Z-CdS homojunction/heterojunction. The hydrogen evolution rate of 3% CoNiP@W/Z-CdS composite reaches 60.6 mmol/g/h, which is 3.6 times, 7.0 times and 11.9 times higher than that of W/Z-CdS, W-CdS and Z-CdS, respectively. The enhanced photocatalytic performance of 3% CoNiP@W/Z-CdS can be attributed to the introduction of an ultra-thin CoNiP bimetallic phosphide as cocatalyst, which increases the specific surface area to provide a large number of active sites for the catalytic reaction, and broadens the absorption range of sunlight. In particular, the synergistic effect between homojunction and Schottky junction in 3% CoNiP@W/Z-CdS further accelerates separation and migration rate of double interfacial carriers, improving photocatalytic H 2 rate. This work offers a new perspective for the rational design of three-phase binary photocatalysts with high activity and stability.

Abstract:Combining organic compounds with inorganic layers leads to the development of innovative organic-inorganic hybrid materials with specific functional properties, opening up possibilities for advanced applications that go beyond current technological limits. In the present study, Ti-MOF (MIL-177-LT) was decorated with NiFe layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) to fabricate a heteroatom electrocatalyst (MIL-177-LT@NiFe-LDH). The synthesized electrode included capable electron transportation, long-term stability, and high specific surface area. Photoelectrocatalytic degradation of the Azo dye (Acid Red 18) from water was studied with respect to the influence of pH, bias potential, temperature, and dye concentration. It was found that hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) has minimized overpotentials, i.e., 130 and 182 mV corresponding to the current densities of 400 and 1000 mA cm −2 , respectively. High stability was also observed when a current density of 5000 mA cm −2 was applied to the modified electrode for 500 h. The layered architecture of the MIL-177-LT@NiFe-LDH composite provides high surface points for the degradation of dye molecules and water splitting for HER. The electrocatalyst showed great stability in the degradation process. The experiment was powered by solar cells, reducing the need for electricity and resulting in cost savings. Additionally, the treatment process was analyzed in terms of costs. Therefore, a promising approach is suggested in this study for developing high-performance organic-inorganic hybrid materials with exceptional electrochemical and photocatalytic properties.

Rational Design of Porous Conjugated Polymers and Roles of Residual Palladium for Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production

Abstract:Developing highly efficient photocatalyts for water splitting is one of the grand challenges in solar energy conversion. Here, we report the rational design and synthesis of porous conjugated polymer (PCP) that photocatalytically generates hydrogen from water splitting. The design mimics natural photosynthetics systems with conjugated polymer component to harvest photons and the transition metal part to facilitate catalytic activities. A series of PCPs have been synthesized with different light harvesting chromophores and transition metal binding bipyridyl (bpy) sites. The photocatalytic activity of these bpy-containing PCPs can be greatly enhanced due to the improved light absorption, better wettability, local ordering structure, and the improved charge separation process. The PCP made of strong and fully conjugated donor chromophore DBD (M4) shows the highest hydrogen production rate at ∼33 μmol/h. The results indicate that copolymerization between a strong electron donor and weak electron acceptor into the same polymer chain is a useful strategy for developing efficient photocatalysts. This study also reveals that the residual palladium in the PCP networks plays a key role for the catalytic performance. The hydrogen generation activity of PCP photocatalyst can be further enhanced to 164 μmol/h with an apparent quantum yield of 1.8% at 350 nm by loading 2 wt % of extra platinum cocatalyst.

