Abstract:Diffraction waveguides are widely used in augmented reality devices as information display systems for the introduction of data into the human visual field in order to supplement information about the world around us. This paper formulates the principles of radiation conversion in diffraction waveguides made of photo-thermo-refractive glass on the basis of multiplexed volume holographic gratings, and the advantages and disadvantages of high spectral-angular selectivity are analyzed. In the optical scheme, each of the superimposed volume holographic gratings in the diffraction waveguide forms a corresponding part of the composite angular field of view of the augmented reality device. A proposed mathematical model based on angular multiplexing made it possible to synthesize the diffraction optical element for a new type of diffraction waveguide made from photo-thermo-refractive glass and to create a prototype with an angular resolution of at least 3.0 ± 0.5′, with a brightness change in the image of less than 20% and with a composite angular field of view of 32°.

Abstract:In recent years, Augmented reality (AR) technology has gained great attention. One critical component of AR devices is the see-through optical combiner. Several approaches have been proposed, such as using either refractive, reflective, diffractive, holographic optics, or a combination of them. Meta-surfaces can realize the design of more required optical element due to its superb abilities of controlling the amplitude, phase, polarization or other parameters of wave-front at subwavelength scale. Thus, we proposed a waveguide coupler based on a polarization independent doublet meta-surface, which can realize field of view (FOV) to 50° at the wavelength of 638 nm. Compare to the diffractive grating based optical combiner architecture, our doublet meta-surfaces improve the problem of FOV limited by the refractive index of the waveguide and uneven brightness in AR display devices. The polarization independent doublet meta-surfaces presented in this paper can provide a large phase mutation rate to achieve a large deflection angle. The meta-surfaces consist of a group of Silicon nanofins with different side length, but same height arranged on a rectangle glass substrate lattice with the reflection index of 1.764. Each unit structure has different electromagnetic responses to plane electromagnetic waves with different incident angles. By designing the shape and size of each silicon nanorods and other parameters, the phase and amplitude modulation we need can be achieved. Here we only consider one-dimensional eye-box expansion at a single wavelength. The design approach can be generalized to two-dimensional eye-box expansion. Besides, full-color display can be achieved by coordination of the coupling-in and coupling-out device in waveguides.

Abstract:The optical combiner is an important part of the optical see-through augmented reality display system. Waveguide is an appropriate solution due to its advantages such as light weight and compact structure. Because grating has replicability, it is a promising solution to the waveguide's coupler for mass-production. In this paper, a grating coupler for waveguide is designed by using the rigorous coupled wave analysis (RCWA) to increase the accuracy of the simulation due to the critical dimension is similar to the wavelength. The uniformity of the diffraction efficiency is considered as an important parameter for a better displaying performance. The downhill algorithm is used to optimize the parameters of the grating. In order to obtain a large field of view, the thickness of the grating should be controlled carefully. Finally, two gratings are designed for the waveguide which can extend pupil horizontally. The displaying performance of the waveguide is simulated, and the grating couplers are fabricated by the nanoimprint lithography method. The characteristics of the gratings are tested such as transmittance and diffraction efficiency. The results show the proposed gratings can be utilized for waveguide's coupler. It is believed that our results will give a better alternative for the augmented reality display system.

Abstract:Using new synthesized bifunctional monomers (TPBSAs) with high refractive indices as writing monomers, a series of two‐stage photopolymers with enhanced holographic recording performance is obtained, which can record reflection volume holographic gratings with high diffraction efficiency, refractive index modulation, and transparency within visible region. Furthermore, a holographic optical waveguide capable of achieving virtual and real image fusion is fabricated. A holographic optical waveguide (HOW) is an optimal solution for augmented reality (AR) displays, in which reflection volume holographic gratings are core optical elements. In this study, five high‐refractive‐index (≈1.6) bifunctional acrylate monomers (TPBSAs) are designed and synthesized. A series of two‐stage photopolymers are prepared using TPBSAs as writing monomers. Among them, one containing 9 wt.% TPBSA‐3 shows the best holographic recording performance with a sensitivity as high as 26.59 cm mJ−1. Using it as the recording medium, a reflection VHG can be obtained with high spatial frequency (5634 lines per mm), diffraction efficiency (97.14%), refractive index modulation (0.029), and good transparency within 400−800 nm after photobleaching. Furthermore, a HOW capable of achieving virtual and real image fusion is fabricated.

Abstract:We propose a highly efficient waveguide display based on space-variant volume holographic gratings (SVVHGs). The local period and slant angle of the SVVHG vary along the tangential direction, enabling variant incident angles to satisfy the Bragg condition of the local gratings. As a result, we enlarge the field of view (FOV) without using the conventional multiplexing scheme, while achieving high efficiency and large FOV at the same time. We experimentally record the SVVHGs on Bayfol HX200 films. We demonstrate that the proposed display can achieve 31.9% system efficiency for a broadband light source and 52.3% for a coherent light source, 20° FOV, and high brightness uniformity, making it a promising candidate for widespread applications in the augmented reality (AR) industry.