To reduce the rate of photogenerated carriers' recombination and chemically corrosion of CdS photoanode, a composite component surface state passivation layer was introduced. The polydopamine (PDA) and Nafion co‐modified CdS nanorods were successfully prepared by simple electropolymerization and dipping methods. The inherent adhesion of PDA can make it adhere well to CdS nanorods to improve the surface defects of CdS, and it can also promote the assembly of Nafion coating. The mechanism of PDA/Nafion bi‐layer passivation on CdS was analyzed by steady‐state/time‐resolved photoluminescence spectra and electron paramagnetic resonance. The optimized CdS/PDA/Nafion photoanode exhibits highly improved PEC water splitting activity and stability under visible light. It is highly anticipated that this multifunctional polymer passivation layer will provide new routes to practically engineer photoanodes in PEC hydrogen production devices. Abstract:The design and construction of low-cost and high-performance hybrid materials for the photocatalytic hydrogen production reaction (HER) are extremely important for the large-scale application of hydrogen energy. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are considered to be potential photocatalytic materials. Herein, monodisperse, small size, non-precious metal transition metal phosphide Ni2P is encapsulated into a typical MOF (UiO-66-NH2) as a hybrid core-shell cocatalyst to modify Zn0.5Cd0.5S for photocatalytic hydrogen production. Ni2P is wrapped in UiO-66-NH2 via an in situ solvothermal method, and Zn0.5Cd0.5S sulfide is decorated with a core-shell Ni2P@UiO-66-NH2 cocatalyst to obtain ternary Ni2P@UiO-66-NH2/Zn0.5Cd0.5S composite materials. Photoelectric and chemical characterization confirms that the ternary composites have good kinetic hydrogen production performance. The hydrogen production rate of 10% 10 mg Ni2P@UiO-66-NH2/Zn0.5Cd0.5S reaches 40.91 mmol·g–1·h–1 with an apparent quantum efficiency at 420 nm of 13.57%. The addition of 10 mg Ni2P@UiO-66-NH2 increases the surface area of the ternary material, providing abundant reaction sites and forming an efficient charge transfer channel, which is conducive to efficient hydrogen production by the ternary photocatalysts. It is shown that the formation of a ternary composite system is beneficial to the occurrence of an efficient catalytic reaction. This study provides a new perspective for the construction of high-performance photocatalytic materials.

Abstract:The study of environmentally friendly semiconductor photocatalysts has important practical significance for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. In this experiment, type II heterojunction NiCo-LDH/CeO 2 was prepared by in situ loading, and the NiCo-LDH/CeO 2 catalyst showed good activity under simulated sunlight irradiation. Under simulated visible light irradiation, its hydrogen production rate reached 2.7 mmol h −1 g −1 , which was higher than that of NiCo-LDH (0.86 mmol h −1 g −1 ). Through a series of characterization data, it can be concluded that the heterojunction successfully constructed by the close contact between NiCo-LDH and CeO 2 accelerates the separation of photogenerated electrons and holes and can effectively inhibit the recombination of the two so that more electrons are involved in the hydrogen evolution reaction. The material has good interfacial charge transfer performance, which improves the photocatalytic performance. This work can provide an effective method for the research and development of NiCo-LDH.

General In Situ Photoactivation Route with IPCE over 80% toward CdS Photoanodes for Photoelectrochemical Applications

Abstract:Cost-effective photoanodes with remarkable electronic properties are highly demanded for practical photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. The ability to manipulate the surface carrier separation and recombination is pivotal for achieving high PEC performance for water splitting. Here, a facile and economical approach is reported for substantially improving the surface charge separation property of CdS photoanodes through in situ photoactivation, which significantly reduces surface charge recombination through the formation of thiosulfate ion which is favorable to the transfer of photogenerated holes and a uniform nanoporous morphology via the dissolving Cd2+ with phosphate ions on the surface of CdS. The resulting CdS electrodes through scalable particle transfer method exhibit nearly tripled photocurrents, with an incident-photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) at 480 nm exceeding 80% at 0.6 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). And the CdS thin films prepared from chemical bath deposition display quadrupled photocurrents after the stir and PEC activation, with an IPCE of 91.7% at 455 nm and 0.6 V versus RHE. With the suppression of photocorrosion in alkaline borate buffer, the activated photoanodes show great stability for solar hydrogen production at the sacrifice of sulfite. This work brings insights into the design of nanoporous metal sulfide semiconductors for solar water splitting.