Abstract:This work proposes a green light-sensitive acrylate-based photopolymer. The effects of the preparation conditions for the waveguide applied volume holographic gratings (VHGs) were experimentally investigated. The optimum preparation conditions for holographic recording were revealed. After optimization, the peak of VHG diffraction efficiency reached 99%, the diffractive wavelength bandwidth increased from 13 nm to 22 nm, and the corresponding RIM was 0.06. To prove the wide application prospect of the acrylate-based photopolymer in head-mounted augmented reality (AR) displays, green monochromatic volume holographic waveguides were fabricated. The display results showed that the prototype was able to achieve a 28° diagonal FOV and possessed a system luminance of 300 cd/m2.

Abstract:Photo-thermo-refractive (PTR) glass) is a photosensitive silicate glass doped with Ce3+ where a permanent refractive index decrement is produced by UV exposure followed by thermal development. This material provides high efficiency and low losses combined with high thermal, ionizing and laser tolerance of holographic optical elements (HOEs). This is why PTR glass is widely used for holographic recording of volume Bragg gratings (trivial holograms produced by interference of two collimated beams) and phase plates operating in near UV, visible, and near IR spectral regions. It would be very beneficial though to record also complex HOEs (lenses and curved mirrors) for those spectral regions. However, PTR is not sensitive to visible or IR radiation and therefore does not allow the recording of nonplanar holograms for these regions. The present paper describes a technique for recording complex HOEs using visible radiation in Ce3+ doped PTR glass. This two-step technique includes a blank exposure to UV radiation followed by structured exposure to a visible beam. It was found that the second exposure decreases the refractive index decrement induced in the UV exposed glass after thermal development. This means that areas, which underwent double exposure, have refractive index lower than in unexposed areas but higher than in just UV exposed ones. Thus, this technique provides refractive index increment after visible irradiation of UV exposed PTR glass. Using this approach, complex holograms (curved mirrors and lenses) operating in the visible region, were recorded in PTR glass.

Abstract:We propose a polarization multiplexing structure based on multilayer reflective polarized volume holographic gratings(PVGs) to improve the field of view and brightness of the augmented reality waveguide display. The multilayer structure forms the splicing of different response bandwidths by stacking PVGs with different periodic components, and realizes the expansion of the wavelength (angle) bandwidth. The polarization multiplexing structure controls the polarization of the diffracted light by controlling the rotation direction of the liquid crystal pitch in the liquid crystal material, so that both left-hand and right-hand circularly polarized light are diffracted to enhance efficiency. Based on these two structures, the wavelength bandwidth of PVG is increased by 40 nm, the angular bandwidth is increased by 10 and the diffraction efficiency is nearly doubled. In order to verify the feasibility of these two structures, we use the holographic waveguide display with OLED as the image source. The demonstrated waveguide prototype shows a complete display with a diagonal field of view of 55. The brightness of virtual image was measured as high as 1100 cdm2 with a transparency of 72 for ambient light.

Abstract:We demonstrate a polarization-dependent binocular waveguide display for augmented reality. Two polarization volume lenses (PVLs) are used to collimate and couple the light emitted from a single display panel into the waveguide, and two polarization volume gratings (PVGs) are used to couple the light out to the human eyes. With the proposed design, different high-quality images can be independently produced in the two eyes.

Abstract:We demonstrate a narrow-bandwidth tunable optical filter in the telecommunication wavelength region near 1550 nm using photorefractive grating. Holographic gratings could be written by plane waves of green light using CW 532nm laser as recording source. The filter could be tuned by changing the grating spacing by means of changing the incident angle of the recording beams of grating. Through theoretically consideration, we get a diffractive efficiency up to 80% and a bandwidth less than 0.1nm. Besides, we propose a holographic recording setup.

Abstract:Holographic waveguide display (HWD) is a promising solution supporting augmented reality, that can be applied in a variety of fields. Despite its advantage of lightweight and compact form factor, designing a HWD with large FOV and high efficiency simultaneously is still challenging. In this work, we revisit this FOV compromise issue and propose a HWD design incorporating space‐variant volume holographic gratings. The resulted prototype display achieves 20° FOV and 31.9% system efficiency.

Abstract:We propose a new type of volume holographic waveguide using multiplex recording for head mounted displays called the volume-holographic multiplexed-mirror (VHM) waveguide. The VHM waveguide is based on a photopolymer with a thickness of several hundred micrometers that has been developed for holographic data storage. We investigated if the VHM can exhibit high performance when combined with broad wavelength light sources. We prototyped a head mounted display unit with the VHM waveguide and evaluated the transmittance, luminance efficiency, and potential field of view. We confirmed clear transparency of 87%, high luminance efficiency of 3850 cd/m2/lm suitable for outside use, and wide potential field of view of 35 degrees (horizontal) and 36 degrees (vertical). The VHM waveguide could pave the way for new high-performance head mounted displays for augmented reality.

Abstract:We present a new method with which to implement shift multiplexing by planar waveguide referencing. In this method, a planar waveguide is used to steer the reference beam, and we implement shift multiplexing by shifting the recording medium. A spatial selectivity as high as 1.1 microm is obtained. By using waveguide referencing we can make a compact and simple holographic system.

Abstract:We present the results of a detailed study of the mechanism and dynamics of holographic Bragg grating formation in azo-dye doped blue-phase liquid crystals. The principal mechanism leading to refractive index modulation is lattice distortion caused by photo-activated trans–cis isomerism of the azo-dye dopant. High diffraction efficiency bulk (Bragg) gratings with grating spacing as small as 1 μm can be written with low optical power and do not require specific optical field polarisation. Furthermore, the written grating can be prolonged by uniform illumination with another laser, instead of being erased. Azo-doped blue-phase liquid crystals thus present themselves as highly promising photosensitive materials for high-resolution holographic recording and image processing application. An experimental demonstration of holographic image reconstruction via optical phase conjugation with excellent aberration correction capability is presented.

Abstract:Summary form only given. The wide spread use of holographic elements is constrained by the lack of available holographic materials. Hariharan's recent book notes that among the photosensitive materials available for high efficiency hologram recording, each have merits, as well as drawbacks. This paper describes properties and performance of inorganic glass as a medium for volume hologram recording, which meets most requirements cited. The use of inorganic photosensitive glasses for phase hologram recording was described several years ago. The two-step process of exposure to UV radiation and thermal development (photo-thermo-refractive process) has been used to record phase patterns in glass defined as photo-thermo-refractive (PTR). Relative diffraction efficiency of up to 90% was recorded at that time, however, strong scattering from the thermal development process resulted in a low absolute diffraction efficiency, not exceeding 45%.

Abstract:According to coupled wave theory, when a volume holographic grating (VHG) is used as dispersion device, the Bragg wavelength selectivity indicates that only in narrow spectrum range can VHG has definite diffraction efficiency. Therefore, volume holographic dispersive device with broad spectral coverage can be realized by means of multiplexing. The key technique is based on wavelength multiplexing holographic recording. Each VHG is corresponding to a narrow spectral range with variant center wavelength. In this paper, the Bragg compensatory multiplexing recording (BCMR) is reported, which can realize multiplexing volume holographic device written with single wavelength and working under multiwavelength without using a tunable laser. This key technique can be realized based on the reciprocally compensatory relationship between the wavelength of incident light and the Bragg angle when Bragg matching. In this paper, a BCMR experimental system is constructed to prove the practicability of this recording method.

Abstract:Abstract. Volume holographic gratings have been used in waveguide displays to implement full-color three-dimensional imaging. Among these, multiplexing gratings are advanced in low energy losses and simple manufacture technologies when used as couplers of color hologram waveguides. A multiplexing holographic grating is designed to realize a uniform red, green, and blue diffraction efficiency and eliminate stray light to the largest extent. Results indicate that the red, green, and blue light incident normal to the grating could be successfully in-coupled into the planar waveguide for total internal reflection with high peak diffraction efficiency, similar energy output, and little stray light. We also analyze the effect of the technical tolerance, including gating thickness, index modulation, grating period, slanted angle, and incident angle. This analysis could help to minimize the optical system and improve the color image quality of waveguide displays.

Abstract:An amphiphilic liquid-crystalline diblock copolymer can be used to record both refractive-index and surface-relief holographic gratings upon irradiation by two coherent laser beams. The diffraction behavior of the gratings is controlled by nanoscale phase separation on annealing. Surface relief is enhanced by almost an order of magnitude due to the pressure gradient produced in the process. The Figure shows a schematic of a grating structure before and after annealing.

Abstract:Abstract Near-eye displays are fundamental technology in the next generation computing platforms for augmented reality and virtual reality. However, there are remaining challenges to deliver immersive and comfortable visual experiences to users, such as compact form factor, solving vergence-accommodation conflict, and achieving a high resolution with a large eyebox. Here we show a compact holographic near-eye display concept that combines the advantages of waveguide displays and holographic displays to overcome the challenges towards true 3D holographic augmented reality glasses. By modeling the coherent light interactions and propagation via the waveguide combiner, we demonstrate controlling the output wavefront using a spatial light modulator located at the input coupler side. The proposed method enables 3D holographic displays via exit-pupil expanding waveguide combiners, providing a large software-steerable eyebox. It also offers additional advantages such as resolution enhancement capability by suppressing phase discontinuities caused by pupil replication process. We build prototypes to verify the concept with experimental results and conclude the paper with discussion.