Abstract:Inorganic-organic hybrid nanomaterials, with excellent chemical and physical properties and technology applications, have attracted much attention in many fields. In the photocatalytic field, it is still a problem to find a stable, adjustable morphology and band gap and effective photocatalyst in utilizing solar energy conversion to hydrogen (H-2) to solve the energy crisis. Herein, with the assistance of diethylenetriamine (DETA), the novel inorganic-organic CdSe-DETA hybrids with different morphology and adjustable band gap have been synthesised via simple microwave hydrothermal method. The morphological transformation mechanism involves the consumption of organic components controlled by the mixed precursor and subsequent self-assembly of residual inorganic components (CdSe). Under the visible light irradiation lambda > 420 nm), CdSe-18DETA nanobelt, showed the best photocatalytic H-2 production activity (5.75 mmol.g(-1).h(-1)), which is 3.03 times greater than that of pure CdSe (1.90 mmol.g(-1).h(-1)). Moreover, after four cycles, the photocatalytic H-2 production activity can still remain 91.27% of initial value, which indicates its good photocatalytic stability. Our results provide a promising approach for designing visible-light photocatalysts with efficient electron-hole separation and adjustable morphology and band gap. (C) 2019 Elsevier Inc. Abstract:Ternary CdS/PdAg/g-C3N4 hybrid photocatalyst was synthesized by a simple sonochemical method, and the sample exhibited excellent photocatalytic H2 evolution performance up to 3098.3 μmol g-1 h-1. This photocatalytic hydrogen production activity is 968.2 times higher than that of g-C3N4. Meanwhile, the apparent quantum yield (AQY) of the ternary hybrid photocatalyst is 9.6% at 420 nm. The extension of optical response range is verified by ultraviolet–visible diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS). Enhancement of the charge separation efficiency is examined via photoluminescence (PL), surface photovoltage (SPV) and electron spin resonance (ESR). A reasonable catalytic mechanism of the ternary hybrid photocatalyst is proposed. As an electron-bridge, PdAg bimetallic alloy NPs can assist the photoelectrons to transfer from the CB of g-C3N4 to the CB of CdS, from where the photoelectrons react with hydrogen ion to release hydrogen. This work may pave a new way on designing high efficient ternary hybrid photocatalyst.

Abstract:Creation of clean interfaces without contamination of adventitious carbon and robust single active sites are highly desirable for delivery and utilization of electrons in sunlight-driven hydrogen production but still remains challenging in part owing to the lack of understanding in junction nature. Herein, we tackle this challenge by targeted removing of interfacial adventitious carbon between photoharvester CdS and novel single-cobalt co-catalyst (Co-NC). It's found that surface-trapped electrons can readily migrate to the closely attached Co-NC across the cleared interface between CdS and Co-NC. The small-resistance interfacial carrier path and the robust single-cobalt sites work in a cooperative way and hence achieve a superior visible-light driven H2 generation activity with a rate of 4.34 mmol/h, an apparent quantum yield (AQY) of 63.9% at 400 nm and a ultrahigh turnover frequency (TOF) of up to 16714.7 h−1. Our finding will motivate future work in creating clean interfaces and unique single active sites for high performance photocatalysis.

Abstract:The hierarchical binary CdS/NiO hollow heterogeneous architectures (HHAs) with p-n heterojunction are constructed by a facile microwave-assisted wet chemical process for high-efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) from water. The asdesigned CdS/NiO HHAs are composed of hexagonal n-type CdS nanoparticles with a size in the range of 20–40 nm attaching to cubic p-type NiO hollow microspheres (HMSs) which are aggregates of porous nanoplates with a thickness of about 20 nm. The photocatalytic water splitting over CdS/NiO HHAs is significantly increased under simulated solar irradiation, among which the most active sample of CdS/NiO-3 (the mass ratio of CdS to NiO is 1:3) exhibits the fastest photocatalytic HER rate of 1.77 mmol·g−1·h−1, being 16.2 times than that of pure CdS. The boosted photocatalytic HER could be attributed to the synergistic effect on the proportional p-n heterojunction with special hierarchical hollow and porous morphology, an enhancement of visible light absorption, and an improvement of photoinduced charge separation as well as the photo-stability given by the composite heterojunction. This work shows a viable strategy to design the heterojunction with special morphology for the efficient hydrogen generation by water splitting utilizing solar energy.
